Objective: To evaluate high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) features of dermatomyositis-/polymyositis- associated interstitial lung disease (DM/PM-ILD). Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the HRCT images of 148 patients with DM/PM-ILD at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University between Jan. 1, 2014, and Dec. 31, 2019. Results: The HRCT features of DM/PM-ILD were characterized by ground-glass opacities (GGO) (87.2%, 123/141), interlobular septal thickening (78.0%, 110/141), intralobular interstitial thickening (63.8%, 90/141), consolidation (29.1%, 41/141), subpleural lines (26.2%, 37/141), traction bronchiectasis (19.9%, 28/141), and honeycombing (3.5%, 5/141). Pneumomediastinum (3), pleural effusion (15), and pericardial effusion (18) were also observed. The two main radiological patterns were non-specific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP) and organism pneumonia (OP). Conclusion: HRCT features of DM/PM-ILD are heterogeneous, with various radiological patterns. Mastering the main characteristics of HRCT manifestation and the radiological patterns of DM/PM-ILD will be helpful for early identification and timely treatment.

Abstract The impact of the boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation (BSISO) on rainfall anomalies in the Yangtze–Huaihe River Basin (YHRB) was found to be modulated by the stratospheric quasi‐biennial oscillation (QBO), which is reasonable for the close associations between the QBO and summer extreme precipitation in the YHRB. It was found that the extreme precipitation preferentially occurred in the YHRB during the easterly phase of the QBO (EQBO) compared to the westerly phase of the QBO (WQBO). This was primarily because the BSISO was more prone to cause rainfall extremes in the YHRB during the EQBO summers than during the WQBO summers. The EQBO can induce the background stratospheric easterly wind to arch downward into the troposphere, which enhanced the BSISO‐associated moisture transport and moisture convergence and thus resulted in stronger rainfall extremes in the YHRB.

Abstract Background For patients with steroid-refractory acute graft-versus-host disease (SR-aGVHD), effective second-line regimens are urgently needed. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have been used as salvage regimens for SR-aGVHD in the past. However, clinical trials and an overall understanding of the molecular mechanisms of MSCs combined with basiliximab for SR-aGVHD are limited, especially in haploidentical haemopoietic stem cell transplantation (HID HSCT). Methods The primary endpoint of this multicentre, randomized, controlled trial was the 4-week complete response (CR) rate of SR-aGVHD. A total of 130 patients with SR-aGVHD were assigned in a 1:1 randomization schedule to the MSC group (receiving basiliximab plus MSCs) or control group (receiving basiliximab alone) (NCT04738981). Results Most enrolled patients (96.2%) received HID HSCT. The 4-week CR rate of SR-aGVHD in the MSC group was obviously better than that in the control group (83.1% vs. 55.4%, P = 0.001). However, for the overall response rates at week 4, the two groups were comparable. More patients in the control group used ≥ 6 doses of basiliximab (4.6% vs. 20%, P = 0.008). We collected blood samples from 19 consecutive patients and evaluated MSC-derived immunosuppressive cytokines, including HO1, GAL1, GAL9, TNFIA6, PGE2, PDL1, TGF-β and HGF. Compared to the levels before MSC infusion, the HO1 (P = 0.0072) and TGF-β (P = 0.0243) levels increased significantly 1 day after MSC infusion. At 7 days after MSC infusion, the levels of HO1, GAL1, TNFIA6 and TGF-β tended to increase; however, the differences were not statistically significant. Although the 52-week cumulative incidence of cGVHD in the MSC group was comparable to that in the control group, fewer patients in the MSC group developed cGVHD involving ≥3 organs (14.3% vs. 43.6%, P = 0.006). MSCs were well tolerated, no infusion-related adverse events (AEs) occurred and other AEs were also comparable between the two groups. However, patients with malignant haematological diseases in the MSC group had a higher 52-week disease-free survival rate than those in the control group (84.8% vs. 65.9%, P = 0.031). Conclusions For SR-aGVHD after allo-HSCT, especially HID HSCT, the combination of MSCs and basiliximab as the second-line therapy led to significantly better 4-week CR rates than basiliximab alone. The addition of MSCs not only did not increase toxicity but also provided a survival benefit.

Cellular senescence and chronic inflammation in response to aging are considered to be indicators of brain aging; they have a great impact on the aging process and are the main risk factors for neurodegeneration. Reviewing the microglial response to aging and neuroinflammation in neurodegenerative diseases will help understand the importance of microglia in neurodegenerative diseases. This review describes the origin and function of microglia and focuses on the role of different states of the microglial response to aging and chronic inflammation on the occurrence and development of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s chorea, and Parkinson’s disease. This review also describes the potential benefits of treating neurodegenerative diseases by modulating changes in microglial states. Therefore, inducing a shift from the neurotoxic to neuroprotective microglial state in neurodegenerative diseases induced by aging and chronic inflammation holds promise for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases in the future.

Abstract This study delves into the potential of philosophical practice to enhance individual well-being within the Chinese cultural context. It begins with an exploration of the foundational components and methodologies of philosophical practice, illuminating its dialogic nature, problem-solving orientation, and focus on self-development. A comparative analysis between philosophical practice and psychological counseling is offered, indicating the former’s uniqueness in fostering equal-footing client-practitioner relationships and empowering individuals through questioning. Emphasizing the significance of these practices’ contextual applications, the study elaborates on how philosophical practice aligns with traditional Chinese dialectic principles like holism, change, and conflict acceptance. Opportunities and challenges for expanding philosophical practice within China are presented, discussing cultural nuances like introversion and stigma around mental health services. The study concludes by highlighting the limitations and suggesting directions for future investigations, underscoring the importance of cultural responsiveness and termination protocol development. Ultimately, this examination concentrates on the promising prospect of philosophical practice serving as a practical guide towards enriched existential comprehension and adaptive coping strategies that promote overall well-being in China.

Objective: There is no study on the relationship between triglyceride-glucose index (TyG index) and skeletal muscle mass in middle-aged and elderly C population. Therefore, the aim of the study is to investigate the relationship between the TyG index and weight-adjusted relative skeletal muscle index (RSMI) in middle-aged and elderly C population. Methods: We retrospectively studied 947 aged ⩾40 years subjects who got a routine medical examination in the Department of Geriatrics of R Hospital from May 2021 to March 2023. The RSMI was designed to evaluate skeletal muscle mass and calculated based on lean mass of the limbs(kg)/body weight(kg) × 100%. Skeletal muscle mass reduction was defined as a RSMI of 1-2 standard deviations (SD) below of healthy adults aged 30-49 years old. Considering the quartile groups of the TyG index, the subjects were assigned to 4 groups: Q1 (less than or equal to 8.171), Q2 (from 8.172 to 8.569), Q3 (from 8.570 to 8.992), and Q4 (greater than or equal to 8.993). Results: With TyG index increased, RSMI levels significantly reduced( P < .001). Spearman’s correlation analysis showed that the TyG index was negatively correlated with RSMI in males (r = −0.320) and females (r = −0.240). The TyG index was positively correlated with body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) ( P < .05). Besides, binary logistic regression analysis showed that the risk of developing reduced skeletal muscle mass in the group Q4 was 2.131 (95%CI:1.118-4.064) in males; and was 2.472 (95%CI:1.581-3.867) in females compared to the Q1 group. Conclusion: TyG index was negatively correlated with relative skeletal muscle index, and a higher TyG index was associated with the development of reduced skeletal muscle mass independently of other influencing factors. Therefore, the TyG index promises to be a predictor of skeletal muscle mass loss.

Background: Acute exacerbation of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies-associated interstitial lung disease (AE-IIM-ILD) is a significant event associated with increased morbidity and mortality. However, few studies investigated the potential prognostic factors contributing to mortality in patients who experience AE-IIM-ILD. Objectives: The purpose of our study was to comprehensively investigate whether high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) findings predict the 1-year mortality in patients who experience AE-IIM-ILD. Methods: A cohort of 69 patients with AE-IIM-ILD was retrospectively created. The cohort was 79.7 % female, with a mean age of 50.7. Several HRCT features, including total interstitial lung disease extent (TIDE), distribution patterns, and radiologic ILD patterns, were assessed. A directed acyclic graph (DAG) was used to evaluate the statistical relationship between variables. The Cox regression method was performed to identify potential prognostic factors associated with mortality. The poly3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) hole transport layer (HTL) has always played a crucial role in achieving high-efficiency organic solar cells (OSCs) owing to its unique advantages of suitable energy levels and high optical transparency. However, the inherent insulation and easy aggregation property of PSS results in relatively low conductivity and high surface roughness of the PEDOT:PSS film, which is unfavorable for charge transport and the morphology of the top layer. To address these problems, we use PEDOT:PSS diluted in a series of alcoholic solvents and evaluate them on the PM6:Y6 system. Among these, the PM6:Y6 devices using PEDOT:PSS modified with ethanol as the HTL demonstrate the best vertical phase segregation and carrier extraction. In addition, the PEDOT:PSS film with added ethanol also has the smoothest surface compared to those diluted in the other alcoholic solvents. Finally, a high power conversion efficiency of 18.13% was obtained with the PM6:Y6 devices based on PEDOT:PSS modified by ethanol. This work provides a sufficient reference for the alcoholic modification of PEDOT:PSS and also proposes a feasible solution for high-efficiency OSCs.

Piezoelectric energy harvesting faces a primary challenge in effectively capturing low-orbit vibration energy across a broad frequency range. In this paper, we present a tri-stable piezoelectric energy harvester that incorporates a dynamic amplifier (TPEH + DM), specifically designed for efficient collection of low-orbit vibration energy. The TPEH + DM comprises a piezoelectric cantilever beam connected to an innovative dynamic amplifier at its restrained end, which enhances both the rotational and lateral displacement of the piezoelectric cantilever beam simultaneously. The governing coupled differential equations of motion for the system is derived based on the Lagrange equation, and analytical expressions for its steady-state response are obtained using the multi-scale method. The influence of factors such as the mass and the stiffness ratio of the dynamic amplifier on the steady-state dynamic output characteristics of the system is investigated using the theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. The results indicate that TPEH + DM exhibits significantly improved energy harvesting performance compared to TPEH under low-orbit external excitations. The bandwidth of inter-well motion and the TPEH + DM power output may be further increased by suitably modifying the relative stiffness between the cantilever beam and the dynamic amplifier. In addition, we analyze the time-domain behavior of the system’s output voltage using the ode45 solver under various external excitation frequencies and intensities. The results demonstrate that with appropriate adjustments to the mass of the tip magnet and the stiffness ratio of the dynamic amplifier, the proposed TPEH + DM system can harvest energy efficiently across a broad frequency range, even under low-orbit excitations.

Abstract High‐performance organic neuromorphic devices with miniaturized device size and computing capability are essential elements for developing brain‐inspired humanoid intelligence technique. However, due to the structural inhomogeneity of most organic materials, downscaling of such devices to nanoscale and their high‐density integration into compact matrices with reliable device performance remain challenging at the moment. Herein, based on the design of a semicrystalline polymer PBFCL10 with ordered structure to regulate dense and uniform formation of conductive nanofilaments, we realize an organic synapse with the smallest device dimension of 50 nm and highest integration size of 1 Kb reported thus far. The as‐fabricated PBFCL10 synapses can switch between 32 conductance states linearly with a high cycle‐to‐cycle uniformity of 98.89% and device‐to‐device uniformity of 99.71%, which are the best results of organic devices. A mixed-signal neuromorphic hardware system based on the organic neuromatrix and FPGA controller is implemented to execute spiking‐plasticity‐related algorithm for decision-making tasks.

Abstract Background The decline in the quantity and quality of mitochondria are closely associated with infertility, particularly in advanced maternal age. Transferring autologous mitochondria into the oocytes of infertile females represents an innovative and viable strategy for treating infertility, with no concerns regarding ethical considerations. As the donor cells of mitochondria, stem cells have biological advantages but research and evidence in this area are quite scarce. Methods To screen out suitable human autologous ooplasmic mitochondrial donor cells, we performed comprehensive assessment of mitochondrial physiology, function and metabolic capacity on a varity of autologous adipose, marrow, and urine-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (ADSC, BMSC and USC) and ovarian germline granulosa cells (GC). Further, to explore the biosafety, effect and mechanism of stem cell-derived mitochondria transfer on human early embryo development, randomized in-vitro basic studies were performed in both of the young and aged oocytes from infertile females. Results Compared with other types of mesenchymal stromal cells, USC demonstrated a non-fused spherical mitochondrial morphology and low oxidative stress status which resembled the oocyte stage. Moreover, USC mitochondrial content, activity and function were all higher than other cell types and less affected by age, and it also exhibited a biphasic metabolic pattern similar to the pre-implantation stage of embryonic development. After the biosafety identification of the USC mitochondrial genome, early embryos after USC mitochondrial transfer showed improvements in mitochondrial content, activity, and cytoplasmic Ca2+ levels. Further, aging embryos also showed improvements in embryonic morphological indicators, euploidy rates, and oxidative stress status. Conclusion Autologous non-invasively derived USC mitochondria transfer may be an effective strategy to improve embryonic development and metabolism, especially in infertile females with advanced age or repeated pregnancy failure. It provides evidence and possibility for the autologous treatment of infertile females without invasive and ethical concerns.

Abstract Background Previous studies have traditionally attributed the initiation of cancer cells to genetic mutations, considering them as the fundamental drivers of carcinogenesis. However, recent research has shed light on the crucial role of epigenomic alterations in various cell types present within the tumor microenvironment, suggesting their potential contribution to tumor formation and progression. Despite these significant findings, the progress in understanding the epigenetic mechanisms regulating tumor heterogeneity has been impeded over the past few years due to the lack of appropriate technical tools and methodologies. Results The emergence of single-cell sequencing has enhanced our understanding of the epigenetic mechanisms governing tumor heterogeneity by revealing the distinct epigenetic layers of individual cells (chromatin accessibility, DNA/RNA methylation, histone modifications, nucleosome localization) and the diverse omics (transcriptomics, genomics, multi-omics) at the single-cell level. These technologies provide us with new insights into the molecular basis of intratumoral heterogeneity and help uncover key molecular events and driving mechanisms in tumor development. Conclusion This paper provides a comprehensive review of the emerging analytical and experimental approaches of single-cell sequencing in various omics, focusing specifically on epigenomics. These approaches have the potential to capture and integrate multiple dimensions of individual cancer cells, thereby revealing tumor heterogeneity and epigenetic features. Additionally, this paper outlines the future trends of these technologies and their current technical limitations.

As the most abundant group of mammals, rodents possess a very rich ecotype, which makes them ideal for studying the relationship between diet and host gut microecology. Zokors are specialized herbivorous rodents adapted to living underground. Unlike more generalized herbivorous rodents, they feed on the underground parts of grassland plants. There are two species of the genus Myospalax in the Eurasian steppes in China: one is Myospalax psilurus, which inhabits meadow grasslands and forest edge areas, and the other is M. aspalax, which inhabits typical grassland areas. How are the dietary choices of the two species adapted to long-term subterranean life, and what is the relationship of this diet with gut microbes? Are there unique indicator genera for their gut microbial communities? Relevant factors, such as the ability of both species to degrade cellulose, are not yet clear. In this study, we analyzed the gut bacterial communities and diet compositions of two species of zokors using 16S amplicon technology combined with macro-barcoding technology. We found that the diversity of gut microbial bacterial communities in M. psilurus was significantly higher than that in M. aspalax, and that the two species of zokors possessed different gut bacterial indicator genera. Differences in the feeding habits of the two species of zokors stem from food composition rather than diversity. Based on the results of Mantel analyses, the gut bacterial community of M. aspalax showed a significant positive correlation with the creeping-rooted type food, and there was a complementary relationship between the axis root-type-food- and the rhizome-type-food-dominated (containing bulb types and tuberous root types) food groups. Functional prediction based on KEGG found that M. psilurus possessed a stronger degradation ability in the same cellulose degradation pathway. Neutral modeling results show that the gut flora of the M. psilurus has a wider ecological niche compared to that of the M. aspalax. This provides a new perspective for understanding how rodents living underground in grassland areas respond to changes in food conditions.

This study presents a novel design for a tri-stable piezoelectric vibration energy harvester with an asymmetric structure, which is enhanced with an elastic base (TPVEH + EB), meticulously designed to enhance energy extraction from irregular vibrations in architectural structures. The cornerstone of this design is the asymmetric tri-stable piezoelectric cantilever beam, distinctively arranged within a U-shaped block and fortified with an elastic foundation. A carefully positioned spring (kf)-mass (Mf) system between the U-shaped block and the beam’s fixed end significantly boosts the vertical displacement of the beam during oscillations. Utilizing Lagrange’s equations, we formulated a dynamic model for the asymmetric TPVEH + EB, examining the effects of potential well asymmetry, the stiffness of the elastic base and spring-mass system, the mass of the spring-mass system, and the tip magnet mass on the system’s nonlinear dynamic responses. Our results demonstrate that the asymmetric TPVEH + EB significantly enhances energy harvesting from low-amplitude random vibrations (1.5 g), with the output voltage of the asymmetric TPVEH + EB increasing by 30% and the output power by 25%. Extensive numerical and theoretical analyses verify that the asymmetric TPVEH + EB provides a highly efficient solution for scenarios typically hindered by low energy conversion rates. Its reliable performance under varied and unpredictable excitation conditions highlights its excellence in advanced energy harvesting applications. The improvements detailed in this research underscore the potential of the asymmetric TPVEH + EB to boost energy harvesting efficiency, particularly in powering wireless sensor nodes for structural health monitoring in buildings. By overcoming the limitations of traditional harvesters, the asymmetric TPVEH + EB ensures enhanced efficiency and reliability, making it an ideal solution for a wide range of practical applications in diverse environmental conditions within buildings.

IntroductionIn the field of education, new technologies have enhanced the objectivity and scientificity of educational evaluation. However, concerns have been raised about the fairness of evaluators, such as artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms. This study aimed to assess college students’ perceptions of fairness in educational evaluation scenarios through three studies using experimental vignettes.MethodsThree studies were conducted involving 172 participants in Study 1, 149 in Study 2, and 145 in Study 3. Different evaluation contexts were used in each study to assess the influence of evaluators on students’ perception of fairness. Information transparency and explanations for evaluation outcomes were also examined as potential moderators.ResultsStudy 1 found that different evaluators could significantly influence the perception of fairness under three evaluation contexts. Students perceived AI algorithms as fairer evaluators than teachers. Study 2 revealed that information transparency was a mediator, indicating that students perceived higher fairness with AI algorithms due to increased transparency compared with teachers. Study 3 revealed that the explanation of evaluation outcomes moderated the effect of evaluator on students’ perception of fairness. Specifically, when provided with explanations for evaluation results, the effect of evaluator on students’ perception of fairness was lessened.DiscussionThis study emphasizes the importance of information transparency and comprehensive explanations in the evaluation process, which is more crucial than solely focusing on the type of evaluators. It also draws attention to potential risks like algorithmic hegemony and advocates for ethical considerations, including privacy regulations, in integrating new technologies into educational evaluation systems. Overall, this study provides valuable theoretical insights and practical guidance for conducting fairer educational evaluations in the era of new technologies.

This paper presents the design of a novel hybrid tri-stable piezoelectric energy harvester (HTPEH) that improves the energy harvesting efficiency of piezoelectric energy harvesters operating at low frequencies. The proposed HTPEH is an extension of a conventional tri-stable cantilever piezoelectric energy harvester with an elastic base (TPEH + EB), and it incorporates vertical and rotational elastic amplifiers that are installed between the mass block at the left end of a cantilever beam and the left side of a U-shaped frame to enhance the system's nonlinear characteristics. By utilizing Hamilton's principle, a HTPEH's nonlinear electromechanical equation is formulated, and the harmonic balance method is used to obtain analytical solutions for the displacement amplitude, voltage amplitude, and power amplitude. The study investigates the effects of various parameters, including the elastic amplifier-to-base stiffness ratio and elastic amplifier-to-piezoelectric cantilever beam mass ratio on the energy harvesting performance of the HTPEH. The results indicate that the displacement and voltage amplitude of the HTPEH exhibit two peaks as the external excitation frequency increases, and adjusting the relative mass and stiffness between the elastic amplifier and the piezoelectric cantilever beam can alter the frequency band interval where the two response peaks of the system are located. This allows the HTPEH to enter inter-well motion at low-level external excitation, resulting in high output power. The HTPEH outperforms the TPEH + EB in terms of energy harvesting efficiency under low-frequency environmental excitation.

The configuration of beam–column joints in precast concrete (PC) building structures varies widely, and different connection methods significantly affect the progressive collapse resistance of the structure. This study investigates the progressive collapse resistance of an innovative beam–column connection node frame. Finite element models of four-story, two-span space frame structures made of reinforced concrete (RC) and PC were developed using ANSYS 14.0/LS-DYNA R5.x software, employing nonlinear dynamic and static analysis to examine structural collapse behavior under bottom middle or corner column damage. Numerical results indicate that following the failure of the middle or corner column due to explosion loading, the vertical displacement and collapse rate of the PC structure with the novel connection method are less than those of the RC structure during collapse progression. Furthermore, upon removal of the middle or corner column, the residual load-carrying capacity of the PC structure with the innovative connection increased by 7% and 3.7%, respectively, compared to the RC structure. This suggests that PC structures with this type of connection demonstrate superior performance in resisting progressive collapse, offering valuable insights for future engineering applications.

This paper proposes an asymmetric hybrid tri-stable piezoelectric energy harvester for rotational motion (RHTPEH). The device features an asymmetric tri-stable piezoelectric cantilever beam positioned at the edge of a rotating disk. This beam is uniquely configured with an asymmetric arrangement of magnets. Additionally, an elastic amplifier composed of a vertical and a rotating spring connects the beam’s fixed end and the disk. This setup enhances both the rotational amplitude and vertical displacement of the beam during motion. A comprehensive dynamical model of the RHTPEH was developed using Lagrange’s equations. This model facilitated an in-depth analysis of the system’s behavior under various conditions, focusing on the influence of key parameters such as the asymmetry in the potential well, the stiffness ratio of the amplifier springs, the radius of the disk, and the disk’s rotational speed on the nonlinear dynamic response of the system. The results show that the asymmetric hybrid tri-stable piezoelectric energy harvester makes it easier to harvest the vibration energy in rotational motion and has excellent power output performance compared with the symmetric tri-stable piezoelectric energy harvester. The output power magnitude of the system at higher rotational speeds increases as the radius of rotation expands, but when the rotational speed is low, the steady-state output power magnitude of the system is not sensitive to changes in the radius of rotation. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations validate the effectiveness of the proposed asymmetric RHTPEH for energy harvesting in low-frequency rotating environments.

Parkinson’s disease (PD), as a neurologically implemented disease with complex etiological factors, has a complex and variable pathogenesis. Accompanying further research, neuroinflammation has been found to be one of the possible factors in its pathogenesis. Microglia, as intrinsic immune cells in the brain, play an important role in maintaining microenvironmental homeostasis in the brain. However, over-activation of neurotoxic microglia in PD promotes neuroinflammation, which further increases dopaminergic (DA) neuronal damage and exacerbates the disease process. Therefore, targeting and regulating the functional state of microglia is expected to be a potential avenue for PD treatment. In addition, plant extracts have shown great potential in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders due to their abundant resources, mild effects, and the presence of multiple active ingredients. However, it is worth noting that some natural products have certain toxic side effects, so it is necessary to pay attention to distinguish medicinal ingredients and usage and dosage when using to avoid aggravating the progression of diseases. In this review, the roles of microglia with different functional states in PD and the related pathways inducing microglia to transform into neuroprotective states are described. At the same time, it is discussed that abscisic acid (ABA) may regulate the polarization of microglia by targeting them, promote their transformation into neuroprotective state, reduce the neuroinflammatory response in PD, and provide a new idea for the treatment of PD and the selection of drugs.

Abstract Background The regularity of the menstrual cycle directly affects women’s health. Many studies have focused on menstrual health; however, menstrual cycle regularity-related variations in skin physiological characteristics and skin microbiota have been seldom investigated. Methods To investigate the menstrual cycle regularity-related variations in skin physiological characteristics and skin microbiota of 197 cases of Chinese women aged 18–35 years living in shanghai in 2021. Based on a self-evaluation questionnaire, the volunteers were divided into three groups C1 (those with a regular menstrual cycle), C2 (those with a less regular menstrual cycle) and C3 (those with an irregular menstrual cycle). The physiological parameters of facial skin were measured by non-invasive methods and the skin microbiome was analyzed by 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing. Abstract Studying the real-time face expression state of teachers in class was important to build an objective classroom teaching evaluation system based on AI. However, the face-to-face communication in classroom conditions was a real-time process that operated on a millisecond time scale. Therefore, in order to quickly and accurately predict teachers’ facial expressions in real time, this paper proposed an improved YOLOv5 network, which introduced the attention mechanisms into the Backbone model of YOLOv5. In experiments, we investigated the effects of different attention mechanisms on YOLOv5 by adding different attention mechanisms after each CBS module in the CSP1_X structure of the Backbone part, respectively. At the same time, the attention mechanisms were incorporated at different locations of the Focus, CBS, and SPP modules of YOLOv5, respectively, to study the effects of the attention mechanism on different modules. The results showed that the network in which the coordinate attentions were incorporated after each CBS module in the CSP1_X structure obtained the detection time of 25 ms and the accuracy of 77.1% which increased by 3.5% compared with YOLOv5. It outperformed other networks, including Faster-RCNN, R-FCN, ResNext-101, DETR, Swin-Transformer, YOLOv3, and YOLOX. Finally, the real-time teachers’ facial expression recognition system was designed to detect and analyze the teachers’ facial expression distribution with time through camera and the teaching video.

Abstract Many previous studies have documented the relationship between the North Pacific Oscillation (NPO) and the weather/climate of upstream and downstream regions. However, the stability of NPO precursor signals of East Asian summer precipitation, which is important for climate prediction, has received little attention. This study identified temporal variations in the connection between the May NPO and subsequent midsummer precipitation over Northeast China (NEC) during 1961–2020. During 1986–2010, the correlation between the May NPO and midsummer precipitation over NEC was found significantly positive, whereas the relation was found statistically insignificant during 1961–1985/2011–2020. Further results indicated that the NPO stimulated a Rossby wave source over the North Pacific that was stronger during 1986–2010 than during 1961–1985/2011–2020. The Rossby wave source anomalies shifted to North America and to the North Atlantic during the subsequent June and midsummer, respectively. Consequently, a teleconnection wave train, which originated over the North Pacific, propagated eastward to North America, across the North Atlantic, and on to East Asia on the subseasonal time scale, influencing midsummer precipitation over NEC through modulation of the atmospheric circulation (e.g., horizontal wind, moisture transport, and vertical movement). Moreover, the intensified Rossby wave anomalies associated with the May NPO were attributed to the strengthened NPO, which could be related to the enhanced standard deviation of SLP over the North Pacific. Additionally, the strengthened out‐of‐phase relation between the NPO and the North Atlantic Oscillation, resulting from changes in the background circulation, partially contributed to intensification of the Rossby wave train.

IntroductionLicorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch.) is a widely recognized significant form of medicine in China, with a long-standing history and extensive usage. It is considered the oldest and most prevalent herbal medicine in China. Currently, the licorice market is confronted with the primary challenges of mixed genotypes, inconsistent quality, and inadequate glycyrrhizic acid content.MethodsWe conducted field experiments to investigate the impact of various cultivation locations on the growth characteristics, active ingredients, rhizospheric soil physicochemical properties and fungal communities of licorice that ten different genotypes.ResultsThe findings indicated significant variations in these parameters across ten different genotypes of licorice originating from two distinct production regions. The growth characteristics of licorice were primarily influenced by genotype, whereas the active ingredients of licorice were mainly influenced by environmental factors and soil physicochemical properties. Furthermore, the rhizospheric soil physicochemical properties of licorice plants were more influenced by environmental factors than genotypes. Additionally, the distribution of rhizospheric soil fungi in licorice plants of the same genotype exhibited significant variations across different cultivation areas. The utilization of structural equation model synthesis reveals variations in the quantity and strength of pathways that influence the growth characteristics, active ingredients, and rhizospheric soil microbial community of licorice across different cultivation regions.DiscussionBased on the main results, according to its growth characteristics and active ingredients, Z009 proved to be the most suitable genotype for cultivation in Jingtai. From a perspective centered on the active ingredient, Z010 proved to be the most optimal genotype for licorice cultivation in both production areas. Our study aims to enhance the understanding of the ecological adaptability of various genotypes of licorice resources and to identify appropriate licorice genotypes for specific cultivation regions. This research holds significant practical implications for enhancing the yield and quality of licorice, thereby improving its overall development.

PurposeThe study aimed to explore the role of adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) after breast-conserving surgery (BCS) in elder women with early-stage breast cancer (BC).MethodsBC patients with 70-79 years of age, stage T1‐2N0‐1M0, undergoing BCS were screened in the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database between 2010 and 2015. The clinicopathological characteristics were balanced with propensity-score matching (PSM) method. Kaplan–Meier curves and Cox regression analyses were performed to determine the impact of adjuvant RT on BC patients.ResultsUltimately, 12,310 patients treated with adjuvant RT and 4837 patients treated with no RT, were involved in the analysis. Overall, patients treated with adjuvant RT was associated with a better breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS) (HR: 1.980 [1.596- 2.456], P < 0.001) and overall survival (OS) (HR: 2.214 [1.966- 2.494], P < 0.001) than those who did not undergo RT. After 1:1 PSM, adjuvant RT still performed advantage in both BCSS (HR: 1.918 [1.439- 2.557], P < 0.001) and OS (HR: 2.235 [1.904- 2.624], P < 0.001). In the multivariate COX analysis of BCSS, widowed, divorced and separated patients, tumor grade III, T2 stage, N1 stage, no RT, molecular subtypes with luminal B and triple negative were associated with a shorter BCSS (P < 0.05). In the multivariate COX analysis of OS, age ≥74 years, widowed, divorced and separated patients, tumor grade II/III, T2 stage, no RT, no chemotherapy, molecular subtypes with triple negative were associated with a shorter OS (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the advantages of adjuvant RT were observed in all subgroup analysis.ConclusionAdjuvant RT after BCS can improve both BCSS and OS in elderly patients with early-stage BC. Additionally, all subgroups analysis-derived BCSS and OS were in support of RT.

Abstract Depth–spectral imaging (DSI) is an emerging technology which can obtain and reconstruct the spatial, spectral and depth information of a scene simultaneously. Conventionally, DSI system usually relies on scanning process, multi-sensors or compressed sensing framework to modulate and acquire the entire information. This paper proposes a novel snapshot DSI architecture based on image mapping and light field framework by using a single format detector. Specifically, we acquire the depth – spectral information in two steps. Firstly, an image mapper is utilized to slice and reflect the first image to different directions which is a spatial modulation processing. The modulated light wave is then dispersed by a direct vision prism. After re-collection, the sliced dispersed light wave is recorded by a light field sensor. Complimentary, we also propose a reconstruction strategy to recover the spatial depth – spectral hypercube effectively. We establish a mathematical model to describe the light wave distribution on every optical facet. Through simulations, we generate the aliasing raw spectral light field data. Under the reconstruction strategy, we design an algorithm to recover the hypercube accurately. Also, we make an analysis about the spatial and spectral resolution of the reconstructed data, the evaluation results conform the expectation.

Abstract In Parkinson's disease (PD), neurotoxic microglia, Th1 cells, and Th17 cells are overactivated. Overactivation of these immune cells exacerbates the disease process and leads to the pathological development of pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and contact-killing compounds, causing the loss of dopaminergic neurons. So far, we have mainly focused on the role of the specific class of immune cells in PD while neglecting the impact of interactions among immune cells on the disease. Therefore, this review demonstrates the reciprocal interplays between microglia and T cells and the associated subpopulations through cytokine and chemokine production that impair and/or protect the pathological process of PD. Furthermore, potential targets and models of PD neuroinflammation are highlighted to provide the new ideas/directions for future research.

Abstract Background Low vitamin D status has been associated with an increased risk for infertility. Recent evidence regarding the efficacy of vitamin D supplementation in improving reproductive outcomes is inconsistent. Therefore, this systematic review was conducted to investigate whether vitamin D supplementation could improve the reproductive outcomes of infertile patients and evaluate how the parameters of vitamin D supplementation affected the clinical pregnancy rate. Methods We searched seven electronic databases (CNKI, Cqvip, Wanfang, PubMed, Medline, Embase, and Cochrane Library) up to March 2022. Randomized and cohort studies were collected to assess the reproductive outcomes difference between the intervention (vitamin D) vs. the control (placebo or none). Mantel-Haenszel random effects models were used. Effects were reported as odds ratio (OR) and their 95% confidence interval (CI). PROSPERO database registration number: CRD42022304018. Results Twelve eligible studies (n = 2352) were included: 9 randomized controlled trials (RCTs, n = 1677) and 3 cohort studies (n = 675). Pooled results indicated that infertile women treated with vitamin D had a significantly increased clinical pregnancy rate compared with the control group (OR: 1.70, 95% CI: 1.24–2.34; I 2 = 63%, P = 0.001). However, the implantation, biochemical pregnancy, miscarriage, and multiple pregnancy rates had no significant difference (OR: 1.86, 95% CI: 1.00–3.47; I 2 = 85%, P = 0.05; OR: 1.49; 0.98–2.26; I 2 = 63%, P = 0.06; OR: 0.98, 95% CI: 0.63–1.53; I 2 = 0%, P = 0.94 and OR: 3.64, 95% CI: 0.58–11.98; I 2 = 68%, P = 0.21). Background Infertility is recognized as a common and worrisome problem of human reproduction worldwide. Based on previous studies, male factors account for about half of all infertility cases. Exposure to environmental toxicants is an important contributor to male infertility. Bisphenol A (BPA) is the most prominent toxic environmental contaminant worldwide affecting the male reproductive system. BPA can impair the function of the Golgi apparatus which is important in spermatogenesis. GGA1 is known as Golgi-localized, gamma adaptin ear-containing, ARF-binding protein 1. Previously, it has been shown that GGA1 is associated with spermatogenesis in Drosophila, however, its function in mammalian spermatogenesis remains unclear. Methods Gga1 knockout mice were generated using the CRISPR/Cas9 system. Gga1-/- male mice and wild-type littermates received intraperitoneal (i.p.) injections of BPA (40 µg/kg) once daily for 2 weeks. Histological and immunofluorescence staining were performed to analyze the phenotypes of these mice. Results Male mice lacking Gga1 had normal fertility without any obvious defects in spermatogenesis, sperm count and sperm morphology. Gga1 ablation led to infertility in male mice exposed to BPA, along with a significant reduction in sperm count, sperm motility and the percentage of normal sperm. Histological analysis of the seminiferous epithelium showed that spermatogenesis was severely disorganized, while apoptotic germ cells were significantly increased in the Gga1 null mice exposed to BPA. Our findings suggest that Gga1 protects spermatogenesis against damage induced by environmental pollutants.

BackgroundMinimal change disease (MCD) is one of the most common primary glomerular disorders with high serum IgE levels. This study was aimed to investigate the clinical features of different serum IgE levels in pediatric MCD and evaluate the prognostic significance of serum IgE levels with regard to remission and relapse in pediatric cohort.MethodsThis study enrolled 142 new-onset children diagnosed with biopsy-proven MCD from January 2010 to December 2021 at the Jinling Hospital in Nanjing, China. These cases were divided into three groups according to serum IgE levels. MCD patients’ demographics, clinical parameters, and follow-up data were collected and analyzed. The primary and secondary outcomes were defined as the time to the first complete remission (CR) and the first relapse.ResultsThe results manifested that 85.2% (121/142) of MCD children had high serum IgE levels (IgE > 90.0 IU/ml). A total of 142 patients were divided into the normal-, low-, and high-IgE groups based on the normal reference value level (90.0 IU/ml) and median serum IgE level (597.5 IU/ml). The high-IgE group had a significantly lower cumulative rate of the first CR (log-rank, P = 0.032) and a higher rate of the first relapse (log-rank, P = 0.033) than the normal-IgE and low-IgE groups. Multivariate Cox analysis showed that IgE ≥597.5 IU/ml was independently associated with the delayed first CR [hazard ratio (HR) = 0.566, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.330–0.972, P = 0.039] and the early first relapse (HR = 2.767, 95% CI = 1.150–6.660, P = 0.023).ConclusionsSerum IgE levels were an independent correlation factor for pediatric MCD-delayed remissions and early relapses.

Abstract Background ‘Taikong blue’ lavender, a space-bred cultivar of Lavandula angustifolia, is one of the main lavender essential oil production crops in Xinjiang Province, China. Several cases of local usage indicated that ‘Taikong blue’ lavender essential oil (TLEO) had excellent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties for skin problems. However, to date, substantial data on these functions are lacking. In this study, we aimed to investigate the composition and bioactivities of TLEO and the potential underlying mechanisms through LPS-induced inflammatory models of HaCaT and RAW264.7 cells. Methods The composition of TLEO was determined by GC‒MS. To study the anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties of TLEO, we induced HaCaT and RAW264.7 cells by LPS. TLEO (0.001%-0.1%, v/v) was used to treat inflamed cells with dexamethasone (DEX, 10 μg/mL) as the standard drug. A variety of tests were carried out, including biochemical assays, ELISA, RT‒PCR, and western blotting. Docking of components was performed to predict potential ligands. Results The GC‒MS analysis revealed that 53 compounds (> 0.01%) represented 99.76% of the TLEO, and the majority of them were esters. TLEO not only reduced the levels of oxidative stress indicators (NO, ROS, MDA, and iNOS at the mRNA and protein levels) but also protected the SOD and CAT activities. According to the RT‒PCR, ELISA, and Western blot results, TLEO decreased inflammation by inhibiting the expression of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and key proteins (IκBα, NF-кB p65, p50, JNK, and p38 MAPK) in MAPK-NF-кB signaling. Molecular docking results showed that all of the components (> 1% in TLEO) were potent candidate ligands for further research. Conclusion The theoretical evidence for TLEO in this study supported its use in skin care as a functional ingredient for cosmetics and pharmaceutics. Graphical Abstract

Abstract The Kmeans clustering algorithm is widely used for the advantages of simplicity and efficient operation. However, the lack of clustering centers in the algorithm usually causes incorrect category of some discrete points. Therefore, in order to obtain more accurate clustering results when studying the factors affecting the professional growth of outstanding teachers, this paper proposes an improved algorithm of Kmeans combined with DBSCAN. Observing the clustering results of the influencing factors and calculating the evaluation standard values of the clustering results, it is found that the optimized DB-Kmeans algorithm has obvious improvements in the accuracy of the clustering results, and the clustering effect of the algorithm on edge points is more advantageous than the original algorithms according to the scatter diagram.

In order to establish a rapid method for detecting the content of nitrite in food, green carbon quantum dots (CQDs) originating from chicken paw skin were synthesized by the one-step hydrothermal method. The morphology, structure and optical properties of CQDs were characterized systematically by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and fluorescence spectroscopy (FS) technologies. The prepared CQDs were distributed uniformly with a regular size, and the surface of the CQDs was rich in functional groups including hydroxyl, carboxyl, and carbonyl, et al. In addition, the CQDs emitted intense blue fluorescence under the excitation of a 365 nm UV light lamp. And the excitation spectrum and emission spectrum of CQDs were narrow and symmetrical, indicating CQDs had good luminescence properties. In the presence of Fe3+, the fluorescence of CQDs was quenched due to the formation of coordination bonds between Fe3+ and the oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of CQDs. Based on that, a simple fluorescent probe was designed to detect indirectly nitrite (NO2−) by CQDs for nitrite possesses strong oxidation in acidic solution and was capable to transform iron (II) into iron (III) ions. The parameters including the excitation wavelength of CQDs, buffer pH value and reaction time were studied. Under the optimized conditions, the fluorescence quenching intensity of CQDs-Fe2+ fluorescent probe increased linearly with the NO2− concentration in the range of 1~500 μmol/L (R2=0.9979) with a low detection limit of 0.61 μmol/L, and the probe had a good anti-interference ability. The method was applied to the determination of NO2− in three marinate meat and satisfactory recoveries of 98.61%~100.95% and consistent data compared with ion chromatography were obtained. The results indicated that the CQDs-Fe2+ fluorescent probe could be used for the detection of NO2− in real samples. In summary, the fluorescent probe constructed based on the carbon dots of the biological matrix is green and safe, simple to prepare, can detect the content of nitrite in cured meat products, indicating a good practical application prospect.

Mariculture of bivalves (e.g., mussels, scallops, and oysters) is developing rapidly in coastal waters. This process releases shell debris that can accumulate on the seabed under farms. The ecological consequences of shell accumulation on the bioturbation of benthic macrofauna, which play a key role in the biogeochemical processes of sediment, are not yet fully understood. Thus, it is necessary to quantify the shell debris that accumulated under bivalves farms and evaluate whether the shell debris hinders the burrowing capacity of macrofauna. Oysters are common bivalve species cultured worldwide. However, no data are available on shell accumulation due to oyster farming and its possible effects on the burrowing capacity of polychaetes. Thus, we conducted a preliminary study on shells debris accumulation under an oyster farm in Daya Bay, southern China, and assessed the effects of shell accumulation on the burrowing activity of the polychaete Perinereis aibuhitensis in a mesocosm experiment for 32 days. The results showed that oyster farming significantly (p < 0.05) increased the accumulation of shell debris under the farm. The amount of shell debris under oyster farm (6.0 ± 1.3 kg (dry weight (DW)) m-2 or 130.0 ± 24.7 g (DW) kg-1 dry sediment) was approximately two times that in a non-culture area (3.5 ± 0.9 kg (DW) m-2 or 74.9 ± 10.5 g (DW) kg-1 dry sediment). The presence of shell debris did not affect the survival of P. aibuhitensis in experiment, but the animals in sediment with shell added exhibited greater losses of body weight compared with those without, indicating that the presence of shell causes animals to expend more energy in burrowing. The numbers of burrowing holes were lower in sediment with shell debris added compared with those in sediment without shell addition throughout the experiment. Whereas, this does not due to the P. aibuhitensis in +Shell treatment were less active in terms of their burrowing activities. The lower numbers of holes in +Shell treatment was mainly due to P. aibuhitensis were unable to use surface areas where shells were present, the amount of area occupied by shell material physically prevented P. aibuhitensis from forming burrows in these locations. The hindering effects of shells on the burrowing activity of P. aibuhitensis would decrease as the shells degraded into debris. Therefore, we recommend using small shells when conducting “shell addition” bioremediation strategies to avoid the possible negative effects of shells on burrowing by polychaetes.

PurposeTo explore the potential of perivascular fat attenuation index (FAI) and coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) derived fractional flow reserve (CT-FFR) in the identification of culprit lesion leading to subsequent acute coronary syndrome (ACS).MethodsThirty patients with documented ACS event who underwent invasive coronary angiography (ICA) from February 2019 to February 2021 and had received CCTA in the previous 6 months were collected retrospectively. 40 patients with stable angina pectoris (SAP) were matched as control group according to sex, age and risk factors. The study population has a mean age of 59.3 ± 12.3 years, with a male prevalence of 81.4%. Haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (haplo-HSCT), as one of the life-saving treatments for severe aplastic anemia (SAA), is widely used because of its great donor availability. Over decades, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF)/antithymocyte globulin (ATG)-based protocol (the so-called Beijing Protocol) has achieved favorable engraftment and survival outcomes. In this study, we modified the conventional Beijing Protocol: the full-dose Cyclophosphamide (Cy) (200 mg/kg in total) was divided into 42.75 mg/kg Cy on day -5 to day -2 and Low dose post-transplant Cy (PTCy) (14.5 mg/kg on days +3 and +4), hoping to reduce the incidence of severe acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) and to guarantee successful and stable engraftment. Here we retrospectively reported and analyzed the data of first 17 patients with SAA who had received haplo-HSCT using this novel regimen between August 2020 and August 2022. The median follow-up was 522 days (range, 138-859 days). No patient developed primary graft failure. Four (23.5%) patients developed grade II bladder toxicity, two (11.8%) patients developed grade II cardiotoxicity. All patients achieved neutrophil and platelet engraftment at median times of 12 days (range, 11–20 days) and14 days (range, 8-36 days). During our follow-up, no patients developed grade III-IV aGVHD. The cumulative incidence of grade II and grade I aGVHD at 100 days was 23.5% (95% CI, 6.8%-49.9%) and 47.1% (95% CI, 23.0%-72.2%). Three patients (17.6%) developed chronic GVHD of skin, mouth, and eyes and all of which were mild. All patients are alive by the end of the follow-up, with a failure-free survival of 100%, which was defined as survival without treatment failures, such as death, graft failure, or relapse rate. The rate of cytomegalovirus (CMV) reactivation was 82.4% (95% CI, 64.3%-100%). The rate of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) reactivation was 17.6% (95% CI, 3.8%-43.4%). No CMV disease and post-transplantation lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) occurred among these patients. In conclusion, the encouraging results of prolonged survival outcomes and reduced incidence of GVHD suggest promising effect of this novel regimen in haplo-HSCT for patients with SAA. Larger-sample prospective clinical trials are needed to confirm the effectiveness of this regimen.

IntroductionSalvia miltiorrhiza Bunge is an important medicinal herb, which is widely cultivated in most parts of China. It has attracted considerable attention because of its pharmacological properties and potential health benefits.MethodsWe used a field experiment to determine the effects of different genotypes and climatic factors on the performance (plant biomass, morphological parameters), active ingredients, rhizosphere soil physicochemical properties and microbial composition of S. miltiorrhiza at five cultivation locations.ResultsThe results showed that these parameters were significantly different in the six different genotypes of S. miltiorrhiza from five producing areas. Genotype and soil physicochemical properties were the main factors affecting the growth traits of S. miltiorrhiza, while genotype, climate and soil physicochemical properties were the main factors affecting the content of active components of S. miltiorrhiza. Microbial phospholipid fatty acid analysis showed that the biomass of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria was affected by the genotypes of S. miltiorrhiza plants, while the biomass of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, fungi, Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria was affected by climate factors.DiscussionBased on the main results, DS993 was the most suitable genotype for S. miltiorrhiza in the five producing areas from the perspective of comprehensive growth traits and medicinal components, while DS993 and DS2000 were suitable for planting in Shandong province from the perspective of origin. DS996 is not suitable for all of the above production areas. These results are helpful to understand the ecological adaptability of different genotypes of S. miltiorrhiza resources, and to select appropriate S. miltiorrhiza genotypes for specific planting areas, so as to maximize yield and quality.

Microalgae blooms are a frequent occurrence in coastal waters worldwide. It is reasonable to assume that these blooms have various influences on bacterial communities, which in turn may affect the development and dissipation of the bloom. However, the bacterial community characteristics, particularly of attached bacteria, associated with microalgae blooms remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the community profiles of bacteria using high-throughput sequencing during a Phaeocystis globosa bloom in Mirs Bay, southern China, in January 2021. Bacteria living in three habitats, i.e., bacterioplankton, particle-attached bacteria, and colony-attached bacteria, were studied from the exponential growth phase to the decline growth phase of the bloom. Distinct variations in bacterial community composition existed among the three habitats. Bacteroidota, Proteobacteria, and Cyanobacteria were the dominant phyla of bacterioplankton, particle–attached bacteria, and colony-attached bacteria, respectively. Richness and diversity were significantly highest (p < 0.01) in particle-attached bacteria, followed by bacterioplankton, and lowest in colony-attached bacteria. The community diversities of bacterioplankton and particle-attached bacteria decreased significantly (p < 0.05) as the bloom shifted from the exponential to the decline phase. During the decline growth phase of the bloom, Bacteroidota and Verrucomicrobiota were the dominant remarkably abundant bacteria in the bacterioplankton community, whereas Verrucomicrobiota was dominant in the particle-attached bacteria community. No significant difference was observed in the colony-attached bacterial community between the exponential and decline phases of the P. globosa bloom owing to their complex network. The results of this study suggest that P. globose bloom has a profound impact on marine bacteria, particularly species that can decompose organic matter, which could play a crucial role in the dissipation of algal blooms.

In Drosophila, the endoplasmic reticulum-associated protein degradation (ERAD) is engaged in regulating pleiotropic biological processes, with regard to retinal degeneration, intestinal homeostasis, and organismal development. The extent to which it functions in controlling the fly innate immune defense, however, remains largely unknown. Here, we show that blockade of the ERAD in fat bodies antagonizes the Toll but not the IMD innate immune defense in Drosophila. Genetic approaches further suggest a functional role of Me31B in the ERAD-mediated fly innate immunity. Moreover, we provide evidence that silence of Xbp1 other than PERK or Atf6 partially rescues the immune defects by the dysregulated ERAD in fat bodies. Collectively, our study uncovers an essential function of the ERAD in mediating the Toll innate immune reaction in Drosophila.

To design more environmentally friendly, economical, and efficient demulsifiers for oily wastewater treatment, hydrophobic octadecylphosphonic acid (ODPA)-modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles (referred to as Fe3O4@ODPA) were prepared by condensation of hydroxyl groups between ODPA and Fe3O4 nanoparticles using the co-precipitation method. The prepared magnetite nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric/differential thermogravimetric (TG/DTG) analysis. The water contact angles (θW) of Fe3O4@ODPA nanoparticles were more than 120°, indicating hydrophobic nature, and the diameter of the obtained spherical-shaped magnetite nanoparticles was 12–15 nm. The ODPA coating amount (AO) (coating weight per gram Fe3O4) and specific surface area (SO) of Fe3O4@ODPA were 0.124–0.144 g·g−1 and 78.65–91.01 m2·g−1, respectively. To evaluate the demulsification ability, stability, and reusability, the magnetite nanoparticles were used to demulsify an n-hexane-in-water nanoemulsion. The effects of the magnetite nanoparticle dosage (CS), pH value of nanoemulsion, and NaCl or CaCl2 electrolytes on the demulsification efficiency (RO) were investigated. The RO of Fe3O4@ODPA samples was found to be higher than that of bare Fe3O4 samples (S0, ST, and SN) under all CS values. With the increase in CS, the RO of Fe3O4@ODPA samples initially increased and then approached equilibrium value at Cs = 80.0 g·L−1. A maximum RO of ~93% was achieved at CS = 100.0 g·L−1 for the Fe3O4@ODPA sample S2. The pH and two electrolytes had a minor effect on RO. The Fe3O4@ODPA nanoparticles maintained high RO even after being reused for demulsification 11 times. This indicates that the hydrophobic Fe3O4@ODPA samples can be used as an effective magnetite demulsifer for oil-in-water nanoemulsions.

Biomedical image registration refers to aligning corresponding anatomical structures among different images, which is critical to many tasks, such as brain atlas building, tumor growth monitoring, and image fusion-based medical diagnosis. However, high-throughput biomedical image registration remains challenging due to inherent variations in the intensity, texture, and anatomy resulting from different imaging modalities, different sample preparation methods, or different developmental stages of the imaged subject. Recently, Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) have attracted increasing interest in both mono- and cross-modal biomedical image registrations due to their special ability to eliminate the modal variance and their adversarial training strategy. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of the GAN-based mono- and cross-modal biomedical image registration methods. According to the different implementation strategies, we organize the GAN-based mono- and cross-modal biomedical image registration methods into four categories: modality translation, symmetric learning, adversarial strategies, and joint training. The key concepts, the main contributions, and the advantages and disadvantages of the different strategies are summarized and discussed. Finally, we analyze the statistics of all the cited works from different points of view and reveal future trends for GAN-based biomedical image registration studies.

BackgroundSkeletal muscle mass (SMM) plays an important part in diverse health and disease states. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and computed tomography (CT) are available for its assessment. However, muscle mass assessed by BIA may be influenced by multiple factors. The erector spinae muscle area (ESA) on chest CT is recently presumed to be representative of SMM. This study aimed to derive BIA from the ESA and evaluate the magnitude of association (between ESA measured from chest CT) and BIA.MethodsSubjects hospitalized for health checkups between December 2020 and December 2021, having undergone both BIA (50 kHz, 0.8 mA) and chest CT, were included. ESA was quantified at the level of the 12th thoracic vertebra (T12-ESA) by a standardized semi-automated segmentation algorithm. Low SMM was defined using the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia criteria. The association between T12-ESA and BIA was then evaluated. Stratified analyses by sex and BMI were also performed.ResultsAmong 606 included subjects (59.7 ± 16.6 years, 63.5% male), 110 (18.2%) had low SMM. BMI in low and normal SMM groups was 20.1 and 24.7 kg/m2, respectively. Current smoking, drinking, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and chronic renal dysfunction were more frequently seen in the low SMM group than in the normal SMM group. The final regression model included T12-ESA, weight, BMI, and age, and had an adjusted R2 of 0.806 with BIA. In the validation group, the correlation between T12-ESA-derived BIA and BIA remained high (Pearson correlation = 0.899). Stratified analysis disclosed a stronger correlation between T12-ESA and BIA in male subjects than in female subjects (adjusted R2 = 0.790 vs. adjusted R2 = 0.711, p < 0.05), and a better correlation was observed in obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) compared with underweight (BMI < 18.5 kg/m2) subjects (adjusted R2 = 0.852 vs. adjusted R2 = 0.723, p < 0.05). Additional analysis revealed a significant correlation between T12-ESA and skeletal muscle cross-sectional area at the 3rd lumbar vertebra (L3-CSA) (adjusted R2 = 0.935, p < 0.001).ConclusionsCT-based assessment of ESA at the T12 level is feasible and correlated well with BIA, especially in male subjects and obese subjects.

Radiation-induced brain injury is a serious complication with complex pathogenesis that may accompany radiotherapy of head and neck tumors. Although studies have shown that calcium (Ca2+) signaling may be involved in the occurrence and development of radiation-induced brain injury, the underlying molecular mechanisms are not well understood. In this study, we used real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting assays to verify our previous finding using next-generation sequencing that the mRNA and protein expression levels of Orai3 in rat brain microvascular endothelial cells (rBMECs) increased after X-ray irradiation. We next explored the role of Orai3 and Orai3-mediated store-operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE) in radiation-induced brain injury. Primary cultured rBMECs derived from wild-type and Orai3 knockout (Orai3(−/−)) Sprague–Dawley rats were used for in vitro experiments. Orai3-mediated SOCE was significantly increased in rBMECs after X-ray irradiation. However, X-ray irradiation-induced SOCE increase was markedly reduced in Orai3 knockout rBMECs, and the percentage of BTP2 (a nonselective inhibitor of Orai channels)-inhibited SOCE was significantly decreased in Orai3 knockout rBMECs. Functional studies indicated that X-ray irradiation decreased rBMEC proliferation, migration, and tube formation (a model for assessing angiogenesis) but increased rBMEC apoptosis, all of which were ameliorated by BTP2. In addition, occurrences of all four functional deficits were suppressed in X-ray irradiation-exposed rBMECs derived from Orai3(−/−) rats. Cerebrovascular damage caused by whole-brain X-ray irradiation was much less in Orai3(−/−) rats than in wild-type rats. These findings provide evidence that Orai3-mediated SOCE plays an important role in radiation-induced rBMEC damage and brain injury and suggest that Orai3 may warrant development as a potential therapeutic target for reducing or preventing radiation-induced brain injury.

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have attracted great attention as an advanced power source and energy-storage device for years due to their high energy densities. With rapid growing demands for large reversible capacity, high safety, and long-period stability of LIBs, more explorations have been focused on the development of high-performance cathode materials in recent decades. Carbon-based materials are one of the most promising cathode modification materials for LIBs due to their high electrical conductivity, large surface area, and structural mechanical stability. This feature review systematically outlines the significant advances of carbon-based materials for LIBs. The commonly used synthetic methods and recent research advances of cathode materials with carbon coatings are first represented. Then, the recent achievements and challenges of carbon-based materials in LiCoO2, LiNixCoyAl1-x-yO2, and LiFePO4 cathode materials are summarized. In addition, the influence of different carbon-based nanostructures, including CNT-based networks and graphene-based architectures, on the performance of cathode materials is also discussed. Finally, we summarize the challenges and perspectives of carbon-based materials on the cathode material design for LIBs.

In the current study, we explored the effects of dark septate endophytes (DSE) (Neocamarosporium phragmitis, Alternaria chlamydospore, and Microascus alveolaris) on the performance and rhizosphere soil microbial composition of Lycium ruthenicum Murr under drought stress. Differences in plant growth and physiological indexes, soil parameters, and microbial composition under different treatments were studied. Three DSE species could form good symbiotic relationships with L. ruthenicum plants, and the symbionts depended on DSE species and water availability. Inoculation of DSE had the greatest benefit on host plants under drought conditions. In particular, N. phragmitis and A. chlamydospore had a significant positive influence on the biomass, morphological and physiological indexes of host plants. Additionally, the content of arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) fungi, gram-negative bacteria, and actinomycetes in the soil was significantly elevated after DSE inoculation in the absence of water. Based on a variance decomposition analysis, DSE was the most important factor affecting the growth and physiological parameters of host plants, and DSE inoculation combined with water conditions significantly affected the contents of soil microbial communities. Structural equation model (SEM) analysis showed that the positive effects of DSE on L. ruthenicum varied with DSE species and plant parameters under different water conditions. These results are helpful to understand the ecological function of DSE and its potential application in the cultivation of L. ruthenicum plants in drylands.

Studies have indicated that the skeletal muscle mass and strength was related to serum uric acid (UA), but there is a lack of research on the association of skeletal muscle fat content with UA. The purpose of this cross-sectional study is to investigate the correlation of skeletal muscle fat index (SMFI) and hyperuricemia (HUA) in Chinese adults. 500 subjects (306 men and 194 women) were included in the study. The participants were divided into four groups according to SMFI quartiles. Pearson’s correlations between SMFI and metabolic variables were calculated. Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the association between the quartiles of SMFI and risk of hyperuricemia. An outbreak of a macrozooplankton Creseis acicula occurred in the summer of 2020 nearby the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant located on the coast of the Daya Bay in the South China Sea. The outbreaks of C. acicula often threaten human health, the marine environment, and other human activities including the safe operation of coastal nuclear power plants. Seawater temperature has been suggested as an important factor influencing such outbreaks. However, the underlying mechanisms through which temperature influences C. acicula remains unknown. Here, we studied the effects of temperature on the ingestion and assimilation of algal food by feeding radiocarbon-labeled algae Chlorella sp. at simulated field temperatures (19–31 °C) to C. acicula collected during the outbreak in the Daya Bay. We also quantified the allocation of the food carbon to dissolved organic carbon (DOC), CO2, and fecal pellets. The results showed that the zooplankton during the same feeding time ingested doubled or tripled algal food at higher temperatures, and it produced and released significantly more DOC, CO2, and fecal pellets with more ingested food carbon. Meanwhile, the assimilation efficiency for the ingested food carbon slightly increased from 48% to 54% with rising temperature. As a result, higher assimilation rates indicating faster growth of C. acicula were observed at higher temperatures. In addition, the high activation energy of 0.908 eV indicated that the assimilation rate was very sensitive to temperature rising. Our results show that relatively rising temperature can enhance C. acicula’s ingestion and assimilation rates for algal food, benefit its growth and metabolism, and contribute to its outbreak. This study provides a mechanistic interpretation for the relationship between rising temperature and the outbreaks of C. acicula and suggests that such outbreaks may occur more frequently and widely in the warming ocean.

A coulometric signal readout method, which was originally developed for solid-contact ion-selective electrodes, was investigated in this work using LiMn2O4 (LMO) as a combined ion-recognition and signal-transduction layer. The redox process of LMO, which is associated with reversible intercalation/expulsion of Li+ ions, allowed coulometric sensing of Li+ ions in aqueous solutions. On increasing the active area (mass loading) of LMO, the coulometric signal increased for a given change in Li+ ion activity. The excellent redox reversibility of LMO and its relatively low resistance were instrumental in achieving a high signal amplification together with a relatively fast response. Coating the LMO layer with a conventional Li+-selective plasticized PVC membrane was found to dramatically lower the coulometric response. Hence, the application of LMO as a combined Li+-selective electrode material and ion-to-electron transducer was found to be highly compatible with the coulometric signal readout method, especially for detecting small Li+ activity changes at high Li+ concentrations.

Secondary poor graft function (sPGF) increases the risk of life-threatening complications after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The incidence, clinical outcomes, and risk factors of sPGF have not been elucidated in haploidentical (haplo-) HSCT for acquired aplastic anemia (AA) patients. We retrospectively reviewed 423 consecutive AA patients who underwent haplo-HSCT between January 2006 and December 2020 and report a 3-year cumulative incidence of 4.62% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.92%-10.23%) of sPGF. While no primary PGF occurred. The median time to sPGF was 121 days (range 30-626 days) after transplantation. To clarify the risk factors for sPGF, 17 sPGF cases and 382 without PGF were further analyzed. Compared to patients without PGF, the 2-year overall survival was significantly poorer for sPGF patients (67.7% vs 90.8%, p =.002). Twelve sPGF patients were alive until the last follow-up, and 7 achieved transfusion independency. The multivariable analyses revealed that later neutrophil engraftment (OR 2.819, p=.049) and a history of refractory cytomegalovirus viremia (OR=7.038, p=.002) post-transplantation were associated with sPGF. There was weak evidence that a history of grade 3-4 acute graft-versus-host disease increased the risk of sPGF (p=.063). We advocated better post-transplantation strategies to balance the risk of immunosuppression and viral reactivation for haplo-HSCT in AA patients.
