However, triggering factors, ECG and echocardiographic findings, and prognosis of TC have not been well studied in children. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the demographic characteristics, signs and symptoms, laboratory findings, and prognosis of children with TC. We analyzed demographic characteristics of childhood TC cases (aged < 18 years) treated at our university hospital from 2014 to 2019. The triggering factors of TC; outcomes of the disease; and laboratory, ECG, and echocardiographic findings at presentation were also examined. A total of 17 patients (mean age 9.71 +/- 5.03 years, 52.9% female) were included in the study. Chest pain, palpitation, and dyspnea were the most common presenting symptoms. The most common triggering factor was emotional stress (47%) in our study population. Ten patients (58.8%) had a classical form of TC, with apical left ventricular wall motion abnormalities. None of the patients died, and 15 (88.2%) had complete recovery of left ventricular systolic function. Only two patients (11.8%) had a left ventricular ejection fraction < 50% at the end of follow-up. Conclusion: This is the first retrospective data on childhood TC. AMAÇ: Uzamış unkonjuge hiperbilirubinemi, bir neona-tal sarılık tipidir. Yenidoğanlarda, postnatal 14-21 günden daha uzun süren, yüksek bilirubin düzeyleri( 8 mg/dl) persisting beyond 14-21 postnatal days. This study was carried out to evaluate and determine the clinical and laboratory characteristics of infants with prolonged jaundice and underling causes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This prospective study was conducted on newborn infants diagnosed with prolonged unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia during January 2018 and December 2018 at our pediatric outpatient clinic. The demographic, clinical and laboratory characteristics of these patients were recorded and then analyzed. RESULTS: In total, 91 infants diagnosed with prolonged jaundice and 65 healthy newborn infants as control group were enrolled in this study. Of the infants with prolonged jaundice, mean birth-weight was 3152 ± 504 g (1800-4300 g), mean gestational age was 38.2 ± 1.6 weeks (35-41 weeks), and mean total bilirubin level at the time of diagnosis was 10.98 ± 2.3 mg/dL (8-18.7 mg/dL). There was male sex dominance in prolonged jaundice group (61.5%) Time to reach birth-weight was longer in infants with prolonged jaundice than control group (p = 0.02). The underlying etiologies of prolonged jaundice were as follows: breast milk (45%), congenital hypothyroidism (9.9%) and urinary tract infection (4.4%). CONCLUSIONS: Determining the main causes of prolonged jaundice in neonates is of paramount importance. In the majority of cases, neonatal hyperbilirubinemia is associated with physiological factors like breastfeeding. Kedi tırmığı hastalığı Bartonella henselae’nin neden olduğu enfeksiyöz bir hastalıktır. Daha çok yavru kedilerden geçmektedir. İmmun sistemi zayıf olan kişilerde sistemik hastalık yapabilmesine karşın çoğu zaman lokal enfeksiyon ve ağrılı lenfadenitle seyretmektedir. Günümüzde tanıda seroloji ve PCR büyük kolaylık sağlamaktadır. Bu hastalık bilinenden daha fazla olabilir. Akla gelmesi tanı ve tedavide kolaylık sağlayacaktır. Ağrılı lenfadeniti olan, amoksisiline yanıt vermeyince yapılan serolojik testte Bartonella henselae antikorlarını tespit ederek tanısını koyduğumuz ve spesifik tedaviye yanıt veren 10 yaşındaki çocuk vakayı sunduk.

AIM: Infectious mononucleosis (IM), characterized by fever, lymphadenopathy and pharyngitis, is a common infectious disease caused by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). In this study, we performed a retrospective analysis of the clinical findings, laboratory data and management of children with IM due to EBV to find out the predictors of hospitalizations. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients under the age of 18 years who were diagnosed with IM between October 31, 2017 and October 31, 2018 at Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University Medical Faculty Hospital. The study population was categorized into three groups according to the age; the 0-4 years, 5-10 years, and above 10 years. Complaints, physical examination findings, laboratory data, complications and treatment strategies of the patients were compared in these groups. Factors associated with hospitalizations and predictors of hospitalization were also investigated. RESULTS: This study included 158 patients. The mean age of the patients was 88.9 ± 53.5 months and 93 (58.9%) were male. The most common complaint was fever (57.6%), and the most common physical examination finding was hepatomegaly (73.4%). Except for fever, rash, thrombocytopenia and AST elevation, no significant difference was found between the age groups and the clinical and laboratory findings. Antibiotic therapy was applied to 44% of the patients and 34.8% were hospitalized. Patients who needed hospitalization were more symptomatic, had more physical examination findings and had higher acute phase reactants. Presence of fever, palatal petechiae, or exudative tonsillitis and higher levels of C-reactive protein at presentation were found to be significant predictors of hospitalization CONCLUSIONS: More than one third of the children with IM required hospitalization. Presence of fever, palatal petechiae, or exudative tonsillitis and higher levels of C-reactive protein at presentation were associated with higher rates of hospitalizations. GİRİŞ: Ateş, lenfadenopati ve farenjit ile karakterize olan enfeksiyöz mononükleoz (IM), Epstein-Barr virüsünün (EBV) neden olduğu yaygın bir bulaşıcı hastalıktır. Bu çalışmada, EBV nedenli IM’li çocukların hastaneye yatış belirteçlerini belirlemek için klinik bulgular, laboratuvar veriler ve yönetimler geriye dönük olarak incelendi. GEREÇ VE YÖNTEMLER: Muğla Sıtkı Koçman Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Hastanesi'nde 31 Ekim 2017 - 31 Ekim 2018 tarihleri arasında, İM tanısı alan 18 yaş altındaki hastaların tıbbi kayıtları geriye dönük olarak incelendi. Çalışma popülasyonu, 0-4 yaş, 5-10 yaş ve 10 yaş üstü olmak üzere 3 gruba ayrıldı. Hastaların şikayet, fizik muayene bulguları, laboratuvar verileri, komplikasyonları ve tedavi stratejileri bu gruplarda karşılaştırıldı. Hastaneye yatışla ilişkili faktörler ve hastaneye yatışın belirteçleri de incelenmiştir. BULGULAR: Çalışmaya 158 hasta dahil edildi. Hastaların yaş ortalaması 88,9 ± 53,5 ay ve 93'ü (% 58,9) erkek idi. En sık görülen şikayet ateş (% 57,6), en sık görülen fizik muayene bulgusu hepatomegali (% 73,4) idi. Ateş, döküntü, trombositopeni ve AST artışının dışında, klinik ve laboratuvar bulguları ile yaş grupları arasında anlamlı bir fark bulunmadı. Hastaların % 44'üne antibiyotik tedavisi uygulandı ve hastaların % 34,8'i hastanede yatarak tedavi gördü. Hastaneye yatırılan hastaların daha fazla semptom ve fizik muayene bulgularına, daha yüksek akut faz reaktanlarına sahip oldukları saptandı. Hastaneye yatış için önemli olduğu saptanan değişkenler ateş, damakta peteşi veya eksudatif tonsillit varlığı ve başvuruda yüksek C-reaktif protein seviyeleri idi. SONUÇLAR: Enfeksiyöz mononükleozlu çocukların üçte birinden fazlası hastanede yattırılarak tedavi gördü. Ateş, palatal peteşi veya eksüdatif tonsillit varlığı ve başvuru sırasında yüksek C-reaktif protein düzeyleri daha yüksek hastaneye yatış oranları ile ilişkilendirildi.

Gelenekler, kuşaktan kuşağa ve toplumdan topluma geçen kültür mirasları, alışkanlıklar, bilgiler, töreler ve davranışlardır. Bebek bakımıyla ilgili bazı geleneklerde kundaklama gibi güncel tıbbi bilgiyle çelişen uygulamalar bulunmaktadır. Bu tür geleneksel uygulamaların eğitim sonrası büyük ölçüde azaldığı gözlenmektedir. Buna karşılık, ülkemizde bebek tuzlama gibi bazı yan etkileri ciddi sorunlara neden olan geleneksel uygulamaların pek çok yörede hala yaygın olarak uygulandığı bilinmektedir. Çocuk hekimlerinin görev yaptıkları bölgelerdeki halkın geleneklerini tanıması ve eğitici rol üstlenmesi çocuk sağlığının geliştirilmesi açısından önem arz etmektedir. Çalışmamızda Muğla ilimizde bebek bakımındaki geleneksel uygulamaların araştırılması amaçlanmıştır. Hastanemiz Çocuk Sağlığı ve Hastalıkları polikliniğine başvuran 305 anneye bebek bakımındaki geleneksel uygulamalara yönelik olarak anket uygulanmıştır. En sık gözlenen geleneksel uygulama %59,9 ile bebek tuzlama olmuştur. Annelerin eğitim süresiyle geleneksel uygulamalar arasında anlamlı ilişki olduğu görülmüştür. Sonuç olarak annelerin eğitilmesinin bebek bakımında zararlı olma potansiyeli olan geleneksel uygulamaları azaltabileceği kanısına varılmıştır., Traditions are cultural heritages, habits, information, customs and behaviors that pass from generation to generation and from society to society. Some traditions related to infant care have conflicting practices such as swaddling. It is observed that such traditional practices have been greatly reduced after training. On the other hand, it is known that traditional applications which cause serious problems such as baby salting in our country are still widely used in many regions. It is important for the pediatricians to recognize the traditions of the people in the regions where they work and to take the role of educators. In our study, we aimed to investigate the traditional practices of baby care in Muğla. The questionnaire was applied to 305 mothers who applied to the pediatric outpatient clinic of our hospital. The most common traditional practice was the baby salting with 59.9%. It was found that there was a significant relationship between mothers’ education duration and traditional practices. As a result, it has been concluded that training of mothers may reduce the traditional practices that have the potential to be harmful in baby care.

Well-childsurveillance offers very useful opportunities for the delivery ofevidence-based preventive health services and the healthy growth anddevelopment of children. The aim of the study was to evaluate theimplementation of Well-child monitoring in our country. By using the microdataof Turkey Health Survey (2014) of the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), across-sectional study was carried out. With in the scope of the study, theresults of the questionnaires on the data of 3025 individuals between 0-6 yearsof age were evaluated. 922 (30.5%) of the children were brought to the healthinstitution for a routine control at least once during the period when theywere healthy in the last 12 months. Among the ones with the lowest incomes, theratio of those, who were , was the lowest (21.3%).In our country, monitoringpurposes are inadequate during periods when children are healthy and the levelof income affects the rate of well-child monitoring., Sağlam çocuk izlemleri, kanıta dayalı koruyucusağlık hizmetlerinin sunulması ve çocukların sağlıklı büyüyüp gelişmesinde çokyararlı fırsatlar sunmaktadır. Çalışma ile ülkemizdeki sağlam çocuk izlem uygulamasınındeğerlendirilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Türkiye İstatistik Kurumu (TÜİK)’nun TürkiyeSağlık Araştırması 2014 yılı mikro verileri kullanılarak kesitsel bir araştırmayapılmıştır. Çalışma kapsamında 0-6 yaş arasında bulunan toplam 3025 bireye aitveriler üzerinde yapılan anket sonuçlarının değerlendirilmesi yapılmıştır. Çocukların922 (%30.5)’si son 12 ay içinde sağlıklı olduğu dönemde (rutin kontrol için) enaz bir kez sağlık kuruluşuna getirilmiştir. Gelir düzeyi en düşük olanlardarutin sağlam çocuk kontrolüne getirilenlerin oranı en düşük (%21.3) bulundu. Ülkemizdeçocukların sağlıklı olduğu dönemlerde kontrol amaçlı izlemlerinin yetersizolduğu ve gelir düzeyinin, ailelerin çocuklarının izleme getirilme oranlarınıetkilediği gözlenmiştir.

Diazinon (DI) is an organophosphate. Thymoquinone (TQ) is produced from Nigella sativa: This study was a biochemical investigation of the protective properties of TQ as a supportive treatment in brain damage caused by diazinon. Rats were divided into four groups of eight, as follows: Group 1, control; group 2, DI; group 3, DI + TQ; and group 4, TQ. Groups 2 and 3 received DI. Groups 3 and 4 received TQ. In group 2, NO levels were higher and SOD levels were lower compared to the control group. In groups 3 and 4, NO levels were lower and SOD levels were higher than in either the control or group 2. In group 4, DNA damage was lower than in group 2, but the difference between groups 2 and 3 was not significant. The results suggest that TQ, because of its antioxidant properties, can be used to treat oxidative stress caused by DI intoxication.

Giriş: Methamidophos, bir pestisittir. Tarımda yaygın kullanılmaktadır. Tarımla uğraşan toplumlarda en büyük problemlerden bir tarım ilaçlarının güvenli depolanmasıdır. Olgularımız, depolama amaçlı tarım ilacının su şişesine konduğu ve aile fertlerinin de bunu bilmeden içtiği tespit edilmiştir. Acil servislerde toksikasyon şüpheli vakaları iyi incelenmeli, anamnezleri düzgün alınmalı, fizik muayaneleri ayrıntılı yapılmalıdır. Olgu Sunumu: Acil servise aynı aileden benzer şikâyetlerle başvuran dört olgu sunulmuştur. İlk olgu; evin küçük oğlu öksürük, nefes darlığı şikâyetiyle getirilmiş, bronşiolit ön tanısıyla yatırılmıştı. Serviste kısa süre sonra kardiopulmaner arrest gelişti, yapılan resüsitasyonla geri döndürüldü. Fizik muayenesinde miyosiz, vücut sekresyonlarında artış vardı. Bu sırada ablası da benzer şikâyetlerle getirildi. İki kardeşte benzer semptomlar görülünce bir zehirlenme ihtimaliyle evlerine babası ve polis gönderildi. Babanın evdeki bir su şişesinden su içmesi sırasında suyun kötü koktuğunu söylemesiyle su da tarım ilacı kokusu olduğu fark edilmiş. Babaya hemen tedavisi başlanmıştır. Aynı gün babaanneleri de acile getirilmişti, aynı sudan içtiği ve zehirlenmiş olduğu anlaşıldı. Yapılan incelemede suda methamidophos tespit edilmiştir. Sonuç: Acillerde özellikle zehirlenme şüpheli vakalar iyi değerlendirilmelidir. Hastanın yaşadığı ortam iyi incelenmeli ve olay yerinin güvenliği sağlanmalı başkalarının zehirlenmesi engellenmelidir. Halkımıza tarım ilaçlarının nasıl saklayacağı konusunda bilinçlendirilmesinin bu tür kazaları azaltacağı kanaatindeyiz., Introduction: Methamidophos is a pesticide. It is widely used in agriculture. Safe storage of pesticides is one of the main issues of agricultural societies. Here, we report four cases of family members who unknowingly consumed pesticide that was stored in a water bottle. Emergency must be on the alert for intoxication.Case Report: We report four cases from the same family with similar complaints admitted to the emergency room. Case one: A 3-year-old boy suffering from cough and shortness of breath, diagnosed as bronchiolitis. A short time after hospitalization, he had cardiopulmonary arrest but responded to resuscitation. His physical examination revealed miosis and hypersecretion. In the meantime, his elder sister was brought to the ER with similar symptoms. Their father and the police were sent to the home to search for possible intoxication. The father noticed an unpleasant smell after he drank from a water bottle. The father and grandmother, who also drank water from the same bottle, received treatment for intoxication. Methamidophos was detected with water analysis.Conclusion: Intoxication cases should be evaluated extensively in the emergency room. The patient’s home place must be examined and prevented for further intoxication cases. We believe that education about safe storage of pesticides will reduce this kind of accident

Amaç: Tamamlayıcı ve alternatif tıp uygulamalarının kronik hastalıklarda kullanımı artmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı talasemili hastalarda tamamlayıcı ve alternatif tıp kullanımının değerlendirilmesidir.Gereç ve Yöntemler: Hastanemizde izlenen 64 talasemili hastanın kendisi veya anne-babası ile görüşülerek tamamlayıcı ve alternatif tıp uygulamalarına ilişkin sorulardan oluşan anket uygulaması ile bu çalışma gerçekleştirilmiştir.Bulgular: Hastaların 33’ü (% 51.6) alternatif tedavi yöntemlerinden bir ya da daha fazlasını kullanmıştı. En sık kullanılan yöntem 17 (% 26.6) hastada olan bitkisel ürün kullanımı olarak belirlenmiştir. Tamamlayıcı ve alternatif tıp uygulamaları ile anne baba eğitim düzeyi ve sosyoekonomik düzey arasında anlamlı bir ilişki bulunmamıştır.Sonuç: Tüm kronik hastalıklarda olduğu gibi talasemili hastalarda da tamamlayıcı ve alternatif tedavi yöntemleri sıklıkla kullanılmaktadır. Tamamlayıcı ve alternatif tedavi yöntemlerinin doğal olduğuna inanıldığı için yan etkileri çoğu zaman gözardı edilmektedir. Kronik hastalıkları olan hastaların izleminde bu konuda ailelerin bilgilendirilmesinin olumsuz sonuçların önlenmesinde etkili olacağına inanılmaktadır., Objective: The use of complementary/alternative medicine has increased especially for chronic diseases.in recent years .In this study, we aimed to evaluate use of complementary/alternative medicine in thalassemia patients.Material and Methods: A standard questionnaire on complementary/alternative medicine was administered to 64 thalassemia patients or their parents.Results: Of these 64 patients; 33 (51.6%) used one or more alternative/complementary medicine methods. The most frequently used complementary/alternative medicine method was the use of herbal medicine reported in 17 (26.6%). Neither parental education nor socio-economic status was related with the use of complementary/alternative medicine.Conclusion: Complementary/alternative medicine is frequently used for thalassemia as for other chronic diseases. Educating patients and parents about the possible risk factors of using alternative/complementary medicine can help decrease the unfavorable results of such products
