A political thought is an area of legitimate contribution of competitive ideas. Liberalism is often considered as one of the most significant and influential paradigm of our times. The common acceptance of liberal conception of negative liberty can be acknowledged as a proof of this tendency. At the same time clearly visible is the renaissance of republicanism and the conception of active participation in governance. The liberal and republican assumptions have similar roots but different social practices. The aim of this paper is to examine in contrast liberal and republican conceptions of freedom. The author discusses main categories of both political traditions: state, commonwealth, common good, citizen, individualism, law, limited power and freedom itself. The author attempts to compere republicanism and liberalism as the competitive political paradigms to show the dilemmas of modern states and societies where there is no common consensus referring to definition of liberty.

Summary: Background: Insulin resistance (IR) is an important risk factor for multiple chronic diseases, increasing mortality and reducing life expectancy. The associations between emerging surrogates for IR, triglyceride-glucose index (TyG) and TyG-related indicators, with all-cause mortality and life expectancy in middle-aged and older patients in primary care are unclear. Methods: This study originated from the Polish primary care cohort LIPIDOGRAM2015, including patients aged ≥45 years. Baseline fasting triglycerides and fasting glucose were used to derive TyG. Other TyG-related indicators included TyG-adjusted body mass index (TyG-BMI), TyG-adjusted waist circumference (TyG-WC), TyG-adjusted waist-to-hip, and TyG-adjusted waist-to-height. In this longitudinal analysis, we assessed associations between TyG-related indicators with total all-cause mortality, premature (age at death ≤75 years) all-cause mortality and years of life lost (YLL). Findings: We included 10,688 patients (mean age 61.8 ± 9.3 years; 63.5% female). Cumulative total and premature all-cause mortality were 7.2% and 4.6%, respectively, during 5.7 years (IQR 5.6–5.7) of follow-up. Lowest (Q1) and highest quartile (Q4) of TyG-BMI and TyG-WC were associated with total all-cause mortality (second quartile [Q2]: reference; TyG-BMI: Q1: aHR 1.33, 95% CI 1.07–1.65, Q4: aHR 1.28, 95% CI 1.03–1.58; TyG-WC: Q1: aHR 1.44, 95% CI 1.14–1.82, Q4: aHR 1.29, 95% CI 1.04–1.59), similar results for premature all-cause mortality. Within age 45–80 years, compared with Q2 and third quartile, YLL were 4.49 and 5.46 years for TyG-BMI Q1 and Q4, respectively, 3.24 and 5.31 years for TyG-WC Q1 and Q4, respectively. Interpretation: TyG-BMI and TyG-WC demonstrated a U-shaped association with total and premature all-cause mortality. Low and high levels of TyG-BMI and TyG-WC were associated with reduced life expectancy. Despite the relatively short follow-up period, significant associations were still observed, but longer follow-up studies are required to further explore these relationships. Consumers are increasingly seeking bakery products with better nutritional value and health benefits. The aim of the research was to assess the quality of bread made from ancient wheat flours (spelt, einkorn, emmer) with the addition of amaranth (Amaranthus cruentus L.), hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) and flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) seeds. The study evaluated bread made using only equal proportions of ancient wheat flours (Group I), and three variants of bread with the addition of amaranth, flax, and hemp seeds with the following proportions: Group II (10%, 5%, 5%, respectively), Group III (10%, 10%, 0%, respectively), Group IV (10%, 0%, 10%, respectively). The assessment of bread quality included: nutritional value (total protein, fat, fatty, amino acids, acid profile, ash, fiber, minerals), caloric value, physical characteristics (baking loss, color, shear force) and evaluation of organoleptic characteristics. It was demonstrated that bread enriched with amaranth, flax, and hemp seeds exhibited increased nutritional value (higher protein content with a favorable amino acid profile, higher fat content, including polyunsaturated fatty acids, and fiber), acceptable sensory attributes, but darker crust color and poorer crumb texture compared to bread without these additives. Among the examined groups, the highest protein and fat content with a favorable composition of fatty acids were observed in bread from Group IV. Group III bread had the highest hardness and fiber content and fiber content. On the other hand, bread from Group II received the best evaluation in terms of taste, aroma, as well as crust thickness.

Worldwide, burns are the fourth most frequent type of injury. The treatment of burn wounds requires a lot of experience and an interdisciplinary approach including both surgical treatment and pharmacological wound care. The most common management of burn wounds is debridement and wound closure through the use of skin grafts. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the hemostatic and antibacterial effects of the commercially available Tromboguard® foam dressing with an active layer containing alginates and chitosan. The site of application of the product was the donor fields for skin grafts. Findings proved that a polyurethane foam dressing with an active chitosan-alginate layer is a useful option for achieving rapid hemostasis, antimicrobial protection and effective healing at split-thickness skin graft donor sites. Substances present in the active layer promote clot formation and the wound healing process.

Agomelatine (AGM) is an effective antidepressant with low oral bioavailability due to intensive hepatic metabolism. Transdermal administration of agomelatine may increase its bioavailability and reduce the doses necessary for therapeutic effects. However, transdermal delivery requires crossing the stratum corneum barrier. For this purpose, the use of microneedles may increase the efficiency of administration. The aim of this study was to prepare an agomelatine-loaded hydrogel suitable for coating microneedles for the transdermal drug delivery of AGM. The optimized formulations were subjected to spectroscopic and rheological characterization and mechanical tests, as well as tested for release through an artificial membrane and permeation through human skin ex vivo. Both hydrogels were found to have suitable parameters for coating microneedles using the dip-coating method, including the stability of the substance at the process temperature, shear-thinning behavior, and appropriate textural parameters such as adhesion or hardness. Additionally, two formulations were tested for potential application to the skin alone because the gels showed suitable mechanical properties for the skin application. In this case, the ethanol gel was characterized by higher skin permeability and better spreadability. The information obtained in this study will allow the preparation of coated microneedles for the transdermal administration of agomelatine.

Background and Clinical Significance: Femoral neck fracture frequently occurs in the elderly population but may also present in patients diagnosed with primary cancer or bone metastases. A pathological, oligosymptomatic fracture associated with epithelioid haemangioendothelioma (EHE), a rare endothelial cell-derived sarcoma, is uncommon. Case Presentation: A 44-year-old patient underwent biopsy procedures three times (2010, 2012, 2013) for a focal lesion of the left ischium, none confirming its malignant nature. The last biopsy revealed a neoplastic tissue with features of discrete dysplasia. The lesion did not undergo medical follow-up for seven consecutive years. In August 2020, the patient presented with right lower limb pain. A CT scan, PET/CT scan, and biopsy confirmed EHE with spindle/sarcomatous features. In November 2020, chemotherapy (5xADIC) started (PET/CT confirmed a partial response). After its completion in July 2021, bone progression occurred and sirolimus-based therapy was started. After 3 months, a small liver metastasis was visualized on PET/CT, which did not result in the termination of treatment. In December 2021, pamidronate-based antiresorptive therapy was started. Liver metastasis remained stable in follow-up CT scans. Due to pelvic and spinal lesions, the patient was assisted by elbow crutches and underwent radiotherapy, remaining professionally active. The patient did not report any trauma, but in August 2023, a subsequent CT scan revealed a subcapital fracture of the left femoral neck in the fusion phase. Due to pelvic changes and the stable nature of the fracture, surgical treatment was abandoned. Conclusions: An oligosymptomatic femoral neck fracture, not requiring medical intervention is considered a rare complication of bone cancer.

Środowisko muzyczne wymaga od nauczyciela języka obcego podjęcia wielu działań wykraczających poza standardowe założenia metodyczne. Niekonwencjonalny sposób kształtowania procesu dydaktycznego w szkole o profilu artystycznym wynika przede wszystkim z podwyższonego poziomu wrażliwości uczestników zajęć oraz niestandardowych oczekiwań stawianych nauczycielom. Z kolei uczniowie preferujący indywidualny sposób organizacji nauki wykazują znaczące zainteresowanie metodą bezpośrednią, nastawiając się przy tym – wzorem zajęć muzycznych – na ćwiczenie poręcznych i użytecznych schematów.

Background: Endoscopic cysto-gastrostomy (ECG) has become the treatment of choice for pancreatic pseudocysts (PPCs). Endoscopic drainage of PPCs requires the creation of an anastomosis between the lumen of the PPCs and the lumen of the gastrointestinal tract. Various types of stents are used for this purpose. The aim of the study is to compare the indications, quantity, and results of using double pigtail plastic stents (DPPSs) and lumen-apposing fully covered metal stents (LAMSs) in ECG. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted of 39 patients (24 men, 15 women) treated for PPCs in the Department of Digestive Tract Surgery and the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology between October 2018 and February 2023. The mean age of patients was 51.13 (28–77). Data about etiology, cyst diameter, type, and complications of the stents were collected. Results: DPPSs were placed in smaller cysts (108 vs. 140 millimeters, p = 0.04) and were maintained for a longer duration compared to LAMSs (106 vs. 34 days, p = 0.001). Cyst recurrence was reported less frequently in patients with a LAMS (0 (0%) vs. 4 (19.05%), p = 0.05) and the therapeutic success was non-significantly higher in the LAMS group compared to the DPPS group (100% vs. 85.71%), p = 0.095. Conclusions: Both DPPSs and LAMSs are characterized by high therapeutic success and low complication rates in patients undergoing ECG for PPCs.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a key signaling molecule involved in numerous physiological and pathological processes within the human body. This review specifically examines the involvement of NO in age-related diseases, focusing on the cardiovascular, nervous, and immune systems. The discussion delves into the mechanisms of NO signaling in these diseases, emphasizing the post-translational modifications of involved proteins, such as S-nitrosation and nitration. The review also covers the dual nature of NO, highlighting both its protective and harmful effects, determined by concentration, location, and timing. Additionally, potential therapies that modulate NO signaling, including the use of NO donors and nitric oxide synthases (NOSs) inhibitors in the treatment of cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, and oncological diseases, are analyzed. Particular attention is paid to the methods for the determination of NO and its derivatives in the context of illness diagnosis and monitoring. The review underscores the complexity and dual role of NO in maintaining cellular balance and suggests areas for future research in developing new therapeutic strategies.

Abstract Arthroplasty is a common procedure improving functioning of patients and their quality of life. Infection is a serious complication that determines subsequent management of the prosthesis and the patient. The aim of the study was to investigate the incidence of post-discharge surgical site infections (SSI) and their risk factors. A retrospective analysis of an anonymized database from the National Health Found for 2017 of 56,068 adult patients undergoing hip replacement surgery (HPRO) and 27,457 patients undergoing knee replacement surgery (KPRO). The cumulative incidence of post-discharge SSI was 0.92% for HPRO and 0.95% for KPRO. The main risk factors for hip SSI were male gender, diseases of hematopoietic, musculoskeletal and nervous system. The risk factor for knee SSI was male gender. All comorbidities significantly increased the risk of SSI. The ICU stay and antibiotics administered at discharge in studied population increased the risk of detection of SSI after HPRO and KPRO by up to four and seven times, respectively. For both procedures rehabilitation after surgery and total endoprosthesis decreased incidence of SSIs. The lower experience of the center was related to higher SSI incidence in HPRO in primary (1.5% vs. 0.9%) and in revision surgeries (3.8% vs. 2.1%), but in KPRO, lower experience only in primary surgeries was significantly associated with SSI. The cumulative incidence of post-discharge SSI in Poland is higher than in other European countries. Special attention should be paid to patients with chronic diseases.

Introduction The number of reoperations increases with the growing number of operations performed. Material and methods The clinical material included a group of 2194 patients treated surgically due to degenerative disease of the lumbar spine; we selected a total of 332 patients who were reoperated, and the indications for reoperation were analysed. Results The percentage of patients operated due to adjacent segment disease in the group of patients with stabilization was on average 8.9%. Conclusions Indications for stabilizing or preservation of the mobility of the operated segment should provide for the nature of the lesions, and anatomical and surgical conditions.

After the first phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe, a new highly pathogenic variant of echovirus 11 (E11) was detected. The aim of this study was to analyze the genetic diversity of Polish E11 environmental and clinical strains circulating between 2017 and 2023 as well as compare them with E11 strains isolated from severe neonatal sepsis cases reported in Europe between 2022 and 2023. Additionally, the study explores the effectiveness of environmental monitoring in tracking the spread of new variants. For this purpose, the complete sequences of the VP1 capsid protein gene were determined for 266 E11 strains isolated in Poland from 2017 to 2023, and phylogenetic analysis was performed. In the years 2017–2023, a significant increase in the detection of E11 strains was observed in both environmental and clinical samples in Poland. The Polish E11 strains represented three different genotypes, C3, D5 and E, and were characterized by a high diversity. In Poland, the intensive circulation of the new variant E11, responsible for severe neonatal infections with a high mortality in Europe, was detected in the years 2022–2023. This investigation demonstrates the important role of environmental surveillance in the tracking of enteroviruses circulation, especially in settings with limited clinical surveillance.

SOUTHEAST ASIAN IMMIGRANTS IN TAIWANESE FOREIGN POLICY This article, through the analysis of the situation of permanent and labor immigrants in Taiwan, will try to show the different facets of Taiwanese foreign policy aimed at the Southeast Asian region. Announced by President Tsai Ingwen, the so-called New Southward Policy focuses on talent cultivation and industrial, commercial, cultural, educational and tourism exchanges. Its direct consequence is the exponentially increasing number of ASEAN nationals on the island, who come to Taiwan lured by the high standard of living and opportunities for high wages. From the perspective of the Taiwanese government, a special role is played by the second generation of immigrants from Southeast Asia, who are presented in popular discourse as the future of an island plagued by typical problems of developed countries such as low birth rates and gentrification.

Barley is an economically important plant cultivated primarily for animal feed and in the brewing industry for the production of barley malt. Climate changes and an increase in grain demand result in a constant need to improve the volume and stability of cereal species yields and better use the potential of cultivars. In cereal production, an important aspect is the use of microelements, especially by foliar spraying. Microelements, as components or enzyme activators, play a significant role in plant growth and metabolic processes occurring in the cell. As a consequence, their availability is a factor determining plant development. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of foliar fertilization with selected microelements on the yield of two-row malting barley cultivars. In 2019–2021, a two-factor field experiment with barley was conducted in south-eastern Poland. The experimental factors were three spring barley cultivars (Baryłka, KWS Irina, and RGT Planet) of the brewing type and four single-component micronutrient fertilizers containing copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), and zinc (Zn). The foliar application of microelements resulted in improvements in selected elements of the yield structure and an increase in grain yield, and the effect depended on the fertilization applied. The highest grain yield was obtained from plots where fertilizer with Mo or Zn was used. Barley plants sprayed with Mo fertilizer developed the longest spikes and were characterized by the highest number of productive tillers per plant. The foliar application of Zn resulted in the formation of the highest number of spikes per unit area and grain uniformity. The RGT Planet cultivar was characterized by higher values of the measured parameters compared to Baryłka and KWS Irina.

Plants are increasingly exposed to stress-induced factors, including heavy metals. Zinc, although it is a microelement, at high concentrations can be phytotoxic to plants by limiting their growth and development. The presented research confirmed the inhibition effect of Zn on morphological and physiological parameters in barley plants. However, the effect was Zn dose dependent (50 µM, 100 µM, and 200 µM), as well as part of the plants (above ground or roots). To mitigate the negative effects of Zn, plants were sprayed with 0.1% silicon. Silicon was proven to have a positive effect on mitigating the inhibitory effects of Zn-induced stress. In most cases, an increase in both morphological (length, elongation, fresh and dry weights, and weather content) and physiological (relative chlorophyll content and fluorescence) parameters was observed. This occurrence was dependent on the Zn dose. Epigenetic analyses confirmed differences in the DNA methylation level, both between plants subjected to stress at different strengths (50 µM, 100 µM, and 200 µM Zn) and between plants sprayed with Si or not. The differences indicate that silicon affects the epigenome of barley plants, thereby modifying the response of plants to stress factors. Soil salinity is considered a serious problem that limits agricultural productivity. Currently, solutions are being sought to mitigate the negative impact of salt on economically important crops. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of foliar application of silicon (Si) on the physiological and epigenetic responses of wheat grown under salt stress conditions. The experiment with wheat seedlings was established in pots with 200 mM NaCl added. After 7 days, foliar fertilizer (200 g L−1 SiO2) was used at concentrations of 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2%. Physiological parameters were measured three times. The addition of salt caused a significant decrease in the values of the measured parameters in plants of all variants. In plants sprayed with Si fertilizer under salinity conditions, a significant increase in CCI and selected gas exchange parameters (PN, Ci, E, gs) and chlorophyll fluorescence (PI, RC/ABS, FV/Fm, Fv/F0) was observed. Si doses of 0.1 and 0.2% showed a better mitigating effect compared to the dose of 0.05%. The observed effect was maintained over time. The results obtained indicate a positive role for foliar silicon fertilization in mitigating salinity stress in wheat. Epigenetic mechanisms play an important role in regulating gene expression in response to stress. Changes in the status of methylation of the 5′CCGG3′ sequence of the nuclear genome of wheat plants exposed to salinity and treated with Si at different doses were determined by the MSAP approach. The obtained results showed a clear alteration of DNA methylation in plants as a response to experimental factors. The methylation changes were silicon dose-dependent. These modifications may suggest a mechanism for plant adaptation under salt stress after silicon application. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Children make up a large percentage of those affected by burns worldwide, with most of them suffering from severe injuries that necessitate skilled medical attention. Despite medical progress, there is still no ideal dressing for the treatment of burn wounds in children. The aim of the study was to assess the impact of epidermal substitutes in the treatment of burn wounds in children. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study evaluates the use of three dressings in the treatment of pediatric burns at a major Polish burn center. A patient database was used to identify children who received treatment with silver dressings, paraffin dressings or epidermal substitutes from 2009 to 2023. A demographic analysis was performed to collect the following information: causes of burns, procedural details and patient outcomes. Results: There were 439 patients aged between 1 month and 18 years. For severe burns, the number of interventions was lowest among children with epidermal substitute application (p = 0.039). Paraffin gauze resulted in the greatest number of skin grafts, whereas alloplastic replacement produced the least amount of transplantation (p < 0.005) regardless of the severity of the burn. Conclusions: Epidermal substitutes offer a good dressing option for burn wounds to improve their treatment and reduce the need for skin graft coverage. In the future, extended comparative or randomized trials are needed to confirm our results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous research has established a possible link between recognition performance, individuation experience, and implicit racial bias of other-race faces. However, it remains unclear how implicit racial bias might influence other-race face processing in observers with relatively extensive experience with the other race. Here we examined how recognition of other-race faces might be modulated by observers' implicit racial bias, in addition to the effects of experience and face recognition ability. Caucasian participants in a culturally diverse city completed a memory task for Asian and Caucasian faces, an implicit association test, a questionnaire assessing experience with Asians and Caucasians, and a face recognition ability test. As expected, recognition performance for Asian faces was positively predicted by increased face recognition ability, and experience with Asians. More importantly, it was also negatively predicted by increased positive bias towards Asians, which was modulated by an interaction between face recognition ability and implicit bias, with the effect of implicit bias observed predominantly in observers with high face recognition ability. Moreover, the positions of the first two fixations when participants learned the other-race faces were affected by different factors, with the first fixation modulated by the effect of experience and the second fixation modulated by the interaction between implicit bias and face recognition ability. Taken together, these findings suggest the complexity in understanding the perceptual and socio-cognitive influences on the other-race effect, and that observers with high face recognition ability may more likely evaluate racial features involuntarily when recognizing other-race faces.
