The One-hundred-deg$^2$ DECam Imaging in Narrowbands (ODIN) survey is carrying out a systematic search for protoclusters during Cosmic Noon, using Ly$\alpha$-emitting galaxies (LAEs) as tracers. Once completed, ODIN aims to identify hundreds of protoclusters at redshifts of 2.4, 3.1, and 4.5 across seven extragalactic fields, covering a total area of up to 91~deg$^2$. In this work, we report strong clustering of high-redshift protoclusters through the protocluster-LAE cross-correlation function measurements of 150 protocluster candidates at $z~=~2.4$ and 3.1, identified in two ODIN fields with a total area of 13.9 deg$^2$. At $z~=~2.4$ and 3.1, respectively, the inferred protocluster biases are $6.6^{+1.3}_{-1.1}$ and $6.1^{+1.3}_{-1.1}$, corresponding to mean halo masses of $\log \langle M /M_\odot\rangle = 13.53^{+0.21}_{-0.24}$ and $12.96^{+0.28}_{-0.33}$. By the present day, these protoclusters are expected to evolve into virialized galaxy clusters with a mean mass of $\sim$ $10^{14.5}~M_\odot$. By comparing the observed number density of protoclusters to that of halos with the measured clustering strength, we find that our sample is highly complete. Finally, the similar descendant masses derived for our samples at $z=2.4$ and 3.1 assuming that the halo number density remains constant suggest that they represent similar structures observed at different cosmic epochs. As a consequence, any observed differences between the two samples can be understood as redshift evolution. We test whether Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) and Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) can be good tracers of high-z large-scale structures, using the Horizon Run 5 cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. We identify LAEs using the Ly{\alpha} emission line luminosity and its equivalent width, and LBGs using the broad-band magnitudes at z~2.4, 3.1, and 4.5. We first compare the spatial distributions of LAEs, LBGs, all galaxies, and dark matter around the filamentary structures defined by dark matter. The comparison shows that both LAEs and LBGs are more concentrated toward the dark matter filaments than dark matter. We also find an empirical fitting formula for the vertical density profile of filaments as a binomial power-law relation of the distance to the filaments. We then compare the spatial distributions of the samples around the filaments defined by themselves. LAEs and LBGs are again more concentrated toward their filaments than dark matter. We also find the overall consistency between filamentary structures defined by LAEs, LBGs, and dark matter, with the median spatial offsets that are smaller than the mean separation of the sample. To understand the formation and evolution of massive cosmic structures, studying them at high redshift, in the epoch when they formed the majority of their mass is essential. The One-hundred-deg$^2$ DECam Imaging in Narrowbands (ODIN) survey is undertaking the widest-area narrowband program to date, to use Ly$\alpha$-emitting galaxies (LAEs) to trace the large-scale structure (LSS) of the Universe on the scale of 10 - 100 cMpc at three cosmic epochs. In this work, we present results at $z$ = 3.1 based on early ODIN data in the COSMOS field. We identify and characterize protoclusters and cosmic filaments using multiple methods and discuss their strengths and weaknesses. We then compare our observations against the IllustrisTNG suite of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. The two are in excellent agreement, with a similar number and angular size of structures identified above a specified density threshold. We are able to recover the simulated protoclusters with $\log$(M$_{z=0}$/$M_\odot$) $\gtrsim$ 14.4 in $\sim$ 60% of the cases. With these objects we show that the descendant masses of the protoclusters in our sample can be estimated purely based on our 2D measurements, finding a median $z$ = 0 mass of $\sim10^{14.5}$M$_\odot$. The lack of information on the radial extent of each protocluster introduces a $\sim$0.4 dex uncertainty in its descendant mass. Finally, we show that the recovery of the cosmic web in the vicinity of protoclusters is both efficient and accurate. The similarity of our observations and the simulations imply that our structure selection is likewise robust and efficient, demonstrating that LAEs are reliable tracers of the LSS., Comment: 29 pages, 20 figures; Accepted for publication in ApJ

We describe the survey design and science goals for ODIN (One-hundred-deg^2 DECam Imaging in Narrowbands), a NOIRLab survey using the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) to obtain deep (AB~25.7) narrow-band images over an unprecedented area of sky. The three custom-built narrow-band filters, N419, N501, and N673, have central wavelengths of 419, 501, and 673 nm and respective full-widthat-half-maxima of 7.2, 7.4, and 9.8 nm, corresponding to Lya at z=2.4, 3.1, and 4.5 and cosmic times of 2.8, 2.1, and 1.4 Gyr, respectively. When combined with even deeper, public broad-band data from Hyper Suprime-Cam, DECam, and in the future, LSST, the ODIN narrow-band images will enable the selection of over 100,000 Lya-emitting (LAE) galaxies at these epochs. ODIN-selected LAEs will identify protoclusters as galaxy overdensities, and the deep narrow-band images enable detection of highly extended Lya blobs (LABs). Primary science goals include measuring the clustering strength and dark matter halo connection of LAEs, LABs, and protoclusters, and their respective relationship to filaments in the cosmic web. The three epochs allow the redshift evolution of these properties to be determined during the period known as Cosmic Noon, where star formation was at its peak. The two narrow-band filter wavelengths are designed to enable interloper rejection and further scientific studies by revealing [O II] and [O III] at z=0.34, Lya and He II 1640 at z=3.1, and Lyman continuum plus Lya at z=4.5. We investigate the presence of ionised gas outflows in a sample of 141 main-sequence star-forming galaxies at $1.2 10.8$, AGN-dominated galaxies, suggesting that AGNs may be the primary drivers of these gas flows. Surprisingly, at $\log(M_\star/M_{\odot})\leq 9.6$, the observed line profiles are fully consistent with a rotating disc model, indicating that ionised gas outflows in dwarf galaxies might play a negligible role even during the peak of cosmic star-formation activity. Finally, we find that the observed mass loading factor scales with stellar mass as expected from the TNG50 cosmological simulation, but the ionised gas mass accounts for only 2$\%$ of the predicted value. This suggests that either the bulk of the outflowing mass is in other gaseous phases or the current feedback models implemented in cosmological simulations need to be revised., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 28 pages, 20 figures

We report the detection of [O I]145.5um in the BR 1202-0725 system, a compact group at z=4.7 consisting of a quasar (QSO), a submillimeter-bright galaxy (SMG), and three faint Lya emitters. By taking into account the previous detections and upper limits, the [O I]/[C II] line ratios of the now five known high-z galaxies are higher than or on the high-end of the observed values in local galaxies ([O I]/[C II]$\gtrsim$0.13). The high [O I]/[C II] ratios and the joint analysis with the previous detection of [N II] lines for both the QSO and the SMG suggest the presence of warm and dense neutral gas in these highly star-forming galaxies. This is further supported by new CO (12-11) line detections and a comparison with cosmological simulations. There is a possible positive correlation between the [NII]122/205 line ratio and the [O I]/[C II] ratio when all local and high-z sources are taken into account, indicating that the denser the ionized gas, the denser and warmer the neutral gas (or vice versa). The detection of the [O I] line in the BR1202-0725 system with a relatively short amount of integration with ALMA demonstrates the great potential of this line as a dense gas tracer for high-z galaxies., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 1 table, Accepted for publication in ApJ, figures 2 and 4 show the main results

We present near-infrared observations of 42 gravitationally lensed galaxies obtained in the framework of the KMOS Lensed Emission Lines and VElocity Review (KLEVER) Survey, a program aimed at investigating the spatially resolved properties of the ionised gas in 1.2 3$\sigma$) "inverted" gradients are also found, showing an anti-correlation between metallicity and star formation rate density on local scales, possibly suggesting recent episodes of pristine gas accretion or strong radial flows in place. Nevertheless, the individual metallicity maps are characterised by a variety of different morphologies, with flat radial gradients sometimes hiding non-axisymmetric variations on kpc scales which are washed out by azimuthal averages, especially in interacting systems or in those undergoing local episodes of recent star formation., Comment: Main text: 23 pages, 11 figures. We report the first detection obtained with ALMA of the [N II] 122$\mu$m line emission from a galaxy group BRI 1202-0725 at $z=4.69$ consisting of a QSO and a submilimeter-bright galaxy (SMG). Combining with a detection of [N II] 205$\mu$m line in both galaxies, we constrain the electron densities of the ionized gas based on the line ratio of [NII]122/205. The derived electron densities are $26^{+12}_{-11}$ and $134^{+50}_{-39}$ cm$^{-3}$ for the SMG and the QSO, respectively. The electron density of the SMG is similar to that of the Galactic Plane and to the average of the local spirals. Higher electron densities by up to a factor of three could, however, be possible for systematic uncertainties of the line flux estimates. The electron density of the QSO is comparable to high-$z$ star-forming galaxies at $z=1.5-2.3$, obtained using rest-frame optical lines and with the lower limits suggested from stacking analysis on lensed starbursts at $z=1-3.6$ using the same tracer of [NII]. Our results suggest a large scatter of electron densities in global scale at fixed star formation rates for extreme starbursts. The success of the [N II] 122$\mu$m and 205$\mu$m detections at $z=4.69$ demonstrates the power of future systematic surveys of extreme starbursts at $z>4$ for probing the ISM conditions and the effects on surrounding environments., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in the ApJL

We searched for z > 7 Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) in the optical-to-mid-infrared Hubble Frontier Field and associated parallel field observations of the strong-lensing cluster MACS J0416-2403. We discovered 22 candidates, of which six lie at z > 9 and one lies at z > 10. Based on the Hubble and Spitzer photometry, all have secure photometric redshifts and a negligible probability of being at lower redshifts, according to their peak probability ratios, R. This substantial increase in the number of known high-redshift galaxies allows a solid determination of the luminosity function at z > 8. The number of high-z candidates in the parallel field is considerably higher than that in the Abell 2744 parallel field. Our candidates have median stellar masses of log(M_*) ~ 8.40^{+0.55}_{-0.31}~Msun, SFRs of ~ 1.6^{+0.5}_{-0.4} Msun yr^-1, and SFR-weighted ages of < 310^{+70}_{-140} Myr. Finally, we are able to put strong constraints on the z = 7,8,9 and 10 luminosity functions. One of the objects in the cluster field is a z ~ 10 candidate, with a magnification of mu ~ 20 +- 13. This object is likely the faintest z ~ 10 object known to date, allowing a first look into the extreme faint-end (L ~ 0.04L*) of the z ~ 10 luminosity function., Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJ

In the present work, we study the classical behavior of an electric dipole in presence of an external uniform magnetic field. We derive equations and constants of motion from the Lagrangian formulation. We obtain an infinitely periodic effective potential that describes a rotational motion. The problem is not directly separable in relative and center of mass variables; even though, we are able to write the energy of the system as a function of an only term, the relative variable. We define another constant of motion, which couples the relative with the center of mass variables. We describe conditions for bound states of the dipole. In addition, we discuss the problem in the approximation of small oscillations. Finally, we explore the existence of a possible family of trapped states in a region of the space where there are no classical turning points., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures
