Abstract

Motivated by recent experimental initiatives, such as at the Helmholtz International Beamline for Extreme Fields (HIBEF) at the European X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL), we calculate the birefringent scattering of x-rays at the combined field of two optical (or near-optical) lasers and compare various scenarios. In order to facilitate an experimental detection of quantum vacuum diffraction and birefringence, special emphasis is placed on scenarios where the difference between the initial and final x-ray photons is maximized. Apart from their polarization, these signal and background photons may differ in propagation direction (corresponding to scattering angles in the mrad regime) and possibly energy., Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure

3. Friction of viscoelastic elastomers with rough surfaces under torsional contact conditions

Abstract

Frictional properties of contacts between a smooth viscoelastic rubber and rigid surfaces are investigated using a torsional contact configuration where a glass lens is continuously rotated on the rubber surface. From the inversion of the displacement field measured at the surface of the rubber, spatially resolved values of the steady state frictional shear stress are determined within the non homogeneous pressure and velocity fields of the contact. For contacts with a smooth lens, a velocity dependent but pressure independent local shear stress is retrieved from the inversion. On the other hand, the local shear stress is found to depend both on velocity and applied contact pressure when a randomly rough (sand blasted) glass lens is rubbed against the rubber surface. As a result of changes in the density of micro-asperity contacts, the amount of light transmitted by the transparent multi-contact interface is observed to vary locally as a function of both contact pressure and sliding velocity. Under the assumption that the intensity of light transmitted by the rough interface is proportional to the proportion of area into contact, it is found that the local frictional stress can be expressed experimentally as the product of a purely velocity dependent term, $k(v)$, by a term representing the pressure and velocity dependence of the actual contact area, $A/A_0$. A comparison between $k(v)$ and the frictional shear stress of smooth contacts suggests that nanometer scale dissipative processes occurring at the interface predominate over viscoelastic dissipation at micro-asperity scale.

Abstract

Systemic amyloid A (AA) amyloidosis is highly prevalent (34%) in endangered island foxes (Urocyon littoralis) and poses a risk to species recovery. Although elevated serum AA (SAA) from prolonged or recurrent inflammation predisposes to AA amyloidosis, additional risk factors are poorly understood. Here we define the severity of glomerular and medullary renal amyloid and identify risk factors for AA amyloidosis in 321 island foxes necropsied from 1987 through 2010. In affected kidneys, amyloid more commonly accumulated in the medullary interstitium than in the glomeruli (98% [n= 78 of 80] vs 56% [n= 45], respectively;P< .0001), and medullary deposition was more commonly severe (19% [n= 20 of 105]) as compared with glomeruli (7% [n= 7];P= .01). Univariate odds ratios (ORs) of severe renal AA amyloidosis were greater for short- and long-term captive foxes as compared with free-ranging foxes (ORs = 3.2, 3.7, respectively; overall P= .05) and for females as compared with males (OR = 2.9;P= .05). Multivariable logistic regression revealed that independent risk factors for amyloid development were increasing age class (OR = 3.8;P< .0001), San Clemente Island subspecies versus San Nicolas Island subspecies (OR = 5.3;P= .0003), captivity (OR = 5.1;P= .0001), and nephritis (OR = 2.3;P= .01). The increased risk associated with the San Clemente subspecies or captivity suggests roles for genetic as well as exogenous risk factors in the development of AA amyloidosis.

27. SUCCESSFUL IN VITRO EMBRYO PRODUCTION WITH OOCYTES ASPIRATED FROM LIVE WHITE-TAILED DEER (Odocoileus virginianus texanus) DONNORS UNDER CAPTIVITY IN NORTHEAST MÉXICO

Abstract

Assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs), such as artificial insemination, semen sorting and freezing, embryo production in vivo and in vitro, are all methods in which animal reproduction management of several species has become considerably more efficient. These ARTs have been applied both in domestic and wild ruminants. In this study, in vitro embryo production was attempted with oocytes collected surgically during the mating season, from live white-tailed deer (WTD) hinds, maintained under captivity, in Northeast México. The study was conducted in two WTD farms nearby Cd. Victoria, Tamps., México, and another WTD farm located in Guerrero Coahuila, México. The laboratory work was carried at the Centro de Desarrollo de la Capacidad Productiva y Mejoramiento Genético de la Ganadería, property of the Unión Ganadera Regional de Tamaulipas (Centro-UGRT). The deer hinds are kept in captivity year-around, with feeding and health management provided accordingly to their requirements (50-60 kg females). Fresh green forage and clean fresh water is supplied daily. Oocytes were collected on each farm, while the hinds were maintained under general anesthesia and by means of a mid-ventral laparotomy, ovaries were exposed and follicles greater than 1-2 mm were aspirated with a 20 G needle, connected by a two-way plastic and latex hose to a vacum machine (WTA, Brazil); the oocytes were collected into a 50 ml. centrifuge tube containing wash media with heparine (Vitrogen, Brazil). Each oocyte collection lasted approximately 20 minutes, after which and while still on the farm, the oocytes were filtered with 50 µ mesh filters and rinsed several times with wash media, then placed on search Petri plates. Oocytes were then counted and classified (total, viable and non-viable oocytes) and placed into cryovials with maturation media (3 ml. MIV, Vitrogen, Brazil) and placed into a portable incubator with 5 % CO2 gas mix (LabiMixWTA, Brazil), after all hinds were done, oocytes were transported to the in vitro fertilization laboratory (IVF Lab) at the Centro-UGRT. Once at the IVF Lab, the oocytes were placed on a larger incubator (Eve, WTA, Brazil) and kept there for 18-20 hours, after which, the MIV media was changed for fertilization media (FIV, Vitrogen, Brazil) and fertilization was initiated by adding 10,000-12,000 live sperm per cryovial, and incubated for an additional period of 24 hours; after which, FIV media was replaced by the same media and at this point, cleavage rate was estimated by counting the oocytes that initiated cell división. At 72 hours after cell division started, fertilization rate was estimated; and 7 days after, the blastocysts were counted and classified. The whole process of oocyte maturation and embryo production in vitro, was conducted based on a beef cattle embryo production system and adapted to a deer embryo production system using media for small ruminants (Vitrogen, Brazil). Data collected per hind included total number of oocytes, viable and non-viable oocytes, cleavage rate (ratio of viable oocytes that initiated cell division over viable oocytes), fertilization rate (ratio of embryos that initiated cleavage over those that continued development to the blastocyst stage) and blastocyst rate (embryos reaching the blastocyst stage over cleaved embryos); averages were calculted for each parameter. The main results from this study on a per hind basis for total viable and non-viable oocytes were 9.8, 6.3 and 4.5, respectively; cleavage and blastocyst rates were 39.5 and 36.8, respectively and 2.3 blastocysts. In conclusión, oocyte collection from live WTD hinds and in vitro embryo production was succesfully done under farming conditions in Northeast México.

Abstract

Objective: The International Society of Nephrology/Renal Pathology Society classification is the gold standard for the characterisation of lupus nephritis (LN) on renal biopsy, with therapeutic repercussions. Its recent revision simplified the current class subdivisions, eliminating the S/G forms of class IV, although data on a possible pathogenetic/clinical value of this subdivision are still contradictory. Methods: 353 renal biopsies from Belimumab International Study in LN were assessed through central pathology review. Univariate logistic models and a decision tree were performed on 314 adequate biopsies to evaluate the impact of histological features on focal/diffuse classes. Removing class I/II (n=6) and € pure' class V (n=34), principal component analysis (PCA) and heatmap were used to explore similarities among III, IVS and IVG biopsies either incorporating or not the mixed classes (+V, n=274). Finally, a method aimed at partitioning the cases into k clusters based on their similarity (KMeans), was used to study features from the cohort of € pure' class III/IVS/IVG cases (n=214) to determine alternative subdivisions based on phenotypic data. Results: Segmental endocapillary hypercellularity (EH) was prevalent in class III, global EH, wire loops, hyaline thrombi and double contours were hallmarks of class IVG, with IVS cases showing intermediate characteristics. Heatmap and PCA confirmed the segregation of these features among classes, showing better segregation for focal/diffuse LN as compared with the mixed classes (+V). KMeans revealed the presence of two main clusters, membranoproliferative-like (n=83) or vasculitis-like (n=131). Conclusions: This study reveals new phenotypic forms of LN surpassing the traditional classes as determined by the current classification. Future validation and confirmation are required to confirm these findings.

32. Aprendizaje organizacional y su influencia en el desempeño de PyMES comerciales de México

Abstract

El objetivo de la presente investigación es identificar la influencia del aprendizaje organizacional (AO) en el desempeño organizacional (DO) de pequeñas y medianas empresas del sector comercial en Ciudad Obregón, Sonora; México. Mediante una investigación cuantitativa con un diseño no experimental transeccional, se aplicó un cuestionario con un total de 43 ítems a 136 empresas. Los resultados muestran que existe una influencia positiva y significativa del AO en el DO de PyMES comerciales. Se concluye que al interior de las organizaciones estudiadas se presenta un proceso de adquisición, distribución e intercambio de conocimiento mediante el aprendizaje e incluso este suele pasar a formar parte de la misma como memoria organizacional.

CIES2020 - XVII Congresso Ibérico e XIII Congresso Ibero-americano de Energia Solar RESUMEN: La disponibilidad de herramientas que permitan realizar estudios de viabilidad en proyectos de energía solar térmica para procesos industriales (SHIP), de manera rápida, precisa y con bajo coste, es crítica para la aceptación de esta tecnología por el sector industrial. Las herramientas surgidas en respuesta a esta demanda son muy heterogéneas, lo que dificulta la comparación de proyectos. Esta disparidad limita el desarrollo comercial de la tecnología al generar incertidumbre en empresas promotoras y entidades financieras. En este artículo se presenta una metodología para unificar los esfuerzos que se están llevando a cabo para el desarrollo de estas herramientas de simulación. La metodología propuesta combina la utilización de código abierto y privado. De esta forma se garantiza un desarrollo conjunto y continuado por universidades y centros público/privados, además de permitir a empresas privadas su utilización, manteniendo privada cualquier información sensible. ABSTRACT: The availability of tools capable of performing pre-feasibility studies of Solar Heat for Industrial Processes (SHIP) projects in a fast, precise, and low cost way has become necessary for the acceptance of this technology by the industrial sector. The tools that have emerged so far are very heterogeneous, making it difficult to benchmark projects. The significant disparity in the toold limits the commercial development of the technology by generating uncertainty in project promoters and financial entities. This work presents a methodology to unify the efforts that are being carried out for the development of these simulation tools. The proposed methodology combines the use of open and proprietary source.
