Nowadays, collaborative operations between Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) face considerable challenges, particularly in leader–follower schemes. The underwater environment imposes limitations on acoustic modems, leading to reduced transmission speeds and increased latency in ROV position and speed transmission. This complicates effective communication between the ROVs. Traditional methods, such as Recursive Least Squares (RLS) predictors and the Kalman filter, have been employed to address these issues. However, these approaches have limitations in handling non-linear patterns and disturbances in underwater environments. This paper introduces a Convolutional Long Short-Term Memory (ConvLSTM) predictor designed to enhance communication and trajectory tracking between ROVs in a leader–follower scheme. The proposed ConvLSTM aims to address the shortcomings of previous methods by adapting effectively to varying conditions, including ocean currents, communication delays, and signal interruptions. Simulations were conducted to evaluate ConvLSTM’s performance and compare it with other advanced predictors, such as Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), under different conditions. The results demonstrated that ConvLSTM achieved a 13.9% improvement in trajectory tracking, surpassing other predictors in scenarios that replicate real underwater conditions and multi-vehicle communication. These results highlight ConvLSTM’s potential to significantly enhance the performance and stability of collaborative ROV operations in dynamic underwater environments.

Unmanned underwater vehicles perform inspection and maintenance tasks in complex and changing environments. Some of these tasks require synchronous navigation of multiple vehicles, which is challenging. This paper proposes a synchronous navigation scheme for two BlueROV2 underwater vehicles for a coordinated multi-vehicle task. In the proposed scheme, the vehicles perform the collaborative task of grasping, transporting, and releasing an object. In this scheme, no vehicle-to-vehicle communication is required. A model-free second-order sliding mode controller with finite-time convergence is used to accomplish this task. The controller’s convergence time is user-defined and does not depend on the physical or hydrodynamic parameters of the vehicle, unlike the other finite-time controllers found in the literature. Simulation experiments were conducted to verify the controller’s performance, including high ocean currents as external disturbances. Comparisons were made with two state-of-the-art controllers with finite-time convergence. The results showed that the proposed controller achieved the best results, as the user-defined convergence time was achieved for both vehicles and the collaborative task was completed, no ripples, deviations, or oscillations were observed, and no chattering occurred. The results proved the robustness of the controller in the presence of high ocean currents without the need to readjust the parameters.

The use of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) has expanded in recent years to include inspection, maintenance, and repair missions. For these tasks, the vehicle must maintain its position while inspections or manipulations are performed. Some station-keeping controllers for AUVs can be found in the literature that exhibits robust performance against external disturbances. However, they are either model-based or require an observer to deal with the disturbances. Moreover, most of them have been evaluated only by numerical simulations. In this paper, the feasibility of a model-free high-order sliding mode controller for the station-keeping problem is validated. The proposed controller was evaluated through numerical simulations and experiments in a semi-Olympic swimming pool, introducing external disturbances that remained unknown to the controller. Results have shown robust performance in terms of the root mean square error (RMSE) of the vehicle position. The simulation resulted in the outstanding station-keeping of the BlueROV2 vehicle, as the tracking errors were kept to zero throughout the simulation, even in the presence of strong ocean currents. The experimental results demonstrated the robustness of the controller, which was able to maintain the RMSE in the range of 1–4 cm for the depth of the vehicle, outperforming related work, even when the disturbance was large enough to produce thruster saturation.

Several control strategies have been proposed for the trajectory tracking problem of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV). Most of them are model-based, hence, detailed knowledge of the parameters of the robot is needed. Few works consider a finite-time convergence in their controllers, which offers strong robustness and fast convergence compared with asymptotic or exponential solutions. Those finite-time controllers do not permit the users to predefine the convergence time, which can be useful for a more efficient use of the robot’s energy. This paper presents the experimental validation of a model-free high-order Sliding Mode Controller (SMC) with finite-time convergence in a predefined time. The convergence time is introduced by the simple change of a time-base parameter. The aim is to validate the controller so it can be implemented for cooperative missions where the communication is limited or null. Results showed that the proposed controller can drive the robot to the desired depth and heading trajectories in the predefined time for all the cases, reducing the error by up to 75% and 41% when compared with a PID and the same SMC with asymptotic convergence. The energy consumption was reduced 35% and 50% when compared with those same controllers.

Submarine gliders are specialized systems used in applications such as environmental monitoring of marine fauna, in the oil industry, among others. The glider launch and capture is a costly process that requires substantial technological and human resources, so the orderly and error-free storage of data is of fundamental importance due to the subsequent analysis. The amount of information being obtained from the seabed is increasing, this leads to the need to develop robust and low-cost ad-hocsystems for this type of application. The challenge is the integration of the different software layers in the storage system because the monitored variables must be ordered according to different glider operations such as calibration data update and navigation. Additionally, to avoid data corruption in the memory chip, error control coding must be used. The goal of this paper is to present a novel design of different layers of software integrated into a datalogger: reception, error control, and storage logic for the different glider operations. The design of the datalogger is based on a NAND flash memory chip and an MSP430 microcontroller. To correct bit-flipping errors, a BCH code that corrects 4 errors for every 255 bits is implemented into the microcontroller. The design and evaluation are performed for different glider operations, and for different lengths and correction capabilities of the BCH module. A test to calculate the storage time has been carried out. This test shows that in the case of 256 bytes per sample, at 30 samples per minute, and 1 GB of storage capacity, it is possible to collect data from the glider sensors for 84 days. The results obtained show that our device is a useful option for storing underwater sensor data due to its real-time storage, power consumption, small size, easy integration, and its reliability, where the bit error rate BER is of 2.4 ×10−11.

Several strategies to deal with the trajectory tracking problem of Unmanned Underwater Vehicles are encountered, from traditional controllers such as Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) or Lyapunov-based, to backstepping, sliding mode, and neural network approaches. However, most of them are model-based controllers where it is imperative to have an accurate knowledge of the vehicle hydrodynamic parameters. Despite some sliding mode and neural network-based controllers are reported as model-free, just a few of them consider a solution with finite-time convergence, which brings strong robustness and fast convergence compared with asymptotic or exponential solutions and it can also help to reduce the power consumption of the vehicle thrusters. This work aims to implement a model-free high-order sliding-mode controller and synthesize it with a time-base generator to achieve finite-time convergence. The time-base was included by parametrizing the control gain at the sliding surface. Numerical simulations validated the finite-time convergence of the controller for different time-bases even in the presence of high ocean currents. The performance of the obtained solution was also evaluated by the Root Mean Square (RMS) value of the control coefficients computed for the thrusters, as a parameter to measure the power consumption of the vehicle when following a trajectory. Computational results showed a reduction of up to 50% in the power consumption from the thrusters when compared with other solutions.

The perinatal mortality rate is very high throughout the world. A fetal monitor may be used remotely, and this would tackle the problem of continuous monitoring of high-risk pregnancies. There is evidence that current technology is of low reliability, and, therefore, of low precision to identify fetal health. In medical technological implementation, a safe, efficient, and reliable operation must be guaranteed, and the main problem is that remote fetal monitor gathers just a few samples, so the hypothesis of classical theory is not met. We are proposing an approach that improves the data’s lack of reliability that accompanies the use of a remote fetal monitor. The method refers to how, by using the existing technologies and the initial experimental data, it is possible to apply probabilistic models that are truly representative of each application. This leads to the characterization of properties of the statistics used to generate a representative probabilistic model without the need to consider the hard suppositions. Results show that, for every case study, it was possible to improve estimations of measurement uncertainty. The proposed method is a useful tool to increase the reliability of medical technology, especially for pieces of equipment where a health care professional is not available.

Development of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) has permitted the automatization of many tasks originally achieved with manned vehicles in underwater environments. Teams of AUVs designed to work within a common mission are opening the possibilities for new and more complex applications. In underwater environments, communication, localization, and navigation of AUVs are considered challenges due to the impossibility of relying on radio communications and global positioning systems. For a long time, acoustic systems have been the main approach for solving these challenges. However, they present their own shortcomings, which are more relevant for AUV teams. As a result, researchers have explored different alternatives. To summarize and analyze these alternatives, a review of the literature is presented in this paper. Finally, a summary of collaborative AUV teams and missions is also included, with the aim of analyzing their applicability, advantages, and limitations.

This paper presents the improvement of an ultrasonic pulse generator for a pipeline inspection gauge (PIG), which uses 64 transducers for inspecting distances up to 100 km with an axial resolution fixed at 3 mm and variable speeds between 0 and 2 m/s. An ultrasonic pulse generator is composed of a high-voltage (HV) MOSFETs, driver logic and an HV power supply. We used a DC-HV DC converter device as the HV power supply because it reduces the size of the ultrasound system considerably. However, pipeline geometry and inspection effects such as hammer and shock cause a variable pulse repetition frequency (PRF), producing voltage drops, poor quality of the HV pulse generated, failures in the dimensioning of defects and damage to devices by over-voltage. Our improvement is to implement a control scheme to maintain the high quality of the HV regardless of the variable PRF. To achieve this, we characterized three transfer functions of the DC-HV DC converter, varying the connected load to 10%, 45% and 80%. For the characterization, we used the least squares technique, considering an autoregressive exogenous (ARX) model. Later, we compared three control schemes: (1) proportional-integral-derivative (PID) tuned by simultaneous optimization of several responses (SOSR), (2) PID tuned by a neural network (NN) and (3) PI tuned by the analytical design method (ADM). The metrics used to compare the control schemes were the recovery time, the maximum over-voltage and the excess energy when the shock and hammer effects happen to occur. Finally, to verify the improvement of the HV pulser, we compared the ultrasonic pulses generated for various frequencies and amplitudes using the pulse generator with and without the control scheme.

Underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) play an important role in a number of shallow and deep-water missions for marine science, oil and gas extraction, exploration and salvage. In these applications, the motions of the ROV are guided either by a human pilot on a surface support vessel through an umbilical cord providing power and telemetry, or by an automatic pilot. In the case of automatic control, ROV state feedback is provided by acoustic and inertial sensors and this state information, along with a controller strategy, is used to perform several tasks such as station-keeping and auto-immersion/heading, among others. In this paper, the modelling, design and control of the Kaxan ROV is presented: i ) The complete six degrees of freedom, non linear hydrodynamic model with its parameters, ii ) the Kaxan hardware/software architecture, iii ) numerical simulations in Matlab/Simulink platform of a model-free second order sliding mode control along with ocean currents as disturbances and thruster dynamics, iv ) a virtual environment to visualize the motion of the Kaxan ROV and v ) experimental results of a one degree of freedom underwater system.

For decades, PID (Proportional + Integral + Derivative)-like controllers have been successfully used in academia and industry for many kinds of plants. This is thanks to its simplicity and suitable performance in linear or linearized plants, and under certain conditions, in nonlinear ones. A number of PID controller gains tuning approaches have been proposed in the literature in the last decades; most of them off-line techniques. However, in those cases wherein plants are subject to continuous parametric changes or external disturbances, online gains tuning is a desirable choice. This is the case of modular underwater ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles) where parameters (weight, buoyancy, added mass, among others) change according to the tool it is fitted with. In practice, some amount of time is dedicated to tune the PID gains of a ROV. Once the best set of gains has been achieved the ROV is ready to work. However, when the vehicle changes its tool or it is subject to ocean currents, its performance deteriorates since the fixed set of gains is no longer valid for the new conditions. Thus, an online PID gains tuning algorithm should be implemented to overcome this problem. In this paper, an auto-tune PID-like controller based on Neural Networks (NN) is proposed. The NN plays the role of automatically estimating the suitable set of PID gains that achieves stability of the system. The NN adjusts online the controller gains that attain the smaller position tracking error. Simulation results are given considering an underactuated 6 DOF (degrees of freedom) underwater ROV. Real time experiments on an underactuated mini ROV are conducted to show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

The Variable Buoyancy System (VBS) is a critical device in the operation of underwater gliders that should be properly sized to achieve the required vehicle propulsion; safety within the operating range; and adequate efficiency at the nominal depth rating. The VBS budget volume depends mainly on the glider hydrodynamics and the main operating states of the vehicle. A method is proposed with analytical equations to analyze the performance of underwater gliders and to estimate the resultant velocities of the vehicle as a function of the buoyancy change and the glider angle. The method is validated to analyze the glider performance of underwater gliders and is essential to get the main design requirement for the propulsion system: the VBS budget volume. The paper presents the application of the method to obtain the VBS sizing for an academic glider; a comparison with the historical hydrodynamic data of the Slocum glider; the results of the glider performance study; and the development of the characteristic charts necessary to evaluate the performance of the vehicle and its flight parameters.
