22. A mobile satellite news gathering system using a flat antenna

Abstract

We propose a mobile SNG (Satellite News Gathering) RF terminal that transmits TV programs from a ship or a vehicle to a broadcasting center in real time via a communications satellite. The terminal consists of a transmitter using beam steering flat antenna with 16 subarrays and of a turntable and pitch-roll stabilizer for mechanical tracking. The antenna beam is steered according to a received beacon signal, and rapid tracking with an accuracy of 0.05 [degrees] can be achieved even if slant angles in the pitch and roll of the ship in which the terminal is set, are [+ or -]10 [degrees] and [+ or -]15 [degrees]. We demonstrated the good performance of the terminal by transmitting a TV program from a ship in Tokyo Bay.

Abstract

Analysis of free-carrier and space-charge densities enhances the accuracy of estimation of deep-level concentrations in capacitance transient measurements. The analysis is applicable to midgap level studies and computes the Fermi level and the distance parameter, lambda. The efficiency of the analysis is illustrated by studies of the midgap defect in bulk GaAs materials.

35. An STM Observation of the Initial Process of Graphitization at the 6H-SiC(000¯1) Surface

Abstract

We applied scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) as well as low-energy electron diffraction (LEED)to an analysis of the initial process of graphitization at 6H-SiC(000¯1) surfaces. After annealing a6H-SiC(000¯1) surface at 1200◦C, there appeared many domains with a single graphite layer in theSTM image. Each graphite domain was azimuthally disordered to each other. Many large and smalldomains with various periodicities were observed in the STM image taken after annealing the surfaceat temperatures higher than 1300◦C. This STM image can be explained as Moir´e patterns due todifferent combinations of two graphite layers. In a LEED pattern azimuthally-rotated graphite 1×1spots are observed together with the fundamental SiC(0001)1×1 spots, in consistent with the STMresult.

41. Gas phase ion formation from a liquid beam of arginine in aqueous solution by IR multiphoton excitation

Abstract

A liquid beam of aqueous solutions of arginine (AH), its hydrochloric acid salt (AH2Cl) and its sodium salt (ANa) was irradiated with a pulsed IR laser at 3509 cm−1 (2.85 μm). Positive and negative ions ejected to the gas phase were mass analyzed. From the AH2Cl and the ANa aqueous solutions, the pre-existing ions in the solution were ejected directly to the gas phase. From the AH solution, on the other hand, both a protonated arginine ion, AH2+ and an argininate ion, A− were observed in the gas phase. Production of these ions is accounted for the four-photon excitation of water molecules in the solution.
