Abstract

Red Blood Cells (RBCs) are the simplest cell types with complex dynamical and viscoelastic phenomenology. While the mechanical rigidity and the flickering noise of RBCs have been extensively investigated, an accurate determination of the constitutive equations of the relaxational kinetics is lacking. Here we measure the force relaxation of RBCs under different types of tensional and compressive extension-jump protocols by attaching an optically trapped bead to the RBC membrane. Relaxational kinetics follows linear response from 60pN (tensional) to -20pN (compressive) applied forces, exhibiting a triple-exponential function with three well-separated timescales over four decades (0.01-100s). While the fast timescale ($\tau_F\sim 0.02(1)s$) corresponds to the relaxation of the membrane, the intermediate and slow timescales ($\tau_I=4(1)s$; $\tau_S=70(8)s$) likely arise from the cortex dynamics and the cytosol viscosity. Relaxation is highly heterogeneous across the RBC population, yet the three relaxation times are correlated, showing dynamical scaling. Finally, we find that glucose depletion and laser illumination of RBCs lead to faster triple-exponential kinetics and RBC rigidification. Abstract

The entrainment (or locking) phenomenon, by which an oscillator adapts its natural rhythm to an external periodic signal, is well-known in physics, chemistry, biology, etc.; however, controlling an stochastic nonlinear system with a small-amplitude signal is a challenging task, and systems that allow for low-cost experiments are scarce. Here we use a semiconductor laser with optical feedback, operated in the regime where it randomly emits abrupt spikes. We quantify the quality of the entrainment of the optical spikes to periodic, small-amplitude electric perturbations of the laser pump current. We use the success rate (SR) that counts the number of spikes that occur within a short time window after each perturbation, and the false positive rate (FPR) that counts the additional spikes that occur outside the window. The ROC curves (SR vs. FPR plots) uncover parameter regions where the electric perturbations fully control the laser spikes, entraining them, such that the laser emits, shortly after each perturbation, one and only one spike (i.e., SR=1 and FPR=0). We also characterize the locking-unlocking transitions when the perturbation amplitude and frequency vary.

Abstract

Symbolic methods of analysis are valuable tools for investigating complex time-dependent signals. In particular, the ordinal method defines sequences of symbols according to the ordering in which values appear in a time series. This method has been shown to yield useful information, even when applied to signals with large noise contamination. Here we use ordinal analysis to investigate the transition between eyes closed (EC) and eyes open (EO) resting states. We analyze two {EEG} datasets (with 71 and 109 healthy subjects) with different recording conditions (sampling rates and the number of electrodes in the scalp). Using as diagnostic tools the permutation entropy, the entropy computed from symbolic transition probabilities, and an asymmetry coefficient (that measures the asymmetry of the likelihood of the transitions between symbols) we show that ordinal analysis applied to the raw data distinguishes the two brain states. In both datasets, we find that the EO state is characterized by higher entropies and lower asymmetry coefficient, as compared to the EC state. 4. State space reconstruction of spatially extended systems and of time delayed systems from the time series of a scalar variable

Abstract

The space-time representation of high-dimensional dynamical systems that have a well defined characteristic time scale has proven to be very useful to deepen the understanding of such systems and to uncover hidden features in their output signals. Genuine analogies between one-dimensional (1D) spatially extended systems (1D SESs) and time delayed systems (TDSs) have been observed, including similar pattern formation and propagation of localized structures. An open question is if such analogies are limited to the space-time representation, or, if it is possible to reconstruct similar attractors, from the time series of an observed variable. In this work we address this issue by considering a bistable 1D SES and two TDSs (a bistable system and a model of two lasers with time delayed coupling). In these three examples we find that we can reconstruct the underlying attractor in a three-dimensional pseudo-space, where the evolution is governed by a polynomial potential. We also discuss the limitations of the analogy between 1D SESs and TDSs.

Abstract

ObjectiveTo assess the separate and combined associations of maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and gestational weight gain with the risks of pregnancy complications and their population impact.DesignIndividual participant data meta-analysis of 39 cohorts.SettingEurope, North America, and Oceania.Population265 270 births.MethodsInformation on maternal pre-pregnancy BMI, gestational weight gain, and pregnancy complications was obtained. Multilevel binary logistic regression models were used.Main outcome measuresGestational hypertension, pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, preterm birth, small and large for gestational age at birth.ResultsHigher maternal pre-pregnancy BMI and gestational weight gain were, across their full ranges, associated with higher risks of gestational hypertensive disorders, gestational diabetes, and large for gestational age at birth. Preterm birth risk was higher at lower and higher BMI and weight gain. Compared with normal weight mothers with medium gestational weight gain, obese mothers with high gestational weight gain had the highest risk of any pregnancy complication (odds ratio 2.51, 95% CI 2.31- 2.74). We estimated that 23.9% of any pregnancy complication was attributable to maternal overweight/obesity and 31.6% of large for gestational age infants was attributable to excessive gestational weight gain.ConclusionsMaternal pre-pregnancy BMI and gestational weight gain are, across their full ranges, associated with risks of pregnancy complications. Obese mothers with high gestational weight gain are at the highest risk of pregnancy complications. Promoting a healthy pre-pregnancy BMI and gestational weight gain may reduce the burden of pregnancy complications and ultimately the risk of maternal and neonatal morbidity.Tweetable abstractPromoting a healthy body mass index and gestational weight gain might reduce the population burden of pregnancy complications.

7. Experimental characterization of the transition to coherence collapse in a semiconductor laser with optical feedback

Abstract

Semiconductor lasers with time-delayed optical feedback display a wide range of dynamical regimes, which have found various practical applications. They also provide excellent testbeds for data analysis tools for characterizing complex signals. Recently, several of us have analyzed experimental intensity time-traces and quantitatively identified the onset of different dynamical regimes, as the laser's current increases. Specifically, we identified the onset of low-frequency fluctuations (LFFs), where the laser intensity displays abrupt dropouts, and the onset of coherence collapse (CC), where the intensity fluctuations are highly irregular. Here we map these regimes when both, the laser current and the feedback strength vary. We show that the shape of the distribution of intensity fluctuations (characterized by the standard deviation, the skewness, and the kurtosis) allows to distinguish between noise, LFFs, and CC, and to quantitatively determine (in spite of the gradual nature of the transitions) the boundaries of the three regimes. Ordinal analysis of the inter-dropout time intervals consistently identifies the three regimes occurring in the same parameter regions as the analysis of the intensity distribution. Simulations of the well-known time-delayed Lang-Kobayashi model are in good qualitative agreement with the observations.

Abstract

We present the results of our power spectral density analysis for the BL Lac object OJ\,287, utilizing the {\it Fermi}-LAT survey at high-energy $\gamma$-rays, {\it Swift}-XRT in X-rays, several ground-based telescopes and the {\it Kepler} satellite in the optical, and radio telescopes at GHz frequencies. The light curves are modeled in terms of continuous-time auto-regressive moving average (CARMA) processes. Owing to the inclusion of the {\it Kepler} data, we were able to construct \emph{for the first time} the optical variability power spectrum of a blazar without any gaps across $\sim6$ dex in temporal frequencies. Our analysis reveals that the radio power spectra are of a colored-noise type on timescales ranging from tens of years down to months, with no evidence for breaks or other spectral features. The overall optical power spectrum is also consistent with a colored noise on the variability timescales ranging from 117 years down to hours, with no hints of any quasi-periodic oscillations. The X-ray power spectrum resembles the radio and optical power spectra on the analogous timescales ranging from tens of years down to months. Finally, the $\gamma$-ray power spectrum is noticeably different from the radio, optical, and X-ray power spectra of the source: we have detected a characteristic relaxation timescale in the {\it Fermi}-LAT data, corresponding to $\sim 150$\,days, such that on timescales longer than this, the power spectrum is consistent with uncorrelated (white) noise, while on shorter variability timescales there is correlated (colored) noise., Comment: ApJ accepted

Abstract

OJ287 is a quasi-periodic quasar with roughly 12 year optical cycles. It displays prominent outbursts which are predictable in a binary black hole model. The model predicted a major optical outburst in December 2015. We found that the outburst did occur within the expected time range, peaking on 2015 December 5 at magnitude 12.9 in the optical R-band. Based on Swift/XRT satellite measurements and optical polarization data, we find that it included a major thermal component. Its timing provides an accurate estimate for the spin of the primary black hole, chi = 0.313 +- 0.01. The present outburst also confirms the established general relativistic properties of the system such as the loss of orbital energy to gravitational radiation at the 2 % accuracy level and it opens up the possibility of testing the black hole no-hair theorem with a 10 % accuracy during the present decade.

Abstract

In sensory neurons the presence of noise can facilitate the detection of weak information-carrying signals, which are encoded and transmitted via correlated sequences of spikes. Here we investigate relative temporal order in spike sequences induced by a subthreshold periodic input, in the presence of white Gaussian noise. To simulate the spikes, we use the FitzHugh-Nagumo model, and to investigate the output sequence of inter-spike intervals (ISIs), we use the symbolic method of ordinal analysis. We find different types of relative temporal order, in the form of preferred ordinal patterns which depend on both, the strength of the noise and the period of the input signal. We also demonstrate a resonance-like behavior, as certain periods and noise levels enhance temporal ordering in the ISI sequence, maximizing the probability of the preferred patterns. Our findings could be relevant for understanding the mechanisms underlying temporal coding, by which single sensory neurons represent in spike sequences the information about weak periodic stimuli.

Abstract

We use advanced statistical tools of time-series analysis to characterize the dynamical complexity of the transition to optical wave turbulence in a fibre laser. Ordinal analysis and the horizontal visibility graph applied to the experimentally measured laser output intensity reveal the presence of temporal correlations during the transition from the laminar to the turbulent lasing regimes. Both methods unveil coherent structures with well defined time-scales and strong correlations both, in the timing of the laser pulses and in their peak intensities. We analyze the effects of noise on the permutation entropy of dynamical systems. We take as numerical examples the logistic map and the R\"ossler system. Upon varying the noise strengthfaster, we find a transition from an almost-deterministic regime, where the permutation entropy grows slower than linearly with the pattern dimension, to a noise-dominated regime, where the permutation entropy grows faster than linearly with the pattern dimension. We perform the same analysis on experimental time-series by considering the stochastic spiking output of a semiconductor laser with optical feedback. Because of the experimental conditions, the dynamics is found to be always in the noise-dominated regime. Nevertheless, the analysis allows to detect regularities of the underlying dynamics. By comparing the results of these three different examples, we discuss the possibility of determining from a time series whether the underlying dynamics is dominated by noise or not.

We examine the dynamics of semiconductor lasers coupled in a ring configuration. The lasers, which have stable output intensity when isolated, behave chaotically when coupled unidirectionally in a closed chain. In this way, we show that neither feedback nor bidirectional coupling is necessary to induce chaotic dynamics at the laser output. We study the synchronization phenomena arising in this particular coupling architecture, and discuss its possible application to chaos-based communications. Abstract

We show that simultaneous synchronization between two delay-coupled oscillators can be achieved by relaying the dynamics via a third mediating element, which surprisingly lags behind the synchronized outer elements. The zero-lag synchronization thus obtained is robust over a considerable parameter range. We substantiate our claims with experimental and numerical evidence of these synchronization solutions in a chain of three coupled semiconductor lasers with long inter-element coupling delays. The generality of the mechanism is validated in a neuronal model with the same coupling architecture. Abstract

The dynamics of power distribution between longitudinal modes of a multimode semiconductor laser subjected to external optical feedback is experimentally analyzed in the low-frequency fluctuation regime. Power dropouts in the total light intensity are invariably accompanied by sudden activations of several longitudinal modes. These activations are seen not to be simultaneous to the dropouts, but to occur after them. Abstract

Coherence resonance occurring in semiconductor lasers with optical feedback is studied via the Lang-Kobayashi model with external non-white noise in the pumping current. The temporal correlation and the amplitude of the noise have a highly relevant influence in the system, leading to an optimal coherent response for suitable values of both the noise amplitude and correlation time. Abstract

The search for new superhydrides, promising materials for both hydrogen storage and high temperature superconductivity, made great progress, thanks to atomistic simulations and Crystal Structure Prediction (CSP) algorithms. When they are combined with Density Functional Theory (DFT), these methods are highly reliable and often match a great part of the experimental results. However, systems of increasing complexity (number of atoms and chemical species) become rapidly challenging as the number of minima to explore grows exponentially with the number of degrees of freedom in the simulation cell. An efficient sampling strategy preserving a sustainable computational cost then remains to be found. We propose such a strategy based on an active-learning process where machine learning potentials and DFT simulations are jointly used, opening the way to the discovery of complex structures. As a proof of concept, this method is applied to the exploration of tin crystal structures under various pressures. We showed that the α phase, not included in the learning process, is correctly retrieved, despite its singular nature of bonding. Moreover, all the expected phases are correctly predicted under pressure (20 and 100 GPa), suggesting the high transferability of our approach. The method has then been applied to the search of yttrium superhydrides (YHx) crystal structures under pressure. The YH6 structure of space group Im-3m is successfully retrieved. However, the exploration of more complex systems leads to the appearance of a large number of structures. The selection of the relevant ones to be included in the active learning process is performed through the analysis of atomic environments and the clustering algorithm. Finally, a metric involving a distance based on x-ray spectra is introduced, which guides the structural search toward experimentally relevant structures. The global process (active-learning and new selection methods) is finally considered to explore more complex and unknown YHx phases, unreachable by former CSP algorithms. Abstract

We describe the following new features which significantly enhance the power of the recently developed real-space imaginary-time GW scheme (Rieger et al., Comp. Phys. Commun. 117, 211 (1999)) for the calculation of self-energies and related quantities of solids: (i) to fit the smoothly decaying time/energy tails of the dynamically screened Coulomb interaction and other quantities to model functions, treating only the remaining time/energy region close to zero numerically and performing the Fourier transformation from time to energy and vice versa by a combination of analytic integration of the tails and Gauss-Legendre quadrature of the remaining part and (ii) to accelerate the convergence of the band sum in the calculation of the Green's function by replacing higher unoccupied eigenstates by free electron states (plane waves). These improvements make the calculation of larger systems (surfaces, clusters, defects etc.) accessible., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

The dynamics of a semiconductor-laser array whose individual elements are coupled in a global way through an external mirror is numerically analysed. A coherent in-phase solution is seen to be preferred by the system at intermediate values of the feedback coupling strength. At low values of this parameter, a strong amplification of the spontaneous emission noise is observed. Abstract

Electronic structure calculations have been instrumental in providing many important insights into a range of physical and chemical properties of various molecular and solid-state systems. Their importance to various fields, including materials science, chemical sciences, computational chemistry and device physics, is underscored by the large fraction of available public supercomputing resources devoted to these calculations. As we enter the exascale era, exciting new opportunities to increase simulation numbers, sizes, and accuracies present themselves. In order to realize these promises, the community of electronic structure software developers will however first have to tackle a number of challenges pertaining to the efficient use of new architectures that will rely heavily on massive parallelism and hardware accelerators. This roadmap provides a broad overview of the state-of-the-art in electronic structure calculations and of the various new directions being pursued by the community. It covers 14 electronic structure codes, presenting their current status, their development priorities over the next five years, and their plans towards tackling the challenges and leveraging the opportunities presented by the advent of exascale computing.

Abstract

The molecule 2-decyl-7-phenyl-[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene (Ph-BTBT-10) is an organic semiconductor with outstanding performance in thin-film transistors. The asymmetric shape of the molecule causes an unusual phase behavior, which is a result of a distinct difference in the molecular arrangement between the head-to-head stacking of the molecules versus head-to-tail stacking. Thin films are prepared at elevated temperatures by crystallization from melt under controlled cooling rates, thermal-gradient crystallization, and bar coating at elevated temperatures. The films are investigated using X-ray diffraction techniques. Unusual peak-broadening effects are found, which cannot be explained using standard models. The modeling of the diffraction patterns with a statistic variation of the molecules reveal that a specific type of molecular disorder is responsible for the observed peak-broadening phenomena: the known head-to-head stacking within the crystalline phase is disturbed by the statistic integration of reversed (or flipped) molecules. It is found that 7-15% of the molecules are integrated in a reversed way, and these fractions are correlated with cooling rates during the sample preparation procedure. Temperature-dependent in situ experiments reveal that the defects can be healed by approaching the transition from the crystalline state to the smectic E state at a temperature of 145 °C. This work identifies and quantifies a specific crystalline defect type within thin films of an asymmetric rodlike conjugated molecule, which is caused by the crystallization kinetics.

BACKGROUND: Early-life vitamin D deficiency may impair immune system development contributing to allergy and asthma onset. Findings from prospective studies are inconsistent. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether maternal and child vitamin D levels are associated with allergic and asthma-related symptoms throughout childhood in a Spanish birth cohort. METHODS: 25-Hydroxyvitamin D(3) (25(OH)D(3)) levels were measured in the serum of pregnant women (N = 2525) and children (N = 803). Information on allergic and asthma-related symptoms was obtained from repeated questionnaires from 1 to 9 years.
