Search

The precise Doppler method for measuring stellar radial velocities (RV) is a fundamental technique in modern astronomy. This method records a star's spectrum and detects periodic Doppler shifts in its spectral features, which indicate the gravitational influences induced by orbiting companions. The Doppler technique has yielded remarkable successes in exoplanet detection, uncovering a diverse array of planetary systems ranging from hot Jupiters to Neptune-mass planets and super-Earths. Having led to the discovery of over 1100 exoplanets, the RV method is the most effective approach for measuring orbital geometries and minimum masses, which are of fundamental importance when accessing planet formation and evolution scenarios. However, exoplanet detection via precise RV measurements poses significant challenges, including managing various sources of interference, such as instrumental errors, and mitigating spurious Doppler shifts induced by phenomena like stellar activity. Key to this technique's advancement is instrumental calibration methods, notably precise calibration methods and ultra-stable spectrographs. This technique holds promise in systematically exploring the domain of Jovian analogs, rocky and icy planets within the habitable zones of their parent stars, and providing crucial follow-up observations for transiting candidates detected by space missions. The synergy between transit and Doppler measurements of exoplanets, when feasible, has provided a comprehensive set of orbital and physical parameters for exoplanets, such as the dynamical mass and mean planet density, which is enhancing our understanding of their internal composition. We present the discovery of TOI-7041 b (TIC 201175570 b), a hot Saturn transiting a red giant star with measurable stellar oscillations. We observe solar-like oscillations in TOI-7041 with a frequency of maximum power of $\nu_{\rm max} = 218.50\pm2.23$ $\mu$Hz and a large frequency separation of $\Delta\nu = 16.5282\pm0.0186$ $\mu$Hz. Our asteroseismic analysis indicates that TOI-7041 has a radius of $4.10 \pm 0.06$(stat) $\pm$ 0.05(sys) $R_\odot$, making it one of the largest stars around which a transiting planet has been discovered with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), and the mission's first oscillating red giant with a transiting planet. TOI-7041 b has an orbital period of $9.691 \pm 0.006$ days and a low eccentricity of $e = 0.04 \pm 0.04$. We measure a planet radius of $1.02 \pm 0.03$ $R_J$ with photometry from TESS, and a planet mass of $0.36 \pm 0.16$ $M_J$ ($114 \pm 51$ $M_\oplus$) with ground-based radial velocity measurements. TOI-7041 b appears less inflated than similar systems receiving equivalent incident flux, and its circular orbit indicates that it is not undergoing tidal heating due to circularization. The asteroseismic analysis of the host star provides some of the tightest constraints on stellar properties for a TESS planet host and enables precise characterization of the hot Saturn. This system joins a small number of TESS-discovered exoplanets orbiting stars that exhibit clear stellar oscillations and indicates that extended TESS observations of evolved stars will similarly provide a path to improved exoplanet characterization., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables

Hot and warm Jupiters might have undergone the same formation and evolution path, but the two populations exhibit different distributions of orbital parameters, challenging our understanding on their actual origin. The present work, which is the results of our warm Jupiters survey carried out with the CHIRON spectrograph within the KESPRINT collaboration, aims to address this challenge by studying two planets that could help bridge the gap between the two populations. We report the confirmation and mass determination of a hot Jupiter (orbital period shorter than 10 days), TOI-2420\,b, and a warm Jupiter, TOI-2485\,b. We performed a joint analysis using a wide variety of spectral and photometric data in order to characterize these planetary systems. We found that TOI-2420\,b has an orbital period of P$_{\rm b}$=5.8 days, a mass of M$_{\rm b}$=0.9 M$_{\rm J}$ and a radius of R$_{\rm b}$=1.3 R$_{\rm J}$, with a planetary density of 0.477 \gc; while TOI-2485\,b has an orbital period of P$_{\rm b}$=11.2 days, a mass of M$_{\rm b}$=2.4 M$_{\rm J}$ and a radius of R$_{\rm b}$=1.1 R$_{\rm J}$ with density 2.36 \gc. With current parameters, the migration history for TOI-2420\,b and TOI-2485\,b is unclear: the high-eccentricity migration scenarios cannot be ruled out, and TOI-2485\,b's characteristics may rather support this scenario.

We report the discovery of the most eccentric transiting brown dwarf in the brown dwarf desert, TOI02490b. The brown dwarf desert is the lack of brown dwarfs around main sequence stars within $\sim3$~AU and is thought to be caused by differences in formation mechanisms between a star and planet. To date, only $\sim40$ transiting brown dwarfs have been confirmed. \systemt is a $73.6\pm2.4$ \mjupnospace, $1.00\pm0.02$ \rjup brown dwarf orbiting a $1.004_{-0.022}^{+0.031}$ \msunnospace, $1.105_{-0.012}^{+0.012}$ \rsun sun-like star on a 60.33~d orbit with an eccentricity of $0.77989\pm0.00049$. The discovery was detected within \tess sectors 5 (30 minute cadence) and 32 (2 minute and 20 second cadence). It was then confirmed with 31 radial velocity measurements with \feros by the WINE collaboration and photometric observations with the Next Generation Transit Survey. Stellar modelling of the host star estimates an age of $\sim8$~Gyr, which is supported by estimations from kinematics likely placing the object within the thin disc. However, this is not consistent with model brown dwarf isochrones for the system age suggesting an inflated radius. Only one other transiting brown dwarf with an eccentricity higher than 0.6 is currently known in the brown dwarf desert. GJ 581 is a nearby M dwarf known to host a packed multiple planet system with 2 super-Earths and a Neptune-mass planet. We present new orbital analyses of the system, utilizing recent RV data obtained from the CARMENES spectrograph combined with newly reprocessed archival data from the HARPS and HIRES spectrographs. Our aim was to analyze the post-discovery spectroscopic data of GJ 581, which were obtained with CARMENES. In addition, we used publicly available HIRES and HARPS spectroscopic data to seek evidence of the known and disputed exoplanets in this system. We aimed to investigate the stellar activity of GJ 581 and update the planetary system's orbital parameters using state-of-the-art numerical models and techniques. We performed a periodogram analysis of the available precise CARMENES, HIRES, and HARPS RVs and of stellar activity indicators. We conducted detailed orbital analyses by testing various orbital configurations consistent with the RV data. We studied the posterior probability distribution of the parameters fit to the data and explored the long-term stability and overall orbital dynamics of the system. We refined the orbital parameters of the system using the most precise and complete set of Doppler data available. Consistent with the existing literature, we confirm that the system is unequivocally composed of only 3 planets detectable in the present data, dismissing the putative planet GJ 581 d as an artifact of stellar activity. Our N-body fit reveals that the system's inclination is i $=$ 47.0 deg, which implies that the planets could be up to 30% more massive than their previously reported minimum masses. We present ConDiff, a novel dataset for scientific machine learning. ConDiff focuses on the diffusion equation with varying coefficients, a fundamental problem in many applications of parametric partial differential equations (PDEs). The main novelty of the proposed dataset is that we consider discontinuous coefficients with high contrast. These coefficient functions are sampled from a selected set of distributions. This class of problems is not only of great academic interest, but is also the basis for describing various environmental and industrial problems. In this way, ConDiff shortens the gap with real-world problems while remaining fully synthetic and easy to use. ConDiff consists of a diverse set of diffusion equations with coefficients covering a wide range of contrast levels and heterogeneity with a measurable complexity metric for clearer comparison between different coefficient functions. We baseline ConDiff on standard deep learning models in the field of scientific machine learning. By providing a large number of problem instances, each with its own coefficient function and right-hand side, we hope to encourage the development of novel physics-based deep learning approaches, such as neural operators and physics-informed neural networks, ultimately driving progress towards more accurate and efficient solutions of complex PDE problems.

Large linear systems are ubiquitous in modern computational science. The main recipe for solving them is iterative solvers with well-designed preconditioners. Deep learning models may be used to precondition residuals during iteration of such linear solvers as the conjugate gradient (CG) method. Neural network models require an enormous number of parameters to approximate well in this setup. Another approach is to take advantage of small graph neural networks (GNNs) to construct preconditioners of the predefined sparsity pattern. In our work, we recall well-established preconditioners from linear algebra and use them as a starting point for training the GNN. Numerical experiments demonstrate that our approach outperforms both classical methods and neural network-based preconditioning. We also provide a heuristic justification for the loss function used and validate our approach on complex datasets.

Discovering transiting exoplanets with relatively long orbital periods ($>$10 days) is crucial to facilitate the study of cool exoplanet atmospheres ($T_{\rm eq} < 700 K$) and to understand exoplanet formation and inward migration further out than typical transiting exoplanets. In order to discover these longer period transiting exoplanets, long-term photometric and radial velocity campaigns are required. We report the discovery of TOI-2447 b ($=$ NGTS-29b), a Saturn-mass transiting exoplanet orbiting a bright (T=10.0) Solar-type star (T$_{\rm eff}$=5730 K). TOI-2447 b was identified as a transiting exoplanet candidate from a single transit event of 1.3% depth and 7.29 h duration in $TESS$ Sector 31 and a prior transit event from 2017 in NGTS data. Four further transit events were observed with NGTS photometry which revealed an orbital period of P=69.34 days. The transit events establish a radius for TOI-2447 b of $0.865 \pm 0.010\rm R_{\rm J}$, while radial velocity measurements give a mass of $0.386 \pm 0.025 \rm M_{\rm J}$. The equilibrium temperature of the planet is $414$ K, making it much cooler than the majority of $TESS$ planet discoveries. We also detect a transit signal in NGTS data not caused by TOI-2447 b, along with transit timing variations and evidence for a $\sim$150 day signal in radial velocity measurements. It is likely that the system hosts additional planets, but further photometry and radial velocity campaigns will be needed to determine their parameters with confidence. TOI-2447 b/NGTS-29b joins a small but growing population of cool giants that will provide crucial insights into giant planet composition and formation mechanisms., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures. We investigate the two-pulse photon echo response of excitons in the mixed lead halide perovskite crystal \sample in dependence on the excitation intensity and polarization of the incident laser pulses. Using spectrally narrow picosecond laser pulses, we address localized excitons with long coherence times $T_2 \approx 100\,$ps. This approach offers high sensitivity for the observation of excitation-induced changes in the homogeneous linewidth $\Gamma_2=2\hbar/T_2$ on the $\mu$eV scale. Through intensity-dependent measurements, we evaluate the increase of $\Gamma_2$ by 10~$\mu$eV at an exciton density of 10$^{17}$~cm$^{-3}$ being comparable with the intrinsic linewidth of 14$\,\mu$eV. We observe that the decay of the photon echo and its power dependence are sensitive to the polarization configuration of the excitation pulses, which indicates that spin-dependent exciton-exciton interactions contribute to excitation-induced dephasing. In cross-linear polarization, the decay is faster and its dependence on exciton density is stronger as compared to the co-polarized configuration. Using a two-exciton model accounting for different spin configurations we are able to reproduce the experimental results.

We present a computational study of assembling carbon clusters and nanophases in space from carbon aggregations. Geometry optimizations and Density-functional-based tight-binding (SCC-DFTB) dynamics methods are employed to predict carbon clusters, their time evolution, and their stability. The initial density of the aggregates is found to be of primary importance for the structural properties of the clusters. Aggregates with sufficiently low initial density yield clusters with approximately equal prevalence of sp and sp2 hybridized states and almost missing sp3 ones. The increase in the initial density results in sp2-dominant molecules that resemble the carbon skeleton of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Larger initial aggregations with tetrahedral interatomic orientation result in sp2-dominant multi-dimensional polymers. Such materials are highly porous and resemble axially bound nanotubes. Some resultant clusters resemble fullerene building blocks. Spheroid nanoparticles resembling improper fullerenes are predicted by metadynamics, aimed at inter-fragment coupling reactions. One such structure has the lowest binding energy per atom among the studied molecules. All zero-dimensional forms, obtained by the simulations, conform to the experimentally detected types of molecules in space. The theoretical IR spectrum of the clusters closely resembles that of fullerene C70 and therefore such imperfect structures may be mistaken for known fullerenes in experimental infrared (IR) telescope studies.

We report the discovery and characterization of three giant exoplanets orbiting solar-analog stars, detected by the \tess space mission and confirmed through ground-based photometry and radial velocity (RV) measurements taken at La Silla observatory with \textit{FEROS}. TOI-2373\,b is a warm Jupiter orbiting its host star every $\sim$ 13.3 days, and is one of the two most massive known exoplanet with a precisely determined mass and radius around a star similar to the Sun, with an estimated mass of m$_p$ = $9.3^{+0.2}_{-0.2}\,M_{\mathrm{jup}}$, and a radius of $r_p$ = $0.93^{+0.2}_{-0.2}\,R_{\mathrm{jup}}$. With a mean density of $\rho = 14.4^{+0.9}_{-1.0}\,\mathrm{g\,cm}^{-3}$, TOI-2373\,b is among the densest planets discovered so far. TOI-2416\,b orbits its host star on a moderately eccentric orbit with a period of $\sim$ 8.3 days and an eccentricity of $e$ = $0.32^{+0.02}_{-0.02}$. TOI-2416\,b is more massive than Jupiter with $m_p$ = 3.0$^{+0.10}_{-0.09}\,M_{\mathrm{jup}}$, however is significantly smaller with a radius of $r_p$ = $0.88^{+0.02}_{-0.02},R_{\mathrm{jup}}$, leading to a high mean density of $\rho = 5.4^{+0.3}_{-0.3}\,\mathrm{g\,cm}^{-3}$. TOI-2524\,b is a warm Jupiter near the hot Jupiter transition region, orbiting its star every $\sim$ 7.2 days on a circular orbit. It is less massive than Jupiter with a mass of $m_p$ = $0.64^{+0.04}_{-0.04}\,M_{\mathrm{jup}}$, and is consistent with an inflated radius of $r_p$ = $1.00^{+0.02}_{-0.03}\,R_{\mathrm{jup}}$, leading to a low mean density of $\rho = 0.79^{+0.08}_{-0.08}\,\mathrm{g\,cm}^{-3}$. The newly discovered exoplanets TOI-2373\,b, TOI-2416\,b, and TOI-2524\,b have estimated equilibrium temperatures of $860^{+10}_{-10}$ K, $1080^{+10}_{-10}$ K, and $1100^{+20}_{-20}$ K, respectively, placing them in the sparsely populated transition zone between hot and warm Jupiters.

In the hunt for Earth-like exoplanets it is crucial to have reliable host star parameters, as they have a direct impact on the accuracy and precision of the inferred parameters for any discovered exoplanet. For stars with masses between 0.35 and 0.5 ${\rm M_{\odot}}$ an unexplained radius inflation is observed relative to typical stellar models. However, for fully convective objects with a mass below 0.35 ${\rm M_{\odot}}$ it is not known whether this radius inflation is present as there are fewer objects with accurate measurements in this regime. Low-mass eclipsing binaries present a unique opportunity to determine empirical masses and radii for these low-mass stars. Here we report on such a star, EBLM J2114-39\,B. We have used HARPS and FEROS radial-velocities and \textit{TESS} photometry to perform a joint fit of the data, and produce one of the most precise estimates of a very low mass star's parameters. Using a precise and accurate radius for the primary star using {\it Gaia} DR3 data, we determine J2114-39 to be a $M_1 = 0.998 \pm 0.052$~${\rm M_{\odot}}$ primary star hosting a fully convective secondary with mass $M_2~=~0.0986~\pm 0.0038~\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$, which lies in a poorly populated region of parameter space. With a radius $R_2 =~0.1275~\pm0.0020~\,\mathrm{R_{\odot}}$, similar to TRAPPIST-1, we see no significant evidence of radius inflation in this system when compared to stellar evolution models. Magnetic activity is currently the primary limiting factor in radial velocity (RV) exoplanet searches. Even inactive stars, such as the Sun, exhibit RV jitter of the order of a few ms$^{-1}$ due to active regions on their surfaces. Time series of chromospheric activity indicators, such as the Ca II H&K lines, can be utilized to reduce the impact of such activity phenomena on exoplanet search programmes. In addition, the identification and correction of instrumental effects can improve the precision of RV exoplanet surveys. We aim to update the HARPS-RVBank RV database and include an additional $3.5$ years of time series and Ca II H&K lines ($R_{\mathrm{HK}}^\prime$) chromospheric activity indicators. This additional data will aid in the analysis of the impact of stellar magnetic activity on the RV time series obtained with the HARPS instrument. Our updated database aims to provide a valuable resource for the exoplanet community in understanding and mitigating the effects of such stellar magnetic activity on RV measurements. The new HARPS-RVBank database includes all stellar spectra obtained with the HARPS instrument prior to January 2022. The RVs corrected for small but significant nightly zero-point variations were calculated using an established method. The $R_{\mathrm{HK}}^\prime$ estimates were determined from both individual spectra and co-added template spectra with the use of model atmospheres. The new version of the HARPS RV database has a total of 252615 RVs of 5239 stars. Of these, 195387 have $R_{\mathrm{HK}}^\prime$ values, which corresponds to 77\% of all publicly available HARPS spectra. Currently, this is the largest public database of high-precision (down to 1ms$^{-1}$) RVs, and the largest compilation of $R_{\mathrm{HK}}^\prime$ measurements., Comment: 6 pages, 10 figures

We present the spectroscopic confirmation and precise mass measurement of the warm giant planet TOI-199 b. This planet was first identified in TESS photometry and confirmed using ground-based photometry from ASTEP in Antarctica including a full 6.5$\,$h long transit, PEST, Hazelwood, and LCO; space photometry from NEOSSat; and radial velocities (RVs) from FEROS, HARPS, CORALIE, and CHIRON. Orbiting a late G-type star, TOI-199\,b has a $\mathrm{104.854_{-0.002}^{+0.001} \, d}$ period, a mass of $\mathrm{0.17\pm0.02 \, M_J}$, and a radius of $\mathrm{0.810\pm0.005 \, R_J}$. It is the first warm exo-Saturn with a precisely determined mass and radius. The TESS and ASTEP transits show strong transit timing variations, pointing to the existence of a second planet in the system. The joint analysis of the RVs and TTVs provides a unique solution for the non-transiting companion TOI-199 c, which has a period of $\mathrm{273.69_{-0.22}^{+0.26} \, d}$ and an estimated mass of $\mathrm{0.28_{-0.01}^{+0.02} \, M_J}$. We present the results of a missing-energy search for Light Dark Matter which has a new interaction with ordinary matter transmitted by a vector boson, called dark photon $A^\prime$. For the first time, this search is performed with a positron beam by using the significantly enhanced production of $A^\prime$ in the resonant annihilation of positrons with atomic electrons of the target nuclei, followed by the invisible decay of $A^\prime$ into dark matter. No events were found in the signal region with $(10.1 \pm 0.1)~\times~10^{9}$ positrons on target with 100 GeV energy. This allowed us to set new exclusion limits that, relative to the collected statistics, prove the power of this experimental technique. Thermal dark matter models with particle $\chi$ masses below the electroweak scale can provide an explanation for the observed relic dark matter density. This would imply the existence of a new feeble interaction between the dark and ordinary matter. We report on a new search for the sub-GeV $\chi$ production through the interaction mediated by a new vector boson, called the dark photon $A'$, in collisions of 100 GeV electrons with the active target of the NA64 experiment at the CERN SPS. With $9.37\times10^{11}$ electrons on target collected during 2016-2022 runs NA64 probes for the first time the well-motivated region of parameter space of benchmark thermal scalar and fermionic dark matter models. No evidence for dark matter production has been found. This allows us to set the most sensitive limits on the $A'$ couplings to photons for masses $m_{A'} \lesssim 0.35$ GeV, and to exclude scalar and Majorana dark matter with the $\chi-A'$ coupling $\alpha_D \leq 0.1$ for masses $0.001 \lesssim m_\chi \lesssim 0.1$ GeV and $3m_\chi \leq m_{A'}$., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1906.00176

In this study, we present the measurement of the intrinsic hadronic contamination at the CERN SPS H4 beamline configured to transport electrons and positrons at 100 GeV/c momentum. The analysis was performed using data collected by the NA64-$e$ experiment in 2022. Our study is based on calorimetric measurements, exploiting the different interaction mechanisms of electrons and hadrons in the NA64-ECAL and NA64-HCAL detectors. We determined the intrinsic hadronic contamination by comparing the results obtained using the nominal electron/positron beamline configuration with those obtained in a dedicated setup, in which only hadrons impinged on the detector. The significant differences in the experimental signatures of electrons and hadrons motivated our approach, resulting in a small and well-controlled systematic uncertainty for the measurement. Our study allowed us to precisely determine the intrinsic hadronic contamination, which represents a crucial parameter for the NA64 experiment in which the hadron contaminants may result in non-trivial backgrounds. Moreover, we performed dedicated Monte Carlo simulations for the hadron production induced by the primary T2 target. We found a good agreement between measurements and simulation results, confirming the validity of the applied methodology and our evaluation of the intrinsic hadronic contamination.

Compositional engineering of the optical properties of hybrid organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites is one of the cornerstones for the realization of efficient solar cells and tailored light-emitting devices. We study the effect of compositional disorder on coherent exciton dynamics in a mixed FA$_{0.9}$Cs$_{0.1}$PbI$_{2.8}$Br$_{0.2}$ perovskite crystal using photon echo spectroscopy. We reveal that the homogeneous linewidth of excitons can be as narrow as 16$\mu$eV at a temperature of 1.5K. The corresponding exciton coherence time of $T_2=83$ps is exceptionally long being attributed to the localization of excitons due to variation of composition at the scale of ten to hundreds of nanometers. From spectral and temperature dependences of the two- and three-pulse photon echo decay we conclude that for low-energy excitons, pure decoherence associated with elastic scattering on phonons is comparable with the exciton lifetime, while for excitons with higher energies, inelastic scattering to lower energy states via phonon emission dominates.

We report the discovery and orbital characterization of three new transiting warm giant planets. These systems were initially identified as presenting single transit events in the light curves generated from the full frame images of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). Follow-up radial velocity measurements and additional light curves were used to determine the orbital periods and confirm the planetary nature of the candidates. The planets orbit slightly metal-rich late F- and early G-type stars. We find that TOI 4406b has a mass of $M_P$= 0.30 $\pm$ 0.04 $M_J$ , a radius of $R_P$= 1.00 $\pm$ 0.02 $R_J$ , and a low eccentricity orbit (e=0.15 $\pm$ 0.05) with a period of P= 30.08364 $\pm$ 0.00005 d . TOI 2338b has a mass of $M_P$= 5.98 $\pm$ 0.20 $M_J$ , a radius of $R_P$= 1.00 $\pm$ 0.01 $R_J$ , and a highly eccentric orbit (e= 0.676 $\pm$ 0.002 ) with a period of P= 22.65398 $\pm$ 0.00002 d . Finally, TOI 2589b has a mass of $M_P$= 3.50 $\pm$ 0.10 $M_J$ , a radius of $R_P$= 1.08 $\pm$ 0.03 $R_J$ , and an eccentric orbit (e = 0.522 $\pm$ 0.006 ) with a period of P= 61.6277 $\pm$ 0.0002 d . We report the discovery of a super-Jovian 2:1 mean-motion resonance (MMR) pair around the G-type star TIC 279401253, whose dynamical architecture is a prospective benchmark for planet formation and orbital evolution analysis. The system was discovered thanks to a single transit event recorded by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission, which pointed to a Jupiter-sized companion with poorly constrained orbital parameters. We began ground-based precise radial velocity (RV) monitoring with HARPS and FEROS within the Warm gIaNts with tEss (WINE) survey to constrain the transiting body's period, mass, and eccentricity. The RV measurements revealed not one but two massive planets with periods of 76.80$_{-0.06}^{+0.06}$ days and 155.3$_{-0.7}^{+0.7}$ days, respectively. A combined analysis of transit and RV data yields an inner transiting planet with a mass of 6.14$_{-0.42}^{+0.39}$ M$_{\rm Jup}$ and a radius of 1.00$_{-0.04}^{+0.04}$ R$_{\rm Jup}$, and an outer planet with a minimum mass of 8.02$_{-0.18}^{+0.18}$ M$_{\rm Jup}$, indicating a massive giant pair. A detailed dynamical analysis of the system reveals that the planets are locked in a strong first-order, eccentricity-type 2:1 MMR, which makes TIC 279401253 one of the rare examples of truly resonant architectures supporting disk-induced planet migration. The bright host star, $V \approx$ 11.9 mag, the relatively short orbital period ($P_{\rm b}$ = 76.80$_{-0.06}^{+0.06}$ d) and pronounced eccentricity (e =0.448$_{-0.029}^{+0.028}$) make the transiting planet a valuable target for atmospheric investigation with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and ground-based extremely-large telescopes., Comment: Published in the ApJL

The CARMENES instrument was conceived to deliver high-accuracy radial velocity (RV) measurements with long-term stability to search for temperate rocky planets around a sample of nearby cool stars. The broad wavelength coverage was designed to provide a range of stellar activity indicators to assess the nature of potential RV signals and to provide valuable spectral information to help characterise the stellar targets. The CARMENES Data Release 1 (DR1) makes public all observations obtained during the CARMENES guaranteed time observations, which ran from 2016 to 2020 and collected 19,633 spectra for a sample of 362 targets. The CARMENES survey target selection was aimed at minimising biases, and about 70% of all known M dwarfs within 10 pc and accessible from Calar Alto were included. The data were pipeline-processed, and high-level data products, including 18,642 precise RVs for 345 targets, were derived. Time series data of spectroscopic activity indicators were also obtained. We discuss the characteristics of the CARMENES data, the statistical properties of the stellar sample, and the spectroscopic measurements. We show examples of the use of CARMENES data and provide a contextual view of the exoplanet population revealed by the survey, including 33 new planets, 17 re-analysed planets, and 26 confirmed planets from transiting candidate follow-up. A subsample of 238 targets was used to derive updated planet occurrence rates, yielding an overall average of 1.44+/-0.20 planets with 1 M_Earth < M sin i < 1000 M_Earth and 1 d < P_orb < 1000 d per star, and indicating that nearly every M dwarf hosts at least one planet. TOI-2525 is a K-type star with an estimated mass of M = 0.849$_{-0.033}^{+0.024}$ M$_\odot$ and radius of R = 0.785$_{-0.007}^{+0.007}$ R$_\odot$ observed by the TESS mission in 22 sectors (within sectors 1 and 39). The TESS light curves yield significant transit events of two companions, which show strong transit timing variations (TTVs) with a semi-amplitude of a $\sim$6 hours. We performed TTV dynamical, and photo-dynamical light curve analysis of the TESS data, combined with radial velocity (RV) measurements from FEROS and PFS, and we confirmed the planetary nature of these companions. The TOI-2525 system consists of a transiting pair of planets comparable to Neptune and Jupiter with estimated dynamical masses of $m_{\rm b}$ = 0.088$_{-0.004}^{+0.005}$ M$_{\rm Jup.}$, and $m_{\rm c}$ = 0.709$_{-0.033}^{+0.034}$ M$_{\rm Jup.}$, radius of $r_b$ = 0.88$_{-0.02}^{+0.02}$ R$_{\rm Jup.}$ and $r_c$ = 0.98$_{-0.02}^{+0.02}$ R$_{\rm Jup.}$, and with orbital periods of $P_{\rm b}$ = 23.288$_{-0.002}^{+0.001}$ days and $P_{\rm c}$ = 49.260$_{-0.001}^{+0.001}$ days for the inner and the outer planet, respectively. The period ratio is close to the 2:1 period commensurability, but the dynamical simulations of the system suggest that it is outside the mean motion resonance (MMR) dynamical configuration. TOI-2525 b is among the lowest density Neptune-mass planets known to date, with an estimated median density of $\rho_{\rm b}$ = 0.174$_{-0.015}^{+0.016}$ g\,cm$^{-3}$. The TOI-2525 system is very similar to the other K-dwarf systems discovered by TESS, TOI-2202 and TOI-216, which are composed of almost identical K-dwarf primary and two warm giant planets near the 2:1 MMR., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ

Coherent control of ensembles of light emitters by means of multi-wave mixing processes is key for the realization of high capacity optical quantum memories and information processing devices. In this context, semiconductor quantum dots placed in optical microcavities represent excellent candidates to explore strong light-matter interactions beyond the limits of perturbative non-linear optics and control the unitary evolution of optically driven quantum systems. In this work, we demonstrate that a sequence of two optical picosecond pulses can be used to establish coherent control over the phase evolution of the ensemble of trions in (In,Ga)As quantum dots independent of their initial quantum state. Our approach is based on coherent transfer between degenerate multi-wave-mixing signals in the strong field limit where Rabi rotations in multi-level systems take place. In particular, we use the two-pulse photon echo sequence to uncover the coherent dynamics of the trion ensemble, whereas the areas of two additional control pulses serve as tuning knobs for adjusting the magnitude and timing of the coherent emission. Furthermore, we make use of the spin degeneracy of ground and excited state of trions to control the polarization state of the emitted signal. Surprisingly, we reveal that the use of optical control pulses, whose durations are comparable to the dephasing time of the ensemble, lifts the temporal degeneracy between wave-mixing processes of different order. This phenomenon is manifested in a significant modification of the temporal shape of the coherent optical response for strong optical fields. Lifting the temporal degeneracy allows to smoothly trace the transition from the perturbative to the regime of Rabi rotations and opens up new possibilities for the optical investigation of complex energy level structures in so far unexplored material systems.

In this letter we present an improved distributed video coding (DVC) scheme based on polar coding techniques. Firstly, we adapt log-likelihood ratios (LLRs) for DVC with integer implementation of a discrete cosine transform (DCT). We propose a computationally efficient and numerically stable modification of these LLRs based on the simplified methods of polar codes decoding. We show that on average this approach provides 0.3 dB PSNR gain for DVC with LDPC accumulated (LDPCA) codes. Secondly, we introduce the nested shortened polar codes construction algorithm. We demonstrate that replacement of LDPCA by polar codes improves PSNR by 0.1 dB on average, whereas, for videos with relatively high motion level, the gain reaches up to 0.23, 0.39 and 0.55 dB for Group of Pictures (GOP) lengths 2, 4 and 8 frames, respectively. Finally, experimental results demonstrate that DVC with polar codes and Tal-Vardy list decoder operates up to two times faster than DVC with LDPCA code and belief propagation (BP) decoder., Comment: This is a slightly modified version of a paper accepted for publication in IEEE Communications Letters

One of the main scientific goals of the TESS mission is the discovery of transiting small planets around the closest and brightest stars in the sky. Here, using data from the CARMENES, MAROON-X, and HIRES spectrographs, together with TESS, we report the discovery and mass determination of a planetary system around the M1.5 V star GJ 806 (TOI-4481). GJ 806 is a bright (V=10.8 mag, J=7.3 mag) and nearby (d=12 pc) M dwarf that hosts at least two planets. The innermost planet, GJ 806 b, is transiting and has an ultra-short orbital period of 0.93 d, a radius of 1.331+-0.023 Re, a mass of 1.90+-0.17 Me, a mean density of 4.40+-0.45 g/cm3, and an equilibrium temperature of 940+-10 K. We detect a second, non-transiting, super-Earth planet in the system, GJ 806c, with an orbital period of 6.6 d, a minimum mass of 5.80+-0.30 Me, and an equilibrium temperature of 490+-5 K. The radial velocity data also shows evidence for a third periodicity at 13.6 d, although the current dataset does not provide sufficient evidence to unambiguously distinguish between a third super-Earth mass (Msin(i)=8.50+-0.45 Me) planet or stellar activity. Additionally, we report one transit observation of GJ 806 b taken with CARMENES in search for a possible extended atmosphere of H or He, but we can only place upper limits to its existence. This is not surprising as our evolutionary models support the idea that any possible primordial H/He atmosphere that GJ 806 b might have had, would long have been lost. However, GJ 806b's bulk density makes it likely that the planet hosts some type of volatile atmosphere. In fact, with a transmission spectroscopy metrics (TSM) of 44 and an emission spectroscopy metrics (ESM) of 24, GJ 806 b the third-ranked terrestrial planet around an M dwarf suitable for transmission spectroscopy studies, and the most promising terrestrial planet for emission spectroscopy studies., Comment: Under second review in A&A. We present the discovery of an Earth-mass planet ($M_b\sin i = 1.26\pm0.21M_\oplus$) on a 15.6d orbit of a relatively nearby ($d\sim$9.6pc) and low-mass ($0.167\pm0.011 M_\odot$) M5.0V star, Wolf 1069. Sitting at a separation of $0.0672\pm0.0014$au away from the host star puts Wolf 1069b in the habitable zone (HZ), receiving an incident flux of $S=0.652\pm0.029S_\oplus$. The planetary signal was detected using telluric-corrected radial-velocity (RV) data from the CARMENES spectrograph, amounting to a total of 262 spectroscopic observations covering almost four years. There are additional long-period signals in the RVs, one of which we attribute to the stellar rotation period. This is possible thanks to our photometric analysis including new, well-sampled monitoring campaigns undergone with the OSN and TJO facilities that supplement archival photometry (i.e., from MEarth and SuperWASP), and this yielded an updated rotational period range of $P_{rot}=150-170$d, with a likely value at $169.3^{+3.7}_{-3.6}$d. The stellar activity indicators provided by the CARMENES spectra likewise demonstrate evidence for the slow rotation period, though not as accurately due to possible factors such as signal aliasing or spot evolution. Our detectability limits indicate that additional planets more massive than one Earth mass with orbital periods of less than 10 days can be ruled out, suggesting that perhaps Wolf 1069 b had a violent formation history. This planet is also the 6th closest Earth-mass planet situated in the conservative HZ, after Proxima Centauri b, GJ 1061d, Teegarden's Star c, and GJ 1002 b and c. Despite not transiting, Wolf 1069b is nonetheless a very promising target for future three-dimensional climate models to investigate various habitability cases as well as for sub-ms$^{-1}$ RV campaigns to search for potential inner sub-Earth-mass planets in order to test planet formation theories., Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures

We study topological properties of automorphisms of a 6-dimensional torus generated by integer matrices symplectic with respect to either the standard symplectic structure in six-dimensional linear space or a nonstandard symplectic structure given by an integer skew-symmetric non-degenerate matrix. Such a symplectic matrix generates a partially hyperbolic automorphism of the torus, if it has eigenvalues both outside and on the unit circle. We study the case (2,2,2), numbers are dimensions of stable, center and unstable subspaces of the matrix.
