Abstract Background In the current study, we evaluated whether atopic dermatitis (AD) affects the entire body rather than being limited to skin barrier damage and inflammation. We hypothesized that medium-term exposure of distant organs to systemic inflammatory cytokines in sub-chronic inflammatory skin diseases has detrimental effects on distant tissues. Results Our findings demonstrated the dysregulation of genes and pathways associated with inflammation and the skin barrier, as well as genes and pathways involved in muscle development that respond to chemicals or stress in muscle tissues, all of which were reversed by hydrocortisone (Hc) administration. The expression of Ces1d showed significant differences during disease onset and after treatment in both skin and skeletal muscle, suggesting that Ces1d is likely responsible for the alleviation of subchronic AD. Conclusions Using NC/Nga mice with AD-like symptoms, we compared the transcriptomes of the skeletal muscle (a tissue that is relatively distant from the skin) with those of the skin (the lesion induction site) before and after disease induction, after which Hc was administered. Although further study is needed to better understand the effects of Ces1d on AD, skeletal muscle was associated with AD pathogenesis, and AD-like symptoms appeared to affect the body in a systemic manner. Given the importance of evidence-based medicine and the development of precision medicine, our findings provide insights into the mechanisms of AD onset and progression.

Abstract The effect of immune‐based therapies on patients with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-positive advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) resistant to EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy remains unclear. The ALTER-L038 study aimed to evaluate efficacy and safety of a chemotherapy-free combination of benmelstobart, an anti-programmed cell death ligand 1 antibody, and anlotinib, a small-molecule multi-target anti-angiogenic TKI, in EGFR-positive advanced NSCLC patients who progressed after EGFR TKI therapy. Patients were enrolled in a phase I/II study. In phase I (dose-escalation), patients received anlotinib (8, 10, 12 mg) plus benmelstobart (1200 mg). Recommended phase II dose, determined during phase I, was used in phase II dose-expansion cohort. Primary endpoints were maximum tolerable dose in phase I and progression-free survival (PFS) in phase II. At the data cutoff date (March 10, 2024), 55 patients were enrolled in phase II dose-expansion cohort. Median PFS of patients included in phase II cohort was 9.0 months, median overall survival was 28.9 months, objective response rate was 25.5%, disease control rate was 87.3%, and median duration of response was 19.8 months. Incidence of grade ≥3 treatment-related adverse events in study population was 25.5% (14/55), whereas grade ≥3 immune-related adverse events occurred in 10.9% (6/55) of patients. Benmelstobart plus anlotinib showed promising anti-tumor efficacy with tolerable safety profile, supporting the value of further development of this convenient chemotherapy-free regimen for patients with EGFR-positive advanced NSCLC who progressed after EGFR TKI therapy. Abstract Small molecular RNAs, including microRNA (miRNA) and small interfering RNA (siRNA), participate in the regulation of gene expression. As powerful regulators, miRNAs, take part in posttranscriptional regulation of gene expression and play important roles in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Meanwhile, siRNA can induce sequence-specific gene silencing, thus being able to inhibit tumorigenesis by suppressing the expression of their targeted proto-oncogenes. Small RNAs (including naked miRNAs and siRNAs) are easily degraded by circulating RNAase, which can be retarded through the package of nanoparticles. Therefore, nanoparticles help tumor therapy by regulating targeted genes of small RNAs. Here, we reviewed the effects of small RNAs on gene expression; the advantages, disadvantages, and targeted modification of nanoparticles as carriers transporting small RNAs; and the application of nanocarriers delivering small RNA for cancer-targeted therapy.

Genomic imprinting is essential for mammalian growth and embryogenesis. High-throughput bisulfite sequencing accompanied with parental haplotype-specific information allows analysis of imprinted genes and imprinting control regions (ICRs) on a large scale. Currently, although several allelic methylated regions (AMRs) detection software were developed, methods for detecting imprinted AMRs is still limited. Here, we developed a SNP-independent statistical approach, AIMER, to detect imprinting-like AMRs. By using the mouse frontal cortex methylome as input, we demonstrated that AIMER performs very well in detecting known germline ICRs compared with other methods. Furthermore, we found the putative parental AMRs AIMER detected could be distinguished from sequence-dependent AMRs. Finally, we found a novel germline imprinting-like AMR using WGBS data from 17 distinct mouse tissue samples. The results indicate that AIMER is a good choice for detecting imprinting-like (parent-of-origin-dependent) AMRs. We hope this method will be helpful for future genomic imprinting studies. Objective Clinical concerns exist regarding the quality of bony consolidation in the context of the induced membrane technique. This study evaluates the clinical process of bone grafting in the second stage of induced membrane bone union in patients with tibial bone defects to infer the possibility of non‐union and establish a reliable and effective evaluation method combined with computed tomography (CT) to assess fracture healing. Methods Patients with tibial bone defects who underwent the induced membrane technique at our hospital between February 2017 and February 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. The Hounsfield unit (HU) values of the patients were evaluated at different times during the second stage of bone grafting. Bone healing at the boundary value of the 120 HU output threshold (−1024 HU–3071 HU) was directionally selected, and the changes in the growth volume of union (new bone volume [selected according to HU value]/bone defect volume) were compared with analyzing individual class bone union. Method 1 involved X‐rays revealing that at least three of the four cortices were continuous and at least 2 mm thick, with the patient being pain free. For Method 2, new bone volume (selected according to HU value/bone defect volume) at the stage was compared with analyzing individual class healing. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used for Methods 1 and 2. Results A total of 42 patients with a segmental bone defect with a mean age of 40.5 years (40.5 ± 8.3 years) were included. The relationship between bone graft volume and time variation was analyzed by single factor repeated variable analysis (F = 6.477, p = 0.016). Further, curve regression analysis showed that the change in bone graft volume over time presented a logarithmic curve pattern (Y = 0.563 + 0.086 × ln(X), Ra2 = 0.608, p = 0.041). Abstract Background and Purpose The tumour-node metastasis (TNM) classification is a common model for evaluating the prognostic value of tumour patients. However, few models have been used to predict the survival outcomes of patients with colorectal cancer liver metastasis (CRLM) with unresectable metastases who received the primary local surgery. Thus, we utilized the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database to establish novel nomograms for predicting the overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) of these patients. Methods Extracted primary data on CRLM patients by local surgery from SEER database. All prognostic factors of OS and CSS were determined by Cox regression analysis. The concordance index (C-index), receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and calibration curves were used to further evaluate the accuracy and discrimination of these nomograms. Decision curve analysis (DCA) was executed to evaluate the nomograms for the clinical net benefit. Risk stratification analysis (RSA) was used to evaluate the reliability of them in clinical. Results 3622 eligible patients were screened and assigned to training cohort (1812) or validation cohort (1810). The age, chemotherapy, tumour grade, primary tumour site, tumour size, lymph node positive rate (LNR), marital status, and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) were independent prognostic factors of OS. Additionally, the age, chemotherapy, tumour grade, primary tumour site, tumour size, LNR, and CEA were independent prognostic factors of CSS. The results of C-indexes and ROC curves indicated that the established nomograms exhibited better discrimination power than TNM classification. The calibration curves demonstrated excellent agreement between the predicted and actual survival rates for 1-, 3-, and 5 year OS and CSS. Meanwhile, the validation cohort demonstrated similar results. Background the clinic context, the DCA showed that these nomograms have higher net benefits, and the RSA showed that patients were further divided into low risk, medium risk, and high risk groups according to the predicted scores from nomograms. And, the Kaplan–Meier curve and log-rank test showed that the survival differences among the three groups are statistically significant. Conclusions The prognostic nomograms showed very high accuracy, identifiability, and clinical practicality in predicting the OS and CSS of CRLM patients with unresectable metastases treated by local surgery at 1-, 3-, and 5 years, which might improve individualized predictions of survival risks and help clinicians formulate treatment plans.

Abstract The spatiotemporal distribution of intangible cultural heritage in Fujian Province, China, and the factors that influence it were explored using multiple spatial scales. The samples include five batches of Chinese national-level and six batches of Chinese provincial-level intangible cultural heritage items, totaling 554. The samples involve city-scale, county-scale, and traditional dwellings, and the analysis uses various methods, such as gravity migration theory and the GeoDetector model. The results show that, in terms of historical timescales, the moving trajectory of the center of gravity of the intangible cultural heritage distribution in Fujian Province involves reciprocation from north to south, and the center moves south in time from the pre-Qin period to the modern period. Spatially, intangible cultural heritage in Fujian Province forms an overall aggregate pattern, among which traditional skills fall into an aggregate pattern; five categories, including traditional drama, fall into an aggregate-random pattern; and four categories, including traditional medicine, fall into a random pattern. The traditional art category and other intensive distribution areas are located in coastal areas, and the traditional dance category is scattered in northwestern Fujian Province. Experiments on the factors influencing intangible cultural heritage distribution were conducted at the city and county levels. At the city level, human geography factors, such as the resident population, urbanization rate, and gross domestic product, have a greater influence on distribution. At the county level, the influence of physical geographical factors clearly increases. The dominant factors for coastal cities are the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), average precipitation, and coastline, and that for inland cities is elevation. From the perspective of categories, the dominant factors of traditional music and Quyi are human geography factors, and those of other types of intangible cultural heritage are the synergistic effects of physical geography and human geography. The conclusions of this study are helpful for systematically protecting and developing the intangible cultural heritage industry and improving research theories and methodological systems of the spatiotemporal distribution and mechanism influencing intangible cultural heritage.

Abstract Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) associated pain commonly predicts adverse events among patients. This clinical feature indicates the engagement of nociceptors on sensory neurons during the development of malignancy. However, it is yet to be determined if targeting oncometabolite-associated nociception processes can hinder OSCC progression. In this study, we reported that nociceptive endings infiltrating both clinical samples and mouse tumor xenografts were associated with poorer clinical outcomes and drove tumor progression in vivo, as evidenced by clinical tissue microarray analysis and murine lingual denervation. We observed that the OSCC microenvironment was characteristic of excessive adenosine due to CD73 upregulation which negatively predicted clinical outcomes in the TCGA-HNSC patient cohort. Notably, such adenosine concentrative OSCC niche was associated with the stimulation of adenosine A2A receptor (A2AR) on trigeminal ganglia. Antagonism of trigeminal A2AR with a selective A2AR inhibitor SCH58261 resulted in impeded OSCC growth in vivo. We showed that trigeminal A2AR overstimulation in OSCC xenograft did not entail any changes in the transcription level of CGRP in trigeminal ganglia but significantly triggered the release of CGRP, an effect counteracted by SCH58261. We further demonstrated the pro-tumor effect of CGRP by feeding mice with the clinically approved CGRP receptor antagonist rimegepant which inhibited the activation of ERK and YAP. Finally, we diminished the impact of CGRP on OSCC with istradefylline, a clinically available drug that targets neuronal A2AR. Therefore, we established trigeminal A2AR-mediated CGRP release as a promising druggable circuit in OSCC treatment.

Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) are well-known prebiotics that have the potential to improve sow reproductive performance and increase piglet growth. However, previous studies were observed in sole FOS-supplemented diets of sows or weaned piglets and did not consider the sow-to-piglet transfer effect on the performance and diarrhea rate of weaned piglets. This study explores the effects of dietary FOS supplementation on the reproductive performance of sows, and the effects of FOS supplementation at different stages on the growth performance and diarrhea rate of weaned piglets. A split-plot experimental design was used with sow diet effect in the whole plot and differing piglet diet effect in the subplot. Fifty-two multiparous sows (223.24 ± 14.77 kg) were randomly divided into 2 groups (0 or 0.2% FOS). The experiment lasted from day 85 of gestation to day 21 of lactation. Reproductive performance, glucose tolerance, placental angiogenesis, and intestinal flora of sows were assessed. At weaning, 192 weaned piglets were grouped in 2 × 2 factorial designs, with the main effects of FOS supplemental level of sow diet (0 and 0.2%), and FOS supplemental level of weaned piglet diet (0 and 0.2%), respectively. The growth performance and diarrhea rate of the weaned piglets were analyzed during a 28-d experiment. BackgroundThe association between the gut microbiota and sepsis has garnered attention in the field of intestinal research in sepsis. This study utilizes bibliometric methods to visualize and analyze the literature on gut microbiota research in sepsis from 2011 to 2024, providing a scientific foundation for research directions and key issues in this domain.MethodsOriginal articles and reviews of gut microbiota research in sepsis, which published in English between 2011 and 2024, were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection on June 21, 2024. Python, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace software were used for the visual analysis of the retrieved data.ResultsA total of 1,031 articles were analyzed, originating from 72 countries or regions, 1,614 research institutions, and 6,541 authors. The articles were published in 434 different journals, covering 89 different research fields. The number of publications and citations in this research area showed a significant growth trend from 2011 to 2024, with China, the United States, and the United Kingdom being the main research forces. Asada Leelahavanichkul from Thailand was identified as the most prolific author, making him the most authoritative expert in this field. “Nutrients” had the highest number of publications, while “Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology,” “Frontiers in Immunology” and “the International Journal of Molecular Sciences” have shown increasing attention to this field in the past 2 years. Author keywords appearing more than 100 times included “gut microbiota (GM),” “sepsis” and “microbiota.” Finally, this study identified “lipopolysaccharides (LPS),” “short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs),” “probiotics,” “fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT)” and “gut-liver axis” as the research hotspots and potential frontier directions in this field.ConclusionThis bibliometric study summarizes current important perspectives and offers comprehensive guidance between sepsis and intestinal microbiota, which may help researchers choose the most appropriate research directions.

Abstract Multi‐stable structures can be reconfigured with fewer, lightweight, and less accurate actuators. This is because the attraction domain in the multi‐stable energy landscape provides both reconfiguration guidance and shape accuracy. Additionally, such structures can generate impulsive motion due to structural instability. Most multi‐stable units are planar structures, while spatial linkages can generate complex 3D motion and hold a more promising potential for applications. This study proposes a generalized approach to design a type of intrinsically multi‐stable spatial (IMSS) linkages with multiple prescriptible configurations, which are structurally compatible, and naturally stable at these states. It reveals that all over‐constrained mechanisms can be transformed into multi‐stable structures with the same design method. Single‐loop bi‐stable 4R and quadra‐stable 6R spatial linkages modules with intrinsic non‐symmetric stable states, which are transformed from fundamental kinematic linkage mechanisms unit such as Bennett and Bricard linkages, are designed to illustrate the basic idea and the superiority over the ordinary methods. Multi‐loop assembly by these IMSS linkage modules shows potential for practical applications that are required for the deployability and impulsivity of reconfiguration. Two preliminary design cases of a deployable tube and an impulsive gripper are experimentally presented to validate this applicability. Further promisingly, this design method of IMSS linkages paves the way for morphing platforms with lightweight actuation, high shape accuracy, high stiffness, and prescribed impulsive 3D motion.

The Chinese soft-shelled turtle (Pelodiscus sinensis) exhibits sexual dimorphism. Compared with females, males are considered to have higher economic value due to their accelerated growth, greater body mass, and longer skirt width. Studies focused on these sex disparities have largely neglected potential sex differences in growth. Here, we performed RNA sequencing of muscle tissue components from 1-year-old specimens to reveal gene expression patterns in P. sinensis. In our male and female cohorts, our analysis revealed, respectively, 388 and 526 upregulated differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 1129 and 635 downregulated DEGs. Through weighted coexpression network analysis (WGCNA) and integration with phenotype data, we established two main gene modules: a light yellow module encompassing 191 genes (e.g., ACACB, CTH, HADHA, and CTNNB) that demonstrated a positive correlation with population traits, and a black module comprising 298 genes (e.g., CAV3, PIK3CD, SMAD3, and VEGFA) that demonstrated a negative correlation with population traits. We also performed a DEG evaluation and gene set enrichment analysis across individuals of different sizes and noted that pathways such as protein digestion and assimilation (ko04974), were substantially augmented in larger specimens. In these pathways, the collagen (COL) and solute carrier (SLC) gene families were noted to be crucial for sustaining body structure and facilitating nutrient and metabolite transportation. In conclusion, we elucidated the essential modules, pivotal genes, and pathways involved in gene expression differences among various P. sinensis size groupings. Our results provide novel insights for future studies on growth discrepancies in P. sinensis.

BackgroundAddressing the long-term physical and mental health impacts of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) remains a significant public health challenge. Additionally, ACEs can contribute to intergenerational transmission, affecting future generations. While previous studies have primarily focused on children and adolescents, there is limited data on ACE subtypes and influencing factors among the general adult population, particularly in China. This study aims to explore the prevalence, subtypes, and factors influencing ACEs among Chinese adults.MethodA total of 1,932 Chinese residents from southwest China (Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou provinces, and Chongqing Municipality) participated in the study, consisting of 867 men (44.9%) and 1,065 women (55.1%). Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to identify ACE clusters, and regression analysis examined associations between ACE clusters and demographic factors, physical illness, and mental health outcomes.ResultsThe findings revealed that 28.7% of participants had experienced at least one ACE, while 13.2% had experienced three or more ACEs. Three distinct ACE clusters were identified: a low ACE group, a high emotional and physical abuse/family dysfunction group, and a high ACE/sexual abuse group. Regression analysis showed significant associations between childhood adversity and demographic factors (age, education, birthplace), as well as physical and mental health outcomes (anxiety, depression). ANOVA further confirmed significant differences in depression and anxiety scores across the clusters.ConclusionThese findings offer critical insights for developing targeted public health interventions. Policymakers should consider strategies to reduce childhood ACEs and mitigate their long-term consequences, with particular attention to high-risk groups.

Intestinal microbiota and its metabolites are involved in many physiological processes of the human body and play a vital role in maintaining human health. The occurrence of kidney disease can cause intestinal microbiota imbalance, resulting in diarrhea. The change of intestinal microbiota and its metabolites content can aggravate renal function injury, which has a bidirectional regulating effect. The theory of renal-intestinal axis further clarified that the impaired renal function is related to the imbalance of intestinal microorganisms, and the impaired intestinal barrier is related to the accumulation of toxin products. Because of its unique therapeutic advantages, Traditional Chinese Medicine can treat diarrhea by enhancing the growth of beneficial bacteria, inhibiting pathogenic bacteria and immune regulation, and slow down the continuous deterioration of kidney disease. This paper focuses on the relationship between intestinal microbiota and its metabolites and diarrhea, the influence of Traditional Chinese Medicine on intestinal microbiota in the treatment of diarrhea, and the role of intestinal microbiota and its metabolites in the renal-intestinal axis. It provides a theoretical basis for Traditional Chinese Medicine to regulate intestinal microbiota and its metabolites based on the renal-intestinal axis theory to treat nephrology-induced diarrhea, and also provides a new idea and method for Traitional Chinese Medicine to treat nephrology-induced diarrhea.

The convincing performances of deep neural networks (DNNs) can be degraded tremendously under malicious samples, known as adversarial examples. Besides, with the widespread edge platforms, it is essential to reduce the DNN model size for efficient deployment on resource-limited edge devices. To achieve both adversarial robustness and model sparsity, we propose a robustness-aware search framework, an Adversarial Neural Architecture Search by the Pruning policy (ANAS-P). The layer-wise width is searched automatically via the binary convolutional mask, titled Depth-wise Differentiable Binary Convolutional indicator (D2BC). By conducting comprehensive experiments on three classification data sets (CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, and Tiny-ImageNet) utilizing two adversarial losses TRADES (TRadeoff-inspired Adversarial DEfense via Surrogate-loss minimization) and MART (Misclassification Aware adveRsarial Training), we empirically demonstrate the effectiveness of ANAS in terms of clean accuracy and adversarial robust accuracy across various sparsity levels. Our proposed approach, ANAS-P, outperforms previous representative methods, especially in high-sparsity settings, with significant improvements.

The current existing classifiers for distinguishing malignant from benign pulmonary nodules is limited by effectiveness or clinical practicality. In our study, we aimed to develop and validate a gene classifier for lung cancer diagnosis. To identify the genes involved in this process, we used the weighted gene co-expression network analysis to analyze gene expression datasets from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO). We identified the three most relevant modules associated with malignant nodules and performed functional enrichment analysis on them. The results indicated significant involvement in metabolic, immune-related, cell cycle, and viral-related processes. All three modules showed enrichment in metabolic reprogramming pathways. Based on these genes, we intersected genes from the three modules with metabolic reprogramming-related genes and further intersected with differentially expressed genes to get 78 genes. After machine learning algorithms and manual selection, we finally got a nine-gene classifier consisting of SEC24D, RPSA, PSME3, PSMD8, PSMB7, NCOA1, MED12, LPCAT1, and AKR1C3. Our developed and validated classifier-based model demonstrated good discrimination, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.763 in the development cohort, 0.744 in the internal validation cohort, and 0.718 in the external validation cohort, and outperformed previous clinical models. Moreover, the addition of nodule size improved the predictive capability of the classifier. We further verify the expression of the gene in the classifier using TCGA lung cancer samples and found eight of the genes showed significant differential expression in lung adenocarcinoma while all nine genes showed significant differential expression in lung squamous carcinoma. Our findings underscore the significance of metabolic reprogramming pathways in patients with malignant pulmonary nodules, and our gene classifier can assist clinicians in differentiating benign from malignant pulmonary nodules in clinical settings.

Constituents of cigarette smoke are known to be carcinogens. Additionally, there is mounting evidence that the liver is an organ susceptible to tobacco carcinogenicity. Nicotine, the primary constituent of tobacco, plays a role in cancer progression. In our previous study, it was found that nicotine enhances the proliferation of a human normal fetal hepatic (WRL68) cell due to the activation of p53 mutation at Ser249 (p53-RS)/STAT1/CCND1 signaling pathway. Here, we further elucidated the mechanism of regulating this pathway. Firstly, dose-dependent increase of SETDB1 protein level in WRL68 cells upon exposure to nicotine (1.25, 2.5, and 5 μM), significantly enhanced cellular proliferation. In addition, the upregulation of SETDB1 protein was necessary for the nuclear translocation of p53-RS to establish a ternary complex with STAT1 and SETDB1, which facilitated p53-RS di-methylation at K370 (p53-RS/K370me2). After that, the activation of CCND1/PI3K/AKT pathway was initiated when STAT1 stability was enhanced by p53-RS/K370me2, ultimately resulting in cell proliferation. Altogether, the study revealed that the increase in SETDB1 expression could potentially have a significant impact on the activation of CCND1/PI3K/AKT pathway through p53-RS/K370me2, leading to the proliferation of WRL68 cells induced by nicotine, which could contribute to hepatocellular carcinoma for smokers. Besides, the results of this study provided a foundation for the development of anticancer therapies for cancers associated with tobacco use.

Abstract Mismatching quality factors (Q-factors) is one of the main factors causing zero-rate output (ZRO) in degenerate (DE) Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) vibratory gyroscopes. To eliminate the ZRO of the DE MEMS gyroscope, this study introduces a method for real-time identification and automatic matching of Q-factors in rate mode. By leveraging the vibration characteristics of the DE MEMS vibratory gyroscope in rate mode, dedicated online test methods are designed to determine the Q-factors for both the drive and sense modes, enabling online identification of the Q-factor mismatching. Furthermore, an automatic Q-factor matching system is designed utilizing the mechanical-thermal dissipation mechanism of the resistive damper. The effectiveness of this proposed method is validated through simulations and experiments conducted on a MEMS disk resonator gyroscope (DRG). The results show a measurement error within 4% for Q-factor identification, and automatic Q-factor matching effectively reduces the ZRO by 77%. Employing this automatic Q-factor matching method successfully reduces the ZRO that is caused by the mismatching of Q-factors in the MEMS DRG from 0.11°/s to 0.025°/s and improves the bias instability (BI) from 0.40°/s to 0.19°/s.

Abstract Although previous studies have highlighted the problematic artificial intelligence (AI) usage behaviors in educational contexts, such as overreliance on AI, no study has explored the antecedents and potential consequences that contribute to this problem. Therefore, this study investigates the causes and consequences of AI dependency using ChatGPT as an example. Using the Interaction of the Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution (I-PACE) model, this study explores the internal associations between academic self-efficacy, academic stress, performance expectations, and AI dependency. It also identifies the negative consequences of AI dependency. Analysis of data from 300 university students revealed that the relationship between academic self-efficacy and AI dependency was mediated by academic stress and performance expectations. The top five negative effects of AI dependency include increased laziness, the spread of misinformation, a lower level of creativity, and reduced critical and independent thinking. The findings provide explanations and solutions to mitigate the negative effects of AI dependency.

Abstract Background Long-distance running is a popular competitive sport. We performed the current research as to develop an easily accessible and applicable model to predict half-marathon performance in male recreational half-marathon runners by nomogram. Methods Male recreational half-marathon runners in Zhejiang Province, China were recruited. A set of literature-based and panel-reviewed questionnaires were used to assess the epidemiological conditions of the recruited runners. Descriptive and binary regression analyses were done for the profiling and identification of predictors related to higher half-marathon performance (completing time ≤ 105 min). Participants were assigned to the training set (n = 141) and the testing set (n = 61) randomly. A nomogram was used to visually predict the half-marathon performance, and the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) was used to evaluate the predictive ability of the nomogram. Results A total of 202 participants (median age: 49 years; higher half-marathon performance: 33.7%) were included. Abstract Background Cognitive impairment (CoI), chronic kidney disease (CKD), and depression are prevalent among older adults and are interrelated, imposing a significant disease burden. This study evaluates the association of CKD and depression with CoI and explores their potential interactions. Method Data for this study were sourced from the 2011–2014 National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES). Multiple binary logistic regression models assessed the relationship between CKD, depression, and CoI while controlling for confounders. The interactions were measured using the relative excess risk of interaction (RERI), the attributable proportion of interaction (AP), and the synergy index (S). Results A total of 2,666 participants (weighted n = 49,251,515) were included in the study, of which 700 (16.00%) had CoI. After adjusting for confounding factors, the risk of CoI was higher in patients with CKD compared to non-CKD participants (odds ratio [OR] = 1.49, 95% confidence interval [CI]:1.12–1.99). The risk of CoI was significantly increased in patients with depression compared to those without (OR = 2.29, 95% CI: 1.73–3.03). Furthermore, there was a significant additive interaction between CKD and depression in terms of the increased risk of CoI (adjusted RERI = 2.01, [95% CI: 0.31–3.71], adjusted AP = 0.50 [95% CI: 0.25–0.75], adjusted S = 2.97 [95% CI: 1.27–6.92]). Conclusion CKD and depression synergistically affect CoI, particularly when moderate-to-severe depression co-occurs with CKD. Clinicians should be mindful of the combined impact on patients with CoI. Further research is needed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and assess the effects specific to different CKD stages.

In this paper, a method for generating multiple rotationally-symmetric power-exponent-phase vortex beams (RPVBs) on a spatial arbitrary distribution was demonstrated. The properties of a single RPVB were studied experimentally and theoretically with good agreement. Then, the flexibilities of user-defined spatial arbitrary distribution of multiple RPVBs were illustrated by applying an appropriated computer-generated hologram (CGH) on a spatial light modulator (SLM). This CGH was generated by superposing the interference pattern of a single RPVB, which derived from a phase mask of Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beam and RPVB, and the phase shift calculated by the lenses and gratings (L&G) algorithm. As a result, the user-defined beam number, radial exponent (p), topological charge (TC), and power exponent (n) of the RPVBs can be controlled. Compared with the results of a single RPVB, the properties of individual spatial arbitrary distribution RPVBs were still kept the same as the CGH generated by the L&G algorithm, which would only bring a phase shift and would not involve additional phase transformations. The propagation properties of the multiple RPVBs were also studied. These results will extend the applications of RPVBs in optical trapping and may provide a new method to generate complex patterns like chiral structures.

Background: Pancreatic cancer is characterized by an extremely poor prognosis, even following potentially curative resection. Classical prognostic markers such as histopathological or clinical parameters have limited predictive power. The present study aimed to establish a prognostic model combining mRNA expression data with histopathological and clinical data to better predict survival and stratify pancreatic cancer patients following resection. We pioneered three models in one study and systematically evaluated the clinical benefits of all three models. Methods: To identify differentially expressed genes in pancreatic cancer, mRNA data from normal (GTEx database) and pancreatic cancer (TCGA database) tissues were used. Survival analysis was carried out to identify prognosis-relevant genes from the identified differentially expressed genes and LASSO regression was used to filter out hub genes. The risk score of several hub genes was calculated according to gene expression and coefficients. Validation was carried out using an independent set of GEO microarray data. Multivariate COX regression was used for identifying independent clinical and pathological risk factors related to patient's survival in the TCGA database and a prognostic model combining mRNA expression data with histopathological and clinical data was established. Another prognostic model using clinicopathological factors from the SEER database was conceived based on multivariate COX regression. Abstract Wearable sweat sensors are becoming increasingly popular for their robust capabilities in non-invasive, dynamic, and continuous real-time monitoring of biological information. Real-time monitoring of large-scale samples is crucial for realizing intelligent health. A major bottleneck for enabling large-scale sweat elucidation is the fabrication of wearable sensors equipped with microfluidic devices and flexible electrodes in a cost-effective, homogeneous performance and rapid large-scale way. Herein, a “Screen+Wax”-printing technique was introduced to prepare these components and construct “Lego Bricks” type wearable sweat sensor sensor to monitor sweat Na+ and K+. Flexible electrode arrays and paper-based microfluidic layers (they act as building blocks) were fabricated on polyethylene terephthalate and paper surfaces, respectively, using screen printing and wax printing. Gold nanoparticles and Na+/K+ ion-selective membranes were modified on the electrode surfaces by electrodeposition and drop coating, respectively. In this work, we highlight the excellent performance of the “Lego Bricks” type wearable sweat sensor in testing the Na+ and K+ imbalance of sweat from different body regions during exercise and, more significantly, to track the physical activity during prolonged exercise under different interventions. Furthermore, the prepared “Lego Bricks” wearable sweat ion electrochemical sensor is demonstrated to be capable of large-scale samples elucidation with outstanding performance and cost-effectiveness, which is expected to deeply integrate sweat monitoring into physical activity, providing an important tool for intelligent health.

Abstract Background Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death for women worldwide. Most of the breast cancer death are due to disease recurrence and metastasis. Increasingly accumulating evidence indicates that mitochondria play key roles in cancer progression and metastasis. Our recent study revealed that transmembrane protein PRRG4 promotes the metastasis of breast cancer. However, it is not clear whether PRRG4 can affect the migration and invasion of breast cancer cells through regulating mitochondria function. Methods RNA-seq analyses were performed on breast cancer cells expressing control and PRRG4 shRNAs. Quantitative PCR analysis and measurements of mitochondrial ATP content and oxygen consumption were carried out to explore the roles of PRRG4 in regulating mitochondrial function. Luciferase reporter plasmids containing different lengths of promoter fragments were constructed. Luciferase activities in breast cancer cells transiently transfected with these reporter plasmids were analyzed to examine the effects of PRRG4 overexpression on promoter activity. Transwell assays were performed to determine the effects of PRRG4-regulated pathway on migratory behaviors of breast cancer cells. Results Analysis of the RNA-seq data revealed that PRRG4 knockdown decreased the transcript levels of all the mitochondrial protein-encoding genes. Subsequently, studies with PRRG4 knockdown and overexpression showed that PRRG4 expression increased mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) content. Mechanistically, PRRG4 via Src activated STAT3 in breast cancer cells. Activated STAT3 in turn promoted the transcription of mtDNA polymerase POLG through a STAT3 DNA binding site present in the POLG promoter region, and increased mtDNA content as well as mitochondrial ATP production and oxygen consumption. In addition, PRRG4-mediated activation of STAT3 also enhanced filopodia formation, migration, and invasion of breast cancer cells. Moreover, PRRG4 elevated migratory behaviors and mitochondrial function of breast cancer cells through POLG. Conclusion Our results indicate that PRRG4 via the Src-STAT3-POLG axis enhances mitochondrial function and promotes migratory behaviors of breast cancer cells.

There is limited research on the relationship between membrane fouling and microbial metabolites in the nitrogen removal process coupled with membrane bioreactors (MBRs). In this study, we compared anoxic-oxic (AO) and partial nitritation–anammox (PNA), which were selected as representative heterotrophic and autotrophic biological nitrogen removal–coupled MBR processes for their fouling behavior. At the same nitrogen loading rate of 100 mg/L and mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentration of 4000 mg/L, PNA-MBR exhibited more severe membrane fouling compared to AO-MBR, as evidenced by monitoring changes in transmembrane pressure (TMP). In the autotrophic nitrogen removal process, without added organic carbon, the supernatant of PNA-MBR had higher concentrations of protein, polysaccharides, and low-molecular-weight humic substances, leading to a rapid flux decline. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) extracted from suspended sludge and cake sludge in PNA-MBR also contributed to more severe membrane fouling than in AO-MBR. The EPS subfractions of PNA-MBR exhibited looser secondary structures in protein and stronger surface hydrophobicity, particularly in the cake sludge, which contained higher contents of humic substances with lower molecular weights. The higher abundances of Candidatus Brocadia and Chloroflexi in PNA-MBR could lead to the production of more hydrophobic organics and humic substances. Hydrophobic metabolism products as well as anammox bacteria were deposited on the hydrophobic membrane surface and formed serious fouling. Therefore, hydrophilic membrane modification is more urgently needed to mitigate membrane fouling when running PNA–MBR than AO–MBR.

Employing drones and hyperspectral imagers for large-scale, precise evaluation of nitrogen (N) concentration in Carya cathayensis Sarg canopies is crucial for accurately managing nitrogen fertilization in C. cathayensis Sarg cultivation. This study gathered five sets of hyperspectral imagery data from C. cathayensis Sarg plantations across four distinct locations with varying environmental stresses using drones. The research assessed the canopy nitrogen concentration of C. cathayensis Sarg trees both during singular growth periods and throughout their entire growth cycles. The objective was to explore the influence of band combinations and spectral index formula configurations on the predictive capability of the hyperspectral indices (HIs) for canopy N concentration (CNC), optimize the performance between HIs and machine learning approaches, and validate the efficacy of optimized HI algorithms. The findings revealed the following: (i) Optimized HIs demonstrated optimal predictive performance during both singular growth periods and the full growth cycles of C. cathayensis Sarg. The most effective HI model for singular growth periods was the optimized–modified–normalized difference vegetation index (opt-mNDVI), achieving an adjusted coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.96 and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.71. For the entire growth cycle, the HI model, also opt-mNDVI, attained an R2 of 0.75 and an RMSE of 2.11; (ii) optimized band combinations substantially enhanced HIs’ predictive performance by 16% to 71%, while the choice between three-band and two-band combinations influenced the predictive capacity of optimized HIs by 4% to 46%. Hence, utilizing optimized HIs combined with Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) hyperspectral imaging to evaluate nitrogen concentration in C. cathayensis Sarg trees under complex field conditions offers significant practical value.

The European sweet cherry Prunus avium (L.), a member of the Rosaceae family, is one of the most popular and economically valuable fruits. However, the rapid spread of gummosis and poor management practices have become the major obstacles to their production. To identify pathogenic microorganisms responsible for gummosis disease, we conducted observations comparing the garden of Bailuyuan, which heavily suffered from gummosis disease and horn beetle damage, with the orchard of Mayuhe, which only suffered from gummosis disease, both from Xi’an, Shaanxi, China. Samples were obtained from the healthy tissues and gummosis disease tissues that used the Illumina sequence of 16S rRNA and the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) to identify bacterial and fungal communities in these samples. An alpha diversity analysis revealed a significantly higher fungal diversity of disease than in healthy tissue in the gummosis period. The results suggested that an imbalance in the fungal genera may be associated with gummosis disease. Species relative analyses showed some bacterial genera (Pelagibacterium, Halomonas, Azospirillum, Aquabacterium and Alistipes) and fungal genera (Penicillium, Alternaria and Rhodotorula) in the diseased tissues of gummosis. Among these, the increased relative abundance of the bacteria genes Halomonas, Pelagibacterium, Chelativorans, Pantoea, Aquabacterium, Alternaria and fungi genes Penicillium, Cystobasidium, Rhodotorula may be associated with gummosis of P. avium. The bacterial genera Methylobacterium, Psychroglaciecola, Aeromonas, Conexibacter and fungal genera Didymella, Aureobasidium, Mycosphaerella, Meyerozyma are probably antagonists of the pathogen of gummosis. These findings are an initial step in the identification of potential candidates for the biological control of the disease.

BackgroundAcute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) are severe respiratory conditions with complex pathogenesis, in which endothelial cells (ECs) play a key role. Despite numerous studies on ALI/ARDS and ECs, a bibliometric analysis focusing on the field is lacking. This study aims to fill this gap by employing bibliometric techniques, offering an overarching perspective on the current research landscape, major contributors, and emerging trends within the field of ALI/ARDS and ECs.MethodsLeveraging the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database, we conducted a comprehensive search for literature relevant to ALI/ARDS and ECs. Utilizing Python, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace, we performed a bibliometric analysis on the corpus of publications within this field.ResultsThis study analyzed 972 articles from 978 research institutions across 40 countries or regions, with a total of 5,277 authors contributing. These papers have been published in 323 different journals, spanning 62 distinct research areas. The first articles in this field were published in 2011, and there has been a general upward trend in annual publications since. The United States, Germany, and China are the principal contributors, with Joe G. N. Garcia from the University of Arizona identified as the leading authority in this field. American Journal of Physiology-Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology has the highest publication count, while Frontiers in Immunology has been increasingly focusing on this field in recent years. “Cell Biology” stands as the most prolific research area within the field. Finally, this study identifies endothelial glycocalyx, oxidative stress, pyroptosis, TLRs, NF-κB, and NLRP3 as key terms representing research hotspots and emerging frontiers in this field.ConclusionThis bibliometric analysis provides a comprehensive overview of the research landscape surrounding ALI/ARDS and ECs. It reveals an increasing academic focus on ALI/ARDS and ECs, particularly in the United States, Germany, and China. Our analysis also identifies several emerging trends and research hotspots, such as endothelial glycocalyx, oxidative stress, and pyroptosis, indicating directions for future research. The findings can guide scholars, clinicians, and policymakers in targeting research gaps and setting priorities to advance the field.

Background: Cognitive function impairment (CFI) is common in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and significantly impacts treatment adherence and quality of life. This study aims to create a simplified nomogram for early CFI risk detection. Methods: Data were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey cycles spanning from 1999 to 2002 and again from 2011 to 2014. Stepwise logistic regression was used to select variables and construct a CFI risk prediction model. Furthermore, C-statistic and Brier Score (BS) assessed model performance. Additionally, Kaplan–Meier survival curves were utilised to assess risk group-death prognosis relationships. Results: Of the 545 participants in the CKD model development cohort, a total of 146 (26.8 %) had CFI. The final model included the variables of age, race, education, annual family income, body mass index, estimated glomerular filtration rate, serum albumin and uric acid. The model had a C-statistic of 0.808 (95 % confidence interval (CI): 0.769–0.847) and a BS of 0.149. Furthermore, the 5-fold cross-validation internal C-statistic was 0.764 (interquartile range: 0.763–0.807) and BS was 0.154. Upon external validation, the model's C-statistic decreased to 0.752 (95 % CI: 0.654–0.850) and its BS increased to 0.182. The Kaplan–Meier survival curves demonstrated that intermediate-to-high-risk participants had shorter overall survival time than low-risk participants (log-rank test: p = 0.00042). Conclusions: This study established an effective nomogram for predicting CFI in patients with CKD, which can be used for the early detection of CFI and guide the treatment of patients with CKD.

Despite rapid evolution across eutherian mammals, the X-linked MIR-506 family miRNAs are located in a region flanked by two highly conserved protein-coding genes (SLITRK2 and FMR1) on the X chromosome. Intriguingly, these miRNAs are predominantly expressed in the testis, suggesting a potential role in spermatogenesis and male fertility. Here, we report that the X-linked MIR-506 family miRNAs were derived from the MER91C DNA transposons. Selective inactivation of individual miRNAs or clusters caused no discernible defects, but simultaneous ablation of five clusters containing 19 members of the MIR-506 family led to reduced male fertility in mice. Despite normal sperm counts, motility, and morphology, the KO sperm were less competitive than wild-type sperm when subjected to a polyandrous mating scheme. Transcriptomic and bioinformatic analyses revealed that these X-linked MIR-506 family miRNAs, in addition to targeting a set of conserved genes, have more targets that are critical for spermatogenesis and embryonic development during evolution. Our data suggest that the MIR-506 family miRNAs function to enhance sperm competitiveness and reproductive fitness of the male by finetuning gene expression during spermatogenesis.

ABSTRACT: Duck plague (DP) is one of the contagious diseases caused by Duck plague virus (DPV), which is a serious threat to the development of duck farming. Us3 is a PKA-like protein kinase in alphaherpesvirus, which can regulate the biological functions of many viral proteins, but whether Us3 regulates pUL48 protein has not been reported. In this paper, Western Blot, qRT-PCR, dual luciferase reporter system and Co-IP were used to investigate the relationship between pUL48 and Us3. The results showed that: 1) pUL48 interacted with Us3 at 138-256aa through its DBD region. 2) Us3 enhanced the protein expression of pUL48 in a dose-dependent manner. 3) Us3 promoted the mRNA level of pUL48 by activating its promoter activity. 4) Us3 inhibited the transcriptional activation function of pUL48. The results can provide scientific data for perfecting and supplementing the function of alpha herpesvirus Us3 and pUL48.

The α2-adrenoceptor agonist dexmedetomidine is a commonly used drug for sedatives in clinics and has analgesic effects; however, its mechanism of analgesia in the spine remains unclear. In this study, we systematically used behavioural and transcriptomic sequencing, pharmacological intervention, electrophysiological recording and ultrasound imaging to explore the analgesic effects of the α2-adrenoceptor and its molecular mechanism. Firstly, we found that spinal nerve injury changed the spinal transcriptome expression, and the differential genes were mainly related to calcium signalling and tissue metabolic pathways. In addition, α2-adrenoceptor mRNA expression was significantly upregulated, and α2-adrenoceptor was significantly colocalised with markers, particularly neuronal markers. Intrathecal dexmedetomidine suppressed neuropathic pain and acute inflammatory pain in a dose-dependent manner. The transcriptome results demonstrated that the analgesic effect of dexmedetomidine may be related to the modulation of neuronal metabolism. Weighted gene correlation network analysis indicated that turquoise, brown, yellow and grey modules were the most correlated with dexmedetomidine-induced analgesic effects. Bioinformatics also annotated the involvement of metabolic processes and neural plasticity. A cardiovascular–mitochondrial interaction was found, and ultrasound imaging revealed that injection of dexmedetomidine significantly enhanced spinal cord perfusion in rats with neuropathic pain, which might be regulated by pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 4 (pdk4), cholesterol 25-hydroxylase (ch25 h) and GTP cyclohydrolase 1 (gch1). Increasing the perfusion doses of dexmedetomidine significantly suppressed the frequency and amplitude of spinal nerve ligation-induced miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents. Overall, dexmedetomidine exerts analgesic effects by restoring neuronal metabolic processes through agonism of the α2-adrenoceptor and subsequently inhibiting changes in synaptic plasticity.

Abstract Objectives Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a life‐threatening complication that can occur in patients with lung cancer. In this study, we aimed to identify risk factors and examine the clinical characteristics of advanced lung cancer patients with PE. Methods We conducted a retrospective review of patients admitted to our two hospitals between January 2020 and June 2022. The case group consisted of patients with lung cancer and PE, and a closely matched control group was included to identify risk factors. Statistical analysis was conducted using R language. Results A total of 4957 patients were reviewed, and 162 patients (comprising 54 cases and 108 controls) were included in this study. The prevalence of lung cancer with PE in the study population was 1.08%. The majority of patients were male, and the most common histological subtype was adenocarcinoma (67%), followed by squamous cell carcinoma, small cell carcinoma, and poorly differentiated non‐small cell lung cancer. The majority of patients had a high performance status (PS) score, with 50% experiencing respiratory failure (mainly hypoxia) and 33% with deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Forty‐eight percent of patients were diagnosed with concurrent PE. Further analysis showed that PE was an independent predictor of poor survival, and a PS score of >1 was an independent risk factor for PE in patients with lung cancer. Conclusion Our study provides valuable insights into the epidemiology and prognosis of PE in lung cancer patients and suggests that a poor ECOG PS, which has not been previously reported, is an independent risk factor for PE.

Abstract Background The relationship between sleep disturbances and lung cancer is complex and bidirectional. This meta-epidemiological study aimed to explore the potential association between sleep disruption and the risk of pulmonary cancer. Methods We conducted a comprehensive literature search of the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases to retrieve relevant studies. We employed the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale to assess the quality of the observational studies. Stata 17.0 was used to synthesize and conduct a meta-analysis of odds ratios (ORs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs). We used funnel plot analysis and Egger’s regression test to evaluate potential publication bias. Results A total of 11 studies were included with 469,691 participants. The methodological quality of the included studies ranged from moderate to high. Compared with 7–8 h of sleep time, short sleep duration was associated with a 13% higher lung cancer risk [OR, 1.13; 95%CI: 1.02–1.25; I2 = 67.6%; P = 0.018] and long sleep duration with a 22% higher risk [OR, 1.22; 95%CI: 1.12–1.33; I2 = 6.9%; P

A radically different approach of using atomically-thin van der Waals (vdW) materials in MTJs is expected to boost their figure of merit, the tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR), while relaxing the lattice-matching requirements from the epitaxial growth and supporting high-quality integration of dissimilar materials with atomically-sharp interfaces. We report TMR up to 192% at 10 K in all-vdW Fe3GeTe2/GaSe/Fe3GeTe2 MTJs. Remarkably, instead of the usual insulating spacer, this large TMR is realized with a vdW semiconductor GaSe. Integration of semiconductors into the MTJs offers energy-band-tunability, bias dependence, magnetic proximity effects, and spin-dependent optical-selection rules. We demonstrate that not only the magnitude of the TMR is tuned by the semiconductor thickness but also the TMR sign can be reversed by varying the bias voltages, enabling modulation of highly spin-polarized carriers in vdW semiconductors.

In this study, polysaccharides were extracted at a rate of 87.5% ± 1.5% from native dandelion roots, and the dandelion root polysaccharides (DRPs) were then chemically modified to obtain sulfated polysaccharides (SDRPs) with a degree of substitution of 1.49 ± 0.07. The effects of modification conditions, physicochemical characterizations, structural characteristics, antioxidant properties, hypoglycemic activity, and proliferative effects on probiotics of DRP derivatives were further investigated. Results showed that the optimum conditions for sulfation of DRPs included esterification reagents (concentrated sulfuric acid: n-butanol) ratio of 3:1, a reaction temperature of 0 °C, a reaction time of 1.5 h, and the involvement of 0.154 g of ammonium sulfate. The DRPs and SDRPs were composed of six monosaccharides, including mannose, glucosamine, rhamnose, glucose, galactose, and arabinose. Based on infrared spectra, the peaks of the characteristic absorption bands of S=O and C-O-S appeared at 1263 cm−1 and 836 cm−1. Compared with DRPs, SDRPs had a significantly lower relative molecular mass and a three-stranded helical structure. NMR analysis showed that sulfated modification mainly occurred on the hydroxyl group at C6. SDRPs underwent a chemical shift to higher field strength, with their characteristic signal peaking in the region of 1.00–1.62 ppm. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis indicated that the surface morphology of SDRPs was significantly changed. The structure of SDRPs was finer and more fragmented than DRPs. Compared with DRPs, SDRPs showed better free radical scavenging ability, higher Fe2+chelating ability, and stronger inhibition of α-glucosidase and α-amylase. In addition, SDRPs had an excellent promotional effect on the growth of Lactobacillus plantarum 10665 and Lactobacillus acidophilus. Therefore, this study could provide a theoretical basis for the development and utilization of DRPs.

This study investigates the distribution, morphology, and potential functions of antennal sensilla in various wasp species, including Dolichovespula flora, D. intermedia, Vespula structor, Vl. vulgaris, Provespa barthelemyi, Vespa bicolor, V. ducalis, V. mocsaryana, and V. velutina var. nigothorax. The study thoroughly analyzes the antennal structure of these species, representing all four genera of the yellow-jacket and hornet subfamily Vespinae. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the study identifies a total of nineteen types of sensilla, including sensilla trichodea (ST-I, ST-II, ST-III), sensilla campaniform (SCF-I, SCF-II, SCF-III), pit organs (SCO-I, SCO-II, and SA), sensilla placodea (SP-I, SP-II), sensilla chaetica (SCH-I, SCH-II), sensilla basiconica (SB-I, SB-II), sensilla agmon (SAG-I, SAG-II), and sensilla coelocapitular (SCA). Additionally, tyloids were observed in the males of seven species, except for Vl. structor and Vl. vulgaris. The study provides insights into these sensilla types’ morphology, abundance, and distribution. It discusses the variations in sensilla morphology among different species and the presence of gender-specific sensilla. This study provides new data about the morphology and distribution patterns of sensilla and tyloid.

The electrochemical characteristic of ship metal materials in marine environments is an important factor affecting the generation of ship electric field characteristics. For a long time, researchers have mainly focused on the electrochemical characteristics of metal materials in normal-temperature seawater but paid less attention to the electrochemical characteristics of metal materials in low-temperature seawater. For three typical ship materials, experiments were designed based on the influence of different temperatures and salinity changes, and the polarization potential, polarization curve, and polarization resistance were compared in the low-temperature seawater. The results show that with the decrease in seawater temperature, the open circuit potential of metal materials and self-corrosion potential increase, but the degree of dissolution activation decreases. The proposed method may provide a reference for the study of electric field characteristic control and analysis and evaluation.

Abstract Toll plazas on expressways often experience congestion owing to the imbalance between traffic demand and supply. To address this issue, this paper designs a proactive traffic control method to relieve congestion at toll plazas based on the model predictive control (MPC) that integrates the dynamic lane configuration, that is, the numbers of electronic toll collection (ETC) and manual toll collection (MTC) lanes, and the variable speed limit (VSL). The proposed method first forecasts short‐term traffic demand in toll plazas based on the long short‐term memory neural network. Then the cell transmission model (CTM) is applied to predict the traffic evolutions in the toll plaza area. At last, the MPC‐based control framework is used to optimize the numbers of ETC and MTC lanes and the variable speed limit to minimize the total vehicle travel time in a rolling horizon. Micro‐simulation tests are carried out in VISSIM to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control method. The simulation results show that the proposed control method can significantly improve the traffic performances at the toll plazas. The findings in this study can lead to field implementation of proactive control at toll plazas.

To investigate the impacts of water/supercritical CO2-rock interaction on the micro-mechanical properties of shale, a series of high-temperature and high-pressure immersion experiments were performed on the calcareous laminated shale samples mined from the lower submember of the third member of Paleogene Shahejie Formation in the Jiyang Depression, Bohai Bay Basin. After that, grid nanoindentation tests were conducted to analyze the influence of immersion time, pressure, and temperature on micro-mechanical parameters. Experimental results show that the damage of shale caused by the water/supercritical CO2-rock interaction was mainly featured by the generation of induced fractures in the clay-rich laminae. In the case of soaking with supercritical CO2, the aperture of induced fracture was smaller. Due to the existence of induced fractures, the statistical averages of elastic modulus and hardness both decreased. Meanwhile, compaction and stress-induced tensile fractures could be observed around the laminae. Generally, the longer the soaking time, the higher the soaking pressure and temperature, the more significant the degradation of micro-mechanical parameters is. Compared with water-rock interaction, the supercritical CO2-rock interaction caused a lower degree of mechanical damage on the shale surface. Thus, supercritical CO2 can be used as a fracturing fluid to prevent the surface softening of induced fractures in shale reservoirs.

Abstract Purpose The purpose of this retrospective study was to introduce an alternative technique for the treatment of type II symptomatic ulnar styloid nonunion by the reinsertion of the triangular fibrocartilage complex and the ulnar collateral ligament. Methods Between March 2009 and May 2017, 45 patients (34 males and 11 females) suffering from the nonunion of type II ulnar styloid fractures all underwent the subperiosteal resection of the avulsed fragments and the reinsertion of the TFCC and ulnar collateral ligament. Outcome assessments included the ranges of motion of the wrist, grip strength, pain, and Mayo wrist score. The preoperative and postoperative parameters were compared. A P-value less than 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. Result The mean follow-up period was 21.66 ± 7.93 months (range, 12 to 26 months). At the final follow-up, the mean preoperative flexion and extension were 79.32 ± 4.52° and 74.40 ± 4.36° respectively. The mean preoperative pain score, grip strength, and Mayo wrist score were 32.48 ± 4.00; 23.88 ± 8.38 kg, and 77.72 ± 8.31 respectively. The mean postoperative flexion and extension of the wrist were 80.56 ± 6.32° and 75.43 ± 3.12° respectively. The mean postoperative pain score, grip strength, and Mayo wrist score were 12.41 ± 3.27, 26.31 ± 8.30 kg, and 90.71 ± 7.97 respectively. Abstract Background Mitochondrial RNA polymerase (POLRMT) is essential for the expression of mitochondrial genes. In recent studies, POLRMT expression promoted non‐small cell cancer cell proliferation in cell lines and xenografts. The present study investigated the impact of POLRMT expression and function on lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) patients. Method Multi‐omics data (genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics) from publicly available databases were used to assess the role of POLRMT expression and function in LUAD. These findings were further verified using cancer tissues from clinical samples. Results POLRMT was over‐expressed in LUADs, with mutation frequencies ranging from 1.30% to 5.71%. Over‐expression of POLRMT was associated with an abnormal clinicopathological condition resulting in a decreased lifespan. Furthermore, gene sets enrich analysis revealed that POLRMT expression was linked to WNT/beta‐catenin signaling; the expression of downstream target genes was positively correlated with POLRMT expression. Also, POLRMT expression was positively correlated with immunosuppressive genes, thereby affecting immune infiltration. Conclusion POLRMT is over‐expressed in LUAD, thereby impacting patient survival. It is also involved in WNT/beta‐catenin signaling and may affect tumor infiltration.

Abstract Background Effective noninvasive biomarkers of gastric cancer (GC) are critical for early detection and improvement of prognosis. We performed genome‐wide long non‐coding RNA (lncRNA) microarray analysis to identify and validate novel GC biomarkers depending on a high‐risk population cohort. Methods LncRNA profiles were described using the Human LncRNA Microarray between GC and control plasma samples. The differential candidate lncRNAs were validated in two stages by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT‐PCR). We further evaluated the joint effect between the GC‐associated lncRNA and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection on the risk of cardia and non‐cardia GC, respectively. Results Different lncRNA expression profiles were identified between GC and control plasma with a total of 1206 differential lncRNAs including 470 upregulated and 736 downregulated in GC compared with the control group. The eight significantly upregulated lncRNAs (RP11‐521D12.1, AC011995.3, RP11‐5P4.3, RP11‐244 K5.6, RP11‐422 J15.1, CTD‐2306 M5.1, CTC‐428G20.2, and AC009133.20) in GC cases both in the present study and a similar microarray screening study by our collaborative team were selected for a two‐stage validation. After the large sample size validation, the subjects with higher expression of RP11‐244 K5.6 showed a significantly increased risk of GC with an adjusted odds ratio (OR) as 2.68 and 95% confidence interval (CI) as 1.15–6.24. Joint effects between RP11‐244 K5.6 expression and H. pylori infection on the risk of GC were evaluated with no statistical significance. Conclusions Our study found different lncRNA expression profiles between GC and control plasma and preliminarily identified RP11‐244 K5.6 as a potential noninvasive biomarker for GC screening.

BackgroundIncreasing evidence suggests a close association between the intestinal microbiome and the respiratory system, drawing attention to studying the gut-lung axis. This research employs bibliometric methods to conduct a visual analysis of literature in the field of intestinal microbiota and lung diseases over the past two decades. It offers scientific foundations for research directions and critical issues in this field.MethodsWe retrieved all articles on intestinal microbiota and lung diseases from the SCI-Expanded of WoSCC on October 25, 2023. The analysis included original articles and reviews published in English from 2011 to 2023. We utilized Python, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace to analyze the retrieved data visually.ResultsA total of 794 publications were analyzed. China ranked first in the number of publications, while the United States had the highest citations and H-index. Jian Wang was the most prolific author. Zhejiang University was the institution with the highest number of publications. Frontiers in Microbiology was the journal with the most publications. Author keywords appearing more than 100 times included “intestinal microbiota/microbiome”, “microbiota/microbiome”, and “gut-lung axis”.ConclusionThe correlation and underlying mechanisms between intestinal microbiota and lung diseases, including asthma, COPD, lung cancer, and respiratory infections, remain hot topics in research. However, understanding the mechanisms involving the gut-lung axis is still in its infancy and requires further elucidation.
