Circulating levels of the soluble ligand-binding ectodomain of the LDL receptor (sLDLR) that is proteolytically cleaved from the cell surface have been shown to correlate with plasma triglycerides, but the lipid and lipoprotein effects of longitudinal changes in sLDLR have not been examined. We sought to assess associations between changes in sLDLR and detailed lipoprotein measurements between baseline and 6 months in participants in the DIETFITS (Diet Intervention Examining The Factors Interacting with Treatment Success) weight loss trial who were randomly assigned to the low-fat (n = 225) or low-carbohydrate (n = 236) diet arms. sLDLR was assayed using a proteomic procedure, lipids and apoprotein (apo) B and apoAI were measured by standard assays, and lipoprotein particle subfractions were quantified by ion mobility methodology. Changes in sLDLR were significantly positively associated with changes in plasma cholesterol, triglycerides, apoB, large-sized and medium-sized VLDL, and small and very small LDL, and inversely with changes in large LDL and HDL. The lipoprotein subfraction associations with sLDLR were independent of age, sex, diet, and BMI, but all except for large LDL were reduced to insignificance when adjusted for triglyceride change. Principal component analysis identified three independent clusters of changes in lipoprotein subfractions that accounted for 78% of their total variance. Change in sLDLR was most strongly correlated with change in the principal component that was loaded positively with large VLDL and small and very small LDL and negatively with large LDL and HDL. In conclusion, sLDLR is a component of a cluster of lipids and lipoproteins that are characteristic of atherogenic dyslipidemia.

Previous studies have reported that a potential association between exposure to outdoor light at night (LAN) and diseases. However, there is no evidence regarding the impacts of outdoor LAN exposure on lipid metabolism in humans. This study aims to evaluate the associations between outdoor LAN exposure and the prevalence of dyslipidemia, using a nationwide sample of 10,894 adults aged ≥ 45 years from 150 investigated sites across China in 2011–2012. Outdoor LAN exposure was assessed by using satellite imaging data. The prevalence ratio (PR) was calculated. The present study found that a per-quintile LAN exposure was positively associated with the prevalence of high LDL-cholesterol (PR = 1.10, 95% CI = 1.04–1.16), high triglyceride (PR = 1.07, 95% CI = 1.03–1.12), low HDL-cholesterol (PR = 1.11, 95% CI = 1.08–1.16), and dyslipidemia (PR = 1.06, 95% CI = 1.03–1.09). The fifth quintile of LAN exposure was associated with a significantly increased prevalence of dyslipidemia (PR = 1.20, 95% CI = 1.07–1.35) compared with the first quintile of exposure. Long-term exposure to outdoor LAN was positively associated with dyslipidemia prevalence. Background: No specific triglyceride-lowering therapy is recommended in patients with hypertriglyceridemia-associated acute pancreatitis (HTG-AP), primarily because of the lack of quality evidence. This study aimed to describe practice variations in triglyceride-lowering therapies for early HTG-AP patients and assess whether more rapid triglyceride decline is associated with improving organ failure. Methods: This is a multicentre, prospective cohort study recruiting HTG-AP patients with elevated plasma triglyceride (> 11.3 mmol/L) admitted within 72 h from the onset of symptoms. Patients were dichotomised on study day 3 into either target reaching (plasma triglyceride ≤ 5.65 mmol/L) or not. The primary outcome was organ failure-free days (OFFD) to 14 days of enrolment. The association between target-reaching and OFFD was modelled. Additionally, the slope in plasma triglyceride over the first three days in response to treatment was calculated, and its association with OFFD was assessed as a sensitivity analysis. Results: Among the 300 enrolled patients, 211 underwent exclusive medical treatment, and 89 underwent various blood purification therapies. Triglyceride levels were available in 230 patients on study day 3, among whom 122 (53.0%) had triglyceride levels of ≤ 5.65 mmol/l. The OFFD was not different between these patients and those in whom plasma triglyceride remained > 5.65 mmol/L [median (IQR): 13 (10–14) vs. 14 (10–14), p = 0.46], even after adjustment for potential confounders. For the decline slopes, there was no significant change in OFFD with a steeper decline slope [risk difference, − 0.088, 95% CI, − 0.334 to 0.158, p = 0.48]. Conclusions: Triglyceride-lowering therapies vary greatly across centres. More rapid triglyceride decline was not associated with improving incidence and duration of organ failure. AbstractBackgroundMaterials and methodsResultsConclusions\nHIGHLIGHTSThis study aimed to provide a comprehensive synthesis of the evidence examining lipid profiles in drug-naïve MDD patients.We searched PubMed, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science up to August 2023 for total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, and triglyceride levels in drug-naïve MDD patients.A total of 17 articles comprising 2174 individuals including drug-naïve MDD subjects and controls were included. Our results showed that concentrations of total cholesterol were lower in drug-naïve MDD patients compared with healthy controls (SMD −0.49, 95% CI −0.881 to −0.105; p = 0.015; I2 = 90.6%). However, comparison of other lipid levels between MDD patients and healthy controls demonstrated no significant difference. The results revealed that the association of total cholesterol levels with MDD is more prominent in male-dominant studies (SMD −1.20, 95% CI −2.23 to −0.18, I2 = 87.9%) than in female-dominant studies (SMD −0.25, 95% CI −0.63–0.13, I2 = 89.0%). Introduction: Diabesity, characterized by obesity-driven Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), arises from intricate genetic and environmental interplays that induce various metabolic disorders. The systemic lipid and glucose homeostasis is controlled by an intricate cross-talk of internal glucose/insulin and fatty acid molecules to maintain a steady state of internal environment. Methods: In this study, Caenorhabditis elegans were maintained to achieve glucose concentrations resembling the hyperglycemic conditions in diabetic patients to delve into the mechanistic foundations of diabesity. Various assays were conducted to measure intracellular triglyceride levels, lifespan, pharyngeal pumping rate, oxidative stress indicators, locomotor behavior, and dopamine signaling. Proteomic analysis was also performed to identify differentially regulated proteins and dysregulated KEGG pathways, and microscopy and immunofluorescence staining were employed to assess collagen production and anatomical integrity. Results: Worms raised on diets high in glucose and cholesterol exhibited notably increased intracellular triglyceride levels, a decrease in both mean and maximum lifespan, and reduced pharyngeal pumping. The diabesity condition induced oxidative stress, evident from heightened ROS levels and distinct FT-IR spectroscopy patterns revealing lipid and protein alterations. Furthermore, impaired dopamine signaling and diminished locomotors behavior in diabesity-afflicted worms correlated with reduced motility. Through proteomic analysis, differentially regulated proteins encompassing dysregulated KEGG pathways included insulin signaling, Alzheimer's disease, and nicotinic acetylcholine receptor signaling pathways were observed. Moreover, diabesity led to decreased collagen production, resulting in anatomical disruptions validated through microscopy and immunofluorescence staining. The lipid accumulation product (LAP) is a novel, sex-specific indicator of lipid accumulation. While previous studies have investigated the relationship between LAP and diabetes, they have not specifically addressed potential sex differences in this association. The present study explores the potential sex-specific differences in the relationship between LAP and diabetes mellitus (DM) risk in the Japanese population. From 2004 to 2015, a total of 15,263 Japanese individuals without DM underwent physical assessments at Murakami Memorial Hospital. The association between LAP and incident diabetes was analyzed using Cox proportional hazards regression models, incorporating cubic spline functions and smooth curve fitting to identify potential non-linear relationships. Subgroup and sensitivity analysis assessments were conducted to validate the robustness of our findings. After adjusting for covariates, a positive association between LAP and DM risk was observed in both females (HR: 1.02, 95% CI: 1.00-1.03, P = 0.0138) and males (HR: 1.01, 95% CI: 1.00-1.01, P = 0.0314). A non-linear association between LAP and incident DM was identified for both sexes. The inflection points for LAP were 16.58 for females and 11.11 for males. In females, the HR to the left and right of the inflection point were 1.09 (95% CI: 1.02–1.17) and 1.01 (95% CI: 1.00-1.03), respectively. In males, the HR to the left and right of the inflection point were 0.92 (95% CI: 0.86–0.98) and 1.01 (95% CI: 1.00-1.01), respectively. Sensitivity analysis indicated a stronger association between LAP and DM risk. Elevated baseline LAP levels were associated with an increased risk of incident DM, with the relationship exhibiting non-linear characteristics. Background: The triglyceride–glucose (TyG) index has garnered recognition as a surrogate marker for insulin resistance, a pivotal factor in the pathogenesis of various metabolic disorders. Despite its emerging role, the empirical evidence delineating its association with prediabetes mellitus (Pre-DM) remains scant. This research aims to clarify the link between the TyG index and the likelihood of Pre-DM development within a Chinese demographic. Methods: This investigation was structured as a retrospective cohort analysis, encompassing a sample of 179,177 Chinese adults. These individuals underwent medical examinations at the Rich Healthcare Group over a period spanning from 2010 to 2016. To ascertain the relationship between the TyG index and the incidence of Pre-DM, this study employed Cox regression analysis complemented by sensitivity and subgroup assessments. Furthermore, Cox proportional hazards regression with cubic spline functions and smooth curve fitting was incorporated to explore the existence of any non-linear connection within this association. Results: Upon adjusting for a comprehensive array of confounding variables, a statistically significant positive correlation between the TyG index and the risk of Pre-DM was identified (HR: 1.60, 95%CI 1.56–1.65, P < 0.001). The analysis illuminated a non-linear relationship, with an inflection point at a TyG index value of 8.78. For TyG index values below and above this inflection point, the HR was calculated to be 1.94 (95%CI 1.86–2.03) and 1.26 (95%CI 1.20–1.33), respectively. Sensitivity analyses further fortified the reliability of these findings. Conclusions: This comprehensive examination delineated a significantly positive, non-linear correlation between the TyG index and the risk of Pre-DM within a Chinese population. In our previous study, circ_015343 was found to inhibit the viability and proliferation of ovine mammary epithelial cells (OMECs) and the expression levels of milk fat synthesis marker genes, but the regulatory mechanism underlying the processes is still unclear. Accordingly in this study, the target relationships between circ_015343 with miR‐25 and between miR‐25 with insulin induced gene 1 (INSIG1) were verified, and the functions of miR‐25 and INSIG1 were investigated in OMECs. The dual‐luciferase reporter assay revealed that miR‐25 mimic remarkably decreased the luciferase activity of circ_015343 in HEK293T cells cotransfected with a wild‐type vector, while it did not change the activity of circ_015343 in HEK293T cells cotransfected with a mutant vector. These suggest that cic_015343 can adsorb and bind miR‐25. The miR‐25 increased the viability and proliferation of OMECs, and the content of triglycerides in OMECs. In addition, INSIG1 was found to be a target gene of miR‐25 using a dual‐luciferase reporter assay. Overexpression of INSIG1 decreased the viability, proliferation, and level of triglycerides of OMECs. In contrast, the inhibition of INSIG1 in expression had the opposite effect on activities and triglycerides of OMECs with overexpressed INSIG1. A rescue experiment revealed that circ_015343 alleviated the inhibitory effect of miR‐25 on the mRNA and protein abundance of INSIG1. These results indicate that circ_015343 sponges miR‐25 to inhibit the activities and content of triglycerides of OMECs by upregulating the expression of INSIG1 in OMECs. The biological rhythms generated by the endogenous circadian clocks across the tree of life regulate numerous behavioral, metabolic, and physiological processes. Although evidence from various studies in Drosophila melanogaster indicates the importance of the core circadian clock genes in the intricate interplay between the circadian clock and metabolism, little is known about the contribution of the circadian photoreceptor/s in this process. The deep brain circadian photoreceptor CRYPTOCHROME (CRY) is essential for resetting the clock in response to light and is also highly expressed in metabolically active tissues in Drosophila. In this study, we sought to explore the possible roles played by CRY in triglyceride (TG) metabolism. We observed that the cry mutant (cry01) flies exhibited increased starvation resistance and TG levels under both 12-hour (h) light:12-h dark cycle (LD) and under constant light compared with the control w1118 flies. We also observed that cry01 flies had significantly increased food intake, glycogen concentrations, and lifespan under LD. In addition, cryptochrome seemed to affect TG levels in adult flies in response to calorie-restricted and high-fat diets. Background: The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, recognized for its cost)efficiency and simplicity, serves as an accessible indicator of insulin resistance. Yet, its correlation with the risk of prediabetes and diabetes (Pre-DM/DM) in the Chinese demographic remains uncertain. Consequently, our study explored the association between the TyG index and the development of Pre-DM/DM within the Chinese population. Methods: The retrospective cohort study was carried out utilizing data from a health screening initiative. The study included 179541 adults over 20 who underwent medical examinations at the Rich Healthcare Group over a period spanning from 2010 to 2016. The correlation between the TyG index and Pre-DM/DM risk was investigated using Cox regression analysis. Furthermore, Cox proportional hazards regression with cubic spline functions and smooth curve fitting was incorporated to explore their non-linear connection. Results: The mean age of study participants was 41.18 ± 12.20 years old, and 95255 (53.05%) were male. During a median follow-up of 3.01 years, 21281 (11.85%) participants were diagnosed with Pre-DM/DM. After adjusting the potential confounding factors, the results showed that the TyG index was positively correlated with incident Pre-DM/DM (HR: 1.67, 95%CI: 1.62-1.71, P< 0.001). Additionally, a non-linear association was observed between the TyG index and the onset of Pre-DM/DM, with an inflection point identified at 8.73. Hazard ratios (HR) to the left and right of this inflection point were 1.95 (95%CI: 1.86-2.04) and 1.34 (95%CI: 1.27-1.42), respectively. Furthermore, sensitivity analyses confirmed the stability of these findings. Conclusion: The TyG index exhibited a non-linear positive relationship with the risk of Pre-DM/DM. Malnutrition and insulin resistance are linked to complications like delirium, yet their impact on elderly heart failure patients remains underexplored. This study investigates how nutritional status and the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index influence delirium in this population. We conducted a retrospective study involving patients aged 75 and older with decompensated heart failure. Delirium was assessed using the Confusion Assessment Method (CAM), and nutritional status was evaluated with the Mini Nutritional Assessment Scale-Short Form (MNA-SF). The TyG index was calculated as: TyG index = ln [triglycerides (mg/dL) × fasting glucose (mg/dL) / 2]. The study included 412 patients (mean age 84.30 ± 5.16 years; 56.31% male), with 24.03% experiencing delirium during hospitalization. After adjusting for confounders, a higher TyG index was significantly associated with increased delirium risk (OR = 1.549, 95% CI: 1.102–2.178, P = 0.012), while a higher MNA-SF score correlated with reduced risk (OR = 0.793, 95% CI: 0.662–0.949, P = 0.011). Kaplan-Meier analysis showed significant differences in cumulative survival based on nutritional status and TyG index (Log-Rank test: χ²= 65.604, P < 0.001). Mediation analysis indicated that nutritional status partially mediated the relationship between the TyG index and delirium, and vice versa. Malnutrition and elevated TyG index levels increase delirium risk in elderly heart failure patients, underscoring the need for effective nutritional management and metabolic regulation. This study aimed to determine the effect of adding nuts to a regular breakfast on blood glucose, insulin, and triglyceride levels, and to evaluate participants' opinions by sex as a preliminary study for future studies. Data and biochemical parameters were collected through face-to-face interviews with Acibadem Hospital employees (n = 12) between April and September 2023. Participants consumed 30 g of nut-supplemented breakfasts for 4 weeks while maintaining their regular lifestyle. Blood tests and visual analog scale (VAS) parameters were assessed on intervention days. VAS scores indicated differences in meal taste, post-breakfast well-being, satiety, and meal adequacy, and for "feeling better after breakfast", and "providing better satiety", were significantly higher for the nut-supplemented breakfasts (p < 0.05), especially walnut-supplemented. Under the control of age, sex, and BMI variables in the participants, women responded better to peanut butter consumption than men in terms of blood insulin and triglyceride regulation (p < 0.05). However, triglyceride regulation in men was better managed by walnut consumption than in women. Understanding how nut-supplemented breakfasts impact blood glucose, insulin, and triglyceride levels, as well as consumer perceptions, is crucial for promoting healthier dietary choices. Background: The prognostic significance of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in patients with unstable angina (UA) based on remnant cholesterol (RC) or triglyceride (TG) levels remains unclear. This study aims to evaluate the effects of the interaction between RC, TG, and OSA on cardiovascular outcomes in UA patients. Methods: In this prospective cohort study, OSA was diagnosed when apnea-hypopnea index of ≥ 15 events/h. Patients with high RC (HRC, n = 370) or high TG (HTG, n = 362) included RC or TG in the highest tertile, and those in the middle and lowest tertiles were defined as normal RC (NRC, n = 736) or normal TG (NTG, n = 744). The primary endpoint was major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE), including cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, ischemia stroke, ischemia-driven revascularization, or hospitalization for UA. Results: A total of 1,106 eligible UA patients were enrolled, among which 560 (50.6%) had OSA. RC and TG levels were increased in OSA patients, but there was no difference in the prevalence of OSA between the NRC and HRC or NTG and HTG groups. During a median follow-up of 1.9 (1.1, 3.0) years, OSA was associated with an increased risk of MACCE occurrence compared to non-OSA in UA patients with HRC (adjusted HR 2.06; 95% CI 1.20–3.51, P = 0.008), but not in those with NRC (adjusted HR 1.21; 95% CI 0.84–1.75, P = 0.297). The incremental risk in HRC was attributable to higher rates of hospitalization for UA and ischemia-driven revascularization. Results for HTG and NTG were similar. Conclusion: OSA was associated with a worse prognosis in UA patients with HRC or HTG, emphasizing the necessity of identifying OSA presence in this population. Critical illness causes disturbances in lipid metabolism. Here, we investigated the levels of apolipoprotein A-IV (apoA-IV), a regulator of triglyceride and cholesterol metabolism, in human sepsis. ApoA-IV (analyzed in 156 patients with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS)/sepsis) and cholesteryl ester (CE) (analyzed in 121 of these patients) were lower in patients compared to 43 healthy controls. In contrast, triglyceride (TG) levels were elevated in patients. ApoA-IV levels in plasma of the patients did not correlate with these lipids. Patients with SIRS, sepsis or septic shock had comparable apoA-IV, TG, CE and free cholesterol (FC) levels. Patients on dialysis had significantly lower CE levels, whereas apoA-IV levels did not change much. CE levels were elevated in patients with viral sepsis due to SARS-CoV-2 infection in comparison to SIRS/sepsis patients not infected by this virus. CE levels correlated negatively with procalcitonin, interleukin-6 and bilirubin, while TGs were positively associated with bilirubin and C-reactive protein. ApoA-IV, TG, CE and FC levels were not associated with bacterial infection or survival. Purpose: This study estimated an individual’s genetic liability to cardiometabolic risk factors by polygenic risk score (PRS) construction and examined whether high cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) modifies the association between PRS and cardiometabolic risk factors. Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled 1296 Japanese adults aged ≥40 yr. The PRS for each cardiometabolic trait (blood lipids, glucose, hypertension, and obesity) was calculated using the LDpred2 and clumping and thresholding methods. Participants were divided into low-, intermediate-, and high-PRS groups according to PRS tertiles for each trait. CRF was quantified as peak oxygen uptake (V̇O2peak) per kilogram body weight. Participants were divided into low-, intermediate-, and high-CRF groups according to the tertile V̇O 2peak value. Results: Linear regression analysis revealed a significant interaction between PRS for triglyceride (PRSTG) and CRF groups on serum TG levels regardless of the PRS calculation method, and the association between PRSTG and TG levels was attenuated in the high-CRF group. Logistic regression analysis revealed a significant sub-additive interaction between LDpred2 PRSTG and CRF on the prevalence of high TG, indicating that high CRF attenuated the genetic predisposition to high TG. Furthermore, a significant sub-additive interaction between PRS for body mass index and CRF on obesity was detected regardless of the PRS calculation method. These significant interaction effects on high TG and obesity were diminished in the sensitivity analysis using V̇O2peak per kilogram fat-free mass as the CRF index. Background: Growing research underscores the significance of diet quality in the development of Metabolic Syndrome (MetS). Our study investigates the correlation between the Global Diet Quality Score (GDQS) and MetS, along with its components, in Iranian adults. Methods: This study utilizes data from the Yazd Health Study (YaHS) and includes a final analysis of 2,904 participants aged 20–70 years. Dietary data were gathered using food frequency questionnaires. MetS was defined in line with the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP ATP III) criteria. GDQS was derived by totaling the points across all 25 food groups, with scores ranging from 0 to 49. To examine the association between GDQS and MetS, multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted in both crude and adjusted models. Results: Participants who had the highest adherence to GDQS had a 20% lower chance of having MetS than those who had the lowest adherence after adjusting for confounding variables in Model II (T3 vs. T1: OR = 0.80; 95% CI: 0.46–0.99, P-trend = 0.045). There was no association between GDQS and MetS components including increased blood pressure, fasting blood glucose (FBG), triglyceride, abdominal obesity and reduced high-density lipoprotein (HDL) in crude and adjusted models. Objective: To delineate the clinical characteristics of preterm birth (PTB) in the context of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted, including 14,314 pregnant women with GDM who delivered at Fujian Provincial Maternity and Children's Hospital from January 1, 2018, to December 31, 2021. PTB was stratified into late PTB (34–36 weeks of gestation) and early PTB (< 34 weeks) and pregnancy complications were analyzed. Results: Compared to the term birth (TB) cohort, a higher prevalence of premature rupture of membranes, hypertensive diseases of pregnancy (HDP), intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP), anemia and cervical insufficiency was observed in the PTB cohort. Notably, early PTB increased the incidence of HDP, ICP, anemia and cervical insufficiency compared to late PTB. In the early stages of pregnancy, early PTB was characterized by elevated triglyceride (TG) levels and decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels compared to late PTB. In the late pregnancy stages, early PTB was associated with increased white blood cell (WBC) and neutrophil counts. No disparities were observed in 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) between early and late PTB. Conclusion: Enhanced surveillance and management of GDM, particularly in the presence of HDP, ICP and anemia, are imperative to mitigate the risk of PTB. Dyslipidemia is an important risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Although low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is primarily responsible, the importance of triglyceride (TG) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) has also been recognized. The present study investigated the effect of the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), in which atherogenic and protective lipoproteins were evaluated together, on the initial flow in patients with ST elevation myocardial infarction. AIP was calculated as log(TG/HDL-cholesterol). Patients included in the study (n = 1535) were divided into Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) flow grade 0 and >0. AIP was found to be significantly different between 2 groups (.55 ±.23 vs.67 ±.21; P <.001). AIP was an independent predictor for pre-intervention TIMI flow (Odds Ratio: 2.778). A moderate correlation was found between TIMI frame count measurements, calculated in patients with TIMI 2–3, and AIP (Pearson correlation coefficient:.63, P <.001). In the receiver operating characteristic analysis, AIP showed the highest area under curve (AUC) compared with other lipid parameters for predicting vascular patency. The AUC of AIP was.634, the cut-off value was.59, and the sensitivity and specificity were 67.6% and 68.4%, respectively (P <.001). Background: Worldwide, stroke is the commonest cause of chronic adult disability. Hyperuricemia is said to predict first ever stroke. Uric acid has both prooxidant and antioxidant effects. So this study was taken up to find whether high uric acid levels are beneficial or associated with risk in acute stroke. Aim: This study aims to determine the serum uric acid levels in acute stroke patients and assess its relationship with cerebrovascular risk factors. Material & Methods: This was a cross sectional study done in stroke patients admitted to the General Medicine department of Government Medical College, Thrissur during the period of January 2017 to December 2017. 82 participants with acute stroke (ischemic stroke or intracranial hemorrhage) were included in this study. Uric acid levels were estimated by uricase method. The serum uric acid levels and its relationship with cerebrovascular risk factors namely hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking, history of ischemic heart disease, dyslipidemia, and valvular heart disease were determined. Significance for association between cerebrovascular risk factors and uric acid levels was tested using Chi Square test. Results: 61% of participants belonged to the age group of 56-75yrs. Out of total 82 participants, 60 had ischemic stroke and 22 had hemorrhagic stroke. Mean uric acid levels were 6.13 + 0.46 mg/dl and 36 participants were hyperuricemic. Serum uric acid was found to be significantly higher in men (6.63 + 1.32) compared to women (5.57 + 1.43). There was a significant positive correlation between serum uric acid concentration and triglyceride levels in patients with acute stroke. No significant association was obtained between serum uric acid levels and cerebrovascular risk factors including diabetes mellitus, hypertension, smoking, history of ischemic heart disease, dyslipidemia, valvular heart disease, previous history of cerebrovascular accident and stroke type (p > 0.05) . Cholangiocarcinoma is a fatal disease with limited therapeutic options. We screened genes required for cholangiocarcinoma tumorigenicity and identified FADS2, a delta‐6 desaturase. FADS2 depletion reduced in vivo tumorigenicity and cell proliferation. In clinical samples, FADS2 was expressed in cancer cells but not in stromal cells. FADS2 inhibition also reduced the migration and sphere‐forming ability of cells and increased apoptotic cell death and ferroptosis markers. Lipidome assay revealed that triglyceride and cholesterol ester levels were decreased in FADS2‐knockdown cells. The oxygen consumption ratio was also decreased in FADS2‐depleted cells. These data indicate that FADS2 depletion causes a reduction in lipid levels, resulting in decrease of energy production and attenuation of cancer cell malignancy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Concerns have been raised regarding changes in lipid profiles among patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) during tenofovir alafenamide fumarate (TAF) treatment. We aimed to evaluate the effect of TAF treatment on the lipid profiles of patients with CHB. Methods: A total of 430 patients with CHB from three hospitals were retrospectively included, including 158 patients treated with TAF and 272 patients treated with tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF). Results: In this multicenter cohort, the cumulative incidence of dyslipidemia was notably higher in the TAF group than in the TDF group (P < 0.001). After TAF treatment, a significant elevation was observed in triglyceride (TG) levels (from 0.83 mmol/L to 1.02 mmol/L, P < 0.001) and total cholesterol (TC) levels (from 4.16 mmol/L to 4.32 mmol/L, P < 0.001). Similar changes in TG and TC levels were observed in the TAF group after propensity score matching (PSM). The TG levels (from 0.83 mmol/L to 1.04 mmol/L, P < 0.001) and TC levels (from 4.16 mmol/L to 4.38 mmol/L, P < 0.001) were both increased significantly compared to the baseline levels in the PSM cohort of patients treated with TAF. TAF treatment was independently associated with elevated TG levels (HR = 2.800, 95% CI: 1.334–5.876, P = 0.006) and TC levels (HR = 9.045, 95% CI: 3.836–21.328, P < 0.001). Conclusions: Compared with TDF treatment, TAF treatment was associated with dyslipidemia in patients with CHB. Introduction: Sleep disorders, particularly insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea, are associated with dyslipidemia in the general population. The study's aim was to explore the association between pathological Cholesterol and Triglyceride levels, and sleep and nighttime behavior disorders (SNBD) in older adults, whether they might predict SNBD onset, and to emphasize the role of body mass index (BMI) in this association. Methods: Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) population with complete Cholesterol, Triglyceride, SNBD, and neurocognitive data were included. Logistic regression was performed to study the association between hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and SNBD at baseline and at 12 months. Relevant confounders, particularly BMI, were adjusted for. Results: Among the 2,216 included cases, 1,045 (47%) were females, and the median age was 73 years (IQR: 68, 78). At baseline, 357 (16%) had SNBD and 327 (18%) at 12 months; 187 of them were incident cases. There were more cases of baseline SNBD in the hypertriglyceridemia group than in those without (19% vs. 14%, P-value = 0.003). Similarly, more follow-up SNBD cases had hypertriglyceridemia at baseline (21% vs. 16%, P-value = 0.025). SNBD cases at baseline had significantly higher serum Triglyceride levels than those without (132 vs. 118mg/dL, P-value < 0.001). Only hypertriglyceridemia was significantly associated with baseline SNBD (crude OR = 1.43, 95%CI: 1.13,1.80, P-value = 0.003), even after adjustment for confounding factors (adj. OR = 1.36, 95%CI: 1.06,1.74, P-value = 0.016) and (BMI-adj. OR = 1.29, 95%CI: 1.00,1.66, P-value = 0.048). None of the dyslipidemia forms did predict incident cases at 12 months. Conclusions: Hypertriglyceridemia, but not hypercholesterolemia, was associated with higher odds of SNBD. The association was independent of BMI. The Lamiaceae plant family has a positive impact on metabolic diseases. This study meta‐analyzed the data of different clinical trial studies on the impacts of these plants on blood lipid biomarkers including cholesterol, triglyceride, high‐density lipoprotein (HDL), and low‐density lipoprotein (LDL). A comprehensive search was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, ISI Web of Science, ProQuest, Scientific Information Database, MagIran, and Google Scholar to identify relevant published research up to December 20, 2023. The meta‐analysis revealed that the Lamiaceae family significantly reduced cholesterol (p < .001), triglyceride (p = .003), and LDL (p < .001) levels. The rise in HDL levels was not significantly impacted (p = .069). Subgroup studies revealed that Lamiaceae plants improve all lipid parameters for a short duration (≤8 weeks) while in a longer duration (>8 weeks) only LDL level is improved in the blood (p < .05). In addition, Lamiaceae plants specifically decreased LDL and cholesterol levels in diabetic patients and only LDL levels in the individuals who were hyperlipidemic or overweight/obese. Within the Lamiaceae family, the genera Satureja and Coleus had the most significant effects in decreasing triglyceride and LDL/cholesterol levels, respectively. Origanum was the only genus within the Lamiaceae family that significantly improved three lipid parameters (cholesterol, LDL, and HDL). Bombyx mori ELAV‐like‐1 (BmEL‐1) and B. mori ELAV‐like‐2 (BmEL‐2) are 2 members of the ELAV‐like family of RNA‐binding proteins. Mutations in Bmel‐1 and Bmel‐2 resulted in 5.8% and 28.5% decreases in larval weight on the 3rd day of the 5th instar larva (L5D3), respectively. Triglycerides (TG) are the most important energy resource and are the main component of neutral fat (NF) in animals. To investigate the role of Bmelav‐like genes in the synthesis and decomposition of TG, transcriptomic, and metabolic analyses were performed on the whole bodies on the 1st day of the 2nd instar larvae (L2D1) and on fat bodies on L5D3 of Bmel‐1− and Bmel‐2− mutants, respectively. As compared with the control silkworm, differentially expressed genes generated in both mutants were mainly enriched in lysine degradation, fatty acid (FA) metabolism, and unsaturated FAs biosynthesis. The diglyceride and phosphatide contents were significantly lower in Bmel‐1− and Bmel‐2− fat bodies than those of the control group. Consistently, the NF content of both mutants’ fat bodies were reduced by 50% and 60%, respectively. BmEL‐2 positively regulates BmAGPATγ (B. mori 1‐acyl‐sn‐glycerol‐3‐phosphate acyltransferase gamma, LOC101741736) and BmFaF2 (B. mori fatty acid synthetase‐associated factor 2, LOC101739090) expression by binding to the specific regions of their 3′ untranslated regions in BmN cells. Hypothesis: The physical and mechanical properties of triacylglycerols (TAGs), or 'fats', depend on their composition and thermal history which, in turn, impact crystal structure and morphology. We examine whether thermal history can be mechanistically related to film removal by a surfactant solution. Experiments: Model TAG mixtures, comprising triolein:tripalmitin:tristearin 0.5:0.3:0.2, were subjected to a range of cooling profiles from the melt (0.5-80 °C/min, Newtonian and annealed), and the resulting solid films characterised by microscopy, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and contact angle measurements. Film removal from a model glass substrate by an aqueous surfactant solution of sodium dodecylsulphate and dodecyldimethylamine oxide at room temperature fixed at 25 °C was examined under quiescent flow conditions. Findings: Quantitative relations are established between TAG cooling profile, crystal structure and morphology, surface energy γ S F E , and removal (or 'cleaning'). In general, films cooled slowly from the melt yield heterogeneous morphologies with predominantly β 1 ′ phase, higher polar γ S F E , and faster removal timescales. By contrast, rapid cooling results in homogeneous films, rich in β 2 ′ phase, low polar γ S F E , and long removal times. Our results elucidate the non-trivial impact of TAG thermal history, connecting the multiscale semi-crystalline structure to surface energy, and eventually to film delamination by micellar solutions. Background: The formation of macrosomia is associated with excessive nutrition and/or unable to regulate effectively. This case-control study aims to explore the relationship between macrosomia and glucose, lipids and hormones levels in maternal and cord serum. Methods: In the case-control study, 78 pairs of mothers and newborns were recruited who received care at one hospital of Hebei, China between 2016 and 2019. According to the birth weight (BW) of newborns, participants were divided into macrosomia group (BW ≥ 4000 g, n = 39) and control group (BW between 2500 g and 3999 g, n = 39). Maternal vein blood and cord vein blood were collected and assayed. All data were compared between the two groups. Unconditional logistics regression analysis was used to test the relationship between macrosomia and glucose, lipids and hormones in maternal and cord serum. Results: In maternal and cord serum, the levels of leptin, leptin/adiponectin ratio (LAR), glucose and triglyceride (TG) in macrosomia group were higher than those in control group, and the levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were lower. The percentage of maternal glucose and lipids transfer to cord blood did not differ between the two groups. High levels of TG in maternal serum were positively correlated with macrosomia, and high levels of LAR, TG and glucose in cord serum were positively correlated with macrosomia. Conclusion: In conclusion, the results of the current study, suggest that the nutrients and metabolism-related hormones in maternal and umbilical cord are closely related to macrosomia. Introduction: Obesity is a prevalent co-morbidity in Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), causing metabolic disturbances that lead to changes in endocrinological homeostasis. Adipokines are proinflammatory molecules secreted by adipose tissues that affect metabolic and endocrinological mechanisms. Excess androgen secretion alters fat distribution and deposition, leading to increased visceral obesity in PCOS, which is a major concern for the development of cardiometabolic events. Aim: To assess the Visceral Adiposity Index (VAI) and levels of different adipokines in non obese and obese PCOS patients, and to establish the relationship between VAI and circulating adipokines in both non obese and obese phenotypes of PCOS patients. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the Mayo Institute of Medical Sciences, Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, India from November 2019 to August 2021. A total of 144 patients diagnosed with PCOS according to the Rotterdam criteria were divided into non obese and obese categories based on Body Mass Index (BMI). VAI was calculated using a sex-specific formula, and serum levels of adiponectin, resistin, and leptin were measured by Enzyme Linked Immuno Sorbent Assay (ELISA). Fasting glucose, insulin, and serum lipid profiles were evaluated. Data were statistically analysed using Student's t-tests and Pearson's correlation coefficient. Weighted linear regression was used to detect any relationships between adipokines, obesity indicators, and VAI. Results: A total of 144 female patients with a mean age of 27.47±0.33 years suffering from PCOS were included in this study. VAI was significantly higher (p-value=0.034) in non obese patients than in obese patients. There was a significant correlation between VAI and resistin (r-value=0.302, p-value=0.011) and leptin (r-value=0.308, p-value=0.009) in the non obese PCOS group. Additionally, there was a significant association between obesity indicators {BMI, Body Fat Percentage (BFP), Waist Circumference (WC), and Hip Circumference (HC)} and VAI; this association was absent in the obese subgroup. According to the regression model, leptin was the only statistically relevant predictor for VAI among the studied PCOS patients (t-value=2.278, p-value=0.024). Conclusion: VAI was higher in non obese PCOS patients. An imbalance in adipokines (leptin and resistin) may lead to the accumulation of visceral fat without significantly affecting BMI. Background: Numerous epidemiological studies have shown that hypertriglyceridemia is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVD). However, large clinical studies on triglyceride‐lowering therapy have yielded inconsistent results. In the current review, we reassess the importance of triglyceride‐lowering therapy in preventing CVD based on previous literature and the recently published findings of the PROMINENT trial. Methods: This narrative review is based on literature and public documents published up to November 2023. Results: Meta‐analyses of trials on peroxisome proliferator‐activated receptor α agonists and triglyceride‐lowering therapy, including the PROMINENT trial, have indicated that triglyceride‐lowering therapy can reduce CVD events. Mendelian randomization studies have also indicated that triglyceride is indeed a true risk factor for coronary artery disease, leaving no doubt about its relationship to CVD. Meanwhile, the negative results from the PROMINENT trial were likely due to the insufficient triglyceride‐lowering effect, slight increases in low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol and apolipoprotein B, and the inclusion of mostly high‐intensity statin users as target patients. It is unlikely that adverse events counteracted the effectiveness of pemafibrate on outcomes. Additionally, pemafibrate has shown positive effects on non‐alcoholic fatty liver disease and peripheral artery disease. Conclusion: Although the PROMINENT trial did not demonstrate the significance of pemafibrate as a triglyceride‐lowering therapy in a specific population, it does not necessarily negate the potential benefits of treating hypertriglyceridemia in reducing CVD events. It is necessary to explore appropriate populations that could benefit from this therapy, utilize data from the PROMINENT trial and other databases, and validate findings in real‐world settings. Lecithin cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) plays a crucial role in acyl-esterifying cholesterol in plasma, which is essential for reverse cholesterol transport (RCT). Previous studies indicated that its activity on both α and β lipoproteins interpret its effects on lipoproteins for many controversial investigations of atherosclerosis. To better understand the relationship between LCAT, diet-induced dyslipidemia and atherosclerosis, we developed a double knockout (LCAT−/−&LDLR−/−, DKO) hamster model to evaluate the specific role of LCAT independent of LDL clearance effects. Plasma triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), and free cholesterol (FC) levels were measured using biochemical reagent kits. FPLC was performed to analyze the components of lipoproteins. Apolipoprotein content was assessed using western blotting (WB). The hamsters were fed a high cholesterol/high fat diet (HCHFD) to induce atherosclerosis. Oil Red O staining was employed to detect plaque formation. Peritoneal macrophages were studied to investigate the effects of LCAT on cholesterol uptake and efflux. On HCHFD, DKO hamsters exhibited significantly elevated levels of TG and FC, while HDL-C was nearly undetectable without affecting TC levels, as compared to low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR)-deficient (LDLR−/−, LKO) hamsters. Lipoprotein profiling revealed a marked increase in plasma chylomicron/very low-density lipoprotein (CM/VLDL) fractions, along with an unexpected reduction in LDL fraction in DKO hamsters. Furthermore, DKO hamsters displayed aggravated atherosclerotic lesions in the aorta, aortic root, and coronary artery relative to LKO hamsters, attributed to a pro-atherogenic lipoprotein profile and impaired cholesterol efflux in macrophages. Our study demonstrates the beneficial role of LCAT in inhibiting atherosclerotic development and highlights the distinctive lipid metabolism characteristics in hamsters with familial hypercholesterolemia. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of different lipid sources, with or without a probiotic, on the gastrointestinal tract, immune system and blood parameters of Ross 308 male chickens. In this study, 360 one‐day‐old chickens were randomly allotted to six treatments with six replicates. Experimental diets were: (1) control (CTL); (2) a diet containing 30 g/kg lipid from tallow (CTL+TLW); (3) a diet containing 30 g/kg lipid from soybean oil (CTL+SO); (4) the basal diet plus a probiotic (CTL+PRO), (5) a diet containing 30 g/kg tallow plus probiotic (TLW+PRO); and (6) a diet containing 30 g/kg soybean oil plus probiotic (SO+PRO). The percentage of liver and jejunum in the treatments that used tallow alone or tallow with probiotics had a significant increase as compared to the control. The villus height and crypt depth of the ileum and villus height/crypt depth in the treatments that used soybean oil and probiotic alone had a significant increase compared to the control. The weight of the spleen, bursa of Fabricius, and thymus in the treatments that used probiotics had a significant increase compared to the control. The amount of alkaline phosphatase and alanine aminotransferase as well as triacylglycerol in the treatment containing probiotic and its mixture with soybean oil had the least significant difference with the control. The results showed that the use of soybean oil, probiotics, and their mixture can improve intestinal morphology, strengthen the immune system, and reduce liver enzymes in chickens. Owing to differences in dietary preferences between men and women, the associations between dietary intake frequency and metabolic parameters may differ between the sexes. A retrospective observational study of the checkup findings of 3147 Japanese individuals (968 men, 2179 women) aged 20–59 years was conducted to examine differences in dietary habits and associations between food frequency and blood parameters (eGFR, HbA1c, uric acid, and lipids) by sex and age. Males were more likely to consume meat, fish, soft drinks, and alcohol, whereas women were more likely to consume soybeans, dairy products, vegetables, fruits, and snacks. Multivariate linear regression models adjusted for age and BMI revealed that meat intake frequency was positively associated with HbA1c (β = 0.007, p = 0.03) and negatively associated with eGFR (β = −0.3, p = 0.01) only in males, whereas fish intake frequency was positively associated with eGFR (β = 0.4, p = 0.005) only in females. Egg and soy intake frequencies were positively and negatively associated with non-HDL-C (egg: β = 0.6, p = 0.02; soy: β = −0.3, p = 0.03) only in females. Alcohol consumption frequency was associated with uric acid (M: β = 0.06, p < 0.001; F: β = 0.06, p < 0.001) and HDL-C (M: β = 1.0, p < 0.001; F: β = 1.3, p < 0.001) in both sexes. Future research is needed to determine whether varying the emphasis of dietary guidance by sex and age group is effective, since the effects of dietary preferences on metabolic parameters vary by age and sex. Background: Little is known about the relationship of physical activity (PA) and fitness with cardiometabolic risk among rural adolescents in low- and middle-income countries. Thus, we examined the associations of PA and fitness with selected cardiometabolic indicators along with potential gender-based differences in a birth cohort of rural adolescents from southeast Bangladesh. Methods: We utilized data from the 15-year follow-up of Maternal and Infant Nutrition Interventions in Matlab (MINIMat) cohort (n = 2253). Wrist-worn ActiGraph wGT3x-BT accelerometers were used to estimate sedentary time (ST) and PA. Fitness was assessed using: handgrip strength, standing long jump, and Chester Step Test. Anthropometric parameters, systolic blood pressure (SBP), and fasting lipid, insulin and glucose levels were measured. We calculated insulin resistance using the Homeostasis Model Assessment equation (HOMA-IR). Linear regression and isotemporal substitution models were fitted. Results: The adolescents spent 64 min/day (inter-quartile range: 50–81) in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). A 10-minute-per-day higher vigorous PA (VPA) was associated with: 4.9% (95% confidence interval (CI): 2.9–6.8%) lower waist circumference (WC), 3.2 mmHg (95% CI: 1.5–4.8) lower SBP, 10.4% (95% CI: 2.9–17.3%) lower TG, and 24.4% (95% CI: 11.3–34.9%) lower HOMA-IR. MVPA showed similar associations of notably smaller magnitude. Except for WC, the associations were more pronounced among the boys. Substituting ST with VPA of equal duration was associated with lower WC, SBP, triglyceride and HOMA-IR. Grip strength was favorably associated with all indicators, displaying considerably large effect sizes. Conclusion: Our findings indicated beneficial roles of PA– particularly VPA– and muscular fitness in shaping cardiometabolic profile in mid-adolescence. Abstract Previous studies have reported that a potential association between exposure to outdoor light at night (LAN) and diseases. However, there is no evidence regarding the impacts of outdoor LAN exposure on lipid metabolism in humans. This study aims to evaluate the associations between outdoor LAN exposure and the prevalence of dyslipidemia, using a nationwide sample of 10,894 adults aged ≥ 45 years from 150 investigated sites across China in 2011–2012. Outdoor LAN exposure was assessed by using satellite imaging data. The prevalence ratio (PR) was calculated. The present study found that a per-quintile LAN exposure was positively associated with the prevalence of high LDL-cholesterol (PR = 1.10, 95% CI = 1.04–1.16), high triglyceride (PR = 1.07, 95% CI = 1.03–1.12), low HDL-cholesterol (PR = 1.11, 95% CI = 1.08–1.16), and dyslipidemia (PR = 1.06, 95% CI = 1.03–1.09). The fifth quintile of LAN exposure was associated with a significantly increased prevalence of dyslipidemia (PR = 1.20, 95% CI = 1.07–1.35) compared with the first quintile of exposure. Long-term exposure to outdoor LAN was positively associated with dyslipidemia prevalence. Public policies aimed at reducing light pollution at night, guided by the spatial distribution patterns, could lessen the adverse effects.

Abstract Background No specific triglyceride-lowering therapy is recommended in patients with hypertriglyceridemia-associated acute pancreatitis (HTG-AP), primarily because of the lack of quality evidence. This study aimed to describe practice variations in triglyceride-lowering therapies for early HTG-AP patients and assess whether more rapid triglyceride decline is associated with improving organ failure. Methods This is a multicentre, prospective cohort study recruiting HTG-AP patients with elevated plasma triglyceride (> 11.3 mmol/L) admitted within 72 h from the onset of symptoms. Patients were dichotomised on study day 3 into either target reaching (plasma triglyceride ≤ 5.65 mmol/L) or not. The primary outcome was organ failure-free days (OFFD) to 14 days of enrolment. The association between target-reaching and OFFD was modelled. Additionally, the slope in plasma triglyceride over the first three days in response to treatment was calculated, and its association with OFFD was assessed as a sensitivity analysis. Results Among the 300 enrolled patients, 211 underwent exclusive medical treatment, and 89 underwent various blood purification therapies. Triglyceride levels were available in 230 patients on study day 3, among whom 122 (53.0%) had triglyceride levels of ≤ 5.65 mmol/l. The OFFD was not different between these patients and those in whom plasma triglyceride remained > 5.65 mmol/L [median (IQR): 13 (10–14) vs. 14 (10–14), p = 0.46], even after adjustment for potential confounders. For the decline slopes, there was no significant change in OFFD with a steeper decline slope [risk difference, − 0.088, 95% CI, − 0.334 to 0.158, p = 0.48]. Conclusions Triglyceride-lowering therapies vary greatly across centres. More rapid triglyceride decline was not associated with improving incidence and duration of organ failure.

Abstract Background The triglyceride–glucose (TyG) index has garnered recognition as a surrogate marker for insulin resistance, a pivotal factor in the pathogenesis of various metabolic disorders. Despite its emerging role, the empirical evidence delineating its association with prediabetes mellitus (Pre-DM) remains scant. This research aims to clarify the link between the TyG index and the likelihood of Pre-DM development within a Chinese demographic. Methods This investigation was structured as a retrospective cohort analysis, encompassing a sample of 179,177 Chinese adults. These individuals underwent medical examinations at the Rich Healthcare Group over a period spanning from 2010 to 2016. To ascertain the relationship between the TyG index and the incidence of Pre-DM, this study employed Cox regression analysis complemented by sensitivity and subgroup assessments. Furthermore, Cox proportional hazards regression with cubic spline functions and smooth curve fitting was incorporated to explore the existence of any non-linear connection within this association. Abstract The lipid accumulation product (LAP) is a novel, sex-specific indicator of lipid accumulation. While previous studies have investigated the relationship between LAP and diabetes, they have not specifically addressed potential sex differences in this association. The present study explores the potential sex-specific differences in the relationship between LAP and diabetes mellitus (DM) risk in the Japanese population. From 2004 to 2015, a total of 15,263 Japanese individuals without DM underwent physical assessments at Murakami Memorial Hospital. The association between LAP and incident diabetes was analyzed using Cox proportional hazards regression models, incorporating cubic spline functions and smooth curve fitting to identify potential non-linear relationships. Subgroup and sensitivity analysis assessments were conducted to validate the robustness of our findings. After adjusting for covariates, a positive association between LAP and DM risk was observed in both females (HR: 1.02, 95% CI: 1.00-1.03, P = 0.0138) and males (HR: 1.01, 95% CI: 1.00-1.01, P = 0.0314). A non-linear association between LAP and incident DM was identified for both sexes. The inflection points for LAP were 16.58 for females and 11.11 for males. In females, the HR to the left and right of the inflection point were 1.09 (95% CI: 1.02–1.17) and 1.01 (95% CI: 1.00-1.03), respectively. In males, the HR to the left and right of the inflection point were 0.92 (95% CI: 0.86–0.98) and 1.01 (95% CI: 1.00-1.01), respectively. Sensitivity analysis indicated a stronger association between LAP and DM risk. Elevated baseline LAP levels were associated with an increased risk of incident DM, with the relationship exhibiting non-linear characteristics. These findings suggest that maintaining lower LAP levels may help mitigate the risk of developing diabetes.

Aim: The cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) is a new evaluation indicator for arteriosclerosis. This study investigated the relationship between the CAVI and lipid levels in patients with hypertension in a real clinical environment. Methods: This descriptive study enrolled 2,656 patients (male/female: 1,016/1,640) from the Outpatient Department of Vascular Medicine of Peking University Shougang Hospital and Jinding Street Community Health Service Center. CAVI was measured using a VaseraVS-1000 vascular screening system (Fukuda Denshi, Tokyo, Japan). Results: Age, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, hip circumference, CAVI, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), creatinine, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), uric acid (UA), hypersensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), homocysteine, HbA1c, and triglyceride (TG) were significantly higher in the hypertension group than in the non-hypertension group. The levels of total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were significantly lower in the hypertension group than in the non-hypertension group. The CAVI value was significantly higher in patients with hypertriglyceridemia and normal LDL-C than in those with normal TG and hyper-LDL-C. Age, waist circumference, UA, FPG, HDL-C, hs-CRP, HbA1c, BMI, SBP, and DBP were independently associated with CAVI in all patients. Beta blockers were negatively correlated with CAVI (β = –0.411, P = 0.011). Sex (male) and history of hypertension and diabetes mellitus were positively correlated with CAVI (β = 0.419, P < 0.001; β = 0.247, P = 0.011; β = 0.638, P < 0.001; respectively). Conclusions: The CAVI was significantly higher in patients with hypertension and exhibited differences based on sex. Although we did not find a significant correlation between CAVI and TG, it remains crucial to maintain blood pressure to prevent the development of arteriosclerosis.

Abstract Malnutrition and insulin resistance are linked to complications like delirium, yet their impact on elderly heart failure patients remains underexplored. This study investigates how nutritional status and the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index influence delirium in this population. We conducted a retrospective study involving patients aged 75 and older with decompensated heart failure. Delirium was assessed using the Confusion Assessment Method (CAM), and nutritional status was evaluated with the Mini Nutritional Assessment Scale-Short Form (MNA-SF). The TyG index was calculated as: TyG index = ln [triglycerides (mg/dL) × fasting glucose (mg/dL) / 2]. The study included 412 patients (mean age 84.30 ± 5.16 years; 56.31% male), with 24.03% experiencing delirium during hospitalization. After adjusting for confounders, a higher TyG index was significantly associated with increased delirium risk (OR = 1.549, 95% CI: 1.102–2.178, P = 0.012), while a higher MNA-SF score correlated with reduced risk (OR = 0.793, 95% CI: 0.662–0.949, P = 0.011). Abstract Oxidative stress plays a role in the pathophysiology of metabolic syndrome (MetS), and one of the most important features of polyphenols is their antioxidant properties. However, there is no universal consensus on the effectiveness of polyphenols in treating Mets. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the association between polyphenols and MetS in an Iranian sample. This cross-sectional study was conducted on an adult population sample from Shiraz, in southern Iran. MetS was calculated using the criteria of the Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III), which defines MetS as the presence of three or more of the specified risk factors. A validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was used to measure the participant’s food intake. The association between polyphenol intake and the odds on MetS and its components was assessed using logistic regression. In both univariate and multivariate models, the association between polyphenol intake and the risk of MetS was not significant. However, after adjusting for potential confounders in the multivariate model, each unit change in flavonol, flavanone and isoflavones intake was associated with a lower, higher, and higher odds of MetS, respectively (flavonols: odds ratio (OR) = 0.926, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.891–0.963, P < 0.001—flavanones: OR = 1.007, 95% CI: 1.001–1.014, P = 0.034—isoflavones: OR = 4.920, 95% CI: 1.057–22.894, P = 0.042). Additionally, no significant association was found between polyphenol intake and the risk of MetS components. However, in the multivariate model, after adjusting for potential confounders, a significant association was observed between polyphenol intake and lower odds of high waist circumference (OR = 0.998, 95% CI: 0.996–0.999, P = 0.032). The present study did not reveal a significant association between overall polyphenol intake and the odds of MetS. However, certain subclasses of polyphenols appear to be associated with the likelihood of MetS and its components.

Abstract Background The prognostic significance of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in patients with unstable angina (UA) based on remnant cholesterol (RC) or triglyceride (TG) levels remains unclear. This study aims to evaluate the effects of the interaction between RC, TG, and OSA on cardiovascular outcomes in UA patients. Methods In this prospective cohort study, OSA was diagnosed when apnea-hypopnea index of ≥ 15 events/h. Patients with high RC (HRC, n = 370) or high TG (HTG, n = 362) included RC or TG in the highest tertile, and those in the middle and lowest tertiles were defined as normal RC (NRC, n = 736) or normal TG (NTG, n = 744). The primary endpoint was major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE), including cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, ischemia stroke, ischemia-driven revascularization, or hospitalization for UA. Results A total of 1,106 eligible UA patients were enrolled, among which 560 (50.6%) had OSA. RC and TG levels were increased in OSA patients, but there was no difference in the prevalence of OSA between the NRC and HRC or NTG and HTG groups. During a median follow-up of 1.9 (1.1, 3.0) years, OSA was associated with an increased risk of MACCE occurrence compared to non-OSA in UA patients with HRC (adjusted HR 2.06; 95% CI 1.20–3.51, P = 0.008), but not in those with NRC (adjusted HR 1.21; 95% CI 0.84–1.75, P = 0.297). The incremental risk in HRC was attributable to higher rates of hospitalization for UA and ischemia-driven revascularization. Results for HTG and NTG were similar. Conclusion OSA was associated with a worse prognosis in UA patients with HRC or HTG, emphasizing the necessity of identifying OSA presence in this population. Introduction: Obesity is a prevalent co-morbidity in Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), causing metabolic disturbances that lead to changes in endocrinological homeostasis. Adipokines are proinflammatory molecules secreted by adipose tissues that affect metabolic and endocrinological mechanisms. Excess androgen secretion alters fat distribution and deposition, leading to increased visceral obesity in PCOS, which is a major concern for the development of cardiometabolic events. Aim: To assess the Visceral Adiposity Index (VAI) and levels of different adipokines in non obese and obese PCOS patients, and to establish the relationship between VAI and circulating adipokines in both non obese and obese phenotypes of PCOS patients. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the Mayo Institute of Medical Sciences, Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, India from November 2019 to August 2021. A total of 144 patients diagnosed with PCOS according to the Rotterdam criteria were divided into non obese and obese categories based on Body Mass Index (BMI). VAI was calculated using a sex-specific formula, and serum levels of adiponectin, resistin, and leptin were measured by Enzyme Linked Immuno Sorbent Assay (ELISA). Fasting glucose, insulin, and serum lipid profiles were evaluated. Data were statistically analysed using Student’s t-tests and Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Weighted linear regression was used to detect any relationships between adipokines, obesity indicators, and VAI. Results: A total of 144 female patients with a mean age of 27.47±0.33 years suffering from PCOS were included in this study. VAI was significantly higher (p-value=0.034) in non obese patients than in obese patients. There was a significant correlation between VAI and resistin (r-value=0.302, p-value=0.011) and leptin (r-value=0.308, p-value=0.009) in the non obese PCOS group. Additionally, there was a significant association between obesity indicators {BMI, Body Fat Percentage (BFP), Waist Circumference (WC), and Hip Circumference (HC)} and VAI; this association was absent in the obese subgroup. According to the regression model, leptin was the only statistically relevant predictor for VAI among the studied PCOS patients (t-value=2.278, p-value=0.024). Conclusion: VAI was higher in non obese PCOS patients. An imbalance in adipokines (leptin and resistin) may lead to the accumulation of visceral fat without significantly affecting BMI.

Abstract Introduction Sleep disorders, particularly insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea, are associated with dyslipidemia in the general population. The study’s aim was to explore the association between pathological Cholesterol and Triglyceride levels, and sleep and nighttime behavior disorders (SNBD) in older adults, whether they might predict SNBD onset, and to emphasize the role of body mass index (BMI) in this association. Methods Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) population with complete Cholesterol, Triglyceride, SNBD, and neurocognitive data were included. Logistic regression was performed to study the association between hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and SNBD at baseline and at 12 months. Relevant confounders, particularly BMI, were adjusted for. Results Among the 2,216 included cases, 1,045 (47%) were females, and the median age was 73 years (IQR: 68, 78). At baseline, 357 (16%) had SNBD and 327 (18%) at 12 months; 187 of them were incident cases. There were more cases of baseline SNBD in the hypertriglyceridemia group than in those without (19% vs. 14%, P-value = 0.003). Similarly, more follow-up SNBD cases had hypertriglyceridemia at baseline (21% vs. 16%, P-value = 0.025). Abstract Background The formation of macrosomia is associated with excessive nutrition and/or unable to regulate effectively. This case-control study aims to explore the relationship between macrosomia and glucose, lipids and hormones levels in maternal and cord serum. Methods In the case-control study, 78 pairs of mothers and newborns were recruited who received care at one hospital of Hebei, China between 2016 and 2019. According to the birth weight (BW) of newborns, participants were divided into macrosomia group (BW ≥ 4000 g, n = 39) and control group (BW between 2500 g and 3999 g, n = 39). Maternal vein blood and cord vein blood were collected and assayed. All data were compared between the two groups. Unconditional logistics regression analysis was used to test the relationship between macrosomia and glucose, lipids and hormones in maternal and cord serum. Results In maternal and cord serum, the levels of leptin, leptin/adiponectin ratio (LAR), glucose and triglyceride (TG) in macrosomia group were higher than those in control group, and the levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were lower. The percentage of maternal glucose and lipids transfer to cord blood did not differ between the two groups. High levels of TG in maternal serum were positively correlated with macrosomia, and high levels of LAR, TG and glucose in cord serum were positively correlated with macrosomia. Conclusion In conclusion, the results of the current study, suggest that the nutrients and metabolism-related hormones in maternal and umbilical cord are closely related to macrosomia. During pregnancy, the nutritional status of pregnant women should be paid attention to and to obtain a good birth outcome.

Introduction: Lecithin cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) plays a crucial role in acyl-esterifying cholesterol in plasma, which is essential for reverse cholesterol transport (RCT). Previous studies indicated that its activity on both α and β lipoproteins interpret its effects on lipoproteins for many controversial investigations of atherosclerosis. Objectives: To better understand the relationship between LCAT, diet-induced dyslipidemia and atherosclerosis, we developed a double knockout (LCAT−/−&LDLR−/−, DKO) hamster model to evaluate the specific role of LCAT independent of LDL clearance effects. Methods: Plasma triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), and free cholesterol (FC) levels were measured using biochemical reagent kits. FPLC was performed to analyze the components of lipoproteins. Apolipoprotein content was assessed using western blotting (WB). The hamsters were fed a high cholesterol/high fat diet (HCHFD) to induce atherosclerosis. Oil Red O staining was employed to detect plaque formation. Peritoneal macrophages were studied to investigate the effects of LCAT on cholesterol uptake and efflux. Results: On HCHFD, DKO hamsters exhibited significantly elevated levels of TG and FC, while HDL-C was nearly undetectable without affecting TC levels, as compared to low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR)-deficient (LDLR−/−, LKO) hamsters. Lipoprotein profiling revealed a marked increase in plasma chylomicron/very low-density lipoprotein (CM/VLDL) fractions, along with an unexpected reduction in LDL fraction in DKO hamsters. Furthermore, DKO hamsters displayed aggravated atherosclerotic lesions in the aorta, aortic root, and coronary artery relative to LKO hamsters, attributed to a pro-atherogenic lipoprotein profile and impaired cholesterol efflux in macrophages. Conclusions: Our study demonstrates the beneficial role of LCAT in inhibiting atherosclerotic development and highlights the distinctive lipid metabolism characteristics in hamsters with familial hypercholesterolemia.

Background Residual risk of cardiovascular events and plaque progression remains despite reduction in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Factors contributing to residual risk remain unclear.
