Abstract

Tree automata based algorithms are essential in many fields in computer science such as verification, specification, program analysis. They become also essential for databases with the development of standards such as XML. In this paper, we define new classes of non deterministic tree automata, namely residual finite tree automata (RFTA). In the bottom-up case, we obtain a new characterization of regular tree languages. In the top-down case, we obtain a subclass of regular tree languages which contains the class of languages recognized by deterministic top-down tree automata. RFTA also come with the property of existence of canonical non deterministic tree automata.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION Obesity is the most common nutritional disorder in children from western or westernized countries, with a relevant impact on public health. Obese children have a high chance (40-80%) of [...], BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Little is known on the relationship between obesity and hydration levels in children. This study assessed whether and by which mechanisms hydration status differs between obese and non-obese children. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Hydration levels of 86 obese and 89 normal weight children (age: 7-11 years) were compared. Hydration was measured as the average free water reserve (FWR = urine output/24 h minus the obligatory urine output [total 24 h excreted solutes/97th percentile of urine osmolality of children with adequate water intake, that is, 830 mOsm/kg]) over 2 days. Three days of weighed dietary and fluid intakes were recorded. Non-parametric tests were used to compare variables that were skewed and to assess which variables correlated with hydration. Variables mediating the different hydration levels of obese and normal weight children were assessed by co-variance analysis. RESULTS: Obese children were less hydrated than normal weight peers [FWR= median (IQR): 0.80 (-0.80-2.80) hg/day vs 2.10 (0.10-4.45) hg/day, P < 0.02;32% of obese children vs 20% of non-obese peers had negative FWR, P < 0.001]. Body mass index (BMI) z-score (z-BMI) and water intake from fluids correlated with FWR (ρ = - 0.18 and 0.45, respectively, both P < 0.05). Water intake from fluids completely explained the different hydration between obese and normal weight children [FWR adjusted for water from fluids and z-BMI = 2.44 (0.44) hg vs 2.10 (0.50) hg, P = NS;B coefficient of co-variation between FWR (hg/day) and water intake from fluids (hg/day) = 0.47, P < 0.001]. CONCLUSIONS: Obese children were less hydrated than normal weight ones because, taking into account their z-BMI, they drank less. Future prospective studies are needed to explore possible causal relationships between hydration and obesity. Abstract

Federated Learning (FL) is a novel approach enabling several clients holding sensitive data to collaboratively train machine learning models, without centralizing data. The cross-silo FL setting corresponds to the case of few ($2$--$50$) reliable clients, each holding medium to large datasets, and is typically found in applications such as healthcare, finance, or industry. While previous works have proposed representative datasets for cross-device FL, few realistic healthcare cross-silo FL datasets exist, thereby slowing algorithmic research in this critical application. In this work, we propose a novel cross-silo dataset suite focused on healthcare, FLamby (Federated Learning AMple Benchmark of Your cross-silo strategies), to bridge the gap between theory and practice of cross-silo FL. FLamby encompasses 7 healthcare datasets with natural splits, covering multiple tasks, modalities, and data volumes, each accompanied with baseline training code. As an illustration, we additionally benchmark standard FL algorithms on all datasets. Our flexible and modular suite allows researchers to easily download datasets, reproduce results and re-use the different components for their research. Abstract

We theoretically study the impact of differential privacy on fairness in classification. We prove that, given a class of models, popular group fairness measures are pointwise Lipschitz-continuous with respect to the parameters of the model. This result is a consequence of a more general statement on accuracy conditioned on an arbitrary event (such as membership to a sensitive group), which may be of independent interest. We use the aforementioned Lipschitz property to prove a high probability bound showing that, given enough examples, the fairness level of private models is close to the one of their non-private counterparts.

INTRODUCTION Physical activity has a central role in weight control and in improving the quality of life and well being, with effects on long-term health and life expectancy, by inducing [...], BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship between postprandial nutrient balance, satiety and hormone changes induced by two different meals taken after a moderate intensity exercise bout. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Ten prepubertal obese children participated in the study. The experiment was designed as a cross-over study for repeated measures. Each test period lasted five consecutive hours during which the children were under medical supervision. The effects of two isocaloric meals were compared after a moderate intensity exercise (4 multiples of resting metabolic rate, 30 min, cycling): a low-fat/high-carbohydrate meal (meal A) and a high-fat/low-carbohydrate meal (meal B). Pre and postprandial (3 h) substrate oxidation, biochemical parameters, gastrointestinal hormone concentrations and appetite were measured. RESULTS: The main results were: (i) higher fat balance (5.1 [+ or -] 5.0 vs -5.0 ± 6.6g, P = 0.001) and lower carbohydrate balance after meal B than A (-9.7 ± 13.3 vs 11.3 ± 18.3 g, P < 0.01); (ii) higher energy balance after meal B than after meal A (5.9 ± 21.5 vs -13.9 ± 20.2 kcal, P < 0.05); (iii) higher plasma triglyceride concentrations (area under the curve) after meal B than after meal A (2962.5 ± 2095.8 mg * 180 min/dl vs -169.5 ± 1633.7 mg * 180 min/dl, P < 0.01); (iv) higher serum glucagon-like peptide-1 concentrations after meal B than after meal A (1101.5 ± 873.0 pmol * 180 min/l vs 478.8 [+ or -] 638.3 pmol * 180 min/l, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: After a bout of moderate intensity exercise, a meal with a high-fat/low-carbohydrate ratio had a less favorable metabolic impact than an isoenergetic, isoproteic low-fat/high-carbohydrate meal. Abstract

Background The Dissociative Experiences Scale-II (DES-II) is a self-report questionnaire that measures dissociative experiences such as derealization, depersonalization, absorption and amnesia. The DES-II has been prevalently used as a screening tool in patients suffering from psychotic disorders or schizophrenia. However, dissociative experiences can also be part of normal psychological life. Despite its popularity, the most problematic aspect of the DES-II is the inconsistency in its factor structure, which is probably due to the tendency to treat ordinal responses as responses on an interval scale, as it is assumed in the Classical Test Theory approach. In order to address issues related to the inconsistency of previous results, the aim of the present study was to collect new psychometric evidence to improve the properties of the DES-II using Rasch analysis, i.e. analyzing the functioning of the response scale. Methods Data were obtained on a sample composed by 320 Italian participants (122 inmates and 198 community-dwelling individuals) and were analyzed with the Rasch model. This model allows the estimation of participants’ level of dissociation, the degree of misfit of each item, the reliability of each item, and their measurement invariance. Moreover, Rasch estimation allows to determine the best response scale, in terms of response modalities number and their discriminant power. Results Three items of the scale had strong misfit. After their deletion, the resulting scale was composed by 25 items, which had low levels of misfit and high reliability, and showed measurement invariance. Participants tended to select more often lower categories of the response scale. Conclusions Results provided new knowledge on the DES-II structure and its psychometric properties, contributing to the understanding and measurement of the dissociation construct.

De Tommasi The goal of fast adaptations and modifications according to continuous change requests is common to all software engineering methodologies. In most cases, sooner or later this results in a mismatch between the software specification and the actual implementation with related disadvantages such as the impossibility of performing validations of related models. We present here an aspect of the digital business ecosystem concept that gives incentives for more responsible software engineering approaches in general by offering a platform for automatic composition of services and re-adaptation of the specifications based on actual changes. The main innovation is a natural language based modelling notation that enables ecosystems of companies to use software described in a high-level language that can also be understood by non-technical users.

Abstract

Aim of the study: Notwithstanding its clinical and empirical relevance, there is no consensus on how to conceptualize dissociation. This may be partly due to the conflicting results yielded on the factor structure of the gold-standard selfreport measure of dissociation (the Dissociative Experiences Scale-Revised; DES-II, Carlson and Putnam, 1993). In an attempt to advance research on this topic, we sought to explore the factorial structure of an Italian version of the DES-II. Material and methods: A sample of 320 subjects (122 inmates and 198 community participants) was administered the Italian version of the DES-II. Results: The Italian version of the DES-II showed good psychometric properties and replicated a two-factor structure. Items content seemed to support the distinction into two qualitatively different forms of dissociative experiences, described as detachment and compartmentalization phenomena. In line with the expectations, participants in the inmate sample reported higher rates of dissociative experiences than community participants, on both dimensions. Conclusions: This study provides further support for the validity of the Italian version of the DES-II for use with community and inmate samples. Furthermore, we corroborated previous evidence on a two-factor structure of the DES-II, which is consistent with theoretical assumptions describing two distinct, albeit overlapping, dissociative dimensions (i.e., detachment and compartmentalization).

Abstract

Gli autori presentano tre casi di carcinosarcoma del polmone osservati nel corso della loro esperienza di circa 15 anni. Dall'analisi della letteratura questa neoplasi risulta di raro riscontro ed è costituita da una neoplasia bifasica in cui ad una componente epiteliale si associa una componente sarcomatosa. La terapia d'elezione è attualmente quella chirurgica. La prognosi è infausta ed ipazienti decedono per l'insorgenza di metastasi precoci e diffuse. Dallo studio dei tre casi gli autori concludono che lo studio immunoistochimico è determinante per la diagonsi di carcinosarcoma.

Abstract

Despite growing information, questions still surround various aspects of post-stroke depression (PSD). The Italian multicenter observational study Destro was designed to help clarify in a large sample the frequency and clinical impact of PSD. A total of 53 centers consecutively admitted 1064 patients with ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke, assessing them periodically in the first 9 months after the event. Patients with depression were followed for two years. Depression was diagnosed on clinical examination, verbal (Beck Depression Inventory) and non-verbal rating systems (Visual Analog Mood Scale), identifying the nosographic condition attributable to the mental state. The patient's clinical history, residual independence, and post-ictus quality of life were also taken into account. PSD was detected in 383 patients (36 %), most of whom had minor depression (80.17 %), with dysthymia, rather than major depression and adaptation disorder. About 80% developed depression within three months of the stroke. Cases with later onset tended to have less severe symptoms. Risk factors were a history of depression, severe disability, previous stroke and female sex, but not the type and site of the vascular lesion. PSD was not correlated with any increase in mortality or cerebrovascular recurrences, but these patients had lower autonomy and quality of life ratings. In conclusion, patients should be close observed in the first few weeks after a stroke in order to check for depression,which is more likely in those with clear risk factors and may spoil their quality of life.

Abstract

Objective: The Italian multicenter observational study depression in stroke (DESTRO) aimed to identify risk factors for poststroke depression (PSD) and quantify the likelihood of it arising in various categories of patients. Method: Mood evaluation was performed in 1064 consecutive stroke patients by means of Beck Depression Inventory and Visual Analog Mood Scale. Depressive symptoms were classified using the DSM-IV and revised WHO criteria for depression in the course of a neurological disorder. Results: Poststroke depression was seen in 36% of the survivors, with dysthymia by far the predominant form (80.7%). Female sex, disability, previous cerebrovascular or depressive episodes were significantly associated with an increased risk of depression. Combinations of these factors raised the risk of PSD exponentially, from 24.3 to 89.1%. The site of the stroke did not come into the uni- or multivariate analysis. Conclusion.: At admission, it is possible to predict the likelihood of PSD and quantify the relative risk.
