Acanthamoeba castellanii is the causative pathogen of a severe eye infection, known as Acanthamoeba keratitis and a life-threatening brain infection, named granulomatous amoebic encephalitis. Current treatments are problematic and costly and exhibit limited efficacy against Acanthamoeba parasite, especially the cyst stage. In parallel to drug discovery and drug repurposing efforts, drug modification is also an important approach to tackle infections, especially against neglected parasites such as free-living amoebae: Acanthamoeba. In this study, we determined whether modifying pentamidine and doxycycline through chitosan-functionalized graphene oxide loading enhances their anti-amoebic effects. Various concentrations of doxycycline, pentamidine, graphene oxide, chitosan-functionalized graphene oxide, and chitosan-functionalized graphene oxide loaded with doxycycline and pentamidine were investigated for amoebicidal effects against pathogenic A. castellanii belonging to the T4 genotype. Lactate dehydrogenase assays were performed to determine toxic effects of these various drugs and nanoconjugates against human cells. The findings revealed that chitosan-functionalized graphene oxide loaded with doxycycline demonstrated potent amoebicidal effects. Nanomaterials significantly (p < 0.05) inhibited excystation and encystation of A. castellanii without exhibiting toxic effects against human cells in a concentration-dependent manner, as compared with other formulations. These results indicate that drug modifications coupled with nanotechnology may be a viable avenue in the rationale development of effective therapies against Acanthamoeba infections., Competing Interests: Declarations. Until the advent of phylogenomics, the atypical morphology of extant representatives of the insect orders Grylloblattodea (ice-crawlers) and Mantophasmatodea (gladiators) had confounding effects on efforts to resolve their placement within Polyneoptera. This recent research has unequivocally shown that these species-poor groups are closely related and form the clade Xenonomia. Nonetheless, divergence dates of these groups remain poorly constrained, and their evolutionary history debated, as the few well-identified fossils, characterized by a suite of morphological features similar to that of extant forms, are comparatively young. Notably, the extant forms of both groups are wingless, whereas most of the pre-Cretaceous insect fossil record is composed of winged insects, which represents a major shortcoming of the taxonomy. Here, we present new specimens embedded in mid-Cretaceous amber from Myanmar and belonging to the recently described species Aristovia daniili. The abundant material and pristine preservation allowed a detailed documentation of the morphology of the species, including critical head features. Combined with a morphological data set encompassing all Polyneoptera, these new data unequivocally demonstrate that A. daniili is a winged stem Grylloblattodea. This discovery demonstrates that winglessness was acquired independently in Grylloblattodea and Mantophasmatodea. Concurrently, wing apomorphic traits shared by the new fossil and earlier fossils demonstrate that a large subset of the former "Protorthoptera" assemblage, representing a third of all known insect species in some Permian localities, are genuine representatives of Xenonomia. Developing a convenient method to efficiently determine the size of nanoplastics in the environment is urgent in terms of ecological or human health protection. In this work, a novel strategy for discriminating the size of polystyrene (PS)-based nanoplastics was reported via regulating the radiative transition efficiency of NH 2 -UIO-66 (NU) with benzoic acid (BA) as the auxiliary ligand. The elaborately doped BA capped the defect sites and triggered nonradiative transition efficiency of NU. As a result, the formed composite (denoted as BA-NU) was more sensitive to interaction among neighboring NU and nanoplastics. The interaction between particles limited the rotation and vibration of the benzene ring within the BA-NU molecule, thus increasing the BA-NU fluorescence. The sensitivity of BA-NU on nanoplastics was well controlled by manipulating the doping contents of BA, leading to precisely tunable physicochemical properties for this structure. Deriving from the exquisitely designed nanostructures, the composite of BA-NU was successfully used to discriminate different size PS as an ultrasensitive turn-on probe. This work highlights the possibility of boosting the detection performance by regulating the main structure with guest molecules at the molecular level.

The family of coinage-metal-based cyclic trinuclear complexes exhibits abundant photophysical properties, promising for diverse applications. However, their utility in biochemistry is often hindered by large particle size and strong hydrophobicity. Meanwhile, the investigation into multi-photon excited luminescence within this family remained undocumented, limiting their potential in bio-imaging. Herein, we unveil the multi-photon excited luminescent properties of pyrazolate-based trinuclear gold(I) clusters, facilitated by excimeric gold(I)···gold(I) interactions, revealing a nonlinear optical phenomenon within this family. Furthermore, to address issues of poor biocompatibility, we employ electrospinning coupled with hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin as the matrix to fabricate a flexible, durable, transparent, and red emissive film with a photoluminescence quantum yield as high as 88.3%. This strategy not only produces the film with sufficient hydrophilicity and stability, but also achieves the downsizing of trinuclear gold(I) clusters from microscale to nanoscale. Following the instantaneous dissolution of the film in the media, the released trinuclear gold(I) nanoparticles have illuminated cells and bacteria through a real-time, non-toxic, multi-photon bio-imaging approach. A unique fluorescent sensing probe for UO 2 2+ detection was fabricated with terbium-based metal organic frameworks via introducing specific recognition sites (denoted as Tb-TDPAT). The newly formed Tb-TDPAT presented remarkable detection sensitivity and selectivity towards UO 2 2+ , surpassing the need for complex post-modification methods.

Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid potassium salt (PFOS) residues in ecosystems over long periods are of increasing concern and require a selective and stable optical probe for monitoring. Herein, two functional groups (-F and -NH 2 ) with opposite electronic modulation ability were introduced into Fe/Zn-BDC (denoted as Fe/Zn-BDC-F 4 and Fe/Zn-BDC-NH 2 , respectively) to tailor the coordination environment of the Fe metal center, further regulating the nanozyme activity efficiently. Notably, the peroxidase-like activity is related to the coordination environment of the nanozymes and obeys the following order Fe/Zn-BDC-F 4 > Fe/Zn-BDC > Fe/Zn-BDC-NH 2 . Based on the excellent peroxidase-like activity of Fe/Zn-BDC-F 4 and the characteristics of being rich in F atoms, a rapid, selective, and visible colorimetric method was developed for detecting PFOS with a detection limit of 100 nM. The detection mechanism was attributed to various interaction forces between Fe/Zn-BDC-F 4 and PFOS, including electrostatic interactions, Fe-S interactions, Fe-F bonds, and halogen bonds. This work not only offers new insights into the atomic-scale rational design of highly active nanozymes but also presents a novel approach to detecting PFOS in environmental samples.

Monitoring the residual dichlorvos (O,O-dimethyl-O-2,2-dichlorovinylphosphate, DDVP) in food has received extensive attention owing to its large consumption in agriculture. However, the previous sensing methods are not time-efficient enough due to the long incubation time for enzyme inhibition (tens of minutes to hours) or bottlenecked by the complicated procedures for senor fabrication. Herein, a novel sensing strategy is proposed based on the hydrolysis of DDVP into PO 4 3- . By using alkaline phosphatase for hydrolysis, a certain portion of DDVP was transformed to PO 4 3- within only 8 min. Then, the released PO 4 3- was detected by a fluorescent terbium metal-organic framework (Tb-MOF). The coordination of the naked P-O groups to the metal nodes of the Tb-MOF disturbed the antenna effects of its ligands. Thus, DDVP was quantified by the decrease of the fluorescence of Tb ions. Based on this method, DDVP residues on plum surfaces were collected by swabs and successfully detected. The recovery of DDVP was determined in the range from 105 % to 115 %, demonstrating the quantification accuracy of this method. The detection limit reached 4.7 μM, which was lower than the restricted amount in fruit set by the National Standard of China. Uranyl ions (UO 2 2+ ) are recognized as important indicators for monitoring sudden nuclear accidents. However, the interferences coexisting in the complicated environmental matrices impart serious constraints on the reliability of current on-site monitoring methods. Herein, a novel ratiometric method for the highly sensitive and selective detection of UO 2 2+ is reported based on a [Eu(diaminoterephthalic acid)] (Eu-DATP) metal-organic framework. Benefiting from the unique chemical structure of Eu-DATP, energy transfer from DATP to UO 2 2+ was enabled, resulting in the up-regulated fluorescence of UO 2 2+ and the simultaneous down-regulated fluorescence of Eu 3+ . The limit of detection reached as low as 2.7 nM, which was almost 2 orders of magnitude below the restricted limit in drinking water set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (130 nM). The Eu-DATP probe showed excellent specificity to UO 2 2+ over numerous interfering species, as the intrinsic emissions of UO 2 2+ were triggered. This unprecedentedly high selectivity is especially beneficial for monitoring UO 2 2+ in complicated environmental matrices with no need for tedious sample pretreatment, such as filtration and digestion. Then, by facilely equipping a Eu-DATP-based sampler on a drone, remotely controlled sampling and on-site analysis in real water samples were realized. The concentrations of UO 2 2+ were determined to be from 16.5 to 23.5 nM in the river water of the Guangzhou downtown area, which was consistent with the results determined by the gold-standard inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. This study presents a reliable and convenient method for the on-site analysis of UO 2 2+ .

The complex sample matrix and low environmental concentration make it challenging to effectively determine the polar glucocorticoids. In particular, a green, economical, and environmentally friendly method is urgently needed, since a large amount of extraction solvents, samples, and extraction materials have been commonly used to improve the sensitivity of the reported methods. In this study, a green and robust phenol and bismuth-based MOF of SU101 was mildly synthesized and fabricated as a brand new solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber. Only tiny amounts of SU101 and desorption solvents were employed to realize the high-efficiency enrichments of glucocorticoids from water samples. The detection performance of proposed SU101 fiber towards glucocorticoids was much superior to the single-component and multi-component commercial fibers. It indicated that SU101 fiber could be an excellent candidate for the enrichments of polar pharmaceuticals. After it was coupled with the instrument of high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS), the linear range of 5-10000 ng L -1 with detection limits low to 0.070-1.5 ng L -1 and satisfactory recoveries were achieved by the developed method. Cellular angiolipoma is a rare subtype of angiolipoma, with vascular density approaching 95%. This case report describes a 55-year-old female that presented for treatment of a mass in her left breast that had been tender to slightly painful on palpation for nearly 2 years The patient underwent surgical excision of the mass, which was pathologically confirmed as a cellular angiolipoma. As of the 3-year follow-up, the patient reported no recurrence of the lesion. Whether a tire crumb rubber (TCR) playground would expose children to potentially harmful chemicals such as heavy metals is an open question. The released metals available for pickup on the surface of TCR tiles was studied by accelerated 2-year aging of the TCRs in the NIST-SPHERE (National Institute of Standards and Technology Simulated Photodegradation via High Energy Radiant Exposure). The dermal contact was mimicked by a method of composite surface wiping from US Environmental Protection Agency throughout the weathering process. The surface release of ten most concerned harmful metals (Be, Cr, Cu, As, Se, Cd, Sb, Ba, Tl, Pb) was monitored through the course of aging. The cumulative release of Cu, As, Tl, and Sb reached potentially harmful levels at various times within 3 years, although only Cr was found at a harmful level on the surface of the tiles. Sepsis-induced myocardial depression (SIMD) is common in pediatric intensive care units and seriously threatens children's health. Recently, long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been showed to play important roles in various diseases; however, its role in SIMD is unclear. In this study, we used lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated rats and H9c2 cardiomyocytes to mimic SIMD in vivo and in vitro. We found that the expression of a novel lncRNA, we named lncRNA-AABR07066529.3, was elevated in LPS-induced rat heart tissue and H9c2 cardiomyocytes. In addition, LPS-induced inflammation, apoptosis, and pyroptosis were significantly exacerbated after lncRNA-AABR07066529.3 knockdown. Moreover, we found that myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88) was upregulated in LPS-treated groups and was inhibited by lncRNA-AABR07066529.3. Besides, MyD88 knockdown abolished lncRNA-AABR07066529.3 silencing effects on inflammation, apoptosis, and pyroptosis induced by LPS in H9c2 cardiomyocytes. In our study, we found lncRNA-AABR07066529.3 exerted protective effects on LPS-induced cardiomyocytes by regulating MyD88 and might serve as a potential treatment target for SIMD., (© 2023 The Authors. Introduction: Hemicellulose is an important component in lignocellulose materials, which is second only to cellulose, accounting for 15%-35% of the dry weight of plants. In the current situation of energy shortage, making full use of lignocellulose materials to produce fuel ethanol has become an important way to solve the energy problem. Xylanase plays a crucial role in the utilization of hemicellulose. It is a necessary means to reduce the cost of hemicellulose utilization by improving the activity of xylanase. Moreover, most naturally xylanases are mesophilic enzymes, which limits their industrial application. Methods: In this study, Myceliophthora thermophila was used to produce xylanases and a thermostable mutant M 2103 was obtained by atmospheric room temperature plasma (ARTP) mutagenesis. The research work started with exploring the effects of ARTP mutagenesis on the antioxidase system [superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), and antioxidant capacity (AOC)] of M. thermophile , and found that superoxide dismutase activity increased by 221.13%, and polyphenol oxidase activity increased by 486.04% as compared with the original strain when the implantation time was 300 s. So as to determine the conditions for subsequent mutagenesis. Results and Discussion: For the mutant M 2103, the reaction temperature for xylanase production remained stable in the range of 70°C-85°C. Its optimum temperature was 75°C, which was 15°C higher than that of the original strain. And its xylanase activity increased by 21.71% as compared with the original strain. M 2103 displayed a significantly higher relative xylanase activity than the original strain in the acidic (pH 4.0-7.0) range, and the xylanase activity was relatively stable in the pH range of 6.0-8.5. Purpose: The present study was performed to detect the prevalence of myopia among primary-school students in Xi'an, north-western of China., Methods: The present study was a school-based study with students aged from 6 to 13 years old. All the individuals underwent ophthalmological examination and spherical equivalent (SE) of refractive error were measured with non-cycloplegic refraction. Myopia was defined as a SE of ≤ -0.5 diopters (D), and further divided into three stratified groups based on SE: low myopia (≤ -0.5 to >-3.0 D), moderate myopia (≤ -3.0 to >-6.0 D), and high myopia (≤ -6.0 D). Relative risk factors, including age, sex, grade and ethnicity were investigated using questionnaire., Results: A total of 4,680 individuals were eligible for this survey and 4,654 (99.4% participation rate) were finally included (51.2% boys). The mean age of participants was 8.756 ± 1.727 years. The whole city-level prevalence of total myopia was 57.1% (95% CI: 55.7-58.6%). Additionally, the prevalence of low, moderate, and high myopia was 45.0% (95% CI: 43.5-46.4%), 11.1% (95% CI: 10.2-12.0%), and 1.0% (95% CI: 0.7-1.3%), respectively. Moreover, grade (education level) instead of age, sex and ethnicity was the most essential risk factor for prevalence of overall myopia (OR = 1.844, 95% CI: 1.605-2.119), and an increase of prevalence by 84.4% per grade was seen. Furthermore, similar associations of grade were significant with low myopia (OR = 1.613, 95% CI: 1.385-1.877) and moderate myopia (OR = 2.186, 95% CI: 1.693-2.823), meanwhile, prevalence of low myopia and moderate myopia demonstrated an increase of prevalence by 61.3 and 118.6% per grade, respectively. Despite the excellent luminescent properties of lanthanide clusters (LnCs), their suprastructures that inherit their characteristic luminescent properties are scarcely reported. Herein, novel and highly luminescent suprastructures are synthesized via a two-step assembly method to incorporate LnCs in covalent organic frameworks (COFs). COFs are pre-synthesized and decorated with rigid anchoring groups on their nanochannel walls, which provide one-dimensional confined spaces for the subsequent in situ assembly of luminescent LnCs. The confined LnCs are termed nanoparticles (NPs) to distinguish them from the pure LnCs. Secondary micropores with predictable sizes are successfully formed between the walls of the nanochannels and the orderly aligned NPs therein. By using a small organic ligand that can efficiently sensitize Ln(iii) cations in the assembly processes, the obtained composites show high quantum yields above 20%. The fluorescence can even be effectively maintained across nine pH units. The secondary micropores further enable the unambiguous discrimination of six methinehalides and ultrasensitive detection of uranyl ions. A novel composite was fabricated by hybridizing terbium 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic MOF (TB-MOF) with Cx[6]. The obtained composite TB-Cx[6] possessed long-term stability and dispersion stability and was used for on-site analysis of the anti-COVID-19 disinfection product Prednis via a combing remote sampling technique.

Obesity, which has unknown pathogenesis, can increase the frequency and seriousness of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). This study evaluated effect of Huayu Qutan Recipe (HQR) pretreatment on myocardial apoptosis induced by AMI by regulating mitochondrial function via PI3K/Akt/Bad pathway in rats with obesity. For in vivo experiments, 60 male rats were randomly divided into 6 groups: sham group, AMI group, AMI (obese) group, 4.5, 9.0 and 18.0 g/kg/d HQR groups. The models fed on HQR with different concentrations for 2 weeks before AMI. For in vitro experiments, the cardiomyocytes line (H9c2) was used. Cells were pretreated with palmitic acid (PA) for 24 h, then to build hypoxia model followed by HQR-containing serum for 24 h. Related indicators were also detected. In vivo, HQR can lessen pathohistological damage and apoptosis after AMI. In addition, HQR improves blood fat levels, cardiac function, inflammatory factor, the balance of oxidation and antioxidation, as well as lessen infarction in rats with obesity after AMI. Meanwhile, HQR can diminish myocardial cell death by improving mitochondrial function via PI3K/Akt/Bad pathway activation. In vitro, HQR inhibited H9c2 cells apoptosis, improved mitochondrial function and activated the PI3K/Akt/Bad pathway, but effects can be peripeteiad by LY294002. Myocardial mitochondrial dysfunction occurs following AMI and can lead to myocardial apoptosis, which can be aggravated by obesity. HQR can relieve myocardial apoptosis by improving mitochondrial function via the PI3K/Akt/Bad pathway in rats with obesity., (© 2022 The Authors. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are highly promising to be applied in light-emitting, chemosensing, and other cutting-edge domains. Herein, we successfully fabricate high-quality full-color CQDs under unprecedentedly low temperature and pressure (85°C, 1.88 bar). Stable and narrow fluorescent emissions ranging from blue to green and red light were realized by simple amine engineering, which were further mixed into white-light CQDs with the absolute photoluminescent quantum yield reaching 19.2%. The average mass yield of the CQDs reached 69.0%. The optical performances demonstrated that the CQDs possessed uniform luminescent centers and dominant radiative decay channels. Component analysis further suggested that dehydrated condensation between carboxyl and amine groups directed the growth of the CQDs. By utilizing the CQDs, full-color light-emitting diodes and logic gate sensors were developed. The knowledge of high-pressure behavior of LiH is significant for the validation of fundamental theoretical models and applications in thermonuclear materials and potential energy supplies. The compressibility of 7 LiH under isentropic compression at high pressure was investigated experimentally and theoretically. The experimental technique for quasi-isentropic compression with low-density materials was developed using the magnetocumulative generator CJ-100 and x-ray flash radiography. The x-ray images and extracted interface of the sample target in dynamic flash radiography experiments were obtained. According to each interface size of the target both before and after compression, the compression ratio of 7 LiH and reference material aluminum was obtained. The density of the reference and using its known isentropic curve provide the pressure in the reference. The pressure in 7 LiH was deduced from the pressure in the reference and using the calculated gradient correction factor. The quasi-isentropic data point at 438 GPa was obtained experimentally. A semiempirical three-term complete equation of state was constructed and validated for 7 LiH using the theory of Mie-Grüneisen-Debye with experimental data from the literature. The quasi-isentrope data point is reasonably consistent with the theoretical results. The quasi-isentropic experimental techniques and results broaden the existing research scope and are practical and helpful to further validate theoretical models in the future.

The design and synthesis of novel high-performance solid phase microextraction (SPME) coatings towards organic pollutants with diverse chemical properties is still a challenge in sample preparation. Herein, a stable chitosan cross-linked graphene oxide (GOCS) aerogel was reported as a novel coating for solid phase microextraction. The interpenetrated meso- and macropores ensured the large surface area and high accessibility of the functional groups across the aerogel, resulting in high extraction performance towards target hydrophobic pollutants. The extraction capacities of the GOCS-coated SPME fiber towards analytes (e.g. polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, organophosphorus pesticides, organochlorine pesticides, pyrethroids, and polychlorinated biphenyls) were about 0.5-13 times as high as those obtained by the commercial fibers (30 μm polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), 65 μm polydimethylsiloxane/divinylbenzene (PDMS/DVB)), which was attributed to the hydrophobic, π-π, halogen bond and hydrogen bond interactions between the coating and the analytes. Under the optimized extraction conditions, superior analytical performances for PAHs were achieved with a wide linearity (0.5-1000 ng L -1 ), high enhancement factors (311-3740), and the low limits of detection (0.03-1.28 ng L -1 ). Owing to the ubiquitous occurrence and chemotoxicity of BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene), the development of stable and accurate analysis methods that can assess environment risks and can generate monitoring data rapidly is urgent. In this work, a new strategy was proposed for efficient detection of BTEX. By creatively utilizing thermal deposition method, a robust SPME fiber was fabricated, where the γCD-MOF acted as the adsorbent, while PDMS functionalized as the adhesive and protective coating. Benefiting from the protection of PDMS, the γCD-MOF fiber presented significantly better extraction performance and exhibited long-term structural stabilities in aqueous or methanol samples up to a week. The stable and improved properties of γCD-MOF demonstrated that the PDMS protected the MOF components from the adverse effects of solvent. The detection limits of PDMS modified γCD-MOF fiber for BTEX was as low as 0.13-0.29 ng L -1 that accompanied with wide linear range of 1-1000 ng L -1 , which was significantly superior to commercial PDMS fiber and other MOF-based fibers. Besides, the feasibility of the proposed method was verified by the quantitative determination of BTEX in real water samples. The monitoring of mercury and fluoride ions (Hg 2+ and F - ) has aroused wide concerns owing to the high toxicity of Hg 2+ and the duplicitous nature of F - to human health. As far as we known, more than 100 million people in poverty-stricken areas are still at high risk of being over-exposed to Hg 2+ and F - via drinking water. Simple and cost-effective luminescent methods are highly promising for on-site water monitoring in rural areas. However, the development of multipurpose luminescent probes that are accurate and sensitive remains challenging. Herein, a new strategy for rationally designing a multipurpose ratiometric probe is present. The obtained probe is consisted of two emission units with energy transfer between them, which exhibit high coordination affinities to the two coexisted toxic targets (Hg 2+ and F - ), respectively. Thus, two distinct routes for efficiently modulating the energy transfer in the probe are present to trigger the responses to the two targets in sequence. By detecting the shift of the emission color with a smartphone, an on-site water monitoring method is successfully established with the detection limits as low as 2.7 nM for Hg 2+ and 1.9 μM for F - . Aim: To analyze the clinical characteristics of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) in children below 3 years of age in order to improve the understanding of the disease, avoid misdiagnosis, and achieve early diagnosis and treatment., Methods: The study retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 19 patients diagnosed with HT in the first three years of life., Results: The patients (12 female, 7 male) had an average age of 26.1 ± 8.2 months (range 10-36 months). At presentation, one patient had euthyroidism, ten had hypothyroidism, seven had subclinical hypothyroidism, and one had hyperthyroidism. The most common reasons for doctor's visits were thyroid enlargement (21.1%), global developmental delay (21.1%), and routine thyroid function tests in patients with type 1 diabetes (26.3%). Sixteen patients provided follow-up data, and the mean follow-up time was 23.31 ± 16.44 months (range 1-48 months). In the hypothyroidism group, one patient stopped levothyroxine (LT4) treatment after 2 months; the remaining patients had been treated with LT4 since their diagnosis. In the subclinical hypothyroidism group, one patient whose thyroid function returned to normal after 1 month of being diagnosed was not treated. The remaining patients received LT4 treatment at their diagnosis or during follow-up. The patient with hyperthyroidism was treated with methimazole after diagnosis, but treatment was discontinued 11 months later and LT4 was initiated 26 months after diagnosis. One in four patients with global developmental delay approached normal mental development after LT4 treatment. Four in six patients with short stature achieved height catch-up., Conclusion: At their initial HT diagnosis, most of the children showed hypothyroidism or subclinical hypothyroidism. Children with global developmental delay require continual screening, even if the thyroid function is normal after birth, to determine whether they have HT-induced hypothyroidism. Herein, a new strategy to increase the sensitivity of a lanthanide metal-organic framework (Ln-MOF) to UO 2 2+ was proposed by using polymeric ligands. By utilizing [Tb(1,3,5-benzenetrisbenzoate)]n (Tb-TBT) MOF as the host, preloaded 2-vinyl terephthalic acid (VTP) was polymerized in situ, which produced a novel fluorescent composite denoted as PVTP⊂Tb-TBT. Benefiting from the coordination of PVTP to the Tb nodes, the polymeric chains performed both as molecular scaffolds that improved the water stability of the framework and as additional antennae that sensitized the photoluminescence of the Tb nodes. More importantly, the detection sensitivity and selectivity of PVTP⊂Tb-TBT to UO 2 2+ were much improved compared to those of Tb-TBT. Detailed characterizations indicated that the incorporation of PVTP efficiently enriched UO 2 2+ in the probe, which promoted the energy dissipation to UO 2 2+ . Besides, UO 2 2+ was also supposed to release PVTP from PVTP⊂Tb-TBT and, thus, exposed the open metal sites to water molecules, which interrupted the sensitization effect of PVTP and induced a nonradiative energy dissipation. A limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.75 nm was recorded by suspending the PVTP⊂Tb-TBT probe in a water sample, far below the limit in drinking water set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (130 nm). Furthermore, a remotely controlled sampling and an on-site analysis of real water samples were realized by facilely loading PVTP⊂Tb-TBT on thin films (TFs). The LOD for UO 2 2+ was 2.5 nm by using the TFs. This study reports a new strategy for boosting the sensitivity and selectivity of Ln-MOF to monitor UO 2 2+ and expands the application of the strategy to an on-site analysis.

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) has the main manifestations of pulmonary edema in the early stage and characteristic alveolar obstruction and microvascular dysplasia in the late stage, which may be caused by structural and functional destruction of the lung epithelial barrier. The Claudin family is the main component of tight junction and plays an important role in regulating the permeability of paracellular ions and solutes. Claudin-18 is the only known tight junction protein solely expressed in the lung. The lack of Claudin-18 can lead to barrier dysfunction and impaired alveolar development, and the knockout of Claudin-18 can cause characteristic histopathological changes of BPD. This article elaborates on the important role of Claudin-18 in the development and progression of BPD from the aspects of lung epithelial permeability, alveolar development, and progenitor cell homeostasis, so as to provide new ideas for the pathogenesis and clinical treatment of BPD.

Background: Post-stroke depression (PSD) is one of the most common stroke complications with high morbidity. Researchers have done much clinical research on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatment, but very little research on diagnosis. Based on the thought of combination of disease and syndrome, this study will establish a unified and objective quantitative diagnosis model of TCM syndromes of PSD, so as to improve the clinical diagnosis and treatment of PSD., Objective: First: To establish a unified and objective quantitative diagnosis model of TCM syndromes in PSD under different disease courses, and identify the corresponding main, secondary, and concurrent symptoms, which are based on the weighting factor of each TCM symptom. Second: To find out the relationship between different stages of PSD and TCM syndromes. Clarify the main syndrome types of PSD under different stages of disease. Reveal the evolution and progression mechanism of TCM syndromes of PSD., Methods and Analysis: This is a retrospective study of PSD TCM diagnosis. Currently, nano-titanium dioxide (nTiO 2 ) is considered an emerging environmental contaminant. Bottlenecked by the traditional destructive and lethal sampling methods, nTiO 2 's effect in living plants is poorly investigated. Here, in vivo tracing of endogenous salicylic acids at regular intervals was performed by using solid phase microextraction (SPME) technique for evaluating the effects of nTiO 2 on plants. By planting aloe in soil containing varying amounts of nTiO 2 , the titanium (Ti) element accumulated in the leaves to concentrations and then reached the maximum of 1.1 ± 0.4 μg/g after nTiO 2 exceeding 0.1 g/kg. The levels of salicylic acid (SA) and acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) were up-regulated upon the exposure to nTiO 2 , while were positively correlated to the contents of Ti. Moreover, the increased malondialdehyde, decreased total superoxide dismutase and fluctuated glutathione along with the addition of nTiO 2 demonstrated the oxidative stress caused by nTiO 2 . Meanwhile, apparent growth indicators including leaf elongation, plant fresh weight and root development were influenced, which further confirmed the toxicity of nTiO 2 imparted on aloe. A positive correlation between the species richness and morphological diversity of some organisms has been found in almost all studies at the local community scale. However, this documented relationship has not always been consistent because of diverse niches and the status of an organism in an ecosystem. Global taxon sampling, new morphological approaches, and consideration of more taxonomic categories other than species level are possible methods to further investigate this contradiction. In this study, we proposed a new paradigm for higher taxa biodiversity analysis based on a cosmopolitan dataset. A total of 1106 species from around the world representing all subfamilies and 33% genera of Buprestidae (jewel beetles) were selected to test the correlation between morphological diversity (MD) and genus/species richness (GR/SR) among subfamilies. The MD was quantified by the contours of the pronotum and elytron in dorsal view based on a geometric morphometric approach. The positive correlation between MD and GR was found in all test combinations, but was irrelevant in the species-level test. Interestingly, the correlation between MD and GR was higher than MD and SR in both pronotum and elytron measurements. Additionally, the MD of the pronotum is obviously higher than the MD of the elytron. Our results demonstrate that the geometric morphometric approach could quite accurately reveal diversity patterns of the family Buprestidae. Future studies on different groups, using more characters, more analyses and detailed biological interpretations, are required to fully understand the relationship between MD and SR.

The photoluminescent (PL) properties of lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) are intrinsically subtle to water molecules, which remains the major challenge that severely limits their applications as fluorescent probes in aqueous samples. Herein novel composite fluorescent probes were prepared by growing Ln-MOFs (Tb-MOF, Eu-MOF, and Tb/Eu-MOF) on carboxylated porous graphene oxide (PGO-COOH). The 3D thorny composites presented significantly longer fluorescent lifetimes and higher quantum yields than that of the bare Ln-MOFs and exhibited long-term PL stabilities in aqueous samples up to 15 days. The stable and improved PL properties demonstrated that the highly hybrid composite structures protected the MOF components from the adverse effects of water. Furthermore, the unexpected antenna effect of the PGO-COOH substrate on Ln 3+ was supposed to be another reason for the improved PL properties. The composites present ultralow detection limits as low as 5.6 nM for 2,4-dinitrotoluene and 2.3 nM for dipicolinic acid as turn-off and ratiometric fluorescent probes, respectively, which was attributed to the incoporation of PGO-COOH that dramatically enahnced inner filter effects and effectively protected the energy transfer process in the MOF components from the interference of the surrounding water. This work presents an effective strategy for creating ultrasensitive and stable fluorescent probes based on Ln-MOFs for applications in aqueous samples.

The current production from the alkaline methanol electro-oxidation reaction does not reach a steady state on a smooth platinum catalyst under potentiostatic conditions. We investigated two possible explanations for this phenomenon: changes on the catalyst surface and changes in the solution near the electrode. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy experiments were conducted to evaluate the adsorbed species on the catalyst surface and a simulation model was set up to describe the changes of concentrations inside the solution. Linear- and bridge-bonded carbon monoxide are the only organic compounds which can be detected by in situ spectroscopy at fixed potentials, but their amount does not increase over time. The simulation shows that the consumption of hydroxide ions and production of carbonaceous species during alkaline oxidation causes a local pH shift near the catalyst surface. Assuming a one-electron transfer as the limiting step, this pH shift was found to contribute to the observed current loss at a potential of 0.77 V.

We report a simple but detailed solution 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic study of atomically precise neutral Au 25 (SR) 18 0 (SR = alkyl thiolate) clusters. The paramagnetic 13 C Knight shift of alkyl chain carbons, which is proportional to the local electron spin density, exhibits an electron spin delocalization that exponentially decays along the alkyl chain. The magnitude and decay constant of the observed electron spin delocalization, although largely independent of alkyl chain length, depend on where, that is, "in" versus "out" ( vide infra ) position, the alkyl chain is bound, in agreement with density functional theory calculations. Notably, the determined position-dependent decay constants, 1.70/Å and 0.41/Å for "in" and "out" ligands, respectively, not only could have important ramifications in molecular spintronics but are also comparable to measured decay constants in molecular electrical conductance of alkyl chains, potentially offering an alternative, simple method for estimating the latter. Moreover, the negative intercept temperatures of linear fits of reciprocal 13 C (as well its bound 1 H) Knight shift versus temperature strongly suggest the existence of local ferrimagnetism in individual Au 25 (SR) 18 0 clusters.

Stimulus-responsive double-ligand luminol-Eu-IPA infinite coordination polymer nanoparticles (luminol-Eu-IPA CPNPs) were prepared as a ratiometric fluorescence probe for highly selective detecting Hg 2+ . The CPNPs were constituted of Eu 3+ as the nuclear metal coordinated by isophthalic acid (IPA) together with luminol as an auxiliary ligand. The photoinduced electron transfer (PET) occurring from IPA to luminol prevented the antenna effect between IPA and Eu 3+ , leading to the quench fluorescence of Eu 3+ under light excitation. As Hg 2+ has a high affinity to N atom of luminol and the spin-orbit coupling effect, spectroscopically and magnetically silent properties, the fluorescence intensity of luminol was quenched. Meanwhile, the PET effect between luminol and IPA was interrupted under the presence of Hg 2+ . This process resulted in a significant decrease in the fluorescence intensity of luminol and a significant increase in the fluorescence intensity of Eu 3+ . Therefore, the fluorescence ratiometric detection of Hg 2+ was performed by monitoring the ratio of the fluorescence at 617 nm of Eu 3+ to that at 430 nm of luminol. The linear range was from 0.05 to 20 μM with a detection limit as low as 13.2 nM Hg 2+ (S/N = 3). Due to the fluorescence of luminol be quenched and the effect of PET be disrupted simultaneously, the probe exhibiting excellent detection selectively can avoid false positive signals, which was demonstrated for monitoring mercury ions in real water samples. Homogeneous platinum alloy nanoparticles (NPs) are of great interest to the electrocatalytic community for potential use in various fuel cell electrodes. Increasing the surface area available per unit mass by decreasing the size of NPs while maintaining or improving activity is one of the key tasks of fuel cell catalysis. Achieving both in a synthesis of multielement NPs is still a challenging workup. In this investigation, we report the use of glycine as a size control agent to make ultrasmall homogeneous trimetallic PtNiCu NPs within 2-5 nm range. The mechanistic roles of dimethyl formamide (DMF), formaldehyde, water, and glycine are explored to understand the formation of these small NPs. Interestingly, it was observed that these PtNiCu NPs exhibited substantially enhanced mass activities toward the electro-oxidation of ethanol in comparison to commercial Pt black.

A fluorometric method is described for the determination of thrombin. Polymer nanoparticles containing the luminol-terbium(III) complex (luminol-Tb) were prepared where luminol acts as the bridging ligand, and Tb(III) acts as the central metal ion. Thrombin possesses a large number of electrons donating groups that coordinate with luminol-Tb. Following coordination, the rigidity of the linker is increased, and this decreases the non-radiative decay rate and induces an increase in fluorescence intensity at 430 nm. Hence, thrombin can be fluorometrically determined. The detection limit of thrombin is as low as 3.5 pM (at an SNR of 3). This is about 10 times lower than assays using an aptamer. The method was applied in the determination of thrombin in human serum via the standard addition method and gave satisfying results. Objective: Surgery is indicated when antibiotic treatment fails in pyogenic spondylodiscitis, which is caused by pathogens such as the Staphylococcus species. The aim of the present study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of the oblique lateral interbody fusion (OLIF) corridor approach combined with posterior pedicle screw fixation for treating pyogenic spondylodiscitis., Methods: This was a retrospective case series study. A total of 11 patients with an average age of 60.7 years (range, 40-70 years; 10 males and 1 females) with lumbar pyogenic spondylodiscitis who underwent single-stage debridement and reconstruction using the OLIF corridor combined with posterior pedicle screw fixation were recruited in our study from June 2016 to July 2017. All patients had single-level pyogenic spondylodiscitis between T 12 and L 5 . The baseline data, perioperative outcomes (operative time, intra-operative blood loss, and intra-operative complication), postoperative laboratory tests (erythrocyte sedimentation rate [ESR], C-reactive protein [CRP], white blood count [WBC], and tissue culture results), long-term complications (recurrence, fixation failure, and bony non-fusion rates), and duration of antibiotic administration were reviewed. Outcomes evaluated using a variety of scales including visual analog scale (VAS) score and Oswestry disability index (ODI), were compared pre-operatively and post-operatively., Results: The mean follow-up period of time was 18.3 months. The average operative time and intra-operative blood loss were 217.0 ± 91.91 min and 220.9 ± 166.10 mL, respectively. There were no intra-operative complications, except in 1 patient who encountered somatosensory evoked potentials changes and 1 patient who had motor evoked potentials changes, both without post-surgery neurological deficits. Causative organisms were identified in 4 patients: Staphylococcus aureus in 1 patient and Streptococcus in 3 patients. At approximately 8.8 weeks after surgery, WBC, CRP, and ESR had returned to normal levels. All patients were pain free with no recurring infection. There was no fixation failure during follow up. Solid bony fusions were observed in all cases within 6 months. At the final follow up, the mean VAS (0.6 ± 0.69) and ODI (14.4 ± 4.27) were significantly lower than those before surgery (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: One-stage debridement with autogenous iliac bone graft through the OLIF corridor combined with posterior pedicle screw fixation is effective and safe for single-level spontaneous lumbar pyogenic spondylodiscitis after antibiotic treatment fails., (© 2019 The Authors. Efficient electro-oxidation of formic acid, methanol, and ethanol is challenging owing to the multiple chemical reaction steps required to accomplish full oxidation to CO 2 . Herein, a ternary CoPtAu nanoparticle catalyst system is reported in which Co and Pt form an intermetallic L1 0 -structure and Au segregates on the surface to alloy with Pt. The L1 0 -structure stabilizes Co and significantly enhances the catalysis of the PtAu surface towards electro-oxidation of ethanol, methanol, and formic acid, with mass activities of 1.55 A/mg Pt , 1.49 A/mg Pt , and 11.97 A/mg Pt , respectively in 0.1 m HClO 4 . The L1 0 -CoPtAu catalyst is also stable, with negligible degradation in mass activities and no obvious Co/Pt/Au composition changes after 10 000 potential cycles. Objective: To investigate the value of quantitative dynamic contrast enhancement MR imaging (DCE-MRI) parameters in the prediction and evaluation of the response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in patients with malignant sinonasal tumors by comparing the parameter values before and after chemotherapy. Methods: DCE-MRI was performed in 14 patients (6 male cases, 8 female cases, 16-83 years) with malignant sinonasal tumors before chemotherapy in Beijing Tongren Hospital from January 2012 to December 2013 in which DCE-MRI was performed in 8 patients on the 7th, 21st and 42nd days after chemotherapy. The values of quantitative parameter including K(trans), K(ep), and V(e) of the tumor were assessed and the change rate of these quantitative parameter values after chemotherapy was calculated. Results: Response to chemotherapy of the tumor was found in 11 patients with malignant sinonasal tumors,whereas no response to chemotherapy of the tumor was confirmed in 3 patients. K(trans) ((0.75±0.28)/min) and K(ep) ((3.23±1.48)/min) values of the tumor before chemotherapy in patients with response to chemotherapy were significantly bigger than those ((0.43±0.41)/min, (1.34±0.42)/min) in patients with no response to chemotherapy (all P< 0.01).There was no significant difference in V(e) values between two groups ( P= 0.165). Compared with K(trans) values of the tumor before chemotherapy,the change rate of K(trans) values decreased more than 40% on the 7th,21st and 42nd days after chemotherapy in the patients with treatment response,whereas the change rate did not decrease significantly in the patients without treatment response. Conclusion: The bigger K(trans) and K(ep) values of the tumor before chemotherapy,the better the treatment response of the tumor to chemotherapy.

We present a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) Encoder-Decoder model to generate Chinese pop music lyrics to hide secret information. In particular, on a given initial line of a lyric, we use the LSTM model to generate the next Chinese character or word to form a new line. In so doing, we generate the entire lyric from what has been generated so far. Using common lyric formats and rhymes we extracted, we generate lyrics embedded with secret information to meet the visual and pronunciation requirements. We carry out experiments and theoretical analysis, and show that lyrics generated by our method offer higher embedding capacities for steganography, which also look more natural than the existing steganography methods based on text generations.

In this study, acorn starch was investigated as a new material for fermenting production of citric acid by using a tannin tolerance mutant strain Aspergillus niger AA120. The mutant A. niger AA120 was obtained by initially atmospheric pressure plasma at room temperature (ARTP) mutagenesis and then tannin gradient domestication. ARTP experiments showed that a "double-saddle" shape of survival rate curve was achieved, and a positive mutation rate of 63.6% was reached by setting the implantation time of mutagenesis to 100 s. In contrast to the original stain at the presence of 20.0 g/L tannin in the medium, the selected mutant A. niger AA120 exhibits an increase of biomass by 43.76% to 32.9 g/L, and citric acid production capacity by 20.34% to 130.8 g/L, with 8% (w/w) of inoculation quantity, an initial pH of 6.2 and shaking speed of 250 r/min. In this work, we present a referable method for the mutagenesis screening of the A. niger, and the application of acorn starch as a new raw material for the development of the citric acid industry.

Background: Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a rare disease in China, and very little large-scale studies have been conducted to date. We aimed to investigate the clinical and genetic features of CGD in Chinese pediatric patients., Methods: Pediatric patients with CGD from Beijing Children's Hospital, Capital Medical University, China, were enrolled from January 2006 to December 2016., Results: A total of 159 pediatric patients with CGD were enrolled. The median age of clinical onset was 1.4 months, and 73% (116/159) had clinical onset symptoms before the 1 year of age. The most common site of invasion was the lungs. The lymph nodes, liver, and skin were more frequently invaded in X-linked (XL) CGD patients than in autosomal recessive (AR) CGD patients (P < 0.05). Approximately 64% (92/144) of the pediatric patients suffered from abnormal response to BCG vaccination. The most frequent pathogens were Aspergillus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Gene analysis indicated that 132 cases (89%, 132/147) harbored CYBB pathogenic variants, 7 (5%, 7/147) carried CYBA pathogenic variants, 4 (3%, 4/147) had NCF1 pathogenic variants, and 4 (3%, 4/147) had NCF2 pathogenic variants. The overall mortality rate in this study was 43%, particularly the patients were males, with CYBB mutant and did not receive HSCT treatment., Conclusions: Chronic granulomatous disease is a rare disease affecting Chinese children; however, it is often diagnosed at a later age, and thus, the mortality rate is relatively high. A combined in situ electrochemical attenuated total reflection-surface enhanced IR absorption spectroscopy, microkinetic simulation, and density functional theory calculation study shows that not only can the adsorbed sulfide disproportionally affect the surface binding of OOH * (E OOH * ) vs OH * (E OH * ), i.e., breaking the original scaling relationship of pure metals (Ir, Pd, Pt, Au), to enhance oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity but can also be used as a reaction pathway alternating species to help deepen our mechanistic understanding of ORR.

A novel ratiometric electrochemiluminescence (ECL) indicator has been constructed for ultratrace As(iii) detection based on the synergistic quenching of ECL emission of Au-g-C3N4 NSs using As(iii) and Ru(bpy)32+, meanwhile generating a new ECL signal of Ru(bpy)32+ with an increased intensity. Due to the dual quenching effect of As(iii) and Ru(bpy)32+ coupled with the generation of the second ECL signal of Ru(bpy)32+, the sensitivity and selectivity for detecting As(iii) are vastly enhanced.

A novel dual-emission fluorescence ratiometric probe of luminol-Tb-GMP CPNPs for highly sensitive and selective detection of ALP and As(v) has been constructed based on the stimulus responsivity of luminol. The introduction of luminol as a ligand for Tb 3+ , combined with GMP, leads to a sensor which is more robust, sensitive, and efficient.

Flexible of tonifying the kidney and promoting blood circulation treatment of anovulatory infertility in clinic, has achieved remarkable curative effect. Kidney deficiency and blood stasis is a common form of gynecological disease. After years of clinical practice, we also found that patients with anovulatory infertility were more common with kidney deficiency and blood stasis. To systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of Bushen Huoxue ricipe in treating patients suffering from diminished ovarian reserve. Databases such as CNKI, WanFang, VIP, CBM, PubMed, EMbase and Cochrane Library were searched on randomized controlled trial/quasi-randomized controlled trial about Bushen Huoxue ricipe in treating patients suffering from diminished ovarian reserve form the inception of the study until June 2017. The studies were screened according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Risk of bias evaluation tools were adopted to conduct quality evaluation. Meta-analysis on outcome indicator was performed by RevMan Version 5.3 Software. Due to the different Bushen Huoxue recipe (observation group) and the different Western medicine(control group) of all included studies, the effect size was combined by the random effect model after the subgroup analysis or sensitivity analysis was performed. Eventually 11 trials were included, including 733 cases of patients. Results of Meta-analysis indicated that, Bushen Huoxue recipe had advantages over Western medicine on lowering FSH, increasing AMH and AFC, enhancing the Chinese medicine symptom curative effect; Bushen Huoxue recipe had no advantages over Western medicine on increasing E2; the advantages of Bushen Huoxue recipe were not clear on reducing FSH/LH and increasing total effective rate because of the different outcomes to compared with the different Western medicine; no serious adverse reaction appering from Bushen Huoxue recipe was reported in the including researches. Bushen Huoxue recipe has the clinical curative effect and high safety suffering from diminished ovarian reserve. In order to analyze Professor Ma Kun's medication in treating anovulatory infertility, her prescriptions for treating anovulatory infertility in 2012-2015 were collected. The medication features and the regularity of prescriptions were mined by using traditional Chinese medicine inheritance support system, association rules, complex system entropy clustering and other mining methods. Finally, a total of 684 prescriptions and 300 kinds of herbs were screened out, with a total frequency of 11 156 times; And 68 core combinations and 8 new prescriptions were mined. The top three frequently used herbs by effect were respectively tonic herb, blood circulation promoting herb, and Qi-circulation promoting herb. The top three tastes were sweetness, bitterness and pungent flavor. The results showed 28 herbs with a high frequency of ≥100.The top 10 frequently used herbs were respectively Angelica Sinensis Radix, Cyperi Rhizoma, Chuanxiong Rhizome, Paeoniae Radix Rubra, Cyathulae Radix, Taxilli Herba, Cuscutae Semen, Codonopsis Radix, Ligustri Lucidi Fructus, Paeoniae Albaand Paeoniae Radix Alba. The association rules analysis showed commonly used herbal pairs, including Rehmanniae Radix Preparata-Chuanxiong Rhizome, Rehmanniae Radix Preparata-Angelica Sinensis Radix, Cuscutae Semen-Dipsaci Radix. Objective: To clone and express the Tibetan Sheep-origin Echinococcus granulosus Antigen B8/2 Gene, and immunologically identify the encoded protein., Methods: The cDNA of EgAgB8/2 gene was amplified by RT-PCR. The prokaryotic expression vector pET-EgAgB8/2 was constructed and transformed into E. coli BL21（DE3） for expression. Proteins were extracted, separated in SDS-PAGE and identified by Western blotting., Results: The cloned EgAgB8/2 gene was 335 bp in length, and had a 98%-100% sequence homology with the reported cDNA sequence of EgAgB8/2, indicating the successful construction of the pET-EgAgB8/2 vector. SDS-PAGE revealed large amount of proteins in supernatant. Western blotting further confirmed the expression of the target protein., Conclusion: The EgAgB8/2 gene of Tibetan Sheep-origin in Qinghai is successfully cloned, and the constructed pET-EgAgB8/2 vector can be used to express the target protein.

Objective: To compare the difference of early postoperative hip abductor strength and function between improved Gibson anterolateral approach (group A) and conventional Gibson posterolateral approach (group B) in patients who had underwent total hip arthroplasty (THA)., Methods: Among 149 patients performing total hip arthroplasty,130 patients were followed up and were randomly divided into two groups (19 unqualified cases were excluded). Group A included 65 cases who underwent anterolateral approach, and the other group included 65 cases who underwent posterolateral approach. In the group A, male:female = 26:39,with an average age of (72.5 ± 8.3) years old, BMI of (24.7 ± 3.7) kg/m², and hip abductor strength of (1.08 ± 0.49) N · m/kg. In the group B, male:female = 30:35, with an average age of (71.6 ± 7.1) years old, BMI of (25.5 ± 3.9) kg/m², and hip abductor strength of (1.05 ± 0.51) N · m/kg. In the age-related control group, male:female = 33:32, with an average age of (73.1 ± 7.5) years old, BMI of (24.2 ± 3.8) kg/m², and hip abductor strength of (1.17 ± 0.53) N · m/kg. The age, BMI, hip abductor strength, anatomy of surgical approach, hip abduction angles and Harris score in all patients were evaluated at the day before surgery and at 1, 2, 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery. All preoperative clinical data (age, BMI and abductor strength of the uninjured side limb ) of these cases had no significant differences., Results: At 1, 2, 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery, the hip abductor strength in group A were (0.53 ± 0.13), (0.66 ± 0.21), (0.85 ± 0.15), (0.95 ± 0.19), (1.03 ± 0.13) N · m/kg respectively, while in group B were (0.46 ± 0.14), (0.57 ± 0.18), (0.78 ± 0.12), (0.85 ± 0.18), (0.98 ± 0.14) N · m/ kg respectively.The differences between the two groups at the 6th months after operation were significant; the hip abduction angles in group A were (25.35 ± 4.31)°, (36.53 ± 5.13)°, (48.07 ± 1.62)°, (61.53 ± 1.77)°, (68.62 ± 3.16)°,while in group B were (23.47 ± 2.41)°, (33.42 ± 4.23)°, (46.64 ± 2.51)°, (60.96 ± 1.75)°, (67.47 ± 4.36)°. The differences between the two groups at the 3rd month after operation were significant. Harris score in the group A were 72.23 ± 2.57, 79.36 ± 3.91, 84.75 ± 3.17, 88.63 ± 2.16, 95.21 ± 1.37 repectively ; while in the group B were 71.58 ± 3.62, 78.96 ± 2.21, 83.97 ± 3.57, 87.92 ± 2.94, 94.83 ± 1.62 respectively. There were no significant differences between them., Conclusion: Owing to less muscles interrupted, the THA with improved Gibson anterolateral approach offers a better improvement in earlier hip abductor strength and abduction angle compared with the conventional surgery.
