Constructed from scratch on land reclaimed from the sea, Songdo was planned to embody new ‘smart city’ life. In reality, it has come to exemplify enclave urbanism that commodifies securitised living for upwardly mobile middle classes. While the political economy of this urban project is by now well studied, the sociological ethnography of the resultant space and its experiential correlates remains less developed and imperfectly contextualised. One needs to connect the dots of power and space. The present paper aims to do that and thematises the ‘design of everyday life’ which rests on (1) the intensification of privatised digital surveillance of mass housing compounds which in turn occasions (2) the remaking of spatial markers and symbolic boundaries between private/public, inclusive/exclusive, inside/outside. As such it is a combination of two different registers of visibility that gets jointly orchestrated by the public–private partnership of Korean state and corporate actors. In order to recognise these regimes as strategic visions of controlled social life we extend James Scott’s notion of ‘seeing like a state’ to include the corresponding regime that we call ‘seeing like a corporation’. This allows us to show that they are mutually elaborative in Songdo through a hybridised fabrication of its lived environment, particularly in the case of one branded housing typology located in the city’s centre called International Business District. PurposeTo explain the process of how star architecture projects generate impact, one must first describe the outputs of such projects and then unpack the wide array of potential effects, which are generated by these outputs. This requires the application of multi-disciplinary research perspectives. Only then can one begin to systematically analyse the long-term impacts. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate how the complexity of such multi-disciplinary research exercise can be managed through the application of a methodological strategy aided by a conceptual impact model.Design/methodology/approachA conceptual impact model is presented, which describes the process of the development of star architecture projects, the various outputs of these projects and the possible effects generated by these outputs. The effects of three case study star architecture projects are discussed.FindingsEmpirical research findings indicate that while the isolation of effects serves the operationalisation of research, the investigation of the impact of star architecture projects on their respective cities must draw on the intertwinement of the fields of urban economy, society and morphology. The paper concludes by arguing for the application of the described methodological strategy as the basis for understanding in which dimensions a star architecture project generates impacts.Practical implicationsThe potential of the proposed impact model for urban analysis when considered as a field of intertwined relations is demonstrated in this article. It helps to reveal how particular local developments change the city significantly in socio-cultural and spatial terms.Originality/valueThe transformative impact of star architecture projects and the role of economic and other effects in this process has hardly been studied, particularly in small and medium-sized cities. This article presents a unique multi-disciplinary research project approached consecutively in the aforementioned fields.

Die Globalisierung ist zur allgegenwärtigen Gewissheit geworden. Doch wie zutreffend ist das Konzept »Globalisierung«, wenn zeitgleich nationale Grenzen gestärkt und transnationale Freihandelszonen ausgeweitet werden, wenn auf unterschiedlichen scales Territorien überwunden und zugleich territoriale Abgrenzungen neu gesetzt werden? Aktuelle Veränderungen als Refiguration von Räumen zu verstehen, ermöglicht die Analyse und Diskussion widersprüchlicher, spannungsreicher und konflikthafter räumlicher Prozesse und ihrer alltäglichen Erfahrung. Die interdisziplinären Beiträge des Bandes präsentieren theoretische und empirische Ergebnisse des Berliner Sonderforschungsbereichs 1265 »Re-Figuration von Räumen«.

Dominik Bartmanski, Seonju Kim, Martina Löw, Timothy Pape und Jörg Stollmann widmen sich in ihrem Beitrag der Planstadt Songdo, die, von Grund auf als Smart City konzipiert, lange als Vorzeigeprojekt und Testfall für umfassende Digitalisierung galt. Heute lockt die engmaschig überwachte und von unzähligen Sensoren gesteuerte Stadt vor allem Koreas Mittelschicht an. Doch ihre Beliebtheit bei Immobilienkäufern hat wenig mit innovativer HighTech zu tun, sondern mehr mit den planerischen Glaubenssätzen der koreanischen Spätmoderne. Songdo ist ein Musterbeispiel dafür, wie hypermoderne Smart Cities soziale Unterschiede entlang der modernen Dreifaltigkeit von Effizienz, Sicherheit und Überwachung reproduzieren. Das digitale Substrat der Stadt erhöht die Vermarktbarkeit und Wertigkeit der urbanen Gebilde ohne neue Werte zu schaffen. Die Enthüllung eines gewöhnlichen Developmentalismus hinter der scheinbar außergewöhnlichen, smarten Idealstadt entmystifiziert diese. Das Zusammenspiel von Technologieunternehmen und Staat führt zu einer weiteren Kommerzialisierung neuen Wohnraums und zu einer ausgeprägten Raumorientierung der koreanischen Mittelschicht. Die umfassende Digitalisierung bleibt eher unterschwellig präsent, deren Funktionalität im Hintergrund. Gleichzeitig produziert Songdo als neuartiges Wohnumfeld Räume, die das Verhältnis zwischen öffentlich und privat, zwischen Inklusion und Exklusion neu ordnen. Die enge Verflechtung unterschiedlicher Kontexte und Texturen erschafft Wohnräume mit einer polykontexturalen Struktur. Im Falle Songdos impliziert dies eher graduelle, nicht substanzielle Veränderungen des Lebensalltags.

Since the opening of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao in 1997, the topic of how ‘star architecture’ plays a decisive role in urban regeneration has been discussed in academic debates as well as in the media. Efforts to emulate the so-called Bilbao effect followed internationally. However, not every city that commissions the design of a public cultural building to a star architect seeks to replicate that effect. This overarching narrative has nevertheless constituted a powerful background representation. This paper discusses the supposed replicability of the ‘effect’. The aim is to emphasize relational situatedness and plurality of roles of star architecture as a device of urban regeneration. The process of repositioning of a city does not necessarily follow the logic of international economic competition.
