1. Performance of MT-I spherical tokamak with upgraded power supplies.

Abstract

This paper describes the upgradation of power supply systems for the improved performance of a small spherical tokamak (MT-I) with an aspect ratio of 1.67 in operation at the Pakistan Tokamak Plasma Research Institute (PTPRI), Islamabad. Three mutually independent power supplies are designed to generate current pulses of desired shape and magnitude in central solenoid (CS), toroidal field (TF) and vertical field (VF) coil systems. The main parts of a power supply are capacitor banks as energy storage devices, ignitrons and thyristors as fast switches for controlled power switching. A double capacitor bank topology with enhanced second capacitor bank voltage is found to be suitable for CS to improve the plasma startup conditions. Simulations are performed in MATLAB Simulink for confirmation of the designed power supply system. The Rogowski coil and current transformers are employed to measure plasma current and the coil’s current waveforms during the experiment in the presence of hydrogen as working gas. An ocean spectrometer and a photron high-speed camera (SA-8) are used for optical measurements and fast plasma imaging. An improvement in startup conditions is observed, enhancing the plasma current duration and light emission intensity recorded in the high-speed camera masked with a Hα filter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this article, we suggest and study a novel omnidirectional wireless power transfer (WPT) system based on unusual double-toroidal helix coils. The suggested antenna is a double-helix coil wounded around a torus. It creates two mutually orthogonal magnetic fields. One is toroidal and confined inside the torus, and another one is poloidal and is distributed outside it. The intensities of these two fields can be independently tuned via the geometry of the turns. The coupling coefficients are tailored to ensure high efficiency regardless of the receiver position and orientation, without active circuitry for tuning or control. This topology provides self-tuning functionality which is achieved when the coupling between the transmitter and receiver is minimized while the coupling in the pairs transmitter–repeater and repeater–receiver is strong. The system consists of three transmitter–repeater pairs orthogonal to each other, ensuring omnidirectional functionality. Experimental results confirm self-tunability and high efficiency for any position and orientation of receivers. Abstract

The requirements of the toroidal field magnet coil in HT-6M Tokamak are that the peak value of output current is large and the pulse width is narrow, which is a typical pulse form. In order to meet the requirements, the scheme of capacitor energy storage pulsed power supply is designed. In the early stage, in order to verify the rationality of power supply design, a prototype of the 500-kJ capacitor energy storage pulsed power supply is developed. In this article, the transient processes of power supply are analyzed in detail by establishing a mathematical model. The power parameters are calculated according to output requirements, and the function relationships between the power input and output are obtained, and the theoretical analysis is proved by simplorer simulations. At the same time, the key devices of the power supply and short circuit protection are analyzed and designed, the prototype is developed, and the design requirements can be met by experiments. Abstract

Eighteen Toroidal Field (TF) coils are operated on steady-state mode at highest current of 68 kA in comparison with the other pulse operation coils such as Poloidal Field and Central Solenoid coils in ITER superconductive magnet system, which are fed by Coil Power Supply Systema (CPSS). The reliability of TF circuit is significant to investment and nuclear safety of ITER machine. Hence, the comprehensive protection functions as Slow Discharge, Accelerated Discharge and Fast Discharge are required by ITER TF CPSS and the detailed realizations have been illustrated according to the different levels of faults to guarantee the safety of components including TF coils. In addition, the simulation model has been built by MATLAB/SIMULINK according to the real configuration of circuit and control system to verify the protection strategies and the satisfied simulation results have been obtained. Abstract

• The analytical formula of trapezoidal prism current source is used to accurately calculate the toroidal field of a TF coil system. • Basing on accurate calculation of the toroidal fields, an Optimized-D coil shape with improved tension constancy is obtained through a semi-analytical iteration process. • The effect of varying the number of TF coils N and radial coordinates r2 of outer leg on the height and length of the TF coil centerline is discussed. An ideal TF coil shape or centerline should be such that the TF coil is subjected to constant tension. The Princeton-D and the Modified-D are widely used as constant-tension centerlines for designing TF coil, however, our analyses show that their tensions are not fully constant. The reason is that the magnetic field used to calculate the centerlines is inaccurate. In this work, we propose an approach of calculating the Optimized-D shape with improved tension constancy. First, the Princeton-D and the Modified-D are introduced and their tension non-constancies are revealed. Then, a code is written to calculate the accurate toroidal fields. Next, the Optimized-D coil shape is obtained through a semi-analytical iteration process. Finally, for the three D shapes, the relationship between the TF coil parameters are discussed. Abstract

T he Comprehensive Research Facility for Fusion Technology (CRAFT), national big science facility in China, is focused on exploring key technologies and building prototype systems for the Chinese Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR). The toroidal field (TF) coil is one of the most important parts of CRAFT, targeting at manufacturing a prototype TF coil for CFETR. The TF coil is a gigantic “D” shape, which consists of a winding pack (WP) enclosed in the coil case. The winding pack is composed by embedding three sub-WPs, called low, medium, and high field WPs. The conductor of the high and medium WPs is fabricated from Nb3Sn, follow the “winding and reaction” approach. As one of the most critical steps, turn insulation has to be wrapped after the heat treatment of the conductor. Since the superconducting property of Nb3Sn is deeply sensitive to the strain, the strain must be strictly controlled during the wrapping process. In this article, the concept design of the wrapping system is introduced. Analysis of strain and construction of the wrapping mathematic model are performed and verified by the wrapping trial. Based on the abovementioned results, the detail design of the wrapping system has been completed and the machine is currently being manufactured.

Abstract

Nine toroidal field (TF) coils have been developed in Japan for the international thermonuclear experimental reactor (ITER). The joint resistance of TF coil should satisfy the requirement of smaller than 3 nano-ohm at 2 T of external magnetic field and 68 kA of transport current. Full-size joint sample (FSJS) tests were performed for joint development and for TF coil manufacture, as part of the process control. 11 FSJS tests are conducted in total. FSJS tests were conducted with assistance from a test faculty in the National Institute for Fusion Science as reported in a previous paper. All FSJS tests successfully satisfied the requirement of resistance less than 3 nΩ at 2 T. Additionally, the TF coil joints are subjected to cyclic electromagnetic force and warm-up/cool-down during the ITER operation. The authors investigated the joint performance for the abovementioned influence. The results showed no degradation in the joint resistance. Thus, the TF joint developed in Japan was qualified successfully.

Abstract

• Circuit design to double the toroidal magnetic field on the QUEST spherical tokamak is in progress. • Electron cyclotron (EC) resonances in QUEST changes with a high field. Fundamental resonance for 28 GHz EC waves emerges on the high field side. • The toroidal coil current to double the field is 100 kA. The current source consists of the 125 power supply modules in parallel. • A module comprises a bank of lithium-ion capacitors and a DC–DC buck converter. • In the bench test of a single module, the current increased linearly and maintained the flattop as programmed. Various scenarios of electron cyclotron heating can be explored in a spherical tokamak with a high toroidal field. On the QUEST spherical tokamak, doubling the toroidal field results in the emergence of the fundamental resonance layer for 28 GHz electron cyclotron waves. The second-harmonic resonance layer shifts toward the plasma central area. To increase the coil current from 50 to 100 kA, a current source is designed with 125 modules in parallel. The module power supply comprises a bank of lithium-ion capacitors and a DC–DC buck converter.
