Objective: to explore attitudes towards patients' self-reported data about foot health-related beliefs from a behavioural and attitudinal perspective. They all explained 62.78% of the variance, and were considered as independent variables in a regression analysis to determine which provided the best explanations for the importance attributed to foot health. Objetivos: Cuantificar los grados de movimiento que se producen en el miembro inferior mediante un sistema cinemático y a través de radiografías, tras realizar dos mediciones de 45º y 60º de extensión en la primera articulación metatarsofalángica (1ªAMTF), con el sujeto en bipedestación, respetando ángulo y base de sustentación. Así mismo, determinar el grado de repercusión provocado por la activación del mecanismo de windlass en el miembro inferior y relacionar ambos sistemas de medición. Metodología: Estudio cuasiexperimental prueba – post-prueba con un solo grupo de intervención. La muestra estuvo constituida por 25 sujetos, cuyos criterios de inclusión fueron; sujetos ≥19 años; 0-5º valgos en posición relajada de calcáneo en apoyo, 0- +5 en foot posture index; posición neutra del eje de la articulación subastragalina y un mínimo de 60º de extensión de la 1ªAMTF. Se cuantificó la extensión de la 1ªAMTF y los movimientos producidos en mediopié, tibia y fémur mediante el sistema cinemático. Y se realizaron tres radiografías en proyección lateral, una de ellas en posición relajada y las otras dos con una extensión pasiva de la 1ªAMTF de 45º y de 60º. Se compararon los cambios producidos en los ángulos Costa-Bartani-Moreau interno; astrágalo – 1º metatarsiano; metatarsofalángico del 1º dedo; inclinación del 1º metatarsiano; inclinación del calcáneo; longitud del pie completo; longitud del pie sin los dedos; altura del escafoides; altura del escafoides normalizada y truncada. Resultados: Con el sistema cinemático se produjo un aumento del rango de movimiento en cada una de las variables con un valor p<0,05. En las mediciones radiográficas se obtuvieron diferencias estadísticamente significativas en todas las variables. Se determinó la magnitud de la diferencia entre 45º y 60º mediante la valoración del tamaño del efecto, obteniéndose en tibia un tamaño del efecto alto (0,842) y en fémur un tamaño del efecto medio (0,686). [Abstract] Background: The aim of this study was to explore students' perceptions of the educational environment (EE) in a Spanish school of podiatry. Various aspects of EE were compared by academic year in the program. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study using a questionnaire to collect perceptions using data from a 2015 survey. Podiatric medical students from Extremadura University participated in this study. EE was assessed with the Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) tool.The DREEM questionnaire covers five domains of student perceptions, including learning, teachers, academic self-perceptions, atmosphere, and social self-perceptions. Results: Two hundred thirty-five students participated, resulting in a 90.73% response rate. Participants included similar numbers of students from different years in the program, and most were women. The global EE score was 2.58 out of 4, indicating that students' perceptions were more positive than negative. Although some weaknesses were detected in this school, students viewed the EE positively in all five DREEM domains. Academic year in the program were generally not related to perceptions of EE. Conclusions: Podiatric medical students declared, in general, that the EE was more positive than negative in our school, according to the DREEM questionnaire. However, although the results are on the whole good, some areas need to be revised to make improvements.

Accordingly, our aim here was to determine the relationship between foot health and quality of life and general health among male and female university students. DESIGN AND SETTING: Observational cross-sectional quantitative study conducted at the Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Clinic of the University of Coruña, Ferrol, Spain. METHODS: A sample of 112 participants of median age 22 years came to a health center, where self-reported data were registered, including professional activity, and scores obtained through the Foot Health Status Questionnaire (FHSQ) were compared. RESULTS: In Section One of the FHSQ, the university students recorded lower scores of 66.66 in the footwear domain and 60 in the general foot health domain and higher scores of 84.37 in the foot pain domain and 93.75 in the foot function domain. In Section Two, they obtained lower scores of 60 in the overall health domain and 62.50 in the vigor domain and higher scores of 100 in the physical activity and 87.50 in the social capacity domain. Differences between males and females were evaluated using the Wilcoxon rank-sum test, which showing statistical significance (P < 0.05) regarding the dimensions of footwear and general foot health. CONCLUSIONS: These university students’ quality of life relating to foot health was poor. This appears to be associated with the university period, regardless of gender.

BACKGROUND: Metatarsalgia can be considered to be a common complaint in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to compare quality of life (QoL) between participants with different metatarsalgia types and matched-paired healthy controls. DESIGN AND SETTING: A cross-sectional analysis on a sample of 124 participants of median age ± interquartile range of 55 ± 22 years was carried out in the University Clinic of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery, Ferrol, Spain. They presented primary (n = 31), secondary (n = 31) or iatrogenic (n = 31) metatarsalgia, or were matched-paired healthy controls (n = 31). METHODS: Self-reported domain scores were obtained using the Foot Health Status Questionnaire (FHSQ) and were compared between the participants with metatarsalgia and between these and the healthy controls. RESULTS: Statistically significant differences were shown in all FHSQ domains (P ≤ 0.001). Post-hoc analyses showed statistically significant differences (P < 0.05) between the metatarsalgia types in relation to the matched healthy control group, such that the participants with metatarsalgia presented impaired foot-specific and general health-related QoL (lower FHSQ scores). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that presence of metatarsalgia had a negative impact on foot health-related QoL. Foot-specific health and general health were poorer among patients with metatarsalgia, especially among those with secondary and iatrogenic metatarsalgia, in comparison with matched healthy controls.

Objetivo: Realizar una revisión bibliográfica para identificar los Programas de salud de Podología basados en el cuidado de la salud de los pies en otros países y los programas o actividades similares desarrolladas en España. Método: Revisión bibliográfica en diferentes bases de datos (Pubmed, Scopus, CINAHL, SportDiscus y Goggle Académico), con diferentes descriptores MESH relacionados con el tema. Se incluyen artículos que tienen una relación directa con el desarrollo de Programas de Salud Podológica en diferentes países. Como primera línea se han seleccionado artículos que trataban específicamente de la implantación de guías, protocolos o programas de salud dirigidos específicamente por Podología; incluyéndose artículos sin limitar fecha de publicación en algunas bases de datos específicas, para elaborar un recorrido histórico por el campo de actuación de la Podología en diferentes épocas. Se excluyeron los artículos que no se relacionaban con el pie o con el miembro inferior; se incluyeron los artículos que tienen una relación directa con el desarrollo de Programas de Salud Podológica en diferentes países. Resultados: Se identificaron un total de 128 referencias. Se seleccionaron 74 y finalmente 19 estudios fueron los incluidos en el estudio, 16 internacionales y 9 nacionales. Conclusión: Existen escasez de investigaciones sobre Podología y Promoción de la Salud, hecho que nos llama la atención, pues la implementación de Programas de Salud Podológica tiene un impacto positivo en la salud de los pies de las personas y contribuyen a la prevención de alteraciones podológicas y ayudan a reducir la incidencia de complicaciones., Objective: Conduct a literature review to identify health programs based podiatry care foot health in other countries and programs or similar activities in Spain. Items that were not related to the foot or lower limb were excluded; items that have a direct relationship with the development of Podiatric Health Programs in different countries were included. Results: A total of 128 references were identified. 74 were selected and finally 19 studies were included in the study, 16 international and 9 national. Conclusion: There dearth of research on podiatry and health promotion. This fact calls our attention, because implementation of Podiatric Health Programs has a positive impact on the health of the feet of people and contribute to the prevention of podiatric disorders and help reduce the incidence of complications.

Background: The windlass mechanism was described as the effect caused by the extension of the first metatarsalphalangeal joint (1st MTPJ). Quantify the degrees of movement produced in the leg by means of the Bioval sensor system, after performing two measurements in the 1st MTPJ, 45 extension and maximum extension. Methods: Tests-post-test study with just one intervention group, performed in the Clinical Podiatry Area of the Faculty of Nursing, Physiotherapy and Podiatry of the University of Seville. Subjects were included as of age 20, with a value from 0 to 3 valgus, Helbing line, a value from 0 to +5 for the foot postural index, and a localisation axis for the normalised subtalar joint. Subjects with surgical operations of the first ray, fractures and surgical operations in the leg, pathologies in the first ray and rheumatic diseases were excluded. Measurement was performed with the Bioval system by means of inserting four sensors in the bone structures involved in the windlass mechanism. Results: With the 45 wedge we observed a direct correlation among the variables extension–plantar flexion 1st MTPJ and rotation of the femur. With maximal extension of the 1st MTPJ we obtained a direct relationship between the variable extension of the 1st MTPJ and the variables plantar flexion and prono-supination of the 1st metatarsal as well as with the variables tibia rotation and femur rotation. Conclusion: Kinematic analysis suggested that the higher the degree of extension the more movement will be generated. This reduces the level of impact the more distal the structure with respect to the 1st MTPJ, which has an impact on the entire leg. Because of the kinematic system used wasn’t suitable, its impact wasn’t exactly quantified.

[Resumen] Objetivo: explorar las actitudes relacionadas con datos autoinformados sobre las creencias de la salud del pie desde una perspectiva actitudinal. Método: una muestra de 282 participantes edad media 39.46 ± 16.026 acudieron a un centro de salud donde se registraron datos autoinformados de las características demográficas, características clínicas y creencias relacionadas con la salud del pie, completándose todas las etapas del proceso de investigación. Resultados: los resultados del análisis revelaron una estructura factorial de 8 factores basado en (1) conductas podológicas, (2) la intención de llevar a cabo una conducta de protección, (3) las creencias actitudinales, (4) las creencias normativas, (5) las necesidades, (6) la apatía, (7) el autocuidado, y (8) la percepción general de salud podal. Todos ellos explicaron un 62,78% de la varianza, y fueron considerados como variables independientes en una ecuación de regresión para determinar cuáles de ellos explicaban mejor la importancia atribuida a la salud del pie. Objetivos: Determinar los conocimientos y las actitudes en materia de salud podológica en escolares de 5º y 6º de Educación Primaria de la ciudad de Sevilla, antes y después de implementar una actividad de Educación para la Salud. Métodos: Estudio cuasi experimental antes-después sin grupo control. Se han recogido datos sobre la opinión de los escolares sobre la actividad recibida, preferencias sobre los métodos educativos y se han analizado las diferencias en las respuestas por sexo, centro y nivel educativo. Para cumplir los objetivos planteados se diseñaron y validaron dos cuestionarios, uno “Pre-charla”, rellenado por los escolares antes de la charla coloquio sobre el cuidado de los pies, y otro “Post-charla” cumplimentado inmediatamente después de la actividad educativa. Resultados: La muestra está compuesta por 409 escolares, 230 hombres y 179 mujeres. Por nivel educativo, 190 de 5º curso y 219 de 6º curso de Educación Primaria. Por centro educativo, 249 escolares de colegio público y 160 de Colegio privado-concertado. Entre los resultados principales, previamente a la actividad educativa había una relación directa entre acudir al podólogo con tener información sobre el cuidado de los pies (p0,05). Después de la actividad educativa, el 98,8% de los escolares conoce la figura y funciones del Podólogo y aumenta la tendencia de visita al podólogo que se realizará en mayor medida después de la intervención que antes, pasando del 20% al 97,1%. En cuanto al aprendizaje, casi el 50% de los escolares consideran que han aprendido mucho con la charla sobre el cuidado de los pies. Conclusiones: El cambio observado en los conocimientos y actitudes tras la intervención educativa justifica la importancia de realizar actividades de Educación para la Salud como estrategia educativa sobre los cuidados del pie dentro del Programa de Salud Escolar Podológica., Objectives: To determine the knowledge and attitudes regarding health podiatric school in grades 5 and 6 of primary education in the city of Seville, before and after implementing a Health Education activity. Methods: A quasi-experimental before-after study without a control group was designed. Data on the opinion of the schoolchildren about the activity received preferences on educational methods were collected, and the differences in responses by gender, health and education were analyzed. To meet the objectives two questionnaires, one "Pre-chat", completed by the school before the talk on the foot care and other "Post-talk" immediately filled after the educational activity, were designed and validated. Results: The sample consists of 409 students, 230 men and 179 women. By educational level, 190 and 219, 5th year and 6th year of primary education, respectively. Per school, 249 students of 160 public school and private-entered school. Among the main results, prior to the educational activity it had a direct relationship between going to a Podiatrist with having information about foot care (ph 0,05). After the educational activity, 98.8% of schoolchildren knew the shape and functions of Podiatrist and increased the tendency to visit a Podiatrist to be held to a greater extent after the intervention than before, from 20% to 97.1 %. In terms of learning, almost 50% of the students believed they have learned a lot about foot care. Conclusions: The observed change in knowledge and attitudes following the intervention justifies the importance of activities of Health Education as an educational strategy for foot care within Podiatric School Health Program

We believe that the health of the feet must continually be encouraged, for it has implemented a program of Podiatric School Health, which has continuously maintained over the last 20 years. This program has been carried out in the city of Seville, with the aim of preventing and promote child health. To achieve these goals two stages are marked. The first is to early detection of podiatric pathologies, describe the level of podiatric health, meet the most frequent alterations in the feet of schoolchildren 3-15 years and identify possible risk factors through a podiatric exploration which is done to each school. In the second stage, activities of Health Education develop. Throughout this work strategies and methods are identified, and what were some of the concepts and guidelines related to health promotion and work in the community, who have inspired us and given the scientific support. During the period 2004-2016 have been explored, in schools, a total of 4970 schoolchildren. For diagnostic confirmation and application of treatment have been treated in the Podiatric Clinical Area at the University of Seville, 766 schoolchildren. Activities of health education on foot care have attended a total of 7705 people. We believe that to meet the new and growing demands on health care by the society, they should be implemented more preventive activities and encourage adaptation to new care podiatry under Community status (Podiatry Community).

[Resumen]El presente trabajo recoge los frutos de un conjunto de lecturas realizadas para fundamentar los contenidos teóricos de la docencia universitaria, que tienen como denominador común el hecho de abordar diversos aspectos relativos a la implantación de modo oficial de los estudios de la titulación de Podología en España, desde que se tiene constancia por los primeros documentos oficiales disponibles, que datan del siglo XIX, hasta la actualidad.Las perspectivas de análisis de este estudio son básicamente dos. De un lado, se ha pretendido profundizar en los aspectos más representativos de la legislación que a lo largo del tiempo ha regulado los estudios de Podología. La otra perspectiva de este análisis es la de identificar cuáles han sido los acontecimientos que han ocurrido y las medidas adoptadas que han permitido llegar al actual Grado en Podología. On the one hand, it has sought to deepen the most representative aspects of the legislation over time has regulated studies Podiatry. The other perspective of this analysis is to identify what were the events that have occurred and the measures that have allowed reaching the current Degree in Podiatry. [Resumen] Objetivos: Conocer el perfil epidemiológico de los pacientes de una clínica de podología, y a su vez valorar correlaciones y variables asociadas a la aparición de patologías para establecer resultados que permitan discutir la literatura científica y establecer una población diana para mejorar tanto la prevención como el tratamiento de los problemas más frecuentes del pie.Metodología: Análisis cuantitativo de las historias clínicas de los Pacientes de una Clínica Podológica de la provincia de A Coruña. Estudio no experimental descriptivo con análisis retrospectivo de una muestra representativa de la población con un intervalo de confianza del 95% (p≤0.05) y una precisión de ±6%.Resultados: 236 historias clínicas han sido seleccionadas aleatoriamente. El tipo de paciente más presente son las mujeres de mediana edad y el principal motivo de consulta ha sido padecer dolor en los pies (81.36%). Se ha obtenido una alta prevalencia de afectaciones queratopáticas en el pie (74.6%), así como de onicopatías (55.1%).Conclusiones: El sexo femenino y la edad avanzada son las variables que han demostrado una potente asociación estadística con la aparición de afecciones podológicas. La población diana en la que centrar una acción preventiva en cuanto a las afecciones del pie, sería la población escolar. Llevando a cabo una concienciación del uso de un calzado adecuado para el pie del usuario, la actividad a realizar y a la superficie donde esta se realiza; especialmente en la población adolescente femenina, que es la que comienza a desarrollar el uso de calzado inadecuado, [Abstract] Objectives: To determine the epidemiological profile of patients in a podiatric clinic, and in turn assess correlations and variables associated with the occurrence of diseases to establish results that will discuss the scientific literature and set a target population to improve both prevention and treatment of the most common foot problems.Material and Method: Quantitative and qualitative analysis of the variables in medical records of patients in a Podiatric Clinic of La Coruña Province. Non-experimental, descriptive study with retrospective analysis of a representative sample of the population with a confidence interval of 95% (p≤0,05) and an accuracy of ±6%.Results: 236 medical records were selected randomly. The more representative type of patient are middle-aged women and the most common motive for coming to the clinic has been suffering from pain in the feet (81.36 %) a high prevalence of keratopathies affections of the foot was found( 74.6 % ), as well as nail affections (55.1%).Conclusions: Being female and elderly age are the variables that have demonstrated a strong statistical association with the appearance of podiatric conditions. The target population to focus on preventive action as to the conditions of the foot, would be the school population. Conducting an awareness program of the use of appropriate footwear for the wearer's foot, the activity performed and the surface where this is done; especially in the female adolescent population, which is starting to develop the use of inappropriate footwear
