The article focuses on the photographic works of Angus McBean in the theaters in Great Britain. His career as a photographer for legendary productions such as of William Shakespeare, George Bernard Shaw, and Oscar Wilde has contributed much in the country's theatrical era from the 1930's to the 1960's. McBean has imposed a distinct style of photography that is greatly influenced by the arts-and-crafts aestheticism of Liberty's. His photography has then gained much attention to some of the prominent photographers that led it to mere publicity. It has been noted that the producers and managers of theatrical productions have used McBean's pictures mainly for commercial purposes to lure people walking outside the theaters

Galvos smegenųtrauma (GST) yra vienas dažniausių neurologiniųsutrikimų. Iš visųGST 90 % yra lengvos, jųdažnis siekia 100-300/100 000 kasmet. Intrakranijinės lengvos galvos smegenųtraumos (LGST) komplikacijos nėra dažnos (10 %). Labai retai prireikia neurochirurginės intervencijos (1 %), tačiau tai gali būti pavojinga gyvybei (mirtingumas -0,1 %). Taigi, tikroji gydymo problema kyla dėl poreikio išsiaiškinti nedidelę gyvybei grėsmingos komplikacijos galimybę dideliam pacientųskaičiui. 2002 m. EFNS nuorodose taikytas geriausio ąrodymo požiūris, remiantis literatūra iki 2001 m. nurodant pradiną gydymą, KT indikacijas, hospitalizavimą ir pacientų, patyrusių LGST, stebėjimą. šios atnaujintos EFNS nuorodos siūlo selektyvesnę KT atlikimo taktiką, esant didiesiems (pavojingas traumos mechanizmas, GKS < 15 balų, GKS vertės sumažėjimas 2 balais, klinikiniai kaukolės (pamato) l ūžio požymiai, vėmimas, gydymas antikoaguliantais, potrauminiai traukuliai) ar mažiesiems (amžius, sąmonės netekimas, išliekanti anterogradinė amnezija, židininiai simptomai, galvos sumušimas, GKS balųblogėjimas) rizikos veiksniams. Nuorodos paremtos publikuotais sprendimais, esant aukštam ąrodymųlygiui. Be to, dabar egzistuoja rekomendacijos dėl KT atlikimo vaikams. Nors ir su žemesniu ąrodymųlygiu, pateikiamos nuorodos dėl klinikinio stebėjimo ligoninėje, siekiant išvengti galimųpavojingųkomplikacijų, ąskaitant elgesio sutrikimus (amnezija, sumišimas ir neramumas) ir infekciją. Introduction: Electroencephalography (EEG) is a non-invasive investigation method playing an important role in differential diagnostics of seizures. In this article authors point out to its importance, but also limitations., Material and Methods: Native interictal EEG findings were evaluated in inpatients after solitary unprovoked epileptic seizures (n=84), patients with sporadic epileptic seizures (n=179), patients with "chronic" epilepsy (n=324), outpatients with epilepsy (n=300), patients with syncope (n=100), patients with neurocardiogenic syncope (n=70), patients with migraine (n=100) and patients with tetanic syndrome (n=100). EEG findings were evaluated as normal or abnormal and abnormal findings were further divided into epileptic and non-epileptic, focal and generalized., Results: In native EEG, epileptic manifestations were registered in 14.29 % of patients after solitary unprovoked epileptic seizures, in 25.7 % of patients with sporadic epileptic seizures, in 37.34 % of patients with chronic epilepsy and in 32 % of outpatients with epilepsy. Interictal EEG abnormalities (epileptiform and non-epileptiform) in non-epileptic diagnoses were at least registered in patients with syncope, but also in this group abnormal findings occurred in 30 % of them. We registered epileptiform abnormalities in 5 % of patients with migraine, in 4 % of patients with tetanic syndrome and in 2 % of patients with syncope., Conclusion: The diagnosis of epilepsy and non-epileptic seizures is a only a clinical diagnosis. EEG is a very important investigational method in this group of patients, but still only additional (Tab. 4, Fig. 2, Ref. 14).

Objective: Lyme borreliosis (LB) is the most disseminated tick-borne disease in the Northern hemisphere, and infestation with ticks is one of the essential factors influencing transmission of the disease to humans. This work intends to compare the occurrence of borrelia circulating in indigenous ticks and in patients suffering from neurological diseases., Materials & Methods: The total of 660 nymphs and 567 adult ticks from the Bratislava and Košice areas was examined over the years 2001-2004, and the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 82 neurological patients suffering from suspected Lyme borreliosis infection was investigated in the 2007-2009 period, using the polymerase chain reaction method (PCR)., Results: PCR investigation proved presence of borrelia in 23.3% of the total 1227 ticks; of these, co-infection was found in 2.7% of all ticks. Borrelia garinii (9.9%) and B. valaisaina (9.2%) were the prevalent types. PCR investigation of the CSF samples of 32 patients with clinically diagnosed Lyme borreliosis showed the presence of B. burgdorferi s.l. in 17 cases. Positive results were found also in patients with unclear or different diagnoses. In cases where the genospecies could be identified, B. garinii was most frequently found (8x), followed with B. burgdorferi s.s. (4×) and B. afzelii (3×)., Conclusions: The high infestation level of ticks with borrelia, mainly with B. garinii which is the most-often documented borrelia species identified in neurological patients, is indicative of a high risk of this contamination in Slovakia. B. garinii were found also in our neuroborreliosis patients, whereas their proof in the CSF of patients with suspected neuroborreliosis or with a different clinical diagnosis pointed upon their persistence after an infectious experience. However, knowledge of not only the genospecies but also of the genotypes capable of eliciting an invasive disorder would be necessary for better clarification of the relationship between borrelia and their peccant capacity. Identification of the invasive borrelia types circulating in nature, and clarification of the vector vs. human infection incidence relationship is of importance from the aspect of detailed knowledge of the epidemiology of this disease.

The work describes three cases of patients at various ages, diagnosed for CNS demyelinating disease. The presence of specific antibodies to B. burgdorferi sensu lato, and findings of B. burgdorferi s.l. DNA, identified in one case as the genospecies B. garinii in the liquor, indicated previous experience with the infection. Presumably, persistence of borrelia in the organism could act as one of the autoimmune process triggers, resulting in the demyelinating disease.

Hyperglycaemia-induced oxidative stress makes an important contribution to the aetiology of diabetic neuropathy. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effect of the antioxidant stobadine (STB) in comparison with a treatment by a high-dose of alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), on the neurological consequences of chronic hyperglycaemia in an animal model of diabetes in Wistar rats (16 weeks old), made diabetic by streptozotocin (STZ 3 x 20 mg i.v.). Neuropathy was evaluated electrophysiologically by measuring motor nerve conduction velocity (NCV) in the 4th and 8th week in vivo and motor NCV and resistance to ischaemic conduction failure (RICF) of the sciatic nerve in the 10th week of the experiment in vitro. The therapy with ALA (100 mg/kg i.p., 5 times a week) and STB (25 mg/kg i.p., 5 times a week) had a significant effect on NCV in vivo in the 8th week of the experiment and no effect in the 10th week in vitro. The RICF elevated in diabetic animals was significantly modified by ALA. The effect of the antioxidant STB on NCV was comparable with that of ALA, while RICF was affected only by ALA. We conclude that treatment with appropriate antioxidants might partially prevent nerve dysfunction in diabetic rats.

Unlabelled: The aim of this paper is to analyze the results of correlation of clinical symptoms and their characteristics with the results of neurophysiologic, neuropsycologic investigations and short genetic analyses in patients with Idiopathic Parkinson's disease (IPD)., Material and Methods: The paper is a prospective and retrospective study of 15 IPD patients and 25 patients with different forms of parkinsonism., Results: Patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease had all cardinal symptoms characteristic for the disease: tremor, rigidity and reduced postural reflexes in 100%., Conclusion: Clinical, neurophysiologic, neuropsychologic and neuroimaging methods of investigations showed changes that are nonspecific in proportions corresponding to those in available literature (Tab. 3, Fig. 2, Ref. 11).
