Abstract

The low cost and compactness of transmit-array antennas (TAs) make them attractive for 5G backhaul links. However, the TA advantage is less obvious when considering the broadband operation requirement. Two main factors influence the bandwidth performance, namely: 1) the bandwidth of the unit cells, and 2) the number of 360° phase wrapping zones in the aperture, which are designed for a specific frequency. Herein, we overcome these limitations by using all-dielectric unit cells (inherently broadband) and by developing a general method to quantify and manage the intricate relation between antenna gain, bandwidth, and antenna height. Based on this framework we optimize, as an example, a TA design (focal distance, $\boldsymbol{F} = \text{63 mm}$ and aperture diameter $\boldsymbol{D} = \text{80 mm}$) to comply with typical gain specification for 5G backhaul links (>30 dBi) in the WiGiG band (from 57 to 66 GHz). The feed is a dedicated compact horn $(\text{8 }\times \text{5} \times \text{22 mm}^3)$ that provides a proper illumination of the aperture. Additive manufacturing is used to simplify the manufacturing process of the antenna. A very good agreement between simulations and experimental results is obtained, achieving good aperture efficiency for this type of antenna (42%), which rivals with existing solutions based on more expensive manufacturing techniques. Abstract

International audience; In this letter, we present a method to extract the scattering parameters of a microelectronic probe used to feed on-chip or in-package antennas at millimeter-wave frequencies. It is especially important to take into account these losses in the calibration procedure necessary for the extraction of the antenna gain. We are specifically demonstrating that these losses are positively or negatively impacted, depending on the impedance value of the input impedance of the antenna connected to the probe. Theory is detailed and examples are given to illustrate the importance of taking into account those losses with precision. From the S-parameters of the probe and the measurement of the reflection coefficient of the antenna, we can compute the gain from the measured realized gain. An accuracy improvement of 15% is shown for the gain of the presented antenna.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, we present the design and the measurement of two antennas realized on a 130nm CMOS process. They both radiate in the 60 GHz band and are dedicated to Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) applications. The antennas are manufactured within the frame of a multi-wafer project with several surrounding microelectronic circuits. The first antenna is an Inverted-F antenna (IFA). It has a maximum gain of -8 dBi and a -10 dB matching bandwidth of 20%. The second radiator is a meandered dipole. It has a maximum gain of -14 dBi and a -10 dB matching bandwidth of 10%. The challenging measurement of their reflection coefficient and their gain radiation pattern are presented. Simulated versus meas-ured curves are analyzed. We especially demonstrate the necessity to take into account the closest microelectronic circuits of the antennas for accurate modeling of the radi-ating performance of 60 GHz on-chip dies.

Abstract

International audience; This paper presents a design process and simulation results of a 5 x 1 linear antenna array with phase shifters for 60 GHz beam steering applications. The antenna array has been designed using a membrane process in order to achieve high radiation efficiency and good radiation characteristics. The same process can be used to manufacture Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) switches and phase shifters. The maximum gain of the developed antenna array is 9.0 dBi and the radiation efficiency is 87 %. The array consists of 5 equally spaced monopole antennas which each has a gain of 3.2 dBi. The reflection coefficient of the antenna elements is better than -13.5 dB at the desired frequency range from 57 to 64 GHz and the minimum isolation between the adjacent antenna elements is 10.4 dB. The phase shifter which is used for steering the beam of the antenna array has been implemented with MEMS switches and switched transmission lines. The phase shifter enables a phase shift from -80° to +80° by 20° steps. The losses of the phase shifters are less than 2 dB. The results reveal that the membrane technology is a good option for implementing beam steering antenna systems for 60 GHz communications applications.
