Fisheries bycatch is a primary driver of population declines in marine megafauna. These captures not only have environmental impacts, they also have economic consequences for fishers such as direct losses when repairing fishing gear. Therefore, evaluating the fishers’ perception of bycatch and comparing it with data from scientific fisheries observers might provide a broader view of the current situation these species face. To do this, we obtained data concerning the bycatch of 1,838 sea turtles between 2008-2018 in the Eastern Pacific Ocean as well as informative surveys from 421 artisanal fishers surveyed in 2020. There is a discrepancy between the bycatch observed and the fishers’ perceptions of it. The observers’ results identified that high rates of incidental capture of sea turtles are associated with the mahi mahi fishery that occurs during winter and is a shallow set fishery using fish as bait. The olive ridley turtle was the main species affected by bycatch. According to the fishers’ perception, bycatch was higher with the use of J-hooks and a longline (compared to circle hooks and to gill nets and trawl nets) and when the target species are pelagic fish during the winter season. In addition, the fishers’ perception showed that 39.4% considered incidental fishing as an environmental problem and 28.5% considered it as a nuisance, while 32.1% do not consider sea turtle bycatch as a problem. These findings suggest that 60% of fishers do not consider it a need to protect sea turtles. Given the different responses between fisheries observers and fishers’ perception, it is clear that more dialogue is necessary to raise awareness about the effects of bycatch on worldwide sea turtle populations. Thus, there is an enormous potential to recruit/increase fishers’ active participation for turtle protection. [Aim of the study]: Traditional vineyards have, in the last few decades, been transformed into trellis systems, but little research has been carried out into the consequences as regards biodiversity. We compared the abundance and species richness of reptiles in conventional-traditional vineyards and trellis vineyards., [Area of study]: The study was conducted in a wine appellation area of origin denominated as Montilla-Moriles, Southern Spain., [Material and methods]: Reptile’s species richness and abundance were estimated by walking transects in 24 different vineyards (12 trellis and 12 traditional vineyards) in four consecutive years., [Main results]: The results showed an extremely low abundance in both management systems, since no reptiles were recorded in 43.1% of the transects. However, there was a greater abundance and diversity of reptiles in the traditional vineyards than in the trellis vineyards, with 7 vs. 3 species being found in traditional and trellis vineyards, respectively., [Research highlights]: The lack of refuge in trellis vineyards owing to the vertical growth of plants, whose branches grow higher from the ground, is probably the main cause of the lower abundance and species richness found in trellis systems, since both types of vineyard had bare ground owing to ploughing and the application of herbicides. Since the transformation of traditional vineyards into those with trellis systems is often subsidized, this modernization should be accompanied by certain agri-environmental measures (e.g., cover crops, artificial refuges or natural hedges) in order to compensate for the associated negative effects.

[ES]: El calentamiento global, junto con la acidificación de los océanos y la intensificación de la actividad pesquera compromete la conservación de los arrecifes de coral. Este estudio se centró en los arrecifes marginales de Ecuador porque tienen mayor capacidad de adaptación y soportan condiciones ambientales adversas. El objetivo del trabajo fue comparar el estado de conservación de los arrecifes coralinos en 2017 y 2021. Para ello, se realizaron 2 transectos en las zonas de cresta y pendiente, muestreando mediante un cuadrante de 1x1m cada 10 metros a lo largo de todo el arrecife. Este cuadrante se subdividió en 100 cuadrículas y de este se obtuvieron los porcentajes de coral vivo, coral muerto, coral fracturado y presencia de redes de monofilamentos. Los datos obtenidos reflejan que la cresta del coral es el lugar más sensible a la actividad pesquera independientemente del año. La cresta es el lugar donde más coral fracturado y coral muerto se encontró a consecuencia de los enredos de las artes de pesca en los corales y su posterior intento de desenredo, en consecuencia, fue el lugar con mayor proporción de redes (con más presencia en 2017 que en 2021). Tras la obtención de estos resultados y la evaluación del nivel de conservación del coral, se destaca la importancia de conservar estos hábitats degradados y la necesidad de seguir investigando en la conservación de estos ecosistemas que son grandes fuentes de biodiversidad y servicios ecosistémicos., [EN]: Global warming, ocean acidification and fishing intensification jeopardise coral reef conservation. This study focused in marginal reefs of Ecuador due to their greater adaptability and capability to endure adverse environmental conditions. The aim of this research was to compare the conservation status of coral reefs in 2017 and 2021. In order to accomplish it, two transects were made in the ridge and slope areas, sampling through one square meter every ten meters through the entire reef. Those quadrants were subdivided into one hundred smaller squares to obtain percentages of live, dead and fractured coral, as well as monofilament networks from each square. The data obtained reflected that the coral crest was the most sensitive area to fishing activity regardless of the year. On the other hand, the ridge was the place where more fractured and dead coral were found, result of the entanglement of fishing gears and subsequent attempt to unravel, which made this place the one with the highest proportion of nets (with a major presence in 2017 than 2021). After obtaining these results and after evaluating which is the level of coral conservation, we wanted to highlight the importance of preserving these degraded habitats along with the need to continue researching the conservation of these ecosystems, which are great and important sources of biodiversity.

The intensification of agriculture in olive groves, especially the modification or elimination of spontaneous vegetation, alters the relationships in arthropod communities and reduces their interactions and ecosystem services. This study was carried out in nine olive groves in which there was either a planted cover crop, spontaneous cover crop or bare ground. The interactions of ground-dwelling, canopy and flying arthropods in trophic webs were calculated for each olive grove soil management regime at the family level taking into consideration their different functional traits: feeding guilds, specific agricultural traits and trophic level. Olive groves with spontaneous cover had trophic webs with a higher number of plausible links between arthropod families and a more balanced distribution of specimens among trophic levels compared to those with planted cover and bare ground. There was a similar number of arthropod families consisting of both pests and their natural enemies in the planted cover regime, while olive groves with bare ground had simpler trophic webs. The complexity of plausible trophic links was greater in olive groves with spontaneous plant cover despite the similar values for family richness in the three-olive grove soil management regimes. Qualitative values (such as functional traits) were more diverse in agroecosystems with spontaneous plant cover in which there were more sources of food.

Super high-density olive groves (>800 trees ha−1) are rapidly expanding in olive oil producer countries, which entails a strong modification of the olive growing system with important agronomic, economic, sociocultural, and environmental consequences. Among them, the latter is particularly unknown. The aim of this paper is to bring the attention on the environmental impacts of super high-density olive groves, by systematically reviewing the current evidence and identifying knowledge gaps yet to be filled. As a result, we can argue that new super high-density olive plantations reduce habitat heterogeneity and complexity, and the younger trees of these plantations impoverish habitat quality for farmland biodiversity. In addition, the high input use (e.g. phytosanitary treatments, fertilisers and water supply) may entail ecological impacts as well. Therefore, we conclude that i) new highly intensive olive groves should be limited to areas with lower ecological value; ii) consumers should have more information concerning how is produced the olive oil they buy, including the environmental impacts produced; iii) agricultural policies should be reformulated following the provider-gets principle; iv) input use (fertilisers, pesticides, water, etc.) should be gradually optimised to reduce the environmental impact; and finally, v) more research is necessary to foster decisions based on science.

Natural and human-induced stressors have threatened the sustainability of the fish communities of coral-rocky reefs worldwide in the last decades. The composition of the fish communities on the reefs of Ecuador and the factors affecting spatiotemporal changes are unknown. We studied the influence of the descriptors of structural complexity, the current status of coral and human-induced variables over fish communities. A video transect method was used to assess fish communities in three zones (slope, crest, and bottom) of two reefs during two seasons (rainy and dry). The structure of fish communities was highly influenced by the zones and season; rugosity and live coral affected the fish composition on the crest and slope zones. The fractured coral and derelict fishing gear on coral produced an adverse effect on fish composition over the crest. A multifactorial process causing loss of structural complexity and affecting fish composition was identified, however, periodical assessment is required for a greater understanding of this process.

Three passive samplings (May, June and July) were performed in each study plot to estimate the abundance and the species richness of potential Cicadomorphas vectors of Xylella fastidiosa. In each sampling, eight yellow sticky traps (22 × 35 cm) were randomly distributed in each study plot (n = 144 traps).Main results: The Cicadomorpha communities were mainly affected by landscape variables (such as the total surface and the distance to remnants of natural vegetation) and environmental variables (such as the temperature, moisture or ETo), whereas cover crops played a secondary role in the abundance of the Cicadomorpha.Research highlights: The results of the study suggest that Cicadomorpha richness and abundance depend on the structural complexity provided by cover crops (positive effect) and live hedges (negative effect), which may be owing to the higher food abundance and shelter when cover crops are present, whereas higher insect predation may occur close to hedges, probably owing to insectivorous song birds.

Monitoring European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) populations using suitable methods is crucial, especially in those areas in which endangered predators remain and rabbits occur at low densities. We first counted the number of rabbits, the number of scattered pellets, and the number of latrines counted within 16 plots established in areas of low rabbit density, showing that the number of rabbits counted inside the plots was more closely correlated with the number of pellets counted than with the number of latrines. In addition, no latrines were found in 8 plots. In 53 walking transects, the number of pellets m−2 and the number of latrines km−1 had a positive relationship, but no significant correlation was obtained between the two methods when only the transects with a low rabbit abundance were selected. These results suggest that although counting latrines can be useful to compare areas with different abundances, it may underestimate rabbit abundance at low abundances where counting scattered pellets is, therefore, the most accurate alternative. © 2019, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

The nesting environment is known to significantly affect the breeding success of sea turtles. Sandy beach habitats, where sea turtles nest, are frequently affected by high tides and waves on Ecuadorian beaches during windy events. The objectives of this study were: i) to determine the variables that affect nest site selection by two sea turtle species, Eretmochelys imbricata and Chelonia mydas in Ecuador, ii) to compare features of the nesting places of successful vs. failed clutches and iii) to quantify the changes in the intensity and frequency of the tide and its relation to the loss of eggs for the last 10 years. We monitored 15 hawksbill and 26 green turtle nests for two years on five beaches on the mainland coast of Ecuador. The results show that the presence of a dune scarps negatively affected successful nesting, while the proportion of eggs lost was positively associated with road distance, sea distance and nest depth. In addition, the results showed that the loss of eggs was greater for the green turtle, the presence of dune scarps and tides. Finally, using the data available on hatching success over the last 10 years we found a significant relationship between the intensity of the tides and the loss of eggs during this period. We conclude that nest site selection and hatching success vary with beach microhabitats and therefore local information is needed to protect suitable habitats.

Assessing the pathways by which alien species are introduced is essential if we are to identify potential risks and evaluate management decisions. Intentional introductions are responsible for the introductions of millions of animals throughout Latin America. We explore: (1) the relative role of several intentional introduction pathways (hunting, feeding, fur, biological control, the pet trade and others) in the general context of introductions of alien species; (2) the relative importance of the intentional pathways across the different taxa; (3) similar patterns as regards the composition of alien species across countries, (4) the underlying factors that drive the richness of alien species in Latin America, and (5) the potential impacts of alien species on the region. According to our results, 69 species of mammals and 62 species of birds were introduced into Latin America by means of intentional pathways, of which the most important taxa were Artiodactyls, Primates, Passeriformes and Psittaciformes. The main introductions pathways were the pet/ornamental trades (70.9%) for birds, and hunting (39.1%) and pet trade/ornamental purposes (37.7%) for mammals. The composition of species differed among countries, with a higher richness of species in those countries with a high percentage of urban populations, with a higher native species biodiversity, with a high % of GDP owing to imports (birds) and in those with a high number of trafficked species (mammals). This review stresses that the pet trade and hunting are important pathways for the introduction of alien species, some of which have had severe impacts on many countries.

The biodiversity of farmed landscapes is, in the context of agricultural intensification, a key aspect with regard to improving the sustainability of agroecosystems. Olive groves are undergoing rapid changes because of the spread of intensive farming systems, which may have negative environmental impacts. This paper reports a survey on the aboveground flora and seed banks in five olive groves located in Andalusia (Southern Spain). In this study, the following three management systems have been compared: no‐tillage, with the mowing of spontaneous weedy vegetation; no‐tillage, with the mowing of planted cover crops (Poaceae); and conventional tillage practices. Results showed that coverage and an abundance of vegetation are favored by spontaneous weedy vegetation with mowing management, while the richness of aboveground species was affected by landscape diversity and the presence of edges, which increases the richness and diversity of aboveground flora species in olive groves. Seed bank composition showed a low relationship with aboveground flora in the three cover crop management systems. The multivariate analysis performed pointed to those seed species that have a major influence on the aboveground flora communities of each of the three agricultural systems. The seed bank was clearly impoverished in terms of both abundance and species richness after the long‐term conventional tillage practices. We conclude that the intensive long‐term conventional tillage dramatically reduces weed communities in olive orchards and the subsequent ecosystem services provided by them.

Hard coral coverage contributes to increasing the structural complexity of coral reefs, provides biological resources and drives biological and ecological interactions among reef organisms. Declines in the structural complexity and coral diversity of tropical reefs, due to the influence of anthropogenic activities, have been reported around the world in recent decades; however, coral reefs on the continental coast of Ecuador have been poorly studied. From September 2017 to April 2018, the method of permanent belt transects and quadrats was used to assess the status of coral (percentage of live, dead and fractured coral) to determine the contribution of derelict fishing gear to the process of coral fracture, which causes loss of structural complexity on two marginal coral-rocky reefs in the central coast of Manabi-Ecuador: Perpetuo Socorro and Ureles. Three geomorphological zones [crest (5–7 m depth), slope (7–10 m depth) and bottom (10–13 m depth)] were assessed. Results show that the crest zone in Ureles reef was highly affected by the entanglement of nets compared with Perpetuo Socorro, and identify derelict fishing gear as a key driver in the process of the fracturing and fragmentation of coral. Seasonal and site-associated factors also had a significant effect on the structural complexity of the reef studied. Destruction of coral in the crest zones drastically affects invertebrate and fish communities. We recommend a periodical assessment to measure the loss of structural complexity plus the implementation of a recovery program for the reefs studied that involves the education, active participation and collaboration of artisanal fishermen, governmental organizations and universities.

Cover crops can be an effective means to protect soil and reduce risks of erosion in olive groves. However, for this protection to be significant, the vegetation must attain a significant amount of ground cover, which is estimated to be at least 30% during the rainy season. In olive groves on degraded soils, which occupy large surface areas in the olive-growing areas of the Mediterranean region, the establishment of cover crops may be an arduous challenge, particularly in areas with a high density of rabbits. In this study, we have selected two olive orchards with scarce natural vegetation located in Andalusia (southern Spain), in which rabbit populations intensively forage the cover crops, to test whether the self-seeding of an unpalatable species corn chamomile (Anthemis arvensis L.; A. arvensis for short) could achieve sufficient coverage for soil protection, in the year following that in which the broadcast-seeding was carried out for the implementation of cover crops. The hand broadcast-seeding of A. arvensis was carried out on sixteen elementary plots in the lanes of the two olive orchards in the autumn of 2015, and seed germination in the subsequent self-seeding took place in the autumn of 2016. The plant height and A. arvensis ground cover in these plots were measured throughout the two growth cycles, and aerial biomass was measured at maturity. The results showed that there were no significant differences in the maximum plant height between the two growth cycles (mean ± SD of 21.2 ± 1.6 cm), while the ground cover was significantly greater in the case of self-seeding, especially during the winter (37.2 ± 8.1 and 9.3 ± 6.7% for self-seeding and broadcast-seeding, respectively), and aerial biomass at maturity had more than doubled (99.7 and 43.9 g m−2, respectively). The effectiveness of using standardized sampling methods for fish communities in coral and rocky reefs has been widely discussed because it largely depends on the experience and skill of the observer, availability of high-definition equipment and the stability of local environmental parameters. The rocky reefs in Ecuador have highly variable conditions of turbidity, which can generate biases in the sampling of reef fish. The present work compares the effectiveness of detection of two sampling methods: 1) observer-band transects and 2) video-transects, as tools to determine the composition of fish communities in two rocky reefs subjected to high anthropic pressure and high variability in the conditions of turbidity. To achieve this goal, 48 transects of 100 m and variable-width on the dependence of turbidity conditions were performed in three geomorphological reef zones: the crest, slope, and bottom, where a community of fish was sampled from September 2017 to April 2018 using both methods. The results showed significant differences in the fish abundance recorded depending on the sampling method, the video-transect method was more efficient for the estimation of abundance. Comparison of the survey methods in reef zones showed that video-transects are more effective in detecting significant differences in abundance on the slopes of the reefs in comparison with observer-band transects. Turbidity significantly affected the abundance of fish detected by both sampling methods. Our results suggest that the video-transect method is more efficient to record fish abundance with respect to the observer-transect method under different conditions of turbidity.
