Liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) are shape-changing materials that exhibit large deformations in response to applied stimuli. Local control of the orientation of LCEs spatially directs the deformation of these materials to realize spontaneous shape change in response to stimuli. Prior approaches to shape programming in LCEs utilize patterning techniques that involve the detailed inscription of spatially varying nematic fields to produce sheets. These patterned sheets deform into elaborate geometries with complex Gaussian curvatures. Here, we present an alternative approach to realize shape-morphing in LCEs where spatial patterning of the crosslink density locally regulates the material deformation magnitude on either side of a prescribed interface curve. We also present a simple mathematical model describing the behavior of these materials. Further experiments coupled with the mathematical model demonstrate the control of the sign of Gaussian curvature, which is used in combination with heat transfer effects to design LCEs that self-clean as a result of temperature-dependent actuation properties.

The large, directional stimuli-response of aligned liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) could enable functional utility in robotics, medicine, consumer goods, and photonics. The alignment of LCEs has historically been realized via mechanical alignment of a two-stage reaction. Recent reports widely utilize chain extension reactions of liquid crystal monomers (LCM) to form LCEs that are subject to either surface-enforced or mechanical alignment. Here, we prepare LCEs that contain intra-mesogenic supramolecular bonds synthesized via direct free-radical chain transfer photopolymerization processible by a distinctive mechanical alignment mechanism. The LCEs were prepared by the polymerization of a benzoic acid monomer (11OBA), which dimerized to form a liquid crystal monomer, with a diacrylate LCM (C6M). The incorporation of the intra-mesogenic hydrogen bonds increases the achievable nematic order from mechanical programming. Accordingly, LCEs prepared with larger 11OBA concentration exhibit higher magnitude thermomechanical strain values when compared to a LCE containing only covalent bonds. These LCEs can be reprogrammed with heat to return the aligned film to the polydomain state. The LCE can then be subsequently programmed to orient in a different direction. The facile preparation of (re)programmable LCEs with supramolecular bonds opens new avenues for the implementation of these materials as shape deployable elements.

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are stimuli-responsive materials that undergo large shape transformations after undergoing an order-disorder transition. While shape reconfigurations in LCEs are predominantly triggered by heat, there is a considerable interest in developing highly specific triggers that work at room temperature. Herein, we report the fabrication of biocatalytic LCEs that respond to the presence of urea by covalently immobilizing urease within chemically responsive LCE networks. The hydrogen-bonded LCEs developed in this work exhibited contractile strains of up to 36% upon exposure to a base. Notably, the generation of ammonia by immobilized urease triggered a disruption in the supramolecular network and a large reduction of liquid crystalline order in the films when the LCEs were exposed to urea. This reduction in order was macroscopically translated into a strain response that could be modulated by changing the concentration of urea or exposure time to the substrate. Local control of the mechanical response of the LCE was realized by spatially patterning the enzyme on the surface of the films. Subsequent exposure of enzymatically patterned LCE to urea-triggered 3D shape transformations into a curl, arch, or accordion-like structure, depending on the motif patterned on the film surface. Furthermore, we showed that the presence of salt was critical to prevent bridging of the network by the presence of ammonium ions, thereby enabling such macroscopic 3D shape changes. The large actuation potential of LCEs and the ability to translate the biocatalytic activity of enzymes to macroscopic 3D shape transformations could enable use in applications ranging from cell culture, medicine, or antifouling.

Extensive prior research has explored the stabilization of the CLC phase with polymer networks. Snap-through mechanisms are pervasive in everyday life in biological systems, engineered devices, and consumer products. Snap-through transitions can be realized in responsive materials via stimuli-induced mechanical instability. Here, we demonstrate a rapid and powerful snap-through response in liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs). While LCEs have been extensively examined as material actuators, their deformation rate is limited by the second-order character of their phase transition. In this work, we locally pattern the director orientation of LCEs and fabricate mechanical elements with through-thickness (functionally graded) modulus gradients to realize stimuli-induced responses as fast as 6 ms. The rapid acceleration and associated force output of the LCE elements cause the elements to leap to heights over 200 times the material thickness. The experimental examination in functionally graded LCE elements is complemented with computational evaluation of the underlying mechanics. The experimentally validated model is then exercised as a design tool to guide functional implementation, visualized as directional leaping.

Liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) are crosslinked polymer networks that combine the elastic properties of rubber with the anisotropic properties of liquid crystals. Multifunctionality and responsivity can be programmed into LCEs by patterning their local orientation, which is difficult to achieve in other monolithic material systems. Advances in the synthesis and alignment of LCEs have paved the way for their functional integration in robotics, optics, consumer products, energy and healthcare devices. In this Review, we discuss recent advances in materials chemistry and processing that have contributed to the resurgence in LCE research. We examine the mechanical response of LCEs to stimuli and survey approaches for mechanical alignment, surface-enforced alignment, field-induced alignment and rheological alignment. The Review concludes with an over-the-horizon outlook discussing current challenges and emerging research opportunities. Liquid crystalline elastomers are stimuli-responsive polymeric materials whose mechanical properties can be programmed by patterning their local orientation, making them promising candidates to serve as low-density actuators and functional elements in various applications. This Review discusses the synthesis and processing of liquid crystalline elastomers, with a focus on alignment methods and potential applications.

Photomechanical effects realized in azobenzene-functionalized polyimides have shown large deformation and an exceptional increase in photogenerated force output. Here, we synthesize and characterize the photomechanical output of a series of linear polyimide materials prepared with a bulky substituent, incorporated via the development of a new bis(azobenzene-diamine) monomer containing a 9,9-diphenylfluorene cardo structure (azoCBODA). All six azoCBODA-containing polyimides are amorphous and exhibit high glass transition temperatures (Tg) ranging from 298 to 358 °C, storage moduli ranging from 2.27 to 3.81 GPa (at 30 °C), and good thermal stability. The magnitude of the photoinduced mechanical response of the azobenzene-functionalized polyimide is correlated to the rotational freedom of the polyimide chains (resulting in extensive segmental mobility) and fractional free volume (FFV > 0.1).

Materials capable of complex shape changes have broad reaching applications spanning biomimetic devices, componentless actuators, artificial muscles, and haptic displays. Liquid crystal elastomers (LCE) are a class of shape programmable materials which display anisotropic mechanical deformations in response external stimuli. This work details a synthetic strategy to quickly and efficiently prepare LCEs through the usage of chain transfer agents (CTA). The polyacrylate materials described herein exhibit large, reversible shape changes with strains greater 475%, rivalling properties observed in polysiloxane-based networks. The approach reported here is distinguished in that the materials chemistry is readily amenable to surface alignment techniques. The facile nature of the materials chemistry and the compatibility of these materials with directed self-assembly methods could further enable paradigm shifting end uses as designer substrates for flexible electronics or as actuating surfaces.

This investigation has characterised the structure and surface chemistry of CsPbBr3 nanocrystals with controlled diameters between 6.4 to 12.8 nm. The nanocrystals were investigated via a thorough 133Cs solid state NMR and nuclear relaxation study, identifying and mapping radially-increasing nanoscale disorder. This work has formalised 133Cs NMR as a highly sensitive probe of nanocrystal size, which can conveniently analyse nanocrystals in solid forms, as they would be utilised in optoelectronic devices. A combined multinuclear solid state NMR and XPS approach, including 133Cs–1H heteronuclear correlation 2D (HETCOR) NMR, was utilised to study the nanocrystal surface and ligands, demonstrating that the surface is Cs–Br rich with vacancies passivated by didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) ligands. Furthermore, it is shown that a negligible amount of phosphonate ligands remain on the powder nanocrystal surface, despite the key role of octylphosphonic acid (OPA) in controlling the colloidal nanocrystal growth. The CsPbBr3 NCs were shown to be structurally stable under ambient conditions for up to 6 months, albeit with some particle agglomeration.

Photomechanical effects in liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) functionalized with photochromic moieties, such as azobenzene, have been widely studied. This prior work has demonstrated that isothermal, photoinduced (e.g. phototropic) disruption of order via isomerization of azobenzene affects the anisotropic chain configurations of the polymer network. Here, we examine the contribution of the strength of intermolecular interactions between polymer chains in the LCE to both the thermotropic and phototropic response. By incorporating liquid crystalline monomers with reduced aromatic content, both the temperature and irradiation conditions to induce mechanical response are reduced.

Hybrid organic–inorganic lead halide perovskite nanoparticles are promising candidates for optoelectronic applications. This investigation describes the structural and optical properties of MAxCs1−xPbBr3 mixed cation colloidal nanoparticles spanning the complete compositional range of Cs substitution. A monotonic progression in the cubic lattice parameter (a) with changes in the Cs+ content confirmed the formation of mixed cation materials. More importantly, time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) revealed the optimized 13 mol% Cs nanoparticle composition exhibits the longest charge carrier lifetime and enhancement in radiative pathways. This sample also showed the highest photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of ∼88% and displays ∼100% improvement in the PLQY of pure MAPbBr3 and CsPbBr3. Prototype LEDs fabricated from MA0.87Cs0.13PbBr3 were demonstrated.

Metal lead halide perovskite nanocrystals have emerged as promising candidates for optoelectronic applications. However, the inclusion of toxic lead is a major concern for the commercial viability of these materials. Herein, we introduce a new family of non-toxic reduced dimension Rb2CuX3 (X= Br, Cl) colloidal nanocrystals with one-dimensional crystal structure consisting [CuX4]3- ribbons isolated by Rb+ cations. These nanocrystals were synthesised using a room-temperature method under ambient conditions, which makes them cost effective and scalable. Phase purity quantification was confirmed by Rietveld refinement of powder x-ray diffraction and corroborated by 87Rb MAS NMR technique. Both samples also exhibited high thermal stability up to 500°C, which is essential for optoelectronic applications. Rb2CuBr3 and Rb2CuCl3 displays PL emission peaks at 387 nm and 400 nm with high PLQYs of ~100% and ~49%, respectively. Lastly, the first colloidal synthesis of quantum-confined rubidium copper halide-based nanocrystals opens up a new avenue to exploit their optical properties in lighting technology as well as water sterilisation and air purification. Two-dimensional (2D) phenylethyl ammonium (PEA+)-methyl ammonium (MA+) lead iodide ((PEA)2(MA)[Pb2I7]) hybrid perovskite exists as temperature-dependent dimorphs exhibiting an ill-defined phase transition occurring over the 150–200 K range. Raman scattering, photoluminescence, optical absorbance and solid state MAS NMR spectroscopic methods are employed to investigate the structural complexity, disorder and structure/function of this system. The Raman and 1H MAS NMR data indicate that the lower bounds of the phase transition at ∼150 K are characterised by attenuated rotational modes and slower motional dynamics throughout the disordered MA+ organic sublattice, inducing a strengthening of the MA+⋯I hydrogen bonds and a 5 meV increase in the excitonic and photoluminescence energies. It is evident that different recombination mechanisms are dominant for the room temperature and low temperature phases reflecting the importance of MA+ dynamics in the optical properties of the material. Single crystal X-ray studies are unable to position the organic cations within the Pb2I7 framework; however, 1H/13C MAS NMR measurements describe elements of local structural disorder based on conformational isomerism within the PEA+ sublattice. Concomitant I− and Pb2+ migration and [Pb2I7]3− framework defects create stacking disorder, dislocations and dispersed octahedral tilting leading to additional disorder and distributed MA+ and PEA+ cation dynamics.\ud \ud
