Abstract

A relatively low-cost homemade diode laser fluorimeter can be used in the chemistry teaching laboratory to measure the concentration of a dye dissolved in methanol. The instrument can be used to monitor the oxidative decomposition of Nile blue A by the active ingredient in laundry bleach, sodium hypochlorite. Principles involved in laser use and fluorescence are discussed.

Abstract

Novel phosphine-catalyzed [4+2] annulation processes are developed that have enabled regio-differentiating syntheses of cyclohexenes. The switching of the catalyst from hexamethylphosphorous triamide (HMPT) to a triarylphosphine has changed the reactivity of the [alpha]-alkylallenoate from that of a 1,4-dipole to an inverted dipole.

Abstract

[reaction: see text] An application of the phosphine-catalyzed [4 + 2] annulation in the formal synthesis of alstonerine and macroline is reported. A phosphine-catalyzed [4 + 2] reaction between imine 7a and allene 8 formed the D ring of the target indole alkaloids. A subsequent intramolecular Friedel-Crafts acylation provided the C ring of the bridged tetracycle. Deprotection, followed by methylation of the bridged nitrogen, deoxygenation of the C6 ketone, and reduction of the C16 carbethoxy group provided the previously known intermediate 3.
