O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o comportamento do antígeno carcinoembrionário (CEA) em cadelas com carcinoma mamário metastático e não metastático para uso futuro na monitorização e prognóstico de pacientes oncológicos. Amostras de soro sanguíneo de 77 cadelas foram divididas em três grupos, G1 (n = 21), grupo controle (cadelas sadias / livres de neoplasias); G2 (n = 43), cadelas com carcinoma mamário não metastático e G3 (n = 13), cadelas com carcinoma de mama e metástase linfonodal. O marcador foi dosado uma única vez em G1, enquanto nos grupos G2 e G3, os níveis de CEA foram determinados antes (M0) e 15 dias após (M1) mastectomia, usando o kit ELISA para humanos e a leitura utilizou o ELISYS UNO humano. Os resultados para concentração de marcadores em amostras de soro sanguíneo nos dois tempos avaliados e a relação com o comportamento biológico da neoplasia e as alterações clínico-patológicas observadas foram avaliados pelo teste de Tukey a 5% de significância. Os valores de CEA aumentaram significativamente em cadelas com carcinoma de mama, tumores metastáticos maiores que 3,0 cm de diâmetro e alto grau em relação aos saudáveis. In view of the fact that cancer is considered a chronic disease that can interfere with hormonal homeostasis by means of cytokines, we hypothesized that, even at early stages, mammary carcinoma is able to alter the balance of the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axes. To test this hypothesis, the serum concentrations of basal cortisol, thyroxine (T4), free thyroxine (fT4), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) were evaluated in 20 unspayed bitches that had a histopathological diagnosis of grade 1 mammary carcinoma at clinical stage I according to the World Health Organization (WHO) classification (T1N0M0). The control animals comprised 10 unspayed bitches in perfect health conditions that were matched with those with mammary carcinoma by age. No significant differences regarding the concentrations of basal cortisol, TSH, t4, and fT4 were found between the bitches carrying early stage mammary carcinoma when compared to the control group. This suggests that, even if malignant, early-stage mammary carcinomas do not exhibit the ability to alter the concentrations of hormones produced by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal or hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axes. RESUMO: Em vista do fato de neoplasias serem consideradas doenças crônicas que por meio de citocinas podem interferir na homeostase hormonal, hipotetizou-se que o carcinoma mamário, mesmo nos seus estádios iniciais, fosse capaz de alterar o equilíbrio dos eixos hipotalâmico-hipofisário-tireóideo e hipotalâmico-hipofisário-adrenal. Para tal, foram avaliadas as concentrações séricas de cortisol basal, tiroxina (T4), tiroxina livre (fT4) e tireotrofina (TSH) de 20 fêmeas caninas, inteiras, com diagnóstico histopatológico de carcinoma mamário grau 1 e estadiamento clínico I segundo a classificação da Organização Mundial da Saúde - OMS (T1N0M0). Os animais controle constituíram-se por 10 fêmeas caninas inteiras, em perfeitas condições de higidez, as quais foram pareadas, por idade, com aquelas portadoras de carcinoma mamário. Não foram encontradas diferenças significativas nas concentrações de cortisol basal, TSH, T4 e fT4 das cadelas portadoras de carcinoma mamário em estádio inicial quando comparadas às controles sugerindo que, mesmo considerados malignos, ainda não apresentam a capacidade de alterar as concentrações dos hormônios produzidos pelos eixos hipotalâmico-hipofisário-adrenal e tireóideo.

Lymphoma is the most common lymphoproliferative disorder in cats. Cutaneous lymphoma, however, is a rare form of extranodal lymphoma. Recently, several cutaneous lymphomas at the tarsal region have been reported in cats. As it differs clinically and histopathologically from the common cutaneous lymphoma, it was denominated cutaneous tarsal lymphoma. The present study describes the case of a 13-year-old male domestic longhair cat that presented with a subcutaneous mass, of 30-days evolution, at the tarsal region of the right pelvic limb. Histopathology analysis showed malignant neoplasia of round cells, morphologically suggestive of large cell lymphoma. Immunohistochemistry confirmed the diagnosis of B-immunoblastic lymphoma. Patient was treated with lomustine, and prednisolone with an overall survival time of 2.1 months. The aggressiveness of this feline lymphoma reinforces the need for further studies to understand better the disease progression and to establish improved therapeutic protocols that can increase survival time and improve quality of life of these patients. RESUMEN El linfoma representa la enfermedad linfoproliferativa más frecuente en gatos. Sin embargo, el linfoma cutáneo es una rara forma de linfoma extranodal. Recientemente, el linfoma cutáneo se reportó localizado en el tarso. Tanto clínica como histopatológicamente, esta forma difiere de la forma cutánea típica, y se denominó linfoma tarsal felino. Este estudio describe el caso de un gato, doméstico de pelo largo, 13 años de edad con una masa subcutánea, de 30 días de evolución en la región tarsal del miembro pélvico derecho. La histopatologia reveló neoplasia de células redondas, sugestiva de linfoma de células grandes. La inmunohistoquímica confirmó el diagnóstico de linfoma imunoblástico de células B. El tratamiento realizado fue lomustina y prednisolona con tiempo de sobrevida de 2,1 meses. La agresividad de este linfoma, refuerza la necesidad de estudios para entender su curso y mejorar protocolos terapéuticos que incrementen tanto la sobrevida como la calidad de vida para estos pacientes.

Cutaneous food allergy is an adverse immunological response, triggered by antigenic dietary components that may escape the digestion process and are absorbed intact through the gastrointestinal mucosa. In Brazil, there are only a few reports on cutaneous food allergy and antigenicity of food components used in pet food production. Thus, the aim of this report was to assess and describe data from medical records of canine patients diagnosed with cutaneous food allergy at a Veterinary Teaching Hospital from Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil, in order to evaluate epidemiological and clinical aspects related to this skin problem. From 2007 to 2012, 29 dogs received the diagnosis of cutaneous food allergy after an eight-week hypoallergenic elimination trial. Among them, purebred dogs were more frequent, as well as females, and their mean age was 50.4 months old. Pruritus was reported in all cases, especially in interdigital areas. In order to establish the diagnosis, most patients received home-cooked elimination diet, based on potato and lamb in approximately 80% of the cases. Besides, it was highlighted the importance of the hypoallergenic elimination diet being rigorously followed by dogs' owners, aiming the adequate control of the clinical signs related to cutaneous food allergy. A dermatite trofoalérgica é uma resposta imunológica adversa, desencadeada por componentes dietéticos antigênicos, que escapam do processo de digestão e são absorvidos intactos pela mucosa gastrointestinal. No Brasil, há poucos relatos acerca da dermatite trofoalérgica e da antigenicidade dos componentes utilizados na produção de alimentos para animais. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar e relatar dados de prontuários de pacientes caninos diagnosticados com dermatite trofoalérgica em um Hospital Veterinário de Jaboticabal, SP, Brasil, a fim de analisar os aspectos epidemiológicos e clínicos relacionados a este problema de pele. De 2007 a 2012, 29 cães receberam o diagnóstico de dermatite trofoalérgica após oito semanas de dieta de eliminação hipoalergênica. Dentre eles, destacam-se os cães de raça definida e as fêmeas como mais frequentes, com idade média de 50,4 meses. Prurido foi a queixa relatada em todos os casos, especialmente na região interdigital. Para fins diagnósticos, a maioria dos animais recebeu dieta caseira de eliminação, a base de batata e carneiro em aproximadamente 80% dos casos. Ademais, destaca-se a importância de que a dieta de eliminação hipoalergênica seja criteriosamente seguida pelo proprietário, a fim de controlar adequadamente os sinais clínicos da dermatite trofoalérgica.

This is deformity has been reported in dogs and cats. Although the etiology of Pectus excavatum is unknown, several theories have been postulated as possible causes, such as the shortening of the central tendon of the diaphragm, abnormalities of intrauterine pressure, a congenital deficiency of cranial muscles of the diaphragm and deformity of the upper airways. Animals with Pectus excavatum may be asymptomatic or may present with clinical signs associated with both respiratory and cardiovascular functions abnormalities. Clinical manifestations include head tilt, falling, rolling, walking in small circles, nystagmus, horner's syndrome, facial nerve paralysis and tremor. Peripheral vestibular disorders are more routine than the central, being described as possible causes otitis media, congenital diseases, aminoglycoside ototoxicity and hypothyroidism. The hypothyroidism can promote polyneuropathy in dogs with cranial nerve involvement, megaesophagus and laryngeal paralysis. The present report aims to describe a case of Boxer dog, six years old, with peripheral vestibular syndrome and unilateral facial nerve palsy due to hypothyroidism. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2012-07-01 This study aimed to compare the glycemic values obtained with a glucometer with those determined by a colorimetric enzymatic assay in venous blood as well as to evaluate the possibility of using capillary blood samples of dogs with diabetes mellitus. A group with 30 diabetic dogs was formed and from each dog three blood samples were obtained for glycemic evaluations by different methods and blood collection sites. The mean glycemic values showed no significant difference between the different sites of blood collection and methods (P=0.90). Venous, pinna and carpal pad blood glucose showed excellent correlation with the colorimetric enzymatic assay (r=0.98; r=0.95 and r=0.96 respectively) and the obtained values fit properly the clinically acceptable intervals in the error grid analysis. The present study revealed that carpal pad, venous and pinna glucose measurements are clinically acceptable and this method is feasible for use in hospitalized diabetic dogs. The sample attainment of carpal pad proved to be effective and a viable alternative. Further work is necessary to assess the utility of this technique in a home environment. Los factores pronósticos son parámetros posibles de ser cuantificados en el momento del diagnóstico y sirven como predictores de sobrevida en el paciente. Por tal razón, en este estudio se buscó evaluar la sobrevida y los factores pronósticos de caninos con cetoacidosis diabética (CAD), que es considerada una emergencia médica caracterizada por alteraciones metabólicas extremas y de alta mortalidad. En 16 caninos con CAD se obtuvieron datos epidemiológicos (sexo, edad, raza y peso), signos clínicos, alteraciones observadas al examen físico, hemograma completo (incluyendo recuento de plaquetas), bioquímica sérica básica (glucosa, alanina aminotransferasa, fosfatasa alcalina, creatinina y úrea), urianálisis y tratamiento. Con base en los parámetros evaluados, azotemia, proteinuria, cilindruria, bacteriuria, leucocituria, reducción de la hemoglobina y de la densidad urinaria fueron considerados también como factores pronósticos negativos, asociados a la mortalidad de pacientes con CAD. Prognostic factors are possible parameters to be measured at the moment of the diagnosis and may be useful as predictors of patient’s survival. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the survival and prognostic factors of canines with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a medical emergency characterized by intense metabolic alterations and high mortality rate. Epidemiological data (sex, age, breed, and weight), clinical sings, alterations observed during the physical examination as well as complete blood count, basic serum biochemistry (glucose, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, creatinine, and urea), urinalysis and the treatment performed in 16 canines with ketoacidosis were obtained. Based on the parameters evaluated, azotemia, proteinuria, urinary casts, bacteriuria, leukocyturia, decrease of hemoglobin and urine specific gravity were also considered as negative prognostic factors, associated to patient mortality in patients with DKA

Canine ehrlichiosis is caused by the bacterium Ehrlichia canis and is characterized by a systemic febrile disease of unknown pathogenesis. This study evaluated the expression of cytokines TNF-α, IL-10, IFN-γ, in splenic cells and blood leukocytes during the acute phase of ehrlichiosis and after treatment with doxycycline hyclate in dogs experimentally infected with the E. canis Jaboticabal strain. The study results showed a significant expression of TNF-α 18 days post-inoculation, reducing by approximately 70% after treatment. There was a unique peak of expression of IL-10 and IFN-γ 18 and 30 days post-inoculation, respectively. This study suggests that TNF-α plays a role in the pathogenesis of the acute phase of canine ehrlichiosis and that treatment with doxycycline hyclate reduces the systemic effects of this cytokine, possibly by reducing or eliminating parasitemia. A erliquiose canina é causada pela bactéria Ehrlichia canis, que desencadeia no hospedeiro uma doença febril e sistêmica, de patogênese pouco conhecida. O presente estudo avaliou a expressão das citocinas TNF-α, IL-10, IFN-γ, em células esplênicas e em leucócitos sanguíneos, durante a fase aguda da erliquiose e após o tratamento com hiclato de doxiciclina, em cães experimentalmente infectados com a amostra E. canis Jaboticabal. Os resultados mostraram expressão significativa de TNF-α 18 dias após a inoculação, reduzindo aproximadante 70% após o tratamento. Houve um único pico de expressão de IL-10 e de IFN-γ entre 18 e 30 dias após a inoculação, respectivamente. Este estudo sugere que o TNF-α participa da patogenia da fase aguda da erliquiose canina, e que o tratamento com hiclato de doxiciclina reduz os efeitos sistêmicos dessa citocina, possivelmente por reduzir ou eliminar a parasitemia.
