Bibliographical data are one of the most important types of data for data-driven research and curation in the humanities. The goal of the panel is to introduce various aspects of current bibliographical data ecosystem which is shaped by constant interactions between various public and private stakeholders.

This paper combines text reuse detection (using software developed for protein string detection) with genre classification based on the Bert transformer model, to understand changing patterns of genre and intextuality in a large dataset of eighteenth century British and Irish texts.

Workflow and first results of the project PreCEM, which aims at reconstruction the circulation of classics (Latin and Ancient Greek) in Early Modern England

This report has been prepared by the “Bibliographical Data” Working Group of the DARIAH-ERIC consortium, which develops public digital research infrastructure for the arts and humanities. The Group consists of more than 30 members from 15 countries, most of whom are researchers and curators in the public sector who are engaged in bibliographical data (“bibliodata”) research and curation. This report is aimed at all active stakeholders in the humanities bibliodata landscape,especially public sector entities who may benefit from the Group’s insights and engage in cooperation to identify common interests, shape joint agendas, and achieve common goals. Those goals include creating shared infrastructure solutions, harmonising existing standards, and building partnerships to meet major challenges for contemporary bibliodata stakeholders. The bibliodata landscape is a dynamic ecosystem including the many stakeholders who produce, process, and use diverse bibliographical resources (datasets, tools, services). Following the digital revolution, this landscape has been reconfigured and a critical era is now upon us that demands closer investigation. This report analyses the state of the art by defining current bibliodata (Chapter 1), mapping the contemporary landscape (Chapter 2), identifying crucial stakeholder challenges and opportunities (Chapter 3), and offering recommendations for future cooperation (Chapter 4). This report presents an overview of issues in the bibliodata landscape. It is intended to provide a foundation for more detailed reports and case studies on the issues identified in this document.

This publication presents the abstracts of What’s Past is Prologue: The NewsEye International Conference organised by the consortium of the EU Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme project NewsEye: A Digital Investigator for Historical Newspapers. This conference, which was held online on the 16th and 17th of March 2021, featured four keynote speakers and over thirty presenters hailing from eleven countries. Spanning from May 2018 to January 2022, NewsEye is a research project advancing the state of the art and introducing new concepts, methods and tools for digital humanities by providing enhanced access to historical newspapers for a wide range of users. Hence, the conference theme Towards a future of interdisciplinary collaboration between Cultural Heritage, Digital Humanities, Computer Science and Data Science reflects certain aspects of the NewsEye project itself. The NewsEye consortium is composed of three national libraries and eight research groups based in Austria, Finland, France and Germany, which have each contributed specialised knowledge in the aforementioned subjects.

In this paper, we use the concept of workflow to discuss integrated interdisciplinary collaboration. We argue that interdisciplinary teams can benefit from an understanding of the workflows and traditions of each of the disciplines involved and provide a schematic synthesis of typical workflow viewpoints of the disciplines, highlighting their similarities and differences. Integrated approaches are needed to successfully exploit the full potential of digitized sources. Therefore, we elaborate on research steps and tasks where all fields come together and eventually propose an integrated digital hermeneutics workflow for research work on digital cultural heritage.

This short paper introduces the NewsEye project.

Newspapers have been a rich source of information for historians for the past hundred years or so. In the past twenty years, digitization of newspapers has made it possible to do simple tasks such as keyword searches or more elaborate text mining analyses. Advancements like this create unprecedented possibilities to the analysis of historical sources. While there is some truth to the promisesof the future, the reality is such that the research on digitized newspapers remains underdeveloped with regard to reference corpora and reproducibility of the research. Digitized newspapers are particularly discussed with respect to the development of public discourse, but the idea of entering the realm of past discoursethrough the digitized newspapers may in the end be harmful. In reality, historians are interested in the different layers of newspaper publicity, thus location and temporality always play a crucial role of any historical analysis of public discourse in newspapers.

This report provides information about activities and progress towards establishing DARIAH membership in six countries: the Czech Republic, Finland, Israel, Spain, Switzerland, and the UK, which took place between July and December 2019. Previous activities were described in detail in the D3.2 - Regularly Monitor Country-Specific Progress in Enabling New DARIAH Membership. During the project lifetime, the Czech Republic joined DARIAH ERIC; in other countries, collaboration with DARIAH has been greatly strengthened and significant progress regarding DARIAH membership has been achieved. The report also outlines the next steps in the accession processes, building on the results of the DESIR project.

This paper gives the reader a chance to experience, or revisit, PHOS16: a conference on the History and Philosophy of Open Science. In the winter of 2016, we invited a varied international group to engage with these topics at the University of Helsinki, Finland. Our aim was to critically assess the defining features, underlying narratives, and overall objectives of the open science movement. The event brought together contemporary open science scholars, publishers, and advocates to discuss the philosophical foundations and historical roots of openness in academic research. The eight sessions combined historical views with more contemporary perspectives on topics such as transparency, reproducibility, collaboration, publishing, peer review, research ethics, as well as societal impact and engagement. We gathered together expert panellists and 15 invited speakers who have published extensively on these topics, allowing us to engage in a thorough and multifaceted discussion. Together with our involved audience we charted the role and foundations of openness of research in our time, considered the accumulation and dissemination of scientific knowledge, and debated the various technical, legal, and ethical challenges of the past and present. In this article, we provide an overview of the topics covered at the conference as well as individual video interviews with each speaker. In addition to this, all the talks, Q&A sessions, and interviews were recorded and they are offered here as an openly licensed community resource in both video and audio form.

This paper demonstrates the use of the ESTC as a representation of material history through the extraction and parsing of its data in a way which allows it to be used in social network analysis. In doing this it makes two contributions. The first is methodological, outlining how such a transformation of data is possible. The second is historical, by demonstrating how this data can be used to support historical claims.
