Dengue neurological disease is an uncommon yet severe complication of dengue infection. It can manifest as encephalitis, encephalopathy, neuro-ophthalmic complications, or neuromuscular disorders. Severe infection can result in viral shedding across multiple body sites. We describe a case of severe neuro-ophthalmic dengue infection in an otherwise healthy returned traveller, presenting with prolonged multiple-body-site viral detections by PCR. The dengue virus (DENV) dynamics and serological response support a direct DENV neuropathogenicity. A retrospective review of the laboratory data at the Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory (VIDRL) suggests that blood is the most frequent sample type with DENV detection (92% of all DENV-positive samples). Genotype variation is seen across different sample types. The similarity of CSF and nasopharyngeal DENV subtypes (genotype 1 and 3) suggests a possible correlation between nasopharyngeal replication and neurological complications. The case presented highlights the direct neuropathogenicity of DENV early in the course of infection, and a potential correlation between nasopharyngeal replication and neurological disease. In 2017, influenza seasonal activity was high in the southern hemisphere. We present interim influenza vaccine effectiveness (VE) estimates from Australia. Adjusted VE was low overall at 33% (95% confidence interval (CI): 17 to 46), 50% (95% CI: 8 to 74) for A(H1)pdm09, 10% (95% CI: -16 to 31) for A(H3) and 57% (95% CI: 41 to 69) for influenza B. For A(H3), VE was poorer for those vaccinated in the current and prior seasons.

The CRISPR/Cas9 system is a powerful tool for gene editing and it has become increasingly important for biology students to understand this emerging technique. Most CRISPR laboratory teaching modules use complex metazoan systems or mammalian cell culture which can be expensive. Here, we present a lab module that engages students in learning the fundamentals of CRISPR/Cas9 methodology using the simple and inexpensive model system, "Saccharomyces cerevisiae." Students use CRISPR/Cas9 and nonhomologous end joining to generate frameshift insertion and deletion mutations in the CAN1 gene, which are easily selected for using media plates that have canavanine. DNA sequencing is also performed to determine what type of mutation occurred in gene-edited cells. This easy to implement set of experiments has been run as both a 5-week and a shorter 3-week lab module. Learning assessments demonstrate increased understanding in CRISPR-related concepts as well as increased confidence using molecular techniques. Thus, this CRISPR/Cas9 lab module can be added to an existing Genetics, Microbiology, or Molecular Biology lab course to help undergraduate students learn current gene editing techniques with limited effort and cost.

The integration of complex oxides with a wide range of functionalities on conventional semiconductor platforms is highly demanded for functional applications. Despite continuous efforts to integrate complex oxides on Si, it is still challenging to harvest epitaxial layers using standard deposition processes. Here, a novel method is demonstrated to create high‐quality complex heterostructures on Si integrated with SrTiO3 membranes as a universal platform. The STO membrane successfully bridges a broad spectrum of complex heterostructures such as SrNbO3, SrVO3, TiO2, and dichalcogenide 2D superconducting FeSe toward semiconducting wafers (Si). Through electronic structures measured by angle‐resolved photoemission spectroscopy, the high quality and functionality of the heterostructures are verified. Coercive control (CC) is a core facet of intimate partner violence (IPV) and involves asserting power, dominance, and control over another person. Although the adverse impacts of childhood exposure to interparental IPV have been well documented, the outcomes of childhood exposure to interparental CC have not been systematically examined. This study aimed to address this gap by reviewing available empirical evidence on interparental CC and child and family outcomes. Articles were identified by searching electronic databases using keywords relating to CC, children and parents, and child wellbeing outcomes. The final review included 51 studies that reported on adverse outcomes pertaining to parenting and family relationships (k = 29), child internalizing and externalizing problems (k = 7), social-emotional development (k = 5), and physical/health development (k = 17). Specifically, studies reported that CC was associated with increased parental psychopathology, poorer family functioning, harsher parenting and higher levels of child abuse, strained parent–child relationships, children used as tools and co-victims of CC, increased risk of child internalizing and externalizing problems, limited socializing opportunities, increased bullying, poorer perinatal outcomes, limited access to healthcare, and increased risk of child mortality. Evidence identified CC as a unique contributor to adverse child wellbeing outcomes, independent of exposure to IPV more broadly. Results indicated that the impacts of childhood exposure to CC are complex, far reaching, and, in some cases, devastating.
