Abstract

Carbon‐based composites have replaced metals in many structural components of modern airplanes; however, functional applications still require metal conductors and devices. Here, the production and integration in small‐scale airplane parts of electric devices based on metal‐free layered composites of graphene, boron nitride, and polymers are described. Thanks to their two‐dimensional structure, these materials feature excellent tunable thermoelectrical properties and high flexibility. We describe the production and performance of heaters and ice sensors installed on scaled NACA‐0012 airfoils to avoid ice formation, to remove ice or to detect the ice on the outer skin of the airfoil. We demonstrate that we can tune the electrical conductivity of the composite heating element from 105 to 103 S m−1 that is preserved even after 1000 bending cycles. The heaters successfully achieve anti‐icing and deicing in representative icing conditions and can sustain high‐power densities as required for electrothermal ice‐protection systems in aviation. The composite material can be readapted into a sensor able to detect ice formation in real time in an icing wind tunnel. Moreover, the possibility to use the heaters developed as heating molds to cure composite materials by out‐of‐oven curing, with a significant energy saving potential, is demonstrated. Abstract

The patterning of composites with carbon-based additives of nanometer or micrometer size was studied by the precise modification of material surfaces using laser technology. Initially, the composites are electrical insulators, but we can make them conductive by selective patterning; this process allows us to create conductive tracks within seconds, with a sheet resistance that can be adjusted over a wide range, from 108 Ω/sq down to 2.5 Ω/sq. The additives used include graphene nanoplatelets, graphene oxide nanosheets, and aramid fibers. By conducting microscopic and spectroscopic characterizations before and after laser treatment, we can distinguish between two different processes that lead to electrical conduction: (a) localized increase in the concentration of conductive additives or (b) localized reduction and pyrolysis of insulating additives. To demonstrate the versatility and usefulness of this technique in different fields of application, such as automotive, we fabricate three different devices on polyurethane: a heater, a proximity sensor, and an amperometric sensor for detecting biological analytes. Abstract

Graphene nanosheets are mechanically strong but flexible, electrically conductive and bio-compatible. Thus, due to these unique properties, they are being intensively studied as materials for the next generation of neural interfaces. Most of the literature focused on optimizing the interface between these materials and neurons. However, one of the most common causes of implant failure is the adverse inflammatory reaction of glial cells. These cells are not, as previously considered, just passive and supportive cells, but play a crucial role in the physiology and pathology of the nervous system, and in the interaction with implanted electrodes. Besides providing structural support to neurons, glia are responsible for the modulation of synaptic transmission and control of central and peripheral homeostasis. Accordingly, knowledge on the interaction between glia and biomaterials is essential to develop new implant-based therapies for the treatment of neurological disorders, such as epilepsy, brain tumours, and Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. This work provides an overview of the emerging literature on the interaction of graphene-based materials with glial cells, together with a complete description of the different types of glial cells and problems associated with them. We believe that this description will be important for researchers working in materials science and nanotechnology to develop new active materials to interface, measure and stimulate these cells.

Abstract

The possibility of exfoliating graphite into graphene sheets allows the researchers to produce a material, termed "graphene paper" (G‐paper), conductive as graphite but more flexible and processable. G‐paper is already used for electronic applications, like conductors, antennas, and heaters, outperforming metal conductors thanks to its high flexibility, lightness, chemical stability, and compatibility with polymeric substrates. Here, the effectiveness in the use of G‐paper for the realization of electrodes on flexible plastic substrates and textiles, and their applicability as amperometric sensors are demonstrated. The performance of these devices is compared with commercial platforms made of carbon‐based inks, finding that they outperform commercial devices in sensing nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH), a key molecule for enzymatic biosensing; the electrodes can achieve state‐of‐the‐art sensitivity (107.2 μA mm−1 cm−2) and limit of detection (0.6 × 10−6m) with no need of additional functionalization. Thanks to this property, the stable deposition of a suitable enzyme, namely lactate dehydrogenase, on the electrode surface is used as a proof of concept of the applicability of this new platform for the realization of a biosensor. Abstract

We present an overview of the main techniques for production and processing of graphene and related materials (GRMs), as well as the key characterization procedures. We adopt a 'hands-on' approach, providing practical details and procedures as derived from literature as well as from the authors' experience, in order to enable the reader to reproduce the results. Section I is devoted to 'bottom up' approaches, whereby individual constituents are pieced together into more complex structures. We consider graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) produced either by solution processing or by on-surface synthesis in ultra high vacuum (UHV), as well carbon nanomembranes (CNM). Production of a variety of GNRs with tailored band gaps and edge shapes is now possible. CNMs can be tuned in terms of porosity, crystallinity and electronic behaviour. Section II covers 'top down' techniques. These rely on breaking down of a layered precursor, in the graphene case usually natural crystals like graphite or artificially synthesized materials, such as highly oriented pyrolythic graphite, monolayers or few layers (FL) flakes. The main focus of this section is on various exfoliation techniques in a liquid media, either intercalation or liquid phase exfoliation (LPE). The choice of precursor, exfoliation method, medium as well as the control of parameters such as time or temperature are crucial. A definite choice of parameters and conditions yields a particular material with specific properties that makes it more suitable for a targeted application. We cover protocols for the graphitic precursors to graphene oxide (GO). This is an important material for a range of applications in biomedicine, energy storage, nanocomposites, etc. Hummers' and modified Hummers' methods are used to make GO that subsequently can be reduced to obtain reduced graphene oxide (RGO) with a variety of strategies. Abstract

Graphene oxide (GO) holds high promise for diagnostic and therapeutic applications in nanomedicine but reportedly displays immunotoxicity, underlining the need for developing functionalized GO with improved biocompatibility. This study describes adverse effects of GO and amino-functionalized GO (GONH(2)) during Caenorhabditis elegans development and ageing upon acute or chronic exposure. Chronic GO treatment throughout the C. elegans development causes decreased fecundity and a reduction of animal size, while acute treatment does not lead to any measurable physiological decline. However, RNA-Sequencing data reveal that acute GO exposure induces innate immune gene expression. The p38 MAP kinase, PMK-1, which is a well-established master regulator of innate immunity, protects C. elegans from chronic GO toxicity, as pmk-1 mutants show reduced tissue-functionality and facultative vivipary. In a direct comparison, GONH(2) exposure does not cause detrimental effects in the wild type or in pmk-1 mutants, and the innate immune response is considerably less pronounced. This work establishes enhanced biocompatibility of amino-functionalized GO in a whole-organism, emphasizing its potential as a biomedical nanomaterial.

Abstract

Graphene has been found to be an excellent heat-conductor due to the high speed of acoustic phonons in its lattice. In this work, we examine in depth a commercial graphene-based waist protector which uses graphene as a heating element. By employing thermal imaging in tandem with Raman microscopy, the thermal characteristics and performance of this device is fully assessed. It will be shown that no pronounced variation in its function is observed up to 3 hours of continuous operation and that the device seems to work effectively as an IR emitter at low power consumption. Temperature fluctuations, associated with a decrease of its electrical resistance are observed after 12 hours uptime and a temperature difference of 15 °C was recorded after 5 days of uninterrupted operation. These effects are thought to be due to the loss of graphene/polymer adhesion resulting from thermal fatigue. Overall, it is demonstrated that graphene can indeed be incorporated as an effective and operational thermal heating system in similar biomedical devices.

Conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM) is used for correlating the structural and electrical characteristics of graphene derived from graphene oxide. A novel approach is described for detecting and visualizing graphene oxide (GO) with high contrast on different substrates, including glass, quartz, and silicon. The self-assembly and the electrical characterization of bicomponent films consisting of the organic semiconducting small molecule blended with a rigid polymeric scaffold functionalized in the side chains with monomeric units of the same molecule is described. Monomer-polymer interactions are controlled by varying solvent and/or substrate polarity, so that either the monomer packing has dictated the polymer morphology or vice versa, which has led to a morphology displaying perylene-bis(dicarboximide) monomer (M-PDI) nanocrystals connected with each other by perylene-bis(dicarboximide)-functionalized poly(isocyanopeptide) (P-PDI) polymer wires.

Abstract

We present the science and technology roadmap for graphene, related two-dimensional crystals, and hybrid systems, targeting an evolution in technology, that might lead to impacts and benefits reaching into most areas of society. This roadmap was developed within the framework of the European Graphene Flagship and outlines the main targets and research areas as best understood at the start of this ambitious project. We provide an overview of the key aspects of graphene and related materials (GRMs), ranging from fundamental research challenges to a variety of applications in a large number of sectors, highlighting the steps necessary to take GRMs from a state of raw potential to a point where they might revolutionize multiple industries. We also define an extensive list of acronyms in an effort to standardize the nomenclature in this emerging field.

Abstract

Graphene and graphenic derivatives have rapidly emerged as an extremely promising system for electronic, optical, thermal, and electromechanical applications. Several approaches have been developed to produce these materials (i.e. scotch tape, CVD, chemical and solvent exfoliation). In this work we report a chemical approach to produce graphene by reducing graphene oxide (GO) via thermal or electrical methods. A morphological and electrical characterization of these systems has been performed using different techniques such as SPM, SEM, TEM, Raman and XPS.
