International audience; Wetlands are the largest natural source of methane (CH4) to the atmosphere. The eddy covariance method provides robust measurements of net ecosystem exchange of CH4, but interpreting its spatiotemporal variations is challenging due to the co-occurrence of CH4 production, oxidation, and transport dynamics. Here, we estimate these three processes using a data-model fusion approach across 25 wetlands in temperate, boreal, and Arctic regions. Our data-constrained model—iPEACE—reasonably reproduced CH4 emissions at 19 of the 25 sites with normalized root mean square error of 0.59, correlation coefficient of 0.82, and normalized standard deviation of 0.87. Among the three processes, CH4 production appeared to be the most important process, followed by oxidation in explaining inter-site variations in CH4 emissions. Based on a sensitivity analysis, CH4 emissions were generally more sensitive to decreased water table than to increased gross primary productivity or soil temperature. For periods with leaf area index (LAI) of ≥20% of its annual peak, plant-mediated transport appeared to be the major pathway for CH4 transport. Long-term atmospheric CO2 concentration records have suggested a reduction in the positive effect of warming on high-latitude carbon uptake since the 1990s. A variety of mechanisms have been proposed to explain the reduced net carbon sink of northern ecosystems with increased air temperature, including water stress on vegetation and increased respiration over recent decades. However, the lack of consistent long-term carbon flux and in situ soil moisture data has severely limited our ability to identify the mechanisms responsible for the recent reduced carbon sink strength. In this study, we used a record of nearly 100 site-years of eddy covariance data from 11 continuous permafrost tundra sites distributed across the circumpolar Arctic to test the temperature (expressed as growing degree days, GDD) responses of gross primary production (GPP), net ecosystem exchange (NEE), and ecosystem respiration (ER) at different periods of the summer (early, peak, and late summer) including dominant tundra vegetation classes (graminoids and mosses, and shrubs). We further tested GPP, NEE, and ER relationships with soil moisture and vapor pressure deficit to identify potential moisture limitations on plant productivity and net carbon exchange. Our results show a decrease in GPP with rising GDD during the peak summer (July) for both vegetation classes, and a significant relationship between the peak summer GPP and soil moisture after statistically controlling for GDD in a partial correlation analysis. These results suggest that tundra ecosystems might not benefit from increased temperature as much as suggested by several terrestrial biosphere models, if decreased soil moisture limits the peak summer plant productivity, reducing the ability of these ecosystems to sequester carbon during the summer.

Methane (CH4) is a strong greenhouse gas that accelerates climate change, yet its emissions from wetlands in general and Arctic permafrost-affected wetlands in particular remain very uncertain in the global CH4 budget. Arctic CH4 sources and the expected effect of permafrost thaw on these sources have gained much attention by the public, media, policy makers, and researchers during the past decade, but neither inversion nor process-based models provide clear trends in emissions and there has not been any observational evidence for increasing CH4 emissions from Arctic permafrost ecosystems.Here, we provide this observational evidence. Based on the longest record of direct Arctic CH4 flux observations acquired since 2002 at a Siberian tundra site using the eddy covariance method, we found an increase in the early summer (June and July) CH4 emissions by 1.9 ± 0.7 % yr-1 since 2004 along with a strong increase in June air temperatures of 0.3 ± 0.1 °C yr-1. Although the tundra’s maximum source strength in August has not yet changed and the overall mean annual emissions of 171.5 ± 12.3 mmol m−2 yr−1 remain in the lower half of the published range, the increase in early summer methane emissions shows that atmospheric warming has begun to affect the methane flux dynamics of permafrost-affected ecosystems in the Arctic. This is especially noteworthy, given the very thick and cold continuous permafrost in the study area compared to most other observational sites.While the observed changes clearly happen in the early warm season, we also estimate 39 % of the annual emission to originate from the re-freezing and frozen period, highlighting the importance of the cold season for annual permafrost CH4 emission estimates and the substantial challenges in achieving continuous data coverage in the Arctic winter.

Spatio-temporal patterns of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) release from natural sources needs to be better understood across the Arctic region. Climate change in the Arctic is occurring at a pace that may be 2 to 4 times the global average, and existing measurements derive from a limited number of field sites, and most originate during the growing season although important studies show that release continues during winter. The Mackenzie River Delta in the western Canadian Arctic holds thin and destabilizing permafrost, high organic content soils, a high proportion of wetlands, and vast natural gas occurrences at depth, all of which create high methane potential. In the present study, we conducted atmospheric CH4 and CO2 measurements using a mobile laboratory equipped with a greenhouse gas analyzer during the summer and winter. We also visited known aquatic and terrestrial CH4 flux hotspots, including pingos, lakes, river channels and wetlands, where we measured concentration transects and stable carbon isotope (13C-CH4) values to characterize CH4source and spatial pattern. Source stable carbon isotope (δ13C-CH4) signatures at hotspots ranged from -42 to -88 ‰ δ13C-CH4. Active surface microbial production was responsible for at least 4 of the 8 hotspots investigated, indicating that microbial production may be responsible for a greater number of CH4 hotspots than is indicated by previous studies in the region. Mobile surveys showed that shrubland, grassland and deep water were the most important ecosystems for CH4 and CO2 production during the wintertime and that low lying areas of the Delta had the highest atmospheric mixing ratios of CH4.

Rewetting drained peatlands is recognized as a leading and effective natural climate solution to curbing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, CO2 source-to-sink transition is not necessarily detected in years immediately following rewetting and temporal dynamics in carbon budgets can be seen in rewetted systems. Here, we investigate long-term (2008 & 2013 - present) ecosystem flux measurements using the eddy covariance technique, revealing the temporal patterns of annual carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) fluxes, in a rewetted peatland site in northeastern Germany. We show that site-level annual emissions presented in this study are only approaching the IPCC default Tier 1 emission factors (EFs) and those suggested for the German national inventory report after 13-16 years of rewetting when the optimum range of water level (close to the soil surface) is reached during the vegetation period. Overall, our results indicate that in addition to annual variation in soil temperature, vegetation development (post-rewetting successional vegetation dynamics) along with water table depth have the greatest effect on the carbon sink function. We further observe a transitional change into a new phase in the ecosystem carbon status throughout the study period that includes a source-to-sink transition of annual CO2 fluxes in 2020. The decreasing trend for CO2 fluxes is estimated at -0.37 t CO2-C ha-1 yr-1 and -44 kg CH4 ha-1 yr-1 for CH4 emissions for the period until 2021. While we found a strong reduction in CH4 emissions in 2019 (following a severe drought), the negative trend in CH4 emissions in the years before the drought event is still statistically significant (-17 kg CH4 ha-1 yr-1). Accordingly, a considerable reduction of the 100-year annual global warming potential (GWP) and sustained-flux global warming potential (SGWP) was observed during the course of the study and potentially approaching a new steady-state phase within the last few years. In Germany, the published long-term datasets from rewetted peatlands only cover a period of ≤10 years after rewetting, thus, the duration of potential phases and development of future emissions are still unclear. This outlines the need for more long-term datasets to cover the source-to-sink transition in rewetted peatlands that also capture the impacts of likely future climate extremes. Here, we aim to establish a baseline to contribute a better understanding of the transitioning, complexity, and climate sensitivity of rewetted systems by analyzing the dynamics within the site and the inter-annual variability via their respective drivers. The introduction, monitoring, and targeted management of an ensemble of site characteristics (coverage/type of dominant vegetation, average water level along with microclimate and microtopographic conditions) is necessary in understanding the transient nature of such systems and further refine the existing static default EFs.

Being the most accurate, direct, and defensible method available to date for studying the ecosystem scale gas exchange, the eddy covariance (EC) method was used to examine the net carbon exchange over an alpine steppe ecosystem near the Nam Co Station for Multi-sphere Observation and Research (NAMORS) on the Tibetan Plateau. EC measurements are site-specific and the values represent the total sum of the relative contribution of fluxes from all the components within the footprint over the measurement time. The scattered and uneven distribution of EC towers and their small footprint demand upscaling of the flux observations to a regional scale for improving understanding of the net exchange of CO2 between the terrestrial biosphere and the atmosphere. Regional scale carbon estimates are highly variable and not fully explored as compared to carbon balance studies at extreme ends of the spatial scale spectrum (large continental scale and small vegetation stand scale). Translating the spatially sparse measurements into consistent, gridded flux estimates at the regional scale is a prerequisite for quantifying the current terrestrial carbon cycle. But the uncertainties caused by the representativeness error in the model grids while quantifying the regional estimates of carbon exchange are not fully investigated due to limited data availability as well as knowledge of flux variability at the grid scale. Rather than extrapolating the point scale and/or site-specific scale measurements by fitting any statistical model to predict ecosystem or earth system processes, a systematic upscaling approach is vital for refining mathematical models and accounting for the grid-scale uncertainties for better policy decisions. As an initial step to this, the net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of carbon estimated at two different measurement heights of 3 m and 19 m, in the early growing period of 2019 were used to quantify and analyze the interdependencies in the flux measurements at two heights and the influence of heterogeneity within the footprint in the measured fluxes.Keywords: Eddy covariance, Carbon flux, Net ecosystem exchange, Tibetan Plateau

The cropland carbon (C) balance at regional scale still contains high uncertainties not the least due to the problem of up-scaling C fluxes of temporarily and spatially highly divers ecosystems. The C-exchange between the terrestrial ecosystem and the atmosphere constitute the largest and most uncertain flux of the cropland C balance, as opposed to C import from organic (manure) and C export through harvest which are lower and less uncertain.Combining satellite data with local eddy covariance CO2-flux data is commonly used to up-scale the C-exchange signal from point to regional scale across global ecosystems. Low spatial resolution products like MODIS limit their applicability and accuracy to larger homogeneous areas involving a high degree of uncertainty rather than detecting and tracing highly dynamic (farm-)field scale CO2-fluxes from space. We are using eddy-covariance CO2-flux data of an arable field in conjunction with Sentinel-2 derived vegetation indices (VI) to assess the ability of the satellite data to monitor daily net-ecosystem exchange (NEE), gross-primary productivity (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (Reco) based on a matched footprint. Simple linear regression models are built to test the ability of a range of VIs (NDVI, GNDVI, EVI, EVI2, SAVI, MNDWI, NDWI, SR, S2REP) to monitor and predict CO2-exchange for croplands. We analyze the correlation between measured CO2-fluxes and VIs over the course of the growing seasons to assess the suitability and accuracy of the VIs along the phenological year. We present a single site analysis to zoom into short-comings of this approach and how the satellite signal relates to vegetation CO2-exchange. VIs generally show a high variability in their predictive power. Still, results suggest a similarly high accuracy as mechanistic modelling approaches for suitable VIs, e.g. the cumulative C-exchange (NEE) of winter wheat of one growing season based on NDVI and GNDVI is over- and under-estimated by only 33 (15%) and 41 (18%) g C m-2 respectively.

Past efforts to synthesize and quantify the magnitude and change in carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes in terrestrial ecosystems across the rapidly warming Arctic–boreal zone (ABZ) have provided valuable information but were limited in their geographical and temporal coverage. Furthermore, these efforts have been based on data aggregated over varying time periods, often with only minimal site ancillary data, thus limiting their potential to be used in large-scale carbon budget assessments. To bridge these gaps, we developed a standardized monthly database of Arctic–boreal CO2 fluxes (ABCflux) that aggregates in situ measurements of terrestrial net ecosystem CO2 exchange and its derived partitioned component fluxes: gross primary productivity and ecosystem respiration. The data span from 1989 to 2020 with over 70 supporting variables that describe key site conditions (e.g., vegetation and disturbance type), micrometeorological and environmental measurements (e.g., air and soil temperatures), and flux measurement techniques. Here, we describe these variables, the spatial and temporal distribution of observations, the main strengths and limitations of the database, and the potential research opportunities it enables. In total, ABCflux includes 244 sites and 6309 monthly observations; 136 sites and 2217 monthly observations represent tundra, and 108 sites and 4092 observations represent the boreal biome. The database includes fluxes estimated with chamber (19 % of the monthly observations), snow diffusion (3 %) and eddy covariance (78 %) techniques. The largest number of observations were collected during the climatological summer (June–August; 32 %), and fewer observations were available for autumn (September–October; 25 %), winter (December–February; 18 %), and spring (March–May; 25 %). ABCflux can be used in a wide array of empirical, remote sensing and modeling studies to improve understanding of the regional and temporal variability in CO2 fluxes and to better estimate the terrestrial ABZ CO2 budget. The drag coefficient, Stanton number and Dalton number are of particular importance for estimating the surface turbulent fluxes of momentum, heat and water vapor using bulk parameterization. Although these bulk transfer coefficients have been extensively studied over the past several decades in marine and large-lake environments, there are no studies analyzing their variability for smaller lakes. Here, we evaluated these coefficients through directly measured surface fluxes using the eddy-covariance technique over more than 30 lakes and reservoirs of different sizes and depths. Our analysis showed that the transfer coefficients (adjusted to neutral atmospheric stability) were generally within the range reported in previous studies for large lakes and oceans. Rewetting previously drained peatlands restores the critical function of peatlands as long-term carbon storages and sinks currently threatened by climate change and additional human-induced disturbances. Understanding and projecting the restoration process by rewetting, however, currently face a pressing challenge, the lack of consistent and gap-free records of important carbon cycling indicators of peatlands such as the gross primary production (GPP) over long term. In this study, we reconstructed the GPP in a rewetted peatland called Zarnekow (Fluxnet-ID: DE-Zrk) in Germany from 2000 to 2020 by combining long-term satellite observations and limited-term tower-based eddy covariance (EC) measurements based on Random Forest regression models. The R2 between the reconstructed data and EC data was 0.6. The reasonable reconstruction of long-term GPP enabled trend analysis that identified two distinct periods of decreasing/increasing in GPP due to rewetting and droughts. Rewetting in the winter of 2004 and 2005 stabilized GPP after a decreasing period. A drought in 2018 significantly increased GPP, and GPP remained high over the following two years. Furthermore, the month-specific trends show significant seasonality at this site, specifically, an increasing trend over the 21 years in the growing-season months of June to August and a decreasing trend in the other months. The most important variables for satellite-based estimates of GPP at this site include total evapotranspiration, land surface temperature, enhanced vegetation index and near-infrared reflectance vegetation index. Long-term analyses of carbon fluxes through the combination of satellite observations and EC measurements provide crucial insights into the restoration of carbon sequestration functions in rewetted peatlands.

Arctic-boreal landscapes are experiencing profound warming, along with changes in ecosystem moisture status and disturbance from fire. This region is of global importance in terms of carbon feedbacks to climate, yet the sign (sink or source) and magnitude of the Arctic-boreal carbon budget within recent years remains highly uncertain. Here, we provide new estimates of recent (2003–2015) vegetation gross primary productivity (GPP), ecosystem respiration (Reco), net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE; Reco − GPP), and terrestrial methane (CH4) emissions for the Arctic-boreal zone using a satellite data-driven process-model for northern ecosystems (TCFM-Arctic), calibrated and evaluated using measurements from >60 tower eddy covariance (EC) sites. We used TCFM-Arctic to obtain daily 1-km2 flux estimates and annual carbon budgets for the pan-Arctic-boreal region. Across the domain, the model indicated an overall average NEE sink of −850 Tg CO2-C year−1. Eurasian boreal zones, especially those in Siberia, contributed to a majority of the net sink. In contrast, the tundra biome was relatively carbon neutral (ranging from small sink to source). Regional CH4 emissions from tundra and boreal wetlands (not accounting for aquatic CH4) were estimated at 35 Tg CH4-C year−1. Accounting for additional emissions from open water aquatic bodies and from fire, using available estimates from the literature, reduced the total regional NEE sink by 21% and shifted many far northern tundra landscapes, and some boreal forests, to a net carbon source. This assessment, based on in situ observations and models, improves our understanding of the high-latitude carbon status and also indicates a continued need for integrated site-to-regional assessments to monitor the vulnerability of these ecosystems to climate change.

Peatlands are among the largest stocks of soil carbon, which can be stored for thousands of years under well-wetted conditions. The main goals of the study were to assess annual and seasonal CO2 balances of a temperate peatland and the main biophysical factors affecting these CO2 fluxes. The studied peatland was usually a CO2 sink with a mean annual net ecosystem production (NEP) of 110±83 gCO2-C·m^−2·yr^−1 and extreme balances in 2006 (-17 gCO2-C·m^−2·yr^−1) and 2011 (194 gCO2-C·m^−2·yr^−1). Annual fluxes were not significantly correlated with biophysical variables, unlike seasonal data. Furthermore, the average air temperature in spring and summer was related to NEP at r^2=0.65 and r^2=0.61, respectively (warmer spring increased NEP while hot summer decreased NEP in these seasons). A decrease in daytime measured NEP during the summer period (June-August) was observed when TA exceeded 25 °C or VPD was above 15 hPa, respectively, due to the growing Reco and possibly plant photorespiration. These findings suggest a negative impact of ongoing global warming on temperate peatland CO2 balances.

Methane (CH4) emissions from natural landscapes constitute roughly half of global CH4 contributions to the atmosphere, yet large uncertainties remain in the absolute magnitude and the seasonality of emission quantities and drivers. Eddy covariance (EC) measurements of CH4 flux are ideal for constraining ecosystem-scale CH4 emissions due to quasi-continuous and high-temporal-resolution CH4 flux measurements, coincident carbon dioxide, water, and energy flux measurements, lack of ecosystem disturbance, and increased availability of datasets over the last decade. Here, we (1) describe the newly published dataset, FLUXNET-CH4 Version 1.0, the first open-source global dataset of CH4 EC measurements (available at https://fluxnet.org/data/fluxnet-ch4-community-product/, last access: 7 April 2021). FLUXNET-CH4 includes half-hourly and daily gap-filled and non-gap-filled aggregated CH4 fluxes and meteorological data from 79 sites globally: 42 freshwater wetlands, 6 brackish and saline wetlands, 7 formerly drained ecosystems, 7 rice paddy sites, 2 lakes, and 15 uplands. Then, we (2) evaluate FLUXNET-CH4 representativeness for freshwater wetland coverage globally because the majority of sites in FLUXNET-CH4 Version 1.0 are freshwater wetlands which are a substantial source of total atmospheric CH4 emissions; and (3) we provide the first global estimates of the seasonal variability and seasonality predictors of freshwater wetland CH4 fluxes. Our representativeness analysis suggests that the freshwater wetland sites in the dataset cover global wetland bioclimatic attributes (encompassing energy, moisture, and vegetation-related parameters) in arctic, boreal, and temperate regions but only sparsely cover humid tropical regions. Seasonality metrics of wetland CH4 emissions vary considerably across latitudinal bands. In freshwater wetlands (except those between 20∘ S to 20∘ N) the spring onset of elevated CH4 emissions starts 3 d earlier, and the CH4 emission season lasts 4 d longer, for each degree Celsius increase in mean annual air temperature. On average, the spring onset of increasing CH4 emissions lags behind soil warming by 1 month, with very few sites experiencing increased CH4 emissions prior to the onset of soil warming. In contrast, roughly half of these sites experience the spring onset of rising CH4 emissions prior to the spring increase in gross primary productivity (GPP). The timing of peak summer CH4 emissions does not correlate with the timing for either peak summer temperature or peak GPP. Our results provide seasonality parameters for CH4 modeling and highlight seasonality metrics that cannot be predicted by temperature or GPP (i.e., seasonality of CH4 peak). FLUXNET-CH4 is a powerful new resource for diagnosing and understanding the role of terrestrial ecosystems and climate drivers in the global CH4 cycle, and future additions of sites in tropical ecosystems and site years of data collection will provide added value to this database. The Mackenzie River Delta is the second largest Arctic river delta in the world. Thin and destabilizing permafrost coupled with vast natural gas reserves at depth, high organic content soils, and a high proportion of wetlands create a unique ecosystem conducive to high rates of methane production from biogenic and thermogenic sources. Hotspots are known to have a significant contribution to summertime CH4 emissions in the region, but little research has been done to determine how often geologic or biogenic methane contributes to CH4 hotspots in the Mackenzie River Delta. In the present study, stable carbon isotope analysis was used to identify the source of CH4 at several aquatic and terrestrial sites thought to be hotspots of CH4 flux to the atmosphere. Source stable carbon isotope (δ13C-CH4) signatures were derived from keeling plots of point samples and ranged from -42 to -88 ‰ δ13C-CH4, identifying both biogenic and thermogenic and mixed biogenic/thermogenic sources. A CH4 source was determined for eight hotspots, two were thermogenic in origin, four were biogenic in origin, and two were from mixed biogenic/thermogenic sources, as evidenced by δ13C-CH4 signatures. This indicates that the largest hotspots of CH4 production in the Mackenzie River Delta are caused by a variety of sources. In addition to biogenic production at the surface we have identified CH4 migration to the surface from the Taglu gas field over an area of approximately 20 km from north to south and two different sites of mixed biogenic/thermogenic CH4 that were approximately 30 km apart.

Permafrost-affected soils contain large quantities of soil organic carbon (SOC). Changes in the SOC pool of a particular ecosystem can be related to its net ecosystem carbon balance (NECB) in which the balance of carbon (C) influxes and effluxes is expressed. For polygonal tundra landscapes, accounts of ecosystem carbon balances in the literature are often solely based on estimates of vertical carbon fluxes. To fill this gap, we present data regarding the lateral export rates of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from a polygonal tundra site in the north Siberian Lena River delta, Russia. We use water discharge observations in combination with concentration measurements of waterborne carbon to derive the lateral carbon fluxes from one growing season (2 June–8 September 2014 for DOC, 8 June–8 September 2014 for DIC). To put the lateral C fluxes into context, we furthermore present the surface–atmosphere eddy covariance fluxes of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) from this study site. The results show cumulative lateral DIC and DOC fluxes of 0.31–0.38 and 0.06–0.08 g m−2, respectively, during the 93 d observation period (8 June–8 September 2014). Vertical turbulent fluxes of CO2-C and CH4-C accumulated to −19.0 ± 1.2 and 1.0 ± 0.02 g m−2 in the same period. Thus, the lateral C export represented about 2 % of the net ecosystem exchange of (NEE) CO2. However, the relationship between lateral and surface–atmosphere fluxes changed over the observation period. At the beginning of the growing season (early June), the lateral C flux outpaced the surface-directed net vertical turbulent CO2 flux, causing the polygonal tundra landscape to be a net carbon source during this time of the year. Later in the growing season, the vertical turbulent CO2 flux dominated the NECB.

The Arctic–boreal zone (ABZ) is experiencing amplified warming, actively changing biogeochemical cycling of vegetation and soils. The land-to-atmosphere fluxes of CO2 in the ABZ have the potential to increase in magnitude and feedback to the climate causing additional large-scale warming. The ability to model and predict this vulnerability is critical to preparation for a warming world, but Earth system models have biases that may hinder understanding of the rapidly changing ABZ carbon fluxes. Here we investigate circumpolar carbon cycling represented by the Community Land Model 5 (CLM5.0) with a focus on seasonal gross primary productivity (GPP) in plant functional types (PFTs). We benchmark model results using data from satellite remote sensing products and eddy covariance towers. We find consistent biases in CLM5.0 relative to observational constraints: (1) the onset of deciduous plant productivity to be late; (2) the offset of productivity to lag and remain abnormally high for all PFTs in fall; (3) a high bias of grass, shrub, and needleleaf evergreen tree productivity; and (4) an underestimation of productivity of deciduous trees. Based on these biases, we focus on model development of alternate phenology, photosynthesis schemes, and carbon allocation parameters at eddy covariance tower sites. Although our improvements are focused on productivity, our final model recommendation results in other component CO2 fluxes, e.g., net ecosystem exchange (NEE) and terrestrial ecosystem respiration (TER), that are more consistent with observations. Results suggest that algorithms developed for lower latitudes and more temperate environments can be inaccurate when extrapolated to the ABZ, and that many land surface models may not accurately represent carbon cycling and its recent rapid changes in high-latitude ecosystems, especially when analyzed by individual PFTs.

While wetlands are the largest natural source of methane (CH4 ) to the atmosphere, they represent a large source of uncertainty in the global CH4 budget due to the complex biogeochemical controls on CH4 dynamics. Here we present, to our knowledge, the first multi-site synthesis of how predictors of CH4 fluxes (FCH4) in freshwater wetlands vary across wetland types at diel, multiday (synoptic), and seasonal time scales. We used several statistical approaches (correlation analysis, generalized additive modeling, mutual information, and random forests) in a wavelet-based multi-resolution framework to assess the importance of environmental predictors, nonlinearities and lags on FCH4 across 23 eddy covariance sites. Seasonally, soil and air temperature were dominant predictors of FCH4 at sites with smaller seasonal variation in water table depth (WTD). In contrast, WTD was the dominant predictor for wetlands with smaller variations in temperature (e.g., seasonal tropical/subtropical wetlands). Changes in seasonal FCH4 lagged fluctuations in WTD by ~17±11days, and lagged air and soil temperature by median values of 8±16 and 5±15days, respectively. Temperature and WTD were also dominant predictors at the multiday scale. Atmospheric pressure (PA) was another important multiday scale predictor for peat-dominated sites, with drops in PA coinciding with synchronous releases of CH4 . At the diel scale, synchronous relationships with latent heat flux and vapor pressure deficit suggest that physical processes controlling evaporation and boundary layer mixing exert similar controls on CH4 volatilization, and suggest the influence of pressurized ventilation in aerenchymatous vegetation. In addition, 1- to 4-h lagged relationships with ecosystem photosynthesis indicate recent carbon substrates, such as root exudates, may also control FCH4. By addressing issues of scale, asynchrony, and nonlinearity, this work improves understanding of the predictors and timing of wetland FCH4 that can inform future studies and models, and help constrain wetland CH4 emissions.

Short summary We summarize results during the last 5 years in the northern Eurasian region, especially from Russia, and introduce recent observations of the air quality in the urban environments in China. Although the scientific knowledge in these regions has increased, there are still gaps in our understanding of large-scale climate–Earth surface interactions and feedbacks. This arises from limitations in research infrastructures and integrative data analyses, hindering a comprehensive system analysis. The Pan-Eurasian Experiment (PEEX) Science Plan, released in 2015, addressed a need for a holistic system understanding and outlined the most urgent research needs for the rapidly changing Arctic-boreal region. Air quality in China, together with the long-range transport of atmospheric pollutants, was also indicated as one of the most crucial topics of the research agenda. These two geographical regions, the northern Eurasian Arctic-boreal region and China, especially the megacities in China, were identified as a “PEEX region”. It is also important to recognize that the PEEX geographical region is an area where science-based policy actions would have significant impacts on the global climate. This paper summarizes results obtained during the last 5 years in the northern Eurasian region, together with recent observations of the air quality in the urban environments in China, in the context of the PEEX programme. The main regions of interest are the Russian Arctic, northern Eurasian boreal forests (Siberia) and peatlands, and the megacities in China. We frame our analysis against research themes introduced in the PEEX Science Plan in 2015. We summarize recent progress towards an enhanced holistic understanding of the land–atmosphere–ocean systems feedbacks. We conclude that although the scientific knowledge in these regions has increased, the new results are in many cases insufficient, and there are still gaps in our understanding of large-scale climate–Earth surface interactions and feedbacks. This arises from limitations in research infrastructures, especially the lack of coordinated, continuous and comprehensive in situ observations of the study region as well as integrative data analyses, hindering a comprehensive system analysis. The fast-changing environment and ecosystem changes driven by climate change, socio-economic activities like the China Silk Road Initiative, and the global trends like urbanization further complicate such analyses. We recognize new topics with an increasing importance in the near future, especially “the enhancing biological sequestration capacity of greenhouse gases into forests and soils to mitigate climate change” and the “socio-economic development to tackle air quality issues”.

The Tibetan alpine steppe ecosystem covers an area of roughly 800 000 km 2 and contains up to 3.3 % soil organic carbon in the uppermost 30 cm, summing up to 1.93 Pg C for the Tibet Autonomous Region only (472 037 km 2 ). With temperatures rising 2 to 3 times faster than the global average, these carbon stocks are at risk of loss due to enhanced soil respiration. The remote location and the harsh environmental conditions on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) make it challenging to derive accurate data on the ecosystem–atmosphere exchange of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and water vapor ( H2O ). Here, we provide the first multiyear data set of CO 2 and H2O fluxes from the central Tibetan alpine steppe ecosystem, measured in situ using the eddy covariance technique. The calculated fluxes were rigorously quality checked and carefully corrected for a drift in concentration measurements. The gas analyzer self-heating effect during cold conditions was evaluated using the standard correction procedure and newly revised formulations ( Burba et al. , 2008 ; Frank and Massman , 2020 ) . A wind field analysis was conducted to identify influences of adjacent buildings on the turbulence regime and to exclude the disturbed fluxes from subsequent computations. The presented CO 2 fluxes were additionally gap filled using a standardized approach. The very low net carbon uptake across the 15-year data set highlights the special vulnerability of the Tibetan alpine steppe ecosystem to become a source of CO 2 due to global warming. Wetland CH4 emissions are among the most uncertain components of the global CH4 budget. The complex nature of wetland CH4 processes makes it challenging to identify causal relationships for improving our understanding and predictability of CH4 emissions. In this study, we used the flux measurements of CH4 from eddy covariance towers (30 sites from 4 wetlands types: bog, fen, marsh, and wet tundra) to construct a causality-constrained machine learning (ML) framework to explain the regulative factors and to capture CH4 emissions at sub-seasonal scale. We found that soil temperature is the dominant factor for CH4 emissions in all studied wetland types. Ecosystem respiration (CO2) and gross primary productivity exert controls at bog, fen, and marsh sites with lagged responses of days to weeks. Integrating these asynchronous environmental and biological causal relationships in predictive models significantly improved model performance. More importantly, modeled CH4 emissions differed by up to a factor of 4 under a +1°C warming scenario when causality constraints were considered. These results highlight the significant role of causality in modeling wetland CH4 emissions especially under future warming conditions, while traditional data-driven ML models may reproduce observations for the wrong reasons. Our proposed causality-guided model could benefit predictive modeling, large-scale upscaling, data gap-filling, and surrogate modeling of wetland CH4 emissions within earth system land models.

Arctic warming is affecting snow cover and soil hydrology, with consequences for carbon sequestration in tundra ecosystems. The scarcity of observations in the Arctic has limited our understanding of the impact of covarying environmental drivers on the carbon balance of tundra ecosystems. In this study, we address some of these uncertainties through a novel record of 119 site-years of summer data from eddy covariance towers representing dominant tundra vegetation types located on continuous permafrost in the Arctic. Here we found that earlier snowmelt was associated with more tundra net CO2 sequestration and higher gross primary productivity (GPP) only in June and July, but with lower net carbon sequestration and lower GPP in August. Although higher evapotranspiration (ET) can result in soil drying with the progression of the summer, we did not find significantly lower soil moisture with earlier snowmelt, nor evidence that water stress affected GPP in the late growing season. Our results suggest that the expected increased CO2 sequestration arising from Arctic warming and the associated increase in growing season length may not materialize if tundra ecosystems are not able to continue sequestering CO2 later in the season.

International audience; With the Arctic rapidly changing, the needs to observe, understand, and model the changes are essential. To support these needs, an annual cycle of observations of atmospheric properties, processes, and interactions were made while drifting with the sea ice across the central Arctic during the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition from October 2019 to September 2020. An international team designed and implemented the comprehensive program to document and characterize all aspects of the Arctic atmospheric system in unprecedented detail, using a variety of approaches, and across multiple scales. These measurements were coordinated with other observational teams to explore cross-cutting and coupled interactions with the Arctic Ocean, sea ice, and ecosystem through a variety of physical and biogeochemical processes. This overview outlines the breadth and complexity of the atmospheric research program, which was organized into 4 subgroups: atmospheric state, clouds and precipitation, gases and aerosols, and energy budgets. Atmospheric variability over the annual cycle revealed important influences from a persistent large-scale winter circulation pattern, leading to some storms with pressure and winds that were outside the interquartile range of past conditions suggested by long-term reanalysis. Similarly, the MOSAiC location was warmer and wetter in summer than the reanalysis climatology, in part due to its close proximity to the sea ice edge. The comprehensiveness of the observational program for characterizing and analyzing atmospheric phenomena is demonstrated via a winter case study examining air mass transitions and a summer case study examining vertical atmospheric evolution. Overall, the MOSAiC atmospheric program successfully met its objectives and was the most comprehensive atmospheric measurement program to date conducted over the Arctic sea ice. The obtained data will support a broad range of coupled-system scientific research and provide an important foundation for advancing multiscale modeling capabilities in the Arctic.

Modular Observation Solutions of Earth Systems (MOSES) is a novel observation system that is specifically designed to unravel the impact of distinct, dynamic events on the long-term development of environmental systems. Hydrometeorological extremes such as the recent European droughts or the floods of 2013 caused severe and lasting environmental damage. Modeling studies suggest that abrupt permafrost thaw events accelerate Arctic greenhouse gas emissions. Short-lived ocean eddies seem to comprise a significant share of the marine carbon uptake or release. Although there is increasing evidence that such dynamic events bear the potential for major environmental impacts, our knowledge on the processes they trigger is still very limited. MOSES aims at capturing such events, from their formation to their end, with high spatial and temporal resolution. As such, the observation system extends and complements existing national and international observation networks, which are mostly designed for long-term monitoring. Several German Helmholtz Association centers have developed this research facility as a mobile and modular “system of systems” to record energy, water, greenhouse gas, and nutrient cycles on the land surface, in coastal regions, in the ocean, in polar regions, and in the atmosphere—but especially the interactions between the Earth compartments. During the implementation period (2017–21), the measuring systems were put into operation and test campaigns were performed to establish event-driven campaign routines. Rapid warming of the Arctic is accelerating thaw of permafrost, which mobilizes organic carbon (OC). Remineralization of this carbon can contribute to further climate warming. The Peel River watershed is underlain by continuous and discontinuous permafrost and covers a diverse set of landscapes from wetlands to barren mountainous areas. Part of the watershed undergoes abrupt permafrost thaw that releases particulate OC (POC) to the fluvial system. In this study, we couple landscape characteristics to river POC to better understand its spatial variability and the changes imposed on the watershed by permafrost thaw. We sampled POC in July-August 2019 in the Peel River main stem and its tributaries (total n=~120) and used carbon isotopes and lipid biomarkers to characterize its composition and trace its sources.
