For any causal nonlinear electrodynamics theory that is "self-dual" (electromagnetic $U(1)$-duality invariant), the Legendre-dual pair of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian densities $\{\mathcal{L},\mathcal{H}\}$ are constructed from functions $\{\ell,h\}$ on ${\bf R}^+$ related to a particle-mechanics Lagrangian and Hamiltonian. We show how a `duality' relating $\ell$ to $h$ implies that $\mathcal{L}$ and $\mathcal{H}$ are related by a simple map between appropriate pairs of variables. We also discuss Born's "Legendre self-duality" and implications of a new "$\Phi$-parity" duality. Our results are illustrated with many examples., Comment: 43 pages

For the general theory of nonlinear electrodynamics (NLED), we prove that causality implies both the Dominant Energy Condition (DEC) and, surprisingly, the Strong Energy Condition (SEC). This has implications for gravitational applications, such as regular black holes supported by NLED matter. For self-dual NLED theories, weak-field causality alone implies both the DEC and SEC, as we illustrate with Born-Infeld and ModMax electrodynamics., Comment: 14 pages

Many theories of nonlinear electrodynamics (NLED) that have been proposed in physical contexts involving strong fields are causal for weak fields but acausal for strong fields. We show that for any such theory there is a unique causal and self-dual (electromagnetic duality invariant) theory with the same Lagrangian at zero magnetic field. This follows from a construction of the general causal self-dual NLED, which shows that strong-field causality is implied by weak-field causality for self-dual theories. Born's original 1933 theory of nonlinear electrodynamics (in contrast to the later Born-Infeld theory) is acausal for strong fields. We explore the issue of strong-field causality violation in families of theories containing Born and/or Born-Infeld, and many variants that have been previously proposed in contexts that include cosmology and black hole physics. Using Hamiltonian methods, we find six relativistic theories of nonlinear electrodynamics for which plane wave perturbations about a constant uniform background are not birefringent. All have the same conformal strong-field limit to Bialynicki-Birula (BB) electrodynamics, but only four avoid superluminal propagation: Born-Infeld (BI), its non-conformal ``extreme'' limits (electric and magnetic) and the conformal BB limit. The quadratic dispersion relation of BI is shown to degenerate in the extreme limits to a pair of linear relations, which become identical in the BB limit., Comment: 39 pages. The Hamiltonian formulation for nonlinear chiral 2-form electrodynamics in six-dimensional Minkowski spacetime is used to show that small-amplitude plane-wave perturbations of a generic uniform constant `magnetic' background exhibit trirefringence: all three independent wave-polarisations have distinct dispersion relations. While two coincide for Lorentz invariant theories, all three coincide uniquely for the chiral 2-form theory on the worldvolume of the M5-brane of M-theory. We argue that this is because, in this M-theory context, the waves propagate in a planar M5-M2-M2 bound-state preserving 16 supersymmetries. All solutions of the no-birefringence conditions for nonlinear electrodynamics are found. In addition to the known Born-Infeld and Plebanski cases, we find a ``reverse Born-Infeld'' case, which has a limit to Plebanski, and an ``extreme-Born-Infeld'' case, which arises as a Lagrangian constraint. Only Born-Infeld has a weak-field limit, and only Born-Infeld and extreme-Born Infeld avoid superluminal propagation in constant electromagnetic backgrounds, but all cases have a conformal strong-field limit that coincides with the strong-field limit of Born-Infeld found by Bialynicki-Birula., Comment: 25 pages. In the Hamiltonian formulation of chiral 2k-form electrodynamics, the 2k-form potential on the (4k+1)-space is defined up to the addition of either (i) a closed $2k$-form or (ii) an exact 2k-form, depending on the choice of chirality constraint. Case (i) is realized by the Floreanini-Jackiw 2D chiral boson (for k=0) and its Henneaux-Teitelboim generalisation to k>0. The 19th century Aether died with Special Relativity but was resurrected by General Relativity in the form of dark energy; a tensile material with tension equal to its energy density. Such a material is provided by the D-branes of string-theory; these can support the fields of supersymmetric particle-physics, although their energy density is cancelled by orientifold singularities upon compactification. Dark energy can still arise from supersymmetry-breaking anti-D-branes but it is probably time-dependent. We give a prescription for N=1 supersymmetrization of any (four-dimensional) nonlinear electrodynamics theory with a Lagrangian density satisfying a convexity condition that we relate to semi-classical unitarity. We apply it to the one-parameter ModMax extension of Maxwell electrodynamics that preserves both electromagnetic duality and conformal invariance, and its Born-Infeld-like generalization, proving that duality invariance is preserved. We also establish superconformal invariance of the superModMax theory by showing that its coupling to supergravity is super-Weyl invariant. Relations between the various formulations of nonlinear p-form electrodynamics with conformal-invariant weak-field and strong-field limits are clarified, with a focus on duality invariant (2n-1)-form electrodynamics and chiral 2n-form electrodynamics in Minkowski spacetime of dimension D=4n and D=4n+2, respectively. We exhibit a new family of chiral 2-form electrodynamics in D=6 for which these limits exhaust the possibilities for conformal invariance; the weak-field limit is related by dimensional reduction to the recently discovered ModMax generalisation of Maxwell's equations. All nonlinear extensions of the source-free Maxwell equations preserving both SO(2) electromagnetic duality invariance and conformal invariance are found, and shown to be limits of a one-parameter generalisation of Born-Infeld electrodynamics. The strong-field limit is the same as that found by Bialynicki-Birula from Born-Infeld theory but the weak-field limit is a new one-parameter extension of Maxwell electrodynamics, which is interacting but admits exact light-velocity plane-wave solutions of arbitrary polarisation. A manifestly Lorentz invariant action is found for the Floreanini-Jackiw chiral boson. The method involves a novel chiral reduction of the phase-space action for a string, and can be adapted to describe chiral bosons on the heterotic string worldsheet. The strong-field limit for the 2-form potential on an M5-brane yields a conformal chiral 2-form electrodynamics in six dimensions, with gauge-invariant self-interactions but no adjustable coupling constant; the stress tensor is that of a null fluid. Lorentz invariance can be made manifest via an interpretation as a tensionless `space-filling M5-brane', or as a truncation of the infra-red dynamics of an M5-brane in AdS7 x S4., Comment: 31 pages. A variant of the ADT method for the determination of gravitational charges as integrals at infinity is applied to "Chern-Simons-like" theories of 3D gravity, and the result is used to find the mass and angular momentum of the BTZ black hole considered as a solution of a variety of massive 3D gravity field equations. The results agree with many obtained previously by other methods, including our own results for "Minimal Massive Gravity", but they disagree with others, including recently reported results for "Exotic Massive Gravity". The IR limit of a planar static D3-brane in AdS5 x S5 is a tensionless D3-brane at the AdS horizon, with dynamics governed by a strong-field limit of the Dirac-Born-Infeld action analogous to that found from the Born-Infeld action by Bialynicki-Birula. As in that case, the field equations are those of an interacting 4D conformal invariant field theory with an Sl(2;R) electromagnetic duality invariance, but the D3-brane origin makes these properties manifest. In 1980, Antonio Aurilia, Hermann Nicolai and I constructed an N=8 supergravity with a positive exponential potential for one of the 70 scalar fields by adapting the dimensional reduction of 11D supergravity to allow for a non-zero 4-form field-strength in 4D. This model, now viewed as a particular gauged maximal supergravity, had little influence at the time because it does not have a maximally-symmetric vacuum. However, as shown here, it does have a domain-wall solution, which lifts to the M2-brane solution of D=11 supergravity. A given field theory action determines a set of field equations but other actions may yield equivalent field equations; if so they are on-shell equivalent. They may also be off-shell equivalent, being related by the elimination of auxiliary fields or by local field redefinitions, but this is not guaranteed, as we demonstrate by consideration of the linearized limit of 3D massive gravity models. The linearized equations of `New Massive Gravity' propagate a parity doublet of massive spin-2 modes in 3D Minkowski spacetime, but a different non-linear extension is made possible by `third-way' consistency. There is a `Chern-Simons-like' action, as for other 3D massive gravity models, but the new theory is `exotic': its action is parity odd. A Schroedinger equation proposed for the GMP gapped spin-2 mode of fractional Quantum Hall states is found from a novel non-relativistic limit, applicable only in 2+1 dimensions, of the massive spin-2 Fierz-Pauli field equations. It is also found from a novel null reduction of the linearized Einstein field equations in 3+1 dimensions, and in this context a uniform distribution of spin-2 particles implies, via a Brinkmann-wave solution of the non-linear Einstein equations, a confining harmonic oscillator potential for the individual particles., Comment: 5 pages. The two-twistor formulation of particle mechanics in D-dimensional anti-de Sitter space for D=4,5,7, which linearises invariance under the AdS isometry group Sp(4;K) for K=R,C,H, is generalized to the massless N-extended "spinning particle". The twistor variables are gauge invariant with respect to the initial N local worldline supersymmetries; this simplifies aspects of the quantum theory such as implications of global gauge anomalies. The Souriau massless Galilean particle of "colour" $k$ and spin $s$ is shown to be the Galilean limit of the Souriau tachyon of mass $m = ik$ and spin $s$. The action for a Galilean superstring is found from a non-relativistic limit of the closed Green-Schwarz (GS) superstring; it has zero tension and provides an example of a massless super-Galilean system A Wess-Zumino term leads to a topological central charge in the Galilean supersymmetry algebra, such that unitarity requires a upper bound on the total momentum. This Galilean-invariant bound, which is also implied by the classical phase-space constraints, is saturated by solutions of the superstring equations of motion that half-preserve supersymmetry. Starting from the classical action for a spin-zero particle in a D-dimensional anti-Sitter (AdS) spacetime, we recover the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound by quantization. For D=4,5,7, and using an Sl(2;K) spinor notation for K=R,C,H, we find a bi-twistor form of the action for which the AdS isometry group is linearly realised, although only for zero mass when D=4,7, in agreement with previous constructions. For zero mass and D=4, the conformal isometry group is linearly realized. We extend these results to the superparticle in the maximally supersymmetric "AdS x S" string/M-theory vacua, showing that quantization yields a 128+128 component supermultiplet.
