Abstract Environmental stimuli not only alter gene expression profiles but also induce structural changes in cells. How distinct nuclear bodies respond to cellular stress is poorly understood. Here, we identify a subnuclear organelle named the nucleolar stress body (NoSB), the formation of which is induced by the inhibition of rRNA transcription or inactivation of rRNA processing and maturation in C. elegans. NoSB does not colocalize with other previously described subnuclear organelles. We conduct forward genetic screening and identify a bZIP transcription factor, named nucleolar stress response-1 (NOSR-1), that is required for NoSB formation. The inhibition of rRNA transcription or inactivation of rRNA processing and maturation increases nosr-1 expression. By using transcriptome analysis of wild-type animals subjected to different nucleolar stress conditions and nosr-1 mutants, we identify that the SR-like protein NUMR-1 (nuclear localized metal responsive) is the target of NOSR-1. Interestingly, NUMR-1 is a component of NoSB and itself per se is required for the formation of NoSB. We conclude that the NOSR-1/NUMR-1 axis likely responds to nucleolar stress and mediates downstream stress-responsive transcription programs and subnuclear morphology alterations in C. elegans.

Aiming at the issue of low accuracy in crop mapping and growth monitoring caused by imprecise calibration of radar time-series data, this paper proposed a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) spatio-temporal error compensation method. By constructing a compensation reference image using the buildings with stable backscattering coefficients in the study area, the error correction of time-series SAR data was realized based on the compensation model. The compensated SAR data were used to establish the Sugarcane Growth Index (SGI) according to the growth curve of sugarcane. The sugarcane area was extracted after combining the compensated SGI and optical image, and the accuracy of F1 on sugarcane distribution extraction was 92.12%. There was an improvement of 4.11% compared with no compensation method. On this basis, the newly planted and ratoon sugarcane were further classified by the expectation maximization algorithm based on the compensated SAR image at the seedling stage. The newly planted sugarcane and the ratoon sugarcane could be accurately distinguished with area extraction accuracy of 82.06% and 80.59%, respectively. Moreover, the compensated SAR data of time series during the tillering to maturity stages were used to estimate the sugarcane height, yielding an R2 value of 0.717 using a quadratic polynomial model. The Spatio-temporal error compensation method for distributed targets proposed in this study can reduce the loss of SAR data across various times and regions, and achieve accurate results of sugarcane distribution extraction and plant height estimation.

Abstract Background Programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1), as a reliable predictive biomarker, plays an important role in guiding immunotherapy of lung cancer. To investigate the value of CT-based deep learning radiomics signature to predict PD-L1 expression in non-small cell lung cancers(NSCLCs). Methods 259 consecutive patients with pathological confirmed NSCLCs were retrospectively collected and divided into the training cohort and validation cohort according to the chronological order. The univariate and multivariate analyses were used to build the clinical model. Radiomics and deep learning features were extracted from preoperative non-contrast CT images. After feature selection, Radiomics score (Rad-score) and deep learning radiomics score (DLR-score) were calculated through a linear combination of the selected features and their coefficients. Predictive performance for PD-L1 expression was evaluated via the area under the curve (AUC) of receiver operating characteristic, the calibration curves, and the decision curve analysis. Results The clinical model based on Cytokeratin 19 fragment and lobulated shape obtained an AUC of 0.767(95% CI: 0.673–0.860) in the training cohort and 0.604 (95% CI:0.477–0.731) in the validation cohort. 11 radiomics features and 15 deep learning features were selected by LASSO regression. AUCs of the Rad-score were 0.849 (95%CI: 0.783–0.914) and 0.717 (95%CI: 0.607–0.826) in the training cohort and validation cohort, respectively. AUCs of DLR-score were 0.938 (95%CI: 0.899–0.977) and 0.818(95%CI:0.727–0.910) in the training cohort and validation cohort, respectively. AUCs of the DLR-score were significantly higher than those of the Rad-score and the clinical model. Conclusion The CT-based deep learning radiomics signature could achieve clinically acceptable predictive performance for PD-L1 expression, which showed potential to be a surrogate imaging biomarker or a complement of immunohistochemistry assessment.

Abstract Microplastics (MPs) are defined as plastic particles smaller than 5 mm in size, and nanoplastics (NPs) are those MPs with a particle size of less than 1000 nm or 100 nm. The prevalence of MPs in the environment and human tissues has raised concerns about their potential negative effects on human health. Macrophages are the major defence against foreign substances in the intestine, and can be polarized into two types: the M1 phenotype and the M2 phenotype. However, the effect of NPs on the polarization of macrophages remains unclear. Herein, we selected polystyrene, one of the most plastics in the environment and controlled the particle sizes at 50 nm and 500 nm respectively to study the effects on the polarization of macrophages. We used mouse RAW264.7 cell line models in this macrophage-associated study. Experiments on cell absorption showed that macrophages could quickly ingest polystyrene nanoplastics of both diameters with time-dependent uptake. Compared to the untreated group and 10 μg/mL treatment group, macrophages exposed to 50 μg/mL groups (50 nm and 500 nm) had considerably higher levels of CD86, iNOS, and TNF-α, but decreased levels of aCD206, IL-10, and Arg-1. According to these findings, macrophage M1 and M2 polarization can both be induced and inhibited by 50 μg/mL 50 nm and 500 nm polystyrene nanoplastics. This work provided the first evidence of a possible MPs mode of action with appropriate concentration and size through the production of polarized M1, providing dietary and environmental recommendations for people, particularly those with autoimmune and autoinflammatory illnesses.

Abstract Pancreatic cancer, characterized by its poor prognosis, exhibits a marked resistance to conventional chemotherapy and immunotherapy, underscoring the urgent need for more effective treatment modalities. In light of this, the present study is designed to assess the potential antineoplastic efficacy of a combined regimen involving tetrandrine, a plant-derived alkaloid, and autophagy inhibitors in the context of pancreatic cancer. Electron microscopy and immunoblots showed that tetrandrine promoted the formation of autophagosomes and the upregulation of LC3II and the downregulation of p62 expression, indicating that tetrandrine induced autophagy in pancreatic cancer cells. Western blot revealed that tetrandrine inhibited the phosphorylation of AKT and mTOR, as well as the expression of Bcl-2, while upregulating Beclin-1 expression. Moreover, tetrandrine promoted the transcription and protein expression of ATG7. Following the combination of autophagy inhibitors and tetrandrine, the apoptotic rate and cell death significantly increased in pancreatic cancer cells. Consistent results were obtained when ATG7 was silenced. Additionally, tetrandrine induced the generation of ROS, which was involved in the activation of autophagy and apoptosis. Further investigation revealed that upon autophagy inhibition, ROS accumulated in pancreatic cancer cells, resulting in decreased mitochondrial membrane potential and further induction of apoptosis. The results of treating subcutaneous xenograft tumors with a combination of tetrandrine and chloroquine validated that autophagy inhibition enhances the toxicity of tetrandrine against pancreatic cancer in vivo. Altogether, our study demonstrates that tetrandrine induces cytoprotective autophagy in pancreatic cancer cells. Inhibiting tetrandrine-induced autophagy promotes the accumulation of ROS and enhances its toxicity against pancreatic cancer.

Abstract Background Primary pulmonary myxoid sarcoma (PPMS) is a rare, low-grade malignant tumor, constituting approximately 0.2% of all lung tumors. Despite its rarity, PPMS possesses distinctive histological features and molecular alterations, notably the presence of EWSR1-CREB1 gene fusion. However, its precise tissue origin remains elusive, posing challenges in clinical diagnosis. Case demonstration A 20-year-old male patient underwent a routine physical examination 6 months prior, revealing a pulmonary mass. Following surgical excision, microscopic evaluation unveiled predominantly short spindle-shaped tumor cells organized in a fascicular, beam-like, or reticular pattern. The stromal matrix exhibited abundant mucin, accompanied by lymphocytic and plasma cell infiltration, with Russell bodies evident in focal areas. Immunophenotypic profiling revealed positive expression of vimentin and epithelial membrane antigen in tumor cells, whereas smooth muscle actin and S-100, among others, were negative. Ki-67 proliferation index was approximately 5%. Subsequent second-generation sequencing identified the characteristic EWSR1-CREB1 gene fusion. The definitive pathological diagnosis established PPMS. The patient underwent no adjuvant chemotherapy or radiotherapy and remained recurrence-free during a 30-month follow-up period. Conclusions We report a rare case of PPMS located within the left lung lobe interlobar fissure, featuring Russell body formation within the tumor stroma, a novel finding in PPMS. Furthermore, the histomorphological characteristics of this case highlight the diagnostic challenge it poses, as it may mimic inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor, extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma, or hemangiopericytoma-like fibrous histiocytoma. Therefore, accurate diagnosis necessitates an integrated approach involving morphological, immunohistochemical, and molecular analyses.

Abstract Even though lead halide perovskite has been demonstrated as a promising optoelectronic material for next-generation display applications, achieving high-efficiency and stable pure-red (620~635 nm) emission to cover the full visible wavelength is still challenging. Here, we report perovskite light-emitting diodes emitting pure-red light at 628 nm achieving high external quantum efficiencies of 26.04%. The performance is attributed to successful synthesizing strongly confined CsPbI3 quantum dots with good stability. The strong binding 2-naphthalene sulfonic acid ligands are introduced after nucleation to suppress Ostwald ripening, meanwhile, ammonium hexafluorophosphate exchanges long chain ligands and avoids regrowth by strong binding during the purification process. Both ligands enhance the charge transport ability of CsPbI3 quantum dots. The state-of-the-art synthesis of pure red CsPbI3 quantum dots achieves 94% high quantum efficiency, which can maintain over 80% after 50 days, providing a method for synthesizing stable strong confined perovskite quantum dots.

Abstract Current brain tumor treatments are limited by the skull and BBB, leading to poor prognosis and short survival for glioma patients. We introduce a novel minimally-invasive brain tumor suppression (MIBTS) device combining personalized intracranial electric field therapy with in-situ chemotherapeutic coating. The core of our MIBTS technique is a wireless-ultrasound-powered, chip-sized, lightweight device with all functional circuits encapsulated in a small but efficient “Swiss-roll” structure, guaranteeing enhanced energy conversion while requiring tiny implantation windows ( ~ 3 × 5 mm), which favors broad consumers acceptance and easy-to-use of the device. Compared with existing technologies, competitive advantages in terms of tumor suppressive efficacy and therapeutic resolution were noticed, with maximum ~80% higher suppression effect than first-line chemotherapy and 50–70% higher than the most advanced tumor treating field technology. In addition, patient-personalized therapy strategies could be tuned from the MIBTS without increasing size or adding circuits on the integrated chip, ensuring the optimal therapeutic effect and avoid tumor resistance. These groundbreaking achievements of MIBTS offer new hope for controlling tumor recurrence and extending patient survival.

Abstract Background This meta-analysis aimed to perform a head-to-head comparison of the role of general anesthesia (GA) and local anesthesia (LA) in the management of patients with nasal bone fractures (NBFs). Methods PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were comprehensively searched. Studies investigating the clinical outcomes of GA and LA in the management of NBFs were included. Pooled odds ratios (OR) with the respective 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Heterogeneity between the included studies was evaluated. The risk of bias in the included studies was assessed. Results Eight studies were included in this meta-analysis. The pooled ORs for cosmetic results, residual septal deformity, the need for further surgery, patients’ satisfaction with the anesthesia procedure, and patients’ satisfaction with the surgery results were 0.70 (95% CI 0.18, 2.64; z = − 0.53, p = 0.5957), 1.11 (95% CI 0.37, 3.30; z = 0.18, p = 0.8558), 1.19 (95% CI 0.65, 2.20; z = 0.56, p = 0.5760), 1.57 (95% CI 0.92, 2.69; z = 1.65, p = 0.0982), and 1.00 (95% CI 0.55, 1.80; z = − 0.00, p = 0.9974). Conclusions Insignificant difference on clinical outcomes was observed between GA and LA in the manipulation of patients with NBFs, and the choice of anesthetic approach should be based on the tolerability of the methods and the severity of nasal fractures.

Abstract Brain connectome analysis suffers from the high dimensionality of connectivity data, often forcing a reduced representation of the brain at a lower spatial resolution or parcellation. This is particularly true for graph-based representations, which are increasingly used to characterize connectivity gradients, capturing patterns of systematic spatial variation in the functional connectivity structure. However, maintaining a high spatial resolution is crucial for enabling fine-grained topographical analysis and preserving subtle individual differences that might otherwise be lost. Here we introduce a computationally efficient approach to establish spatially fine-grained connectivity gradients. At its core, it leverages a set of landmarks to approximate the underlying connectivity structure at the full spatial resolution without requiring a full-scale vertex-by-vertex connectivity matrix. We show that this approach reduces computational time and memory usage while preserving informative individual features and demonstrate its application in improving brain-behavior predictions. Overall, its efficiency can remove computational barriers and enable the widespread application of connectivity gradients to capture spatial signatures of the connectome. Importantly, maintaining a spatially fine-grained resolution facilitates to characterize the spatial transitions inherent in the core concept of gradients of brain organization.

Abstract An Electroencephalography (EEG) dataset utilizing rich text stimuli can advance the understanding of how the brain encodes semantic information and contribute to semantic decoding in brain-computer interface (BCI). Addressing the scarcity of EEG datasets featuring Chinese linguistic stimuli, we present the ChineseEEG dataset, a high-density EEG dataset complemented by simultaneous eye-tracking recordings. This dataset was compiled while 10 participants silently read approximately 13 hours of Chinese text from two well-known novels. This dataset provides long-duration EEG recordings, along with pre-processed EEG sensor-level data and semantic embeddings of reading materials extracted by a pre-trained natural language processing (NLP) model. As a pilot EEG dataset derived from natural Chinese linguistic stimuli, ChineseEEG can significantly support research across neuroscience, NLP, and linguistics. It establishes a benchmark dataset for Chinese semantic decoding, aids in the development of BCIs, and facilitates the exploration of alignment between large language models and human cognitive processes. It can also aid research into the brain’s mechanisms of language processing within the context of the Chinese natural language.

Abstract Background Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) stands out as the most prevalent epithelial malignant thyroid tumor. Thyroid primary follicular lymphoma (PFL) represents a rare malignant tumor originating from mesenchymal tissues. The concurrent occurrence of PTC and PFL is exceptionally rare, particularly in the context of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, presenting significant challenges in clinical diagnosis and treatment. Case demonstration A 44-year-old female patient presented with a neck mass persisting for over 1 month. The patient underwent surgery, and the incised tissues were subjected to pathology examinations, along with immunohistochemistry and next-generation sequencing tests suggestive of an EZH2 gene mutation in the tumor cells. The final pathological diagnosis confirmed the presence of PTC combined with PFL. Following a 27-month follow-up, the patient displayed no signs of recurrence or metastasis. Conclusions The concurrent occurrence of PTC and PFL poses notable challenges in clinical practice, requiring careful consideration in diagnosis and treatment. Herein, we present a rare case of PTC combined with PFL featuring an EZH2 gene mutation, which can be easily overlooked in the context of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. The patient’s favorable response to surgical and radiotherapeutic interventions underscores the importance of accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment strategies in similar cases.

Abstract Measuring the three-dimensional (3D) distribution of chemistry in nanoscale matter is a longstanding challenge for metrological science. The inelastic scattering events required for 3D chemical imaging are too rare, requiring high beam exposure that destroys the specimen before an experiment is completed. Even larger doses are required to achieve high resolution. Thus, chemical mapping in 3D has been unachievable except at lower resolution with the most radiation-hard materials. Here, high-resolution 3D chemical imaging is achieved near or below one-nanometer resolution in an Au-Fe3O4 metamaterial within an organic ligand matrix, Co3O4-Mn3O4 core-shell nanocrystals, and ZnS-Cu0.64S0.36 nanomaterial using fused multi-modal electron tomography. Multi-modal data fusion enables high-resolution chemical tomography often with 99% less dose by linking information encoded within both elastic (HAADF) and inelastic (EDX/EELS) signals. We thus demonstrate that sub-nanometer 3D resolution of chemistry is measurable for a broad class of geometrically and compositionally complex materials.

Abstract Human cortical maturation has been posited to be organized along the sensorimotor-association axis, a hierarchical axis of brain organization that spans from unimodal sensorimotor cortices to transmodal association cortices. Here, we investigate the hypothesis that the development of functional connectivity during childhood through adolescence conforms to the cortical hierarchy defined by the sensorimotor-association axis. We tested this pre-registered hypothesis in four large-scale, independent datasets (total n = 3355; ages 5–23 years): the Philadelphia Neurodevelopmental Cohort (n = 1207), Nathan Kline Institute-Rockland Sample (n = 397), Human Connectome Project: Development (n = 625), and Healthy Brain Network (n = 1126). Across datasets, the development of functional connectivity systematically varied along the sensorimotor-association axis. Connectivity in sensorimotor regions increased, whereas connectivity in association cortices declined, refining and reinforcing the cortical hierarchy. These consistent and generalizable results establish that the sensorimotor-association axis of cortical organization encodes the dominant pattern of functional connectivity development.

Abstract Objective As an experimental biological science, physiology has been taught as an integral component of medical curricula for a long time in China. The teaching effectiveness of physiology courses will directly affect students' learning of other medical disciplines. The purpose of this study is to investigate the current situation and changes in physiology teaching over 30 years in Chinese medical schools. Methods National survey was conducted online on the platform SoJump via WeChat and the web. The head of the physiology department in medical school was asked to indicate the information of physiology education from three periods: 1991–2000, 2001–2010, and 2011–2020. The responses of 80 leaders of the Department of Physiology from mainland Chinese medical schools were included in the study for analysis. Results The survey showed that the class hours, both of theory and practice, had been decreased. During the past 20 years, the total number of physiology teachers, the number of physiology teachers who had been educated in medical schools, and the number of technicians had been reduced, whereas teachers with doctor’s degrees had been increased. In addition to traditional didactic teaching, new teaching approaches, including problem-based learning/case-based learning/team-based learning, integrated curriculum and formative evaluation systems, had been employed, mostly for more than 5 years, in some medical schools. Conclusion The present study has provided historical data regarding the current status of physiology education in China and that in the past thirty years by showing that physiology education in China has developed quickly,even it faces many challenges.

Abstract Providing additional degrees of freedom to manipulate light, spatiotemporal optical vortex (STOV) beams carrying transverse orbital angular momentum are of fundamental importance for spatiotemporal control of light-matter interactions. Unfortunately, existing methods to generate STOV are plagued by various limitations such as inefficiency, bulkiness, and complexity. Here, we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate a microscale singlet platform composed of a slanted nanograting to generate STOV. Leveraging the intrinsic topological singularity induced by C 2 symmetry and z-mirror symmetry breaking of the slanted nanograting, STOV is generated through the Fourier transform of the spiral phase in the momentum-frequency space to the spatiotemporal domain. In experiments, we observe the space-time evolution of STOV carried by femtosecond pulses using a time-resolved interferometry technique and achieve a generation efficiency exceeding 40%. Our work sheds light on a compact and versatile platform for light pulse shaping, and paves the way towards a fully integrated system for spatiotemporal light manipulation.

BackgroundDepression is increasingly recognized as a factor affecting infertility and the causal relationship between them remains controversial. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between depression and infertility using Mendelian randomization (MR) and cross-sectional study, and to explore the potential mediating role of obesity.MethodsThe cross-sectional study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2013-2018. Multivariable-adjusted logistic regression was used to assess the association between depression and infertility risk, and mediation analysis was to examine the mediating effect of obesity. Then, we performed MR analyses to investigate the causal effect of depression on infertility. Instrumental variables for depression were obtained from a genome-wide association meta-analysis (135,458 cases and 344,901 controls), and summary level data for infertility were obtained from the FinnGen database (6,481 cases and 68,969 controls).ResultsIn the cross-sectional study, a total of 2,915 participants between the ages of 18 and 45 were included, of whom 389 were infertile. We observed that depression was strongly associated with an increased risk of infertility (OR=1.66, 95%CI: 1.19, 2.33), and this relationship remained significant in mild (OR=1.45, 95% CI: 1.09, 1.93), moderate (OR=1.89, 95% CI: 1.26, 2.84), and severe depression (OR=1.74, 95% CI: 1.02, 2.99). Mediation analysis showed that obesity mediated 7.15% and 15.91% of the relationship between depression and infertility for body mass index and waist circumference. Background: Voriconazole plasma concentration exhibits significant variability and maintaining it within the therapeutic range is the key to enhancing its efficacy. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the prevalence of patients achieving the therapeutic range of plasma voriconazole concentration and identify associated factors.Methods: Eligible studies were identified through the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases from their inception until 18 November 2023. We conducted a meta-analysis using a random-effects model to determine the prevalence of patients who reached the therapeutic plasma voriconazole concentration range. Factors associated with plasma voriconazole concentration were summarized from the included studies.Results: Of the 60 eligible studies, 52 reported the prevalence of patients reaching the therapeutic range, while 20 performed multiple linear regression analyses. The pooled prevalence who achieved the therapeutic range was 56% (95% CI: 50%–63%) in studies without dose adjustment patients. The pooled prevalence of adult patients was 61% (95% CI: 56%–65%), and the pooled prevalence of children patients was 55% (95% CI: 50%–60%) The study identified, in the children population, several factors associated with plasma voriconazole concentration, including age (coefficient 0.08, 95% CI: 0.01 to 0.14), albumin (−0.05 95% CI: −0.09 to −0.01), in the adult population, some factors related to voriconazole plasma concentration, including omeprazole (1.37, 95% CI 0.82 to 1.92), pantoprazole (1.11, 95% CI: 0.17–2.04), methylprednisolone (−1.75, 95% CI: −2.21 to −1.30), and dexamethasone (−1.45, 95% CI: −2.07 to −0.83).Conclusion: The analysis revealed that only approximately half of the patients reached the plasma voriconazole concentration therapeutic range without dose adjustments and the pooled prevalence of adult patients reaching the therapeutic range is higher than that of children. Therapeutic drug monitoring is crucial in the administration of voriconazole, especially in the children population. IntroductionWe have recently demonstrated that Sox10-expressing (Sox10+) cells give rise to mainly type-III neuronal taste bud cells that are responsible for sour and salt taste. The two tissue compartments containing Sox10+ cells in the surrounding of taste buds include the connective tissue core of taste papillae and von Ebner’s glands (vEGs) that are connected to the trench of circumvallate and foliate papillae.MethodsIn this study, we performed single cell RNA-sequencing of the epithelium of Sox10-Cre/tdT mouse circumvallate/vEG complex and used inducible Cre mouse models to map the cell lineages of vEGs and/or connective tissue (including stromal and Schwann cells).ResultsTranscriptomic analysis indicated that Sox10 expression was enriched in the cell clusters of vEG ducts that contained abundant proliferating cells, while Sox10-Cre/tdT expression was enriched in type-III taste bud cells and vEG ductal cells. In vivo lineage mapping showed that the traced cells were distributed in circumvallate taste buds concurrently with those in the vEGs, but not in the connective tissue. Moreover, multiple genes encoding pathogen receptors were enriched in the vEG ducts hosting Sox10+ cells.DiscussionOur data supports that it is the vEGs, not connective tissue core, that serve as the niche of Sox10+ taste bud progenitors. If this is also true in humans, our data indicates that vEG duct is a source of Sox10+ taste bud progenitors and susceptible to pathogen infections.

Study region: Purple soil sloping cropland, a representative landscape in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, and is the main distributed agricultural basis of the Sichuan Basin, Southwest China. Study focus: This study investigated the responses of runoff P loss to several rainfall categories, the combined application of manure and chemical fertilizers, and contour cultivation by analyzing 120 rainfall events that transpired between 2008 and 2022 on a representative purple soil sloping cropland. There were five treatment combinations utilized in this study: no fertilizer application with downslope cultivation (CK), chemical fertilizer application with downslope cultivation (T1), manure and chemical fertilizer application with downslope cultivation (T2), 1.5-fold chemical fertilizer application with downslope cultivation (T3), and chemical fertilizer application with contour cultivation (T4). New hydrological insight of the region: The runoff depth during large rainstorms was significantly higher (21.5–252.4 %) than that of other rainfall categories (p < 0.05). Dissolved phosphorus (DP) loss was highest during rainstorms, whereas the highest particulate phosphorus (PP) loss was observed during large rainstorms. The runoff depth and sediment yield were significantly higher in CK than those in other treatments (p < 0.05). There were significant linear relationships between runoff depth and PP loss, DP concentration (p < 0.05). The results of this study have great significance in improving our understanding of the characteristics associated with runoff P loss in sloping croplands in Southwest China.

BackgroundCurrent research offers limited clarity on the correlation between waist circumference and chronic pain prevalence.ObjectiveThis investigation seeks to elucidate the potential relationship between waist circumference and chronic pain and their causal association.MethodsAn observational study was conducted, leveraging data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) collected between 2001 and 2004. The multivariable logistic regression was used to assess the relationship between waist circumference and chronic pain. Furthermore, a meta-analysis of Mendelian Randomization (MR) was applied to explore a causal relationship between waist circumference and pain.ResultsThe observational study, post multivariable adjustment, indicated that an increase in waist circumference by 1 dm (decimeter) correlates with a 14% elevation in chronic pain risk (Odds Ratio [OR] = 1.14, 95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 1.04–1.24, p = 0.01). Moreover, the meta-analysis of MR demonstrated that an increased waist circumference was associated with a genetic predisposition to pain risk (OR = 1.14, 95%CI: 1.06–1.23, p = 0.0007).ConclusionObservational analysis confirmed a significant relationship between increased waist circumference and the incidence of chronic pain, and results based on MR Study identified increased waist circumference as potentially causal for pain.

Abstract Catalpa bungei is a precious timber species distributed in North China where drought often occurs. To clarify adaptive responses of C. bungei to partial- and full- root-zone drought under the influence of nitrogen forms, a two-factor experiment was conducted in which well-watered (WW), partial root-zone drought in horizontal direction (H-PRD) and in vertical direction (V-PRD), and full root-zone drought (FRD) were combined with nitrate-nitrogen (NN) and ammonium-nitrogen (AN) treatments. C. bungei responded to FRD by sharply closing stomata, decreasing gas exchange rate and increasing leaf instantaneous water use efficiency (WUE i). Under FRD condition, the growth of seedlings was severely inhibited and the effect of N forms was covered up by the drastic drought effect. In comparison, stomata conductance and gas exchanges were moderately inhibited by PRDs. WUE i in V-PRD treatment was superior to H-PRD due to the active stomata regulation resulting from a higher ABA level and active transcription of genes in abscisic acid (ABA) signaling pathway under V-PRD. Under both PRDs and FRD, nitrate benefited antioxidant defense, stomata regulation and leaf WUE i. Under V-PRD, WUE i in nitrate treatment was superior to that in ammonium treatment due to active stomata regulation by signaling network of nitric oxide (NO), Ca2+ and ABA. Under FRD, WUE i was higher in nitrate treatment due to the favoring photosynthetic efficiency resulting from active NO signal and antioxidant defense. The interactive effect of water and N forms was significant on wood xylem development. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) largely contributes to stress tolerance and xylem development.

Abstract Bulimia, which means a person has episodes of eating a very large amount of food (bingeing) during which the person feels a loss of control over their eating, is the most primitive reason for being overweight and obese. The extended literature has indicated that childhood emotional abuse has a close relationship with adverse mood states, bulimia, and obesity. To comprehensively understand the potential links among these factors, we evaluated a multiple mediation model in which anxiety/depression and bulimia were mediators between childhood emotional abuse and body mass index (BMI). A set of self-report questionnaires, including the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), Beck Anxiety Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI), was sent out. Clinical data from 37 obese patients (age: 29.65 ± 5.35, body mass index (BMI): 37.59 ± 6.34) and 37 demographically well-matched healthy people with normal body weight (age: 31.35 ± 10.84, BMI: 22.16 ± 3.69) were included in the investigation. We first performed an independent t-test to compare all scales or subscale scores between the two groups. Then, we conducted Pearson correlation analysis to test every two variables’ pairwise correlation. Finally, multiple mediation analysis was performed with BMI as the outcome variable, and childhood emotional abuse as the predictive variable. Pairs of anxiety, bulimia, and depression, bulimia were selected as the mediating variables in different multiple mediation models separately. An electron vortex beam (EVB) carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) plays a key role in a series of fundamental scientific researches, such as chiral energy-loss spectroscopy and magnetic dichroism spectroscopy. So far, almost all the experimentally created EVBs manifest isotropic doughnut intensity patterns. Here, based on the correlation between local divergence angle of electron beam and phase gradient along azimuthal direction, we show that free electrons can be tailored to EVBs with customizable intensity patterns independent of the carried OAM. As proof-of-concept, by using computer generated hologram and designing phase masks to shape the incident free electrons in the transmission electron microscope, three structured EVBs carrying identical OAM are tailored to exhibit completely different intensity patterns. Furthermore, through the modal decomposition, we quantitatively investigate their OAM spectral distributions and reveal that structured EVBs present a superposition of a series of different eigenstates induced by the locally varied geometries. These results not only generalize the concept of EVB, but also demonstrate an extra highly controllable degree of freedom for electron beam manipulation in addition to OAM.

Sortilin-related receptor 1 (SORL1) is a critical gene associated with late-onset Alzheimer’s disease. SORL1 contributes to the development and progression of this neurodegenerative condition by affecting the transport and metabolism of intracellular β-amyloid precursor protein. To better understand the underlying mechanisms of SORL1 in the pathogenesis of late-onset Alzheimer’s disease, in this study, we established a mouse model of Sorl1 gene knockout using clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats-associated protein 9 technology. We found that Sorl1-knockout mice displayed deficits in learning and memory. Furthermore, the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor was significantly downregulated in the hippocampus and cortex, and amyloid β-protein deposits were observed in the brains of Sorl1-knockout mice. In vitro, hippocampal neuronal cell synapses from homozygous Sorl1-knockout mice were impaired. The expression of synaptic proteins, including Drebrin and NR2B, was significantly reduced, and also their colocalization. Additionally, by knocking out the Sorl1 gene in N2a cells, we found that expression of the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor, NR2B, and cyclic adenosine monophosphate-response element binding protein was also inhibited. These findings suggest that SORL1 participates in the pathogenesis of late-onset Alzheimer’s disease by regulating the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor NR2B/cyclic adenosine monophosphate-response element binding protein signaling axis.

Purpose: To evaluate the myopia risk in school-aged children one year after lifting a pandemic-related lockdown and develop a tool to identify high-risk groups. Methods: In total, 38,079 children without myopia from 38 schools were included. The outcomes were myopia incidence and progression in 1 year after the COVID-19 lockdown was lifted, both obtained by the spherical equivalent refraction (SER). We separated the population into an exploratory (75%) and a validation sample (25%) to construct the risk score model. Results: In total, 9811 (29.57%) students became myopic, and the overall myopia progression was 0.22 ± 0.62 D. Even less myopia progression was noted in the pre-myopia group at baseline (All: P = 0.045, Boy: P = 0.005). The risk score model included seven predictors: gender, grade, SER at baseline, residence, parental myopia, eye discomfort symptoms, and online courses. The model had a score range of 0–46 and an optimal cutoff of 34. The area under the receiver operating curve of the model was 0.726 (0.719–0.732) for the exploratory sample and 0.731 (0.720–0.742) for the validation sample. Conclusions: The risk score can serve as a practical tool for classifying the risk of myopia in school-aged children.

Abstract As is known, having a reliable analysis of energy sources is an important task toward sustainable development. Solar energy is one of the most advantageous types of renewable energy. Compared to fossil fuels, it is cleaner, freely available, and can be directly exploited for electricity. Therefore, this study is concerned with suggesting novel hybrid models for improving the forecast of Solar Irradiance (IS). First, a predictive model, namely Feed-Forward Artificial Neural Network (FFANN) forms the non-linear contribution between the IS and dominant meteorological and temporal parameters (including humidity, temperature, pressure, cloud coverage, speed and direction of wind, month, day, and hour). Then, this framework is optimized using several metaheuristic algorithms to create hybrid models for predicting the IS. According to the accuracy assessments, metaheuristic algorithms attained satisfying training for the FFANN by using 80% of the data. Moreover, applying the trained models to the remaining 20% proved their high proficiency in forecasting the IS in unseen environmental circumstances. A comparison among the optimizers revealed that Equilibrium Optimization (EO) could achieve a higher accuracy than Wind-Driven Optimization (WDO), Optics Inspired Optimization (OIO), and Social Spider Algorithm (SOSA). In another phase of this study, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is applied to identify the most contributive meteorological and temporal factors. The PCA results can be used to optimize the problem dimension, as well as to suggest effective real-world measures for improving solar energy production. Lastly, the EO-based solution is yielded in the form of an explicit formula for a more convenient estimation of the IS.

Abstract Background Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are involved in the regulation of progression and drug resistance in ovarian cancer (OC). In the present study, we aimed to explore the role of circRAD23B, a newly identified circRNA, in the regulation of carboplatin-resistant OC. Methods CircRAD23B expression levels were measured using qRT-PCR. The biological roles of circRAD23B were analysed using CCK-8, colony formation, EDU, flow cytometry, and cell viability assays. RNA pull-down and luciferase assays were used to investigate the interactions of circRAD23B with mRNAs and miRNAs. Results CircRAD23B was significantly increased in carboplatin-resistant OC tissues. CircRAD23B promoted proliferation and reduced sensitivity to carboplatin in cell lines and patient-derived organoids (PDOs), consistent with in vivo findings. Mechanistically, circRAD23B acted as a molecular sponge, abrogating its inhibitory effect on Y-box binding protein 1 (YBX1) by adsorbing miR-1287-5p. Rescue experiments confirmed that the pro-proliferation and carboplatin resistance mediated by circRAD23B was partially reversed by the upregulation of miR-1287-5p. Conclusions Our results demonstrated, for the first time, the role of the circRAD23B/miR-1287-5p/YBX1 axis in OC progression and carboplatin resistance in cell lines, PDOs, and animal models, providing a basis for the development of targeted therapies for patients with OC.

Abstract Outcomes of past decisions profoundly shape our behavior. However, choice-outcome associations can become volatile and adaption to such changes is of importance. The present study combines pharmaco-electroencephalography with computational modeling to examine whether intranasal oxytocin can modulate reinforcement learning under a volatile vs. a stable association. Results show that oxytocin increases choice accuracy independent of learning context, which is paralleled by a larger N2pc and a smaller P300. Model-based analyses reveal that while oxytocin promotes learning by accelerating value update of outcomes in the volatile context, in the stable context it does so by improving choice consistency. These findings suggest that oxytocin’s facilitatory effects on learning may be exerted via improving early attentional selection and late neural processing efficiency, although at the computational level oxytocin’s actions are highly adaptive between learning contexts. Our findings provide proof of concept for oxytocin’s therapeutic potential in mental disorders with adaptive learning dysfunction.

Cervical cancer remains a significant health burden in China, characterized by high incidence and mortality rates, which are exacerbated by low Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination coverage, leading to substantial loss of productivity, emotional suffering, and family strain. Understanding factors that influence HPV awareness and knowledge is crucial for developing effective educational strategies. This cross-sectional study, conducted from September to October 2022, involved 2,679 college students from various educational institutions in Jiangsu Province, China. Data were collected via an online questionnaire covering demographics, HPV knowledge, and vaccination behaviors. Statistical analyses, including Chi-square tests and multifactorial logistic regression, were used to identify factors influencing HPV knowledge. The study revealed that while over 90% of students correctly identified HPV’s transmission and risks, significant knowledge gaps and misconceptions persist, particularly regarding HPV’s association with HIV/AIDS and its treatment. Factors significantly associated with better HPV knowledge included age (22–24 years), female gender, being a medical major, being in a relationship, familiarity with HPV, and participation in sexual education programs. Despite a high willingness to receive the HPV vaccine (91.64%), actual vaccination rates remained low. These findings suggest that while Chinese college students were generally aware of HPV, targeted educational interventions are essential to address knowledge gaps and promote HPV vaccination effectively.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) represents an autoimmune disorder that affects multiple systems. In the treatment of this condition, the focus primarily revolves around inflammation suppression and immunosuppression. Consequently, targeted therapy has emerged as a prevailing approach. Currently, the quest for highly sensitive and specifically effective targets has gained significant momentum in the context of SLE treatment. Lymphocyte activation gene-3 (LAG-3) stands out as a crucial inhibitory receptor that binds to pMHC-II, thereby effectively dampening autoimmune responses. Fibrinogen-like protein 1 (FGL1) serves as the principal immunosuppressive ligand for LAG-3, and their combined action demonstrates a potent immunosuppressive effect. This intricate mechanism paves the way for potential SLE treatment by targeting LAG-3 with FGL1. This work provides a comprehensive summary of LAG-3's role in the pathogenesis of SLE and elucidates the feasibility of leveraging FGL1 as a therapeutic approach for SLE management. It introduces a novel therapeutic target and opens up new avenues of therapeutic consideration in the clinical context of SLE treatment.

Nuclear export of the viral ribonucleoprotein (vRNP) is a critical step in the influenza A virus (IAV) life cycle and may be an effective target for the development of anti-IAV drugs. The host factor ras-related nuclear protein (RAN) is known to participate in the life cycle of several viruses, but its role in influenza virus replication remains unknown. In the present study, we aimed to determine the function of RAN in influenza virus replication using different cell lines and subtype strains. We found that RAN is essential for the nuclear export of vRNP, as it enhances the binding affinity of XPO1 toward the viral nuclear export protein NS2. Depletion of RAN constrained the vRNP complex in the nucleus and attenuated the replication of various subtypes of influenza virus. Using in silico compound screening, we identified that bepotastine could dissociate the RAN-XPO1-vRNP trimeric complex and exhibit potent antiviral activity against influenza virus both in vitro and in vivo. This study demonstrates the important role of RAN in IAV replication and suggests its potential use as an antiviral target.

ABSTRACTPreviously, we reported a cohort of Japanese encephalitis (JE) patients with Guillain–Barré syndrome. However, the evidence linking Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) infection and peripheral nerve injury (PNI) remains limited, especially the epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and outcome significantly differ from traditional JE. We performed a retrospective and multicenter study of 1626 patients with JE recorded in the surveillance system of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, spanning the years 2016–2020. Cases were classified into type 1 and type 2 JE based on whether the JE was combined with PNI or not. A comparative analysis was conducted on demographic characteristics, clinical manifestations, imaging findings, electromyography data, laboratory results, and treatment outcomes. Among 1626 laboratory confirmed JE patients, 230 (14%) were type 2 mainly located along the Yellow River in northwest China. In addition to fever, headache, and disturbance of consciousness, type 2 patients experienced acute flaccid paralysis of the limbs, as well as severe respiratory muscle paralysis. These patients presented a greater mean length of stay in hospital (children, 22 years [range, 1–34]; adults, 25 years [range, 0–183]) and intensive care unit (children, 16 years [range, 1–30]; adults, 17 years [range, 0–102]). The mortality rate was higher in type 2 patients (36/230 [16%]) compared to type 1 (67/1396 [5%]). The clinical classification of the diagnosis of JE may play a crucial role in developing a rational treatment strategy, thereby mitigating the severity of the disease and potentially reducing disability and mortality rates among patients.

ABSTRACTBackground Preeclampsia (PE) is a pregnancy disorder that represents a major cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality.Methods This network meta-analysis was registered with PROSPERO. We searched the PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov. and Embase databases for studies published from inception to the 31st of March 2023. RevMan5.3 software provided by the Cochrane Collaboration was used for direct meta-analysis (DMA) statistical analysis. Funnel maps, network meta-analysis (NMA), the surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) to rank the different interventions and publication bias were generated by STATA 17.0 software.Results We included eight randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving a total of 1192 women with PE; two studies were of high quality and six were of moderate quality. Eight interventions were addressed in the NMA. In the DMA, we found that blood pressure in the Ketanserin group were significantly higher than those in the Nicardipine group. NMA showed that blood pressure in the Dihydralazine group was significantly higher than that in the Methyldopa, Labetalol, Nicardipine and Diltiazem groups. And the blood pressure in the Labetalol group was significantly lower than that in the Nicardipine group. SUCRA values showed that Diltiazem was more effective in lowering blood pressure than other drugs looked at in this study.Conclusion According to the eight RCTs included in this study, Diltiazem was the most effective in reducing blood pressure in PE patients; Labetalol and Nicardipine also had good effects. Diltiazem is preferred for the treatment of patients with severe PE and high blood pressure.

Abstract Objective To address the question of axillary lymph node staging in ductal carcinoma in situ with microinvasion (DCIS‐MI), we retrospectively evaluated axillary lymph nodes metastasis (ALNM) rate in a cohort of postsurgical DCIS‐MI patients. By analyzing these data, we aimed to generate clinically relevant insights to inform treatment decision‐making for this patient population. Methods A systematic search was conducted on PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, The Cochrane Library, CNKI, Wanfang Database, Wipe, and China Biomedical Literature Database to identify relevant publications in any language. All the analyses were performed using Stata 16.0 software. Results Among the 28 studies involving 8279 patients, the pooled analysis revealed an ALNM rate of 8% (95% CI, 7% to 10%) in patients with DCIS‐MI. Furthermore, the rates of axillary lymph node macrometastasis, micrometastasis, and ITC in patients with DCIS‐MI were 2% (95% CI, 2% to 3%), 3% (95% CI, 2% to 4%), and 2% (95% CI, 1% to 3%), respectively. Moreover, 13 studies investigated the non‐sentinel lymph node (Non‐SLN) metastasis rate, encompassing a total of 1236 DCIS‐MI cases. The pooled analysis identified a Non‐SLN metastasis rate of 33% (95% CI, 14% to 55%) in patients with DCIS‐MI. Conclusion The SLNB for patients with DCIS‐MI is justifiable and could provide a novel therapeutic basis for systemic treatment decisions.

Stem cells have been documented as a new therapeutic method for ovarian injuries such as premature ovarian failure (POF). However, effects of exosomes (Exos) derived from human endometrial stem cells (EnSCs) on diminished ovarian failure remain to be carefully elucidated. Our study aims to investigate the mechanisms of EnSC-Exos in the recovery of the cisplatin-induced granulosa cell injury model in vitro or POF mouses model in vivo and whether the Hippo signaling pathway is involved in the regulation. In this study, we established successful construction of the cisplatin-induced granulosa cell injury model and evaluated Hippo signaling pathway activation in cisplatin-damaged granulosa cells (GCs). Furthermore, laser scanning confocal microscope and immunofluorescence demonstrated that EnSC-Exos can be transferred to cisplatin-damaged GCs to decrease apoptosis. In addition, the enhanced expression of YAP at the protein level as well as YAP/TEAD target genes, such as CTGF, ANKRD1, and the increase of YAP into the nucleus in immunofluorescence staining after the addition of EnSC-Exos to cisplatin-damaged GCs confirmed the suppression of Hippo signaling pathway. While in vivo, EnSC-Exos successfully remedied POF in a mouse model. Collectively, our findings suggest that chemotherapy-induced POF was associated with the activating of Hippo signaling pathway. Human EnSC-Exos significantly elevated the proliferation of ovarian GCs and the ovarian function by regulating Hippo signaling pathway. These findings provide new insights for further understanding of EnSC-Exos in the recovery of ovary function.

Multidrug-resistant bacterial infections are a major global health challenge, especially the emergence and rapid spread of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) urgently require alternative treatment options. Our study has identified that a magnolol derivative 6i as a promising agent with significant antibacterial activity against S. aureus and clinical MRSA isolates (MIC = 2–8 μg/mL), showing high membrane selectivity. Unlike traditional antibiotics, 6i demonstrated rapid bactericidal efficiency and a lower propensity for inducing bacterial resistance. Compound 6i also could inhibit biofilm formation and eradicate bacteria within biofilms. Mechanistic studies further revealed that 6i could target bacterial cell membranes, disrupting the integrity of the cell membrane and leading to increased DNA leakage, resulting in potent antibacterial effects. Meanwhile, 6i also showed good plasma stability and excellent biosafety. Notably, 6i displayed good in vivo antibacterial activity in a mouse skin abscess model of MRSA-16 infection, which was comparable to the positive control vancomycin. These findings indicated that the magnolol derivative 6i possessed the potential to be a novel anti-MRSA infection agent.

ObjectivesIn this study, we compared the dynamic changes in body composition during XELOX/SOX chemotherapy in patients with gastric cancer. Furthermore, we investigated the potential impact of these changes on the occurrence of toxic side effects.MethodsPatients with gastric cancer who received adjuvant or first-line XELOX/SOX chemotherapy between January 2020 and June 2023 were enrolled. The Brief Conghua Scale was used to assess energy intake, and nutritional management was carried out with reference to the Chinese Guidelines for Nutritional Therapy of Cancer 2020. The NRS 2002 Nutritional Risk Screening Scale, PG-SGA scale, bioelectrical impedance analysis, and dynamic changes in lumbar 3 vertebral skeletal muscle index were compared between baseline and post-chemotherapy in the study. The neutropenia was evaluated using the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events V.5.0, developed by the National Institutes of Health.ResultsDynamic follow-up was completed in 39 cases, with a mean follow-up time of 117.62 ± 43.38 days. The incidence of sarcopenia increased significantly after chemotherapy, escalating from 46.2% to 51.3%. After chemotherapy, the mean L3SMI decreased from 36.00 cm2/m2 to 34.99 cm2/m2. Furthermore, when compared to pre-chemotherapy values, the body composition indexes body mass index (BMI), SL3, fat mass free index (FFMI), lean body mass (LBM), and body surface area (BSA) were significantly reduced after chemotherapy. Regardless of baseline or post-chemotherapy status, the incidence of grade ≥ 3 neutropenia was significantly higher in the sarcopenia group than in the non-sarcopenia group. Furthermore, when the skeletal muscle index decreased during chemotherapy, the incidence of grade ≥ 3 neutropenia was significantly higher in both the sarcopenia and non-sarcopenia groups compared to baseline. When the incidence of grade ≥ 3 neutropenia in the post-chemotherapy sarcopenia group was compared to baseline status, the increase was significantly higher in the sarcopenia group than in the maintenance/increase group.ConclusionsSkeletal muscle mass decreased progressively during XELOX/SOX chemotherapy in gastric cancer patients, followed by a higher incidence of grade ≥ 3 neutropenia.

Abstract Pickering multiphase systems stabilized by solid particles have recently attracted increasing attention due to their excellent stability. Among various solid stabilizers, natural and renewable cellulosic micro/nanoparticles that are derived from agricultural and forestry sources have become promising candidates for Pickering stabilization due to their unique morphological features and tunable surface properties. In this review, recent progress on forming and stabilizing Pickering multiphase systems using cellulosic colloidal particles is summarized, including the physicochemical factors affecting their assembly at the interfaces and the preparation methods suitable for producing Pickering emulsions. In addition, relevant application prospects of corresponding Pickering multiphase materials are outlined. Finally, current challenges and future perspectives of such renewable Pickering multiphase systems are presented. This review aims to encourage the utilization of cellulosic micro/nanoparticles as key components in the development of Pickering systems, leading to enhanced performance and unique functionalities.

Anisakiasis is a food-borne parasitic disease mainly caused by the third stage of Anisakis simplex (s. s.) and Anisakis pegreffii. Traditional methods for detecting of Anisakis involve morphology identification such as visual inspection, enzyme digestion, and molecular methods based on PCR, but they have certain limitations. In this study, the internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS 1) regions of Anisakis were targeted to develop a visual screening method for detecting A. simplex (s. s.) and A. pegreffii in fish meat based on recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) combined with lateral flow dipstick (LFD). Specific primers and probes were designed and optimized for temperature, reaction time, and detection threshold. LFD produced clear visual results that were easily identifiable after a consistent incubation of 10–20 min at 37 °C. The whole process of DNA amplification by RPA and readout by LFD did not exceed 30 min. In addition, the detection limit is up to 9.5 × 10−4 ng/μL, and the detection of the artificially contaminated samples showed that the developed assay can effectively and specifically detect A. simplex (s. s.) and A. pegreffii, which fully meet the market's requirements for fish food safety supervision.

Introduction: Identification of patients not meeting catheterization laboratory activation criteria by electrocardiogram (ECG) but who would benefit from early coronary intervention remains challenging in the emergency department (ED). The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether emergency physician (EP)-performed point-of-care transthoracic echocardiography (POC TTE) could help identify patients who required coronary intervention within this population. Methods: This was a retrospective observational cohort study of adult patients who presented to two EDs between 2018–2020. Patients were included if they received a POC TTE and underwent diagnostic coronary angiography within 72 hours of ED presentation. We excluded patients meeting catheterization laboratory activation criteria on initial ED ECG. Ultrasound studies were independently reviewed for presence of regional wall motion abnormalities (RWMA) by two blinded ultrasound fellowship-trained EPs. We then calculated test characteristics for coronary intervention. Results: Of the 221 patient encounters meeting inclusion criteria, 104 (47%) received coronary intervention or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) referral. Overall prevalence of RWMA on POC TTE was 35% (95% confidence interval [CI] 29–42%). Presence of RWMA had 38% (95% CI 29–49%) sensitivity and 68% (95% CI 58–76%) specificity for coronary intervention/CABG referral. Presence of “new” RWMA (presence on EP-performed POC TTE and prior normal echocardiogram) had 43% (95% CI 10–82%) sensitivity and 93% (95% CI 66–100%) specificity for coronary intervention/CABG referral. The EP-performed POC TTE interpretation of RWMA had 57% (95% CI 47–67%) sensitivity and 96% (95% CI 87–100%) specificity for presence of RWMA on subsequent cardiology echocardiogram during the same admission. Conclusion: Presence of RWMA on EP-performed POC TTE had limited sensitivity or specificity for coronary intervention or referral to CABG. The observed specificity appeared to trend higher in subjects with a prior echocardiogram demonstrating absence of RWMA, although a larger sample size will be required to confirm this finding. The EP-performed POC TTE RWMA had high specificity for presence of RWMA on subsequent cardiology echocardiogram. Further evaluation of the diagnostic performance of new RWMA on EP-performed POC TTE with a dedicated cohort is warranted.

Abstract Cognitive neuroscience has gained insight into covert states using experience sampling. Traditionally, this approach has focused on off-task states. However, task-relevant states are also maintained via covert processes. Our study examined whether experience sampling can also provide insights into covert goal-relevant states that support task performance. To address this question, we developed a neural state space, using dimensions of brain function variation, that allows neural correlates of overt and covert states to be examined in a common analytic space. We use this to describe brain activity during task performance, its relation to covert states identified via experience sampling, and links between individual variation in overt and covert states and task performance. Our study established deliberate task focus was linked to faster target detection, and brain states underlying this experience—and target detection—were associated with activity patterns emphasizing the fronto-parietal network. In contrast, brain states underlying off-task experiences—and vigilance periods—were linked to activity patterns emphasizing the default mode network. Our study shows experience sampling can not only describe covert states that are unrelated to the task at hand, but can also be used to highlight the role fronto-parietal regions play in the maintenance of covert task-relevant states.

Abstract Technical advances in neuroimaging, notably in fMRI, have allowed distributed patterns of functional connectivity to be mapped in the human brain with increasing spatiotemporal resolution. Recent years have seen a growing interest in extending this approach to rodents and non-human primates to understand the mechanism of fMRI connectivity and complement human investigations of the functional connectome. Here, we discuss current challenges and opportunities of fMRI connectivity mapping across species. We underscore the critical importance of physiologically decoding neuroimaging measures of brain (dys)connectivity via multiscale mechanistic investigations in animals. We next highlight a set of general principles governing the organization of mammalian connectivity networks across species. These include the presence of evolutionarily conserved network systems, a dominant cortical axis of functional connectivity, and a common repertoire of topographically conserved fMRI spatiotemporal modes. We finally describe emerging approaches allowing comparisons and extrapolations of fMRI connectivity findings across species. As neuroscientists gain access to increasingly sophisticated perturbational, computational and recording tools, cross-species fMRI offers novel opportunities to investigate the large-scale organization of the mammalian brain in health and disease.

Abstract Polarization, one of the fundamental properties of light, is critical for certain imaging applications because it captures information from the scene that cannot directly be recorded by traditional intensity cameras. Currently, mainstream approaches for polarization imaging rely on strong dichroism of birefringent crystals or artificially fabricated structures that exhibit a high diattenuation typically exceeding 99%, which corresponds to a polarization extinction ratio (PER) >~100. This not only limits the transmission efficiency of light, but also makes them either offer narrow operational bandwidth or be non-responsive to the circular polarization. Here, we demonstrate a single-shot full-Stokes polarization camera incorporating a disordered metasurface array with weak dichroism. The diattenuation of the metasurface array is ~65%, which corresponds to a PER of ~2. Within the framework of compressed sensing, the proposed disordered metasurface array serves as an efficient sensing matrix. By incorporating a mask-aware reconstruction algorithm, the signal can be accurately recovered with a high probability. In our experiments, the proposed approach exhibits high-accuracy full-Stokes polarimetry and high-resolution real-time polarization imaging. Our demonstration highlights the potential of combining meta-optics with reconstruction algorithms as a promising approach for advanced imaging applications.

Battery health assessments are essential for roadside energy storage systems that facilitate electric transportation. This paper uses the samples from the charging and discharging data of the base station and the power station under different working conditions at different working hours and at different temperatures to demonstrate the decay of the battery health of a roadside energy storage system under different cycles. In this paper, for the first time, the predicted state-of-health values are obtained by extracting the characteristic quantities affecting the battery health based on three indicators: the internal resistance, the rate of change of voltage, and the change of temperature. Data on state of health are clustered by K-Means, GMM, K-Means++ and divided into high, medium, and low levels. Using a comparison of the three methods, GMM clustering appears to be the best at reflecting the charging and discharging capacity of the battery.

BackgroundOccupational injuries are one of the leading causes of death or disability in occupational populations. According to the World Health Organization and the International Labour Organization, occupational injuries were the occupational contributor responsible for the largest loss of disability-adjusted life years (DALY) globally in 2016. ObjectiveTo analyze the burden of deaths attributed to occupational injuries in Chinese population from 1990 to 2019, and provide a reference for further construction of occupational injury surveillance system. MethodsUsing the results and data of the Global Burden of Disease 2019 (GBD 2019), this study estimated the burden of deaths attributable to occupational injuries by year, sex, and age groups, and the indicators included deaths, years of life lost (YLL), mortality, and YLL rates. Age-standardized rates of deaths and YLL rates were calculated using a world standard population presented by GBD 2019. Annualized rate of change (ARC) was use to evaluate changes in the indicators over time. All results were presented as point estimates with 95% uncertainty intervals (95%UI). ResultsIn 2019, the deaths attributable to occupational injuries among women in China accounted for 33.16% of that among world's women, their YLL accounted for 31.88%, and the two indicators among Chinese men accounted for 17.98% and 17.09%, respectively. Compared with 1990, the standardized mortality rate and the standardized YLL rate attributable to occupational injuries in China in 2019 decreased, among which the ARCs of the standardized mortality rate in the whole population, men, and women were −0.68 (95%UI: −0.78, −0.51), −0.68 (95%UI: −0.80, −0.47), and −0.68 (95%UI: −0.82, −0.46), respectively. The ARCs of the standardized YLL rate in the whole population, men, and women were −0.68 (95%UI: −0.78, −0.51), −0.67 (95%UI: −0.80, −0.48), and −0.68 (95%UI: −0.81, −0.44), respectively. Absolute values of the ARCs of the standardized mortality rate and the standardized YLL rate attributable to occupational injuries from 1990 to 2010 were higher than those from 2010 to 2019. The ARCs of the standardized YLL rate for road injuries, falls, and drowning from 1990 to 2010 were −0.55 (95%UI: −0.67, −0.36), −0.57 (95%UI: −0.73, −0.38), −0.77 (95%UI: −0.84, −0.63), and the ARCs from 2010 to 2019 were −0.27 (95%UI: −0.46, −0.02), −0.07 (95%UI: −0.34, −0.26), −0.06 (95%UI: −0.32, −0.29), respectively. In 2019, the standardized mortality rate attributable to occupational injuries among Chinese men was 5.68/100000 (95%UI: 3.89/100000, 8.23/100000), and the standardized YLL rate was 286.27/100000 (95%UI: 197.58/100000, 411.38/100000); the standardized mortality rate attributable to occupational injuries among Chinese women was 1.55/100000 (95%UI: 0.99/100000, 2.36/100000), and the standardized YLL rate was 80.85/100000 (95%UI: 51.61/100000, 122.07/100000). ConclusionFrom 1990 to 2019, the burden of deaths attributable to occupational injuries in China is declined, but the rate of decline is slowed down in the last decade. The burden of deaths attributable to occupational injuries among women in China still accounts for a high proportion of the global burden among women. The burden of deaths attributable to occupational injuries among Chinese men is higher than that among Chinese women.

BackgroundThe severity of occupational injury in countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, and Germany is usually analyzed using lost workdays, but in existing occupational injury surveillance research in China, the application of this index is rare. ObjectiveTo evaluate the application value of lost workdays in non-fatal occupational injury surveillance, and provide a reference for the construction of occupational injury surveillance index system. MethodsThe public data of European Statistics on Accidents at Work (ESAW) from 2010 to 2019 on non-fatal injury accidents in 27 member states of the European Union were used. Non-fatal occupational injury is defined as an injury event during occupational activities or at work resulting a victim's absence from work for ≥4 d. According to the European Statistics on Accidents at Work-Summary methodology, the lost workdays were divided into 8 categories (4-6 d, 7-13 d, 14-20 d, 21-30 d, 31-91 d, 92-182 d, 183 d and above, and unknown). Annual percentage change (APC) and the average annual percentage change (AAPC) were used to evaluate the overall trend changes in the incidence rate of non-fatal occupational injury accidents in different lost workdays from 2010 to 2019, and the non-fatal occupational injury accidents in key industries. The characteristics of the occurrence of non-fatal occupational injuries were analyzed in conjunction with the changes in non-fatal occupational injuries in different lost workdays in the industry. BackgroundThe United Kingdom (UK) adopts active surveillance and passive surveillance to jointly collect occupational injury data, and builds a relatively complete occupational injury surveillance system, which can provide reference for the construction of China's occupational injury surveillance system. ObjectiveTo compare the results of active surveillance and passive surveillance of occupational injuries in the UK, and to explore the joint application value of active and passive surveillance methods in the field of occupational injury prevention and control. MethodsThe non-fatal occupational injury active surveillance data from Labor Force Survey were used to calculate indicators such as number of reported cases, reporting rate, lost workdays per year, lost workdays per capita, and average lost workdays per case. The fatal passive surveillance data reported by the employers were used to calculate number of reported deaths, reported mortality, and other indicators. Join-point regression was used to estimate the reported trends of fatal and non-fatal occupational injuries from 2004 to 2020, and the annual percentage change (APC) and average annual percentage change (AAPC) were calculated. ResultsThe active surveillance data showed that from 2004 to 2020, the number of reported cases of absenteeism ≥0 d due to occupational injury decreased from 89.7 (95%CI: 85.2, 94.2) per ten thousand to 44.1 (95%CI: 39.1, 49.2) per ten thousand, and the reporting rate of occupational injury decreased from 32100/100000 (95%CI: 3050/100000, 3370/100000) to 1410/100000 (95%CI: 1250/100000, 1570/100000), showing a linear downward trend (both APC and AAPC were −3.88%, P
