Abstract

Monolithic pixel detectors combine readout electronics and sensor in a single entity of silicon, which simplifies the production procedure and lowers the material budget compared to conventional hybrid pixel detector concepts. Benefiting from the advances in commercial CMOS processes towards large biasing voltage capabilities and the increasing availability of high-resistivity substrates, depleted monolithic active pixel sensors (DMAPS) are able to cope with the high-rate and high-radiation environments faced in modern high-energy physics experiments. TJ-Monopix2 is the latest iteration of a DMAPS development line designed in 180 nm TowerSemicondutor technology, which features a large scale (2 x 2) cm$^2$ chip divided into (512 x 512) pixels with a pitch of (33 x 33) um$^2$. All in-pixel electronics are separated from its small collection electrode and process modifications are implemented to improve charge collection efficiency especially after irradiation. Abstract

Silicon pixel sensors manufactured using commercial CMOS processes are promising instruments for high-energy particle physics experiments due to their high yield and proven radiation hardness. As one of the essential factors for the operation of detectors, the breakdown performance of pixel sensors constitutes the upper limit of the operating voltage. Six types of passive CMOS test structures were fabricated on high-resistivity wafers. Each of them features a combination of different inter-pixel designs and sets of floating guard rings, which differ from each other in the geometrical layout, implantation type, and overhang structure. A comparative study based on leakage current measurements in the sensor substrate of unirradiated samples was carried out to identify correlations between guard ring designs and breakdown voltages. TCAD simulations using the design parameters of the test structures were performed to discuss the observations and, together with the measurements, ultimately provide design features targeting higher breakdown voltages.

Abstract

Monolithic CMOS pixel detectors have emerged as competitive contenders in the field of high-energy particle physics detectors. By utilizing commercial processes they offer high-volume production of such detectors. A series of prototypes has been designed in a 180$\,$nm Tower process with depletion of the sensor material and a column-drain readout architecture. The latest iteration, TJ-Monopix2, features a large 2$\,$cm x 2$\,$cm matrix consisting of 512 x 512 pixels with 33.04$\,$um pitch. A small collection electrode design aims at low power consumption and low noise while the radiation tolerance for high-energy particle detector applications needs extra attention. With a goal to reach radiation tolerance to levels of $10^{15}\,1\,$MeV n$_\text{eq}\,$cm$^{-2}$ of NIEL damage a modification of the standard process has been implemented by adding a low-dosed n-type silicon implant across the pixel in order to allow for homogeneous depletion of the sensor volume. Abstract

Heteroepitaxy of functional thin films on single-crystal substrates is one of the most general themes in electronic materials research. Here, we propose an algorithm based on image processing for the rapid simulation of heteroepitaxial relationships. The superposition and rotation of various lattice plane images of the film and substrate, which were automatically generated from the crystal structure, rapidly verified all domain matching patterns. Furthermore, the comprehensive validation allowed us to discuss domain matching from multiple perspectives, such as mismatch, matching period, and density of matching lattice points. 27. The Problem behind the Problem: Applying Human-Centered Design to Child Care in Flint

Abstract

In response to the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, USA, early childhood education was one of the targets of intervention and prevention for children who were exposed to lead poisoning, because high-quality child care could potentially help improve their developmental trajectories. The Provider Empowerment Program used human-centered design (HCD) to uncover unmet and overlooked needs among child care providers. We discuss the theoretical framework that guided the project and led to a focus on family, friend, and neighbor (FFN) child care providers. We also present three examples of solutions that were uniquely shaped to meet the needs of FFN child care providers in Flint. Each solution was developed by a process that included taking the perspective of the people who faced the problem, spending time to understand the context of the problem, and uncovering the underlying problem which was not apparent at first. Recommendations for use of HCD in community-based problem-solving are discussed.

Abstract

Emotions are linked to wide sets of action tendencies, and it can be difficult to predict which specific action tendency will be motivated or indulged in response to individual experiences of emotion. Building on a functional perspective of emotion, we investigate whether anger and shame connect to different behavioral intentions in dignity, face, and honor cultures. Using simple animations that showed perpetrators taking resources from victims, we conducted two studies across eleven countries investigating the extent to which participants expected victims to feel anger and shame, how they thought victims should respond to such violations, and how expectations of emotions were affected by enacted behavior. Across cultures, anger was associated with desires to reclaim resources or alert others to the violation. In face and honor cultures, but not dignity cultures, shame was associated with the desire for aggressive retaliation. However, we found that when victims indulged motivationally-relevant behavior, expected anger and shame were reduced, and satisfaction increased, in similar ways across cultures. Results suggest similarities and differences in expectations of how emotions functionally elicit behavioral responses across cultures.

Abstract

LF-Monopix1 and TJ-Monopix1 are depleted monolithic active pixel sensors (DMAPS) in 150 nm LFoundry and 180 nm TowerJazz CMOS technologies respectively. They are designed for usage in high-rate and high-radiation environments such as the ATLAS Inner Tracker at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). Both chips are read out using a column-drain readout architecture. LF-Monopix1 follows a design with large charge collection electrode where readout electronics are placed inside. Generally, this offers a homogeneous electrical field in the sensor and short drift distances. TJ-Monopix1 employs a small charge collection electrode with readout electronics separated from the electrode and an additional n-type implant to achieve full depletion of the sensitive volume. This approach offers a low sensor capacitance and therefore low noise and is typically implemented with small pixel size. Abstract

As Māori and tāngata whaikaha (Māori with lived experience of disability) of the nation-state known as New Zealand, we are deeply concerned about the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this commentary, we invoke intersectionality as an analytical tool for understanding critical issues tāngata whaikaha face in the context of the universal approach encompassing New Zealand’s pandemic response. We propose a “call to action” framework comprising four elements: (1) guaranteeing self-determination for tāngata whaikaha; (2) addressing all forms of racism, ableism, and other structural forms of oppression; (3) rectifying historical injustices; and (4) allocating resources for the pandemic and beyond in alignment with need.

Abstract

Two different depleted monolithic CMOS active pixel sensor (DMAPS) prototypes with a fully synchronous column-drain read-out architecture were designed and tested: LF-Monopix and TJ-Monopix. These chips are part of a R&D effort towards a suitable implementation of a CMOS DMAPS for the HL-LHC ATLAS Inner Tracker. LF-Monopix was developed using a 150nm CMOS process on a highly resistive substrate (>2 k$\Omega\,$cm), while TJ-Monopix was fabricated using a modified 180 nm CMOS process with a 1 k$\Omega\,$cm epi-layer for depletion. The chips differ in their front-end design, biasing scheme, pixel pitch, dimensions of the collecting electrode relative to the pixel size (large and small electrode design, respectively) and the placement of read-out electronics within such electrode. Both chips were operational after thinning down to 100 $\mathrm{\mu}$m and additional back-side processing in LF-Monopix for total bulk depletion. The results in this work include measurements of their leakage current, noise, threshold dispersion, response to minimum ionizing particles and efficiency in test beam campaigns. Abstract

Depleted monolithic CMOS active pixel sensors (DMAPS) have been developed in order to demonstrate their suitability as pixel detectors in the outer layers of a toroidal LHC apparatus inner tracker (ATLAS ITk) pixel detector in the high-luminosity large hadron collider (HL-LHC). Two prototypes have been fabricated using 150 nm CMOS technology on high resistivity (> 2 k$\Omega$ $cm^2$) wafers. The chip size is equivalent to that of the current ATLAS pixel detector readout chip. One of the prototypes is used for detailed characterization of the sensor and the analog readout of the DMAPS. The other is a fully monolithic DMAPS including fast readout digital logic that handles the required hit rate. In order to yield a strong homogeneous electric field within the sensor volume, thinning of the wafer was tested. The prototypes were irradiated with X-ray up to a total ionization dose (TID) of 50 Mrad and with neutrons up to non-ionizing energy loss (NIEL) of $10^{15}$ $n_{eq}/cm^2$. The analog readout circuitry maintained its performance after TID irradiation, and the hit-efficiency at > $10^7$ noise occupancy was as high as 98.9 % after NIEL irradiation.

Previous studies examining nasalance have been mainly conducted with Indo-European languages. Limited information on nasalance is available in tone languages other than Chinese. Furthermore, tone and vowel effects on nasalance scores in tone languages have not been fully examined. Method: Nasalance scores of various speech stimuli including passages, syllables, and prolonged vowels were obtained from Vietnamese-speaking adults with Southern dialect (M[subscript age] = 23 years) using a nasometer (KayPENTAX 6450). Results: The average nasalance scores of Southern Vietnamese adult speakers were 24.16%, 38.17%, and 70.03% for the oral, oral-nasal, and nasal passages, respectively. Southern Vietnamese speakers produced the highest nasalance scores on the vowel /a/, followed by /i/ and /u/. Nasalance scores of stimuli produced with the falling and restricted tone were significantly lower than those produced with the other tones. Conclusions: The normative nasalance values of the current study will contribute as a reference index for the Vietnamese language. The effects of vowels and tones can also provide insight into the development of nasalance testing stimuli and for characterizing nasalance values across languages.

Abstract

This work presents a depleted monolithic active pixel sensor (DMAPS) prototype manufactured in the LFoundry 150 nm CMOS process. The described device, named LF-Monopix, was designed as a proof of concept of a fully monolithic sensor capable of operating in the environment of outer layers of the ATLAS Inner Tracker upgrade for the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). Implementing such a device in the detector module will result in a lower production cost and lower material budget compared to the presently used hybrid designs. In this paper the chip architecture will be described followed by the simulation and measurement results.

Abstract

A Redox Flow Battery (RFB) is one of the promising energy storage systems in power grid. An RFB has many advantages such as a quick response, a large capacity, and a scalability. Due to these advantages, an RFB can operate in mixed time scale. Actually, it has been demonstrated that an RFB can be used for load leveling, compensating sag, and smoothing the output of the renewable sources. An analysis on transient behaviors of an RFB is a key issue for these applications. An RFB is governed by electrical, chemical, and fluid dynamics. The hybrid structure makes the analysis difficult. To analyze transient behaviors of an RFB, the exact model is necessary. In this paper, we focus on a change in a concentration of ions in the electrolyte, and simulate the change with a model which is mainly based on chemical kinetics. The simulation results introduces transient behaviors of an RFB in a response to a load variation. There are found three kinds of typical transient behaviors including oscillations. 50. Conducting a Community-Based ESOL Programme Needs Analysis

Abstract

This article traces a community-based participatory action research (CBPAR) project which engaged local non-profits and the immigrant community in Flint, Michigan, USA, to identify areas for growth in support of local immigrant-background residents. Collaborative data-gathering began in 2015 with the creation of a community asset map which outlined existing services available to immigrants, as well as potential areas for growth. This was followed by a series of linguistically and culturally sensitive focus groups with immigrant-background participants. The use of CBPAR was foundational to this study because it engaged the local community in the needs analysis process and resulted in the development of grassroots ESOL programming. The article outlines steps and recommendations for community-based participatory ESOL needs analysis that can be applied to other geographical regions and ESOL programmes.
