Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical compound extensively employed in plastic manufacturing, and this pollutant has been detected in diverse aquatic organisms, notably bivalves. In order to comprehend the ecological and toxicological consequences of BPA Bisphenol A in these organisms, it is essential to examine the physiological and biochemical effects and identify areas where our understanding is lacking. This knowledge is crucial for determining the environn ental threat posed by bisphenol A and assisting decision-makers in establishing the appropriate priorities. This investigation aimed to assess the impact of BPA on the biochemical and physiological parameters of the freshwater mussel Potomida littoralis. In a laboratory setting, mussels were subjected to two different levels of BPA (20 and 100 μg/L) for a duration of 21 days. Filtration rate was calculated from the clearance of neutral red, fed to mussels at different BPA concentrations. The mussel's filtration rate capacity declined as BPA exposure intensified, potentially due to the mussel's attempt to close its valves and minimize BPA absorption, thus preventing cellular damage. In the digestive gland tissue, key antioxidant and detoxification defenses, including catalase (CAT) activity, glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity, and levels of H2O2 and glutathione (GSH), were activated, particularly at the 100 μg/L BPA concentration. This activation helped protect against lipid damage at higher BPA concentrations. This review examines the role of soil and sediment organisms as bioindicators in environmental pollution assessment. As fundamental elements of terrestrial ecosystems, soils harbour a rich and diverse biodiversity that plays a key role in regulating ecological processes. The use of bioindicators provides a sensitive and specific approach to detecting the effects of chemical, biological, and physical pollutants on soil health. The review presents a detailed analysis of the types of contaminants commonly encountered, the soil organisms used as bioindicators, and the criteria for selecting the most appropriate bioindicators. It also discusses assessment methods, including soil sampling and analysis techniques, and the biological and ecological indices used to measure contamination. Regional case studies illustrate the practical application of bioindicators for assessing soil quality in different geographical contexts. The review also highlights current challenges to the use of bioindicators, such as technical limitations and the variability of organism responses, and suggests perspectives for future research, including technological innovation and the integration of bioindicators into environmental policy. Cypermethrin (CYP) is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide, used in agriculture, and one of the most common contaminants in freshwater aquatic systems. This paper reports an evaluation of the toxicity of CYP in the mosquitofish, exposed to two concentrations (0.2 ng/L and 6.25 ng/L). The result revealed a significant modulation in the activity of antioxidants enzymes, superoxide dismutase, catalase and decreased acetylcholinesterase after 7 days. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde levels remained elevated throughout the exposure duration. CYP causes gills and liver oxidative stress, modifying the antioxidant enzymes. Principal component analysis highlighted relationship between biomarkers in functional response. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been reported as stressors for the bivalves' immune system at different regulatory levels, impacting the detection step and receptors, and other mediators, as well as effector molecules. However, studies on how AgNPs impact the transmission of signals from receptors and whether they have an effect on mediators and transcription factors are still scarce. This study aims to investigate the effect of 12 hours of in vivo exposure to 100 µg/L of AgNPs on the gene expression of the cytosolic adaptor Myeloid, the differentiation protein 88 (MgMyD88-b), and the interferon regulatory factor (Me4-IRF) in the gills and digestive gland of Mytilus galloprovincialis, before and after blocking two major uptake pathways of nanoparticles (clathrin- and caveolae-mediated endocytosis). The results illustrate a tissue-specific gene expression of the MgMyD88-b and the Me4-IRF in the gills and digestive gland of M. galloprovincialis. In the gills, AgNPs did not significantly impact the expression of the two genes. However, blocking the caveolae-mediated endocytosis decreased the expression of Me4-IRF. However, inhibition of clathrin-mediated endocytosis in the digestive gland recorded a significant decrease in the expression of MgMyD88-b. Overall, the inhibition of the AgNPs' uptake routes have highlighted their potential interference with the immune response through the studied mediators' genes, which need to be studied further in future investigations. Diuron herbicide is widely used for weeds control in many kinds of cultivations. It reaches the waterbodies through various fate routes and can adversely threaten non-target organism. The current study was carried out to evaluate the antioxidant activity of Spirulina as feed additive against the toxicity of Diuron concentrations (40 and 80 µg/L) on the edible mollusk Mytilus galloprovincialis during seven days of exposure. Oxidative stress biomarkers were applied on mussel gills and digestive gland, investigating changes in enzymes activities such as catalase (CAT), Glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and the Malondialdehyde level (MDA). The obtained results show that diuron altered oxidative stress biomarkers in both organs, gills and digestive gland. Performed principle component analysis (PCA) highlighted relationship between biomarkers involved in functional response. Spirulina platensis supplemented diet (1 mg/L), completely ameliorated diuron-induced oxidative stress in mussel tissues. Thus, Spirulina seems to be a promising microalgae and eco-friendly tool helping the health recovery of aquatic animals subjected to environmental stressors. This study provided recent and new data on the impact of Diuron in marine bivalve and the protective effect of Spirulina against Diuron-induced oxidative stress. The phosphate fertilizer and phosphoric acid industries increase phosphogypsum levels in the aquatic environment leading to various disturbing effects. In the present work, we investigated the bio-uptake of heavy metals following the exposure of Ruditapes decussatus to three concentrations of phosphogypsum, 10, 20 and 40 g kg−1, under laboratory conditions. The amounts of Zn, Cd and Pb in several organs of the clam Ruditapes decussatus was determined using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Phosphogypsum acts on the behaviour of R. decussatus by increasing filtration rates. The most treatments showed significantly higher metal concentration in all tissues than the controls. Excavation behaviour was altered in treated bivalves compared to controls. The filtration rate (FR) of clams was significantly affected by exposure to phosphogypsum. Indeed, FR increased in clams exposed to phosphogypsum. Phosphogypsum has decreased SOD, CAT and MDA activities in the gills, digestive gland, gonad and muscles according to the concentration indicating a defense against oxidative stress. AChE was significantly inhibited in clams from all the sampling sites compared to controls. The considered parameters could be useful biomarkers for the evaluation of phosphogypsum toxicity in threatened biota. This study was conducted as part of a further investigation into the use of a comprehensive approach combining chemical and biological parameters to assess the health status of the Gabes gulf population. Perfluoroalkyls are stable synthetic chemicals, used in the manufacturing of various industrial products. The release of these compounds in natural ecosystems could interact with living organisms leading to sea food species modification. Laboratory experiments were performed to assess its toxicity on the marine invertebrate Gammarus insensibilis. The LC50 determined by the Regtox package considering several concentrations (5, 10, 15, and 20 mg/L) was about 9.99 mg/L. The biomarkers response was analyzed using adult crustacean treated with 1, 1.6, and 3.1 mg/L of PFOS for 4 days. At the end of the exposure, the activities of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and superoxyde dismutase (SOD) as well as the malondialdehyde rate (MDA) were measured. The SOD activity was increased at low concentration of PFOS, in contract to the highest one, where it decreased. The AChE activity remains relatively unchangeable during exposure to the tested concentrations, indicating that PFOS is not neurotoxic. The rate of MDA increased after exposure to 1 mg/L of PFOS, which reveals a possible membranous deterioration. The results indicated that oxidative stress and cell damage might be one of the main mechanisms of PFOS toxicity to organisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic-heavy metal that induces a wide range of behavioural, biochemical and physiological effects in aquatic organisms. Oxidative damage has been proposed as a possible mechanism involved in cadmium toxicity. The current study was carried out to evaluate the antioxidant activity of Spirulina as feed additive (1 mg/L) against the toxicity of cadmium (Cd) 0.5 mg/L in freshwater mussel Unio ravoisieri. At the end of the exposed period of 4 days, digestive gland antioxidant status Superoxide dismutase, Catalase, Glutathione-S-transferase and damage markers such as Malondialdehyde and Protein carbonyl were determined. Associations between biomarkers were assessed by a multivariate analysis technique, principal component analysis (PCA). The results of this study revealed that digestive gland antioxidant status showed a significant decrease when mussels were exposed to Cd. Superoxide dismutase, Catalase and Glutathione-S-transferase activities in the Cd + SP group were significantly higher than the Cd group (p < 0.05). Tissue levels of malondialdehyde and protein carbonyl in the Cd + SP group were significantly lower than the Cd group (P < 0.05). Our results show that the pretreatment with Spirulina protects the mussel from Cadmium-induced tissue damage by its antioxidant properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biomonitoring has become a useful tool in environmental risk assessment of anthropogenic activities releasing disturbing pollutants. Permethrin, used worldwide to control a wide range of pest insects, can threaten aquatic biota, potentially useful as precocious bioindicators in ecotoxicology. This study seeks to assess the acute toxicity permethrin to the freshwater beetle, its availability in water, as well as, its uptake. The acute toxicity of permethrin to non-target species was studied under laboratory conditions to assess its effect, after the exposure 48 h, on the freshwater beetle Laccophilus minitus considering changes in some enzymatic activities; a specific biomarker of neurotoxicity (acetylcholinesterase) and a non-specific biomarker of oxidative stress (superoxide dismutase and catalase). The rates of permethrin in water and insects were determined using gas chromatography. The low measured concentration of the pesticide 0.0013 μg/L didńt modify the SOD and CAT activities in comparison with controls, only the high concentrations (0.023 and 0.18 μg/L) induced a significant increase in the enzyme activity. A similar profile was recorded for the H2O2 level. The permethrin treatment induced a drastic depletion of AChE activity. As outcomes, uptake at a low level (<6.8 ± 0.43 ng/g dry weight) showed to be the factor underlying the alterations in the beetles exposed to permethrin. Such findings provide information on the behaviour of permethrin within the environment and its biological target through its neurotoxicity and induction of oxidative stress in a freshwater beetle. Synthesized Mn-doped ZnS nanoparticles, with 10% of Mn dopant, were used to investigate their environmental toxicity. Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (QDs) stabilized by 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) were synthesized in a basic aqueous solution using the nucleation doping. The optical properties and structure of the obtained Mn (10%):ZnS QDs have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, UV-vis, photoluminescence spectroscopies and transmission electron microscopy. The brain, gills and liver stained sections from Gambusia affinis were dissected. Antioxidant enzyme activities (acetylcholinesterase and catalase), as well as malondialdehyde and H2O2 levels, were determined after exposure (94 h) to 14 and 28 mg/L of nanoparticles. The obtained nearly monodisperse Mn(10%):ZnS@MPA QDs have an average diameter of ca. 2.8 nm and a zinc-blende crystal structure. Mn-doped ZnS acts differently on the activities of the biomarkers in a dose-dependent manner. The recorded alterations varied between organs. To understand acute toxicity and oxidative stress of perfluorinated compounds in the freshwater ecosystems, we exposed freshwater mussels (Unio ravoisieri) to perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), over a range of concentrations from 10 to 100 mg/L, in a laboratory experiment. Lethal concentration (LC50) was of about 65.9 mg/L after 96 h of exposure. The oxidative stress was assessed in gill and digestive gland of the freshwater mussels after 7 days of exposure to different nominal PFOS concentrations (C1= 2 mg/L, C2 = 6 mg/L and C3= 10 mg/L). C1 and C2 increased significantly (p < .05) the superoxide dismutase activity in both tissues compared, while the highest C3 decreased the enzyme activity. This implements an unfavourable response that highlights the excess of reactive oxygen species produced after contamination. The Catalase activity was also increased by about 40.05% and 66.63%, respectively, in gill and digestive gland after exposure to C3. The Malondialdehyde (MDA) level was increased in both gill and digestive gland in a concentration-dependent pattern. In contrast, the contamination of U. ravoisieri by PFOS did not affect the acetylcholinesterase activity in both organs (p > .005). These results provided information on potential biomarkers that could be effectively applied for the monitoring of freshwater ecosystem using indicator species such as U. ravoisieri. Bioindicators have been generating great interest in environmental pollution research. Insects and especially arthropod are useful to assess the effects of anthropogenic activities on the terrestrial ecosystem, because they are inclose contact with toxic elements present in soil and in leaf litter. Beetles are extremely sensitive to several ecological parameters, react quickly to environmental modifications and can be easily and cost-effectively sampled by various methods. These criteria make beetles excellent indicators of terrestrial ecosystem. In order to evaluate the environmental impact of human activities on different ecosystems, the use of Coleoptera in ecological studies has been largely increased in recent years. Pyrethroids, the widely used pesticides, are highly toxic to aquatic organisms. However, little information is available on their toxicity on crustaceans. We utilized imagoes of Echinogammarus tacapensis to elucidate the effects of sublethal concentrations of permethrin. The LC50 (48, 72, and 96 h) was assessed considering several pesticide concentrations (ranging between 0.5 and 100 ng L−1) using the Regtox package and were found to be 13.88, 8.974, and 4.259 ng L−1, respectively. The biomarkers’ response was analyzed using animals exposed to 0.35, 0.7, and 1.4 ng/L of permethrin for 4 days. The catalase activity was significantly induced after 48 h of exposure to the three permethrin concentrations. Additionally, the glutathione S-transferase activity was increased in a concentration-dependent manner. However, exposed to C1 (0.35 ng L−1), the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity showed no significant change compared to control values. The hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) rate was found to be similar to the SOD variation. Our findings suggest that permethrin poses a potential threat to freshwater amphipods and thus, the test species can be a useful tool for pesticide toxicity biomonitoring due to their small size, easy husbandry, short life cycle, and high fecundity. The present study was designed to investigate the effect of carbaryl (carbamate insecticide) on the acetylcholinesterase activity in two strains (same clone A) of the crustacean cladoceranDaphnia magna. Four carbaryl concentrations (0.4, 0.9, 1.8 and 3.7 µg L−1) were compared against control AChE activity. Our results showed that after 48 h of carbaryl exposure, all treatments induced a significant decrease of AChE activities whatever the two considered strains. However, different responses were registered in terms of lowest observed effect concentrations (LOEC: 0.4 µg L−1for strain 1 and 0.9 µg L−1for strains 2) revealing differences in sensitivity among the two tested strains ofD. magna. These results suggest that after carbaryl exposure, the AChE activity responses can be also used as a biomarker of susceptibility. Moreover, our results show that strain1 is less sensitive than strain 2 in terms of IC50-48 h of AChE activity. Comparing the EC50-48 h of standard ecotoxicity test and IC50-48 h of AChE inhibition, there is the same order of sensitivity with both strains. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
