The aim of this study was to investigate how the oxidation state of copper (Cu(I) vs Cu(II)), the nature of the interface (solid/aqueous vs solid/air), positional isomerism, and incubation time affect the functionalization of the surface of copper oxide nanostructures by [(butylamino)(pyridine)methyl]phenylphosphinic acid (PyPA). This article is an attempt to interest the subjects associated with maritime technology — in the possibilities of increasing the safety of Polish Navy ships (or civilian ships), which may be threatened by attacks of maneuvering missiles and drones moving at low altitude at high speed. The concept proposed by the team was initially verified in simulation tests and the obtained results of these studies indicate that the automated missile self-defence system based on guided and unguided missiles with caliber 40 mm and 70 mm, can be an effective means of self-defence (even the smallest vessels). Small dimensions and mass as well as simplicity of use and reliability of this weapon system allow to believe that 40 mm MLRS1 could also be used by special forces of Polish Navy in offensive operations (destruction of lightly armoured objects of surface or ground, vehicles, force, putting smoke screens, mine mines) to 2000 m. For that reason, the system is referred to by the team of implementers as ‘pocket rocket artillery’.

Prace pogłębiarskie związane z utrzymaniem odpowiednich głębokości nawigacyjnych torów podejściowych, basenów i kanałów portowych są konieczne do prawidłowej eksploatacji portów. Urobek pogłębiarski z basenów portowych (chrakteryzujący się drobnymi frakcjami), często nie posiada parametrów pozwalających na wykorzystanie go w sposób użyteczny i musi być odkładany na morskich klapowiskach. Deponowanie osadów w morzu jest działaniem o niekorzystnym wpływie na środowisko i w tym kontekście należy dążyć do minimalizacji negatywnych oddziaływań związanych z tego typu operacjami. Użyteczność modeli numerycznych stworzonych na bazie pakietu obliczeniowego MIKE 21, była sprawdzana w celu oceny oddziaływania klapowisk w różnych fazach ich eksploatacji na środowisko morskie. Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia założenia i kolejne fazy budowy modelu numerycznego, który byłby przydatny do opisu rozprzestrzeniania się urobku pogłębiarskiego z obszaru klapowiska, tak podczas samego deponowania jak i w okresie późniejszym. Uwagi zawarte w artykule dotyczą zasad doboru obszaru obliczeniowego, skali czasowej modelowanych zjawisk, problemów dotyczących definiowania warunków brzegowych na otwartych granicach modelu oraz optymalnego zakresu prowadzenia symulacji obliczeniowych. The objective of this survey was to obtain information on the level of knowledge of prophylactic behaviour as a protection against fundamental tick-borne diseases among inhabitants of south-eastern Poland, and to determine whether the professions that increase the probability of tick contact, as well as previous contact with ticks, influenced the knowledge on tick-borne diseases and prophylactic behaviour of the respondents. The questionnaire included questions about gender of respondents, their place of residence and preventive behaviour against tick bite. The respondents were asked about the occupational hazard of working in tick infested areas, history of tick bites, awareness of diseases transmitted by ticks and the sources of their knowledge. The research was carried out in 2005. The most frequent preventive measures used were tick repellents (38 % ) and wearing protective clothing (35 % ). According to the questionnaire survey, 21 % of respondents did not take any preventive measures. The practice and form of prophylaxis was associated with the place of residence. In contrast to individuals from rural areas, a relatively low percentage of urban inhabitants used simple methods for protecting themselves against tick bites. Our survey indicates that the awareness of the Lublin region inhabitants concerning methods of tick bite prevention is still low and greater efforts are needed in promoting basic methods of protection and disseminating knowledge about these arthropods.

The Avantage double mobility press-fit cup was devised by Dr. Bousquet in the 70's to bring reasonable response to a problem of recurrent dislocation after total hip arthroplasty. The cup is attached to the femoral head by a bipolar polyethylene liner. The polyethylene liner moves freely inside a shiny--polished metal cup. The angular range of motion before impingement is increased by the mobility of the liner. The double connection (cup-liner, liner-head) reduces the stress on the metal cup and improve the stability of the prosthesis. The solution has proved to be efficient in reducing dislocation risk and maintains at the same time the appropriate range of motion. Between January 2004 and November 2005, 113 hip arthroplasties in 108 women with use of the double mobility cup were performed. The cemented version of the Avantage cup was inserted in 15 patients (mean age--76.9 years). Uncemented, HA coated implant was used in 98 patients (with mean age of 55 years). The mean follow-up was 20.4 months. No one patient was lost to follow-up. No postoperative dislocation was observed during follow-up. There was no unwanted leg lengthening greater than 1 cm. The Avantage cup may be indicated in any primary total hip arthroplasty especially in those with increased risk of postoperative dislocations. This cup enables a correct balance of the hip without a need of the unwanted lengthening of the leg.

Three anomalies in the anus structure of Hyalomma marginatum marginatum larvae, two anomalies in Argas reflexus larvae, i.e. the lack of the left chelicera and the second pair of limbs at the right side, and disorder in chetotaxy of Argas persicus larvae were examined in this research. These anomalies have not been described so far in the literature.

Composting can be defined as an exothermic process involving the microbiological decomposition of organic substances taking place in aerobic conditions with the active participation of thermophilic microorganisms and mould. The process generates a lot of heat, which is dissipated into the environment. If it were possible to acquire the lost heat energy, it could be then used for various utility purposes. An important problem is estimating the heat loss emitted as a result of the exothermic transformations during the composting process. The purpose of this paper was neural modelling of the composting process of solid natural fertilisers with special attention paid to heat analysis. The paper highlights the problem of neural prediction of heat processes accompanying the composting of selected natural fertilisers. It focuses on the estimation of lost heat generated (which roughly corresponds to the thermal energy generated) as part of the exothermic reactions taking place during the process. The obtained results show that neural modelling can be effectively used in the process of estimating heat energy emitted and lost in the composting process. The model's analysis of sensitivity to input variables showed that the 6 most important parameters in the process of neural estimation of heat lost are (in the following order): T (temperature inside the bioreactor), SM (mineral substance mass), O 2 (% content of oxygen), V (stream volume), CO 2 (% content of carbon dioxide), and TIME (process duration).
