We describe the new design and current performance of the Mid-InfraRed Spectrometer and Imager (MIRSI) on the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF). The system has been converted from a liquid nitrogen/liquid helium cryogen system to one that uses a closed-cycle cooler, which allows it to be kept on the telescope at operating temperature and available for observing on short notice, requiring less effort by the telescope operators and day crew to maintain operating temperature. Several other enhancements have been completed, including new detector readout electronics, an IRTF-style standard instrument user interface, new stepper motor driver electronics, and an optical camera that views the same field as the mid-IR instrument using a cold dichroic mirror, allowing for guiding and/or simultaneous optical imaging. The instrument performance is presented, both with an engineering-grade array used from 2021-2023, and a science-grade array installed in the fall of 2023. By quantizing network weights and activations to low bitwidth, we can obtain hardware-friendly and energy-efficient networks. However, existing quantization techniques utilizing the straight-through estimator and piecewise constant functions face the issue of how to represent originally high-bit input data with low-bit values. To fully quantize deep neural networks, we propose pixel embedding, which replaces each float-valued input pixel with a vector of quantized values by using a lookup table. The lookup table or low-bit representation of pixels is differentiable and trainable by backpropagation. Such replacement of inputs with vectors is similar to word embedding in the natural language processing field. Experiments on ImageNet and CIFAR-100 show that pixel embedding reduces the top-5 error gap caused by quantizing the floating points at the first layer to only 1% for the ImageNet dataset, and the top-1 error gap caused by quantizing first and last layers to slightly over 1% for the CIFAR-100 dataset. The usefulness of pixel embedding is further demonstrated by inference time measurements, which demonstrate over 1.7 times speedup compared to floating point precision first layer.

Honeycomb-lattice antiferromagnets have attracted wide attention for exploration of exotic heat transport and their interplay with magnetic excitations. In this work, we have revealed a contrasting behavior in the magneto-thermal conductivity (MTC) between two Co-based honeycomb-lattice magnets Co4M2O9 (M = Nb, Ta), despite their identical lattice structures and quite similar magnetism. Co4Ta2O9 exhibits enhanced MTC of about 550% at 9 T of an in-plane magnetic field, comparable to other honeycomb-magnets, while MTC for Co4Nb2O9 reaches only ~30%. This marked difference is ascribed to distinct features in the field-induced evolution of magnetic excitations that resonantly scatter phonons. We have developed an innovative lighting system that changes specific target colors while keeping the lights appearing naturally white. By precisely controlling the spectral power distribution (SPD) of illumination and harnessing the unique phenomenon of metamerism, our system achieves unique color variations in ways you've never seen before. Our system calculates the optimal SPDs of illumination for given materials to intensively induce metamerism, and then synthesizes the illumination using various colors of LEDs. We successfully demonstrated the system's implementation at Paris Fashion Week 2024. As models step onto the stage, their dresses initiate a captivating transformation. Our system altering the colors of the dresses, showcasing an impressive transition from one stunning color to another.

We report low-temperature powder X-ray and neutron diffraction studies on breathing pyrochlore magnets Cu$M$Cr$_{4}$S$_{8}$ ($M$ = Al, Ga), which undergo a magnetic transition at $T_{\rm N} \approx$ 21 and 31 K for {$M$ = Al and Ga, respectively. X-ray diffraction reveals that the magnetic transition accompanies a structural transition from cubic $F{\overline 4}3m$ to polar orthorhombic $Imm2$ symmetry for both the compounds, with larger distortion observed for $M$ = Ga at low temperatures. Neutron diffraction reveals incommensurate magnetic modulation ${\mathbf Q} = (q_{\rm IC}, 0.5, 0)$ in the orthorhombic setting, where $q_{\rm IC} \approx$ 0.39 and 0.31 for $M$ = Al and Ga, respectively. Our magnetic-structure analysis suggests cycloid-type magnetic order but not proper-screw type for both the compounds. We find strong correlation between the local spin configuration and Cr-Cr bond lengths, indicating that the spin-lattice coupling as well as the magnetic frustration play an important role in determining the ground state. We have developed a circularly polarized dielectric rutile (TiO$_2$) cavity with a high quality-factor that can generate circularly polarized microwaves from two orthogonal linearly polarized microwaves with a phase difference of $\pm\pi/2$ using a hybrid coupler. Using this cavity, we have established a new methodology to measure the microwave Hall conductivity of a small single crystal of metals in the skin-depth region. Based on the cavity perturbation technique, we have shown that all components of the surface impedance tensor can be extracted under the application of a magnetic field by comparing the right- and left-handed circularly polarization modes. To verify the validity of the developed method, we performed test measurements on tiny Bi single crystals at low temperatures. As a result, we have successfully obtained the surface impedance tensor components and confirmed that the characteristic field dependence of the ac Hall angle in the microwave region is consistent with the expectation from the dc transport measurements. These results demonstrate a significant improvement in sensitivity compared to previous methods. Topological semimetals are intriguing targets for exploring unconventional physical properties of massless fermions. Among them, nodal line or nodal ring semimetals have attracted attention for their unique one-dimensional band contact in momentum space and resulting nontrivial quantum phenomena. By field angular resolved magnetotransport measurements and theoretical calculations, we show that pressurized black phosphorus (BP) is an ideal nodal ring semimetal with weak spin-orbit coupling, which has a sole and carrier density-tunable nodal ring isolated from other trivial bands. We also revealed that the large magnetoresistance effect and its field-angular dependence in semimetallic BP are due to highly anisotropic relaxation time. Our results establish pressurized BP as an elemental model material for exploring nontrivial quantum properties unique to the topological nodal ring.

The thermoelectric Nernst effect of solids converts heat flow to beneficial electronic voltages. Here, using a correlated topological semimetal with high carrier mobility $\mu$ in presence of magnetic fluctuations, we demonstrate an enhancement of the Nernst effect close to a magnetic phase transition. A magnetic instability in NdAlSi modifies the carrier relaxation time on 'hotspots' in momentum space, causing a strong band filling dependence of $\mu$. We quantitatively derive electronic band parameters from a novel two-band analysis of the Nernst effect $S_{xy}$, in good agreement with quantum oscillation measurements and band calculations. While the Nernst response of NdAlSi behaves much like conventional semimetals at high temperatures, an additional contribution $\Delta S_{xy}$ from electronic correlations appears just above the magnetic transition. Our work demonstrates the engineering of the relaxation time, or the momentum-dependent self energy, to generate a large Nernst response independent of a material's carrier density, i.e. for metals, semimetals, and semiconductors with large $\mu$.

The design of translation symmetric bosonic codes, e.g., Gottesmann-Kitaev-Preskill and squeezed cat codes, is robust against photon loss, but the computation accuracy is limited by the available squeezing level. Here, we introduce the \textit{projective squeezing} (PS) method for computing outcomes for a higher squeezing level by revealing that a linear combination of displacement operators with periodic displacement values constitutes the smeared projector onto the better code space; we also show the analytical relationship between the increased squeezing level and the projection probability. We introduce concrete implementation methods for PS based on linear-combination-of-unitaries and virtual quantum error detection. We also numerically verify our analytical arguments and show that our protocol can mitigate the effect of photon loss.

We propose a scheme for generating a high-purity single photon on the basis of cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED). This scheme employs a four-level system including two excited states, two ground states, and two driving lasers; this structure allows the suppression of the re-excitation process due to the atomic decay, which is known to significantly degrade the single-photon purity in state-of-the-art photon sources using a three-level system. Our analysis shows that the re-excitation probability arbitrarily approaches zero without sacrificing the photon generation probability when increasing the power of the driving laser between the excited states. This advantage is achievable by using current cavity-QED technologies. The normal-conducting state of the superconductor UTe$_2$ is studied by entropy analysis for magnetic fields along the $b$-axis, obtained from magnetization using the relation $(\partial M/\partial T)_B=(\partial S/\partial B)_T$. We observe a strong increase in entropy with magnetic field due to metamagnetic fluctuations (spatially uniform, $Q=0$). The field dependence is well described by the Hertz-Millis-Moriya theory for quantum criticality of itinerant metamagnetism. Notably, the lower bound of the quantum-critical region coincides well with the position of the minimum in the superconducting transition temperature $T_c(B)$. We performed high-magnetic-field magnetization, polarization, and ultrasonic measurements in Ba$_2$CuGe$_2$O$_7$ to investigate field-induced multiferroic properties arising from a cross-correlation between electric dipoles and electric quadrupoles in addition to cross-correlation between magnetic dipoles and electric dipoles. Magnetization $M$ shows saturation behavior above 20 T for several magnetic field directions, however, electric polarization $P_c$ exhibits an increase, and elastic constants show a softening above 20 T. Based on quantum states with a crystalline electric field for the $D_{2d}$ point group and $d$-$p$ hybridization between Cu-$3d$ and O-$2p$ electrons, we confirmed that the matrix of an electric dipole $P_z$ was proportional to that of an electric quadrupole $O_{xy}$. Furthermore, considering the spin-orbit coupling of $3d$ electrons and the Zeeman effect, we showed that $P_z$ and $O_{xy}$ simultaneously exhibited field-induced responses. These findings indicate that the orbital degrees of freedom, in addition to the spin degrees of freedom, contribute to the high-field multiferroicity in Ba$_2$CuGe$_2$O$_7$., Comment: 28 pages, 13 figures, accepted in Phys. In this study, we performed high-magnetic-field magnetization, dielectric, and ultrasound measurements on an organic salt showing a ferroelectric spin-Peierls (FSP) state, which is in close proximity to a quantum critical point. In contrast to the sparsely distributed gas-like spin solitons typically observed in conventional spin-Peierls (SP) states, the FSP state exhibits dense liquid-like spin solitons resulting from strong quantum fluctuations, even at low fields. Nevertheless, akin to conventional SP systems, a magnetic-field-induced transition is observed in the FSP state. In conventional high-field SP states, an emergent wave vector results in the formation of a spin-soliton lattice. However, in the present high-field FSP state, the strong quantum fluctuations preclude the formation of such a soliton lattice, causing the dense solitons to remain in a quantum-mechanically melted state. This observation implies the realization of a quantum liquid--liquid transition of topological particles carrying spin and charge in a ferroelectric insulator.

Encoding logical qubits with surface codes and performing multi-qubit logical operations with lattice surgery is one of the most promising approaches to demonstrate fault-tolerant quantum computing. Thus, a method to efficiently schedule a sequence of lattice-surgery operations is vital for high-performance fault-tolerant quantum computing. A possible strategy to improve the throughput of lattice-surgery operations is splitting a large instruction into several small instructions such as Bell state preparation and measurements and executing a part of them in advance. However, scheduling methods to fully utilize this idea have yet to be explored. In this paper, we propose a fast and high-performance scheduling algorithm for lattice-surgery instructions leveraging this strategy. We achieved this by converting the scheduling problem of lattice-surgery instructions to a graph problem of embedding 3D paths into a 3D lattice, which enables us to explore efficient scheduling by solving path search problems in the 3D lattice. Based on this reduction, we propose a method to solve the path-finding problems, Dijkstra projection. We numerically show that this method reduced the execution time of benchmark programs generated from quantum phase estimation algorithms by 2.7 times compared with a naive method based on greedy algorithms. Our study establishes the relation between the lattice-surgery scheduling and graph search problems, which leads to further theoretical analysis on compiler optimization of fault-tolerant quantum computing.

Transition-metal atoms with d electrons sometimes form clusters in crystals, which significantly affects the physical properties. Such a cluster formation frequently accompanies a change in the crystal system, leading to the presence of domains with different crystal orientations. In particular, the cubic symmetry is rarely retained after the cluster formation. Here, we identify a cubic-to-cubic phase transition in lacunar spinel GaNb$_4$Se$_8$, where the change in the lattice parameter is less than 0.0001%. Each Nb$^{3.25+}$ tetramer with seven 4d electrons is distorted into a Nb$^{3+}$ trimer and a Nb$^{4+}$ monomer induced by charge disproportionation among Nb ions. While the Nb$^{3+}$ trimer with six 4d electrons forms spin-singlets in the sigma-bonding orbitals for three Nb-Nb bonds, a localized S=1/2 spin remains on the Nb$^{4+}$ ion. Furthermore, a local electric dipole moment is induced along the three-fold rotation axis of each distorted tetramer by the cluster rearrangement. The investigation of high-temperature superconductors under high magnetic fields is one of the most important topics in condensed matter physics. For YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ (YBCO), the measurements of magnetoresistance under a high magnetic field are technically challenging because the required magnetic field ($B$) is 100 T class. The low temperature (from 52 to 150 K) magnetoresistance is measured in optimally-doped YBCO thin films under the condition $B$$\parallel$CuO$_2$-plane up to 103 T by employing the single-turn coil technique and a radio frequency reflection method. The electrical resistivity $\rho$ exhibits $B$-linear behavior in the normal phase in the high magnetic field region. The field slope coefficient $\beta$ (=$d\rho/dB$) becomes converged at low temperatures. The convergency of $\beta$ below $T_c$ indicates the field-induced strange metal phase, which is determined by the quantum critical fluctuation at high magnetic fields. The $\beta$ value difference under the different directions of the magnetic field suggests the strong anisotropy in quantum critical fluctuations in the strange metal phase of YBCO., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

Cavity-mediated adiabatic transfer (CMAT) is a robust way to perform a two-qubit gate between trapped atoms inside an optical cavity. In the previous study by Goto and Ichimura [H. Goto and K. Ichimura, Phys. Rev. A 77, 013816 (2008).], the upper bound of success probability of CMAT was shown where the operation is adiabatically slow. For practical applications, however, it is crucial to operate CMAT as fast as possible without sacrificing the success probability. In this paper, we investigate the operational speed limit of CMAT conditioned on the success probability being close to the upper bound. In CMAT both the adiabatic condition and the decay of atoms and cavity modes limit the operational speed. We show which of these two conditions more severely limits the operational speed in each cavity-QED parameter region, and find that the maximal operational speed is achieved when the influence of cavity decay is dominant compared to spontaneous emission., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

We investigate edge and bulk states in Weyl-orbit based quantum Hall effect by measuring a Corbino-type device fabricated from a topological Dirac semimetal (Cd1-xZnx)3As2 film. Clear quantum Hall plateaus are observed when measuring one-sided terminals of the Corbino-type device. This indicates that edge states of the Weyl-orbit quantum Hall effect form closed trajectories consisting of Fermi arcs and chiral zero modes independently on inner and outer sides. On the other hand, the bulk resistance does not diverge at fields where the quantum Hall plateau appears, suggesting that the Weyl orbits in the bulk region are not completely localized when applying electric current through the bulk region.

In this paper, we consider conic-line arrangements that arise from Poncelet's closure theorem. We study unramified double covers of the union of two conics, that are induced by a $2m$-sided Poncelet transverse. As an application, we show the existence of families of Zariski pairs of degree $2m+6$ for $m\geq 2$ that consist of reducible curves having two conics and $2m+2$ lines as irreducible components., Comment: 12 pages. This paper presents the first dataset for Japanese Legal Judgment Prediction (LJP), the Japanese Tort-case Dataset (JTD), which features two tasks: tort prediction and its rationale extraction. The rationale extraction task identifies the court's accepting arguments from alleged arguments by plaintiffs and defendants, which is a novel task in the field. JTD is constructed based on annotated 3,477 Japanese Civil Code judgments by 41 legal experts, resulting in 7,978 instances with 59,697 of their alleged arguments from the involved parties. Our baseline experiments show the feasibility of the proposed two tasks, and our error analysis by legal experts identifies sources of errors and suggests future directions of the LJP research., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures. The two-dimensional (2D) spin-1/2 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet is believed to host quantum spin liquid (QSL) states with no magnetic order, but its ground state remains largely elusive. An important outstanding question concerns the presence or absence of the 1/9 magnetization plateau, where exotic quantum states, including topological ones, are expected to emerge. Here we report the magnetization of a recently discovered kagome QSL candidate YCu$_3$(OH)$_{6.5}$Br$_{2.5}$ up to 57 T. Above 50 T, a clear magnetization plateau at 1/3 of the saturation moment of Cu$^{2+}$ ions is observed, supporting that this material provides an ideal platform for the kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet. Remarkably, we found another magnetization plateau around 20 T, which is attributed to the 1/9 plateau. The temperature dependence of this plateau reveals the distinct spin gap, whose magnitude estimated by the plateau width is approximately 10% of the exchange interaction. Bulk bismuth has a complex Landau spectrum. The small effective masses and the large g-factors are anisotropic. The chemical potential drifts at high magnetic fields. Moreover, twin boundaries further complexify the interpretation of the data by producing extra anomalies in the extreme quantum limit. Here, we present a study of angle dependence of magnetoresistance up to 65 T in bismuth complemented with Nernst, ultrasound, and magneto-optic data. All observed anomalies can be explained in a single-particle picture of a sample consisting of two twinned crystals tilted by 108$^{\circ}$ and with two adjacent crystals keeping their own chemical potentials despite a shift between chemical potentials as large as 68 meV at 65 T. This implies an energy barrier between adjacent twinned crystals reminiscent of a metal-semiconductor Schottky barrier or a p-n junction. We argue that this barrier is built by accumulating charge carriers of opposite signs across a twin boundary., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

A plethora of correlated and exotic metallic states have been identified on the border of itinerant magnetism, where the long-range spin texture is melted by tuning the magnetic transition temperature (T$_C$) towards zero, referred to as the quantum phase transition (QPT). So far, the study of QPT in itinerant magnets has mainly focused on low-T$_C$ materials (i.e., typically T$_C$ ~ 10 K) where the modification of electronic band structure is subtle, and only makes a small contribution to the QPT. Here we report a distinct example of a magnetic QPT accompanied by a gigantic modification of the electronic structure in FeGe, i.e., a well-studied itinerant chiral magnet hosting near-room-temperature (T$_C$ = 278 K) helical/skyrmion spin texture. The pressure-driven modification of the band structure (e.g., reduction of exchange splitting) is evidenced by magneto-transport study, suggesting a Fermi-surface reconstruction around the magnetic QPT (P ~19 GPa), in stark contrast to the case of typical metallic ferromagnets. Further application of pressure leads to a metal-to-insulator transition above P > 30 GPa, as also corroborated by our density-functional theory (DFT) calculation. Of particular interest is the occurrence of anomalous magneto-transport in the inhomogeneous short-range chiral-spin ground state (P = 20-30 GPa) above the QPT, with longitudinal fluctuations of magnetization. The unexpected observation of spontaneous anomalous Hall effect in this exotic quantum regime suggests macroscopic time-reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking, even in the absence of long-range magnetic order. Our findings mark the large body of unexplored high-T$_C$ itinerant magnets with broken inversion-symmetry as promising candidates of novel ground state formation near QPT.
