Dengue fever, primarily transmitted worldwide by the mosquito Aedes aegypti, poses significant public health challenges in tropical and subtropical regions. While effective vector control is crucial in the absence of reliable dengue vaccines, traditional control methods face obstacles like mosquito resistance to insecticides and a very high cost. By combining geospatial data, including satellite imagery, as descriptors, and entomological surveys as target variables in a Random Forest model, we predicted the number of potential mosquito breeding sites, derived the associated environmental carrying capacity for larvae, and used the Arbocarto process-based model to predict Ae.aegypti population densities in an urban region of French Guiana, South America. Our findings highlight that remote sensing data may help predict the number of potential breeding sites over urban areas. Our simulations indicate higher mosquito densities in urban residential areas and a strong spatial and temporal heterogeneity. These densities fluctuate according to intra-annual variations in temperature and precipitation, with higher densities associated with intermediate housing. A comparison with the conventional estimation of environmental carrying capacity for larvae in the current Arbocarto procedure highlights the advantages of our approach. Our study demonstrates the utility of integrating remote sensing with predictive modeling to enhance vector surveillance and control strategies, and provides a replicable approach for monitoring a dengue vector mosquito population in dynamic urban landscapes.

Background: Antananarivo, the capital city of Madagascar, is experiencing a steady increase in population growth. Due to the abundance of mosquito vectors in this locality, the population exposed to mosquito-borne diseases is therefore also increasing, as is the risk of epidemic episodes. The aim of the present study was to assess, in a resource-limited setting, the information on mosquito population dynamics and disease transmission risk that can be provided through a longitudinal entomological study carried out in a multi-host single site. Methods: Mosquitoes were collected every 15 days over 16 months (from January 2017 to April 2018) using six CDC-light traps in a peri-urban area of Antananarivo. Multivariable generalised linear models were developed using indoor and outdoor densities of the predominant mosquito species as response variables and moon illumination, environmental data and climatic data as the explanatory variables. Results: Overall, 46,737 mosquitoes belonging to at least 20 species were collected, of which Culex antennatus (68.9%), Culex quinquefasciatus (19.8%), Culex poicilipes (3.7%) and Anopheles gambiae sensu lato (2.3%) were the most abundant species. Mosquito densities were observed to be driven by moon illumination and climatic factors interacting at different lag periods. The outdoor models demonstrated biweekly and seasonal patterns of mosquito densities, while the indoor models demonstrated only a seasonal pattern. Conclusions: An important diversity of mosquitoes exists in the peri-urban area of Antananarivo. Some well-known vector species, such as Cx. antennatus, a major vector of West Nile virus (WNV) and Rift-Valley fever virus (RVFV), Cx. quinquefasciatus, a major vector of WNV, Cx. poicilipes, a candidate vector of RVFV and An. gambiae sensu lato, a major vector of Plasmodium spp., are abundant. Les moustiques sont vecteurs de nombreux agents pathogènes responsables de maladies, telles que le paludisme, la dengue, le chikungunya ou la fièvre jaune. Selon l’Organisation mondiale de la santé, ils provoquent plusieurs centaines de milliers de décès chaque année. Ils sont aussi à l’origine de zoonoses, comme la fièvre de la vallée du Rift et la fièvre du Nil occidental.Dans ce contexte, les besoins en outils opérationnels permettant d’orienter les actions de surveillance et de contrôle sont importants, à la fois dans les pays du Sud — les zones tropicales et subtropicales sont les plus touchées par les maladies causées par les moustiques —, mais également dans les pays du Nord, où l’installation de nouvelles espèces comme le moustique-tigre augmente le risque d’émergence de maladies. Pour répondre à ces besoins, les images d’observation de la Terre présentent un fort intérêt : la distribution dans l’espace et la dynamique temporelle des moustiques sont influencées par des variables climatiques (températures, précipitations, humidité) et environnementales (disponibilité de zones en eau, végétation), dont les indicateurs peuvent être dérivés d’images satellite.De nombreuses études récentes ont permis de développer des méthodes innovantes couplant télédétection et modélisation spatiale pour prédire la dynamique spatiale et temporelle des moustiques vecteurs et des maladies associées. Event Based Surveillance (EBS) systems such as HealthMap, Promed and PADI-web are used daily to detect outbreak events reported in web articles. Once the articles are collected, these systems rely on human moderation, and implement supervised classification algorithms to classify articles according to their relevance (Valentin et al., 2020). Applying such supervised methods can be challenging, as epidemiological datasets have an imbalanced class distribution, and because the annotation task, which is critical to the success of these models, can be expensive and time consuming. Another important limitation of EBS systems is that the drivers of disease transmission (e.g. disease characteristics, environmental and epidemiological risk factors) are not always found in textual data and are therefore not taken into account by EBS systems (Kim & Ahn, 2021). In this context, we propose an unsupervised approach that relies on the spatio-temporal information of the reported epidemiological events, to classify articles while taking into account the environmental factors associated with disease onset through risk mapping. This method, called EpiDCA, is an adaptation of the Dendritic Cells Algorithm (DCA), inspired by the danger theory (Greensmith et al., 2008). EpiDCA is characterized by expert-defined parameters, making it applicable to different diseases and environmental contexts. The proposed method was first tested and evaluated using PADI- web and HealthMap datasets related to avian influenza (AI) in Asia between 2018 and 2019, and a suitability map for AI produced for the same area. To measure the accuracy of the model, we calculated the precision, recall and F-score. EpiDCA achieved a very good performance with an F-score of 0.70 and 0.90 for an imbalanced and a balanced dataset respectively. In a context of increasing anthropization at the interface between protected areas and rural communal areas in southern Africa, the multiplication of interactions between wildlife and livestock may generate conflicts such as competition for natural resources, predation, crop destruction by wildlife, or the risk of pathogen transmission. To better understand these potential contacts, we have developed a method combining remote sensing and spatial modelling to simulate the movements of domestic ruminants (cattle) and wild animals (buffaloes). Water surfaces and vegetation, identified as the main drivers of movement for these ungulate species (Rumiano et al., 2020), were derived from a series of Sentinel-2 satellite images. The resulting maps were then integrated into a mechanistic model of collective movement of interacting individuals (Gregoire et al., 2003), applied to buffaloes (Rumiano et al., 2021) and cattle. The model, tested at three study sites in Zimbabwe, simulates herd movements, the location of contact zones and their seasonal dynamics. Model results were compared with GPS collar location data from 34 individuals (16 buffalo and 18 cattle). The results show a high degree of spatial and seasonal variability in buffalo-cattle contacts in the three study areas, and a correspondence at landscape scale between the spatial extensions of modeled and observed contact zones. These results illustrate the potential of spatial modelling combined with remote sensing to simulate animal movements on a landscape scale, while offering possibilities for managing these interfaces through, for example, a coupling with epidemiological modelling, or the testing of different scenarios of changes (e.g., practices, environment, climate).

To study the impact of pesticide uses in agriculture on human health, data on the types and quantities of pesticide active substances introduced into the environment over a long period of time are needed. However, when there is no systematic or available written records of pesticide applications, the characterization of environmental contamination remains challenging. In this technical note, we propose a method to organize heterogeneous information to represent the spatial dynamics of pesticide uses, with the case of Guadeloupe, French West Indies. Based on various data sources (paper maps, digital geographic data, articles and technical reports, pesticide products information, interviews), different databases were built: i) a land use database (1969-2019), with maps of the main three groups of crops in Guadeloupe: banana, sugar cane and market gardening; ii) a database of agricultural practices regarding the use of pesticides and their evolution over time for these groups of crops; iii) a database of available active substances according to time. Homogenized datasets of banana, sugar cane and market gardening plots allow to visualize the crop distribution at different periods of time and the evolution trend of cultivated areas. The database on agricultural practices regarding the use of pesticide includes the description of different 'pesticide itineraries' - characterized by information on the cropping system and on the schedule of pesticide applications, and their evolution through time. The database on active substances includes two types of information: for each year since 1960, the characteristics of authorized active substances based on regulation, and of available active substances, based on farmers' practices in Guadeloupe. All databases are made available on an open data repository; they will be used to derive indicators of pesticide pressure and study the link between cancer cases and the presence of pesticides in the environment.

Acacia mearnsii, an invasive alien species, is the main resource identified for the energy transition initiated on Reunion Island. It is, therefore, critical to identify the existent forest stands within the island's large tropical forest area and to determine which of these stands are accessible for logging operations. In this study, a very high-spatial-resolution image was used to map forest (Acacia mearnsii, Acacia heterophylla, Cryptomeria japonica) and non-forest land cover. To identify the accessible forest stands, we developed a geographic information system (GIS) processing chain, accounting for barriers, the distribution of slopes, and the location of forest roads. User-defined parameters, such as the slope threshold and maximal distance to forest roads, allow different scenarios to be explored. The classification yields an overall accuracy of 88% and a Kappa index of 0.86 and highlights the areas occupied by the different types of Acacia. By applying the GIS processing chain for a standard scenario, the results show that only 19% of the initial study area of 637 ha of Acacia mearnsii patches is suitable for exploitation. In conclusion, our results demonstrate how remote sensing (RS) and GIS can be combined to provide valuable tools for forest managers to design management plans for invasive alien forest species.

Développé par le CIRAD et Marie Demarchi et propriété de la Direction Générale de la Santé (DGS), le logiciel ARBOCARTO est conçu comme une interface intuitive entre un modèle de dynamique de populations des moustiques du genre Aedes, responsables d'arboviroses et de fortes nuisances, et les acteurs impliqués dans la mise en place de stratégies d'actions de lutte antivectorielle et de prévention des maladies vectorielles (contributeurs au SI-LAV). A partir de données météorologiques quotidiennes et de données environnementales, le logiciel ARBOCARTO permet aux utilisateurs de cartographier, à une échelle spatiale fine, les densités de populations de moustiques Aedes. Depuis sa première version livrée à l'état de démonstrateur en 2019, l'outil a évolué vers une deuxième version opérationnelle en 2022 sur tous les territoires français (Territoires ultra marins et France hexagonale), avec l'intégration de nouvelles fonctionnalités pour simuler différentes actions de lutte antivectorielle (destruction mécaniste de gîtes de ponte, actions larvicides et adulticides). Suite à une demande de la DGS de poursuivre le développement de l'outil, l'équipe d'ARBOCARTO vient de produire une version 3, objet de ce rapport, qui intègre désormais un module de calcul du taux de reproduction de base (R0) pour le virus de la dengue, transmis par les moustiques Aedes. Les cartes de R0 produites par l'outil Arbocarto-v3 sur les différents sites montrent une bonne réactivité de l'indice simulé aux tendances spatiales et temporelles observées. Ces cartes de R0 offrent une information supplémentaire pour les acteurs de santé publique, en venant compléter les autres données de santé (en particulier du SI-LAV) dans le processus de prise de décision. D'autre part, durant le projet, deux sessions de formation au logiciel ARBOCARTO-V3, avec la documentation technique et les jeux de données d'entrée de l'outil mis à jour, ont été organisées en Martinique et à Montpellier, avec au total 38 participa

L'emploi des pesticides en agriculture présente un risque avéré pour la santé des utilisateurs et des populations (INSERM, 2021), risque dont la caractérisation est difficile, car les impacts des pesticides s'observent sur le long terme. Or, les usages sont variables dans le temps, au gré de la mise sur le marché ou du retrait des substances actives, mais aussi dans l'espace selon les pratiques d'épandage. Par ailleurs, les interactions spécifiques des molécules épandues avec le milieu conditionnent leur présence dans les différents compartiments de l'environnement. Ici, nous présentons AGRI-STAMP, un modèle organisant l'information hétérogène disponible pour représenter les dynamiques d'utilisation des pesticides et leur devenir, afin de produire des indicateurs de pression environnementale. Ce modèle, créé en Guadeloupe est particulièrement adapté aux conditions de l'île. Les systèmes agraires pluriannuels (majoritaires en termes de surface sur l'Île) sont simulés de manière à conserver une continuité temporelle et géographique des différentes surfaces agricoles au fils des années. Les systèmes annuels (maraîchage, etc.) sont également simulés de manière plus simpliste. Les itinéraires techniques moyens des différentes cultures présentes sur le territoire sont fournis au modèle afin que celui-ci simule les applications de pesticides sur le territoire à l'aide des cartes agricoles fournies. Les quantités appliquées sont enregistrées aux seins d'un carroyage “stock de pesticide dans le sol”. Ces quantités évoluent au fur et à mesure de la simulation en fonction des interactions entre les substances actives (temps de demi-vie “DT50” et coefficient de partage avec le carbone dans l'eau “Koc”) et leur environnement (sol et pluie). Finalement ce carroyage peut être agrégé à des échelles spatiales plus importantes (IRIS, bassin versant ...) pour le calcul de divers indicateurs. Le modèle de simulation de l'activité agricole Agri-STAMP produit de nombreuses données concernant l'emploi et le devenir des pesticides dans les sols et les eaux. L'exposé aborde la question du choix des variables représentatives de l'activité agricole à partir de ces données et pouvant contribuer à expliquer la répartition du taux d'incidence des cancers. La méthode proposée explore la variabilité spatiale et temporelle des variables produites par le modèle pour proposer des indicateurs candidats dans l'explication de l'incidence des cancers. Les résultats présentés résultent de l'agrégation des variables calculées à l'échelle locale (les carreaux) à celle de l'Iris. Ils montrent une forte variabilité spatiale de la présence moyenne des pesticides dans les eaux et les sols des années 1970 à nos jours. La répartition dans les sols dépend à la fois de l'intensité des apports et de la persistance des molécules employées (grande durée de demi-vie, forte interaction avec le sol). La répartition des cultures intensives (canne à sucre et banane) coïncide avec cette répartition. Le classement des molécules selon leur toxicité (Classe de toxicité créer par l'OMS et alignées sur les directives de la SGH, catégorisé en fonction de la valeur de la DL50, http://www.fao.org/3/i5566fr/i5566fr.pdf ) montre que les molécules avec le niveau de toxicité le plus important ont été employées dans les régions faiblement polluées. D'autre part, les dynamiques de contamination par les pesticides au cours du temps ont pu être retracées. Pour les stocks du sol, 3 types de dynamiques peuvent être identifiés : le 1er correspond à de fortes contaminations avant les années 1990 ; les 2e et 3e correspondent à des contaminations élevées à partie des années 80-90 et une baisse plus précoce pour le type 2 (1995) que pour le type 3 (2004). Afin d'étudier l'impact de l'utilisation des pesticides dans l'agriculture sur la santé humaine, des données sur les substances actives introduites dans l'environnement sont nécessaires. Cependant, en l'absence d'enregistrement systématique des traitements effectués, la caractérisation de la contamination de l'environnement par les pesticides demeure un défi. Le modèle Agri-STAMP (Spatial and TemporAl Modeling of Pesticide use in Agriculture) permet de simuler dans l'espace et le temps l'utilisation et le devenir des pesticides dans l'environnement. Pour produire les données d'entrée nécessaires à ce modèle, nous proposons une méthode pour représenter la dynamique spatiale des utilisations de pesticides en Guadeloupe, à partir de sources de données hétérogènes. A partir de différentes sources de données (cartes papier et numériques, articles, rapports techniques, informations sur les produits pesticides, enquêtes), différentes bases de données ont été construites : i) une base de données d'occupation des sols (1969-2019) pour les trois principaux systèmes de culture en Guadeloupe : banane, canne à sucre et maraîchage ; ii) une base de données sur les pratiques agricoles concernant l'utilisation des pesticides pour ces groupes de cultures ; iii) une base de données sur les substances actives disponibles. Les jeux de données homogénéisés des parcelles de banane, canne à sucre et maraîchage permettent de visualiser la répartition des cultures à différentes dates. La base de données sur les pratiques agricoles concernant l'utilisation des pesticides comprend la description de différents "itinéraires pesticides", caractérisés par des informations sur le système de culture et sur le calendrier des applications de pesticides, qui ont évolué au cours du temps. The recent expansion of Aedes albopictus across continents in both tropical and temperate regions and the exponential growth of dengue cases over the past 50 years represent a significant risk to human health. Although climate change is not the only factor responsible for the increase and spread of dengue cases worldwide, it might increase the risk of disease transmission at global and regional scale. Here we show that regional and local variations in climate can induce differential impacts on the abundance of Ae. albopictus. We use the instructive example of Réunion Island with its varied climatic and environmental conditions and benefiting from the availability of meteorological, climatic, entomological and epidemiological data. Temperature and precipitation data based on regional climate model simulations (3 km × 3 km) are used as inputs to a mosquito population model for three different climate emission scenarios. Our objective is to study the impact of climate change on the life cycle dynamics of Ae. albopictus in the 2070–2100 time horizon. Our results show the joint influence of temperature and precipitation on Ae. albopictus abundance as a function of elevation and geographical subregion. At low-elevations areas, decreasing precipitation is expected to have a negative impact on environmental carrying capacity and, consequently, on Ae. albopictus abundance. At mid- and high-elevations, decreasing precipitation is expected to be counterbalanced by a significant warming, leading to faster development rates at all life stages, and consequently increasing the abundance of this important dengue vector in 2070–2100.

The Ebola virus is the causing agent of Ebola virus disease (EVD), an emerging infectious disease that can reach a 90% mortality rate in infected populations. The largest epidemic took place in West Africa in 2014-2016, whereas previously outbreaks had been confined to Central Africa. Multiple ecological and social factors may interact to cause an Ebola virus outbreak. Increased human – wildlife contacts in degraded forests or modified landscapes may lead to a higher risk of outbreaks. In this study we combine ecological knowledge and Earth observation to model Ebola virus transmission in a bat species (Hypsignathus monstrosus) suspected to be a reservoir for the virus. Land use maps, derived from satellite images, and information on habitat use by bats were integrated to a spatially explicit model to study how land use changes may influence virus transmission in this species. We used land use maps from 2005 and 2015 of an area of approximately 190km2 in Guinea, where bat-human interactions are common, as a starting point for our simulations. During this period in the study area, forest area decreased while the surface of forest-agricultural mosaics and savannahs increased, reflecting a common landscape transformation in the region. Habitat use by bats was modeled based on previous and on on-going ecological studies on the species. Virus transmission among bats is more likely when groups of individuals come together, such as during roosting and foraging. To integrate this information into our model, we assigned indexes of habitat suitability to each land use for these two behaviors. Results of our simulations show how land use changes affect animal behavior of an Ebola virus host, and the impact this virus can have on transmission within host populations. Background: Dengue is the world's most prevalent mosquito-borne viral disease. It is endemic in many tropical and subtropical countries and represents a significant global health burden. The first reports of dengue virus (DENV) circulation in the South West Indian Ocean (SWIO) islands date back to the early 1940s; however, an increase in DENV circulation has been reported in the SWIO in recent years. The aim of this review is to trace the history of DENV in the SWIO islands using available records from the Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mayotte, Seychelles, and Reunion. We focus in particular on the most extensive data from Reunion Island, highlighting factors that may explain the observed increasing incidence, and the potential shift from one-off outbreaks to endemic dengue transmission. Methods: Following the PRISMA guidelines, the literature review focused queried different databases using the keywords “dengue” or “Aedes albopictus” combined with each of the following SWIO islands the Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mayotte, Seychelles, and Reunion. We also compiled case report data for dengue in Mayotte and Reunion in collaboration with the regional public health agencies in these French territories. References and data were discarded when original sources were not identified. We examined reports of climatic, anthropogenic, and mosquito-related factors that may influence the maintenance of dengue transmission independently of case importation linked to travel. Findings and conclusions: The first report of dengue circulation in the SWIO was documented in 1943 in the Comoros. Then not until an outbreak in 1976 to 1977 that affected approximately 80% of the population of the Seychelles. DENV was also reported in 1977 to 1978 in Reunion with an estimate of nearly 30% of the population infected. In the following 40-year period, DENV circulation was qualified as interepidemic with sporadic cases. However, in recent years, the region has experienced uninterrupted DENV

Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti mosquitoes have a worldwide distribution and, as main vectors of dengue, chikungunya and Zika viruses, constitute a threat for public health both in tropical and temperate regions. To better target surveillance and control of Aedes-borne diseases, there is a need for tools with the capacity to predict the spatially distributed dynamics of mosquito vectors at a local scale. In addition, to be used by public health authorities and vector control services, such tools need easy-to-use interfaces allowing a customization by the user according to the geographical and entomological contexts. " ARBOCARTO " is a spatial modeling tool based on a generic mosquito life cycle- based model, driven by meteorological variables (temperature and rainfall). Its implementation considers the landscape context described from very high spatial imagery and/or ancillary data provided by the user, and the different functionalities allow the user to test different scenarios, such as the impact on mosquito dynamics of prevention measures (e.g., reduction of the number of breeding sites) or control actions (e.g., pulverization of insecticides). We present its application in various geographical contexts. In highly diverse environments and latitudes, the comparison between the model outputs and observed entomological data demonstrated the ability of " ARBROCARTO " tool to provide valuable complementary information to existing entomological surveillance programs. Thanks to its user-friendly interface, " ARBOCARTO " could be adopted by a broad community of managers involved in vector control.
