Design practice and user research have a close and polemic relationship. It is known that user research may play the role of providing information that allows insights during the design process. On the other hand, professionals commonly report that structured data can limit creativity, or do not believe that the observation of everyday life can feed them novel and meaningful insights. This is common to observe, since the industry frequently uses design research to control risks, e.g. to maximize the chances of success of a product, rather than looking for creative insights. In America, researchers deal with many challenges to understand user experience. In addition to the known turbulent relationship between user research and design, many cultural issues also need to be addressed: users from distinct backgrounds express differently about their experiences due to cultural disparities that interfere in the way they express emotions; the market often tends to traditional uses of research, such as risk control; and many creative designers may feel oppressed when working with design guidelines that come from research. In this session, organizers report a series of experiences in Americas that facilitate the understanding of how to work with user research in this diverse continent.

This study examines the possibility, through an appraisals analysis, to qualify the experience of candidates for Master’s degrees in order to reduce their anxiety when it comes to choosing these programs. Using a theoretical and methodological approach based on Appraisals Theory, in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 people (interested in applying to Master’s in differ- ent areas), who reported anxiety when choosing their programs. Based on empirical results, it was possible to identify categories that were explored through the relationship with this theory. This analysis brought elements that have provided support for generating design guidelines in order to qualify the experiences of future Master’s degree students.

Emotional design usually refers to designing in order to evoke or prevent particular emotions among users. This workshop is not aimed at discussing solely users' emotions, it is also focused on understanding how the designer’s emotional experience might influence his/her work. Emotion and reasoning are not antonyms. Emotion can even help us to make better decisions, e.g., working as an adaptive sign of danger, when basic survival needs are threatened. In the tradition of cognitive research on decision-making, emotions can play an informational role, filling in the lack of information that people sometimes find when they need to make decisions. It is a heuristic mechanism, which is understood, in the cognitive sciences, as intuitive, since intuition is strongly based on emotion. Professionals in a variety of fields, such as design, medicine and law, might need to evaluate diverse situations and make quick decisions, grounded on impressions built in a few seconds of observation. These impressions have an emotional basis and are commonly based on personal and professional previous experiences, which are part of the mentioned heuristic process. The lack of information that would allow designers to logically analyse the problem is filled in with affective content. This way, the workshop goal is to facilitate designers to understand how their intuitive thinking can help (or ruin) their design.

Appraisal Theory, developed in the Psychological Sciences, states that emotion is a result of people's appraisals regarding the effect of a situation over their well-being. The theory has been discussed in the current literature in its relation to design, specifically the design and emotion field. Through a literature review of the Theory and the methods of studying lighting and emotion, a methodological framework is discussed to understand the user’s’ appraisals of lighted environment. Thus, the aim of this paper is to present and discuss a framework to understand the effect of lighting in retail stores on consumer’s appraisals and, consequently, their emotions, to be used in research and lighting design projects. Retail environment lighting projects that focus on evoking or preventing certain kinds of emotional experiences might be understood and developed in this research tradition in order to understand if the intended experience was achieved or not.

Attribute framing effect refers to the fact that different descriptions of the same element can cause different reactions in people. This paper describes an experiment that was aimed at investigating attribute framing on pro-environmental product decision-making, having the consumer ́s socially responsible behavior as a moderating effect. Framing effect was detected, but not as a universal response, since the type of evaluated product and the consumer ́s level of socially responsible behavior can interfere in people ́s judgements, by not producing the effect.

Apresenta-se neste artigo uma revisão crítica da literatura sobre métodos de pesquisa em Psicologia com uma orientação para estudos de consumo, acompanhada de exemplos da prática profissional dos autores junto a empresas que investigam o comportamento dos consumidores. A realidade de mercado exige que o pesquisador saiba escolher e empregar o método mais apropriado para o problema de pesquisa (exploratório, descritivo, experimental), o que institui a necessidade de classificar, descrever e comparar os diferentes métodos. A contínua transformação do consumidor e a constante evolução do mercado também tornam necessária a integração desses métodos em uma ferramenta essencial que oportunize a compreensão dos fenômenos em estudo. Conclui-se que o psicólogo deve saber diferenciar o emprego de diferentes métodos de pesquisa frente a demandas específicas de compreensão dos consumidores, em uma orientação que parte da prática profissional e não apenas de orientações metodológicas pré-estabelecidas com base na teoria. The present paper presents a critical review of the literature about research methods in psychology with a focus on consumer studies, followed by examples of the professional practice of the authors in consumer behavior research. The market reality urges the researcher to be able to choose and make use of the most appropriate method to solve the research problem (exploratory, descriptive, experimental), what creates the need to classify, describe and compare the different methods. The scenery and the consumer in constant transformation also brought the call for an integrative view of the different methods into an essential tool to the comprehension of the study phenomenon. The conclusion is that the psychologist should know how to differentiate the need to use each distinct research method when facing specific requirements to understand consumers based not only on pre-established methodological rules from theory, but also based on guidance from professional practice. En este artículo se presenta una revisión crítica de literatura sobre los métodos en investigación psicológica orientados para los estudios de consumo, acompañado por ejemplos de la práctica profesional de los autores en empresas con investigaciones sobre el comportamiento de los consumidores. El escenario actual del mercado exige por parte del investigador un conocimiento del método más eficaz para el problema de investigación (exploratorio, descriptivo, experimental), que abarca la necesidad de clasificar, describir y comparar los diferentes métodos. La constante transformación del escenario y del consumidor generó una necesidad de integrar esos métodos como herramientas esenciales. En conclusión el psicólogo deberá saber diferenciar la necesidad de implementar diferentes métodos de investigación para las empresas, debido a las demandas específicas de los consumidores orientados a partir de la práctica profesional y no solo en función de las orientaciones metodológicas preestablecidas en función de la teoría.

O efeito de configura??o de objetivos refere-se ao achado de que as pessoas respondem de maneiras distintas a diferentes configura??es de um mesmo material de comunica??o, revelando o car?ter limitadamente racional das decis?es do consumidor. Nessa dire??o, esta tese apresenta como objetivo geral investigar o efeito da configura??o de objetivos na tomada de decis?o do consumidor. Como objetivos espec?ficos, pretendeu-se mensurar o impacto da quantidade de informa??es sobre o efeito de configura??o de objetivos, bem como avaliar os efeitos moderadores das vari?veis envolvimento do consumidor e Need for Cognition (NfC) no efeito de configura??o de objetivos. Este estudo foi realizado em tr?s se??es, sendo a primeira uma se??o te?rica e as demais, se??es emp?ricas experimentais. Os instrumentos utilizados nas se??es emp?ricas foram quatro vers?es de textos promocionais sobre cart?es de cr?dito (configurados em ganhos e perdas, em quantidades de informa??es resumidas e expandidas), o Consumer Involvement for Credit Card Services Scale (desenvolvido para uso nesta tese) e a Escala Need for Cognition (Deliza, Rosenthal, & Costa, 2003). Os resultados apontaram que o efeito de configura??o de objetivos parece estar associado ? a??o da intui??o e que ele ocorre: (a) somente frente a quantidades de informa??es resumidas; (b) quando as prefer?ncias do consumidor, em termos de formas de pagamento, s?o diversas ao cart?o de cr?dito; e (c) entre os consumidores com alto grau de envolvimento com servi?os de cart?es de cr?dito (independente do grau de NfC do participante).
