Research on the nature and role of territoriality in local industrial systems has intensified since the late 1960s when the Marshallian notion of industrial district (id) was recovered, which introduced it as a double reality, geographical and cultural, with a role as decisive as it is difficult to define. Within this framework, the paper proposes, on the one hand, to analyze the evolution of territoriality as a dimension inherent to id. It develops its conceptual metamorphosis from the difficulties that emerged in its articulation with the capitalist relations of production. On the other hand, we seek to contribute to a rework of this issue based on id in peripheral spaces. We try to show how, in the specificity of the periphery, the id had to open itself to the influence of extra-local relations and it exposed the need for a redefinition of territoriality as a social relation producer of multiple scales, articulated with the a-spatial deployment of capitalist relations of production. The notion of id is reworked in this context as a specific and qualitatively different socioeconomic formation, related to the accumulation process and its scalar articulation. Industrial systems are not isolated socioeconomic units, but while they retain a certain unity and delimitation, they are articulated by social relations that are defined on different spatial scales. However, the observation of the territorial structure of industrial systems is not simple or direct, since these scalar social relations overlap and combine. Different methods have been developed for the study of industrial systems, emphasizing their multiscalarity; however, the theoretical and methodological issue persists. This paper will seek to contribute to this question by analyzing the notion of territorial structure both from a theoretical-methodological point of view, as well as through the analysis of the matrix of origin and destination of inputs and products, estimated for those of the industrial systems of the Province of Santa Fe, Argentina. The article proposes a comprehensive point of view aimed at capturing the ways in which social relations, which operate on different scales, articulate the work of localized productive systems. An operationalization based on the observation of product and supply movements is proposed, in different spatial horizons, showing potential features of qualitatively different territorial structures. The territorial dimension constitutes an inherent dimension to Latin American structuralist thought, which objected to the spatial metaphors that comprised the main currents of economic thought. The conceptualizations of the center-periphery relations were not limited to formulating hypotheses ad hoc to the pre-existing conceptual nuclei. On the contrary, they tried to capture the specificity of the periphery as a particular historical process of modernization and social structuring. However, the territorial relations of a subnational nature, in other words, the regional issues, had less weight and constituted a genuine problem that questioned this perspective. The present work aims to analyze the development of this debate considering its relationship with the principal Latin American structuralist hypotheses as an analysis criterion. We concluded that this debate was marked by a progressive distancing from the mentioned structuralism theoretical bases, leaving the regional question as a problem pending resolution. The coexistence of social relations that are defined on different territorial scales and the asymmetric structuring of world space, with central and peripheral positions, constitute two central dimensions of the spatial structuring of socioeconomic systems. Although these two moments were extensively studied, their internal connections are a relatively less explored area. In this framework, the aim of this work is to explore the intrinsic relationships between these moments, constructing a historical-structural interpretation. In order to achieve this objective, the main contributions that focused on the specificity of each moment were analysed, mobilizing different theories about the relationship between society and space. First, the theoretical development of the scalar question is discussed, showing how the relational turn constituted the key theoretical bet of the articulation between the world unity of the capital accumulation process and its spatial structuring on multiple scales. Secondly, the limitations that this option faces are synthesized when the contingency is prioritized as the basis of its conceptual apprehension. Third, a symmetrical criterion is taken to study the theories of dependency and Latin American structuralism, showing how, particularly in the latter case, there are theoretical potentialities to synthesize the scalarity and asymmetric spatial structuring of socioeconomic systems. The work concludes observing that the latter depends on returning to the historical-structural specificity of the peripheral modernization, considering the specific ways in which territoriality and capitalist relations of production are articulated.
