Search

Shape measurement of rod-shaped particles in fluids is an outstanding challenge with applications in characterising synthetic functional nanoparticles and in early warning detection of rod-shaped pathogens in water supplies. However, it is challenging to achieve accurate and real-time measurements at a single particle scale in solution with existing methods. Here we introduce a novel technique to measure the aspect ratio of rod-shaped particles by analysing changes in the polarisation state of a laser beam transmitted through an optical microcavity through which the particle diffuses. The resolution in aspect ratio measurement is found to be around 1%. Our work opens the new possibility of in-situ and single-particle shape measurements, which have promising applications in nanoparticle characterisation, water monitoring, and beyond.

In this article we analyse the notion of knowledge role. First of all, we present how the relationship between problem solving methods and domain models is tackled in different approaches. We concentrate on how they cope with this issue in the knowledge engineering process. Secondly, we introduce several properties which can be used to analyse, characterise and define the notion of role. We evaluate and compare the works exposed previously following these dimensions. This analysis suggests some developments to better exploit the relationship between reasoning and domain knowledge. Striatal cholinergic interneurons (CINs) use acetylcholine (ACh) and glutamate (Glut) to regulate the striatal network since they express vesicular transporters for ACh (VAChT) and Glut (VGLUT3). However, whether ACh and Glut are released simultaneously and/or independently from cholinergic varicosities is an open question. The answer to that question requires the multichannel detection of vesicular transporters at the level of single synaptic vesicle (SV). Here, we used super-resolution STimulated Emission Depletion microscopy (STED) to characterize and quantify the distribution of VAChT and VGLUT3 in CINs SVs. Nearest-neighbor distances analysis between VAChT and VGLUT3-immunofluorescent spots revealed that 34% of CINs SVs contain both VAChT and VGLUT3. In addition, 40% of SVs expressed only VAChT while 26% of SVs contain only VGLUT3. These results suggest that SVs from CINs have the potential to store simultaneously or independently ACh and/or Glut. Overall, these morphological findings support the notion that CINs varicosities can signal with either ACh or Glut or both with an unexpected level of complexity.

We introduce a method for analyzing the physical properties of nanoparticles in fluids via the competition between viscous drag and optical forces. By flowing particles through a microfluidic device containing an optical microcavity which acts as a combined optical trap and sensor, the variation of the rate of trapping events with the different forces can be established. A clear threshold behaviour is observed which provides a measure of a parameter combining the dielectric polarizability and the hydrodynamic radius. This technique could be applied in combination with other analytic techniques to provide a detailed physical characterisation of particles in solution.

Two-dimensional semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides embedded in optical microcavities in the strong exciton-photon coupling regime may lead to promising applications in spin and valley addressable polaritonic logic gates and circuits. One significant obstacle for their realization is the inherent lack of scalability associated with the mechanical exfoliation commonly used for fabrication of two-dimensional materials and their heterostructures. Chemical vapor deposition offers an alternative scalable fabrication method for both monolayer semiconductors and other two-dimensional materials, such as hexagonal boron nitride. Observation of the strong light-matter coupling in chemical vapor grown transition metal dichalcogenides has been demonstrated so far in a handful of experiments with monolayer molybdenum disulfide and tungsten disulfide. Here we instead demonstrate the strong exciton-photon coupling in microcavities comprising large area transition metal dichalcogenide / hexagonal boron nitride heterostructures made from chemical vapor deposition grown molybdenum diselenide and tungsten diselenide encapsulated on one or both sides in continuous few-layer boron nitride films also grown by chemical vapor deposition. These transition metal dichalcogenide / hexagonal boron nitride heterostructures show high optical quality comparable with mechanically exfoliated samples, allowing operation in the strong coupling regime in a wide range of temperatures down to 4 Kelvin in tunable and monolithic microcavities, and demonstrating the possibility to successfully develop large area transition metal dichalcogenide based polariton devices.

We investigate, experimentally and theoretically, the dynamic optical hysteresis of a coherently driven cavity with non-instantaneous photon-photon interactions. By scanning the frequency detuning between the driving laser and the cavity resonance at different speeds across an optical bistability, we find a hysteresis area that is a non-monotonic function of the scanning speed. As the scanning speed increases and approaches the memory time of the photon-photon interactions, the hysteresis area decays following a power law with exponent -1. The exponent of this power law is independent of the system parameters. To reveal this universal scaling behavior theoretically, we introduce a memory kernel for the interaction term in the standard driven-dissipative Kerr model. Type I collagen is the main component of the extra-cellular matrix (ECM). In vitro, under a narrow window of physico-chemical conditions, type I collagen self-assembles to form complex supramolecular architectures reminiscent of those found in native ECM. Presently, a major challenge in collagen-based biomaterials is to couple the delicate collagen fibrillogenesis events with a controlled shaping process in non-denaturating conditions. In this work an ice-templating approach promoting the structuration of collagen into macroporous monoliths is used. Instead of common solvent removal procedures, a new topotactic conversion approach yielding self-assembled ordered fibrous materials is implemented. These collagen-only, non-cross-linked scaffolds exhibit uncommon mechanical properties in the wet state. With the help of the ice-patterned micro-ridge features, Normal Human Dermal Fibroblasts and C2C12 murine myoblasts successfully migrate and form highly-aligned populations within the resulting 3D biomimetic collagen scaffolds. These results open a new pathway to the development of new tissue engineering scaffolds ordered across various organization levels from the molecule to the macropore, and are of particular interest for biomedical applications where large scale 3D cell alignment is needed such as for muscular or nerve reconstruction., Comment: 34 pages, 7 figures, 4 supporting information figures

Atomically flat semiconducting materials such as monolayer WSe$_2$ hold great promise for novel optoelectronic devices. Recently, quantum light emission has been observed from bound excitons in exfoliated WSe$_2$. As part of developing optoelectronic devices, the control of the radiative properties of such emitters is an important step. Here we report the coupling of a bound exciton in WSe$_2$ to open microcavities. We use a range of radii of curvature in the plano-concave cavity geometry with mode volumes in the $\lambda^3$ regime, giving Purcell factors of up to 8 while increasing the photon flux five-fold. Additionally we determine the quantum efficiency of the single photon emitter to be $\eta = 0.46 \pm 0.03$. Our findings pave the way to cavity-enhanced monolayer based single photon sources for a wide range of applications in nanophotonics and quantum information technologies., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductors provide a unique possibility to access the electronic valley degree of freedom using polarized light, opening the way to valley information transfer between distant systems. Excitons with a well-defined valley index (or valley pseudospin) as well as superpositions of the exciton valley states can be created with light having circular and linear polarization, respectively. However, the generated excitons have short lifetimes (ps) and are also subject to the electron-hole exchange interaction leading to fast relaxation of the valley pseudospin and coherence. Here we show that control of these processes can be gained by embedding a monolayer of WSe$_2$ in an optical microcavity, where part-light-part-matter exciton-polaritons are formed in the strong light-matter coupling regime. We demonstrate the optical initialization of the valley coherent polariton populations, exhibiting luminescence with a linear polarization degree up to 3 times higher than that of the excitons. We further control the evolution of the polariton valley coherence using a Faraday magnetic field to rotate the valley pseudospin by an angle defined by the exciton-cavity-mode detuning, which exceeds the rotation angle in the bare exciton. This work provides unique insight into the decoherence mechanisms in TMDs and demonstrates the potential for engineering the valley pseudospin dynamics in monolayer semiconductors embedded in photonic structures.

Coherence is a defining feature of quantum condensates. These condensates are inherently multimode phenomena and in the macroscopic limit it becomes extremely difficult to resolve populations of individual modes and the coherence between them. In this work we demonstrate non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of photons in a sculpted dye-filled microcavity, where threshold is found for $8\pm 2$ photons. With this nanocondensate we are able to measure occupancies and coherences of individual energy levels of the bosonic field. Coherence of individual modes generally increases with increasing photon number, but at the breakdown of thermal equilibrium we observe multimode-condensation phase transitions wherein coherence unexpectedly decreases with increasing population, suggesting that the photons show strong inter-mode phase or number correlations despite the absence of a direct nonlinearity. Experiments are well-matched to a detailed non-equilibrium model. We find that microlaser and Bose-Einstein statistics each describe complementary parts of our data and are limits of our model in appropriate regimes, which informs the debate on the differences between the two.

While conventional semiconductor technology relies on the manipulation of electrical charge for the implementation of computational logic, additional degrees of freedom such as spin and valley offer alternative avenues for the encoding of information. In transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers, where spin-valley locking is present, strong retention of valley chirality has been reported for MoS$_2$, WSe$_2$ and WS$_2$ while MoSe$_2$ shows anomalously low valley polarisation retention. In this work, chiral selectivity of MoSe$_2$ cavity polaritons under helical excitation is reported with a polarisation degree that can be controlled by the exciton-cavity detuning. In contrast to the very low circular polarisation degrees seen in MoSe$_2$ exciton and trion resonances, we observe a significant enhancement of up to 7 times when in the polaritonic regime. Here, polaritons introduce a fast decay mechanism which inhibits full valley pseudospin relaxation and thus allows for increased retention of injected polarisation in the emitted light. A dynamical model applicable to cavity-polaritons in any TMD semiconductor, reproduces the detuning dependence through the incorporation of the cavity-modified exciton relaxation, allowing an estimate of the spin relaxation time in MoSe$_2$ which is an order of magnitude faster than those reported in other TMDs. The valley addressable exciton-polaritons reported here offer robust valley polarised states demonstrating the prospect of valleytronic devices based upon TMDs embedded in photonic structures, with significant potential for valley-dependent nonlinear polariton-polariton interactions.

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides exhibit strong optical transitions with significant potential for optoelectronic devices. In particular they are suited for cavity quantum electrodynamics in which strong coupling leads to polariton formation as a root to realisation of inversionless lasing, polariton condensationand superfluidity. Demonstrations of such strongly correlated phenomena to date have often relied on cryogenic temperatures, high excitation densities and were frequently impaired by strong material disorder. At room-temperature, experiments approaching the strong coupling regime with transition metal dichalcogenides have been reported, but well resolved exciton-polaritons have yet to be achieved. Here we report a study of monolayer WS$_2$ coupled to an open Fabry-Perot cavity at room-temperature, in which polariton eigenstates are unambiguously displayed. In-situ tunability of the cavity length results in a maximal Rabi splitting of $\hbar \Omega_{\rm{Rabi}} = 70$ meV, exceeding the exciton linewidth. Our data are well described by a transfer matrix model appropriate for the large linewidth regime. We demonstrate the tunable enhancement of the zero phonon line of a single nitrogen-vacancy color center in diamond at cryogenic temperature. An open cavity fabricated using focused ion beam milling provides mode volumes as small as 1.24 $\mu$m$^3$. In-situ tuning of the cavity resonance is achieved with piezoelectric actuators. At optimal coupling of the full open cavity the signal from individual zero phonon line transitions is enhanced by about a factor of 10 and the overall emission rate of the NV$^-$ center is increased by 40% compared with that measured from the same center in the absence of cavity field confinement. Layered materials can be assembled vertically to fabricate a new class of van der Waals (VDW) heterostructures a few atomic layers thick, compatible with a wide range of substrates and optoelectronic device geometries, enabling new strategies for control of light-matter coupling. Here, we incorporate molybdenum diselenide/boron nitride (MoSe$_2$/hBN) quantum wells (QWs) in a tunable optical microcavity. Part-light-part-matter polariton eigenstates are observed as a result of the strong coupling between MoSe$_2$ excitons and cavity photons, evidenced from a clear anticrossing between the neutral exciton and the cavity modes with a splitting of 20 meV for a single MoSe$_2$ monolayer QW, enhanced to 29 meV in MoSe$_2$/hBN/MoSe$_2$ double-QWs. The splitting at resonance provides an estimate of the exciton radiative lifetime of 0.4 ps. Our results pave the way for room temperature polaritonic devices based on multiple-QW VDW heterostructures, where polariton condensation and electrical polariton injection through the incorporation of graphene contacts may be realised.

We report an extended family of spin textures in coexisting modes of zero-dimensional polariton condensates spatially confined in tunable open microcavity structures. The coupling between photon spin and angular momentum, which is enhanced in the open cavity structures, leads to new eigenstates of the polariton condensates carrying quantised spin vortices. Depending on the strength and anisotropy of the cavity confinement potential and the strength of the spin-orbit coupling, which can be tuned via the excitonic/photonic fractions, the condensate emissions exhibit either spin-vortex-like patterns or linear polarization, in good agreement with theoretical modelling.

Open-access microcavities are emerging as a new approach to confine and engineer light at mode volumes down to the $\lambda^3$ regime. They offer direct access to a highly confined electromagnetic field while maintaining tunability of the system and flexibility for coupling to a range of matter systems. This article presents a study of coupled cavities, for which the substrates are produced using Focused Ion Beam milling. Based on experimental and theoretical investigation the engineering of the coupling between two microcavities with radius of curvature of \SI{6}{\micro\meter} is demonstrated. Details are provided by studying the evolution of spectral, spatial and polarisation properties through the transition from isolated to coupled cavities. Normal mode splittings up to 20 meV are observed for total mode volumes around $10 \times \lambda^3$. Quasi-two-dimensional (2D) films of layered metal-chalcogenides have attractive optoelectronic properties. However, photonic applications of thin films may be limited owing to weak light absorption and surface effects leading to reduced quantum yield. Integration of 2D films in optical microcavities will permit these limitations to be overcome owing to modified light coupling with the films. Here we present tunable microcavities with embedded monolayer MoS2 or few monolayer GaSe films. We observe significant modification of spectral and temporal properties of photoluminescence (PL): PL is emitted in spectrally narrow and wavelength-tunable cavity modes with quality factors up to 7400; PL life-time shortening by a factor of 10 is achieved, a consequence of Purcell enhancement of the spontaneous emission rate. This work has potential to pave the way to microcavity-enhanced light-emitting devices based on layered 2D materials and their heterostructures, and also opens possibilities for cavity QED in a new material system of van der Waals crystals.

We present a method to implement 3-dimensional polariton confinement with in-situ spectral tuning of the cavity mode. Our tunable microcavity is a hybrid system consisting of a bottom semiconductor distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) with a cavity containing quantum wells (QWs) grown on top and a dielectric concave DBR separated by a micrometer sized gap. Nanopositioners allow independent positioning of the two mirrors and the cavity mode energy can be tuned by controlling the distance between them. When close to resonance we observe a characteristic anticrossing between the cavity modes and the QW exciton demonstrating strong coupling. For the smallest radii of curvature concave mirrors of 5.6 $\mu$m and 7.5 $\mu$m real-space polariton imaging reveals submicron polariton confinement due to the hemispherical cavity geometry.

We report on the realization of an out-of-equilibrium polariton condensate under pulsed excitation in a one-dimensional geometry. We observe macroscopic occupation of a polaritonic mode with only 3% photonic fraction, and a nature strikingly close to that of a bare exciton condensate. With the help of this tiny photonic fraction, the condensate is found to display first-order coherence over distances as large as 10 microns. Based on a driven-dissipative mean field model, we find that the correlations length is limited by the effects of a shallow disorder under non-equilibrium conditions., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We present a simple method to extract the homogeneous linewidth of a single photon emitter line exhibiting fast (down to 1 ns) spectral diffusion (SD). It is based on a recently developed technique using photon correlation measurements on half of the line. Here we show that the SD induced bunching depends on the ratio between the width of the homogeneous line and the spectral diffusion amplitude. Using this technique on a CdSe/ZnSe quantum dot, we investigate the temperature dependence of its fast SD amplitude and its homogeneous excitonic linewidth., Comment: 5 pages

We investigate the possibility of measuring the homogeneous and inhomogeneous contribution to the linewidth of a spectrally diffusing single photon emitter using a simple photon correlation spectroscopy method (PCS). The photon energy statistics of the homogeneous line (poissonian) and of the spectral diffusion (first order markovian) being of different natures, they act differently on the half-line autocorrelation function (HLAF). We model here their effects and show it is possible to extricate them, opening the opportunity to determine separately the homogeneous linewidth, and the spectral diffusion amplitude.

Large bandgap semiconductor microwires constitute a very advantageous alternative to planar microcavities in the context of room temperature strong coupling regime between exciton and light. In this work we demonstrate that in a GaN microwire, the strong coupling regime is achieved up to room temperature with a large Rabi splitting of 125 meV never achieved before in a Nitride-based photonic nanostructure. The demonstration relies on a method which doesn't require any knowledge \'a priori on the photonic eigenmodes energy in the microwire, i.e. the details of the microwire cross-section shape. Moreover, using a heavily doped segment within the same microwire, we confirm experimentally that free excitons provide the oscillator strength for this strong coupling regime. The measured Rabi splitting to linewidth ratio of 15 matches state of the art planar Nitride-based microcavities, in spite of a much simpler design and a less demanding fabrication process. These results show that GaN microwires constitute a simpler and promising system to achieve electrically pumped lasing in the strong coupling regime., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

Phonon damping is the main source of pure dephasing in the solid state, limiting many fundamental quantum effects to low temperature observations. Here we show how excitons in semiconductors can be totally decoupled from the phonon bath, even at room temperature, thanks to their strong interaction with photons. To do so, we investigated ZnO microwires, a new semiconductor nanostructure made of large band-gap material where the light can be trapped and guided into whispering gallery modes. In this system, the very large coupling regime between exciton and photon results in unusual exciton-polariton of one-dimensional character and Rabi splitting as large as 300meV. We find that polariton modes of excitonic fraction up to 75% exhibit no thermal broadening up to room temperature. We show that this remarkable behavior is due to the very large Rabi splitting as compared to the LO phonon energy., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures

The MIMAC project is based on a matrix of Micro Time Projection Chambers (micro-TPC) for Dark Matter search, filled with He3 or CF4 and using ionization and tracks. The AMANDE facility at IRSN-Cadarache produces mono-energetic neutron fields from 2 keV to 20 MeV with metrological quality. To be considered as a standard facility, characteristics of neutron field i.e fluence distribution must be well known by a device using absolute measurements. The development of new detector systems allowing a direct measurement of neutron energy and fluence has started in 2006. Using the proton recoil telescope principle with the goal of increase the efficiency, two systems with full localization are studied. A proton recoil telescope using CMOS sensor (CMOS-RPT) is studied for measurements at high energies and the helium 4 gaseous micro-time projection chamber (microTPC He4) will be dedicated to the lowest energies. Simulations of the two systems were performed with the transport Monte Carlo code MCNPX, to choose the components and the geometry, to optimize the efficiency and detection limits of both devices or to estimate performances expected. The ionization quenching factor (IQF) is defined as the fraction of energy released by a recoil in a medium through ionization compared with its total kinetic energy. At low energies, in the range of a few keV, the ionization produced in a medium falls rapidly and systematic measurements are needed. We report measurements carried out at such low energies as a function of the pressure in He4 at 350, 700, 1000 and 1300 mbar. In order to produce a nucleus moving with a controlled energy in the detection volume, we have developed an Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source (ECRIS) coupled to an ionization chamber by a differential pumping. The quenching factor of He4 has been measured for the first time down to 1 keV recoil energies. An important deviation with respect to the phenomenological calculations has been found allowing an estimation of the scintillation produced in He4 as a function of pressure. The variation of the IQF as a function of the percentage of isobutane, used as quencher, is also presented.

The paper reports on the Raman/fluorescence study of melt-grown Al2O3/GdAlO3 eutectic composites. Raman bands from the -alumina and gadolinium perovskite phases identified by X-ray diffraction were systematically observed together in the domains optically visible, even when the latter were much larger than the Raman probe. This suggests a more complex interlocking pattern than appearing on SEM or optical microscopy images. The polarization of alumina and GdAlO3 Raman bands evidenced the preferential orientation of Al2O3 phase with respect to the sample growth direction, in agreement with TEM results. In addition, the position of chromium impurity fluorescence bands was used to map the residual stress in alumina phase. It is a compression in the 200-300 MPa range.
