This is an article in the field of mineral processing engineering. The study objects are a spodumene waste rock in Sichuan. According to the mineral characteristics of thisspodumene waste rock, heavy medium separation tests were carried out at three different feed particle sizes (-15+0.5 mm, -10+0.5 mm, -5+0.5 mm) of the spodumene waste rock in laboratory. The test results show that the application of heavy medium separation in beneficiation of spodumene waste rock is very effective, and when -10+0.5 mm is used as the feed particle size range of the subsequent waste rock in heavy medium separation, and 2.70 g/cm3 is selected as the separation density, the results of heavy medium separation effect is relatively good. However, according to the actual production of heavy medium separation test results, the separation index is relatively good when the selected particle size is -15+0.5 mm and the medium density is 2.0 g/cm3.

Abstract Background Myopia is a major health issue around the world. Myopia in children has increased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic in China, but reports are scarce on the prevalence of myopia following the pandemic. This study collected vision screening data of school children in China for five consecutive years to observe the changes in myopia after the pandemic and compare the observed prevalence of myopia before and after the pandemic. Methods A school-based vision screening study used stratified samplings to collect the vision screening data in school children aged 6–13 from 45 primary schools in Hangzhou. Vision screening data including uncorrected visual acuity(UCVA) and spherical equivalent refraction(SER). Calculating the mean of SER and the prevalence of myopia and hyperopia from 2019 to 2023. Results A total of 79,068 screening results (158,136 eyes) were included in the analysis. A substantial myopic shift (approximately -0.30 diopters [D] on average) was found in 2020 and 2021 compared with 2019 in all age groups and a substantial myopic shift (approximately 0.4 D on average) was found in 2022 compared with 2021. A slight myopic shift (approximately -0.14 D on average) was found in 2023 compared with 2022. The prevalence of myopia in all age groups was the highest for five years in 2020 or 2021, which was 31.3% for 6-year-olds, 43.0% for 7-year-olds, and 53.7% for 8-year-olds. Abstract Background Benefit finding is the search for positive meaning from traumatic events, such as cancer. It can help caregivers have a positive experience in the caregiving process, relieve negative emotions, and reduce caregiving stress. The aim of this study was to explore benefit finding among caregivers of patients with advanced cancer in their palliative caregiving journey. Methods An exploratory qualitative design of phenomenology was used. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 19 caregivers of palliative care patients with advanced cancer. The Colaizzi 7-step analysis was used to analyse, summarize, and extract themes from the interview data. Results The study identified five themes of caregiver benefit finding in the caregiving process: personal growth, strengthened relationships with patients, adjustment and adaptation, perceived social support, and perceived meaning in life. Most caregivers reported a closer, more dependent relationship with the patient, and only one caregiver did not report any positive changes. Conclusions Caregivers of palliative care patients with advanced cancer can have positive experiences in their care. Healthcare professionals should focus on supporting caregivers and helping them find positive experiences to cope with the challenges of caregiving and improve their quality of life.

Abstract Background Episodic memory loss is a prominent clinical manifestation of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), which is closely related to tau pathology and hippocampal impairment. Due to the heterogeneity of brain neurons, the specific roles of different brain neurons in terms of their sensitivity to tau accumulation and their contribution to AD-like social memory loss remain unclear. Therefore, further investigation is necessary. Methods We investigated the effects of AD-like tau pathology by Tandem mass tag proteomic and phosphoproteomic analysis, social behavioural tests, hippocampal electrophysiology, immunofluorescence staining and in vivo optical fibre recording of GCaMP6f and iGABASnFR. Additionally, we utilized optogenetics and administered ursolic acid (UA) via oral gavage to examine the effects of these agents on social memory in mice. Results The results of proteomic and phosphoproteomic analyses revealed the characteristics of ventral hippocampal CA1 (vCA1) under both physiological conditions and AD-like tau pathology. As tau progressively accumulated, vCA1, especially its excitatory and parvalbumin (PV) neurons, were fully filled with mislocated and phosphorylated tau (p-Tau). This finding was not observed for dorsal hippocampal CA1 (dCA1). The overexpression of human tau (hTau) in excitatory and PV neurons mimicked AD-like tau accumulation, significantly inhibited neuronal excitability and suppressed distinct discrimination-associated firings of these neurons within vCA1. Photoactivating excitatory and PV neurons in vCA1 at specific rhythms and time windows efficiently ameliorated tau-impaired social memory. Notably, 1 month of UA administration efficiently decreased tau accumulation via autophagy in a transcription factor EB (TFEB)-dependent manner and restored the vCA1 microcircuit to ameliorate tau-impaired social memory. Conclusion This study elucidated distinct protein and phosphoprotein networks between dCA1 and vCA1 and highlighted the susceptibility of the vCA1 microcircuit to AD-like tau accumulation. Notably, our novel findings regarding the efficacy of UA in reducing tau load and targeting the vCA1 microcircuit may provide a promising strategy for treating AD in the future.

As a key factor in tumorigenesis, progression, recurrence and metastasis, the biological properties, metabolic adaptations and immune escape mechanisms of CSCs are the focus of current oncological research. CSCs possess self-renewal, multidirectional differentiation and tumorigenicity, and their mechanisms of action can be elucidated by the clonal evolution, hierarchical model and the dynamic CSCs model, of which the dynamic model is widely recognized due to its better explanation of the function and origin of CSCs. The origin hypothesis of CSCs involves cell-cell fusion, horizontal gene transfer, genomic instability and microenvironmental regulation, which together shape the diversity of CSCs. In terms of classification, CSCs include primary CSCs (pri-CSCs), precancerous stem cells (pre-CSCs), migratory CSCs (mig-CSCs), and chemo-radiotherapy-resistant CSCs (cr-CSCs and rr-CSCs), with each type playing a specific role in tumor progression. Surface markers of CSCs, such as CD24, CD34, CD44, CD90, CD133, CD166, EpCAM, and LGR5, offer the possibility of identifying, isolating, and targeting CSCs, but the instability and heterogeneity of their expression increase the difficulty of treatment. CSCs have adapted to their survival needs through metabolic reprogramming, showing the ability to flexibly switch between glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), as well as adjustments to amino acid and lipid metabolism. The Warburg effect typifies their metabolic profiles, and altered glutamine and fatty acid metabolism further contributes to the rapid proliferation and survival of CSCs. CSCs are able to maintain their stemness by regulating the metabolic networks to maintain their stemness characteristics, enhance antioxidant defences, and adapt to therapeutic stress. Immune escape is another strategy for CSCs to maintain their survival, and CSCs can effectively evade immune surveillance through mechanisms such as up-regulating PD-L1 expression and promoting the formation of an immunosuppressive microenvironment. Together, these properties reveal the multidimensional complexity of CSCs, underscoring the importance of a deeper understanding of the biology of CSCs for the development of more effective tumor therapeutic strategies. In the future, therapies targeting CSCs will focus on precise identification of surface markers, intervention of metabolic pathways, and overcoming immune escape, with the aim of improving the relevance and efficacy of cancer treatments, and ultimately improving patient prognosis.

ObjectiveNeutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are important factors in initiating and perpetuating inflammation. However, the role of NETs in different subtypes of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) has been rarely studied. Therefore, we aimed to explore the ability of JIA-derived neutrophils to release NETs and the effect of TNF-α (tumor necrosis factor-alpha) inhibitors on NET formation both in vitro and in vivo, and evaluate the associations of NET-derived products with clinical and immune-related parameters.MethodsThe ability of neutrophils to release NETs and the effect of adalimumab on NET formation was assessed via in vitro stimulation and inhibition studies. Plasma NET-derived products were detected to assess the incidence of NET formation in vivo. Furthermore, flow cytometry and western blotting were used to detect NET-associated signaling components in neutrophils.ResultsCompared to those derived from HCs, neutrophils derived from patients with oligoarticular-JIA, polyarticular-JIA and enthesitis-related arthritis were more prone to generate NETs spontaneously and in response to TNF-α or PMA in vitro. Excessive NET formation existed in peripheral circulation of JIA patients, and elevated plasma levels of NET-derived products (cell-free DNA and MPO-DNA complexes) could accurately distinguish JIA patients from HCs and were positively correlated with disease activity. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that erythrocyte sedimentation rate and TNF-α levels were independent variables and were positively correlated with cell-free DNA concentration. Notably, TNF-α inhibitors could effectively prevent NET formation both in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, the phosphorylation levels of NET-associated kinases in JIA-derived neutrophils were markedly increased.ConclusionOur data suggest that NETs might play pathogenic roles and may be involved in TNF-α-mediated inflammation in JIA. Circulating NET-derived products possess potential diagnostic and disease monitoring value. Furthermore, the preliminary results related to the molecular mechanisms of NET formation in JIA patients provide a theoretical basis for NET-targeted therapy.

Interpersonal neural synchrony (INS) between mothers and children responds to the temporal similarity of brain signals in joint behavior between dyadic partners and is considered an important neural indicator of the formation of adaptive social interaction bonds. Parent-child interactions are particularly important for the development and maintenance of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) in children, but the underlying neurocognitive mechanisms are unknown. Therefore, in the current study we measured INS between mothers and children in interactions by using simultaneous functional Near-infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS), and explored its association with ODD symptoms in children. Seventy-two mother-child dyads were recruited to participate in the study, including 35 children with ODD and 37 healthy children to be used as a control. Each mother-child dyad was measured for neural activity in frontal, parietal, and temporal lobe regions while completing free-play as well as positive, and negative topic discussion tasks. We used Phase-locked value to calculate the synchrony strength and then used the K-means algorithm and k-space based alignment tests to confirm the specific patterns of parent-child synchrony in different brain areas. The results showed that, in free-play (right MFG and bilateral SFG), positive (left TPJ and bilateral SFGdor), and negative (bilateral SFGmed, right ANG, and left MFG) topic discussions, the mother-child pairs showed different patterns of INS. These specific INS patterns were significantly lower in the ODD group compared to the control group and were negatively associated with ODD symptoms in children. Network analyses showed that these INS patterns were connected to different nodes in the ODD symptom network. Our findings suggest that ODD mother-child dyads exhibit lower neural synchrony across a wide range of parent-child interactions. Neural synchrony in the context of interpersonal interactions provides new insights into understanding the neural mechanisms of ODD and can be used as an indicator of neural and socio-environmental factors in the network of psychological disorder symptoms.

Amidst the rapid advancement of Internet of Things (IoT) technology and the burgeoning field of Multimodal Learning Analytics (MMLA), this study employs spatial positioning technology as a case study to investigate the potential of multimodal data in assessing children's social development. This study combines the spatial positioning data of preschool children collected during free play sessions in natural educational settings and the spatial metrics constructed based on observational studies to establish and validate a sociometric status Decision Tree classification model. The findings suggest that the model can overall accurately identify children with three distinct sociometric statuses, albeit with some variability in efficacy across different sociometric groups and age groups. Notably, the model demonstrates a high hitting rate in identifying the potentially neglected children, providing valuable support for educators in understanding and fostering children's developmental needs. This study also highlights the advantages of emerging technology and multimodal data application in child development assessment.

This study aims to analyze the correlation between Systemic Inflammatory Response Index (SIRI) and the severity of coronary artery stenosis in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). It also aims to assess the predictive value of SIRI for the severity of coronary artery stenosis. A total of 2990 patients who underwent coronary angiography were included in this study. The Gensini score was used to estimate the severity of coronary vascular lesions. The predictive ability of SIRI for CHD was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Binary multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to predict the likelihood of CHD based on the SIRI index. The results showed that people with higher SIRI index were more likely to have CHD (P < 0.001). After controlling for other risk factors, the highest quartile had a significantly higher incidence of coronary artery disease compared to the lowest quartile (odds ratio [OR] 2.25, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.73-3.92, P < 0.001). Furthermore, the Gensini score was significantly higher in the fourth quartile group (T4) compared to the first (T1) and second (T2) quartile groups (P < 0.001). Additionally, the SIRI index was significantly higher in the group with severe coronary artery lesions compared to the mild and moderate groups (P < 0.001). The SIRI index also showed a higher predictive ability for the extent of coronary lesions under the ROC curve compared to other commonly used markers, including platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) (P < 0.001). Therefore, SIRI index positively correlates with coronary artery stenosis in CHD patients, serving as an effective early screening marker for assessing stenosis severity.

Abstract Approximately 36% of patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) suffer from severe visual and motor disability (blindness or light perception or unable to walk) with abnormalities of whole-brain functional networks. However, it remains unclear how whole-brain functional networks and their dynamic properties are related to clinical disability in patients with NMOSD. Our study recruited 30 NMOSD patients (37.70 ± 11.99 years) and 45 healthy controls (HC, 41.84 ± 11.23 years). The independent component analysis, sliding-window approach and graph theory analysis were used to explore the static strength, time-varying and topological properties of large-scale functional networks and their associations with disability in NMOSD. Vertical extrinsic photoconductive semiconductor switches (PCSSs) are presented with initial characteristics comparison between V-doped 4H-SiC and Fe-doped GaN PCSS under axial triggering such as dark resistance, photoconductivity, power output, and breakdown behavior. Experiments are carried out under the 532-nm-wavelength laser with mJ-level energy and a pulse width of 30 ns. Photoconductive experiments show that the photoelectric conversion efficiency of GaN PCSS is 2.27 times higher than 4H-SiC PCSS with the same electric field strength under different laser energies from 1 mJ to 5 mJ. 4H-SiC PCSS with a dark-state resistance of $10^{12} \Omega \cdot $ cm can withstand a bias voltage of 8 kV (16 kV/mm) and laser energy of 8 mJ and the maximum output power is up to 428.7 kW, while that of GaN can only stand a bias voltage of 1 kV (2.9 kV/mm) because of low dark resistance and defect. Obvious cracks of 4H-SiC PCSS can be observed from the breakdown image after breakdown occurs, while the dark-state resistance of GaN PCSS drops from $10^{6} \Omega \cdot $ cm to $10^{4} \Omega \cdot $ cm under high DC voltage.

Introduction: The triglyceride glucose (TyG) index is a reliable alternative biomarker of insulin resistance, but the association between the TyG index and acute kidney injury (AKI) in critically ill patients remains unclear. Methods: The data for the study were extracted from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV (MIMIC-IV) database. Cox regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis were performed to analyze the association between the TyG index and all-cause mortality. Besides, Cox regression was carried out in subgroups of age, gender, BMI, diabetes history, and dialysis status. Results: A total of 7,508 critically ill participants with AKI from the MIMIC-IV database were included in this study, with 3,688 (49.12%) participants failed to survive. In Cox regression, after confounder adjustment, patients with a higher TyG index had a higher risk of all-cause mortality (HR = 1.845, 95% CI = 1.49–2.285, p < 0.001). In RCS, after confounder adjustment, the risk of death was positively correlated with the increased value of the TyG index when TyG index surpassed 10.014. This relationship was validated in age, gender, BMI, diabetes subgroups but not in the dialysis subgroup. Interestingly, RCS analysis demonstrated that, in patients undertaking dialysis, there is a “U”-shaped curve for the value of TyG index and risk of all-cause mortality. When TyG index is less than 10.460, the risk of all-cause mortality would decrease with the increased value of TyG index, while when TyG index is higher than 11.180, the risk of all-cause mortality would increase firmly with the increased value of TyG index. Conclusion: Overall, a higher TyG index is associated with a higher risk of all-cause mortality in critically ill AKI. Interestingly, the relationship in the dialysis subgroup follows a “U”-shaped curve, indicating the importance of proper clinical blood glucose and lipid management in this particular population.

AIM: To observe the epithelial remodeling of femtosecond laser-assisted stromal lenticule addition keratoplasty combined with corneal collagen cross-linking(SLAK-CXL)in patients with progressive keratoconus, investigate the remodeling rules of corneal epithelial and influencing factors, and provide clinical data for further refractive correction.METHODS: Retrospective and observational study. A total of 28 keratoconus patients(29 eyes)who received SLAK-CXL from September 2020 to October 2021 were included. Preoperative and postoperative visual acuity, intraocular pressure(IOP), diopter, keratometry and corneal epithelial thickness(CET)were recorded. The trend of CET change was observed. The factors affecting CET were analyzed according to the thickness and depth of the lenticule.RESULTS: Flattest meridian keratometry(Kf)and steepest meridian keratometry(Ks)at 1mo postoperatively were significantly larger than those preoperatively(P0.05).CONCLUSIONS: It is firstly found that the corneal morphology has changed after SLAK-CXL. CET decreases and then increases and then decreases again. At 1a postoperatively, the CET of the central and paracentral areas is thinner, while the CET of the midperipheral and peripheral areas is thicker. The degree of epithelial remodeling is not correlated with lenticule thickness or depth.

The drinking-water treatment sludge (DWTS) possesses intricate characteristics, which restrict its broad applicability. To tackle this issue, we employed DWTS obtained from the Minhang District of Shanghai as the primary constituent, blending it with a low-alkaline curing material to produce pelletized mulch. This investigation primarily focuses on evaluating the environmental safety of sludge pellet mulch (SPM) and scrutinizing alterations in soil physicochemical properties at various mulch thicknesses. The outcomes affirm the durability of SPM and the compliance of eight heavy metals with prescribed standards concerning their concentration, pH, and EC values. After applying SPM, noteworthy enhancements were observed in soil moisture, organic matter content, available nutrients, and the activity of four enzymes. Furthermore, a reduction in soil temperature was observed. For urban landscape mulching, SPM within the range of 9.6–28.8 kg/m2 emerged as the preferred choice, yielding the most favorable overall soil quality improvements.

This study aims to evaluate the clinical diagnostic value of contrast-enhanced ultrasound combined with microflow imaging (CEUS-MFI) in the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant renal tumors. All patients underwent CEUS, MFI, color doppler flow imaging (CDFI), and CEUS-MFI. The efficacies of these different diagnostic modalities in diagnosing benign and malignant renal tumors were evaluated by Kappa consistency test and the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, with pathological findings serving as the gold standard. CDFI, MFI and CEUS-MFI all demonstrated higher blood flow in malignant tumors compared with benign tumors. Compared with benign tumors, CDFI detected a higher rate of punctate and linear Adler grade 2 and 3 blood flows in malignant tumors, as well as peripheral semicircular or annular blood flow. MFI identified a high rate of peripheral circumferential blood flow and irregular vascular morphology in malignant tumors, with most exhibiting Adler grade 3 blood flow. In addition, CEUS-MFI showed more dendritic or irregular Adler grade 2 or 3 blood flows in malignant renal tumors than MFI alone. Further analysis showed that CEUS-MFI had the highest consistency with pathological diagnosis (Kappa = 0.808). The ROC curve showed that the area under the curve (AUC) for CEUS-MFI in differentiating between benign and malignant lesions was 0.898, significantly outperforming other single diagnostic methods. With its capability to display microvascular information and assess overall pathological characteristics, MFI can accurately predict the nature of renal tumors and assist in surgical planning.

IntroductionThis study delves into the spatial preferences of children for play spaces within high-density urban block environments, specifically targeting the area of Baihua Second Road in Shenzhen, China.MethodsRecognizing the critical role of play in children’s development, and the unique challenges posed by dense urban settings, this research employs multiclass logistic regression models and negative binomial regression models to construct a detailed mathematical analysis of neighborhood spatial elements and children’s play space preferences. Data was meticulously gathered through both objective observations of 14 different types of spaces within the block, and subjective assessments via children’s responses to a series of environment photos, capturing the essence of over 3,000 child participants’ interactions and choices.ResultsKey findings reveal a pronounced preference among children for soft facility features and visually appealing spatial experiences, suggesting a nuanced understanding of play space needs beyond traditional playground designs. Notably, the study identifies that while cartoon-style designs in play facilities might increase moderate attractiveness, ordinary designs hold broader appeal, indicating a preference for diversity in play space aesthetics. These insights offer profound implications for urban planners and designers, advocating for a child-centered approach in the creation of urban play environments that prioritize aesthetic diversity, and the integration of natural elements.ConclusionMoreover, the study situates Baihua Second Road as a paradigmatic case, illustrating the methodology and analytical framework applied in addressing the complex interplay between children’s play preferences and urban spatial configurations. By incorporating a comprehensive data-driven analysis, this research contributes significantly to the discourse on child-friendly urban design, offering valuable strategies for cultivating inclusive and engaging urban play spaces for children amidst the constraints of high-density city living.

A patient presenting with several basal cell carcinomas, pigmented nevi, and developmental defects was diagnosed with nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome. Gene panel sequencing and Sanger sequencing were used to identify a novel heterozygous frameshift mutation, c.1312dupA:p.Ser438Lysfs, in exon 9 of PTCH1. I-Tasser and PyMol analyses indicated that the mutated protein patched homolog 1 (PTCH1) lacked 12 transmembrane domains and the intracellular and extracellular rings of ECD2 compared with the wild-type protein, resulting in a remarkably different structure from that of the wild-type protein. This case extends our knowledge of the mutation spectrum of NBCCS.

Abstract Purpose To evaluate the early corneal remodeling and its influencing factors after Small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) for moderate and high myopia. Methods This was a retrospective study. Pre- and post-operative (1 week and 1, 3, 6 months) corneal volume (CV), mean keratometry (Km), and corneal thickness (CT) were measured by Scheimpflug tomography. CT at the central, thinnest point, and on concentric circles of 2, 4, and 6 mm diameter was recorded to assess corneal thickness spatial profile (CTSP) and percentage of thickness increase (PTI) in the moderate and high myopia groups, and to explore possible influencing factors. Results After SMILE, the peripheral CT decreased in the moderate myopia group and central corneal thickness (CCT) increased in the high myopia group at 1 month compared to 1 week (all P 0.05). In order to explore the variation of volatile components of Fenggang zinc-selenium tea during the production process. The combination of headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was applied to detecte volatile components of Fenggang zinc-selenium tea during the production process, and optimize the extracting conditions. Principal component analysis and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis were used to determine, distinguish and screen the volatile components of Fenggang zinc-selenium tea during the production process. The results showed that the best extraction process was as follows: Ratio of raw material to water was 1:6 (g/mL), extraction fiber 50/30 μm CAR/DVB/PDMS, extraction temperature at 90 ℃, extraction time for 70 min. A total of 91 volatile substances were identified by GC-MS that there were 37 kinds of common characteristic volatile components in the Fenggang zinc-selenium tea during the production process. Alcohols, ketones, esters and aldehydes were the main volatile components constituting the aroma of Fenggang zinc-selenium tea, among which alcohols were the most abundant and the highest content. Fenggang zinc-selenium tea could be divided into one category before processing and one category after processing by principal component analysis, and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis showed that 15 volatile components contributed significantly to the odor of Fenggang zinc-selenium tea. Jasmonone, (S)-oxidized linalool, α-ionone, methyl salicylate, methyl heptenone, (E)-oxidized linalool, cedarol, β-cyclic citral, 2-pyrrol 6-trimethyl-6-vinyl tetrahydro-2H-furan-3-ol and methyl acetylsalicylate played an important role in the characteristic aroma quality of Fenggang zinc-selenium tea. This study can provide a theoretical basis for the production, processing, quality control of Fenggang zinc-selenium tea.

The design of chaotic systems with complex dynamic behaviors has always been a key aspect of chaos theory in engineering applications. This study introduces a novel fractional-order system characterized by hidden dynamics, hyperchaotic behavior, and multi-scroll attractors. By employing fractional calculus, the system’s order is extended beyond integer values, providing a richer dynamic behavior. The system’s hidden dynamics are revealed through detailed numerical simulations and theoretical analysis, demonstrating complex attractors and bifurcations. The hyperchaotic nature of the system is verified through Lyapunov exponents and phase portraits, showing multiple positive exponents that indicate a higher degree of unpredictability and complexity. Additionally, the system’s multi-scroll attractors are analyzed, showcasing their potential for secure communication and encryption applications. The fractional-order approach enhances the system’s flexibility and adaptability, making it suitable for a wide range of practical uses, including secure data transmission, image encryption, and complex signal processing. Finally, based on the proposed fractional-order system, we designed a simple and efficient medical image encryption scheme and analyzed its security performance. Experimental results validate the theoretical findings, confirming the system’s robustness and effectiveness in generating complex chaotic behaviors.

Introduction Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that modulates brain states by applying a weak electrical current to the brain cortex. Several studies have shown that anodal stimulation of the ipsilesional primary motor cortex (M1) may promote motor recovery of the affected upper limb in patients with stroke; however, a high-level clinical recommendation cannot be drawn in view of inconsistent findings. A priming brain stimulation protocol has been proposed to induce stable modulatory effects, in which an inhibitory stimulation is applied prior to excitatory stimulation to a brain area. Our recent work showed that priming theta burst magnetic stimulation demonstrated superior effects in improving upper limb motor function and neurophysiological outcomes. However, it remains unknown whether pairing a session of cathodal tDCS with a session of anodal tDCS will also capitalise on its therapeutic effects.Methods and analysis This will be a two-arm double-blind randomised controlled trial involving 134 patients 1–6 months after stroke onset. Eligible participants will be randomly allocated to receive 10 sessions of priming tDCS+robotic training, or 10 sessions of non-priming tDCS+robotic training for 2 weeks. The primary outcome is the Fugl-Meyer Assessment-upper extremity, and the secondary outcomes are the Wolf Motor Function Test and Modified Barthel Index. The motor-evoked potentials, regional oxyhaemoglobin level and resting-state functional connectivity between the bilateral M1 will be acquired and analysed to investigate the effects of priming tDCS on neuroplasticity.Ethics and dissemination The study has been approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Shanghai Yangzhi Rehabilitation Center (reference number: Yangzhi2023-022) and will be conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki of 1964, as revised in 2013.Trial registration number ChiCTR2300074681.

Background. Here, we report a case of a male patient with bilateral focal choroidal excavation (FCE) and central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). A 33-year-old man complained of mild blurring of vision in the right eye. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) revealed FCE in both eyes, with subretinal fluid in both eyes and serous pigment epithelial detachment in the right eye. Standard laser fluence (50 J/cm2) was used in the right eye, and a subthreshold micropulse laser (SML) was simultaneously used in the left eye. Follow-up visits were recommended. At his last visit (5 months after treatment), the visual acuity was 16/20 in the right eye and 20/20 in the left eye and OCT showed a completed resolution of SRF. Conclusion. FCE is defined as a localized depression of the choroid detected by OCT. It may be congenital or acquired secondarily. We present a case of uncommon focal choroidal excavation and central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) coexisting in both eyes at a relatively young age in which visual acuity was improved and subretinal fluid (SRF) completely resolved with laser treatment. Timely treatment can promote SRF absorption and improve vision.

The depth of light penetration and tumor hypoxia restrict the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), while the overproduction of lactate (LA) facilitates the development, aggressiveness, and therapy resistance of TNBC. To address these issues, a self-acting PDT nanosystem (HL@hMnO2-LOx@HA) is fabricated by loading 2-(1-hexyloxyethyl)-2-devinyl pyropheophorbide-alpha (HPPH), luminol, and LA oxidase (LOx) in a hyaluronic acid (HA)-coated hollow manganese dioxide (hMnO2) nanoparticle. LOx catalyzes the oxidation of LA into pyruvate and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), thus depleting the overproduced intratumoral LA. In the acidic tumor microenvironment, H2O2 reacts with luminol and hMnO2 to yield blue luminescence as well as O2 and Mn2+, respectively. Mn2+ could further enhance this chemiluminescence. HPPH is then excited by the chemiluminescence through chemiluminescence resonance energy transfer for self-illuminated PDT. The generated O2 alleviates the hypoxia state of the TNBC tumor to produce sufficient 1O2 for self-oxygenation PDT. The Mn2+ performs T1 magnetic resonance imaging to trace the self-acting PDT process. This work provides a biocompatible strategy to conquer the limits of light penetration and tumor hypoxia on PDT against TNBC as well as LA overproduction.

The Tibetan people are ancient and populous, constituting the seventh-largest of the fifty-five ethnic minority groups in China. The Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture (NTQAP), situated on the border of northwest and southwest China, has its distinct group relationships. Short tandem repeat (STR) is extremely polymorphic and extensively used in the application of forensic medicine and population genetics. However, it is not clear the genetic information including linkage disequilibrium (LD) by 36 autosomal STR (A-STR) markers in the Tibetan group from NTQAP. The Tibetan population from NTQAP of southwest China was examined for 36 A-STR loci in the research. Every marker across the 36 A-STR loci was consistent with Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium (HWE). The results of the calculation revealed that the total discrimination power (TDP) is 1–2.2552 × 10−42 and the cumulative probability of exclusion (CPE) is 1–1.3031 × 10−16. Subsequently, a total of 345 alleles with allelic frequencies ranging from 0.00382 to 0.55343 were identified, and the allelic numbers varied from 5 in both the TH01 and TPOX markers to 28 in the SE33 locus. The Ngawa Tibetan population, along with other Chinese populations, exhibited influences from historical factors and regional distribution, as indicated by the results of population genetics analysis. We thus first explored the genetic characteristics and correlated forensic parameters of the 36 A-STR markers in NTQAP to fill the gap in the Tibetan population. It was discovered that these 36 autosomal STR markers supplemented forensic STR databases and offered extremely valuable polymorphisms for Chinese forensic applications, such as parentage testing and personal identification. Moreover, the study would contribute additional information regarding the substructure and diversity in the Chinese population.

BackgroundDespite the putatively targetable genomic landscape of high-grade gliomas, the long-term survival benefit of genomically-tailored targeted therapies remains discouraging.MethodsUsing glioblastoma (GBM) as a representative example of high-grade gliomas, we evaluated the clonal architecture and distribution of hotspot mutations in 388 GBMs from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Mutations were matched with 54 targeted therapies, followed by a comprehensive evaluation of drug biochemical properties in reference to the drug’s clinical efficacy in high-grade gliomas. We then assessed clinical outcomes of a cohort of patients with high-grade gliomas with targetable mutations reviewed at the Johns Hopkins Molecular Tumor Board (JH MTB; n = 50).ResultsAmong 1,156 sequence alterations evaluated, 28.6% represented hotspots. While the frequency of hotspot mutations in GBM was comparable to cancer types with actionable hotspot alterations, GBMs harbored a higher fraction of subclonal mutations that affected hotspots (7.0%), compared to breast cancer (4.9%), lung cancer (4.4%), and melanoma (1.4%). In investigating the biochemical features of targeted therapies paired with recurring alterations, we identified a trend toward higher lipid solubility and lower IC50 in GBM cell lines among drugs with clinical efficacy. The drugs’ half-life, molecular weight, surface area and binding to efflux transporters were not associated with clinical efficacy. Among the JH MTB cohort of patients with IDH1 wild-type high-grade gliomas who received targeted therapies, trametinib monotherapy or in combination with dabrafenib conferred radiographic partial response in 75% of patients harboring BRAF or NF1 actionable mutations. Cabozantinib conferred radiographic partial response in two patients harboring a MET and a PDGFRA/KDR amplification. Patients with IDH1 wild-type gliomas that harbored actionable alterations who received genotype-matched targeted therapy had longer progression-free (PFS) and overall survival (OS; 7.37 and 14.72 respectively) than patients whose actionable alterations were not targeted (2.83 and 4.2 months respectively).ConclusionWhile multiple host, tumor and drug-related features may limit the delivery and efficacy of targeted therapies for patients with high-grade gliomas, genotype-matched targeted therapies confer favorable clinical outcomes. Further studies are needed to generate more data on the impact of biochemical features of targeted therapies on their clinical efficacy for high-grade gliomas.

AbstractBackground Immunosuppressive therapies (ISTs) are mainstays for management of myasthenia gravis (MG). Meanwhile, latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is common in the setting of high-burden countries. However, the prevalence of LTBI among MG patients and whether receiving ISTs for MG would aggravate LTBI reactivation remain unknown.Methods We retrospectively analyzed the frequency of LTBI via interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA) positivity among hospitalized MG patients from both rural and urban areas in a tertiary hospital, and those receiving ISTs were followed up to investigate the reactivation risk of LTBI.Results A total of 300 MG patients with determinate IGRA results were enrolled, where the frequency of LTBI was 35.0%. Male (OR = 1.910, 95% CI: 1.181–3.089, p = .008) and elderly (OR = 1.044, 95% CI: 1.027–1.061, p .999). Only 1 patient eventually reported lymph node and intestinal TB, with the incidence rate of LTBI reactivation preliminarily estimated to be 0.81 per 100 person years.Conclusion The frequency of LTBI is high in our MG cohort, especially among those with advanced age and males. However, receiving immunosuppressives seems not to increase the risk of LTBI reactivation. LTBI screening is strongly recommended for all MG patients ready to receive ISTs, while preventive anti-TB chemotherapy should be prescribed after weighing potential benefits against the risk of side effects in those with LTBI. In-depth investigation is still entailed to further verify these findings due to the limitation of the retrospective single-center design of our study.

Abstract Background Extra-adrenal myelolipoma is an unusual entity, and endobronchial myelolipoma is rarer, which is often ignored by clinicians, delaying the disease and affecting the prognosis. Case presentation A 71-year-old man with a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus, with recurrent fever, cough, and expectoration for more than 2 weeks experienced relief in cough, phlegm reduction, and glycemic control with anti-inflammatory treatment. Further examination revealed that new growths obstructing all lobar bronchi impaired flexible bronchoscope entry. In order to relieve the patient’s symptoms, under general anesthesia, we performed liquid nitrogen cryobiopsy at multiple bronchial openings, and then used argon plasma coagulation (APC) to achieve hemostasis. The pathological diagnosis was bronchial myelolipoma. The largest volume of the resected tissue was a mass measuring 0.6 cm × 0.4 cm × 0.3 cm at the bronchial opening of the upper lobe of the left lung. The patient’s condition was stable and the symptoms were partially relieved after surgery. No recurrence was observed during the 12-month follow-up, although the long-term treatment efficacy is unknown. Conclusion Pathological biopsy is key to the diagnosis of endobronchial myelolipoma, and the development of the endobronchial myelolipomas may have been associated with long-term poor control of steroid levels in this patient.

Abstract Organic small-molecule contrast agents have attracted considerable attention in the field of multispectral optoacoustic imaging, but their weak optoacoustic performance resulted from relatively low extinction coefficient and poor water solubility restrains their widespread applications. Herein, we address these limitations by constructing supramolecular assemblies based on cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]). Two dixanthene-based chromophores (DXP and DXBTZ) are synthesized as the model guest compounds, and then included in CB[8] to prepare host-guest complexes. The obtained DXP-CB[8] and DXBTZ-CB[8] display red-shifted and increased absorption as well as decreased fluorescence, thereby leading to a substantial enhancement in optoacoustic performance. Biological application potential of DXBTZ-CB[8] is investigated after co-assembly with chondroitin sulfate A (CSA). Benefiting from the excellent optoacoustic property of DXBTZ-CB[8] and the CD44-targeting feature of CSA, the formulated DXBTZ-CB[8]/CSA can effectively detect and diagnose subcutaneous tumors, orthotopic bladder tumors, lymphatic metastasis of tumors and ischemia/reperfusion-induced acute kidney injury in mouse models with multispectral optoacoustic imaging.

The research used polyethersulfone (PES) as a membrane material, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) k30 and polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG 400) as water-soluble additives, and dimethylacetamide (DMAc) as a solvent to prepare hollow-fiber ultrafiltration membranes through a nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) process. The hydrophilic nature of PVP-k30 and PEG caused them to accumulate on the membrane surface during phase separation. The morphology, chemical composition, surface charge, and pore size of the PES membranes were evaluated by SEM, FTIR, zeta potential, and dextran filtration experiments. The paper also investigated how different spinning solution compositions affected membrane morphology and performance. The separation efficiency of membranes with four different morphologies was tested in single-protein and double-protein mixed solutions. The protein separation effectiveness of the membrane was studied through molecular weight cutoff, zeta potential, and static protein adsorption tests. In addition, the operating pressure and pH value were adjusted to improve ultrafiltration process conditions. The PES membrane with an intact sponge-like structure showed the highest separation factor of 11, making it a prime candidate membrane for the separation of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and lysozyme (LYS). The membrane had a minimal static protein adsorption capacity of 48 mg/cm2 and had excellent anti-fouling properties. When pH = 4, the BSA retention rate was 93% and the LYS retention rate was 23%. Furthermore, it exhibited excellent stability over a pH range of 1–13, confirming its suitability for protein separation applications.

Abstract Background Treatment options for pretreated triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) are limited. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of apatinib, an antiangiogenic agent, in combination of etoposide for pretreated patients with advanced TNBC. Methods In this single-arm phase II trial, patients with advanced TNBC who failed to at least one line of chemotherapy were enrolled. Eligible patients received oral apatinib 500 mg on day 1 to 21, plus oral etoposide 50 mg on day 1 to 14 of a 3-week cycle until disease progression or intolerable toxicities. Etoposide was administered up to six cycles. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS). Results From September 2018 to September 2021, 40 patients with advanced TNBC were enrolled. All patients received previous chemotherapy in the advanced setting, with the median previous lines of 2 (1–5). At the cut-off date on January 10, 2022, the median follow-up was 26.8 (1.6–52.0) months. The median PFS was 6.0 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.8–8.2) months, and the median overall survival was 24.5 (95%CI: 10.2–38.8) months. The objective response rate and disease control rate was 10.0% and 62.5%, respectively. The most common adverse events (AEs) were hypertension (65.0%), nausea (47.5%) and vomiting (42.5%). Four patients developed grade 3 AE, including two with hypertension and two with proteinuria. Conclusions Apatinib combined with oral etoposide was feasible in pretreated advanced TNBC, and was easy to administer. Abstract Background To analyze the relationship between axial length and levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol in children. Methods A retrospective, hospital-based cross-sectional research with 69 right eyes from 69 children who underwent health examination by Zhejiang Provincial People’s Hospital was carried out. The participants were split into three groups: Group A (axial length 24 mm). Demographic epidemiological information, blood biochemical parameters and ophthalmic characteristics including refractive status and ocular geometric parameters were obtained and analyzed. Results 69 right eyes from 69 patients (25 males and 44 females) with a median age of 10.00 years old (IQR: 8.00–11.00 years) were included in the study. Within Group A, there were a total of 17 individuals; Group B consisted of 22 individuals; Group C included 30 individuals. Arsenic (As) and copper (Cu) are two common contaminants in the environment. When organisms are exposed to As or/ and Cu in large quantities or for sustained periods, oxidative stress is induced, adversely affecting kidney function. However, the molecular mechanisms involved in As or/ and Cu-induced nephrotoxicity remain elusive. In this experiment, wild-type C57BL/6 and Nrf2-knockout mice (n = 24 each) were exposed to arsenic trioxide and copper chloride alone or in combination. Our research findings indicate that exposure to As or/ and Cu can activate the Nrf2 antioxidant pathway by upregulating the levels of Nrf2, HO-1, CAT, and downregulating the level of Keap1, thereby reducing As or/ and Cu-induced oxidative stress. Meanwhile, exposure induced kidney cell pyroptosis and apoptosis by promoting the expression of NLRP3 inflammasomes and Caspase-3, which peaked in mice co-treated with As and Cu. Subsequently, we investigated its role in As or/ and Cu-induced kidney injury by knocking out Nrf2. Our results show that after knocking out Nrf2, the expression of antioxidant factors CAT and HO-1 significantly decreased. Based on the low antioxidant capacity after Nrf2 knockout, the levels of NLRP3 inflammasome, GSDMD, and Caspase1 were significantly upregulated after exposure to As and Cu, indicating more severe cellular pyroptosis. In addition, the level of Caspase3-mediated apoptosis was also more severe. Taken together, there is crosstalk between Nrf2-mediated antioxidant capacity and apoptosis/ pyroptosis induced by exposure to As or/ and Cu. Depletion of Nrf2 alters its antioxidant capacity, ultimately leading to more severe apoptosis, pyroptosis, and nephrotoxicity.

ObjectiveTo investigate the effects of cortical thickness on the identification accuracy of fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS).MethodsResting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data were collected from 31 remitting MS, 20 acute MS, and 42 healthy controls (HCs). After preprocessing, we first calculated two-dimensional fALFF (2d-fALFF) maps using the DPABISurf toolkit, and 2d-fALFF per unit thickness was obtained by dividing 2d-fALFF by cortical thickness. Then, between-group comparison, clinical correlation, and classification analyses were performed in 2d-fALFF and 2d-fALFF per unit thickness maps. Finally, we also examined whether the effect of cortical thickness on 2d-fALFF maps was affected by the subfrequency band.ResultsIn contrast with 2d-fALFF, more changed regions in 2d-fALFF per unit thickness maps were detected in MS patients, such as increased region of the right inferior frontal cortex and faded regions of the right paracentral lobule, middle cingulate cortex, and right medial temporal cortex. There was a significant positive correlation between the disease duration and the 2d-fALFF values in the left early visual cortex in remitting MS patients (r = 0.517, Bonferroni-corrected, p = 0.008 × 4 0.05). For detecting MS patients, 2d-fALFF and 2d- fALFF per unit thickness both performed remarkably well in support vector machine (SVM) analysis, especially in the remitting phase (AUC = 86, 83%). Compared with 2d-fALFF, the SVM model of 2d-fALFF per unit thickness had significantly higher classification performance in distinguishing between remitting and acute MS. More changed regions and more clinically relevant 2d-fALFF per unit thickness maps in the subfrequency band were also detected in MS patients.ConclusionBy dividing the functional value by the cortical thickness, the identification accuracy of fALFF in MS patients was detected to be potentially influenced by cortical thickness. Additionally, 2d-fALFF per unit thickness is a potential diagnostic marker that can be utilized to distinguish between acute and remitting MS patients. Notably, we observed similar variations in the subfrequency band.

BackgroundSenescence have emerged as potential factors of lung cancer risk based on findings from many studies. However, the underlying pathogenesis of lung cancer caused by senescence is not clear. In this study, we try to explain the potential pathogenesis between senescence and lung cancer through proteomics and metabonomics. And try to find new potential therapeutic targets in lung cancer patients through network mendelian randomization (MR).MethodsThe genome-wide association data of this study was mainly obtained from a meta-analysis and the Transdisciplinary Research in Cancer of the Lung Consortium (TRICL), respectively.And in this study, we mainly used genetic complementarity methods to explore the susceptibility of aging to lung cancer. Additionally, a mediation analysis was performed to explore the potential mediating role of proteomics and metabonomics, using a network MR design.ResultsGNOVA analysis revealed a shared genetic structure between HannumAge and lung cancer with a significant genetic correlation estimated at 0.141 and 0.135, respectively. MR analysis showed a relationship between HannumAge and lung cancer, regardless of smoking status. Furthermore, genetically predicted HannumAge was consistently associated with the proteins C-type lectin domain family 4 member D (CLEC4D) and Retinoic acid receptor responder protein 1 (RARR-1), indicating their potential role as mediators in the causal pathway.ConclusionHannumAge acceleration may increase the risk of lung cancer, some of which may be mediated by CLEC4D and RARR-1, suggestion that CLEC4D and RARR-1 may serve as potential drug targets for the treatment of lung cancer.

Most greenhouse gases come from biological activities and industry which will lead to global warming and show an impact on human life. With the need of green transformation of the global economic structure and seeking for higher quality of human life, the detection and management of greenhouse gases, as well as most hazardous gases in the environment, are increasingly demanding. Applications in different fields require sensors that can detect gas volume fractions with magnitudes from 10–9 to 10–4. Greenhouse gas detection plays an important role both in the agriculture and industry field. In this review, we first summarize the mechanism of several common gas detectors used currently. Then, the advantages of nanostructured gas sensors are discussed. Finally, the applications of infrared gas sensors based on nanophotonic devices are described in detail. This review has been an outlook on the future development of infrared gas sensors based on nanophotonic devices.

Objective: To determine the content of 16 phenolic compounds in 24 batches of Prunella vulgaris by liquid chromatography- tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and to investigate the correlation between phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity by grey relational analysis (GRA) and partial least squares regression (PLSR) analysis. Methods: The sample was extracted with 80% methanol by the ultrasonic extraction. A method for the determination of 16 phenolic compounds in Prunella vulgaris was established by LC-MS/MS. The Waters ACQUITY UPLC BEH C18 column (2.1 mm×100 mm, 1.7 μm) was selected as the stationary phase. The gradient elution was performed with the mobile phase of 0.1% formic acid-acetonitrile at the flow rate of 0.4 mL/min. The eluted compounds were detected in the negative ion mode with multiple reaction monitoring technology. The antioxidant activities were evaluated by DPPH free radical scavenging capacity, ABTS free radical scavenging capacity and ferric reducing antioxidant power. Results: There were significant linear relationship of 16 phenolic compounds in the range of their concentration with the correlation coefficient (r) greater than 0.99. The precision, repeatability, stability and recovery were good. In vitro antioxidant experiments showed that Prunella vulgaris had strong ability to scavenge ABTS, DPPH free radicals and ferric reduction. The results of GRA and PLSR indicated that rosmarinic acid, caffeic acid, rutin, hyperoside and isoquercitrin were the primary compounds contributing to the antioxidant capacity. Conclusion: A LC-MS/MS method for simultaneous determination of 16 phenolic compounds in Prunella vulgaris was established and the primary antioxidant active components were further investigated by correlation analysis, so as to provide scientific basis for quality control, development and utilization of Prunella vulgaris.

Abstract Myopia is a leading cause of visual impairment in young people worldwide. It sometimes increases the risk of blindness and reduces life quality. Previous reports have revealed the treatment effects of defocus-incorporated multiple segments (DIMS) and topical atropine (ATP) on myopia control. However, no study has evaluated these two interventions together. In this retrospective study, we aimed to determine whether the combination of DIMS lenses and 0.01% ATP can slow the progression of myopia compared with DIMS lenses or single vision (SV) lenses alone. Background The relationship between arteriolar hyalinosis and renal progression in immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) is not fully understood. We aimed to investigate the clinicopathological features and outcomes of IgAN with or without arteriolar hyalinosis.Methods A total of 762 diagnosed with IgAN patients were retrospectively analyzed. We classified IgAN patients into two groups with or without arteriolar hyalinosis. Then, the clinicopathological characteristics of the two groups were compared. We used Kaplan–Meier survival analysis to compare the composite kidney outcome of the two groups and applied multivariate Cox regression analyses to test the association between arteriolar hyalinosis and composite kidney outcome.Results Overall, 412 (54.1%) patients had arteriolar hyalinosis, including 173 patients diagnosed with hypertension. IgAN patients with arteriolar hyalinosis were older and had higher proteinuria, urea, uric acid, and blood pressure, while lower eGFR than those without arteriolar hyalinosis. Subgroup analysis showed similar results in IgAN patients with hypertension. Kaplan–Meier survival analysis showed that IgAN patients with arteriolar hyalinosis had worse composite kidney outcome than those without arteriolar hyalinosis. In addition, subgroup analysis revealed that patients with hypertension have worse composite kidney outcome than those without hypertension. Multivariate Cox regression analyses confirm that arteriolar hyalinosis (HR 2.57; 95% CI 1.41–4.69; p = 0.002) is an independent risk factor for renal prognosis in IgAN patients.Conclusions Our study demonstrated that arteriolar hyalinosis is a common vascular lesion in IgAN patients. Arteriolar hyalinosis connects closely with hypertension, and arteriolar hyalinosis is an independent risk factor for renal prognosis in patients with IgAN.

Karst ecosystems are characterized by the dissolution of soluble rocks, displaying distinctive landscape features such as rugged peaks, steep slopes, and deep valleys. Afforestation is an effective approach for improving soil quality in rocky desertification areas because plants have evolved unique adaptations to thrive in such environments. However, the effects of tree species composition and cultivation patterns on the soil quality, microbial diversity, stability, and functions in rocky desertification areas remain unclear. In this work, four study plots including three types of forests—pure Pinus massoniana plantations, Toona sinensis plantations, mixed coniferous and broadleaf plantations (Pinus massoniana–Betula luminifera forests), and unforested area as the control—were established in a karst desertification area in the Hunan province of China. Soil properties including soil bulk density, soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, total phosphate, soil ammonium nitrogen, nitrate, available phosphate, soil pH, and soil microbial diversity were investigated in the study area. The results showed that the forests significantly increased the soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, and ammonium nitrogen compared to the unforested area. The microbial diversity indicators in mixed forests were significantly higher than those in the Pinus massoniana forests. The dominant bacteria phyla included Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, and Actinobacteria, while fungi species such as Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were identified in all study plots. In addition, the AVD index evaluation revealed that the mixed forests enhanced the stability of the soil microbial communities compared to the monoculture plantations and unforested plots in rocky desertification areas. The research results indicated that, among the various forest types, the mixed forest was the most effective choice for afforestation in terms of improving the soil quality by changing the soil’s physiological properties in rocky desertification areas. Our study provided guidance and insights for afforestation technology and the optimal allocation of different tree species in the cultivation and management of plantation forests in rocky desertification regions.

Background: The Controlled Nutritional Status (CONUT) score, calculated from albumin, total cholesterol, and lymphocyte count, is a useful indicator for immune-nutritional assessment and is associated with the prognosis of various diseases. However, its relationship with renal outcomes, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and all-cause mortality in patients with diabetic kidney disease is unclear.Methods: This retrospective single-center study enrolled 336 patients with biopsy-confirmed diabetic kidney disease from August 2009 to December 2018. The outcomes were progression to end-stage renal disease (ESRD), CVD events, and death. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed to estimate the association between confounding factors and outcomes. The Kaplan-Meier curve was used to compare the outcomes of the patients according to the median CONUT score. The area under the curve (AUC) evaluated with time-dependent receiver operating characteristics was used to test discriminative power of COUNT score.Results: During a median follow-up period of 5.1 years. The Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that patients in the high CONUT group (CONUT score > 3) had a significantly higher incidence of ESRD, CVD events, and all-cause mortality than those in the low CONUT group (CONUT score ≤ 3). The multivariate COX regression analysis indicated that, The CONUT score was an independent predictor of ESRD (hazards ration [HR] = 1.129, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.037-1.228, p = 0.005), CVD events (HR = 1.159, 95% CI 1.057-1.271, p = 0.002), and all-cause mortality (HR = 1.299, 95% CI 1.143-1.478, p < 0.001).Conclusion: The CONUT score is an independent risk factor for ESRD, CVD events, and overall death in patients with diabetic kidney disease.

Ischemic-reperfusion injury (IRI) is a major pathogenic factor in acute kidney injury (AKI), which directly leads to the hypoxic injury of renal tubular epithelial cells (RTECs). Although emerging studies suggest repressor element 1–silencing transcription factor (REST) as a master regulator of gene repression under hypoxia, its role in AKI remains elusive. Here, we found that REST was upregulated in AKI patients, mice, and RTECs, which was positively associated with the degree of kidney injury, while renal tubule–specific knockout of Rest significantly alleviated AKI and its progression to chronic kidney disease (CKD). Subsequent mechanistic studies indicated that suppression of ferroptosis was responsible for REST-knockdown-induced amelioration of hypoxia-reoxygenation injury, during which process Cre-expressing adenovirus–mediated REST downregulation attenuated ferroptosis through upregulating glutamate-cysteine ligase modifier subunit (GCLM) in primary RTECs. Further, REST transcriptionally repressed GCLM expression via directly binding to its promoter region. In conclusion, our findings revealed the involvement of REST, a hypoxia regulatory factor, in AKI-to-CKD transition and identified the ferroptosis-inducing effect of REST, which may serve as a promising therapeutic target for ameliorating AKI and its progression to CKD.

In this paper, modified membranes containing β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and heparin coatings were prepared on the surface of poly-4-methyl-1-pentene (PMP) hollow fibrous membrane using the high strength adhesion of polydopamine (PDA). In this paper, β-CD was added to increase the hemocompatibility of the PMP hollow fibrous membranes and the stability of the heparin coating. The uniformity of the heparin coating with β-CD addition was better than that of the groups without β-CD. After seven days of saline rinsing, the surface of the modified membranes with β-CD addition still had a large amount of heparin present, which was more stable compared to the control group. After surface modification, the modified membrane changed from hydrophobic to hydrophilic. Importantly, the protein adsorption, platelet adhesion, and hemolysis rates of the modified membranes were significantly reduced compared with the pristine membranes. The APTT values were also significantly increased. The results showed that the modified membranes with the addition of β-CD had better hydrophilicity, can maintain the stability of heparin coating for a long time, and finally showed good hemocompatibility.

Background This study introduced a novel method to reconstruct large areas of scarring caused by burns via combining autologous scar-related tissue with spit-thickness skin grafting (ASTCS). Methods 25 patients underwent reconstruction after scar resection surgeries around the joints were analyzed between Jan 2012 and Jan 2018. Patient demographics and clinical parameters were collected, autologous scar-related tissue was modified to meshed structure, and the split-thickness skin was acquired from the scalp. The scar was resected and punched by a meshing machine with a thickness of 0.3–0.5 mm at a ratio of 1:1. The secondary wounds were covered by the epidermis from a donor site. The surgical areas were bandaged for 7–10 days before the first dressing change. Results 25 patients (mean [SD] age, 26.4 [18.8] years; 16 [64%] men) underwent wounds reconstructive operations due to scar resection were reviewed. Wound location of 9 (22%), 8 (19.5%), 9 (22%), 7 (17.1%) and 8 (19.5%) cases were reconstructed in axillary, hand and wrist, popliteal fossa, elbow and neck, respectively. 39 sites of transplanted tissues survived well, and 2 sites were cured after two weeks of dressing changes. Except the analysis of injury causes, nutritional status, wound area and hospital days, patients with scar deformities in joint areas achieved satisfactory function by assessing the Vancouver Burn Skin Score and the Barthel Index Scale Scores after 12-month follow-up. Conclusions Combining autologous scar-related tissue with skin grafting provided a novel method for treating large areas of burn scars with better functional outcomes.

The process of stage grinding and magnetic separation which added dispersant H01 in regrinding is carried out to increase iron grade and reduce silicon content. Finally, the super iron concentrate with iron grade 72.11%, SiO2 content 0.20%, Al2O3 content 0.16%, acid insoluble content 0.28%, and the iron recovery is 92.72%.

Objective: The novel compound GCJ-490A has been discovered as a pan-histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor that exerts potent inhibitory activity against HDAC1, HDAC3, and HDAC6. Because of the important roles of HDACs in lung cancer development and the high distribution of GCJ-490A in lung tissue, we explored the anti-tumor potency of GCJ-490A against non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in vitro and in vivo in this study. Methods: The in vitro effects of GCJ-490A alone or combined with the EGFR inhibitor gefitinib against NSCLC were measured with proliferation, apoptosis, and colony formation assays. NSCLC xenograft models were used to investigate the efficacy of GCJ-490A combined with gefitinib for the treatment of NSCLC in vivo. Western blot assays, luciferase reporter assays, chromatin immunoprecipitation assays, quantitative real time-PCR, immunohistochemistry, and transcription factor activity assays were used to elucidate possible mechanisms. Results: GCJ-490A effectively inhibited NSCLC cell proliferation and induced apoptosis in vitro and in vivo. Interestingly, inhibition of HDAC1 and HDAC6 by GCJ-490A increased histone acetylation at the IKKα promoter and enhanced IKKα transcription, thus decreasing c-Met. Moreover, this c-Met downregulation was found to be essential for the synergistic anti-tumor activity of GCJ-490A and gefitinib. Conclusions: These findings highlight the promising potential of HDAC inhibitors in NSCLC treatment and provide a rational basis for the application of HDAC inhibitors in combination with EGFR inhibitors in clinical trials.
