2. Generation of 480 nm picosecond pulses for ultrafast excitation of Rydberg atoms

Abstract

Atoms in Rydberg states are an important building block for emerging quantum technologies. While the excitation to the Rydberg orbitals are typically achieved in more than tens of nanoseconds, the physical limit is in fact much faster, at the ten picoseconds level. Here, we tackle such ultrafast Rydberg excitation of a Rubidium atom by designing a dedicated pulsed laser system generating 480 nm pulses of 10 ps duration. In particular, we improved upon our previous design by using an injection-seeded optical parametric amplifier (OPA) to obtain stable pulsed energy, decreasing the fluctuation from 30 % to 6 %. We then succeeded in ultrafast excitation of Rydberg atoms with excitation probability of ~90 %, not limited anymore by energy fluctuation but rather by the atomic state preparation, addressable in future works. This achievement broadens the range of applications of Rydberg atoms.

3. Ultra-precise holographic optical tweezers array

Abstract

Neutral atoms trapped in microscopic optical tweezers have emerged as a growing platform for quantum science. Achieving homogeneity over the tweezers array is an important technical requirement, and our research focuses on improving it for holographic arrays generated with a Spatial Light Modulator (SLM). We present a series of optimization methods to calculate better holograms, fueled by precise measurement schemes. These innovations enable to achieve intensity homogeneity with a relative standard deviation of 0.3 %, shape variations below 0.5 %, and positioning errors within 70 nm. Such ultra-precise holographic optical tweezers arrays allow for the most demanding applications in quantum science with atomic arrays.

Abstract

The PHENIX experiment measured the centrality dependence of two-pion Bose-Einstein correlation functions in $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV Au$+$Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The data are well represented by L\'evy-stable source distributions. The extracted source parameters are the correlation-strength parameter $\lambda$, the L\'evy index of stability $\alpha$, and the L\'evy-scale parameter $R$ as a function of transverse mass $m_T$ and centrality. The $\lambda(m_T)$ parameter is constant at larger values of $m_T$, but decreases as $m_T$ decreases. The L\'evy scale parameter $R(m_T)$ decreases with $m_T$ and exhibits proportionality to the length scale of the nuclear overlap region. The L\'evy exponent $\alpha(m_T)$ is independent of $m_T$ within uncertainties in each investigated centrality bin, but shows a clear centrality dependence. At all centralities, the L\'evy exponent $\alpha$ is significantly different from that of Gaussian ($\alpha=2$) or Cauchy ($\alpha=1$) source distributions. Comparisons to the predictions of Monte-Carlo simulations of resonance-decay chains show that in all but the most peripheral centrality class (50%-60%), the obtained results are inconsistent with the measurements, unless a significant reduction of the in-medium mass of the $\eta'$ meson is included. In each centrality class, the best value of the in-medium $\eta'$ mass is compared to the mass of the $\eta$ meson, as well as to several theoretical predictions that consider restoration of $U_A(1)$ symmetry in hot hadronic matter., Comment: 401 authors from 75 institutions, 20 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables. v1 is version submitted to Physical Review C. 5. Limitation of single-repumping schemes for laser cooling of Sr atoms

Abstract

We explore the efficacy of two single-repumping schemes, $5s5p \,{}^3P_2 - 5p^2 \,{}^3P_2$ ($481\,\mathrm{nm}$) and $5s5p \,{}^3P_2 - 5s5d \,{}^3D_2$ ($497\,\mathrm{nm}$), for a magneto-optical trap (MOT) of Sr atoms. We reveal that the enhancement in the MOT lifetime is limited to $26.9(2)$ for any single-repumping scheme. Our investigation indicates that the primary decay path from the $5s5p \,{}^1P_1$ state to the $5s5p \,{}^3P_0$ state proceeds via the $5s4d \,{}^3D_1$ state, rather than through the upper states accessed by the single-repumping lasers. We estimate that the branching ratio for the $5s5p \,{}^1P_1 \to 5s4d \,{}^3D_1 \to 5s5p \,{}^3P_0$ decay path is $1:3.9 \times 10^6$ and the decay rate for the transition from the $5s5p \,{}^1P_1$ state to the $5s4d \,{}^3D_1$ state is $83(32)\,\mathrm{s^{-1}}$. This outcome underscores the limitation on atom number in the MOT for long loading times ($\gtrsim 1 \,\mathrm{s}$) when employing a single-repumping scheme. Abstract

The GRAINE project observes cosmic gamma-rays, using a balloon-borne emulsion-film-based telescope in the sub-GeV/GeV energy band. We reported in our previous balloon experiment in 2018, GRAINE2018, the detection of the known brightest source, Vela pulsar, with the highest angular resolution ever reported in an energy range of $>$80 MeV. However, the emulsion scanning system used in the experiment was designed to achieve a high-speed scanning, and it was not accurate enough to ensure the optimum spacial resolution of the emulsion film and limited the performance. Here, we report a new high-precision scanning system that can be used to greatly improve the observation result of GRAINE2018 and also be employed in future experiments. The system involves a new algorithm that recognizes each silver grain on an emulsion film and is capable of measuring tracks with a positional resolution for the passing points of tracks of almost the same as the intrinsic resolution of nuclear emulsion film ($\sim$70 nm). This resolution is approximately one order of magnitude smaller than that obtained with the high-speed scanning system. With this system, an angular resolution for gamma-rays of 0.1$^\circ$ at 1 GeV is expected to be achieved. Furthermore, we successfully combine the new high-precision system with the existing high-speed system, establishing the system to make a high-speed and high-precision measurement. Employing these systems, we reanalyze the gamma-ray events detected previously by only the high-speed system in GRAINE2018 and obtain an about three times higher angular resolution (0.22$^\circ$) in 500--700 MeV than the original value. Abstract

High-momentum two-particle correlations are a useful tool for studying jet-quenching effects in the quark-gluon plasma. Angular correlations between neutral-pion triggers and charged hadrons with transverse momenta in the range 4--12~GeV/$c$ and 0.5--7~GeV/$c$, respectively, have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV. Suppression is observed in the yield of high-momentum jet fragments opposite the trigger particle, which indicates jet suppression stemming from in-medium partonic energy loss, while enhancement is observed for low-momentum particles. The ratio and differences between the yield in Au$+$Au collisions and $p$$+$$p$ collisions, $I_{AA}$ and $\Delta_{AA}$, as a function of the trigger-hadron azimuthal separation, $\Delta\phi$, are measured for the first time at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Abstract

In this paper we give an example of duoidal $\infty$-categories. We introduce map $\mathcal{O}$-monoidales in an $\mathcal{O}$-monoidal $(\infty,2)$-category for an $\infty$-operad $\mathcal{O}^{\otimes}$. We show that the endomorphism mapping $\infty$-category of a map $\mathcal{O}$-monoidale is a coCartesian $(\Delta^{\rm op},\mathcal{O})$-duoidal $\infty$-category. After that, we introduce a convolution product on the mapping $\infty$-category from an $\mathcal{O}$-comonoidale to an $\mathcal{O}$-monoidale. We show that the $\mathcal{O}$-monoidal structure on the duoidal endomorphism mapping $\infty$-category of a map $\mathcal{O}$-monoidale is equivalent to the convolution product on the mapping $\infty$-category from the dual $\mathcal{O}$-comonoidale to the map $\mathcal{O}$-monoidale., Comment: 35 pages

10. Revisiting Relevance Feedback for CLIP-based Interactive Image Retrieval

Abstract

Many image retrieval studies use metric learning to train an image encoder. However, metric learning cannot handle differences in users' preferences, and requires data to train an image encoder. To overcome these limitations, we revisit relevance feedback, a classic technique for interactive retrieval systems, and propose an interactive CLIP-based image retrieval system with relevance feedback. Our retrieval system first executes the retrieval, collects each user's unique preferences through binary feedback, and returns images the user prefers. Even when users have various preferences, our retrieval system learns each user's preference through the feedback and adapts to the preference. Moreover, our retrieval system leverages CLIP's zero-shot transferability and achieves high accuracy without training. We empirically show that our retrieval system competes well with state-of-the-art metric learning in category-based image retrieval, despite not training image encoders specifically for each dataset. Furthermore, we set up two additional experimental settings where users have various preferences: one-label-based image retrieval and conditioned image retrieval. In both cases, our retrieval system effectively adapts to each user's preferences, resulting in improved accuracy compared to image retrieval without feedback. Let ${\rm N}_m(R) = \{ (a_{ij}) \in {\rm M}_m(R) \mid a_{11} = a_{22} = \cdots = a_{mm} \mbox{ and } a_{ij} = 0 \mbox{ for any } i > j \}$ for a commutative ring $R$. Then ${\rm N}_m(R)$ is a quadratic monomial algebra over $R$. We calculate ${\rm HH}^{\ast}({\rm N}_m(R), {\rm M}_m(R)/{\rm N}_m(R))$ as $R$-modules. We also determine the $R$-algebra structure of the Hochschild cohomology ring ${\rm HH}^{\ast}({\rm N}_m(R), {\rm N}_m(R))$. 13. Global N-body Simulation of Gap Edge Structures Created by Perturbations from a Small Satellite Embedded in Saturn's Rings

Abstract

Observations by the Voyager and Cassini spacecrafts have revealed various striking features of the gap structure in Saturn's ring, such as the density waves, sharp edge, and vertical wall structure. In order to explain these features in a single simulation, we perform a high-resolution (N~10^6-10^7) global full N-body simulation of gap formation by an embedded satellite considering gravitational interactions and inelastic collisions among all ring particles and the satellite, while these features have been mostly investigated separately with different theoretical approaches: the streamline models, 1D diffusion models, and local N-body simulation. As a first attempt of a series of papers, we here focus on the gap formation by separating satellite migration with fixing the satellite orbit in a Keplerian circular orbit. We reveal how the striking gap features - the density waves, sharp edge, and vertical wall structure - are simultaneously formed by an interplay of the satellite-ring and ring particle-particle interactions. In particular, we propose a new mechanism to quantitatively explain the creation of the vertical wall structure at the gap edge. Inelastic collisions between ring particles damp their eccentricity excited by the satellite's perturbations to enhance the surface density at the gap edge, making its sharp edges more pronounced. We find the eccentricity damping process inevitably raises the vertical wall structures the most effectively in the second epicycle waves. Particle-particle collisions generally convert their lateral epicyclic motion into vertical motion. Because the excited epicyclic motion is the greatest near the ring edge and the epicycle motions are aligned in the first waves, the conversion is the most efficient in the gap edge of the second waves and the wall height is scaled by the satellite Hill radius, which are consistent with the observations., Comment: 27 pages, 23 figures, accepted for publication in Icarus

Abstract

How would research be like if we still needed to "send" papers typed with a typewriter? Our life and research environment have continually evolved, often accompanied by controversial opinions about new methodologies. In this paper, we embrace this change by introducing a new approach to qualitative analysis in HCI using Large Language Models (LLMs). We detail a method that uses LLMs for qualitative data analysis and present a quantitative framework using SBART cosine similarity for performance evaluation. Our findings indicate that LLMs not only match the efficacy of traditional analysis methods but also offer unique insights. Through a novel dataset and benchmark, we explore LLMs' characteristics in HCI research, suggesting potential avenues for further exploration and application in the field.

Abstract

The PHENIX experiment has performed a systematic study of identified charged-hadron ($\pi^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $p$, $\bar{p}$) production at midrapidity in $p$$+$Al, $^3$He$+$Au, Cu$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV and U$+$U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=193$ GeV. Identified charged-hadron invariant transverse-momentum ($p_T$) and transverse-mass ($m_T$) spectra are presented and interpreted in terms of radially expanding thermalized systems. The particle ratios of $K/\pi$ and $p/\pi$ have been measured in different centrality ranges of large (Cu$+$Au, U$+$U) and small ($p$$+$Al, $^3$He$+$Au) collision systems. The values of $K/\pi$ ratios measured in all considered collision systems were found to be consistent with those measured in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. However the values of $p/\pi$ ratios measured in large collision systems reach the values of $\approx0.6$, which is $\approx2$ times larger than in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. These results can be qualitatively understood in terms of the baryon enhancement expected from hadronization by recombination. Identified charged-hadron nuclear-modification factors ($R_{AB}$) are also presented. Enhancement of proton $R_{AB}$ values over meson $R_{AB}$ values was observed in central $^3$He$+$Au, Cu$+$Au, and U$+$U collisions. The proton $R_{AB}$ values measured in $p$$+$Al collision system were found to be consistent with $R_{AB}$ values of $\phi$, $\pi^\pm$, $K^\pm$, and $\pi^0$ mesons, which may indicate that the size of the system produced in $p$$+$Al collisions is too small for recombination to cause a noticeable increase in proton production., Comment: 480 authors from 78 institutions, 18 pages, 6 tables, 16 figures. v2 is version accepted for publication in Physical Review C. Abstract

Detailed measurements of the spectral structure of cosmic-ray electrons and positrons from 10.6 GeV to 7.5 TeV are presented from over 7 years of observations with the CALorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET) on the International Space Station. Because of the excellent energy resolution (a few percent above 10 GeV) and the outstanding e/p separation (10$^5$), CALET provides optimal performance for a detailed search of structures in the energy spectrum. The analysis uses data up to the end of 2022, and the statistics of observed electron candidates has increased more than 3 times since the last publication in 2018. By adopting an updated boosted decision tree analysis, a sufficient proton rejection power up to 7.5 TeV is achieved, with a residual proton contamination less than 10%. The observed energy spectrum becomes gradually harder in the lower energy region from around 30 GeV, consistently with AMS-02, but from 300 to 600 GeV it is considerably softer than the spectra measured by DAMPE and Fermi-LAT. At high energies, the spectrum presents a sharp break around 1 TeV, with a spectral index change from -3.15 to -3.91, and a broken power law fitting the data in the energy range from 30 GeV to 4.8 TeV better than a single power law with 6.9 sigma significance, which is compatible with the DAMPE results. The break is consistent with the expected effects of radiation loss during the propagation from distant sources (except the highest energy bin). We have fitted the spectrum with a model consistent with the positron flux measured by AMS-02 below 1 TeV and interpreted the electron + positron spectrum with possible contributions from pulsars and nearby sources. Abstract

Transverse single-spin asymmetries $A_{\textrm{N}}$ of forward neutrons at pseudorapidities larger than 6 had only been studied in the transverse momentum range of $p_{\textrm{T}} < 0.4$ GeV/$c$. The RHICf Collaboration has extended the previous measurements up to 1.0 GeV/$c$ in polarized $p+p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}~=~510$GeV, using an electromagnetic calorimeter installed in the zero-degree area of the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The resulting $A_{\textrm{N}}$s increase in magnitude with $p_{\textrm{T}}$ in the high longitudinal momentum fraction $x_{\textrm{F}}$ range, but reach a plateau at lower $p_{\textrm{T}}$ for lower $x_{\textrm{F}}$. For low transverse momenta the $A_{\textrm{N}}$s show little $x_{\textrm{F}}$ dependence and level off from intermediate values. For higher transverse momenta the $A_{\textrm{N}}$s show also an indication to reach a plateau at increased magnitudes. The results are consistent with previous measurements at lower collision energies, suggesting no $\sqrt{s}$ dependence of the neutron asymmetries. A theoretical model based on the interference of $\pi$ and $a_1$ exchange between two protons could partially reproduce the current results, however an additional mechanism is necessary to describe the neutron $A_{\textrm{N}}$s over the whole kinematic region measured., Comment: Submitted to PRD

26. Robinson-Trautman solutions with scalar hair and Ricci flow

Abstract

The vacuum Robinson-Trautman solution admits a shear-free and twist-free null geodesic congruence with a nonvanishing expansion. We perform a comprehensive classification of solutions exhibiting this property in Einstein's gravity with a massless scalar field, assuming that the solution belongs at least to Petrov-type II and some of the components of Ricci tensor identically vanish. We find that these solutions can be grouped into three distinct classes: (I-a) a natural extension of the Robinson-Trautman family incorporating a scalar hair satisfying the time derivative of the Ricci flow equation, (I-b) a novel non-asymptotically flat solution characterized by two functions satisfying Perelman's pair of the Ricci flow equations, and (II) a dynamical solution possessing ${\rm SO}(3)$, ${\rm ISO}(2)$ or ${\rm SO}(1,2)$ symmetry. We provide a complete list of all explicit solutions falling into Petrov type D for classes (I-a) and (I-b). Moreover, leveraging the massless solution in class (I-a), we derive the neutral Robinson-Trautman solution to the ${\cal N}=2$ gauged supergravity with the prepotential $F(X) =-iX^0X^1$. By flipping the sign of the kinetic term of the scalar field, the Petrov-D class (I-a) solution leads to a time-dependent wormhole with an instantaneous spacetime singularity. Abstract

Understanding customer behavior in retail stores plays a crucial role in improving customer satisfaction by adding personalized value to services. Behavior analysis reveals both general and detailed patterns in the interaction of customers with a store items and other people, providing store managers with insight into customer preferences. Several solutions aim to utilize this data by recognizing specific behaviors through statistical visualization. However, current approaches are limited to the analysis of small customer behavior sets, utilizing conventional methods to detect behaviors. They do not use deep learning techniques such as deep neural networks, which are powerful methods in the field of computer vision. Furthermore, these methods provide limited figures when visualizing the behavioral data acquired by the system. In this study, we propose a framework that includes three primary parts: mathematical modeling of customer behaviors, behavior analysis using an efficient deep learning based system, and individual and group behavior visualization. Each module and the entire system were validated using data from actual situations in a retail store.

Abstract

Gamma rays from HESS J1849$-$000, a middle-aged TeV pulsar wind nebula (PWN), are observed by the Tibet air shower array and the muon detector array. The detection significance of gamma rays reaches $4.0\, \sigma$ and $4.4\, \sigma$ levels above 25 TeV and 100 TeV, respectively, in units of Gaussian standard deviation $\sigma$. The energy spectrum measured between $40\, {\rm TeV} < E < 320\, {\rm TeV}$ for the first time is described with a simple power-law function of ${\rm d}N/{\rm d}E = (2.86 \pm 1.44) \times 10^{-16}(E/40\, {\rm TeV})^{-2.24 \pm 0.41}\, {\rm TeV}^{-1}\, {\rm cm}^{-2}\, {\rm s}^{-1}$. The gamma-ray energy spectrum from the sub-TeV ($E < 1\, {\rm TeV}$) to sub-PeV ($100\, {\rm TeV} < E < 1\, {\rm PeV}$) ranges including the results of previous studies can be modeled with the leptonic scenario, inverse Compton scattering by high-energy electrons accelerated by the PWN of PSR J1849$-$0001. On the other hand, the gamma-ray energy spectrum can also be modeled with the hadronic scenario in which gamma rays are generated from the decay of neutral pions produced by collisions between accelerated cosmic-ray protons and the ambient molecular cloud found in the gamma-ray emitting region. The cutoff energy of cosmic-ray protons $E_{\rm p\, cut}$, cut is estimated at ${\rm log}_{10}(E_{\rm p,\, cut}/{\rm TeV}) = 3.73^{+2.98}_{-0.66}$, suggesting that protons are accelerated up to the PeV energy range. Abstract

HESS J1843$-$033 is a very-high-energy gamma-ray source whose origin remains unidentified. This work presents, for the first time, the energy spectrum of gamma rays beyond $100\, {\rm TeV}$ from the HESS J1843$-$033 region using the data recorded by the Tibet air shower array and its underground muon detector array. A gamma-ray source with an extension of $0.34^{\circ} \pm 0.12^{\circ}$ is successfully detected above $25\, {\rm TeV}$ at $(\alpha,\, \delta) = (281.09^{\circ}\pm 0.10^{\circ},\, -3.76^{\circ}\pm 0.09^{\circ})$ near HESS J1843$-$033 with a statistical significance of $6.2\, \sigma$, and the source is named TASG J1844$-$038. The position of TASG J1844$-$038 is consistent with those of HESS J1843$-$033, eHWC J1842$-$035, and LHAASO J1843$-$0338. The measured gamma-ray energy spectrum in $25\, {\rm TeV} < E < 130\, {\rm TeV}$ is described with ${\rm d}N/{\rm d}E = (9.70\pm 1.89)\times 10^{-16} (E/40\, {\rm TeV})^{-3.26\pm 0.30}\, {\rm TeV}^{-1} {\rm cm}^{-2} {\rm s}^{-1}$, and the spectral fit to the combined spectra of HESS J1843$-$033, LHAASO J1843$-$0338, and TASG J1844$-$038 implies the existence of a cutoff at $49.5\pm 9.0\, {\rm TeV}$. Abstract

Retrieval-augmented large language models (R-LLMs) combine pre-trained large language models (LLMs) with information retrieval systems to improve the accuracy of factual question-answering. However, current libraries for building R-LLMs provide high-level abstractions without sufficient transparency for evaluating and optimizing prompts within specific inference processes such as retrieval and generation. To address this gap, we present RaLLe, an open-source framework designed to facilitate the development, evaluation, and optimization of R-LLMs for knowledge-intensive tasks. With RaLLe, developers can easily develop and evaluate R-LLMs, improving hand-crafted prompts, assessing individual inference processes, and objectively measuring overall system performance quantitatively. By leveraging these features, developers can enhance the performance and accuracy of their R-LLMs in knowledge-intensive generation tasks. Abstract

Large Language Model (LLM) based Generative AI systems have seen significant progress in recent years. Integrating a knowledge retrieval architecture allows for seamless integration of private data into publicly available Generative AI systems using pre-trained LLM without requiring additional model fine-tuning. Moreover, Retrieval-Centric Generation (RCG) approach, a promising future research direction that explicitly separates roles of LLMs and retrievers in context interpretation and knowledge memorization, potentially leads to more efficient implementation. SimplyRetrieve is an open-source tool with the goal of providing a localized, lightweight, and user-friendly interface to these sophisticated advancements to the machine learning community. SimplyRetrieve features a GUI and API based RCG platform, assisted by a Private Knowledge Base Constructor and a Retrieval Tuning Module. By leveraging these capabilities, users can explore the potential of RCG for improving generative AI performance while maintaining privacy standards. Abstract

Early detection and diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD) could save lives and reduce healthcare costs. In this study, we propose a 3D Resnet-50 deep learning model to directly classify normal subjects and CAD patients on computed tomography coronary angiography images. Our proposed method outperforms a 2D Resnet-50 model by 23.65%. Explainability is also provided by using a Grad-GAM. Furthermore, we link the 3D CAD classification to a 2D two-class semantic segmentation for improved explainability and accurate abnormality localisation.

Abstract

In this paper, we present a novel approach using the Auto GPT system alongside Design Sprint methodology to facilitate board game creation for inexperienced users. We introduce the implementation of Auto GPT for generating diverse board games and the subsequent optimization process through a customized Design Sprint. A user study is conducted to investigate the playability and enjoyment of the generated games, revealing both successes and challenges in employing systems like Auto GPT for board game design.
