Existing haptic actuators are often rigid and limited in their ability to replicate real-world tactile sensations. We present a wearable haptic artificial muscle skin (HAMS) based on fully soft, millimeter-scale, multilayer dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) capable of significant out-of-plane deformation, a capability that typically requires rigid or liquid biasing. The DEAs use a thickness-varying multilayer structure to achieve large out-of-plane displacement and force, maintaining comfort and wearability. Experimental results demonstrate that HAMS can produce complex tactile feedback with high perception accuracy. Moreover, we show that HAMS can be integrated into extended reality (XR) systems, enhancing immersion and offering potential applications in entertainment, education, and assistive technologies.

Wearable haptics serve as an enhanced media to connect humans and VR/robots. The inevitable sweating issue in all wearables creates a bottleneck for wearable haptics, as the sweat/moisture accumulated in the skin/device interface can substantially affect feedback accuracy, comfortability, and create hygienic problems. Nowadays, wearable haptics typically gain performance at the cost of sacrificing the breathability, comfort, and biocompatibility. Here, we developed a fully integrated breathable haptic textile (FIBHT) to solve these trade-off issues, where the FIBHT exhibits high-level integration of 128 pixels over the palm, great stretchability of 400%, and superior permeability of over 657 g/m2/day (moisture) and 40 mm/s (air). It is a stand-alone haptic system totally composed of stretchable, breathable, and bioadhesive materials, which empowers it with precise, sweating/movement-insensitive and dynamic feedback, and makes FIBHT powerful for virtual touching in broad scenarios.

The dense mechanoreceptors in human fingertips enable texture discrimination. Recent advances in flexible electronics have created tactile sensors that effectively replicate slowly adapting (SA) and rapidly adapting (RA) mechanoreceptors. However, the influence of dermatoglyphic structures on tactile signal transmission, such as the effect of fingerprint ridge filtering on friction-induced vibration frequencies, remains unexplored. A novel multi-layer flexible sensor with an artificially synthesized skin surface capable of replicating arbitrary fingerprints is developed. This sensor simultaneously detects pressure (SA response) and vibration (RA response), enabling texture recognition. Fingerprint ridge patterns from notable historical figures - Rosa Parks, Richard Nixon, Martin Luther King Jr., and Ronald Reagan - are fabricated on the sensor surface. Vibration frequency responses to assorted fabric textures are measured and compared between fingerprint replicas. Results demonstrate that fingerprint topography substantially impacts skin-surface vibrational transmission. Specifically, Parks fingerprint structure conveyed higher frequencies more clearly than those of Nixon, King, or Reagan. This work suggests individual fingerprint ridge morphological variation influences tactile perception and can confer adaptive advantages for fine texture discrimination. The flexible bioinspired sensor provides new insights into human vibrotactile processing by modeling fingerprint-filtered mechanical signals at the finger-object interface.

Atypical sensory processing is common in autism, but how neural coding is disrupted in sensory cortex is unclear. We evaluate whisker touch coding in L2/3 of somatosensory cortex (S1) in Cntnap2-/- mice, which have reduced inhibition. This classically predicts excess pyramidal cell spiking, but this remains controversial, and other deficits may dominate. We find that c-fos expression is elevated in S1 of Cntnap2-/- mice under spontaneous activity conditions but is comparable to that of control mice after whisker stimulation, suggesting normal sensory-evoked spike rates. GCaMP8m imaging from L2/3 pyramidal cells shows no excess whisker responsiveness, but it does show multiple signs of degraded somatotopic coding. This includes broadened whisker-tuning curves, a blurred whisker map, and blunted whisker point representations. These disruptions are greater in noisy than in sparse sensory conditions. Tuning instability across days is also substantially elevated in Cntnap2-/-. Thus, Cntnap2-/- mice show no excess sensory-evoked activity, but a degraded and unstable tactile code in S1.

Affective touch-a slow, gentle, and pleasant form of touch-activates a different neural network than which is activated during discriminative touch in humans. Affective touch perception is enabled by specialized low-threshold mechanoreceptors in the skin with unmyelinated fibers called C tactile (CT) afferents. These CT afferents are conserved across mammalian species, including macaque monkeys. However, it is unknown whether the neural representation of affective touch is the same across species and whether affective touch's capacity to activate the hubs of the brain that compute socioaffective information requires conscious perception. Here, we used functional MRI to assess the preferential activation of neural hubs by slow (affective) vs. fast (discriminative) touch in anesthetized rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta). The insula, anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), amygdala, and secondary somatosensory cortex were all significantly more active during slow touch relative to fast touch, suggesting homologous activation of the interoceptive-allostatic network across primate species during affective touch. Further, we found that neural responses to affective vs. discriminative touch in the insula and ACC (the primary cortical hubs for interoceptive processing) changed significantly with age. Insula and ACC in younger animals differentiated between slow and fast touch, while activity was comparable between conditions for aged monkeys (equivalent to >70 y in humans). These results, together with prior studies establishing conserved peripheral nervous system mechanisms of affective touch transduction, suggest that neural responses to affective touch are evolutionarily conserved in monkeys, significantly impacted in old age, and do not necessitate conscious experience of touch.

Circadian rhythms are generated by the master pacemaker suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in concert with local clocks throughout the body. Although many brain regions exhibit cycling clock gene expression, the identity of a discrete extra-SCN brain oscillator that produces rhythmic behavior has remained elusive. Here, we show that an extra-SCN oscillator in the lateral amygdala (LA) is defined by expression of the clock-output molecule mWAKE/ANKFN1. mWAKE is enriched in the anterior/dorsal LA (adLA), and, strikingly, selective disruption of clock function or excitatory signaling in adLAmWAKE neurons abolishes Period2 (PER2) rhythms throughout the LA. mWAKE levels rise at night and promote rhythmic excitability of adLAmWAKE neurons by upregulating Ca2+-activated K+ channel activity specifically at night. adLAmWAKE neurons coordinate rhythmic sensory perception and anxiety in a clock-dependent and WAKE-dependent manner. Together, these data reveal the cellular identity of an extra-SCN brain oscillator and suggest a multi-level hierarchical system organizing molecular and behavioral rhythms. Shear stress sensing represents a vital mode of mechanosensation. 1 Previous efforts have mainly focused on characterizing how various cell types—for example, vascular endothelial cells—sense shear stress arising from fluid flow within the animal body. 1,2 How animals sense shear stress derived from their external environment, however, is not well understood. Here, using C. elegans as a model, we show that external fluid flow triggers behavioral responses in C. elegans , facilitating their navigation of the environment during swimming. Such behavioral responses primarily result from shear stress generated by fluid flow. The sensory neurons AWC, ASH, and ASER are the major shear stress-sensitive neurons, among which AWC shows the most robust response to shear stress and is required for shear stress-induced behavior. Mechanistically, shear stress signals are transduced by G protein signaling in AWC, with cGMP as the second messenger, culminating in the opening of cGMP-sensitive cyclic nucleotide-gated (CNG) channels and neuronal excitation. These studies demonstrate that C. elegans senses and responds to shear stress and characterize the underlying neural and molecular mechanisms. Somatosensory coding in rodents has been mostly studied in the whisker system and hairy skin, whereas the function of low-threshold mechanoreceptors (LTMRs) in the rodent glabrous skin has received scant attention, unlike in primates where the glabrous skin has been the focus. The relative activation of different LTMR subtypes carries information about vibrotactile stimuli, as does the rate and temporal patterning of LTMR spikes. Rate coding depends on the probability of a spike occurring on each stimulus cycle (reliability), whereas temporal coding depends on the timing of spikes relative to the stimulus cycle (precision). Using in vivo extracellular recordings in male rats and mice of either sex, we measured the reliability and precision of LTMR responses to tactile stimuli including sustained pressure and vibration. Similar to other species, rodent LTMRs were separated into rapid-adapting (RA) or slow-adapting based on their response to sustained pressure. However, unlike the dichotomous frequency preference characteristic of RA1 and RA2/Pacinian afferents in other species, rodent RAs fell along a continuum. Fitting generalized linear models to experimental data reproduced the reliability and precision of rodent RAs. The resulting model parameters highlight key mechanistic differences across the RA spectrum; specifically, the integration window of different RAs transitions from wide to narrow as tuning preferences across the population move from low to high frequencies. Our results show that rodent RAs can support both rate and temporal coding, but their heterogeneity suggests that coactivation patterns play a greater role in population coding than for dichotomously tuned primate RAs. In two experiments, we explored whether cross-modal cues can be used to improve foraging for multiple targets in a novel human foraging paradigm. Foraging arrays consisted of a 6 × 6 grid containing outline circles with a small dot on the circumference. Each dot rotated from a random starting location in steps of 30°, either clockwise or counterclockwise, around the circumference. Targets were defined by a synchronized rate of rotation, which varied from trial-to-trial, and there were two distractor sets, one that rotated faster and one that rotated slower than the target rate. In Experiment 1, we compared baseline performance to a condition in which a nonspatial auditory cue was used to indicate the rate of target rotation. While overall foraging speed remained slow in both conditions, suggesting serial scanning of the display, the auditory cue reduced target detection times by a factor of two. In Experiment 2, we replicated the auditory cue advantage, and also showed that a vibrotactile pulse, delivered to the wrist, could be almost as effective. Interestingly, a visual-cue to rotation rate, in which the frame of the display changed polarity in step with target rotation, did not lead to the same foraging advantage. Our results clearly demonstrate that cross-modal cues to synchrony can be used to improve multitarget foraging, provided that synchrony itself is a defining feature of target identity. Osteopathy is a complementary treatment method that targets motor restrictions and enhances motility through touch. While recent studies have explored the functions, dimensions, and effects of touch in osteopathy, there is a lack of research on how touch renders bodies intelligible – or what bodies, for that matter. In this article, we use the verb to affect/to be affected to explore how bodies become known by and to Dutch osteopaths, and how the senses play a role in this. Background Neck pain and headaches can arise from the lateral atlanto-axial (LAA) joint. This pain can be diagnosed with intra-articular injections of local anesthetic. A widely used technique for access to the lateral atlanto-axial joint uses a posterior approach, but this approach can be hazardous because of the proximity of the vertebral artery, the dural sac, and the C2 spinal nerve and dorsal root ganglion. Objective The objective was to describe and test a new technique for accessing the LAA joint that avoids structures that lie behind the joint. Interventions The new technique was described and tested for tolerance in 10 patients with unilateral suboccipital pain and tenderness over the LAA joint, along with evidence of LAA joint arthropathy on SPECT CT. The technique requires inserting a needle along a trajectory tangential to the dorsal surface of the C2 lamina. It involves obtaining a declined view of the C2 lamina and C2 pedicle. Conclusions In all cases, the C2 pedicle was easily identified and allowed the needle to pass asymptomatically underneath the neurovascular structures behind the joint. Objective: Premature infants require special attention during nursing. This study aimed to explore the effects of baby touch on the growth, immunity, sleep and communication in premature infants. Methods: This was a retrospective study. A total of 64 premature infants with a gestational age of 30-36 weeks were selected at Maternity & Child Care Center of Qinhuangdao from June 2022 to May 2023, and randomly divided into experimental group and control group. The control group received routine comprehensive nursing care for newborns, while the experimental group was additionally treated with touch intervention using the international standard touch method. The effects of the three months touch on the growth and development, immunological function, sleep quality, and emotional communication of the premature infants were observed. Results: No statistically significant differences were found in gender, gestational age, birth weight, birth length, or head circumference at birth between the two groups (p> 0.05). In the third month, the increases in body weight, body length and head circumference were significantly more obvious, the immunological function indicators including CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, IgG, IgA and IgM were all significantly higher, the sleep time and sleep quality were both significantly superior, and the interaction time and intimacy with parents were significantly superior in the experimental group compared with the control group, with statistically significant differences (p< 0.05). Conclusion: Baby touch can promote growth and development, strengthen immunological function, improve sleep quality and enhance the emotional communication abilities of premature infants, and help them better adapt to the environment and grow. Objectives: Tactile acuity is a somatosensory measure of the extent to which humans can discern tactile stimuli. It is influenced by how peripheral signals are processed centrally. In the oral cavity, Occlusal Tactile Acuity (OTA) is the ability to perceive minimal thicknesses between antagonist teeth. The aim of the current study was to assess the association between psychological traits and OTA of otherwise healthy individuals. Methods: Sixty‐three volunteers (32 males; mean age ± SD: 24.6 ± 2.7 years) participated in this study. Somatosensory amplification, anxiety, depression, physical symptoms and pain catastrophizing were scored using questionnaires, and subgroups of severity were created per variable based on cut‐offs. OTA was measured using 9 aluminium foils with thickness (ranging from 8 to 72 μm) and one sham test (without foil). Each thickness was tested 10 times in random order, the participants were instructed to report whether they felt the foil between their molars and the mean percentage of correct answers was computed. A linear mixed model was used with OTA as a dependent variable and psychological domain as an independent variable. Results: Significantly different OTA was observed among the anxiety subgroups (p =.003), supporting a decreased perception of thicknesses 24 and 32 μm (p =.018 and p <.001, respectively) in participants with moderate/severe anxiety compared to those with no/mild anxiety. Significantly different OTA was also observed among the pain catastrophizing subgroups (p =.008), showing decreased perception of thicknesses 32 and 40 μm (p <.001 and p =.007, respectively) in severe catastrophizing levels, compared to no/mild catastrophizing levels. No significant differences were observed for the other variables. Conclusions: Healthy adults with increased anxiety or pain catastrophizing levels show decreased interdental acuity as compared to participants with minor or no psychological impairment. The limit of stability (LoS), an index of stance balance ability, is reduced in older adults. Although contacting an earth-fixed external surface through fingertips' light touch improves older adults' stance balance control, its effects on the LoS in this population are unclear. Does light touch increase the LoS and reduce postural sway in the LoS? This study included 20 young adults (11 women and 9 men, mean age = 20.6 years) and 15 community-dwelling older adults (8 women and 7 men, mean age = 74.5 years). The position and path length of the center of pressure (CoP) during quiet standing (QS) and the anterior and posterior LoS (A-LoS and P-LoS, respectively) were measured using a force platform under two touch conditions (no-touch condition and light-touch condition). In light-touch condition, participants placed the tip of their dominant index finger on a load cell, which had an applied force of <1 N. In both touch conditions, the older group had a more limited CoP position in the anteroposterior LoS and a longer CoP path length in the QS and LoS than the younger group. In both participant groups, the light-touch condition showed a wider CoP position in the anteroposterior LoS and a shorter CoP path length in the QS and LoS than the no-touch condition. Light touch increases the anteroposterior LoS and decreases postural sway in the LoS. Virtual reality systems may benefit from wearable (fingertip-mounted) haptic displays capable of rendering the softness of virtual objects. According to neurophysiological evidence, the easiest reliable way to render a virtual softness is to generate purely tactile (as opposed to kinaesthetic) feedback to be delivered via a finger-pulp-interfaced deformable surface. Moreover, it is necessary to control not only the skin indentation depth by applying quasi-static (non-vibratory) contact pressures, but also the skin contact area. This is typically impossible with available devices, even with those that can vary the contact area, because the latter cannot be controlled due to the complexity of sensing it at high resolutions. This causes indetermination on an important tactile cue to render softness. Here, we present a technology that allows the contact area to be open-loop controlled via personalised optical calibrations. We demonstrate the solution on a modified, pneumatic wearable tactile display of softness previously described by us, consisting of a small chamber containing a transparent membrane inflated against the finger pulp. A window on the device allowed for monitoring the skin contact area with a camera from an external unit to generate a calibration curve by processing photos of the skin membrane interface at different pressures. The solution was validated by comparisons with an ink-stain-based method. Moreover, to avoid manual calibrations, a preliminary automated procedure was developed. Adaptation of reactive saccades (RS), made toward the sudden appearance of stimuli in our environment, is a plastic mechanism thought to occur at the motor level of saccade generation. As saccadic oculomotor commands integrate multisensory information in the parietal cortex and superior colliculus, adaptation of RS should occur not only toward visual but also tactile targets. In addition, saccadic adaptation in one modality (vision or touch) should transfer cross-modally. To test these predictions, we used the double-step target paradigm to adapt rightward saccades made at two different eccentricities toward the participants' index and middle fingers, identified either visually (experiment 1) or tactually (experiment 2). In each experiment, the rate of adaptation induced for the adapted modality and the rate of adaptation transfer to the nonadapted modality were compared with that measured in a control (no adaptation) session. Results revealed that touch-triggered RS can be adapted as well as visually triggered ones. Moreover, the transfer pattern was asymmetric: visual saccadic adaptation transferred fully to tactile saccades, whereas tactile saccadic adaptation, despite full generalization to nonadapted fingers, transferred only partially to visual saccades. These findings disclose that in the case of tactile saccades, adaptation can be elicited in the absence of postsaccadic visual feedback. In addition, the asymmetric adaptation transfer across sensory modalities suggests that the adaptation locus for tactile saccades may occur in part upstream of the final motor pathway common to all saccades. These findings bring new insights both on the functional loci(us) and on the error signals of RS adaptation. NEW & NOTEWORTHY: The present study revealed that, as predicted from a large literature, adaptation of visual reactive saccades transfers to tactile saccades of the same as well as neighboring amplitudes. Furthermore, in a modified double-step target paradigm, tactile saccades exposed to repeated errors adapt with a similar rate and spatial generalization as visual saccades, but this adaptation only slightly transfers to visual saccades. Background: Caress-like touch activates C-tactile (CT) afferents present in the skin of humans. It is generally assumed that this type of touch provides beneficial effects throughout the lifespan. However, little is known about its processing in later adulthood. Moreover, emotional responses to interpersonal vs. self-touch have not been investigated in older adults. Method: A total of 132 females from two age groups (older: 60–96 years; younger: 18–30) participated in a well-validated method of tactile stimulation, in which CT-optimal vs. nonoptimal soft brushing (3 cm/s vs. 30 cm/s) was administered on the forearms of the participants, once by a female experimenter and once by the participant themselves. All participants rated their affective state in each of the conditions and tactile acuity was assessed. Results: Relative to the younger group, older participants rated touch as more pleasant, independent of type (CT-optimal, non-optimal) and origin (experimenter, self). In the older group, the emotional differentiation of CT-optimal vs. non-optimal touch was reduced, which was associated with reduced tactile acuity. Conclusion: This study revealed an age-dependent enhancement of the perceived pleasantness of (self)touch. Interventions with auditory-guided CT-optimal self-touch could be easily implemented as part of training programs for older adults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research on media's effects on body perception has mainly focused on the role of vision of extreme body types. However, haptics is a major part of the way children experience bodies. Playing with unrealistically thin dolls has been linked to the emergence of body image concerns, but the perceptual mechanisms remain unknown. We explore the effects of haptic experience of extreme body types on body perception, using adaptation aftereffects. Blindfolded participants judged whether the doll-like stimuli explored haptically were thinner or fatter than the average body before and after adaptation to an underweight or overweight doll. In a second experiment, participants underwent a traditional visual adaptation paradigm to extreme bodies, using stimuli matched to those in Experiment 1. For both modalities, after adaptation to an underweight body test bodies were judged as fatter. Adaptation to an overweight body produced opposite results. For the first time, we show adiposity aftereffects in haptic modality, analogous to those established in vision, using matched stimuli across visual and haptic paradigms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Both visual and haptic softness perception have recently been shown to have multiple dimensions, such as deformability, granularity, fluidity, surface softness, and roughness. During haptic exploration, people adjust their hand motions (exploratory procedures, EPs) based on the material qualities of the object and the particular information they intend to acquire. Some of these EPs are also shown to be associated with perceived softness dimensions, for example, stroking a silk blouse or applying pressure to a pillow. Here, we aimed to investigate whether we can manipulate observers' judgments about softness attributes through exposure to videos of others performing various EPs on everyday soft materials. In two experiments, participants watched two videos of the same material: one with a corresponding EP and the other without correspondence; then, they judged these materials based on 12 softness-related adjectives (semantic differentiation method). The results of the second experiment suggested that when the EP is congruent with the dimension from which the material is chosen, the ratings for the adjectives from the same dimension are higher than the incongruent EP. This study provides evidence that participants can assess material properties from optic and mechanical cues without needing haptic signals. Grief is a core human experience. The time following the loss of a loved one is associated with an increased risk for negative health outcomes. Yet, only a few studies investigate bodily consequences of grief and consoling behaviors, specifically the potentially supportive role of interpersonal touch during grief. We conducted an online-study where participants filled in questionnaires and rated videos of short touch gestures and interactions. People who lost a loved one within the last 2 years were asked about their grief experiences and to rate the different types of touch from the perspective of a receiver. People who had not lost a close person in the last 2 years rated the touch from the perspective of providing touch to a grieving individual. The majority of the recent-loss sample reported to have perceived their own body and bodily states less after the loss. Two-thirds reported feeling the presence of the deceased at least once. Grief-sensations were experienced mostly in the chest and upper body, the same areas where the consoling effect of a hug was perceived. Overall, the recent-loss group reported amounts of wanting of the vicarious touch gestures similar to the endorsement by people taking the active touching perspective. However, discrepancies between groups were found for some types of touch, including slow affective stroking. These results contribute to a deeper understanding of the body and bodily interactions like social touch in grief and consolation. Our findings can be seen as a first point of reference on how to interact with grieving individuals and could contribute to novel interventions for individuals with prolonged grief disorder. Adult studies have shown that observed interpersonal touch provides crucial information about others' emotional states. Yet, despite the unique communicative function of touch during development, very little is known about infants' sensitivity to the emotional valence of observed touches. To investigate this issue, we measured facial electromyographic (EMG) activity in response to positive (caress) and negative (scratches) observed touches in a sample of 11‐month‐old infants. Facial EMG activity was measured over the zygomaticus major (ZM) and corrugator supercilii muscles, respectively involved in positive (i.e., smiling) and negative (i.e., frowning) facial expressions. Results have shown distinct activations of the ZM during the observation of scratches and caresses. In particular, significantly greater activation of the ZM (smiling muscle) emerged specifically in response to the observation of caresses compared to scratches. Purpose: This study, which is a cross-sectional survey, aims to investigate health-care academics, clinicians and students' perspectives of health-care simulation-based learning (SBL) and extended reality (XR) haptics use within health-care education. Participants' views regarding the application, barriers and facilitators of SBL and XR haptics were explored. Design/methodology/approach: The authors conducted an online international cross-sectional survey of 178 participants. Findings: The survey found high health-care SBL use (n = 97, 55.1%) but low awareness (n = 48, 27.3%) or prior use of XR haptics (n = 14, 7.9%). Participants expressed interest in XR haptic technology emphasising its potential in SBL, particularly for understanding anatomy and physiology, enhancing clinical reasoning and consultation and practical skills. Research limitations/implications: Whilst there was interest in XR haptics, few participants described previous experience of using this technology in SBL. A large percentage of the participants were UK-based. Most participants were from a nurse or physiotherapy professional background. Practical implications: XR haptics is a developing technology for SBL in health-care education. Whilst there was clear interest from survey participants, further research is now required to develop and evaluate the feasibility of using this technology in health-care education. Originality/value: Health-care students, educators and clinicians views on XR haptics have not previously been explored in the development and application of this technology. Our present technological environment has removed a substantial degree of physicality from common functions. This condition had already been investigated around a century ago by Walter Benjamin, who had an ambivalent attitude toward the ‘aura’ associated with outmoded technologies. The Benjaminian discourse, which continues among academics, contains hidden insights into the psychological effect of the increasing loss of tactile experience as mechanical operations are replaced by electronic ones. The evolution of dials and switches is paradigmatic of the technological changes that parallel those in psychosomatic perception. Modern and contemporary works of art have reflected sensitivity to this socio-cultural situation and address it by linking visual experience to tactile experience. Touch plays a crucial role in providing humans with information from the external environment and can be perceived by humans as positively or negatively valenced. It is well documented that touch can differentially influence social functions, but very little is known about how touch can modulate (meta)cognition. Utilizing a within‐subject design, participants were exposed to (a) positive, (b) negative, and (c) no touch, alongside encoding of emotionally valenced (positive and negative) images. After a 20‐minute delay, participants completed a Yes/No recognition task to investigate how touch influenced memory‐related decision components (e.g. criterion, confidence). Results showed that, compared to the control condition, both positive and negative touch were associated with overall lower confidence ratings, a less liberal response bias and slower response times. Interestingly, for correct recognitions, only negative touch (vs. no touch) led to inappropriately lower confidence and slower response times while both confidence and response time remained unaltered in positive touch. Our findings provide the first evidence that positive and negative touch differentially interact with metacognitive memory‐related decisions. Altered metacognitive judgements after being touched could have significant consequences in applied settings, such as situations of eyewitness testimony. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Speech motor skill is refined over the course of practice, which is commonly reflected by increased accuracy and consistency. This research examined the relationship between auditory-perceptual ratings of word accuracy and measures of speech motor timing and variability at pre- and posttreatment in children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Furthermore, the degree to which individual patterns of baseline probe word accuracy, receptive language, and cognition predicted response to treatment was explored. Method: Probe data were collected from seven children with CAS (aged 2;5-5;0 [years;months]) who received 6 weeks of Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) treatment. Using a multidimensional approach to measuring speech performance, auditory-perceptual (whole-word accuracy), acoustic (whole-word duration), and kinematic (jaw movement variability) analyses were conducted on probe words produced pre- and posttreatment. Standardized tests of receptive language and cognition were administered pretreatment. Results: There was a negative relationship between auditory-perceptual measures of word accuracy and movement variability. Higher word accuracy was associated with lower jaw movement variability following intervention. There was a strong relationship between word accuracy and word duration at baseline, which became less robust posttreatment. Furthermore, baseline word accuracy was the only child-specific factor to predict response to DTTC treatment. Conclusions: Following a period of motor-based intervention, children with CAS appeared to refine speech motor control in conjunction with improvements in word accuracy. Those who demonstrated the poorest performance at treatment onset displayed the greatest degree of gains. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the precarious porosity of the human body. Biological vulnerability and the fear of contagion in recent times has prompted the exercise of caution by enforcing distinct demarcating boundaries between the environment, the self, and the other. Thus, the faculty of touch is restricted despite its importance in functional, developmental, haptic, intimate, non-verbal, therapeutic, cultural, and social dimensions. Avenues of direct contact have been barred, with digital and mediated touch dominating various spheres. The lived experience of a population negotiating with the loss of tactile contact finds expression within the subjective narratives of the viral subject detailed insightfully through the medium of comics. Taking instances from graphic medicine, this paper aims to analyse the parameters of touch and tactility during the COVID-19 pandemic by close reading comic panels from various sources. This study in China aimed to explore the impact of maternal depression on infant–mother attachment and whether parenting status moderated this relationship. Women underwent depression assessments at seven perinatal time points: ≤12, 17, 21, 31, and 37 weeks of pregnancy, as well as 1 and 6 weeks postpartum. Those completing at least three times assessments, along with their infants, were invited for infant–mother attachment assessment at 12–18 months postpartum. Among 233 infant–mother pairs completing the infant–mother attachment assessment, 62 and 80 mothers had postnatal depression and perinatal major depression, respectively; 75 (32.2%) of infants exhibited insecure attachment. While infants whose mothers had maternal depression showed a slightly elevated rate of insecure attachment, this difference did not achieve statistical significance. Additionally, parenting status did not influence the relationship between maternal depression and infant–mother attachment. Nevertheless, the study hinted that more physical contact between mother and infant might reduce insecure attachment likelihood. Future research should expand sample sizes and assessment points for better understanding. In addition, encouraging close interaction and physical touch between mother and infant may be beneficial. We frequently interact with textured surfaces with both our feet and hands. Like texture's importance for grasping, texture perception via the foot sole might provide important signals about the stability of a surface, aiding in maintaining balance. However, how textures are perceived by the foot, and especially under the high forces experienced during walking, is unknown. The current study builds on extensive research investigating texture perception at the hand by presenting everyday textures to the foot while stepping onto them, exploring them with the foot while sitting, and exploring them with the hand. Participants rated each texture along three perceptual dimensions: roughness, hardness, and stickiness. Participants also rated how stable their posture felt when standing upon each texture. Results show that perceptual ratings of each textural dimension were highly correlated across conditions. Hardness exhibited the greatest consistency and stickiness the weakest. Moreover, correlations between stepping and exploration with the foot were lower than those between exploration with the foot and exploration with the hand, suggesting that mode of interaction (high vs. low force) impacts perception more than body region used (foot vs. hand). On an individual level, correlations between conditions were higher than those between participants, suggesting that differences are greater between individuals than between mode of interaction or body region. When investigating the relationship to perceived stability, only hardness contributed significantly, with harder surfaces rated as more stable. Overall, tactile perception appears consistent across body regions and interaction modes, although differences in perception are greater during walking. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the outcomes and impact of Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) treatment when clear vinyl masks were worn. DTTC is one of the few evidence-based treatments for children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Given that DTTC relies on visual, auditory, and tactile cues, it was unknown if treatment gains would be demonstrated when masks were worn and how masking would impact the therapy experience for clinicians and caregivers. Method: A sequential mixed methods design was used to study the efficacy of DTTC treatment in children with CAS when clear masks were worn. The quantitative phase used a multiple-baseline across-participants design. Four children (each 4 years of age) participated in the treatment protocol in which 24 sessions of DTTC were provided over 8 weeks while clear vinyl face masks were worn by participants and clinicians. Whole word accuracy on treated items and generalization to easy and hard untreated items were assessed during baseline, treatment, and follow-up. Semistructured interviews were conducted with clinicians and caregivers following treatment to explore the experience of masks being worn during treatment. Qualitative data were analyzed using descriptive thematic analysis. Results: Three children completed the treatment protocol. Visual and statistical analyses revealed that two participants demonstrated significant treatment effects, with one also demonstrating generalization. The remaining participant demonstrated marginal treatment gains. Qualitative findings revealed two main themes: "mask wearing was inconvenient but did not prevent therapy gains" and "in-person therapy with face masks was preferable to teletherapy." Conclusions: Masks did not prohibit treatment gains during DTTC therapy, with treatment effects of varying degrees shown for the three participants who completed the protocol. Together, quantitative and qualitative results indicate that mask wearing was, for most, a minor inconvenience that did not substantially interfere with the efficacy of DTTC treatment. Holding and moving objects to create a sound effect requires a performer to navigate by feel, directing their listening from the solid (dried peas on a drumhead) to the imaginary (sea waves). The illusory properties of sound have long been exploited by sound effects performers for the purposes of Foley, silent cinema and theatre. While sound may provoke the imagination or emotional response of the audience, it also does its affective work on the performer operating the effect. In the moment of practice itself, sound binds to the object being manipulated, blurring the known boundaries of its physical properties. The Foley artist crosses a threshold between the tactility of the material and the dissolved representations of the intangible, as the sound itself feels like it is the material being manipulated. Simple hand actions become a gateway to the imaginary. This article considers the affective experience of creative bodily guided soundmaking, and how the successful operation of a sound effect requires the performer to deliberately navigate between modes of listening, attuning their movements and engaging with a perceptual space where things, while making sound, are no longer what they seem to be. Focusing on sound effects beyond the screen allows for an exploration of the aesthetic, dramatic and syncretic in real-world experiences of sound and movement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rhythm is essential in early music education. To acquire rhythm abilities, the synchronisation between body and rhythm patterns is fundamental. Extensive research has shown the link between the auditory-motor system and rhythm acquisition; however, other sensorimotor systems also improve rhythm skills. Rhythm acquisition can be trained using new technologies, such as video games; however, most of these use mainly auditory stimuli to improve it. Therefore, in this work, we explore tactile stimuli to improve rhythm skills using a video game and how visual elements affect rhythm perception using different stimuli. We evaluate and compare the synchronisation of 27 participants following either vibrotactile or auditory stimuli emitted through a rhythm video game in two difficulty levels and we evaluated the user experience. Consistent with the literature, our results indicate that participants synchronised slightly better using auditory than vibrotactile stimuli and players' performance was better when they had visual guides. A fatigue effect persisted and increased over playtime in both conditions. In the current study, usability measures indicate no significant differences. These findings suggest that vibrotactile stimuli are also suitable to train rhythm skills in a video game environment and the game-elements play an important role in players' performance. Vibrotactile feedback can be built into clothing such as vests. This means that often vibrotactile information is presented to the back. It is known that the back has a relatively low spatial acuity. Spatial acuity varies across different limbs and sometimes with different locations on a limb. These known anisotropies suggest that there might be systematic variations in vibrotactile spatial acuity for different areas of the back and also for different orientations (i.e. horizontal vs. vertical). Here we systematically measured spatial acuity in four areas of the back for both horizontal and vertical orientations. The results show no significant differences in spatial acuity for the back areas that were tested. Spatial acuity was, however, higher in the horizontal direction than in the vertical direction by roughly a factor of two. This means that when designing vibrotactile displays for the back the tactor density can be lower in the vertical direction than in the horizontal direction and density should be constant for different areas of the back. There appears to be no attempt to categorize the specific classes of behavior that the tactile system underpins. Awareness of how an organism uses touch in their environment informs understanding of its versatility in non-verbal communication and tactile perception. This review categorizes the behavioral functions underpinned by the tactile sense, by using three sources of data: (1) Animal data, to assess if an identified function is conserved across species; (2) Human capacity data, indicating whether the tactile sense can support a proposed function; and (3) Human impaired data, documenting the impacts of impaired tactile functioning (e.g., reduced tactile sensitivity) for humans. From these data, three main functions pertinent to the tactile sense were identified: Ingestive Behavior; Environmental Hazard Detection and Management; and Social Communication. Interpersonal touch buffers against stress under challenging conditions, but this effect depends on familiarity. People benefit from receiving touch from their romantic partners, but the results are less consistent in the context of receiving touch from an opposite-gender stranger. We propose that there may be important gender differences in how people respond to touch from opposite-gender strangers. Specifically, we propose that touch from an opposite-gender stranger may only have stress-buffering effects for men, not women. Stress was induced as participants took part in an emotion recognition task in which they received false failure feedback while being touched by a romantic partner or stranger. We measured subjective and physiological markers of stress (i.e., reduced heart rate variability) throughout the experiment. Neither stranger's nor partner's touch had any effect on subjective or physiological markers of stress for men. Women, however, subjectively experienced a stress-buffering effect of partner and stranger touch, but showed increased physiological markers of stress when receiving touch from an opposite-gender stranger. Although consumers are commonly exposed to numerous choices and the opportunity to touch products when they shop, the literature remains unclear on how both factors simultaneously affect choice. With the growth of online shopping, touch literature has studied the effects of mere touch (i.e., nondiagnostic tactile contact) or vicarious touch (e.g., observing a hand in physical contact with a product or imagining touching a product) to demonstrate that these nondiagnostic haptic inputs can comparably influence consumer attitude, just like diagnostic touch. By investigating the moderating effects of different haptic inputs on choice overload, this research reveals certain conditions in which nondiagnostic haptic inputs operate differently than those of diagnostic touch. We find that both mere touch (Study 1) and vicarious touch (Study 2) help reduce choice overload effects by eliminating the effect of choice set size on choice uncertainty, which is typically observed in the no touch (i.e., control) condition. As haptic cues have been increasingly employed to aid the online shopping experience for consumers, we also find that the choice overload effect is eliminated when an autotelic haptic cue is presented but amplified when an instrumental haptic cue is provided (Study 3). Besides, this research demonstrates that, while the moderating effects of the nondiagnostic haptic inputs are driven by increased personal control, instrumental touch can amplify choice overload effects due to the increased choice difficulty when choosing from large (vs. small) choice sets. Is tourism out of touch with touch? Have tourism researchers forgotten 'touch'? Drawing on socio-spatial theories of haptics, I argue that through the sense of touch we critically understand co-constructions of affective tourist subjectivities. Specifically, touch and fear are part of a sensuous hapticality, intimately connected and happening within and around places and bodies – of tourists, local guides and soldiers – in areas of ongoing socio-political conflict. Interviews were undertaken with local tourism stakeholders and international tourists during fieldworks in the Palestinian West Bank in 2010, and 2017–2018. The Separation Wall and its checkpoints have become tourist attractions, pervasive and ever present in the landscape, enticing most tourists in the area to engage haptically in such places. The hands are the most complex organs of the body for performing various activities. Therefore, it is critical to protect them against dangers. Protective gloves can reduce or prevent injuries, but they can downgrade hand performance in various aspects, including tactile sensitivity, strength, grip force and hand dexterity. In this study, eight protective gloves with different designs and materials were made. The study investigated the influence of the number of layers and several characteristics, e.g., mass per square meter, thickness, bending stiffness and compressibility, on the gloved hand performance regarding protection ability, tactile sensitivity, strength capability and manual dexterity. The results indicated that despite the improving effects of increasing layer thickness, weight, bending energy and compressibility on protection ability, the gloves diminish tactile sensitivity, grip and pinch force, and manual dexterity. In 2016 the National Museum in Oslo launched a nationwide touring exhibition that allowed visitors for the first time to touch the sculptures of modernist Aase Texmon Rygh. The aim was to encourage visitors to experience these abstract stone works through the body before engaging with various contextualising practices for a more comprehensive process of meaning-making. Allowing members of the public to touch original sculpture in an exhibition context was new not only for the National Museum but also internationally, and the exhibition generated considerable professional and media attention. In my role as the exhibition's curator, I set out to investigate the interdisciplinary process of developing the exhibition concept and the audience response through a practice-led research project. Drawing on different theoretical perspectives, such as learning theory and interdisciplinary sensory research, and audience surveys which were conducted during the exhibition, I wanted to learn more about how audiences experienced touching the sculptures, and how touch affected their process of meaning making. Changes in the function of inhibitory interneurons (INs) during cortical development could contribute to the pathophysiology of neurodevelopmental disorders. Using all-optical in vivo approaches, we find that parvalbumin (PV) INs and their immature precursors are hypoactive and transiently decoupled from excitatory neurons in postnatal mouse somatosensory cortex (S1) of Fmr1 KO mice, a model of fragile X syndrome (FXS). This leads to a loss of parvalbumin INs (PV-INs) in both mice and humans with FXS. Increasing the activity of future PV-INs in neonatal Fmr1 KO mice restores PV-IN density and ameliorates transcriptional dysregulation in S1, but not circuit dysfunction. Critically, administering an allosteric modulator of Kv3.1 channels after the S1 critical period does rescue circuit dynamics and tactile defensiveness. Symptoms in FXS and related disorders could be mitigated by targeting PV-INs.

Background: Advanced neuromuscular training prepares patients with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) for sport participation. Return-to-sport testing often includes single-leg hop tests, yet combining motor and cognitive tasks (i.e., dual-task) might reveal neurocognitive reliance. Purpose/Hypothesis: This study examined changes in performance on visuomotor reactions tests and single-leg hop tests following advanced neuromuscular training in patients with ACLR. The hypothesis was that performance would improve less on reaction tests than on single-leg hop tests. Study Design: Quasi experimental, Pretest-Posttest Methods: Twenty-five patients with ACLR (11 males) completed 10 sessions of advanced neuromuscular training and pre-and post-training testing. Reaction tests outcomes were from a platform and visual display. The double-leg reaction test involved touching target dots with either leg for 20 seconds; correct touches and errors were recorded. The single-leg reaction test involved hopping on the test leg to 10 target dots; hop time and errors were recorded. Single-leg hop tests included forward, triple, crossover triple, and timed hop; limb symmetry index was recorded. Effect sizes were calculated for corrected touches on the double-leg reaction test, surgical side hop time on the single-leg reaction test, and surgical side hop distance or time on single-leg hop tests. Results: Correct touches on the double-leg reaction test significantly increased from pre- to post-training (20.4 +/- 4.3 vs. 23.9 +/- 2.8, p<0.001). Hop time on the single-leg reaction test significantly decreased from pre- to post-training (Surgical leg 13.2 vs. 12.3 seconds, non-surgical leg 13.0 vs. 12.1 seconds, p=0.003). Mean errors did not significantly change on either reaction test (p> 0.05). Cohens d effect sizes in descending order was single-leg hop tests (d=0.9 to 1.3), double-leg reaction test (d=0.9), and single-leg reaction test (d=0.5). Conclusion: Motor performance improved after advanced neuromuscular training, but the effect size was less on visuomotor reaction tests than single-leg hop tests. Background: This study was motivated by the need to enhance Mandarin learning through embodied interactions and physical engagement methods. While most studies confirm the positive effects of touchscreen devices on learning, mixed findings suggest a need for more engaging methods. This research addresses these gaps by exploring the benefits of embodied interaction through the Shaking‐On game app, an embodied question‐response platform, in comparison to Kahoot. Objectives: To compare the learning effectiveness of the Shaking‐On app, which incorporates physical shaking interactions, with the conventional quiz platform Kahoot in promoting Mandarin learning and positive emotional experiences. Methods: A total of 158 junior high school students participated in the study, engaging in 15‐minute sessions once a week for 3 weeks in a formal classroom setting. Participants were divided into two groups: one using the Shaking‐On app and the other using Kahoot. The study employed a comparative analysis framework based on achievement emotion theory to evaluate learning outcomes and emotional responses. Furthermore, the classroom response system (CRS) analysis was used to assess the cognitive and affective parameters of the learning tasks in the Shaking‐On app and Kahoot, providing detailed insight into how different interactive tasks contributed to learning. Results and Conclusions: The results indicated that the Shaking‐On app significantly enhanced Mandarin learning and engagement compared with Kahoot. Participants using Shaking‐On experienced higher levels of interactive situational interest and flow, while test anxiety remained consistent across both groups. These findings suggest that incorporating embodied interactions into digital learning tools can substantially benefit student engagement and learning outcomes. The study indicated that such apps could be effectively integrated into classroom settings to enhance student learning. Educators and game developers are encouraged to integrate such interactive elements to improve the efficacy and appeal of educational applications. Nowadays, artificial intelligence is used in many fields to diagnose and treat different diseases. Robots are also useful tools that substitute for human work. Despite robots being used also for touch therapy, can they substitute for the human touch? Human touch has a strong social component, and it is necessary for the correct development of newborns and the treatment of pathological situations. To substitute human touch, it is necessary to integrate robots with artificial intelligence as well as with sensors that mimic human skin. Today, the question remains without answer: Can human touch be substituted with AI in its social and affiliative components?

Background: Fever is a very common presenting complaint in children and is of great diagnostic importance. The presence of fever in a child which is often determined by tactile assessment is a major source of concern to caregivers necessitating either the use of medications and /or hospital visitation. Objective: To test the reliability of tactile assessment of fever by mothers and to ascertain if palpation of a single site or multiple sites affects the accuracy. Method: The study was conducted at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City between July and September 2009 and involved 359 children aged six months to five years. Each child had a tactile assessment of fever by the mother after which the patient's axillary temperature was measured and documented. Results: One hundred and forty-five mothers (40.4%) palpated multiple sites while 214 mothers (59.6%) palpated a single site.Of those that palpated a single site, the head was the most frequently used site (31%) while the groin was the least used site (0.5%). The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of mother's perception of fever using a single site were 89.2%, 64.3%, 56.9% and 91.8% respectively while for mothers who used multiple sites were 89.4%, 55.7%, 62.8% and 86.3% respectively. No significant difference was found when the values were compared. Conclusion: Tactile assessment is still a relevant tool in the determination of the presence of fever in children. The use of one or more anatomical sites does not affect its accuracy.

Touch is an essential form of non-verbal communication. While language and its neural basis are widely studied, tactile communication is less well understood. We used fMRI and multivariate pattern analyses in pairs of emotionally close adults to examine the neural basis of human-to-human tactile communication. In each pair, a participant was designated either as sender or as receiver. The sender was instructed to communicate specific messages by touching only the arm of the receiver, who was inside the scanner. The receiver then identified the message based on the touch expression alone. We designed two multivariate decoder algorithms—one based on the sender's intent (sender-decoder), and another based on the receiver's response (receiver-decoder). We identified several brain areas that significantly predicted behavioural accuracy of the receiver. Regarding our a priori region of interest, the receiver's primary somatosensory cortex (S1), both decoders were able to accurately differentiate the messages based on neural activity patterns here. The receiver-decoder, which relied on the receivers' interpretations of the touch expressions, outperformed the sender-decoder, which relied on the sender's intent. Our results identified a network of brain areas involved in human-to-human tactile communication and supported the notion of non-sensory factors being represented in S1. Emotional experiences are driven, in part, by the way we process and integrate information from different sensory modalities. Understanding how perceptual and emotional systems interact to give rise to subjective feelings is an important, complex and challenging issue, requiring new approaches and integrative thinking that fuses the fundamentals of low-level sensory perception with higher-level cognitive and affective processes. The Theme Issue 'Sensing and feeling: an integrative approach to sensory processing and emotional experience' showcases fifteen theoretical, empirical, and review articles from experts working at the intersection of perception and emotion, encompassing multiple sensory systems (visual, auditory, tactile and interoceptive), clinical and non-clinical perspectives (e.g. affective disorders and hearing loss), contextual and social perspectives, and complex emotional experiences in special populations. Articles in Part 1 emphasize recent advances across fields in sensory and emotion science and give insights into future directions. Each article in Part 2 provides more detailed and specific methodological approaches or theoretical models, and focuses on basic mechanisms linking sensation to emotional experience. Background: Children with visual impairment and additional disabilities (VIAD) have difficulty accessing the visual information related to their parents' facial expressions and gestures. Similarly, it may be hard for parents to detect their children's subtle expressions. These challenges in accessibility may compromise emotional availability (EA) in parent--child interactions. The systematic use of the bodily-tactile modality for expressive and receptive communicative functions may function as a strategy to compensate for a child's lack of vision. This multiple-case study explored the effects of a bodily-tactile early intervention for three mothers and their one-year-old children with VIAD. Methods: Video data from baseline, intervention, and follow-up sessions were analyzed using a bodily-tactile coding procedure and EA Scales. Results: During the intervention, all mothers began to use a more bodily-tactile modality in early play routines and in different communicative functions. They increased their use of anticipatory cues, noticing responses, and tactile signs. Moreover, the children were more emotionally available to their mothers during the intervention and follow-up compared to the baseline. Conclusion: The results indicated that, during a short intervention, mothers could adopt a systematic use of the bodily-tactile modality in interactions with their children with VIAD. Our mental representation of our body depends on integrating various sensory modalities, such as tactile information. In tactile distance estimation (TDE) tasks, participants must estimate the distance between two tactile tips applied to their skin. This measure of tactile perception has been linked to body representation assessments. Studies in individuals with fibromyalgia (FM), a chronic widespread pain syndrome, suggest the presence of body representation distortions and tactile alterations, but TDE has never been examined in this population. Twenty participants with FM and 24 pain-free controls performed a TDE task on three Body regions (upper limb, trunk, lower limb), in which they manually estimated the interstimuli distance on a tablet. TDE error, the absolute difference between the estimation and the interstimuli distance, was not different between the Groups, on any Body region. Drawings of their body as they felt it revealed clear and frequent distortions of body representation in the group with FM, compared to negligible perturbations in controls. This contrast between distorted body drawings and unaltered TDE suggests a preserved integration of tactile information but an altered integration of this information with other sensory modalities to generate a precise and accurate body representation. Future research should investigate the relative contribution of each sensory information and prior knowledge about the body in body representation in individuals with FM to shed light on the observed distortions. Audrey Holland's core beliefs of respect for people and the quality of their lives informed her life's work. This examination of the ways she managed the academic, research, and clinical parts of her illustrious career shows how Audrey leaves a rich legacy and serves as a model for navigating an impactful career path and enhancing clinical interactions. First, she mentored more than 30 doctoral students who then mentored further generations of students, ran clinics, or shaped policy. She also regularly taught classes, supervised student clinicians, and traveled the world doing lectures and workshops. Second, her scholarship spanned more than 50 years and a range of subjects, such as assessment and treatment, self-determination and self-advocacy, pragmatics, counseling, coaching, and communication strategies. Third, her collaborations with many colleagues within the field and in related fields extended her impact even further. Finally, a close analysis of her clinical communication style shows how Audrey's simple, nonverbal behaviors (e.g., eye contact, body position) brought out the best in the people with whom she worked. On all these levels—mentorship, scholarship, collaboration, and communication style—Audrey's legacy leaves a vast array of powerful lessons that can be studied, emulated, and appreciated for years to come. The enforcement of social distancing measures and lockdowns across the globe to control the spread of Covid-19 has led to various forms of tactile deprivation. While social interactions became less accessible for some groups of people, this deprivation brought a re-emphasis of the importance of social touch. The label affective haptic devices (AHDs) has been used to address a plethora of digital media promptly assembled to help people to compensate for their lack of affective touch. By simulating the experience of touch through digital devices, we witness a potential re-negotiation of the human/non-human divide and a productive means to challenge the boundaries of human skin. Our contribution – organized in the sections (i) Tactile deprivation; (ii) Replacing social touch; (iii) Towards a feminist understanding of extended touch – then aims to investigate the cyborg dimension of extended touch for raising further questions on the role of touch in defining the human being. In the typically developing population, social touch experiences are influenced by several factors, including the biological sex of toucher and receiver, the body area wherein the touch is delivered and the social context in which the tactile exchange occurs. However, it is currently unexplored how social touch experiences of autistic adults are modulated by these factors. We sought to address this by utilizing a self-report body-painting task. Our main results show that autistic, compared with non-autistic, adults reported lower levels of pleasantness, erogeneity and appropriateness, specifically in intimate and friendly social contexts and in body areas typically touched in these situations. Importantly, sex played a major role in group differences. For instance, although autistic females reported, across social contexts, less pleasantness than both non-autistic females and autistic males, they experienced similar levels of appropriateness in the professional social context, usually deemed as touch-appropriate. Our findings provide new support to the hypothesis that social touch is experienced and possibly conceptualized differently by autistic compared with non-autistic adults. Moreover, by identifying the factors that influence social touch processing in autistic adults, our results might aid the development of support for autistic individuals seeking help in the spheres of social and intimate touch. What is already known about the topic? At least in neurotypical individuals, social touch represents an important channel for emotional communication associated with social bonding and pain/anxiety modulation. Autistic adults report to avoid social touch more and to have different tactile sensitivity than their non-autistic comparisons. What this paper adds? Few studies specifically investigated social touch in autistic individuals, and none of them examined the role of participants' sex, social context in which social touch occurs, and specific body areas being touched. In our study, adult participants reported how pleasant, erogenous and appropriate they would consider touches delivered by another person over their entire body in intimate (date), friendly (dance class) and professional (physiotherapy-massage session) social contexts. Autistic adults reported social touch to be less pleasant, erogenous and appropriate specifically in intimate and friendly social contexts and in body areas typically touched in these situations. Importantly, autistic females seem more at risk to experience unpleasant social touch as, although they considered it more unpleasant than non-autistic females and autistic males, they did consider it similarly appropriate in professional social contexts where touch is normed to be socially appropriate. Implications for practice, research or policy Our results might improve awareness and understanding about autistic adults' different, and often more discomforting, experience of social touch and thus help consider and respect it during everyday social interactions. Our results might also benefit future research investigating, for instance, the neural underpinnings of social touch differences in autism or aiming at developing support for autistic individuals seeking help in the diverse spheres of social touch.
