In the era of higher education institutions' internationalisation, international student mobility is viewed as a crucial educational tool for enhancing the cross-cultural competence of learners. This paper aims to present research findings on the development of cross-cultural competence (skills, knowledge, and attitudes) among students participating in a short-term international mobility programme. The study involved 45 students from five European universities located in Kosovo, the Czech Republic, Poland, Belgium, and Malta. We utilised three scales in our methodology: the Cross-Cultural Adaptability Inventory, the Multicultural Personality Questionnaire, and the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale, along with data from a structured diary. Our findings indicate that students who took part in this programme expanded their knowledge through various trainings and workshops during each study visit abroad. Students not only gained new knowledge and specific skills (e.g., conflict management, negotiation skills), and behaviours (e.g., tolerance, openness, trust), but they also improved previously acquired competencies, such as professional and linguistic ones (English fluency). This study contributes to the scientific understanding of cross-cultural competence development and may also be valuable in designing intercultural training and mobility programmes for students.

Abstract Iron and heme are essential nutrients for all branches of life. Pathogenic members of the Bacteroidota phylum, including Porphyromonas gingivalis, do not synthesize heme and rely on host hemoproteins for heme as a source of iron and protoporphyrin IX. P. gingivalis is the main pathogen responsible for dysbiosis in the oral microbiome and the initiation and progression of chronic periodontitis. It utilizes Hmu and Hus systems for heme uptake, including HmuY and HusA hemophore-like proteins and their cognate HmuR and HusB TonB-dependent outer membrane heme receptors. Although the mechanisms of heme uptake are relatively well characterized in P. gingivalis, little is known about the importance of heme uptake systems in heme and iron homeostasis and virulence. Therefore, this work aimed to investigate these mechanisms in detail. We characterized the P. gingivalis double mutant strain deficient in functional hmuY and hmuR or husA and husB genes. Global gene expression and phenotypic analyses revealed that the Hmu system significantly influences heme homeostasis, confirming its main role in heme supply. Both systems, particularly the Hus system, affect the virulence of P. gingivalis. Our results demonstrate the diverse role of Hmu and Hus systems in P. gingivalis heme and iron homeostasis and virulence.

Abstract Background Medical students may be influenced by perceived program culture and personal fit when applying to residency. Activity Medical students were given three iterations of a generic residency program description presented with gender-neutral, feminine, or masculine skewed language and were subsequently asked to assess their perception of gender diversity and fit within each program. Results Gendered language in program descriptions had a direct effect on all participants’ sense of gender diversity in programs. The feminine-skewed description was most favorably perceived, regardless of respondent gender. Conclusion These findings provide a starting point from which residency programs can consider the impact of gendered language on student recruitment and gender equity.

Abstract Background Over the past decade, numerous treatment options have emerged for patients with locally advanced and metastatic neuroendocrine tumours (NETs). Nevertheless, the optimal timing of treatment interventions remains uncertain, given the highly variable disease course observed in these patients, even when patients have the same tumour stage and grade. The aim of the study was to evaluate the predictive role of standardized uptake values (SUVs) and volumetric parameters obtained from pretreatment [68Ga]Ga-DOTA-TATE for response to SSA therapy in patients with NET. In this retrospective study, we included 42 patients (21 women, 21 men; age range: 46–84 years) with histologically confirmed, metastatic, NET (G1 13, G2 28 cases); median Ki-67 index 5%, range 1–16) who received long acting SSA as a first line treatment and underwent [68Ga]Ga-DOTA-TATE PET/CT before SSA treatment. For all [68Ga]Ga-DOTA-TATE avid lesion SUVmax, SUVmean, somatostatin receptor expression tumour volume (STV), total lesion somatostatin receptor expression (TLD, STV multiplied by SUV mean) and Tmean/Smean (SUVmean of tumours/metastases divided by SUVmean of normal spleen) were measured. Finally, the sum of STV (total STV, TSTV) and TLD (total TLD, TTLD) was calculated for each patient and used in the analysis. Results During the study period, 14 patients had stable disease (33.3%) and 28 patients experienced progression (66.7%), among whom 12 patients died. The median progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were 26.5 and 46.5 months, respectively. In the univariate and multivariate analysis, in the whole population study, Tmean/Smean ratio (HR 1.88, 95% CI 1.06–3.35, p = 0.03), Ki-67 index (HR 1.14, CI 1.03–1.26, p = 0.01) and pre-treatment chromogranin A serum concentration (HR 1.01, CI 1.0–1.03, p = 0.01) were significantly associated with PFS. Objective: Return to play (RTP) decisions after cranial surgery are important to patients. Most published data relate to RTP following sports-related brain injury. This study investigated factors that influence neurosurgical RTP decision-making following craniotomy for non-traumatic brain lesions. Methods: A patient scenario-based survey was distributed to U.S. and Europe-based neurosurgeons via the American Association of Neurological Surgeons/Congress of Neurological Surgeons Tumor Section and the European Association of Neuro-Oncology. From one core patient scenario, 5 further scenarios were developed involving patients of varying age, sport preference, tumor pathology, and craniotomy approach. Respondents provided RTP recommendations and factors important in forming these recommendations. Results: Forty-one responses were received; Europe (48%), U.S. (37%). The most commonly cited factors influencing RTP decision-making across scenarios were symptomatic recovery (85.4%), resolution of blood and/or air on imaging (43.4%), and patient demand (31.7%). The sports with the longest average RTP timeline were boxing (10.3 months), rugby (8.7 months), and American football (8.5 months) in the core patient scenario. Twenty-nine percent of neurosurgeons requested neuroimaging before determining RTP recommendations in this scenario, more commonly in America than Europe (46.7% and 5.0% respectively, p = .006). Conclusions: Although limited by sample size, the data provides a foundation to support development of a systematic approach to RTP decision-making following craniotomy for brain lesions of non-traumatic etiology. Future work to develop consensus guidelines will benefit from objective data about outcomes, particularly in relation to repeat imaging prior to RTP.

Teachers are increasingly expected to demonstrate frequent use of and proficiency with educational technologies in the classroom. Meanwhile, teacher experiences with new technologies prior to their entry into the classroom do not always match these expectations. For many teacher education programs, the solution to this challenge lies in the incorporation of educational technologies into coursework for preservice teachers (PSTs). This study examines PST reported uses and proficiency with educational technologies before and after taking introductory educational coursework. Based on surveys administered at the beginning and end of introductory education courses, the study found that PSTs reported consistent improvement in their technological skills. There were also positive relationships among skills competence and PST outcomes of satisfaction, effectiveness, and usefulness. These findings support existing efforts to incorporate educational technology into teacher certification coursework, while also suggesting ways to expand on these approaches to better support PSTs experience with educational technologies.

The paper presents a description of a new species of the genus Cephalotoma Lesne, caught in northern Thailand. The new species, C. patcharinae Borowski n. sp., is the first species in the Oriental region with a two-segmented club of antennae. The effect of the discussion presented in the paper is synonymising the tribe Cephalotomini Liu and Schönitzer, 2011 n. syn. with Trogoxylini Lesne, 1921. Moreover, the paper contains a key to classify all the species known from the Oriental region and belonging to the genus Cephalotoma.

Newly developed formulas of ready-to-eat (RTE) products, despite conforming to the latest nutritional trends involving low-processed and high-protein products, may pose a risk of promoting the growth of Listeria monocytogenes during shelf life. Food safety experts recommend challenge tests to assess the growth potential of L. monocytogenes, which will ultimately provide microbiological evidence to determine the food safety limit. The present study evaluated whether RTE uncured vacuum-packed pork bars with dried plasma met the 100 CFU/g safety level at the end of shelf life under certain storage conditions and aimed to develop predictive models for the growth of L. monocytogenes in the above product. The bars were artificially inoculated with a mixture of three strains of L. monocytogenes at two different inoculum densities of 2 log CFU/g and 5 log CFU/g and stored at three different temperatures (2, 4, and 6 °C) and then subjected to microbiological evaluation at specific time intervals up to 21 storage days. The growth potential (Δ-value) for RTE pork bars contaminated with 2 log CFU/g L. monocytogenes inoculum was 0.36, 0.14, and 0.91 log CFU/g at 2, 4, and 6 °C, respectively, while for bars contaminated with 5 log CFU/g inoculum, they were −0.36, −0.40, and 0.64 at 2, 4, and 6 °C, respectively. Statistically higher growth potential (p < 0.05) was detected for RTE bars contaminated with 2 log CFU/g inoculum than with 5 log CFU/g. The results indicate that this type of product must be classified as a food category: “Ready-to-eat foods able to support the growth of L. monocytogenes, other than those intended for infants and for special medical purposes” (Category 1.2. according to EU Regulation 2073/2005). The newly created models can also describe L. monocytogenes growth in an environment where factors, such as temperature, pH, and aw, change with time. The results showed that a higher inoculum density statistically reduced the growth potential values of L. monocytogenes compared to a lower density.

Objective: The purpose of this paper is to verify and determine changes in training and development processes regarding the COVID-19 pandemic in Polish companies. Research Design & Methods: The research was conducted in 100 companies using CAWI and was addressed to human resource (HR) specialists, mainly in large companies from a diverse range of sectors, mainly in manufacturing, public sector, ICT, and transport. The tailored questionnaire consisted of 62 statements addressing the following dimensions: training and development (T&D) policy, organisational expectations, procedures of preparation, implementation and monitoring of T&D, participants, evaluation, and financing and investment in T&D. The theoretical base of the paper is human resource development (HRD) theory. Findings: The results indicate several changes made by organisations as a result of the pandemic, some of which were only temporary, while others became a permanent feature of T&D policies. Generally, Polish companies managed to adapt to the environmental changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic to the satisfaction of both employees and employers. Implications / Recommendations: Results of the research can be used to improve training and development programmes offered by companies to increase employees’ skills, knowledge, and attitudes in the workplace. They could also help to adjust the training to the new situation and conditions in the post-pandemic period. Finally, they can serve institutions responsible for policy provision of HRD at a national level to provide possibilities to apply for funding for T&D activities. Contribution: No detailed quantitative study has been done so far to analyse if and how training and development activities have changed over the past few years, especially in the Polish business environment.

The aim of the study was evaluation of the concentrations of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-8, IL-12β and tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) in the serum and milk of cows with mastitis caused by Streptococcus agalactiae.

Introduction: Bezoars are masses of indigestible foreign material in the gastrointestinal tract, usually in the stomach. These materials could be indigestible fruits, hair, milk products, or tablets. In children, the most common type of bezoar is trichobezoar (formed from hair). Case Presentation: We describe a female patient who has been complaining about deterioration of mood, collapse without losing consciousness, scotomas, and cardiac arrhythmia for 2 years. Based on the results of thyroid hormone, resistance to thyroid hormone (RTH) was suspected. Physical examination during hospitalization revealed a palpable upper abdominal mass. Several diagnostic examinations were performed. The abdominal ultrasound showed acoustic shadowing caused by a pathological structure in the upper abdomen. Therefore, the contrast X-ray of the digestive tract revealed a deficit of contrast with an irregular shape in the stomach body and the pylorus region. Due to these results, a gastroscopy was performed, which revealed a large trichobezoar of the stomach. The trichobezoar was surgically removed without complications. Conclusion: The case presented shows that these nonspecific symptoms and laboratory test suggesting RTH require multi-path diagnostics and the cooperation of many specialists, ultimately giving a surprising diagnosis. It is crucial to interpret diagnostic examinations with regard to the patient’s physical condition. Diagnosis of trichobezoar requires a detailed search of causes to avoid another incident.

The article presents the results of a survey conducted among Polish geography teachers. The purpose of the research was to examine use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in geographical education, carried out remotely after the end of the Lockdown. The collected opinions show that the vast majority of teachers now use information obtained from the Internet and free applications in lessons much more often than before the Covid-19 pandemic. The forced abandonment of traditional classroom learning and its replacement with distance learning has contributed to the development of new skills among teachers and students. Despite the initial reluctance caused by the lack of preparation for the use of new information technologies, geography teachers see many advantages to remote teaching using ICT. In the opinion of those surveyed, the acquired practical digital and communication skills have a positive impact on the teaching of geography. Respondents emphasized that distance learning should only be a supplement to traditional education and used in exceptional situations.

Abstract The aim of this paper is to present an analytical method of calculating forces acting on the thumb, index, middle finger, and metacarpal part of a hand prosthesis in a cylindrical grip. This prehension pattern represents a common operation of grabbing and manipulating everyday life objects. The design process assumed that such a prosthesis would have 5 fully operating fingers and 18 total degrees of freedom: three for each finger including the thumb, and another three for the wrist. The assumed load was 1 kg and the diameter equaled 70 mm, representing a water bottle. The method was based on analytical mechanics and as opposed to experiments or numerical methods does not require many resources. The calculations involved solving a system with seven unknown forces using an equilibrium equation for forces and moments in all three axes. The resulting equations were presented in a matrix form and solved using MATLAB software. The validation of the method with an experiment using FSR sensors and comparing it to other reports showed differences in index and middle finger involvement. However, the total sum of forces was similar, therefore it is reasoned that the grip can be performed and the prediction was accurate for the thumb and metacarpal. When using the model, the friction coefficient must be chosen with a safe margin as it influences the grip force. The presented method can be used for other models and designs by inserting their dimensions into the equations and solving them numerically to obtain forces useful in mechatronics design.

Introduction: In anticipation of institutional and community-wide COVID-19 immunization clinics, an educational program for the administration of COVID-19 vaccines was developed, collaborating with the Virginia Department of Health to train doctor of medicine and physician assistant students to serve as vaccinators. Faculty and students also worked with state legislatures to propose and enact a bill that would enable such students to vaccinate patients. Methods: Between January 2021 and August 2022, 263 student volunteers completed 3,685 person-hours, administering 48,279 doses. On the basis of community need, the majority of vaccines were administered at mass vaccination clinics in Chesapeake (47%) and Norfolk (22%) in Virginia. One year after the first COVID-19 immunization clinic, the authors surveyed students who assisted with clinics, utilizing a Likert scale and free-text responses to elicit feedback about the training and volunteer experience. Results: Volunteers ranked the vaccination clinics among the top third of established volunteer experiences offered at Eastern Virginia Medical School, and 75% of respondents believed that this training should be a permanent part of their program curriculum. Conclusions: This paper presents a strategy for preparing students to serve as vaccinators during public health emergencies and show how other institutions of medical education can prepare for and engage student participation in vaccination campaigns and emergent health initiatives.

Abstract Background Significant disparity in gender distribution exists among medical specialties. Residency program websites are a main source of preliminary program information for candidates, and website content may influence a prospective applicant’s sense of belongingness within a particular program. Given the importance of the residency program website as a recruiting tool, this study sought to examine and compare the presence of gendered language and imagery on residency program websites across various specialties. Methods A list of words considered masculine or feminine was used to evaluate residency program websites of the two most male-dominated specialties (orthopedic and thoracic surgery), female-dominated specialties (pediatrics and obstetrics and gynecology), and gender-balanced specialties (dermatology and family medicine) in the United States in 2022. Forty-five residency programs were randomly selected from each specialty across different regions of the US, with the exception of thoracic surgery of which there are only 33 programs. Masculine and feminine words were evaluated using a parsing and scraping program. Representation of female and male-presenting team members in photos on program websites was also evaluated. Results Masculine wording occurred more frequently in male-dominated specialties compared to gender-balanced (p = 0.0030), but not female-dominated specialties (p = 0.2199). Feminine language was used more frequently in female-dominated compared to male dominated fields (p = 0.0022), but not gender balanced (p = 0.0909). Abstract Prostate cancer (PCa) is a common and fatal type of cancer in men. Metastatic PCa (mPCa) is a major factor contributing to its lethality, although the mechanisms remain poorly understood. PTEN is one of the most frequently deleted genes in mPCa. Here we show a frequent genomic co-deletion of PTEN and STAT3 in liquid biopsies of patients with mPCa. Loss of Stat3 in a Pten-null mouse prostate model leads to a reduction of LKB1/pAMPK with simultaneous activation of mTOR/CREB, resulting in metastatic disease. However, constitutive activation of Stat3 led to high LKB1/pAMPK levels and suppressed mTORC1/CREB pathway, preventing mPCa development. Metformin, one of the most widely prescribed therapeutics against type 2 diabetes, inhibits mTORC1 in liver and requires LKB1 to mediate glucose homeostasis. We find that metformin treatment of STAT3/AR-expressing PCa xenografts resulted in significantly reduced tumor growth accompanied by diminished mTORC1/CREB, AR and PSA levels. PCa xenografts with deletion of STAT3/AR nearly completely abrogated mTORC1/CREB inhibition mediated by metformin. Moreover, metformin treatment of PCa patients with high Gleason grade and type 2 diabetes resulted in undetectable mTORC1 levels and upregulated STAT3 expression. Furthermore, PCa patients with high CREB expression have worse clinical outcomes and a significantly increased risk of PCa relapse and metastatic recurrence. In summary, we have shown that STAT3 controls mPCa via LKB1/pAMPK/mTORC1/CREB signaling, which we have identified as a promising novel downstream target for the treatment of lethal mPCa.

This study examines the utilization of granite stone-crushing waste in the production of porous concrete, with a particular emphasis on the influence of aggregate composition and cement paste layer thickness on the material’s strength and density. Two types of aggregates were employed in this study: granite crushing screenings and granite crushed stone. The impact of aggregate grain size on the properties of porous concrete properties was investigated, and it was found that the use of granite screenings (2.5–5 mm) resulted in superior concrete characteristics compared to granite crushed stone (5–10 mm). This study puts forward a method for optimizing the composition of porous concrete to achieve an optimal balance of compressive strength and density. A method for the design of porous concrete was proposed, incorporating experimental results and the dependencies of strength on the water/cement ratio (W/C). Equations were developed to predict concrete strength based on W/C and cement paste layer thicknesses (CPLTs). The method provides preliminary mix proportions, which should be validated and adjusted for the final design. The findings demonstrate the potential for utilizing stone-crushing waste to produce environmentally sustainable and high-quality porous concrete.

Multiple myeloma is an incurable cancer that originates from antibody-producing plasma cells. It is characterized by an intrinsic ability to produce large amounts of immunoglobulin-like proteins. The high rate of synthesis makes myeloma cells dependent on protein processing mechanisms related to the proteasome. This dependence made proteasome inhibitors such as bortezomib and carfilzomib one of the most important classes of drugs used in multiple myeloma treatment. Inhibition of the proteasome is associated with alteration of a number of important biological processes leading, in consequence, to inhibition of angiogenesis. The effect of drugs in this group and the degree of patient response to the treatment used is itself an extremely complex process that depends on many factors. At cellular level the change in sensitivity to proteasome inhibitors may be related to differences in the expression level of proteasome subunits, the degree of proteasome loading, metabolic adaptation, transcriptional or epigenetic factors. These are just some of the possibilities that may influence differences in response to proteasome inhibitors. This review describes the main cellular factors that determine the degree of response to proteasome inhibitor drugs, as well as information on the key role of the proteasome and the performance characteristics of the inhibitors that are the mainstay of multiple myeloma treatment.

The studied collecting electrodes for electrostatic precipitators are cold-rolled formed. Here Sigma 750 open section was manufactured of DC01 steel grade. Length of the electrodes ranged from 8 to 13 meters, all were thin-walled of 1.5 mm. Tolerance of their manufacture is strictly set. A database of material properties, chemical composition, and a set of final tolerance of manufactured profiles has been collected. At first basic statistics for the data has been done. Finally statistical relation between the material composition and profile geometrical tolerance has been studied, next between the material mechanical properties and profile geometrical tolerance has been examined.

Abstract Despite recent local reintroductions of the Eurasian lynx Lynx lynx in central and north-eastern Poland, the increase in its population was not followed by its westward expansion. To address this problem and restore the lynx population in north-western Poland, 61 captive-born individuals of Baltic population origin were released in the province of Western Pomerania in 2019–2021. Prior to their release, all the animals underwent an adaptation training phase. They were then set free according to a hard-release protocol and subsequently monitored by means of GPS telemetry. In order to assess the short-term reintroduction success, the survival and causes of death of the released individuals were studied as a function of sex, age, training time, and release time and place. The overall survival rate was 71.15%, the median survival time 202 days. Most mortality, due to environmental factors, i.e. scabies (> 200 days) or traffic collisions (
