Family routines provide young children with predictable, repeatable, and functional contexts for learning about the world. Participating in family routines is a critical pathway by which all children learn. While the use of family routines in caregiver-implemented interventions (CIIs) is supported by theories, research, and recommended practices, few investigations examine the degree to which interventions take place within routines across developmental domains in early childhood intervention research. We conducted a scoping review using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews checklist to examine an interdisciplinary body of CIIs. We coded 42 articles for the presence and types of routines, child and family demographics, developmental targets, and how routines were identified within CIIs. Autism spectrum disorder was the highest represented disability; many studies included play routines or a combination of play with another routine. In this article, we discuss the importance of family routines in CIIs, how to jointly identify a range of routines with caregivers, and we describe the need for research on family routines in CIIs across disabilities and diverse family backgrounds.

Abnormalities of mineral metabolism are associated with increased mortality in patients with ESRD, but their effects in predialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD) are less well characterized. In this study, the associations between levels of serum phosphorus, calcium, and calcium-phosphorus product and progression of CKD were examined. Historical data were collected on 985 male US veterans (age 67.4 +/- 10.9; 23.9% black) with CKD stages 1 through 5. Unadjusted and multivariable-adjusted relative risks for progressive CKD (defined as the composite of ESRD or doubling of serum creatinine) were calculated for categories of serum phosphorus, calcium, and calcium-phosphorus product using Cox proportional hazards models. BackgroundBlood pressure shows an inverse association with mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on dialysis. It is unclear if the same phenomenon exists in patients with CKD not yet on dialysis.MethodsWe examined the association of systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure with all-cause mortality in a historical prospective cohort of 860 patients (age 68.1+/-10.1 years, 99.1% male, 24.4% black) with estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR) < 60 ml/min/1.73 m2. We used Cox models to adjust for the effects of age, race, diabetes mellitus, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), congestive heart failure, smoking, antihypertensive medications, body mass index, GFR, albumin, cholesterol, haemoglobin and proteinuria. To examine the role of comorbidities, we performed subgroup analyses based on prevalent ASCVD status and level of estimated GFR.ResultsHigher SBP and higher DBP were both associated with lower mortality [adjusted hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) for SBP 133-154, 155-170 and > 170 mmHg, compared with < 133 mmHg, respectively: 0.61 (0.44-0.85), 0.62 (0.45-0.87) and 0.68 (0.49-0.96); and for DBP 65-75, 76-86 and > 86 mmHg, compared with < 65 mmHg: 0.85 (0.62-1.18), 0.72 (0.52-1.00) and 0.60 (0.41-0.86)]. The same association was present for both SBP and DBP only in subgroups with GFR < or = 30 ml/min/1.73 m2 and for DBP only in the subgroup with ASCVD.ConclusionsLower blood pressure is associated with higher mortality in patients with moderate to severe CKD, but interactions with kidney function and with ASCVD suggest that blood pressure may play a surrogate rather than a causative role in this association.

Sentence generation involves selecting the right words out of multiple co-activated representations for the right utterance positions. This selection process is hypothesized to involve cognitive control. Previous research has linked cognitive control during language processing to regions within the frontal lobe, including the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and left ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC). We examined the neural correlates of word and sentence generation to determine whether these cognitive control regions were activated more for sentences than words. We also manipulated the phonological overlap between nouns in the sentence to determine whether cognitive control recruitment increased under phonological competition. Whole-brain analysis revealed increased activation in the ACC and bilateral frontal cortex for sentences over words. Region of interest analysis revealed an effect of phonological competition within the ACC. Psychophysiological interaction (PPI) analysis further showed that functional connectivity within a task-maintenance network increased under phonological competition. These results suggest a role for conflict detection and monitoring during sentence generation, which is consistent with a theoretical framework incorporating domain-general cognitive control processes into language processing.
