Search

Methods of optical dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) open the door to the replenishable hyperpolarization of nuclear spins, boosting their NMR/MRI signature by orders of magnitude. Nanodiamond powder rich in negatively charged Nitrogen Vacancy (NV) defect centers has recently emerged as one such promising platform, wherein 13C nuclei can be hyperpolarized through the optically pumped defects completely at room temperature and at low magnetic fields. Given the compelling possibility of relaying this 13C polarization to nuclei in external liquids, there is an urgent need for the engineered production of highly "hyperpolarizable" diamond particles. In this paper, we report on a systematic study of various material dimensions affecting optical 13C hyperpolarization in diamond particles -- especially electron irradiation and annealing conditions that drive NV center formation. We discover surprisingly that diamond annealing at elevated temperatures close to 1720C have remarkable effects on the hyperpolarization levels, enhancing them by upto 36-fold over materials annealed through conventional means. We unravel the intriguing material origins of these gains, and demonstrate they arise from a simultaneous improvement in NV electron relaxation time and coherence time, as well as the reduction of paramagnetic content, and an increase in 13C relaxation lifetimes. Overall this points to significant recovery of the diamond lattice from radiation damage as a result of the high-temperature annealing. We search the five CANDELS fields (COSMOS, EGS, GOODS-North, GOODS-South and UDS) for passively evolving a.k.a. "red and dead" massive galaxies in the first 2 Gyr after the Big Bang, integrating and updating the work on GOODS-South presented in our previous paper. We perform SED-fitting on photometric data, with top-hat star-formation histories to model an early and abrupt quenching, and using a probabilistic approach to select only robust candidates. Using libraries without (with) spectral lines emission, starting from a total of more than 20,000 $z>3$ sources we end up with 102 (40) candidates, including one at $z=6.7$. This implies a minimal number density of $1.73 \pm 0.17 \times 10^{-5}$ ($6.69 \pm 1.08 \times 10^{-6}$) Mpc$^{-3}$ for $3

The selection of red, passive galaxies in the early Universe is very challenging, especially beyond z~3, and it is crucial to constrain theoretical modelling of the processes responsible for their rapid assembly and abrupt shut-down of the star formation. We present here the analysis of ALMA archival observations of 26 out of the 30 galaxies in the deep CANDELS GOODS-South field that we identified as passive at z~3-5 by means of a careful and conservative SED fitting analysis. ALMA data are used to verify the potential contamination from red, dusty but star--forming sources that could enter the sample due to similar optical--nearIR colours. With the exception of a few marginal detections at <3sigma, we could only infer upper limits, both on individual sources and on the stacks. We translated the ALMA continuum measurements into corresponding SFRs, using a variety of far-IR models. These SFRs are compared with those predicted by secondary star-forming solutions of the optical fits and with the expected position of the star formation Main Sequence. This analysis confirms the passive nature of 9 candidates with high confidence and suggests that the classification is correct for at least half of the sample in a statistical sense. For the remaining sources the analysis remain inconclusive because available ALMA data is not deep enough, although the stacking results corroborate their passive nature. The main aim of this experiment is to provide a complete census of old (t > 10 Gyr, RR Lyrae, type II Cepheids, red horizontal branch), intermediate age (red clump, Miras) and young (classical Cepheids) stellar tracers across the Galactic Bulge. To fully exploit the unique photometric quality of LSST images, we plan to perform a Shallow minisurvey (ugrizy, -20 < l < 20 deg, -15 < b < 10 deg) and a Deep minisurvey (izy, -20 < l < 20 deg, -3 < b < 3 deg). The former one is aimed at constraining the 3D structure of the galactic Bulge across the four quadrants, and in particular, the transition between inner and outer Bulge. The u,g,r,i,z,y LSST bands provide fundamental diagnostics to constrain the evolutionary properties of low and intermediate-mass stars when moving from a metal-poor to a metal-rich regime. The deep minisurvey is aimed at tracing RR Lyrae, Red Clump stars, Miras and classical Cepheids in highly reddened regions of the Galactic center. We present A-PHOT, a new publicly available code for performing aperture photometry on astronomical images, that is particularly well suited for multi-band extragalactic surveys. A-PHOT estimates the fluxes emitted by astronomical objects within a chosen set of circular or elliptical apertures. Unlike other widely used codes, it runs on predefined lists of positions, allowing for repeated measurements on the same list of objects on different images. This can be very useful when forced photometric measurement on a given position is needed. A-PHOT can also estimate morphological parameters and a local background flux, and compute on-the-fly individual optimized elliptical apertures, in which the signal-to-noise ratio is maximized. We check the performance of A-PHOT on both synthetic and real test datasets: we explore a simulated case of a space-based high-resolution imaging dataset, investigating the input parameter space to optimize the accuracy of the performance, and we exploit the CANDELS GOODS-South data to compare the A-PHOT measurements with those from the survey legacy catalogs, finding good agreement overall. A-PHOT proves to a useful and versatile tool for quickly extracting robust and accurate photometric measurements and basic morphological information of galaxies and stars, with the advantage of allowing for various measurements of fluxes at any chosen position without the need of a full detection run, and for determining the basic morphological features of the sources., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

We search for passive galaxies at $z>3$ in the GOODS-South field, using different techniques based on photometric data, and paying attention to develop methods that are sensitive to objects that have become passive shortly before the epoch of observation. We use CANDELS HST catalogues, ultra-deep $Ks$ data and new IRAC photometry, performing spectral energy distribution fitting using models with abruptly quenched star formation histories. We then single out galaxies which are best fitted by a passively evolving model, and having only low probability $( < 5 \%)$ star-forming solutions. We verify the effects of including nebular lines emission, and we consider possible solutions at different redshifts. The number of selected sources dramatically depends on the models used in the SED fitting. Without including emission lines and with photometric redshifts fixed at the CANDELS estimate, we single out 30 candidates; the inclusion of nebular lines emission reduces the sample to 10 objects; allowing for solutions at different redshifts, only 2 galaxies survive as robust candidates. Most of the candidates are not far-infrared emitters, corroborating their association with passive galaxies. Our results translate into an upper limit in the number density of $\sim 0.173$ arcmin$^2$ above the detection limit. However, we conclude that the selection of passive galaxies at $z>3$ is still subject to significant uncertainties, being sensitive to assumptions in the SED modeling adopted and to the relatively low S/N of the objects. The pressure induced quantum phase transition of the weakly itinerant ferromagnet MnSi is studied using zero-field $^{29}Si$ NMR spectroscopy and relaxation. Below $P^*\approx 1.2GPa$, the intensity of the signal and the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation is independent of pressure, even though the amplitude of the magnetization drops by 20% from the ambient pressure amplitude. For $P>P^*$, the decreasing intensity within the experimentally detectable bandwidth signals the onset of an inhomogeneous phase that persists to the highest pressure measured, $P\ge 1.75GPa$, which is well beyond the known critical pressure $P_c=1.46GPa$. Implications for the non-Fermi Liquid behavior observed for $P>P_c$ are discussed., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Neutron-diffraction measurements in LaCrSb{3} show a coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic sublattices below Tc=126 K, with ordered moments of 1.65(4) and 0.49(4) Bohr magnetons per formula unit, respectively (T=10 K), and a spin reorientation transition at ~95 K. No clear peak or step was observed in the specific heat at Tc. Coexisting localized and itinerant spins are suggested., Comment: PRL, in press

This paper presents the status of the APEmille project, which is essentially completed, as far as machine development and construction is concerned. Several large installations of APEmille are in use for physics production runs leading to many new results presented at this conference. The local environment of Gd3+ (4f7 S=7/2) ions in single crystals of Ca1-xGdxB6 (0.0001 < x < 0.01) is studied by means of Electron Spin Resonance (ESR). The spectra for low concentration samples (x < 0.001) show a split spectrum due to cubic crystal field effects(CFE). The lineshape of each fine structure line is lorentzian, indicating an insulating environment for the Gd3+ ions. For higher concentrations (0.003 < x < 0.01), the spectra show a single resonance (g=1.992(4), DH1/2 ~ 30-60 Oe) with no CFE and dysonian lineshape indicating metallic environment for the Gd3+ ions. For intermediate concentrations, a coexistence of spectra corresponding to insulating and metallic regions is observed. Most of the measured samples show the weak ferromagnetism (WF) as reported for Ca1-xLaxB6 (x ~ 0.005), but, surprisingly, this WF has no effect in our ESR spectra either for metallic or insulating environments. This result suggests that the ferromagnetism in these systems might be isolated in clusters (defect-rich regions) and its relationship with metallicity is nontrivial., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 27 references

We report on the progress and status of the APEmille project: a SIMD parallel computer with a peak performance in the TeraFlops range which is now in an advanced development phase. We present results for the Kaon $B$ parameter from a sample of $200$ configurations using the Wilson action and $460$ configurations using the Clover action, on a $18^3 \times 64$ lattice at $\beta=6.0$. A slight improvement of the chiral behaviour of $B_K$ is observed due to the Clover action. We have also compared the results for $B_K$ obtained from two different procedures for the boosting of the coupling constant $g$. We observe a strong dependence of $B_K$ on the prescription adopted for $g$ in the Wilson case, contrary to the results of the Clover case which are almost unaffected by the choice of $g$. We present numerical results obtained in full QCD with 2 flavors of Wilson fermions. We discuss the relation between the phase of Polyakov loops and the {\bf sea} quarks boundary conditions. We present the results of a high statistics lattice calculation of hadronic form factors relevant for $D-$ and $B-$meson semi-leptonic decays into light pseudoscalar and vector mesons. The results have been obtained by averaging over 170 gauge field configurations, generated in the quenched approximation, at $\beta=6.0$, on a $18^3 \times 64$ lattice, using the $O(a)$-improved SW-Clover action.From the study of the matrix element $$, we obtain $f_+ (0)=0.78\pm 0.08$ and from the matrix element $<\bar K^{* 0}\vert J_\mu \vert D^+>$ we obtain $V(0)=1.08\pm 0.22$, $A_1(0)=0.67\pm 0.11$ and $A_2(0)=0.49\pm 0.34$. We also obtain the ratios $V(0)/A_1(0)=1.6\pm 0.3$ and $A_2(0)/A_1(0)= 0.7\pm 0.4$. Our predictions for the different form factors are in good agreement with the experimental data, although, in the case of $A_2(0)$, the errors are still too large to draw any firm conclusion. With the help of the Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET) we have also extrapolated the lattice results to $B$-meson decays. The form factors follow a behaviour compatible with the HQET predictions. The polarization of Polyakov type loops is responsible for the difference between quenched and unquenched finite size effects on the QCD mass spectrum. With a numerical simulation, using different sea quarks boundary conditions, we show that we can align the spatial Polyakov loops in a predefined direction. We present a calculation of $f_B$ in the static limit, obtained by numerical simulation of quenched QCD, at $\beta=6.2$ on a $18^3 \times 64$ lattice, using the SW-Clover quark action. The decay constant has been extracted by studying heavy(static)-light correlation functions of different smeared operators, on a sample of 220 gauge field configurations. We have obtained $f_B^{static}=(290 \pm 15 \pm 45)$ MeV, where the first error comes from the uncertainty in the determination of the matrix element and the second comes from the uncertainty in the lattice spacing. We also obtain $M_{B_s}-M_{B_d}= (70 \pm 10)$ MeV and $f^{stat}_{B_s}/f^{stat}_{B_d}=1.11(3)$.
