Magnetic neutron stars (NSs) often exhibit a cyclotron resonant scattering feature (CRSF) in their X-ray spectra. Cyclotron lines are believed to form in the radiative shock in the accretion column. High-luminosity NSs show a smooth anti-correlation between the cyclotron-line centroid ($E_{CRSF}$) and X-ray luminosity ($L_X$). The observed $E_{CRSF}-L_X$ smooth anti-correlation has been in tension with the theoretically predicted one by the radiative shock model. Since there is no other candidate site for the cyclotron-line formation, we re-examine the predicted rate of change of the cyclotron-line energy with luminosity at the radiative shock, taking a closer look at the Physics involved. We developed a purely analytical model describing the overall dependence of the observed cyclotron energy centroid on the shock front's height, including the relativistic boosting effect due to the mildly relativistic motion of the accreting plasma upstream with respect to the shock's reference frame and the gravitational redshift. We find that the CRSF energy varies with a) the shock height due to the dipolar magnetic field, b) the Doppler boosting between the shock and bulk-motion frames, and c) the gravitational redshift. We show that the relativistic effects noticeably weaken the predicted $E_{CRSF}-L_X$ anti-correlation. We use our model to fit the data of the X-ray source V0332+53 and demonstrate that the model fits the data impressively well, alleviating the tension between observations and theory. The reported $E_{CRSF}-L_X$ weak anti-correlation in the supercritical accretion regime may be explained by the combination of the variation of the magnetic-field strength along the accretion column, the effect of Doppler boosting, and the gravitational redshift. Thus, the actual magnetic field on the NS surface may be a factor of $\sim 2$ larger than the naively inferred value from the observed CRSF., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures, 1 table. Magnetic neutron stars (NSs) often exhibit a cyclotron resonant scattering feature (CRSF) in their X-ray spectra, but the site of the CRSF formation is still an open puzzle. A promising candidate for high-luminosity sources has always been the radiative shock (RS) in the accretion column. Yet, no quantitative calculations of spectral formation at the RS have been performed so far. Here we explore the scenario where the shock is the site of the CRSF formation. We study spectral formation at the RS and the emergent spectral shape across a wide range of the parameter space. We developed a Monte Carlo code to conduct radiation transfer simulations at the RS, adopting a fully relativistic scheme for the interaction between radiation and electrons. We properly treated bulk-motion Comptonization in the pre-shock region, thermal Comptonization in the post-shock region, and resonant Compton scattering in both regions. We calculated the angle- and energy-dependent emergent X-ray spectrum from the RS, focusing on both the CRSF and the X-ray continuum, under diverse conditions. We find that a power law, hard X-ray continuum and a CRSF are naturally produced by the first-order Fermi energization as the photons criss-cross the shock. The CRSF shape depends mainly on the transverse optical depth and the post-shock temperature. We show that the CRSF energy centroid is shifted by ~(20-30)% to lower energies compared to the classical cyclotron energy, due to the Doppler boosting between the shock frame and the bulk-motion frame. We demonstrate that a "bump" feature arises in the right wing of the CRSF due to upscattering of photons by the accreting plasma and extends to higher energies for larger optical depths and post-shock temperatures. Previous studies of the galaxy and galaxy cluster distribution in the local Universe found indications for a large extension of the Local Supercluster up to a radius of 190 h_70^-1 Mpc. We are using our large and highly complete CLASSIX survey of X-ray luminous galaxy clusters detected in the ROSAT All Sky Survey to trace the matter distribution in the local Universe and to explore the size of the flattened local density structure associated with the Local Supercluster. The Local Supercluster is oriented almost perpendicular to the Galactic plane. Since Galactic extinction increases towards the Galactic plane, objects are on average more easily visible perpendicular to the plane than close to it, also producing an apparent concentration of objects along the Local Supercluster. We can correct for this bias by a careful treatment of the survey selection function. We find a significant overdensity of clusters in a flattened structure along the Supergalactic plane with a thickness of about 50 Mpc and an extent of about 100 Mpc radius. Structures at a distance larger than 100 Mpc are not correlated to the Local Supercluster any more. The matter density contrast of the local superstructure to the surroundings is about a factor of 1.3 - 2.3. Within the Supergalactic plane the matter is concentrated mostly in two superclusters, the Perseus-Pisces Chain and Hydra-Centaurus supercluster. We have shown in our earlier work that the local Universe in a region with a radius of 100 - 170 Mpc has a lower density than the cosmic mean. For this reason, the Local Supercluster is not overdense with respect to the cosmic mean density. The Perseus-Pisces supercluster is known as one of the largest structures in the nearby Universe that has been charted by the galaxy and galaxy cluster distributions. For the latter mostly clusters from the Abell catalogue have been used. Here we take a new approach to a quantitative characterisation of the Perseus-Pisces supercluster using a statistically complete sample of X-ray luminous galaxy groups and clusters from our CLASSIX galaxy cluster redshift survey. We used a friends-of-friends technique to construct the supercluster membership. We also studied the structure of the Southern Great Wall, which merges with the Perseus-Pisces supercluster with a slightly increased friends-of-friends linking length. In this work we discuss the geometric structure of the superclusters, compare the X-ray luminosity distribution of the members with that of the surroundings, and provide an estimate of the supercluster mass. These results establish Perseus-Pisces as the largest superstructure in the Universe at redshifts z <= 0.03. With the new data this supercluster extends through the zone of avoidance, which has also been indicated by some studies of the galaxy distribution by means of HI observations. We investigated whether the shapes of the member groups and clusters in X-rays are aligned with the major axis of the supercluster. We find no evidence for a pronounced alignment, except for the ellipticities of Perseus and AWM7, which are aligned with the separation vector of the two systems and weakly with the supercluster., Comment: Astronomy and Astrophysics in press; 17 pages, 13 figures

As the largest, clearly defined building blocks of our Universe, galaxy clusters are interesting astrophysical laboratories and important probes for cosmology. X-ray surveys for galaxy clusters provide one of the best ways to characterise the population of galaxy clusters. We provide a description of the construction of the NORAS II galaxy cluster survey based on X-ray data from the northern part of the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. NORAS II extends the NORAS survey down to a flux limit of 1.8 x 10^(-12) erg s^-1 cm^-2 (0.1 - 2.4 keV) increasing the sample size by about a factor of two. The NORAS II cluster survey now reaches the same quality and depth of its counterpart, the Southern REFLEX II survey, allowing us to combine the two complementary surveys. The paper provides information on the determination of the cluster X-ray parameters, the identification process of the X-ray sources, the statistics of the survey, and the construction of the survey selection function, which we provide in numerical format. Currently NORAS II contains 860 clusters with a median redshift of z = 0.102. We provide a number of statistical functions including the logN-logS and the X-ray luminosity function and compare these to the results from the complementary REFLEX II survey. Using the NORAS II sample to constrain the cosmological parameters, sigma_8 and Omega_m, yields results perfectly consistent with those of REFLEX II. Overall, the results show that the two hemisphere samples, NORAS II and REFLEX II, can be combined without problems to an all-sky sample, just excluding the Zone-of-Avoidance., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures

Cygnus A harbours the nearest powerful radio jet of an Fanaroff-Riley (FR) class II radio galaxy in a galaxy cluster where the interaction of the jet with the intracluster medium (ICM) can be studied in detail. We use a large set of Chandra archival data, VLA and new LOFAR observations to shed new light on the interaction of the jets with the ICM. We identify an X-ray cavity in the distribution of the X-ray emitting plasma in the region south of the Cyg A nucleus which has lower pressure than the surrounding medium. The LOFAR and VLA radio observations show that the cavity is filled with synchrotron emitting plasma. The spectral age and the buoyancy time of the cavity indicates an age at least as large as the current Cyg A jets and not much larger than twice this time. We suggest that this cavity was created in a previous active phase of Cyg A when the energy output of the Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) was about two orders of magnitude less than today., Comment: Letter submitted on 4 May 2012 to A&A, 4 pages, 4 figures

It has been predicted that quark and hybrid stars, containing strange quark matter in their core, have a significantly smaller radius than ordinary neutron stars. Preliminary X-ray observations of isolated neutron stars indicated a surprisingly small radius consistent with quark matter in the interior of the star. However, a new analysis of the data led to a radius corresponding to an ordinary neutron star. Many open questions in X-ray astronomy are limited by the relatively small number of objects in uniform optically-identified samples, especially when rare subclasses are considered, or subsets isolated to search for evolution or correlations between wavebands. We describe initial results of a program aimed to ultimately yield 10^4 X-ray source identifications--a sample about an order of magnitude larger than earlier efforts. The technique employs X-ray data from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS), and optical imaging and spectroscopic followup from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Optical objects in the SDSS catalogs are automatically cross-correlated with RASS X-ray source positions; then priorities for follow-on SDSS optical spectra of candidate counterparts are automatically assigned using an algorithm based on the known fx/fopt ratios for various classes of X-ray emitters. SDSS parameters for optical morphology, magnitude, colors, plus FIRST radio data, serve as proxies for object class. Initial application of this approach to 1400 deg^2 of sky provides a catalog of 1200 spectroscopically confirmed quasars/AGN that are probable RASS identifications. We present the ROSAT All-Sky Survey Bright Source Catalogue (RASS-BSC, revision 1RXS) derived from the all-sky survey performed during the first half year (1990/91) of the ROSAT mission. 18,811 sources are catalogued (i) down to a limiting ROSAT PSPC count-rate of 0.05 cts/s in the 0.1-2.4 keV energy band, (ii) with a detection likelihood of at least 15 and (iii) at least 15 source counts. The 18,811 sources underwent both an automatic validation and an interactive visual verification process in which for 94% of the sources the results of the standard processing were confirmed. The remaining 6% have been analyzed using interactive methods and these sources have been flagged. Flags are given for (i) nearby sources; (ii) sources with positional errors; (iii) extended sources; (iv) sources showing complex emission structures; and (v) sources which are missed by the standard analysis software. Broad band (0.1-2.4 keV) images are available for sources flagged by (ii), (iii) and (iv). For each source the ROSAT name, position in equatorial coordinates, positional error, source count-rate and error, background count-rate, exposure time, two hardness-ratios and errors, extent and likelihood of extent, likelihood of detection, and the source extraction radius are provided. At a brightness limit of 0.1 cts/s (8,547 sources) the catalogue represents a sky coverage of 92%. We present limits to the log N - log S curve for isolated neutron stars, both cooling and accreting neutron stars, which are not active as radio pulsars, as observed with the ROSAT All-Sky Survey and compare it with theoretical expectations. So far, only one isolated neutron star is identified optically among ROSAT sources, namely RXJ185635-3754 (Walter & Matthews 1997). Three more promising candidates have been suggested. In addition, several upper limit estimates are available on the space density of such neutron stars from different optical follow-up studies. We show that the log N - log S curve according to the current observations, including the identified neutron star, the three additional candidates, and the upper limits, lies between the theoretical expectations for middle-aged cooling neutron stars and old accreting neutron stars. At least one of the neutron star candidates found so far with ROSAT may be cooling instead of accreting. We suggest that the fact that more accreting isolated old neutron stars were expected (e.g., Madau & Blaes 1994) than observed is mostly due to the velocity distribution used in those calculations. More recent radio observations indicate that there are fewer slow neutron stars, ie., fewer accreting X-ray bright old neutron stars. The ROSAT Deep Survey includes a complete sample of 50 X-ray sources with fluxes in the $0.5 - 2$ keV band larger than 5.5 $10^{-15}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ in the Lockman field (Hasinger et al., Paper I). We have obtained deep broad-band CCD images of the field and spectra of many optical objects near the positions of the X-ray sources. We define systematically the process leading to the optical identifications of the X-ray sources. For this purpose, we introduce five identification (ID) classes that characterize the process in each case. Among the 50 X-ray sources, we identify 39 AGNs, 3 groups of galaxies, 1 galaxy and 3 galactic stars. Four X-ray sources remain unidentified so far; two of these objects may have an unusually large ratio of X-ray to optical flux. The ROSAT Deep Survey in the Lockman Hole is the most sensitive X-ray survey performed to date, encompassing an exposure time of 207 ksec with the PSPC and a total of 1.32 Msec with the HRI aboard ROSAT. Here we present the complete catalogue of 50 X-ray sources with PSPC fluxes (0.5--2 keV) above $ 5.5 \times 10^{-15} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1}$. The optical identifications are discussed in an accompanying paper (Schmidt et al., 1997). We also derive a new log(N)--log(S) function reaching a source density of $970 \pm 150 deg^{-2}$ at a limiting flux of $10^{-15} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1}$. At this level 70-80% of the 0.5--2 keV X-ray background is resolved into discrete sources. Utilizing extensive simulations of artificial PSPC and HRI fields we discuss in detail the effects of source confusion and incompleteness both on source counts and on optical identifications. Based on these simulations we set conservative limits on flux and on off-axis angles, which guarantee a high reliability of the catalogue. We also present simulations of shallower fields and show that surveys, which are based on PSPC exposures longer than 50 ksec, become severely confusion limited typically a factor of 2 above their $4\sigma$ detection threshold. This has consequences for recent claims of a possible new source population emerging at the faintest X-ray fluxes. The intensity of the soft X-Ray background is correlated with the distribution of galaxies. To demonstrate this, magnitude limited galaxy samples extracted from bright galaxy catalogues and the Lick counts are utilized. Significant correlations are detected for all magnitude ranges, i.e. 10

We develop and apply a novel method of analysis to study the X-ray spectral properties of 908 QSOs in the Large Bright Quasar Survey (LBQS) that were observed during the soft X-ray ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS). Due to the relatively short (<600sec) RASS exposure times, only 10% of the QSOs are detected in X-rays, so X-ray spectral model fits for individual QSOs are precluded by poor photon statistics. Spectral stacking provides effectively much more sensitive X-ray observations for an average QSO in bins of redshift, and for several classes of QSOs. We model the stacked X-ray spectra in a way that obviates both the distinction between detections and non-detections, and the need to stack together only those objects observed through similar Galactic column densities N_H. In application to the LBQS/RASS sample, we marginally confirm a flattening of the X-ray spectral index of QSOs toward higher redshifts. Radio-loud QSOs show flatter X-ray photon indices, in agreement with previous work. We have made cross-correlation analyses of (2 -- 15 keV) HEAO A2 and 1 keV ROSAT PSPC All-Sky Survey maps over a selected area ($\sim$ 4000 deg$^2$) with high galactic latitude (b>40 deg). We have calculated the correlations for the bright ROSAT sources and residual background separately with the \HEAO A2 TOT (2 -- 10 keV) and HRD (5 -- 15 keV) maps. The amplitude of the bright \ROSAT source -- A2 CCFs are consistent with expectations from model populations of AGNs and clusters of galaxies, which emit in both bands. However, the residual ROSAT background -- A2 CCFs amplitude at zero degree are about a factor of three larger than that expected from the model populations. Our soft-hard zero-lag and angular CCF results have been compared with the 1 keV auto-correlation function (ACF) found by Soltan et al. (1995) for the same ROSAT data. Their significant angular CCF at a scale of < 5 deg is of an unknown origin and it could represent a new class of cosmic X-ray sources. If this 1 keV ACF has a hot plasma spectrum with kT\sim 2 keV, contribution of this component is consistent with both our zero-lag CCF in excess of the population synthesis model prediction and the upper-limit to the angular CCF at \theta \sim 2.5 deg. Large-scale fluctuations of the X-ray background are investigated using the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. The autocorrelation function of the extragalactic background at 1 keV is determined at separations 0.1 - 40 deg. We detect a significant signal for separations < 6 deg, which is larger than previous upper limits. We analyse the cross-correlation between the angular positions of Abell clusters of galaxies and the intensity of the X-ray background. The cross-correlation extends to several degrees for clusters of distance class .leq. 4. We conclude that Abell clusters are associated with extended, low surface brightness X-ray haloes. The mean luminosity of the diffuse sources in the 0.5-2.0 keV band is equal to approx 2.5 * 10^{43} h^{-2} erg s^{-1} and their characteristic radius a = 10 h^{-1} Mpc (H_0 = 100 h km s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}). It is shown that the higher density of normal galaxies and AGNs around clusters cannot be responsible for the increased X-ray emission. This is because it would produce a signal in the autocorrelation function measurable by the Ginga LAC experiment. Apparent extended emission could be produced either by a number of discrete sources associated with groups of galaxies concentrated around rich clusters or by a hot diffuse gas.
