Abstract

Natural debris floods travel in straight and meandering courses. The flow behaviour greatly depends on the volume fractions of solid and fluid, as well as on their dynamic interactions with the channel geometry. For the quasi threedimensional simulations of flow dynamics and mass transport of these floods through meandering and straight channels, we employ a two-phase debris flow model to carry out simulations for debris floods within straight and sinegenerated meandering channels of different amplitudes. The results for different sinuous meandering paths are compared with that in the straight one in terms of phase velocity, downslope advection and dispersion, depths of the maxima, deposition of mass, position of front and rear parts of the solid and fluid phases, and also the flow dynamics out of the conduits. The results reveal the slowing of the flow and increase of momentary deposition of the mixture mass in the vicinity of the bends along with the increasing sinuosity. The numerical experiments are useful to better understand the dynamics of debris floods down meandering channels as seen in the natural paths of the rivers as well as already existing channels like episodic rivers in hilly regions. Abstract

We present a comparison of the measured cosmic ray (CR) muon fluxes from two identical portable low‐cost detectors at different geolocations and their sensitivity to space weather events in real time. The first detector is installed at Mount Wilson Observatory, CA, USA (geomagnetic cutoff rigidity Rc ∼ 4.88 GV), and the second detector is running on the downtown campus of Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA, USA (Rc ∼ 3.65 GV). The variation of the detected muon fluxes is compared to the changes in the interplanetary solar wind parameters at the L1 Lagrange point and geomagnetic indexes. In particular, we have investigated the muon flux behavior during three major interplanetary shock events and geomagnetic disturbances that occurred during July and August of 2022. To validate the interpretation of the measured muon signals, we compare the muon fluxes to the measurement from the Oulu neutron monitor (NM, Rc ∼ 0.8 GV). The results of this analysis show that the muon detector installed at Mount Wilson Observatory demonstrates a stronger correlation with a high‐latitude NM. Both detectors typically observe a muon flux decrease during the arrival of interplanetary shocks and geomagnetic storms. Interestingly, the decrease could be observed several hours before the onset of the first considered interplanetary shocks at L1 at 2022‐07‐23 02:28:00 UT driven by the high‐speed Coronal Mass Ejection and related geomagnetic storm at 2022‐07‐23 03:59:00 UT. This effort represents an initial step toward establishing a global network of portable low‐cost CR muon detectors for monitoring the sensitivity of muon flux changes to space and terrestrial weather parameters. Plain Language Summary: A pair of identical, low‐cost, and portable cosmic ray (CR) muon detectors is set up over 3,500 km apart for an exploratory study of monitoring space and terrestrial weather in real time at a global scale. One detector is installed on Mount Wilson, California and the other is in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. To validate the interpretation of the measured muon signals, the muon fluxes are compared to the well‐known neutron flux measurement from the Oulu neutron station in Finland. The results of this analysis show that the CR flux from both muon detectors typically decreases during geomagnetic storm events and that the muon detector installed on Mount Wilson is significantly correlated with the Oulu neutron monitor. Although this is yet an initial effort of building a global network of CR muon detectors for monitoring the space and earth weather in real time, the study provides evidence that muon network detection efficiency can be sufficient for a diagnostic of the major geoeffective space weather events. Abstract

A study of the wakefield excitation in a magnetized quantum plasma is presented. The high-density plasma has been magnetized through a magnetic field applied in the longitudinal direction. Using a recently developed quantum hydrodynamic model and a perturbative technique, taking into account the quantum effects of Fermi pressure and Bohm potential, electric and magnetic wakefields were obtained for the Gaussian profile of the electromagnetic pulse. Electrons are trapped in the wakefields and accelerated to extremely high energies. It is observed that the quantum effects significantly affect the wakefield excitation. Quantum dispersive effects tend to reduce the acceleration gradient, whereas the external magnetic field helps with self-focusing and also contributes to acceleration. Abstract

A correlative and comparative study has been carried out between the peak values of Geomagnetic Disturbance storm time (Dst) corresponding to Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF), and solar plasma parameters during solar cycles 22 and 23. For this purpose, we have identified 86 Geomagnetic Disturbance storm time index from -150nT to -589nT.This study has shown that the Bz component is a significant factor in the description of geomagnetic storms. A linear relationship has been established between Dst and corresponding to IMF and solar plasma parameters. Our study has suggested that geomagnetic storms only occur when the value of solar wind velocity exceeds ~350 km/sec. We have observed that the strong solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field were responsible for an intense geomagnetic storm. Moreover, the phase of IMF and Dst is strongly related during occurring of geomagnetic storms for solar cycles 22 and 23. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In the present study 212 specimens of wood decaying fungi were collected from Chhattisgarh, India, during survey in rainy season, 2009- 2010. These were identified, brought in pure culture by tissue culture method on Potato dextrose agar medium. Out of these, 33 species were screened and tested for cellulose degradation capability using filter paper cellulose. The ability of host fungus to utilize insoluble form of cellulose was measured. It was found that, all the 33 wood decaying fungi were able to decompose cellulose at varying degree. Biodegradation of cellulose and CAI were observed maximum with Navisporus floccosus whereas, Pyrofomes tricolor showing minimum biodegradation of cellulose and Flavodon flavus show minimum CAI. It is concluded that cellulose decomposition pattern was vary not only among the genera but also between the species of same genus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We evaluated important nontraditional cardiovascular risk factors, endothelial function and oxidative stress (OS) among stable peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Their association with carotid intimal medial thickness (CIMT) was also assessed. Thirty-eight adult patients (13 diabetics, 20 males) on PD for >6 months and 15 age and sex-matched controls were studied. Duration of dialysis (DOD), residual urine output (UO), weekly Kt/V urea, detailed biochemical and lipid profile were noted. OS was measured by serum concentration of antioxidants; vitamin C and ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) and pro-oxidant; thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS). High-resolution ultrasonography was used to determine CIMT and flow-mediated dilatation of brachial artery [endothelium-dependent dilatation (EDD)] and dilatation subsequent to nitrate spray [endothelium-independent dilatation (EID)]. Mean age, DOD, UO and Kt/V of study population were 49.3 ± 11.6 years, 19.4 ± 11.8 months, 508.2 ± 422.9 ml/day and 1.73 ± 0.24, respectively. As compared to controls PD patients had higher CIMT (0.46 ± 0.05 vs 0.50 ± 0.07 mm, P = 0.003) and TBARS (1.5 ± 0.4 vs 5.1 ± 2.3 nM/ml, P < 0.001) but lower Vitamin C (1.7 ± 0.3 vs 0.6 ± 0.2 mg%, P < 0.001), FRAP (990.8 ± 78.1 vs 328.7 ± 183.5 μM/L, P < 0.001) and EDD (26.2 ± 5.4 vs 9.8 ± 4.6 %, P < 0.001). TBARS correlated positively with DOD and negatively with hemoglobin. Vitamin C and FRAP correlated positively with serum albumin. EDD correlated positively with UO, Kt/V and hemoglobin. CIMT correlated negatively with Kt/V and hemoglobin. Among themselves CIMT correlated negatively with EDD and vitamin C. EDD correlated positively with vitamin C, while FRAP correlated positively with vitamin C and negatively with TBARS. PD patients have higher OS, poorer endothelial function and higher structural atherosclerosis. Abstract

The article offers information on several new records of wood decaying resupinate fungi as studied by Sagar and colleagues in Chhattisgarh, India. It says that Australohydnum dregeanum fungus, originated from South Korea, has fibrous rot with smooth hymenophore. It states that Hjortstamia friesii (Lév.) specie contains coarsely encrusted cystidia, and hyaline and found in tropical Asia. Moreover, Schizopora flavipora has cystidia and encrusted hyphoids that came from Sri Lanka.
