Rising healthcare expenditures call for new ways of working smarter in hospitals to achieve their target performance with the same budget and staffing levels. Integral Capacity Management (ICM) is an approach developed in the Netherlands that helps hospitals achieve their desired performance. It matches patient demand with resource capacity by managing variability without increasing costs. With the question in mind of whether this approach could be implemented in Norway, this report analyses the main differences between the Dutch and Norwegian healthcare systems and identifies drives and barriers for the implementation of ICM in Norwegian hospitals. Overall, the success of implementing ICM in Norway could be less than in the Netherlands due to the mentioned differences between the healthcare systems. However, there is still great potential for improving the current way of planning in Norwegian hospitals, and we believe ICM can highly contribute to this improvement.

In order to improve health care processes (both in terms of quality and efficiency), we do need insight into how these processes are actually executed in reality. Interviewing health personnel and observing them in their work, are proven field-work techniques for gaining this insight. In this paper, we will introduce a complementary technique. This technique, called process mining, is based on the automatic analysis of digital events, registered in different information systems that support clinical work. Based on an event log, process mining can help in constructing a model of the process (discovery) or with checking to which extend an actual process confirms to a prescriptive model of it (conformance). Information quality has been proposed as one of the determining factors for perceived information system success. Fehrenbacher and Helfert have studied contextual factors of information system use (e.g. different user types, types of business activities supported, etc.) that influence the perceived importance and the trade-offs of information quality criteria. In this paper we will use their framework in a discussion of the findings from a study we conducted on the implementation of an electronic messaging system (emessaging) in Norwegian healthcare aimed at supporting collaboration between different health care actors. The system has a high perceived success even though the information quality of the message content offers room for improvement according to health personnel using the system. In this paper we present a longitudinal perspective of exchange of information providers in hospital and home health care. More specifically we address how this practice has changed over the last six years. In three different studies we have investigated how the information exchange between hospital and home health care throughout a patient transition from admission to discharge has changed over the last six years. The information processes have gone from being mainly paper-based to being digitalized. However, there are still professional challenges to overcome which may contribute to improvements for patients in transition. © IOS Press. The recent development of mobile technologies allows nurses to receive different types of requests anywhere. However, the interruptions generated by these devices often presents a challenge for nurses in their daily work in a hospital department. In previous inquires we have investigated nurses' strategies to managing technology-mediated interruptions in the form of nurse calls. This study reports on an effort to co-design a system that supports an important strategy employed by nurses. Through the involvement of domain experts, the study elicits requirements for an awareness system to support nurses’ collaborative effort in handling nurse calls. © 2015 IMIA and IOS Press. This chapter introduces contextualization of events as means to improve decision support systems in clinical environments. Modern hospitals are full of technology producing electronic records of events and activities, each meaningful in their specific context. This creates the opportunity to culminate these events into a wealth of information that we can tap into to take better informed decisions and facilitate coordination. By means of a problem frame analysis of a use case in a hospital setting, we motivate the importance of event contextualization. This discussion paper considers examples of informal communication among multidisciplinary medical teams in the context of their weekly meeting. Informal exchanges are frequent, particularly at the beginnings and endings of meetings, are often private (1-2-1). This opportunity for synchronous face-to-face informal exchange is highly valued and reported to be a strong motivator for attendance at MDT meetings. The exchanges are both task and non-task related and tend to be conversational. We suggest that the informal communication we observe plays an important role in helping team cohesiveness

Large wall-mounted screens placed at locations where health personnel pass by will assist in self-coordination and improve utilisation of both resources and staff at hospitals. The sensitivity level of the information visible on these screens must be adapted to a close-to-public setting, as passers-by may not have the right or need to know anything about patients being treated. We have conducted six informal interviews with health personnel in order to map what kind of information they use when identifying their patients and their next tasks. We have compared their practice and needs to legislative requirements and conclude that it is difficult, if not impossible, to fulfil all requirements from all parties. © 2011 European Federation for Medical Informatics.
