2. Detection of Global Anomalies on Distributed IoT Edges with Device-to-Device Communication

Abstract

Anomaly detection is an important function in IoT applications for finding outliers caused by abnormal events. Anomaly detection sometimes comes with high-frequency data sampling which should be carried out at Edge devices rather than Cloud. In this paper, we consider the case that multiple IoT devices are installed in a single remote site and that they collaboratively detect anomalies from the observations with device-to-device communications. For this, we propose a fully distributed collaborative scheme for training distributed anomaly detectors with Wireless Ad Hoc Federated Learning, namely "WAFL-Autoencoder". We introduce the concept of Global Anomaly which sample is not only rare to the local device but rare to all the devices in the target domain. We also propose a distributed threshold-finding algorithm for Global Anomaly detection. With our standard benchmark-based evaluation, we have confirmed that our scheme trained anomaly detectors perfectly across the devices. We have also confirmed that the devices collaboratively found thresholds for Global Anomaly detection with low false positive rates while achieving high true positive rates with few exceptions., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, ACM MobiHoc AIoT 2023 (accepted)

Abstract

Food insecurity is highly prevalent and linked to poorer diet and worse metabolic outcomes. Food insecurity can be stressful, and could elicit chronic psychological and physiological stress. In this study, we tested whether stress could be used to identify those at highest risk for worse diet and metabolic measures from food insecurity. Specifically, we hypothesized that cortisol (a physiological marker of stress) and perceived psychological stress would amplify the link between food insecurity and hyperpalatable food intake as well as metabolic measures. In a sample of 624 Black and White women aged 36-43 who participated in the NHLBI Growth and Health Study's midlife assessment, we assessed associations between food insecurity with hyperpalatable food intake (high fat + high sodium foods; high fat + high sugar foods; and high carbohydrate + high sodium foods), and metabolic measures (fasting glucose, insulin resistance, and waist circumference). We found that food insecurity was associated with higher levels of perceived stress (R2 = 0.09), and greater intake of high fat + high sugar (hyperpalatable) foods (R2 = 0.03). In those with higher cumulative cortisol (as indexed by hair cortisol), food insecurity was associated with higher levels of fasting glucose. Neither cortisol nor perceived stress moderated any other relationships, and neither variable functioned as a mediator in sensitivity analyses. Given these largely null findings, further research is needed to understand the role stress plays in the chronic health burdens of food insecurity.

Abstract

Building a large-scale training dataset is an essential problem in the development of medical image recognition systems. Visual grounding techniques, which automatically associate objects in images with corresponding descriptions, can facilitate labeling of large number of images. However, visual grounding of radiology reports for CT images remains challenging, because so many kinds of anomalies are detectable via CT imaging, and resulting report descriptions are long and complex. In this paper, we present the first visual grounding framework designed for CT image and report pairs covering various body parts and diverse anomaly types. Our framework combines two components of 1) anatomical segmentation of images, and 2) report structuring. The anatomical segmentation provides multiple organ masks of given CT images, and helps the grounding model recognize detailed anatomies. The report structuring helps to accurately extract information regarding the presence, location, and type of each anomaly described in corresponding reports. Given the two additional image/report features, the grounding model can achieve better localization. In the verification process, we constructed a large-scale dataset with region-description correspondence annotations for 10,410 studies of 7,321 unique patients. We evaluated our framework using grounding accuracy, the percentage of correctly localized anomalies, as a metric and demonstrated that the combination of the anatomical segmentation and the report structuring improves the performance with a large margin over the baseline model (66.0% vs 77.8%). Abstract

The purpose of this study was to quantitatively evaluate the performance of different simultaneous spatial and temporal regularizers in liver perfusion studies using low-dose dynamic contrast-enhanced computed tomography (DCE-CT). A digital liver phantom was used to simulate chronic liver disease (CLD) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) based on clinical data. Low-dose DCE-CT images were reconstructed using regularizers and a primal-dual algorithm. Subsequently, hepatic perfusion parameter (HPP) images were generated using a dual-input single-compartment model and linear least-squares method. In the CLD model, the effect of regularizers on the input functions (IFs) was examined by calculating the areas under the curves (AUCs) of the IFs, and the HPP estimation accuracy was evaluated by calculating the error and coefficient of variation (CV) between the HPP values obtained by the above methods and true values. In the HCC model, the ratios of the mean HPP values inside and outside the tumor were calculated. The AUCs of IFs decreased with increasing regularization parameter (RP) values. Although the AUC of arterial IF did not significantly depend on the regularizers, that of portal IF did. The error and CV were reduced using low-rank and sparse decomposition (LRSD). Total generalized variation (TGV) combined with LRSD (LTGV) was generally superior to the other regularizers in terms of HPP estimation accuracy and range of available RP values in both the CLD and HCC models. However, striped artifacts were more remarkable in the HPP images obtained by the TGV and LTGV than in those obtained by the other regularizers. The results suggest that the LRSD and LTGV are useful for improving the accuracy of HPP estimation using low-dose DCE-CT and for enhancing its practicality. Abstract

IntroductionAlthough adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been positively associated with adiposity, few studies have examined long-term race-specific ACE-BMI relationships.MethodsA Black and White all-women cohort (N=611; 48.6% Black) was followed between 1987 and 1997 from childhood (ages 9-10 years) through adolescence (ages 19-20 years) to midlife (ages 36-43 years, between 2015 and 2019). In these 2020-2022 analyses, the interaction between race and individual ACE exposures (physical abuse, sexual abuse, household substance abuse, multiple ACEs) on continuous BMI at ages 19-20 years and midlife was evaluated individually through multivariable linear regression models. Stratification by race followed as warranted at α=0.15.ResultsRace only modified ACE-BMI associations for sexual abuse. Among Black women, sexual abuse was significantly associated with BMI (Badjusted=3.24, 95% CI=0.92, 5.57) at ages 19-20 years and marginally associated at midlife (Badjusted=2.37, 95% CI= -0.62, 5.35); among White women, corresponding associations were null. Overall, having ≥2 ACEs was significantly associated with adolescent BMI (Badjusted=1.47, 95% CI=0.13, 2.80) and was marginally associated at midlife (Badjusted=1.45, 95% CI= -0.31, 3.22). This was similarly observed for physical abuse (adolescent BMI: Badjusted=1.23, 95% CI= -0.08, 2.54; midlife BMI: Badjusted=1.03, 95% CI= -0.71, 2.78), but not for substance abuse.ConclusionsDirect exposure to certain severe ACEs is associated with increased BMI among Black and White women. It is important to consider race, ACE type, and life stage to gain a more sophisticated understanding of ACE-BMI relationships. This knowledge can help strengthen intervention, prevention, and policy efforts aiming to mitigate the impacts of social adversities and trauma on persistent cardiometabolic health disparities over the lifecourse.
