Abstract

This report documents an analysis of the effects of the introduction of civil tiltrotor (CTR) service on en route airspace loads. The analysis is intended as one in a set of analyses designed to provide information to senior decision makers and other interested parties on the potential effects of CTR service on National Airspace System performance. The analysis uses a demand scenario that addresses the introduction of CTR services into the Northeast Corridor of the United States using several simplifying assumptions. This report also includes an update on the previously published report "Civil Tiltrotor Northeast Corridor Delay Analysis (Based on the Demand Scenario Described in Civil Tiltrotor and Applications Phase II: The Commercial Passenger Market)", FAA/AOR-100/93/013. (This document is based on briefing materials developed to report on the results of this analysis. Abstract

This paper examines a mathematical programming method of accounting for capacity costs for the deter- ministic, multi-item, single operation lot sizing problem. With the capacity constraints of CLSP removed with Lagrangian relaxation, the problem decomposes into a set of uncapacitated single product lot sizing problems which are solved with dynamic programming. The Lagrangian dual costs are updated by subgradient optimization. Feasible solutions (production plans within the capacity limitations) are constructed with a heuristic smoothing procedure. The dual-cost heuristic gave solutions which were better on average than the other algorithms tested (and was faster than some comparable algorithms). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Cyclic assembly schedules are schedules which follow a repeating production pattern. Each component is produced at times that are integer multiples of the base planning period of the finished product. These schedules have the managerial advantages of ease of control and planning, since future production follows a familiar, repeating pattern. Establishing and maintaining such a schedule requires a system to protect the schedule when bottlenecks occur. This paper discusses some of these issues and describes a simple method for calculating the optimal parameters of a cyclic schedule in a multistage assembly operation when production intervals are power-of-two multiples of a base period specified by management. The cycles are based on an Economic Order Quantity analysis, which is applicable if demand for the end items is fairly steady as in the case of a facility that supplies components to an assembly line.
