The article presents information about the scientific research about Mars. Researcher Pereival Lowell, at his observatory in Arizona, over 7,000 feet in elevation, distinguished farther Martian features in 1894. Even more than in ordinary astronomical work, a distinguishing characteristic of the study of Mars visually is the fact that a trained eye can detect a wealth of detail, where one without preparatory experience sees, at first, only a brilliant planetary disk. Results chiefly photographic and not visual were planned and accomplished. The camera had special devices for taking a multitude of images on each plate, usually not less than fifty or sixty.

This article focuses on the mountain Pikes Peak in Colorado. Colorado Springs, a fair and sunny city reposing on the great plain at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, yet has itself an altitude nearly the same as the summit of Mount Washington. Many years ago fire swept over these mountain spaces, and miles of spruces now stand tall and gaunt, reaching ineffectual white fingers to the sky. Golden-rod of several kinds appeared above 10,000 feet elevation, greatly dwarfed, but lavishly bright and sunny.

The little town of Esashi, in Northern Hokaido, temporary raised into prominence by a total eclipse track which was fit to traverse its domains, has now returned to its normal quiet, echoes of the great world growing fainter in the distance as the various scientific expeditions retreat further from the Sea of Okhotsk towards more frequent regions. The Ainu, were however obscured by no clouds of any sort during the sojourn in their vicinity and very fine opportunities for studying the this interesting race were afforded.
