Objective: To determine the association between the ABO blood group and preeclampsia., Methods: This is a case-control study that included patients with ( n  = 253) and without ( n  = 457) preeclampsia/eclampsia in Northeastern Mexico. Data were obtained from electronic medical records. Binary multiple logistic regression analysis was used for analyzing the association between the ABO blood group and preeclampsia according to parity status while adjusting for potential confounders., Results: Blood groups A, B, and AB showed adjusted odds ratios of 0.6 (95%CI 0.3-1.0), 1.1 (95%CI 0.6-2.2), and 0.3 (95%CI 0.1-1.1) in multiparous women, respectively. No association was found in nulliparous women either., Conclusions: ABO blood groups were not associated with preeclampsia in Mexican women. [Figure: see text].

Background: It is known that late surgical reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is associated with a medial meniscal (MM) tears. However, the association between factors relating to sports and work activities and joint instability, has not been examined in non-athletic subjects., Objective: To compare sports and work activities and other factors associated with MM tears, in subjects with ACL rupture., Method: A case-control design study, of patients with ACL injury, 140 cases and 140 controls with and without a rupture of MM respectively, were included. Sociodemographic factors, sports and work activities were compared., Results: The independent factors associated with MM ruptures were continuing sports activities after injury (odds ratio [OR]: 3.6; 95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 1.7-7.9), joint instability (OR: 2.2; 95% CI: 1.8-2.6), time between injury and surgical intervention (time of evolution) (OR: 1.003; 95% CI: 1.0-1.01) and age (OR: 1.1; 95% CI: 1.03-1.1)., Conclusions: Intense activities of daily life such as continuing sports activities, after an ACL injury in non-athletic factory workers subjects, without previous training, as well as, age, joint instability and surgical delay are risk factors for rupture of MM., (Copyright: © 2020 Permanyer.)

Background and Objectives: To estimate the risk of iron overload in very low birthweight (VLBW) infants who receive more than two red blood cell (RBC) transfusions, in comparison with those who receive two or less during their hospital stay., Materials and Methods: Prospective open cohort study in VLBW infants with >2 (exposed) and ≤2 (non-exposed) RBC transfusions. Ferritin, alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were measured at birth and after each RBC transfusion. The incidence of iron overload was determined. Risk factors were analysed using a logistic regression model. RBC transfusion volume correlations with ferritin, ALT and AST were calculated with Spearman's rank correlation coefficient, as well as correlations between ferritin and aminotransferases., Results: A total of 63 patients were enrolled, 18 of which were exposed and 45 non-exposed. Twelve patients developed severe iron overload, eight exposed (44·5%) vs. four (8·8%) non-exposed (RR: 5, 95% CI: 1·7-14·6). Multivariate analysis showed that the number of transfusions increased the risk of iron overload (OR: 2·07, 95% CI: 1·36-2·14) while a higher one-minute Apgar score was associated with a lower risk (OR: 0·56, 95% CI: 0·32-0·99). Severe iron overload mainly occurred with a transfusion volume higher than 120 ml/kg. There was a positive correlation between ferritin and transfusion (r = 0·53; P < 0·001)., Conclusion: There was a higher risk of iron overload in exposed infants in comparison with non-exposed infants. Objective: To evaluate whether an association exists between gonarthrosis and metabolic syndrome X (MS) as well as other potential risk factors., Method: Comparative cross-sectional study of 310 patients evaluated by pathology of knee grouped in patients with gonarthrosis and without it. Sociodemographic, anthropometric and laboratory data was obtained. Gonarthrosis was defined as a ≥ 2 score in Kellgren-Lawrence radiological scale, and MS was assessed using the International Diabetes Federation criteria. Odds ratio and logistic regression were used for bivariate and multivariate analysis respectively., Results: The prevalence of MS in patients who had gonarthrosis was 79.9%, statistically higher than in patients without gonarthrosis (p = 0.001). Other factors that had a statistically higher frequency in this group included diabetes mellitus (p = 0.02) and hypertension (p = 0.02). Multivariate analysis revealed MS had an association with a higher prevalence of gonarthrosis (p = 0.003), while high density lipoproteins (p = 0.02) was associated with a lower prevalence., Conclusions: MS and its related alterations are associated to gonarthrosis; their adequate control could prevent patients from developing the disease., (Copyright: © 2017 SecretarÍa de Salud)

Background: Bleeding in pregnancy, childbirth or postpartum period is an emergency. Selective internal iliac (hypogastric) arteries ligation is a surgical therapy in selected cases of obstetric massive hemorrhage. It had proven to be safe., Objetive: To evaluate the risk for re-intervention for post-operatory bleeding in patients with obstetric hysterectomy and selective hypogastric arteries ligation., Material and Method: Cross-sectional study including women diagnosed with obstetric hysterectomy with and without selective arterial ligation as a factor to assess the risk of re-intervention, from December 2013 to December 2014, at High Specialty Medical Unit 23 of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, in Monterrey, which is a tertiary care medical center. Those patients with 28 weeks of gestation or more were selected. The postoperative blood loss was quantified by open drainage system (Penrose)., Results: We performed 88 hysterectomies in the study period. We included 45 women according to selection criteria. The average was 31.9 ± 5.48 years old. Performing a selective hypogastric arteries ligation may be a protective factor (p<0.05) for re-intervention as a consequence of postoperative bleeding., Conclusion: Selective arterial ligation is a factor that could help to prevent a re-intervention. A continuous training of physicians and residents of Gynecology and Obstetrics is essential to ensure the reduction in morbidity and maternal mortality.

Background: The purpose of the diagnostic evaluation of adnexal tumours is to exclude the possibility of malignancy. The malignancy risk index II identifies patients at high risk for ovarian cancer. The cut-off value is greater than 200., Objective: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of malignancy risk index II in post-menopausal women with adnexal tumours in relation to the histopathological results., Material and Methods: A total of 138 women with an adnexal mass were studied. The malignancy risk index II was determined in all of them. They were divided into two groups according to the histopathology results; 69 patients with benign tumours and 69 patients with malignant tumours. A diagnostic test type analysis was performed with respect to the results of malignancy risk index II ≤ 200 or greater than this., Results: The percentages and 95% confidence intervals were calculated. The accuracy was 81.8% (75.5-88.3), sensitivity 76.8% (66.9-86.7), specificity 87% (79.1-94.9), with a positive predictive value of 85.5% (76.7-94.3), and a negative predictive value of 78.9% (69.7-88.1). The positive likelihood ratio was 590, and the negative likelihood ratio was 0.266., Conclusions: The malignancy risk index II has good performance in the proper classification of post-menopausal women with adnexal masses, both benign and malignant, with an accuracy of 81.8%., (Copyright © 2015 Academia Mexicana de Cirugía A.C. Introduction: during the neonatal period seventy to ninety percent of very low birth weight (VLBW) infants (birth weight < 1500 g), are transfused with red blood cells (RBC) at least once; that represents infectious, biochemical, immunologic and oxidative risks. The objective of this paper is to describe the epidemiological profile of the VLBW infants that are transfused with RBC., Methodology: a retrospective review of 61 VLBW newborns admitted to the Neonatology Unit of a tertiary care hospital in Monterrey, México was conducted. The sample was collected consecutively. The information included the newborns epidemiological profile and the characteristics of transfusion events., Results: the prevalence of transfused newborns was 70.5%, 82 transfusions were in the early postnatal period (<28 days) and 32 in the late postnatal period (> or = 28 days); 43.9% of newborns had mechanical ventilation and their fraction of inspired oxygen was > or = 0.3. Mean birth weight and standard deviation of VLBW newborns were 1206 +/- 198 g; the hematocrit before transfusion was 33.63 +/- 4.17 mg/dL, and the RBC volume per transfusion was 16.85 +/- 4.85 mL. On average, the newborns had two donors and two transfusions., Conclusions: the epidemiological profile of the newborns included in this analysis was similar to published international reports. The transfusion characteristics suggest the possibility to apply restrictive guidelines and to evaluate a single-donor blood program for these newborns.
