Abstract

We study the effects of irradiating water with 3 MeV protons at high doses by observing the motion of charged polystyrene beads outside the proton beam. By single-particle tracking, we measure a radial velocity of the order of microns per second. Combining electrokinetic theory with simulations of the beam-generated reaction products and their outward diffusion, we find that the bead motion is due to electrophoresis in the electric field induced by the mobility contrast of cations and anions. This work sheds light on the perturbation of biological systems by high-dose radiations and paves the way for the manipulation of colloid or macromolecular dispersions by radiation-induced diffusiophoresis.

The Snowmass report on rare processes and precision measurements recommended Mu2e-II and a next generation muon facility at Fermilab (Advanced Muon Facility) as priorities for the frontier. The Workshop on a future muon program at FNAL was held in March 2023 to discuss design studies for Mu2e-II, organizing efforts for the next generation muon facility, and identify synergies with other efforts (e.g., muon collider). Topics included high-power targetry, status of R&D for Mu2e-II, development of compressor rings, FFA and concepts for muon experiments (conversion, decays, muonium and other opportunities) at AMF. Abstract

Differential cross sections at $t=t_{\text{min}}$ and decay asymmetries for the $\gamma p\rightarrow\phi p$ reaction have been measured using linearly polarized photons in the range 1.5 to 2.9 GeV. These cross sections were used to determine the Pomeron strength factor. The cross sections and decay asymmetries are consistently described by the $t$-channel Pomeron and pseudoscalar exchange model in the $E_{\gamma}$ region above 2.37 GeV. In the lower energy region, an excess over the model prediction is observed in the energy dependence of the differential cross sections at $t=t_{\text{min}}$. This observation suggests that additional processes or interference effects between Pomeron exchange and other processes appear near the threshold region., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

This paper presents the influence of electron elastic scattering models, electron thermalization models, and chemical parameters on Geant4-DNA simulations of liquid water radiolysis under mega-electron-volt electron irradiation. The radiochemical yields are simulated using a new Geant4-DNA example. In particular, the influence of the new elastic scattering model recently developed is presented as well as the influence of improved electron thermalization models. The influence of a new chemistry constructor using parameters of another Monte Carlo track structure code is also described. The results calculated using these different models are compared with each other and with experimental data. For sub-mega-electron-volt electron simulations, the combination of the "G4EmDNAPhysics_option2" physics constructor with the recently developed elastic scattering model, the Meesungnoen electron thermalization model, and the "G4EmDNAChemistry_option1" chemistry constructor is recommended. Abstract

The biological effects of ionizing radiation at the cellular level are frequently studied using the well-known formalism of microdosimetry, which provides a quantitative description of the stochastic aspects of energy deposition in irradiated media. Energy deposition can be simulated using Monte Carlo codes, some adopting a computationally efficient condensed-history approach, while others follow a more detailed track-structure approach. In this work, we present the simulation of microdosimetry spectra and related quantities (frequency-mean and dose-mean lineal energies) for incident monoenergetic electrons (50 eV-10 keV) in spheres of liquid water with dimensions comparable to the size of biological targets: base pairs (2 nm diameter), nucleosomes (10 nm), chromatin fibres (30 nm) and chromosomes (300nm). Simulations are performed using the condensed-history low-energy physics models ("Livermore" and "Penelope") and the track-structure Geant4-DNA physics models, available in the Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation toolkit. The spectra are compared and the influence of simulation parameters and different physics models, with emphasis on recent developments, is discussed, underlining the suitability of Geant4-DNA models for microdosimetry simulations. It is further shown that with an appropriate choice of simulation parameters, condensed-history transport may yield reasonable results for sphere sizes as small as a few tens of a nanometer. Abstract

This study presents new parameters for proton ionisation cross sections in guanine, adenine, thymine, and cytosine based upon the semi-empirical Rudd model. The same model was used to find differential electron cross sections considering a speed scaling procedure. To accelerate computation, the total electron cross sections were obtained using the binary-encounter-Bethe approximation instead of the integrated Rudd formula. The cross sections were implemented in the Geant4 simulation toolkit as Geant4-DNA processes, and simulations were carried out measuring protons lineal energies in spherical micrometric volumes filled with water, adenine, thymine, guanine, and cytosine. Large differences were seen in the lineal energies evaluated for the different materials, with the lineal energy measured in guanine being sometimes twice that of water. This suggests that the cross sections developed here should be considered in biological simulations where cellular substructures are modelled, in contrast to the current approach which approximates these volumes as consisting of liquid water. Abstract

We report direct and unambiguous evidence of the existence of inner semiconducting tube (ISCT) photoluminescence (PL) from measurements performed on four individual freestanding index-identified double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs). Based on thorough Rayleigh scattering, Raman scattering, and PL experiments, we are able to demonstrate that the ISCT PL is observed with a quantum yield estimated to be a few 10-6 independent of the semiconducting or metallic nature of the outer tube. This result is mainly attributed to ultrafast exciton transfer from the inner to outer tube. Furthermore, by carrying out PL excitation experiments on the (14, 1)@(15, 12) DWNT, we show that the ISCT PL can be detected through the optical excitation of the outer tube, indicating that the exciton transfer can also occur in the opposite way.

19. Automated generation of burnup chain for reactor analysis applications

Abstract

This paper presents the development of an automated generation of burnup chain for reactor analysis applications. Algorithms are proposed to reevaluate decay modes, branching ratios and effective fission product (FP) cumulative yields of a given list of important FPs taking into account intermediate reactions. A new burnup chain is generated using the updated data sources taken from the JENDL FP decay data file 2011 and Fission yields data file 2011. The new burnup chain is output according to the format for the SRAC code system. Verification has been performed to evaluate the accuracy of the new burnup chain. The results show that the new burnup chain reproduces well the results of a reference one with 193 fission products used in SRAC. Burnup calculations using the new burnup chain have also been performed based on UO2and MOX fuel pin cells and compared with a reference chain th2cm6fp193bp6T.

Abstract

Gold Nanoparticles (GNPs) have recently gained a lot of attention due to their potential benefit to improve the efficacy of X-ray radiotherapy. Owing to their high atomic number, GNPs are able to absorb higher quantities of incident radiation with respect to the surrounding tissue, producing, in particular, photoelectrons and low energy Auger electrons. These additional low energy electrons increase the local energy deposition in the region surrounding the GNP. Monte Carlo simulations play a key role in the investigation of GNP radio-enhancement and it is widely recognised that track structure physics models are the state-of-the-art for nano-scale studies. In 2016, we have developed track structure physics models for the Geant4-DNA toolkit allowing electron transport for microscopic bulk gold (Geant4_DNA_AU_2016) and we have recently improved them in the low energy domain (Geant4_DNA_AU_2018). In this paper, we report the benchmarking of these newly developed physics models when calculating the physical dose and the Dose Enhancement Factor (DEF) around a GNP. We demonstrate that Geant4_DNA_AU_2018 models give similar azimuthal distribution of two dimensional absorbed dose around a single GNP, but result in larger absorbed dose and DEF than Geant4_DNA_AU_2016 models. In parallel, we investigated the performance of a newly developed multiple scattering model in Geant4 based on the Goudsmit-Saunderson (GS) model, when used together with the electromagnetic physics models with the Geant4 Livermore condensed-history approach. Our results show that the GS model does not affect the results of the simulations when studying GNP radio-enhancement with a condensed-history approach.

Abstract

The advancement of multidisciplinary research fields dealing with ionising radiation induced biological damage - radiobiology, radiation physics, radiation protection and, in particular, medical physics - requires a clear mechanistic understanding of how cellular damage is induced by ionising radiation. Monte Carlo (MC) simulations provide a promising approach for the mechanistic simulation of radiation transport and radiation chemistry, towards the in silico simulation of early biological damage. We have recently developed a fully integrated MC simulation that calculates early single strand breaks (SSBs) and double strand breaks (DSBs) in a fractal chromatin based human cell nucleus model. The results of this simulation are almost equivalent to past MC simulations when considering direct/indirect strand break fraction, DSB yields and fragment distribution. The simulation results agree with experimental data on DSB yields within 13.6% on average and fragment distributions agree within an average of 34.8%.

Abstract

International audience; Generally, various models can be used to describe a given application domain on different aspects and thus give rise to several views. To have a complete view of the application domain, heterogeneous models need to be unified, which is a hard task to do. To tackle this problem, we have proposed a method to relate partial models without combining them in a single model. In our approach, partial models are organized as a network of models through a virtual global model called M1C (Model of correspondences between models) which conforms to a ubiquitous language based on a Meta-Model of Correspondences (MMC). This paper presents an application of our method to an “Emergency Department” case study. It has been performed as a collaborative process involving model designers and a supervisor. The focus is put on the building of the M1C model from 3 partial models.

33. A dengue outbreak on a floating village at Cat Ba Island in Vietnam

Abstract

Background: A dengue outbreak in an ecotourism destination spot in Vietnam, from September to November 2013, impacted a floating village of fishermen on the coastal island of Cat Ba. The outbreak raises questions about how tourism may impact disease spread in rural areas. Methods: Epidemiological data were obtained from the Hai Phong Preventive Medical Center (PMC), including case histories and residential location from all notified dengue cases from this outbreak. All household addresses were geo-located. Knox test, a spatio-temporal analysis that enables inference dengue clustering constrained by space and time, was performed on the geocoded locations. From the plasma available from two patients, positive for Dengue serotype 3 virus (DENV3), the Envelope (E) gene was sequenced, and their genetic relationships compared to other E sequences in the region. Results: Of 192 dengue cases, the odds ratio of contracting dengue infections for people living in the floating villages compared to those living on the island was 4.9 (95 % CI: 3.6-6.7). The space-time analyses on 111 geocoded dengue residences found the risk of dengue infection to be the highest within 4 days and a radius of 20 m of a given case. Of the total of ten detected clusters with an excess risk greater than 2, the cluster with the highest number of cases was in the floating village area (24 patients for a total duration of 31 days). Phylogenetic analysis revealed a high homology of the two DENV3 strains (genotype III) from Cat Ba with DENV3 viruses circulating in Hanoi in the same year (99.1 %). Conclusions: Our study showed that dengue transmission is unlikely to be sustained on Cat Ba Island and that the 2013 epidemic likely originated through introduction of viruses from the mainland, potentially Hanoi. These findings suggest that prevention efforts should be focused on mainland rather than on the island.

Abstract

Abstract: In this paper, we describe simulations of highly rectifying carbon/p‐Si junctions using Sentaurus TCAD from Synopsys. 2‐D and 3‐D models were constructed and optimized to fit I‐V characteristics measured from these junctions. The TCAD models included a resistive interface layer, previously observed experimentally. From the model, the interface resistance was determined to be 0.04 Ω·cm2, and the work function of the graphitic contacts was determined to be 4.43 eV. The latter is the work function at the interface, which cannot be measured experimentally. Schottky barrier lowering was implemented in the model to provide agreement with the measurements. The modeling provided information that could not be obtained from measurements and suggested a path to improved devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Prion diseases are prototypical conformational diseases. From a medicinal chemistry point of view, all conformational diseases are ‘black boxes’ because the three-dimensional structure and the mechanistic properties of the target are not fully available. Although reliable proof-of-principle was demonstrated in a variety of experimental models, and several small molecules have been identified as active against TSE [Trevitt, 2006], the molecular mechanism of action for most of these molecules remains largely unexplored. Thus, it emerges that the rational design of antiprion compounds is still a big challenge. In an effort to rationally discover antiprion lead compounds, we envisaged the planar 2,5-bis-diamino-benzoquinone and 3,6-dimethylenepiperazine-2,5-dione scaffolds as privileged motifs in modulating PPIs in prions. Building on these two fragments as appropriate spacers, we designed two series of symmetrical bifunctional ligands that effectively inhibited prion replication in ScGT1 cells [Tran, 2010; Bolognesi, 2010]. In particular, we reported that the Phe-benzoquinone conjugate 1 exhibited remarkable anti-prion activity in a cellular model (EC50 = 0.87 M) [Tran, 2010]. This allowed us to propose that the benzoquinone might be considered a promising central core in the search for novel multitarget anti-prion compounds. Starting from these results, a further library featuring a central BQ nucleus, with two spacers in position 2 and 5 connected to two terminal moieties, was designed. Some of the library entries showed significant inhibition against PrPSc aggregation in ScGT1 cell line. Notably, 6-chloro-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroacridine 2 displayed an EC50 of 0.17 μM, which was lower than that of the reference compound quinacrine. More importantly, 2 possessed the capability to contrast prion fibril formation and oxidative stress, together with a low cytotoxicity [Bongarzone, 2010]. These results validate our design rationale as a viable strategy for the identification of novel lead compounds with more than one activity against prion diseases.

Modeling the radio-induced effects in biological medium still requires accurate physics models to describe the interactions induced by all the charged particles present in the irradiated medium in detail. These interactions include inelastic as well as elastic processes. To check the accuracy of the very low energy models recently implemented into the GEANT4 toolkit for modeling the electron slowing-down in liquid water, the simulation of electron dose point kernels remains the preferential test. In this context, we here report normalized radial dose profiles, for mono-energetic point sources, computed in liquid water by using the very low energy GEANT4-DNA physics processes available in the GEANT4 toolkit. Abstract

An accurate modeling of radial energy deposition around ion tracks is a key requirement of radiation transport software used for simulations in radiobiology at the sub-cellular scale. The work presented in this paper is part of the on-going benchmarking of the "Geant4-DNA" physics processes and models, which are available in the Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation toolkit for the low energy transport of particles in liquid water. We present for the first time radial dose distributions of incident ion tracks simulated with "Geant4-DNA". Simulation results are compared to other results available in the literature, obtained from analytical calculations, step-by-step Monte Carlo simulations and measurements. They show a reasonable agreement with reference data.
